What’s with TG stans bragging about Aegon keeping his king title?

It’s a patriarchal system. It’s standard procedure.

It doesn’t signify that he was the rightful king, especially since he is continuously referred to as a usurper long after.

Maegor kept his king title too, even though he was also a usurper. You see him as a winner because of that? He lost everything. He had no legacy. He had no heirs to continue his bloodline and he died a most pathetic death (just like Aegon).

Aegon’s situation was actually much worse because his enemies (the Blacks) had defeated his forces and were coming to King’s Landing in order to dethrone him.

Basically, Aegon keeping his title was pure luck. He was already defeated. But he was so hated, he ended up poisoned. No one in the Red Keep had the patience to see him through a trial.

Aegon the Uncrowned was the rightful king and yet he wasn’t granted the title he deserved in histories because his usurping uncle killed him. Rhaenyra, the rightful Queen, was also killed by a usurper and then this guy himself declared her a Princess (something which wasn’t changed later on for the sake of peace).

So, the way I see it, it wasn’t the Realm who decided on these titles. It was Aegon himself. But as proven by Asoiaf history, titles are meaningless, especially when everyone knows who the true monarch was.

Esp the "did Rhaenyra betray herself" one from the take, a supposedly "feminist" video essay channel.

They say that bc Rhae had bastards and had sex out of wedlock, she deserves to be punished just for not laying down and taking beatings and "being happy" with a man incapable of loving her ROMANTICALLY. No matter WHAT she did, she would have been usurped. Thats the WHOLE point of the story. 🤦

I admit I haven't watched any of those videos — I knew they would enrage me and they would waste my time, so there wasn't any point in doing it. Even so, there is much to unpack here.

The attitude towards Rhaenyra from supposed "feminists" is beyond upsetting. They want for Rhaenyra to be submissive, obedient, subservient, to "shut up and endure". In their twisted vision, this is what makes a woman "worthy" — biting her tongue and being a perpetual victim (you can see how sick this is).

For them, a man (say Robert Baratheon) can fuck around and have as many bastards as he wishes, but if a woman has sex outside of marriage they slut shame her and deem her not fit to rule.

Mind you, Aegon II is a canonical rapist on screen and a sexual abuser in the book. When they search for him in the book, they find him having sex with a 12 years old girl - let that sink in, please!

Rhaenyra has to be a paragon of morality and purity and virtue — not Aegon though! He's the true king because has a dick between his legs!

But somehow it is Rhaenyra — Rhaenyra who was forced into her marriage with a gay man, Rhaenyra whose sons were recognized and accepted by Laenor and Corlys as true Velaryons, Rhaenyra whose sons were, above everything else, her heirs, through her and her alone — that is the villain and the monster, and unworthy to rule.

And I wonder if these people's hatred for Rhaenyra isn't actually them projecting and hating the autonomy that Rhaenyra displays in refusing to comply with her unhappy situation/marriage. She seeks joy and pleasure elsewhere! She doesn't just sit there and take it! And they loathe her for it!

God forbid if you're a woman and love sex!

"How dare Rhaenyra have sex outside of marriage?" Ma'am, the Middle Ages called. They want their mysoginistic and patriarchal concepts back!

Even more, since in their perception Rhaenyra defies her "duty" through her body (by having extramarital sex), they cheer for her being tortured, enduring physical suffering and ultimately having a gruesome death (see here).

Rhaenyra being slut shamed is also, tragically, a regular and common theme in this fandom:

Alicent claims she wants honour and goodness to overcome feel pretty thin, when she wants her son; a known rapist (and a regular visitor to child fighting pits), on the throne over Rhaenyra, whose greatest sin Alicent knows of is having consenting sex with a man who isn't her husband, with the full knowledge of her father, husband and husband's father, and making the accepted and beloved children of that relationship her heirs.

Alicent knows Aegon is a monster. She wants him to be king. She claims to be acting in the interest of the subjects. She's lying. To herself more than anyone.

I feel like this is going to be controversial, but I trust my TB. I feel like..if he wasn't an abusive rapist, and bully. I could, could...have at least tolerated Aegon, maybe even liked him. He seems to have some sort of awareness of how much of a cunt he is. And even what his mother really is. Wasn't it him that asked his own mother if she loved him? Wasn't it him that said his own father doesn't like him? After defending Nyra's claim, over n over? He could have been more than he is... oh well

If it weren't for the fact that Aegon is a rapist who enjoys watching young children (including his own) fight brutally for survival, he might have been the easiest character to like in TG, at least at first. Except for Helaena, but she's barely a character. Aegon was the greatest victim of his mother and grandfather. He was abused physically and mentally, they tried to brainwash him into believing that he should be the king despite his king, father and sister, but he still believed that it did not belong to him. However, these first two things make me dislike him. And that's good, because Aegon quickly went from "what kind of brother steals his sister's throne" to "bring me the head of the old cunt and cut off my nephew's ears", showing that he is his mother's son.

I’ve never really seen anyone talking about this, but I noticed that one of the main reasons why I am team green is because team green feels like an actual team that is this whole thing together.

Team Green feels connected, united, like a family.

Team Black on the other hand is… meh.

And let me explain why:

Rhaenyra being delusional and thinking that Daemon is actually in love with her when he literally just groomed her since she was a child because he has always been after her title and now wants to be her king consort. They have one of the most toxic, creepy and problematic relationships in the entire fucking show.

Then there is the very awkward and uncomfortable moment of Rhaenyra and Daemon having sex on Laena’s funeral, while Rhaenys, Corlys, Baela, Rhaena and Laenor are mourning the loss of their daughter, mother and sister. How fucking disrespectful is this. And then the fact that they have Laenor “killed” just so they can get married and have their own perfectly blonde targaryen babies.

And Rhaenyra lying about Jace, Luke and Joff to everyone in her very own “team”, trying to gaslight not only Corlys, and Rhaenys but also her own sons into thinking they are trueborn, when even Jace himself. as a child, starts asking questions.

Then there are obviously Rhaenys and Corlys, who for some fucking reason neglected their trueborn granddaughters in favor of some dark haired white bastards their daughter-in-law is trying to pass off as their son’s children. Rhaenys is trying sooo hard to please her misogynistic husband because he so desperately wants his name to go down in history. Then the disrespectful betrothal of Jace and Luke to Baela and Rhaena. Rhaenyra is literally robbing these poor girls of their rightful claim to Driftmark and usurping them. And now, with Luke being dead, Rhaena’s claim dies with him.

Baela and Rhaena losing their mother, and now their father suddenly remarries, and has two blonde boys. Rhaenys losing BOTH her children and then seeing her son-in-law and daughter-in-law getting married soon after that.

Everyone in team black is after their own ambitions. They lie to each other, they don’t trust each other, they suspect each other in different things, they cheat on each other (with each other) and lie about it, they give each other forced ultimatums, and yada yada. All their scenes feel forced, tense, awkward and uncomfortable. They look so miserable with each other.

Team Green in this sense is the exact opposite.

Although their dynamic is far from perfect, obviously, you cannot deny that they care about each other very very deeply.

Alicent loves all of her children, and even while acknowledging their flaws, she still loves them.

Aemond might’ve been a little envious of Aegon, but he would never turn his back on him. He would never betray his brother, be would never try to take his crown from him.

Aegon was far from being a perfect man and king, but, as we know, it was his love for his family, and the fear of them getting hurt that made him a more responsible person and a more protective father, husband and brother. Sure, he is a cheater, but at least he’s honest about it and doesn’t lie to his wife. He is not a hypocrite.

Criston is working for Alicent not for ambition or for self-gain, but because he genuinely loves her, whether it’s romantic or platonic, doesn’t matter.

Helaena would never betray her family, her brothers, her mother. They are all she has. She would never switch sides even if given an opportunity.

And even Otto, arguably one of the main villains of the whole show, still loves his family. Sure, he is ambitious, but he would never become Corlys level of ambitious.

Team Green feels like they are fighting against the enemy all together, they have the same goals, they feel united and you can feel their devotion to each other. Especially after blood and cheese, when they become closer than ever. They’re in this together and only if they stick to each other, they can make it. It feels genuine and honest. They don’t hide anything from each other, they always have their loved ones’ best interests at heart, they would never in a million years betray each other. Yes, they are all doomed from the start, but their dedication and love to each other is truly something else.
