Aisa Qandisa [Moroccan folktales]
In northern Morocco and western Algeria, there are tales of a mysterious woman named Aisa Qandisa who sometimes appears at night to seduce men. Her name tends to vary a lot between regions and authors: sometimes she is called Aïcha Kandisha, Aïcha Soudaniyya or similar names. She is a Jenniya, which is a relatively obscure term for a kind of female Jinni spirit.
As she is a seductress, Aisa Qandisa appears as an incredibly attractive woman, but sometimes with the hind legs of a goat. In other, rarer versions, she is a strange monster with human legs and the body of a goat, but with breasts. Still other stories describe her as a very old, ugly crone. Usually she appears as an attractive woman though, and when she does she often wears expensive, exotic clothing.
Qandisa is usually encountered on roads at night, where she appears before handsome young men. You should never come with her, because those who have been taken by the spirit will lose their sanity. You can defend yourself against this creature if you have a steel object on your person, as she is deathly afraid of steel. Even a steel needle is enough to scare her away.
In one story, the spirit is encountered by a man in Tangier and proceeded to call out to her, trying to persuade him into approaching her. Though he did not realize she was a supernatural creature, he was not interested and went home. As it was late, the man turned off the lights and went to bed, but felt a human breast where his pillow should be. Realizing that the woman he met that night must have been a Jenniya, he panicked and fled his house. With nowhere else to go, the man knocked on the door of his parents’ house. After listening to his story, his brother and mother agreed to come with him and they entered the bedroom together, but the room was empty and the spirit was nowhere to be found.
Not certain what to do now, the man talked to others about his supernatural experience and eventually met an old man who told him that the mysterious woman must have been Aisa Qandisa, who is known to appear in that spot at night.
The details differ between stories, but most tales agree that Aisa Qandisa is connected to water in one way or another. Sometimes her home is in the depths of the ocean and sometimes she lives in springs or rivers. The city of Tetuan has a local story about her where the spirit lives underneath a ruined bridge over a nearby river. Men often go missing near that location, and these disappearances are attributed to Aisa, who is said to grab bathing men and pull them to the river depths. At summer times, she can sometimes be seen on the riverbank.
In addition, she is known to be a shapeshifter and enjoys copying the appearance of married woman, so she can approach their husbands and kill them.
She isn’t always a vicious murderer, though. In one, more humorous folktale, the spirit saw a man bathing in her river. She decided to prank him by jumping on his back and demanding to be carried. But he cried out to the confused onlookers and asked if someone could give him a dagger to defend himself with, and then the spirit suddenly disappeared.
Despite being a seductress spirit, Aisa Qandisa is sometimes said to be married. Her husband is an enigmatic man named Hammu Qaiyu. He is a very tall man and he also lives in Aisa’s river, but not much appears to be known about this spirit.
Stories don’t agree about her origin. There is one claim that she was a human woman who would seduce Portuguese soldiers in the 16th century to gain their trust. When the soldiers followed her to a secluded location, she would kill them. According to the tale, she was captured by the Portuguese, who punished her by slaughtering her entire family and her lover but left her alive. The young woman lost her mind and disappeared in a deep forest, occasionally attacking and eating travellers. This is just a story however, and I don’t know whether it’s based on a real person.

If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?
As adorable as A'idan is, he's too talkative and energetic for me. We'd probably get along but he'd exhaust me so quickly that I would keep him at a distance most time than not.
Inge's pretty closed off even though she doesn't give that impression. I do believe we'd become friends given time, but it'd be a matter of many years. There's no real fast friendship with her anymore.
Aïcha is the typical extrovert who will adopt any introvert people she thinks she can vibe with. She also reminds me of an ex-coworker of mine I've lost contact with during Covid, so yeah, fast friend with her.
I find Skaar pretty cool as a character but we don't have anything in common so I'd say we'd get along well in the same way you might get along with a coworker that you don't necessarily want to see outside of work.
Wolfe and I would get along... weirdly. Probably a lot of heated discussions and debates, whether we disagree or not :'D But I think he'd be the one I'd have the easiest time communicating with, even though it might not look like that. Most likely end up being actual friends at some point.
Kazan, it's difficult to say. But he's calm, mostly silent, usually reasonable, so I think we'd get along just fine. Probably would sort of adopt him as a little brother, much to his annoyance.
Astrid's too shy and doesn't speak her mind enough for my taste. I don't think she'd find me tactful enough.
Alakja is a silly grandpa who's spent most of his life alone in the forest, save for tribal festivities and sex. He's nice and pretty and stupid. I don't know. I suppose we'd get along? I don't think I'd know what to do with him :'D
The Advocate would give me the creeps because that's what he does to everybody. If I manage to get past that, we'd become friends I think. At the very least, we'd get along just fine. He's nice and chill and loves art and deep conversations and cats, so really...
Hanae would give me the creeps and I would stay the hell away from her, as you should. She can be trusted only as far as you're useful to her, and I've met too many people like her to even entertain the idea of giving her a chance.
Griveroix... Not that any follower really knows who's that guy but I don't think I'd like him very much even if you don't know who I'm talking about XD He's not a very likeable guy overall anyway. Doesn't even try.
Aku is another important NPC, and we'd get along just fine. He's a cool guy, if a bit misguided at times.
I have too many characters but I don't think I've forgotten anyone? Anyway, thanks for the ask, @irisopranta!

SKU Directory
Hello there! If you've been following @sonderthroughthestreets, @alexdrijzermans, or my Tumblr the last couple days, you may have noticed us talking about this AU that the three of us created that originally sprang from this post Dani made back in July, which was then followed by a bunch of headcanons and a short fic that Tasfia made.
Within the last couple days, the posts have resurged and we have come up with an entire universe around this idea, which we've affectionately nicknamed the SKU - Sobbe's Kids Universe. And so we figured it might be a good idea to make a place to keep track of all of these new characters, hence what this post is for. So, without further ado, I introduce to you the wtFOCK next gen created by myself, Dani, and Tasfia.
Sobbe's Kids
Alright, so first up we obviously have the two kids that brought this whole universe to life in the first place. At some point in the future, Robbe and Sander decide to adopt two wonderful children, two years apart in age. The two siblings love each other a great deal and though neither will admit it, they are each other's best friends at heart.
Alexander Driesen-IJzermans (or Drijzermans) - Born July 30th, 2032. The oldest. Adopted as a baby. Originally born Alexandra. Prefers to go by Alex. Came out as trans at the age of 13. Pansexual. White. Dark brown hair (similar to Robbe's). Grey-green eyes. Unfortunately has never liked David Bowie, much to Sander's disappointment, and he is VERY dramatic about it. Quiet and not very outgoing. Tends to prefer to keep to himself. Patient. Swears like sailor when angered. Skateboarder, loves rap music. A lot like Robbe.
Mia Driesen-IJzermans (or Drijzermans) - Born April 19th, 2034. The youngest. Adopted at two years old. Lesbian. White. Blonde curly hair (though she occasionally dyes it). Brown eyes. Very much the opposite of her brother, extremely outgoing and talkative. Inherited Sander's love of mischief and his charm, but also Robbe's doe eyes that give her the perfect innocent look. Constantly getting into trouble and charming her way out of it. Bowie-lover to the max. Major romantic. Has depression. Very artsy, specifically an affinity for music, guitar and piano are her main instruments. A lot like Sander.
Youmina's Kids
Robbe and Sander stay very close to Yasmina and Younes as they get older, so close in fact that their kids think of them as their aunt and uncle and Yasmina and Younes's kids as their cousins. While Younes wanted six kids, he compromises with Yasmina and they end up having four, one in Alex's grade, one in Mia's, and two that are a bit younger.
Léon El Amrani - Born September 5th, 2032. The oldest. Gay. Dark, extremely curly hair. Dark brown eyes. Quiet and reserved, but very easy-going. Kind and observant. Loves to read and write. Majors in journalism. He and Alex are close growing up, share a lot of classes. Study together a lot. A lot like Younes.
Aisha El Amrani - Born February 28th, 2034. Second oldest. Bisexual. Often wears colorful hijabs. Light brown eyes. Named in honor of Aïcha, who remained close to her parents. Sarcastic and a realist. Extremely loyal and a big softie despite coming off a little intimidating. Wants to be a lawyer. Close friends with Mia and apart of her friend group. A lot like Yasmina.
Nadia El Amrani - Born August 1st, 2037. Second youngest. Tends to prefer neutral-colored hijabs. Medium brown eyes. Optimistic and cheerful. Always looking out for others. Has never met a stranger. Incredibly intelligent, has an affinity for science.
Ilyas El Amrani - Born January 7th, 2039. The youngest. Dark, curly hair. Dark brown eyes. Named in honor of his Uncle Elias. Tends to be standoffish, doesn't like meeting new people. Not the best at talking, would prefer to sit in silence with the people he loves. Loves learning, especially about history.
Alex's Gang
Though Alex is not very big on making friends himself, he tends to have them made for him, whether it be someone picking him out in a crowd and deciding he's theirs or because Mia introduces him to them. The group goes through a range of names, Double A when it's just Austin and Alex, ACA when Camille joins them, and a range of others after she leaves and Jamie joins, though "Gender Destroyers" is one they all unironically love.
Austin Danes - Born February 11th, 2032. AMAB non-binary. Uses all pronouns. White. Constantly dyes their hair, but it's naturally brown. Green eyes. Youngest of five, three older sisters and one older brother with brother being the middle child. Pretty self-sufficient and the one her parents have to worry about the least, so he doesn't get a lot of attention at home. Energetic and outgoing, constantly bouncing off the walls. Met Alex in primary school through Mia and became fast friends, the two have been inseparable ever since. Alex calms Austin down and Austin brings Alex out of his shell.
Camille Mertens - Born December 1st, 2032. Dark-skinned. Red hair. Hazel eyes. Independent and outgoing. Raised by her grandmother because her mother died young and her father was never in the picture. Introduced to Austin and Alex through Mia late into high school, and while her and Alex start as friends, they start dating a few weeks into their friendship. Unfortunately doesn't last because Camille ends up going to college in America, her and Alex lose touch. Double majors in psychology and creative writing. Moves back home because her grandmother falls ill and dies. Her and Alex eventually run into each other and spend two years as "just friends" before eventually getting back together.
Jamie Lecomte-Etienne - Born March 30th, 2032. Bisexual. Cis, but gender non-conforming. Japanese and white. Black hair. Dark brown eyes. Loud and talkative. Super bubbly and kind to everyone she meets. Unfortunately a business major ("it's your only flaw" as Austin says). Originally born and grew up in France, went to Belgium for college. Met Austin and Alex in university. Hits it off right away. Eventually finds out that one of her moms and one of Alex's dads were friends once upon a time and helps them get back in touch. Her and Austin end up together.
Mia's Gang
Affectionately coined "de Familie," Mia has a close-knit group of friends that are like a second family to her. Queer kids with mostly shitty home lives, the group instead finds a home in each other. Sander and Robbe's house is seen as a safe place for them to hang out and they take great pride in this.
Jia Shen - Born May 8th, 2034. Lesbian. Chinese and Muslim. Middle child, has an older sister and a younger brother. Always wearing colorful hijabs. Light brown eyes. Ironically goes to the same mosque as Yasmina, Younes, and their kids and that's how her and Mia met. Jia tagged along one time with the El Amranis to the Driesen-IJzermans and her and Mia hit it off immediately. Her parents are very loving and accepting. Her and Mia have very similar personalities, and that combined with their names being so similar means they are often teased for it. "Same person, different font" is often tossed around.
Raya Raza - Born December 12th, 2034. Trans girl. Bisexual. Pakistani. Long, dark hair. Dark brown eyes. Prefers to go by Ray. Oldest of two, has a younger sister. Quiet, bookish. Aims to be a doctor (50% because her parents want her to be one, 50% because she wants to be one). Her parents are very strict and have high expectations, they are the reason she chooses not to come out until college. They do end up doing their best to accept her, though they take a long time to use her correct name and pronouns. She meets Mia midway through high school. Only her friends know her identity until she comes out in college and starts transitioning.
Kaden Bakker - Born October 13th, 2034. Token straight, but ace. White. Light brown hair. Blue eyes. Extremely sweet and down to Earth. Tall and wide, making him look way more intimidating than he is. Parents put a lot of pressure on him and don't approve of his friends, but he views them as his family. Meets Mia, Aisha, Jia, and Ray not long after Ray joins the group and hits it off with all of them almost instantly.
Max Visser - Born August 27th, 2034. AMAB non-binary. Uses they/he pronouns. Identifies as gay. Black, dark-skinned. Dark brown hair. Brown eyes. Guarded and constantly on alert. Grew up jumping around foster homes before landing in the one that placed him at the others's school their senior year. Took a long time to open up to them. Ray and them become close and she is actually the one that gets them to open up more and eventually he opens up to the rest of the group as well. Unfortunately they end up aging out of the system, but they have a family in the friend group anyway, so they don't mind.
Angelica Nang - Born June 4th, 2034. Pansexual. Korean. Brown hair with some natural red, typically worn in long braids down her back. Brown eyes. Perfectionist and soft-spoken. Classic pianist. Youngest of two, has an older brother. A lot of pressure put on her because her brother did not meet their expectations, they wanted him to be an architect, but he moved to Australia and joined a rock band. Her parents also want her to be a lawyer, but she pursues music instead and she has to be perfect at it, to the point she starts to forget why she pursued it in the first place. Meets Mia in college and they hit it off right away and start dating. Mia writes her song after song and eventually helps her to realize why she started playing in the first place.

hello pals! last night @cayzaka, posted a very cute yasmina x younes prompt in the tag (x) and it gave me some inspo. so i decided to write a short fanfic (?) with the prompt in mind. i’ve not written properly in AGES, but inspiration struck me and i wanted to get something down. please bare in mind, i’ve never written fanfic kinda stuff before, it’s also a bit messy / choppy and i kinda like that, plus if i have got anything wrong, feel free to let me know. i’m here to learn tbh. anyways! it’s undercut if you wanna have a read. cheers!
yasmina x younes: the morning after
yasmina rolled over, her eyes opening slowly, for a moment she doesn’t know where she is, she can’t remember, this isn’t her own bed. she sits up and then everything comes flooding back to her, the drama, the argument, the slap, the fact that she’d ended up at younes’ place, she feels strangely calm about it all though, it was almost as if last night was a dream. she climbed out of younes’ bed,  picking up a hoodie and throwing it on, then picking up her hijab, she causally wraps up her hair, then she heads downstairs.
yasmina got downstairs and she found younes’ on the sofa, asleep, she couldn’t help but smile softly at the sight. she makes her way into his kitchen and she was about to open his fridge door, to see what he had in, when she noticed the time on the clock above his fridge, she was late for school, “shit” she mutters under her breath. yasmina turns on her heels, she needs to get going, as she turns, someone appears, it’s younes.
“you’re not that quiet you know” he says, yasmina laughs awkwardly, her cheeks flushing pink, she’s embarrassed. “how are you feeling?” younes carries on, “better” she replies, with a nod of her head, he smiles at her, “good”. he runs a hand through his dark hair, “so breakfast?” yasmina tugs at her bottom lip, she wanted to stay, she did, but she also didn’t want to get in trouble, “i can’t, school remember?” younes shakes his head, “c’mon you can stay for breakfast at least” yasmina sighs, her eyes quickly scanning back to the clock, it was already 10:00, it wasn’t like anyone was going to miss her at school. “alright, breakfast, that’s it” the smile on younes’ face only grows bigger.
the pair sit at younes’ dining table, with breakfast in front of them, pancakes and coffee. “these pancakes are actually pretty good” yasmina says, as she pours herself some more coffee, “hey! are you doubting my cooking skills?” yasmina gives him a gentle shove with her foot under the table, younes laughs, “thanks”. it was quiet for a moment, yasmina liked that, she needed moments like this one, she didn’t need to try with younes, she could just be herself, there was no stress, no pressure to fit in, it felt good. “i like that hoodie too, it suits you” he says, yasmina looks down, then it hits her, it's his hoodie, “you can have it back --- if you want” she looks over at him, shy all of a sudden, “no, no, you keep it. it's yours, consider it a present from me” he chuckles a little, leaning back on his chair.
breakfast eventually became brunch, the pair just talked about everything and anything, ignoring the drama, she didn’t even get a chance to check her phone. once they’d done with breakfast she went to his bathroom to freshen up, wiping away the make-up from last night, it didn’t take her long to do. she stood in front of his sink, looking at herself in the mirror, it felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, she’d spoken to someone at last, she’d needed this. she gripped onto the sink, taking a deep breath in, she was going to be okay, knowing that she had younes on her side.
she headed back into the living room, to find younes’ pacing up and down on his phone, “yeah, yeah dude i’ve got her. she’s fine” he pauses, looking at yasmina, “she couldn’t sleep, so she walked over to mine, like i said, she’s okay, i promise” yasmina watches him, she didn’t want to talk to her brother, not yet, she wasn’t ready. “you can speak to her if you want?” he holds out the phone towards her, yasmina shakes her head, he quickly puts the phone to his ear, “actually she’s just gone to the bathroom, but she’s alright, you’re good at lying aren’t you? just tell your parents she’s at aïcha’s or something, she’ll be back later” yasmina can’t help but smile.
the pair spent the rest of the day hanging out, watching tv shows, shooting the shit and not doing much, it was great, a break was just what she needed, she didn’t even look at her phone once. it was starting to get late though, she needed to go back home, the two stood on his door-step, “let me walk you back” younes says, but yasmina shakes her head, “i’m fine, don’t worry”. she’s about to leave but then she remembers his hoodie, “are you sure you don’t want this back?” she gestures to his hoodie, “it’s a present, remember?” the pair share a smile, “text me when you’re home then” he tells her, the pair share a hug for a moment, really, deep down, she didn’t want to leave, she wanted to stay here forever, this small flat had become her safe haven, but she had to get back to reality at some point.

Directorial nuggets
Woensdag 18:23 part 1
Long clips with Yasmina talking with people she loves are my favourite this season. So here we have another one of those.
Our baby girl is so absorbed by her thoughts. You can really see throughout this week how each clip feels heavier as she is drowning further in her thoughts. Elias by her side asking her in his own annoying but loving big brother style if she is ok. I love that so so much. This is the second person from her family to do that today. The difference between the way she reacts to those two people is striking but also the difference from the first time Elias asked her if she is ok after she prompted him to. She wants to talk you can see it in her body language but she immediately assumes that no one will understand her and that is where the problem lies with Yasmina. I adore how Elias doesn’t give up and he says “Try me”.
Yasmina’s frustration is obvious again through her words. “Do you ever wonder what you are even doing?”, “Just our rules what we are and we are not allowed to do?” She starts saying that he has more liberties than her and she has to ask permission all the time or she is told no. This conversation is about family rules more than anything else. Again I don’t know if what Yasmina says here is actually how things work in her family or everything is amplified in her mind because of her ongoing conflict. The reason I believe that what Yasmina says here is actually exaggerated in her mind is because of Elias’ confused look while she talks and the fact that he picks up that something else is behind that massive frustration. Because if her parents where really that different in their treatment towards Yasmina all those years I bet Elias wouldn’t have been so surprised to see her frustrated. She would have shown her frustration at some point before.
“But don’t you have that, that you feel as an alien who constantly has to fit in somewhere even though you know it won’t work?” And that is what it all comes down to right now. Yasmina is at that point of her life where she questions everything, her parents, her friends, her brother, what she believes in, what she feels, her faith and most importantly her self. She is now at the level where everything and everyone seem to be against her in her mind exactly because she has shaken the ground under her feet and she is floating in the labyrinth of her thoughts. She literally is going through an existential crisis. She is lost.
Interesting how Elias thinks that the reason this is all happening is because of Yasmina having non Muslim friends when we know that the issue is much deeper and it actually lies on the fight between her mind and her heart.
Second person who is close to Younes that doesn’t believe that Younes is not Muslim. We had the same with Aïcha. That is there to showcase how true to Islam values Younes lives his life. One thing I have a question on though. At some point Elias says that Younes is fasting when we have seen him clearly state the opposite. So is that Elias’ own assumption because of how good of a person Younes is?
I love how Elias compares Younes to himself. He says look at me I am Muslim but I still do stupid things. What is more valid living according to the values of Islam or identifying as Muslim and living your life not as close to those values. I love that in a way he reads himself but he also brings his argument closer to home for Yasmina with that comparison. He says Younes is “Imam, head to toe. Like you.” Elias knows, Elias ships it. We have a very interesting conversation about what makes a good Muslim and we see Elias’ views on the matter. I adore how lighthearted Elias made that conversation for Yasmina. He saw that she needed it and he made her smile while giving her a beautiful advise without ever stopping being the annoying extremely loving brother that he is.

some thoughts about Zaterdag 14:13 (ep. 2, clip 1):
yasmina coming to watch the boys (and younes!) play basketball. first, can i just say that exercising/playing sports when you are fasting is tough! especially because you are not allowed to drink any fluids during your fasting hours - i always admire athletes who are able to balance religion with their training/practicing.
i appreciate the visuals throughout the season with yasmina and various pieces of literature. here, she has one of moroccan-born, belgian female writer's (rachida lamrabet) work. perhaps a writer with whom yasmina can relate? it's a story with roots in colonialism, and while belgium did not colonize morocco*, it certainly has had a brutal colonialist past.
so aïcha stops by the basketball court and sidles up to yasmina looking sheepish and it's clear that yasmina is pissed. but it's not because aïcha took off her hijab or that aïcha parties. yasmina recognizes that there are all types of muslims out there with all levels of practice - i mean, look at her brother, elias, who may occasionally smoke weed during ramadan. rather, it's about the position that aïcha left yasmina in. that yasmina was stuck waiting in the cold by herself instead of immediately going home and spilling aïcha's "secret," and it's like a form of lying (during ramadan!)
i feel like in certain ways yasmina is such a good communicator and doesn't beat around the bush (e.g., she immediately approached elias and aaron about the fight). here, she could have brushed the situation off but instead she let aïcha know how upset she felt. and aïcha for her part did apologize. i've noticed that once yasmina gets her thoughts off her chest, she's also quick to forgive. (hey, always good to let go of grudges during ramadan!)
now i do think wtfock is definitely setting up aïcha to take on the noora role with respect to a potential "triangle" with younes. and i bet there will be a giant miscommunication situation/yasmina interpreting something that may not be there, but here is the one area where yasmina's "communication" will be tested.
*Google says Belgium did serve as co-administrator of the Tangier International Zone in Morocco though.

Aïcha is playing Nora role and she has a brother in Uni you think that brother is relevant as In that could be Bel! Mikael ?
I feel like it could be connected 🧐
I mean, Antwerp isn't thát big and universities / uni colleges often party together or do stuff together. It wouldn't surprise me if they all knew each other in some way.
Remember Sander texting Robbe about a certain Adi helping him? Isn't Adi a name that sounds somewhat of North-African origin? Just like Younes or Elias? 👀

PART 1: Hey! First of all I really like your blog. I think there is some confusion about the roommate thing here on tumblr, which I find a bit strange because I didn't notice this in the clips (I'm Belgian and speak Dutch) I rewatched the translated clips and saw that there was once an error. For example EP3 Clip 9 when Younes told Yasmina he gave the bottle away. He said he gave it to a (!) 'kotgenoot'. A kot is a building where you have different rooms. ...
anon cont: Most of those rooms have a little fridge and microwave in them and that is the kitchen. So it's not that you are living together. In my case I had two different 'kots' and I only knew one other person who lived there. I didn't even saw the other persons. Which is not always the case, but a kot is most of the time not a place you live together with other people. Translations can sometimes be tricky (they are doing an amazing job, couldn't do it any better), but in my opinion there was never really an emphasis on a roommate. So Younes actually said: I gave it to someone who lives in my building. That said, I hope I'm totally wrong because the theories about Badr / Sander / the roommate/ Aïchas brother would be amazing.
Hey there!! thank you for all this information. First am going to link to my previous kot rundown provided by a belgian here. So from my understanding Kot’s can have various formulations. Sometimes they have a shared kitchen with mini fridges in every room. Sometimes they have no kitchen. Sometimes its an apt with shared bedrooms. It seems like overall it depends on what kinda of kot you have. Since we saw Younes’s Kot we can make some assumptions. Younes has a kitchen inside his kot we see it here, loft bedroom and a sitting area and a vanity sink but he doesnt have a bathroom because if he did am sure he would have made elias through up in a toilet not a bucket. So he basically lives in a studio and he is sharing the bathroom with another tenant probably his next door neighbor.  So this is who I assume is the 'kotgenoot' whoever he shares his bathroom with. Here is the current rundown of the roommate and aicha’s brother mention headcount:
The roommate has been mentioned 2 times (I thought there was a 3rd but i cant find it): E02, Clip 9 here E03, Clip 9 here
And Aicha’s brother has been mentioned 2 times:
E02, Clip 1 here and here via text.
And then we are assuming Badr has a bel!mikael and so its one of these possible suspects.
So here is my question dutch speakers the way these sentence are conjugated. Is it clear that the roommate is not Aicha’s brother? and are they two separate people? or could they still be one person or the same person? Because I can’t speak/read dutch I can’t tell by how Younes is phrasing things. Also is younes saying 'kotgenoot’ in a loose term like just some random in my building or someone he may actually know? Please tell me. Thank you!!

Maradona’s Legs, a film by Firas Khoury; Germany/Palestine | 2019
(trailer attached)
Director's Statement
It is safe to say that according to our film history, we are summed up as the “occupied people”, as if we have no other stories beyond this notion. Despite my strong faith in cinema as a tool of resistance, and its ability to express and deliver impactful messages on the masses, I see the importance in continuing the narration of our personal stories, which serves as the best proof of the continuation of our existence as a nation. The history of people is merely a collection of their stories. One of the reasons our cinema directly concentrates on the occupation topic is the demand/expectation from European sponsors (the central funders for Arab independent films). The critical view towards our current cinema could suggest that we will disappear - our stories will disappear - when the occupation does. This brings grief to my heart. In my previous short film “Yellow Mums”, I recounted my story as a Palestinian Christian child during Easter in my village, Galilee. And here, I recount my story as a Palestinian child during the FIFA World Cup tournament. I do not have any deeper or truer reason to why I want to shoot this short film, other than the fact that I simply feel that is my duty to tell this story. Because despite of being a personal story “Maradona’s Legs” cannot be isolated from Palestine’s political reality; the society portrayed is one that encourages other nations, one who raises other nations’ flags who are competing in the World Cup; it is a society that has no country and is prohibited from raising its own national flag. I aspire to tell the story that occurred to me and my brother in our childhood during the World Cup. Back then, our inspirations as children were no different than those of any child in the world - which is for their team to win. Our ambition was to merely fill the “World Cup album” until the last image. In the script, I used sophisticated vocabulary, such as “fulfillment”, “despair”, “destruction”, “depression” and “pain” to describe the children’s feelings. I deliberately exaggerated in order to remain loyal to my emotions as a child and the way I recall them. Brazil’s victory and the World Cup album would have distinguished between me being a happy or a sad child at that time; and that is what I will portray in the film. When Brazil loses, Rafat will be “destroyed”— there is no other way to describe it. There is no other way to film it. Being a Palestinian Israeli - I belong to the group Palestinians who stayed in their lands after the creation of the state of Israel - does not only add a second layer to my films - this situation makes daily reality full of contradictions. In my films I discuss the situation of the Palestinian community inside Israel. “Maradona’s Legs” takes place during the nineties, the time when the first Palestinian uprising took place – and is wrapped in a coming of age story, seen through the innocent eyes of two little boys.
I watched this short film with my BRYTE family during the Providence Children’s Film Festival in February.
It really spoke to them.
Haneen, my tutee, brought it up when we spoke the other day. I found the Director’s Note, which I think says a lot -- says it all.

Hi, can i ask for recommendations about music and more in french. 'Cause I'm really trying to improve my understanding of the language but i don't know where to start. If it's not bother only
HELLO! Why of course, I don’t know if you’re still interested in French songs but I do have a ton for you to listen to!!
Starting with Chikita by Jul i’m kidding please that’s like the one embarrassing kid in the family that we’re ashamed of and hide upstairs when guests come over
Anyway, you’re right, listening to French songs can help you handle more the language as it is a very difficult one, but don’t worry friendo I got your back :)
Do keep in mind that I’ve tried making the most exhaustive list I could (it took me 7 hours to compile all of this, I beg for mercy) but if anyone wants to reblog this with additional songs, you’re more than welcome!!
Okay, I’m putting here regular songs that I personally really love. It’s a huge mix of newer and older songs. If there’s one thing you need to know about French songs is that there’s no such thing as old songs, and you’d be surprised to know that most French people still listen to songs their grandparents listened to. Some of them are very very kitsch, but the emotional aspect most of us, French speakers, have with these songs justifies everything.
La Bohème - Charles AznavourI initially put it a lot lower in the list, but then I figured it straight up deserved the first spot because that’s the one French song anyone who wants to listen to French music should listen to first. It’s a monument. Honestly.
La Jument de Michao - Nolwenn Leroy
Belle Demoiselle - Christophe Maé
On s’attache - Christophe Maé
Double Je - Christophe Willem
Soulman - Ben L’Oncle Soul
Moi Lolita - Julien Doré
Paris-Seychelles - Julien Doré
Chou Wasabi - Julien DoréThere are 2 versions of this song, the bridge being either in French or in English depending on the version. I included the link with the English bridge version, but free to you to check the other version if you like the song :)
Papaoutai - StromaeVERY SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART OVER HERE.
Formidable - Stromae
Tous les Mêmes - Stromae
Peace or Violence - Stromae
Dernière Danse - IndilaI’m not personally a huge fan of this song anymore as I’ve been hearing it waaaay too much here and there, but the singer really did the cool thing of trying to write a song that reminds you of the old French songs, and the lyrics are quite easy to understand as well. Still, it’s my least favourite of this list. I’m putting it because I think it’s a good thing to suggest for your request, I guess.
En Apesanteur - Calogero
Ecris l’histoire - Gregory LemarchalAny French person you ask probably had their Gregory Lemarchal era and honestly, the songs are super old but I just love him way too much
Même Si - Gregory Lemarchal ft. Lucie SilvasOkay that’s like a monument of French music. It’s a half-half song with Gregory singing all the French parts but it’s just so good. I can’t find a good audio, so you’re gonna have to deal with the music video which kind of breaks the song somewhere around the bridge but it’s good nevertheless.
Sous le vent - Garou ft. Céline Dion
Mistral Gagnant - Lara FabianThe original one is sung by Renaud and a looot of people are going to say it’s the best version, but I personally prefer this one. One of my all time favourites here. There’s no audio version though as it’s a live.
Je T’aime - Lara FabianStraight up hands down the one French song that the entirety of France knows. It’s like… I wouldn’t even be surprised if people know it more than the actual anthem of the country. It’s just the first thing you should even listen to when it comes to French songs, I don’t even know why I didn’t put it first in the list.
Pour que tu m’aimes encore - Céline Dion
Savoir Aimer - Florent PagnyUnrelated but he sings this one Andrea Bocelli song “Caruso” in such a beautiful way. If you can find it, listen to it. But it’s in italian.
Femme Libérée - Cookie Dingler
Mon amie la rose - Natacha Atlas
Aïcha - Khaled
Here I’m gonna put classics of French music. I’m separating here, and I was meaning to just put everything and everything but I wouldn’t like you to mistake commercial music with these. So aside from the first song of Charles Aznavour that I put first, everything I listed previously are from the 90′s to today. Those I’m gotta put down here are “timeless” songs.I haven’t put as many songs as one would wish, but do trust me when I say there are waaaaay too many of them. But if you’re interested in this kind of music, re-ask me and I’ll spend exclusive time to that list.
Emmenez-Moi - Charles Aznavour
Dans le port d’Amsterdam - Jacques BrelYou might not like him firsthand because he’s… Well, he’s special. But French people are very fond of him, and I quite like some of his songs, though they come straight from his guts in terms of intensity haha. I’m gonna put next a song from his that you probably know which is far more famous: Ne Me Quitte Pas
Ne Me Quitte Pas - Jacques BrelI’m giving you a link to his best of because I can’t find a good version of the song. But it’s the first one of the video so don’t worry.
Göttingen - BarbaraThis woman here is just incredible. Really. She has such a wonderful voice and her lyrics are a work of art if you care to read them. She was a singer from the 50′s so she’s super duper old but wow intensely timeless in my opinion.
Dis, quand reviendras-tu ? - Barbara
Je te donne - Jean-Jacques GoldmanOkay this guy is one of my very favourite French singers of all time. He has a very special place in my heart and I’m fighting myself not to just slam all of his songs in this list. But do youtube him.
Je marche seul - Jean-Jacques Goldman
La vie par procuration - Jean-Jacques Goldman
Alexandrie, Alexandra - Claude François
Belle, belle, belle - Claude François
Le téléphone pleure - Claude François
Elle a les yeux revolver - Marc Lavoine
Here, I’m going to put musicals and cartoons because they’re an entire world as well. Maybe you don’t know it, but France has a very good musicals culture. Along with that, cartoon songs, like Disney, are very good if you want to learn French as the singers spell well all their words, and the fact that you know the song already in your native language can help. For the musicals, I’m going to prioritise audio versions since the aim is for you to have good audio. However, if you like them, watching the live versions is definitely worth it :)
Belle - Garou, Patrick Bruel, Daniel Lavoie (Notre-Dame de Paris)
Le Temps des Cathédrales - Bruno Pelletier (Notre-Dame de Paris)
L’Assasymphonie - Florent Mothe (Mozart l’Opéra Rock)
Those three are my favourite favourite, but you can go check “Les Amants de la Bastille”, “Le Rouge et le Noir”, “Le Roi Soleil” and “Roméo et Juliette” for more musicals. Now on with the cartoon songs. That’s gonna be long but I’m not gonna put everything. Feel free to look up your own favourite songs :) I’m huge Disney garbage, added to all the animated movies I’ve watched. I’m not gonna write the name of the singers though I know them, to make it easier.
L’Air du Vent - Pocahontas (Colors of the Wind)
Des Sauvages - Pocahontas (Savages)
Je Voudrais Déjà Être Roi - Le Roi Lion / Lion King (I Can’t Wait to Be King)
Comme un homme - Mulan (Like a Man)
Jamais je n’avouerai - Hercules (I Won’t Say I’m In Love)
Enfant de L’Homme - Tarzan (Son of Man)
Je Veux Savoir - Tarzan (I Want to Know)
Entre Deux Mondes - Tarzan (Two Worlds)
Je M’en Vais - Frère des Ours / Bear Brothers (On My Way)
Infernal - Le Bossu de Notre-Dame / Hunchback of Notre Dame (Infernal)
Partir Là-Bas - The Little Mermaid (Part of Your World)I do believe the movie has been edited like 3 times by Disney and they changed the singer every time. But I’m a good old 90′s kid and the only version I tolerate is the one I grew up with, meaning with the original Ariel voice. So careful if you go youtube that again. The link I provided is, in my opinion, the best.
Le Monde Qui Est Le Mien - Hercules (Go The Distance)
Je Défendrai Ma Vie - Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (I Will Defend My Life)I’m putting the movie version, but I advise you to go check the full audio for better quality.
Dégage - Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Sonne Le Clairon - Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Loin du Froid de Décembre - Anastasia (Once Upon a December)
La Seine - Un Monstre à ParisOne of my all time animated songs ever. Really. An amazing French movie with amazing songs like thank bless.

I would like to know more about this Immanuel individual if you're willing to tell. I like his style
omgggg he's my oc!!
I'm still worldbuilding so bare w me ok.
MENTIONS OF CSA/R*PE SUICIDE AND INC/ST (Immanuel sweetie I am so sorry)
Immanuel Rubin was born in kiryas, a Jewish "city" near NYC (*Immanuel voice* I wouldn't call it a ghetto but it's definitely a ghetto). Both his parents are haredic (his father's name is yisrael, he's Romanian Jewish and his mother, Batya, is Moroccan jewish. Both his parents are werewolves) and he's the 7th out of 10 children, but he was mostly "raised" by his oldest brother, yedidya, who's 10 years older than him. He grew up poor, his mother worked in retail and his father studied Torah. He started studying Torah when he was 3.
(CSA and Inc/st ment) when he was 8 his paternal cousin, dikla, who was 8 years older than him, started assaulting him (p regularly, their families met during holidays, his parents knew about it and told him to keep quiet). He knew he was gay since he was about 15, and used to like, make out w other boys at his cheyder. (He didn't even consider coming out to anyone except one of his maternal cousins, evyatar, who he knew is bi. His mother's twin sister, Vivian, is v accepting and kind) When he was 16-19 he had a boyfriend, Avshalom. Avshalom got married (to a woman) when they were 19, and killed himself on his own wedding night. Avshalom's parents dug through their son's room and found letters and texts between them, and also a (very sfw btw) movie Avshalom made about Immanuel, and decided to out Immanuel to his parents. Immanuel's parents consulted Immanuel's rabbi (who doesn't have a name yet), who decided to r/pe him to try and hurt him enough he'll never want to be with a man again.
His parents threw him out and told his siblings he died, his closest mentor r/ped him, but his maternal aunt (and uncle) Vivian and Yaakov Guetta, took him in.
Even though everything that happened to him was "in the name of religion" Immanuel is still religious (although not haredic, in his own way) and believe g-d loves him and everything has a reason. He prays and keeps kosher and shabbat.
He started a band with 2 of his cousins, evyatar and alona (who's a trans woman), and with their friends Roni, tamir and yaeer. (Roni then became evyatar's gf and later they got married)
When the story starts he's 25, living in nyc, preforming w his band (he sings and can play guitar, violin and piano), overall individual standup and plays and sings w other artists.
Then he meets Nuri, and they fall in love p quickly. About 4 months into their relationship, Immanuel's maternal grandfather dies, and he goes back to his aunt and uncle in kiryas, now with Nuri.
Nuri is a royal. His paternal uncle is the king of the maghreb (it's one kingdom here it's important for the story). He left Tunisia when he was 20 with his mother, brother and sister. He got turned into a vampire when he was 24. He's a med student (his mother, Aïcha, is a doctor)
(I have a long backstory for him but that's another post)
(2 years into their relationship Nuri turns Immanuel, in a v consenting way, so they can be together forever)
I think that at some point (after Immanuel and Nuri marry and have 2 kids), Immanuel builds a synagogue that's open for anyone disappointed and traumatized by their communities.
