ik we talk a lot about Toland and Shin and Asher et. al. when we talk about our odd destiny guys but I think Jalaal needs some love in these conversations. He's a spacer. He's the head of an organization that wants to gtfo from Sol before humanity is done in by like 10 different extinction level threats. He analyzed Truth To Power with Ikora, and philosophized about what Savathun is up to. He rolled up to the aftermath of the Battle of Saturn with the interstellar equivalent of a tow truck and asked to take the scrap. He's a little into the idea of being force-choked by Petra. His aesthetic is kinda goth cryptarch appalachian trail thru-hiker. Why are we sleeping on him?

I swear the phrase “O Guardian Mine” from the tweet about next season rings a bell, is there some lore book with that phrase or something? I might be misremembering but it sounded familiar.
It is familiar! It's a phrase used by Ahamkara, Worm Gods, Savathun and often Calus. The phrase is part of Anthem Anatheme, a sort of ability of paracausal power to make reality match what you desire. From Truth to Power:
Riven feeds on the Anthem Anatheme which is the perverse coercion of Reality to match Desire.
And here as well:
I've been correlating information on the Ahamkara and the Hive worm parasites. Both display a peculiar ability to convert the host's intent into an ontomorphic, reality-altering effect. Both use similar language in their appeal to the host. I don't think they're the same species, however. The Hive worms spawn large numbers of young from relatively few adults, always display the same physical form, and live in communal groups. The Ahamkara are solitary, elusive, and seem to alter form to suit (or confuse) expectations. The shared syntax "o _ mine" may be the key—it seems to be a shibboleth used to invoke an ontomorphic effect, placing the target in a cage of "o" (activational, specific, appealing, and naming) and "mine" (defining ownership and subordination). Ahamkara and worm may have evolved separately to exploit this effect, just as many species independently evolve eyes. This might place them in competition for the same ecological niche. I would expect a rivalry or antipathy between them.
And yes, it's Truth to Power, but Truth to Power has kernels of actual truth which is confirmed by Ikora in Hidden Dossier when she talks about it with Arach Jalaal. This is what she says about Truth to Power:
The documents are full of possible misunderstandings. One misunderstanding is that they are pointless, just complexity for the sake of confusion. The threads about imbaru and power-from-confusion point this way. This is the stance that most amateur Guardian analysts seem to have settled on: it's all a lot of nothing, and there's nothing to understand in it. This is plainly foolish. The text is full of useful intelligence, including an excellent explanation of the Anthem Anatheme and an apparently accurate description of how Riven preyed on Guardians to create the curse.
Even before that, Mara also talks about Anthem Anatheme when she first gets Riven:
It was Mara alone whose singular will and unity of purpose saved the Awoken from that which we now name the Anthem Anatheme. For there was in Mara very little division between Reality-As-Is and Reality-As-Desired; she was confident in her centuries of purpose and patient with the winding way by which the river of methods reaches the objective ocean.
Basically, the reason why Mara and Riven got along fairly well was because Mara had no desire to change reality, so Anthem Anatheme didn't work on her and Riven could not invoke it.
Worm God Xol also mentions it:
So it whispered the Anthem Anatheme, the temptation to dominate the objective universe with the subjective will. It said, I shall be an engine to make your desire hegemon over your conditions.
This is mostly just how it's defined. It's generally used/invoked by saying the phrase "O (subject) mine." Possibly the earliest mention is from Books of Sorrow; Sathona heard it from her father's dead worm:
It’s dead, but it still speaks to me. It says: listen closely, oh vengeance mine…
Sathona then later uses it on her siblings to coerce them to dive into the Fundament. Savathun also used it plenty of times on us, possibly most memorable from Season of the Lost when she used it during a cutscene describing her infiltration scheme. She also used it while talking to us while she was in a crystal.
Calus uniquely used a version "O champion mine" when talking to us.
Ahamkara use it in a variety of ways. For example "O bearer mine" from Skull of Dire Ahamkara, Sealed Ahamkara Grasps and Claws of Ahamkara (this makes sense, because we wear these items). The Ahamkara Azirim, when he tricked the Awoken into jumping off the cliffs, called them "O audience mine." Riven also famously calls us "O murderer mine." More examples as "O jailer mine" and "O seeker mine" and "O wishbringer mine."

I was rereading "Truth To Power" and I remembered your post about OXA / the Device / the Deep. In the "YOU MUST" entry, Medusa (possibly Savathûn) says, "YOU MUST CAST ALL THE LIFE YOU CHERISH INTO A BLACK HOLE." Do you think the "black hole" is related to the triangle portal and/or the Deep?
it's an interesting theory, but no, the black holes repeatedly referenced in truth to power aren't metaphorical, they're referring to actual black holes. with regards to truth to power, Ikora talks about it more in this Record during a conversation with Arach Jalaal. (it's way down near the bottom so you have to scroll a bit.) this conversation is essentially the answer (or rather answers) to the questions of, "what the hell is truth to power?" as well as, "why the hell is truth to power?" In addition it also asks new, more wild questions such as "Did Ikora just almost realize she was a fictional character?" and " Is Savathûn going to try and resurrect herself using the playerbase somehow?" (realistically the answer to that second one is obviously no but like, it's funny to think about)

>You know between all the Dead Orbit stuff being left in an abandoned moldy room to rot, and Shaxx saying that he never liked them and how the best part was that they left, we fully expect to find Arach Jalaal to dead in a ditch somewhere in the future. We also congratulate Dox for their new job as a writer at Bungie. /s
I HAVEN'T HEARD THOSE LINES WHAT THE FUCK SHAXX I TRUSTED YOU.
But I'm honestly really angry about Destiny 2 right now because I'm so glad you can freely edit your guardians appearance now and I'm actually having fun with it again. There's some stuff I'm still upset about but I'm actually having fun with it again.

Jalaal not getting on Petra’s case about Sophia haunts me tbh. To be fair, Jalaal probably doesn’t KNOW about the Sophia- or most of these crimes. We’re just using him here as a vehicle to make some meta commentary. (I really want him to find out about Sophia and get on Petra’s case though.)

I wonder how Jalaal told Lakshmi and Hideo to go fuck themselves when they raised their plan about replacing the Vanguard?  I would have loved to have seen that conversation.  I might put on my Dead Orbit ornaments today, proud in the knowledge that I chose the right faction. :D

I'm kinda sad the story of the Factions ended as it did, I would've very much loved to see Jalaal, Hideo and Lakshmi huddled together over some cheap beer in a Tower cantina if only but once. There's something in the concept of political rivals by day hanging out by night that's appealing to me, and I wish we could have seen them having at least some casual interactions between one another.

Good day!
What lore books would you say are the prerequisites for getting into all things Hive?
I'm not going to include links because tumblr is a jerk about putting posts with links in the tags sometimes, but I will drop them in a reblog.
Books of Sorrow: THE starting point, and arguably one of the two best works of writing in Destiny. The early life of the krill/hive, their pact with the worms, their conquest across the stars and the philosophy of the sword logic are all covered here, as well as the family dynamics of Oryx, Savathun and Xivu Arath, as well as Oryx and his kids. Several aspects of it have changed radically in light of the revelations of The Witch Queen, so even if you've already read it it's probably worth another look.
Truth To Power: Savathun attempts to win the Guardian's trust and friendship by posing as Eris Morn; things spiral from there. Like Savathun, this book is steeped in intentional misdirection, symbolism and allegory, but if you're willing to read between the lines you'll come away with a fair amount of information on her philosophies, plans, and arguably her feelings.
In the WQ Collector's Edition ARG lore book, Ikora Rey and Arach Jalaal discuss the manuscript (which exists as letters from Sav to the Guardian in-universe), its meaning and purpose, and come away with a theory that it's meant to teach the reader to think like Savathun, effectively becoming her - a sort of opposite sword-logic scenario where instead of taking someone's mantle by killing them, instructions on claiming that mantle are given away freely.
Inquisition of the Damned: The story of the chaos and desperation among Crota's broods in the wake of his death, and one set of siblings' heretical response to it. Includes some EXTREMELY juicy bits of information on hive lore, including the origin of the death song, and what's going on with Zulmek, Instrument of Torment.
The cryptoglyph web lore pieces - Hearts, Endure, Dust, Hope and Poison - continue the exploration of the Hidden Swarm's reaction to Oryx's death, and their hope that he has passed his proverbial torch on to someone else and will hence live forever. There's also a tiny bit of information on Xivu's brood in here.
Speaking of Xivu, there's not a lot written about her but some of our best descriptions of what she's up to come from Immolant Pt. 1 & 2, Call of the Cryptolith, as well as armor and item lore cards from Season of the Hunt and Season of the Lost. Perhaps fittingly for a god of war, we know little about her thoughts but a fair deal about her actions.
The Book of Unmaking: The Shadows of Yor uncovering the truth of their eponymous Dredgen. Includes verses from another of the Books of Sorrow.
The Resonant Fury titan armor set, and warlock armor set, respectively, contain information on the Worm Gods and Rhulk's relationship with Savathun, which provide some additional context.
The fascinating thing about the Hive is that they're connected to so many characters that you can run into a decent amount of lore on them depending on who you're exploring: Looking into Mara Sov, Eris Morn, Toland The Shattered, the First Crota Fireteam, Osiris, Shin Malphur, Dredgen Yor, Riven, Ghalran and probably about a dozen characters I'm forgetting right now will turn up different perspectives on the hive and stories about them.

Sorry did i miss something with dead orbit this season? The only mention i saw was in Beneath an Endless Night, but in entry 8 lakshmi and hideo seem to make it make it pretty clear jalaal said no to being involved
Honestly, if you've read all the Beneath the Endless Night lore and kept up with the seasonal content, I don't think you have?
Arach Jalaal and Dead Orbit just kind of...disappear from the Splicer story after that lore tab where Lakshmi propose the idea to him then we never hear from Jalaal or Dead Orbit again.
The Conspirators entry itself is written fairly vaguely to where Jalaal doesn't actually give Lakshmi an answer and by the time he's mentioned again in GILDED KNIVES, Hideo's quickly says that Jalaal & DO aren't involved, which did feel like Hideo was hiding something from Saint in that moment but again, Jalaal had basically disappeared from the story at that point so...
Like, retroactively, we now clearly know that, yes, Jalaal and Dead Orbit were apparently involved to SOME degree in Lakshmi's conspiracy to overthrow the Vanguard but what exactly anyone except FWC did is anybody's guess.
In general, it's just another one of my minor nitpicks about the writing this season is that it seems it was, at times, too subtle for its own good.
It's a similar reason I have issues with this big theory about Osiris and Savathun. If it's true, the writing team has buried the lede too deeply which is making it hard to believe that something is actually amiss.

If you spent a lot of time in the Dreaming City like a nerd, it actually debunks yw being Earthborn. During the beginning of the reclaim the oracle engine mission during the second week of the curse, you get the line below if you've done it often:
"Even before this curse, I always thought our people were tragic. We are from humanity, but we are not of humanity. And when our friends and family and lovers die, it's always a gamble. You hold your breath, wondering, 'Will they be resurrected as a Guardian? And if they are, will they forget me?' I've seen some of the Corsairs recognize you as you pass."
She does also say during an earlier week:
"I see why the Queen favors you, cousin. You are courageous and relentless. To me, that is what it means to be Awoken. Earthborn or not, you're one of us."
I do think it's entirely possible that the Awoken Guardian could have actually been Earthborn, especially since we get rezzed so late and Ghost spends so long looking for us. But if the Corsairs recognize you, I think that pretty heavily implies a Reefborn or even Distributary born Awoken prior to dying. I think it is a little weird that you get rezzed in the Cosmodrome, but I think that it gives people a lot of agency to headcannon who their Guardian was before death. Were they a Reefborn looking for Dark Age tech or scouting? Were they a defector from Mara who died trying to help humanity? Maybe an Earthborn who wanted to try and salvage Golden Age tech. Who knows?
I think it also doesn't help that the Reefborn Awoken are notoriously inconsistent in how they define Earthborn and use Cousin. Sorry for the Ramble™️, I just got to thinking about your post talking about the Awoken Guardian getting rezzed.
No need to apologise for the ramble, I love me some Awoken rambles!
I think the main issue is how to define Reefborn and Earthborn. Do we only count those who were physically born in the Reef or on Earth? What about those that came from the Distributary? Everyone from the Distributary is Reefborn because that's where the Awoken showed up after returning from the Distributary. But they also clearly make a distinction between Awoken that left the Reef for Earth:
Thus the riven Awoken were riven again, into Reefborn and Earthborn.
Does this mean that everyone who left for Earth is immediately Earthborn, or only their children? Children would definitely be Earthborn, but what about parents that chose Earth over the Reef and who never lived in the Reef? They would certainly be Earthborn as well, which complicates things given the long lives they have.
And even worse, what about Guardians? They have to die and when they're rezed, they're different people. If a Reefborn dies on Earth and becomes a Guardian there, are they Reefborn or Earthborn? With Orin, Mara declared that Orin cannot be on trial for crimes she committed before being a Guardian because she's a new person, so technically, she would be considered Earthborn. But also her ties to Mara from before were clearly taken into account at least a little bit.
The old grimoire says this:
Today many Awoken live in the distant Reef, aloof and mysterious. But others returned to Earth, where their descendants now fight for the City.
Earthborn Awoken who venture out to the Reef, hoping to learn its secrets, find no special welcome from the reclusive Queen.
This specifies "descendants" and then talks about Earthborn. But if it only affects descendants, then Zavala would be Reefborn, and he is not viewed as such. But this might just be a thing for Guardians only, who become Earthborn if they're rezed on Earth.
Furthermore, we have Arach Jalaal who implies that he left the Distributary with Mara, but chose Earth because he thinks the duty of the Awoken is to continue what they were doing before becoming Awoken: going off on an Exodus ship to find new worlds for humanity. But Petra calls him Earthborn:
She speaks. "Earthborn. Did you mourn for her?"
He thinks she will know if he lies. "I respected her, yes, but I despised the way she seemed… entitled… to us all. I never regret choosing the path I did. I was Awoken to continue the search we started long ago. The quest for worlds worthy of our lives."
Zavala calls him "cousin" as well, so this seems to be an all-encompassing Awoken tradition, and not just for Reefborn. We also know this from Asher and Eris, who grew up together as kids in the City, but Eris calls him cousin, so they must've learned this custom in the City (and Eris is not even Awoken so she is doing it out of courtesy to Awoken traditions).
So how the hell do we categorise Earthborn and Reefborn? I have no clue! Awoken YW could be considered either. Reefborn, if we go by the voice lines you mentioned; Earthborn, if we go by place of rezing. But it's also possible that an Awoken Guardian could reject being Earthborn if they were simply just rezed there but feel more connected to the Reef.
This is further complicated by Crow, who is recognised as Reefborn purely through the specific hue of his skin and his mannerisms. It's complicated because Crow was specifically Uldren, who would have a much stronger connection to the Reef than some other Awoken, which explains the mannerisms that transferred over through his death. So we can't really tell if there are full physical differences between Reefborn and Earthborn and if Crow being recognised was simply because he was Uldren, so an Awoken would know his voice and immediately connect it with the Reef.
But there's a possibility that, if this is more than just him being Uldren, that the Awoken YW simply walks and talks and looks like Reefborn so the corsairs recognise them. But also as you said, there's a reference to them also being viewed as Earthborn.
I do agree that it's most likely inconsistent to give players freedom. Possibly also that there's some error in how these are defined so there's a lot of questions. I think seeing the Awoken YW as either Reefborn or Earthborn are both fine! There's definitely plausible evidence for both, especially if we look at the rez scene in the Cosmodrome as not entirely canonical. But then again, it also could be if the Awoken just stumbled upon the Cosmodrome ruins after arriving to Earth.
The Awoken are so messy and they're my fave.
