I don’t know who needs to hear this, but androgynous people aren’t oppressing you by being androgynous.
Non-binary people with an androgynous gender presentation are not the reason that society at large won’t accept you as non-binary.
It’s not because you’re feminine that society doesn’t accept you as non-binary. It’s because you’re non-binary that society doesn’t accept you as non-binary.
It’s not because you’re masculine that society doesn’t accept you as non-binary. It’s because you’re non-binary that society doesn’t accept you as non-binary.
It’s not because you’re gender conforming wrt your AGAB that society doesn’t accept you as non-binary. It’s because you’re non-binary that society doesn’t accept you as non-binary.
We live in a binary society, and being non-binary in any way is a threat to that. Having an androgynous presentation doesn’t suddenly make it non-threatening.
Society doesn’t want you to be androgynous. It wants you to not exist.

I also think it's rly weird when ppl talk abt androgyny bc ppl always discuss it as an abstract concept cruelly inflicted upon them and not like real actually living people's gender and gender presentation? Like it's rly fucking dehumanizing to listen to ppl talk abt androgyny in this conceptual way that's caused them harm without any consideration for people who are androgynous who might be reading or listening, as if we just don't exist except as an idea to make them feel bad ig lol

Non-binary people don’t owe you femininity.
Femininity is not a requirement for being non-binary. You can present as androgynous as you want and still be non-binary. Being androgynous instead of conforming to femininity 100% does not change who you are.
“Non-binary” can look like anything, including androgynous.

“non-binary people don’t owe you androgyny”
No matter what we do or how we present, people are still going to insist that we’re not really non-binary. They’re still going to insist that we’re “really men” or “really women”, that we have to be one or the other.
People don’t want non-binary folk to be androgynous, they want us to not exist.

Like I can not stress enough that if your post abt binarism and exorsexism says something negative abt androgyny, it's no longer about binarism and exorsexism. The point you're making becomes totally different. The only thing that matters in that post is whatever opinion you've expressed about androgyny

I think the thing that deeply frustrates me is that when ppl say "it's ok for nonbinary people to look masculine or feminine or have traits often associated with masculinity/femininity" then that's a perfectly fine commentary on the gender binary and social expectations but when you end that with "as opposed to being androgynous" you're no longer commenting on the gender binary and the implication immediately shifts to "gendered traits are at odds with being androgynous and by default indicate binary gender, and of the two I think more positively of the latter"

Promoting the idea that the nebulous concept of androgyny is the Default Gender Preformance of being nonbinary and its somehow an offensive stereotype AND the nonbinary version of being gender conforming was a Mistake

I get accused of Word Soup posts sometimes and its like yes i know these words are highly technical and some are even academic queer theory terms and concepts but you have to understand that much like academia sometimes if i tried to make it easier to parse it would be like hundreds of words long bc i would be explaining the entire concept down to its roots (or its assumed roots for a queer person who likely regularly occupies specific online spaces; it would be much longer if the person im talking to is a cis straight binary person who doesnt spend much time online) and its much quicker to say "androgynous presentation isnt the nonbinary version of gender conforming and insinuating such grossly misunderstands the relationship of gender preformance and the gender binary and binarism in general" or what have you, and yes its a Lot Of Words ppl dont usually use but its densely packed with a lot of concepts abt gender theory and queer theory that sometimes i dont feel like making a much longer post abt bc the concepts themselves at play are highly technical but they DO matter
I can obviously just say "thinking nonbinary ppl being androgynous is the same as a man being traditionally masculine or a woman being traditionally feminine is Bad" and i DO and it IS useful but its not rly examining the theories and social structures involved that lead us here either. Ppl speak on Complicated Ideas About Social Structures Relating To Queer People and i respond to those ideas, i didnt invent them to seem Smart

The idea that greater society is accepting of people of any gender who present androgynously is so fucking wack and i feel like if ppl spent 5 minutes thinking abt it outside of the intracommunity microcosm that manufactures so many takes abt nonbinary and gender non conforming ppl theyd fucking realize that lol
