now that it's been long enough since thirteen's era has ended for me to reasonably be able to do some sort of retrospective can i just honestly ask: what the fuck is going on with thasmin???
like. okay i watched the whole thing through. all 3 season and all the specials. outside of the "designated thasmin scenes" where thirteen and yaz make googly eyes at each other or say something romantic, there's literally no indication in the entire story of there being any chemistry between the two.
thirteen and yaz don't even seem like good friends. they both barely have personalities of their own. i would've loved an actual thasmin romance plot à la ninerose or tenrose or hell, even eleven/river (who i still don't like but at least they actually flirted????). even clara/eleven had some sort of chemistry and tension going on that could be interpreted as romantic.
and then they just write in that yaz is on the same level as river (the doctor's wife. implied wife at minimum. who they spent 24 years with on darilium???). i don't even think river and the doctor got proper development of their relationship but at least there's something. there's something you can point to and say look, that shows they care about each other. thasmin have nothing.

(this is a rambly rant feel free to ignore)
Legend of the Sea Devils is absolutely bonkers bad. Like oh my gosh words don't describe it I don't think I can take people seriously now they bemoan Love and Monsters that was fun until we got a bad monster and a weird joke at the end. That was charming.
This is....insanely bad. There are sequences in this episode where you can tell none of the actors were filming in the same place and like it actively is disorienting between shots. I know COVID was a big problem for production but no that does not excuse this ugly episode.
Also I have been suffering to get through these seasons in the first place this is a firmly anti Chibnall take I think there's been maybe three episodes of these I've half enjoyed anyway I hate Thasmin. Like I can't stand River Song and found myself defending her honor in this episode because no Yaz is not a character let alone a good love interest.
As a matter of fact the notion people think the Doctor and Yaz is a good pairing that makes sense to this show is a completely wild take as well, these two are giving Ten and Martha energy
Sorry not sorry I'm so excited to almost be done with this only one episode left

Canon Thasmin is very unearned. I think the ship is cute and would like it to work out as a good story. The Thasmin part is fine where it is. However the fleshing out of their friendship needed to happen way earlier. The Flux and "revolution of the daleks" was a start but there seemed to be a whole series of solo adventures we didn't get to see before Dan. I would have liked to see those.
Especially if you're going to have the doctor saying Yasmin is up there with River Song. You can't just tell me Yasmin is up there with River Song, You have to show me that Yasmin is up there with River Song. I want to see this happening onscreen rather than being told it's happening.
I'm all for a good confession talk scene on a beach but you gotta earn that a bit through show not tell. Even if it was the only well written part of legend of the sea devils. I want to see their friendship blossoming before my eyes, instead of just being told that it did.
I really hope this isn't handled poorly in the regeneration finale.

I only have about two complaints with this episode
Only two things. I still think Yasmin should’ve died. Not out of malice or anything like that. I just think it would’ve been shocking. Like Adric’s death was back in the day. And River should’ve come back for a cameo. Thirteen should’ve shared the screen with her wife.
Everything else was great. Rasputin master. Ace. Tegan. Melanie. Jo. IAN!!!! Kate. Graham. Fourteen. No thasmin. One. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Everything about it was great. But if those two things were included it would’ve gone from a 9.9 to a full on 10/10

So...according to the producer.......this pairing wasn’t originally meant to even be A Thing™. Which...yeah. Yeah, that shows.

So we can repeatedly bring up the Flux and Timeless Child, but you’re going to list all of the Doctor’s significant relationships and not mention the one from 3 episodes ago? Fuck that.
All it would have taken for me to be able accept this as a bittersweet but still beautifully continuation of thirteen’s journey would have been one mention of the most significant person in her life over the last century. Instead I feel like the RTD and Moffat stans got acknowledgement and closure and we got slapped across the face.

Thasmin & How the Changing of Showrunners Handicapped Their Story
You know what? I'm going to rant about it. I've been thinking about Doctor Who from a Watsonian versus Doylist point of view on a constant basis, especially when it comes to showrunners and how the doctor is handed over from showrunner to showrunner and how the exit of Yaz from the show is it possibly the clearest example in the world of this feeling of a showrunner being switched. I'm not talking writing differences, I'm not talking stylistic differences, I'm talking the way that she left the show. Because I would put all of my life savings on the fact that if Thirteen and fourteen had the same show runner, Yaz would have been able to stay around for 13's regeneration. You can feel the writing of the show STRAINING to justify why Thirteen would dump her/leave her behind. It feels abrupt because it IS. Rose got to continue her story with 10 until its organic end. Same with Clara. Hell, even River, though her circumstances were slightly different. There is literally no reason why Fourteen wouldn't go after her the moment the 60th specials end except for the fact that for some absolutely weird reason RTD didn't mention Yaz ONCE despite 14 being more "emotionally open" than the Doctors before him.
Like, I'm going to be honest. I'm mostly ambivalent on Thasmin. I think they're sweet and had potential and got screwed in the build up in seasons 11 and 12 (up until Revolution, even). But if I was y'all I would be PISSED. Because that kind of treatment of Yaz and Thasmin as a love story sucked from both the Power of the Doctor AND the 60th anniversary specials. No closure. No real explanation. No acknowledgement of the main love story of the last showrunner. (Even Steven Moffat name-dropped Bad Wolf/Rose in the 50th special, though he did also have the whole 10th Doctor running around with Elizabeth I thing so maybe that cancels itself out.) The mechanics of the show and how it's run screwed you over. And I'm sorry. I hope y'all get some acknowledgement in 15's Era. I'll be pleasantly and happily surprised if we get a cameo (or some miraculous wrap-up of the storyline ala Husbands of River Song), but seeing how the most logical place for a mention (the toymaker) came and went without a peep I'm not hedging my bets.
(Going to go check out some fanfic, though- and imagine that fourteen took off towards Sheffield the moment the 60th anniversary wrapped!)

Please I'm so so curious to hear your thoughts on 10/14
Ok so my thoughts on 10 are less than 14 so let’s start with him lol. I have not watched 10, so my hatred of him is more hatred by proxy of how the fandom treats him and proxy of 14, but I still do have a few specific thoughts and this will be long and definitely rambly
A) when talking about him I usually refer to him as Fandom’s Favorite White Boy or Pathetic Wet Cat/Twink mostly because it’s funny but for now I’ll use 10. The most I know about 10 is that he is angsty and in love with rose and besties with Donna… also that he’s pathetic but that’s more vibes
So- my hate of 10 is less tangible than 14 but i still have a few points, the main one being the way i see ppl talk about how he treated Martha and how obsessed with rose he was. I don’t think it’s ever compelling to have someone’s main personality trait be loving someone a whole lot which also honestly is my problem with rose (don’t hate her but don’t care about her)
From what I have seen and heard of 10 it’s rather… boring, honestly? Like it’s mostly clips out of context but for 13 and 15 I saw clips out of context and was like “ok wth is happening? /pos” with 10 it’s more like “wtf?” Also pretty sure his episodes were some of the ones I saw when my parents had the show on that played a part in me swearing the show off so
Ok onto the more tangible hatred of 14. A lot of this, admittedly, is more about the writing and showrunner decisions than 14 but those things by proxy makes me hate him
So- I have a lot of feelings on him quite literally starting from his first appearance in power of the doctor. I am SO PETTY that he doesn’t wear 13’s silly little outfit. Like I have gone on full rants about that fact to my friends and family
I’ve seen something claim that rtd didn’t want 14 to wear her outfit because people might be transphobic and derogatory towards him (even tho Dhawan!master wore it, and it’s pretty gender neutral) but then did nothing about the shit ppl said about ruby’s actor or about ppl who would be a bitch about rose the second being nonbinary(also i remember seeing a post about their deadname being mentioned in an episode? Not totally sure that’s true tho)
The 60th anniversary specials themselves don’t really celebrate Dr who as a whole as much as 10’s run with a few old villains but that’s not really my main issue with that. My main issue with the specials is that the Doctor gets their happy ending. With Donna. And her family. When fucking 3-4 episodes prior, their happy ending would’ve been yaz. It would’ve been staying with yaz. But nope! Donna! Because that’s what 10 would’ve wanted.
And I don’t want 14 to be with yaz, btw, I mean I want them to meet and for yaz to hit him, but I don’t want them to be a thing or like be together because I believe yaz is a lesbian but that’s not the point of this so moving on
I also have very much big issues with the scene where 15 and 14 are (presumably, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the full scene) talking about women they love and mention who I assume to be River and rose but not yaz, who again, they wanted to spend forever with 3-4 episodes prior. It makes the doctor seem like a douchebag even if it’s a writing issue and not a character issue
Also 14 being David tenant overshadows 13’s departure and 15’s arrival and since he is most likely going to show up at least a little bit in s14 he’ll overshadow 15 in his own series. It’s icky at the very least.
There’s something inherently bad about having the fandoms Favorite White Boy be with a contentious casting decision (because I have no faith in the Dr who fandom not to be bigoted) and even if no one has an issue with 15 being black and maybe gay (is he gay? He gives gay vibes) it’s still setting him up for failure by pairing him with 14
Also bigeneration is so fucking dumb and I hate it
Also also stop giving the Dr 19 year old companions it’s getting kinda weird now

dear dw people responsible for dw novels:
how about, instead of giving us novelisations of episodes nobody has seen yet (and quite a few people are not ecstatic about), you give us original stories from the time the thirteenth doctor was travelling with yaz between series 12 and 13? how about that, something many people definitely would be willing to pay for?

Murray Gold used snippets of his themes for Amy, Clara and Bill during the puppet show scene. I just realised that by ignoring Yaz entirely, we missed out on Gold's version of Segun Akinola's Yaz theme. As if I didn't have enough reasons to be annoyed at RTD...

Such an amazing send off for Jodie Whitaker. The only thing that could’ve made it better was a Donna cameo. But eh. Needs must.
