based on recent weeks:
maya heard her name coming from the veil
maya pulled data from the veil through the dead exos to make lakshmi-2 based on maya's own consciousness/"mental imprint"
lakshmi-2 seems to know something chioma doesn't (and gives general bad vibes).
so:
is lakshmi-2 somehow the maya who spoke to the real-maya through the veil? so she would be kind-of-maya + extra maya from the veil, as in, a maya who knew what the veil was and told real-maya its name, a veil-made being (part of the veil itself?)
with so many parallels to the witness, does this mean it is possible something similar happened with it? some witnessian spoke to the veil and it spoke back to them with their own voice? cue witnessian going a bit haywire and ending up convincing all of its people to become a single entity?
in this case, the witness would be a single entity made up of many mental imprints instead of just one because i suppose the witnessians weren't dead like the exos when it happened.
i still have no idea what the veil would even be in this case. my heart says winnower my beloved, my brain says probably not lol

honestly the big problem I had with Saladin is that it feels like every time he shows up all he has to contribute is "don't trust anyone ever, also let's go to war and kill them". like I can almost get it to a degree but it felt like he was getting almost as bad as lakshmi
Fair enough, though for me I didn't mind it too much because Saladin's life experiences were so drastically different from Lakshmi that it gave me more tolerance for him than what I had for her. Lakshmi survived the bombing of London, sure, but Saladin is a guardian that actively fought through the Dark Ages, multiple deaths, and then lost his entire company- the only people who shared his experiences- to SIVA. One experienced the horrors of war once and then spent the rest of her time bitching about it from the comfort of a walled city, the other had to deal with it for literal centuries on end and had the fate of many in his hands. Given that context, it makes sense for Saladin to be so distrustful- because he's had hundreds of years of betrayals racked up against him- and why he would want to strike first, before the other could get a hold over him. Additionally, while he was a tough old nut to crack, he did actually try to better himself and do what was best for the Last City, even if it went against what he thought was right. So I respect that quite a bit.
Also, what bothered me a lot about Lakshmi was that she had this oily way of speaking that capitalized on fearmongering, lies, and the public's ignorance in order to get what she wanted: power. While Saladin's stubbornness and mistrust was certainly an issue, it was mostly regulated to him, and he never stooped to such low methods to get what he wanted. Saladin has honour, while Lakshmi didn't

Wait a minute this whole thing with Lakshmi-2 also explains her interest in the Spontaneous Exo Reset Syndrome (SERS) which is something she's been investigating and even wrote papers on. I've mentioned this before, but Lakshmi was almost uniquely interested in this phenomenon. She's been shown as researching this all the way back from Forsaken:
Lakshmi-2 and Hari-5. "Do cognitive insight excursions cause spontaneous Exo reset syndrome? A case study." Unpublished archive material, personal collection.
SERS is basically a very rare condition that some Exos get and it consists of the Exo spontaneously resetting themselves and wiping their previous life entirely. Exos who go through this apparently change their entire personality and identity. It appears that it can only happen to non-Lightbearers and Lightbearers that lost their Ghost.
Her entry from the raid armour in Beyond Light is dedicated to this in-depth. I never understood why she was interested in that; I figured it might've just been scientific curiousity. The way she spoke of it seemed personal, but also she's an exo. Of course any Exo-specific problem might feel personal to Exos.
However. Reading this with the new information is a whole other can of worms. I now believe that she was investigating this because she thought it happened to her. The lore tab I linked shows Lakshmi-2 running a search on Exo names and name changes. She eventually expands the search until it gives her only information about the SERS. And her first reaction?
After only a few minutes of reading, she knew: it had happened before.
It had happened before. Meaning, she's not the only one. And it makes sense now! The new reveal tells us that Lakshmi was one of the Exos aboard Exodus Indigo that arrived on Neomuna. She got in contact with the Veil which wiped her, causing brain death. After, Maya picked up the Exos that suffered this condition and used the Veil to "project a mental imprint" into an Exo who previously had another identity. Lakshmi-2 was someone else, got wiped by the Veil and then Maya inserted a piece of herself into that Exo. That's why Lakshmi has some of Maya's memories, but not all. She's not a perfect copy of Maya and she was still someone else before Maya did this.
Lakshmi-2 probably had some weird experiences that led her to believe that she's been through SERS; that she had one personality and life first, got reset, and then received another. And technically? She is not wrong. Lakshmi's emotions about this read a lot more personal now:
These were Exos that had seemingly rebooted themselves; they had wiped away their own identities and taken a new number. Or had someone else somehow done it for them? Could there be records of some of them outside the archive? Could one or two still be alive? Lakshmi-2 closed her eyes, slowed her breathing, and focused on the dichotomy of her emotions. What she'd discovered felt momentous, but she knew her colleagues would treat it as a curiosity. People often discounted Exos. It was if there were a line between frame and flesh and blood. The idea offended Lakshmi-2, but at the same time, she knew Exos were different enough from normal Humans. The existence of Exos who reset themselves—for whatever reason—proved that.
If any of her experiences led her to investigate this, it means that she was aware that there was something weird with her. That something had happened to her. And it did! We now know it did. This is interesting for the implications of what Maya did. Maybe it's just a neat little detail, maybe it's something that might help us find any other potential copies Maya made of herself. Are there more like her out there? The examples that Lakshmi noted during her research don't entirely fit, but here they are:
Historical Basis for Spontaneous Reset Syndrome —Heyka-3/4: Notorious Dark Ages Warlord. Post-reset, became a lone raider. —Vander-2/3: Rescued from the Great Disaster because reset incapacitated him. Served as City guard post-reset. Ghost destroyed on Luna. (Pre- or post-reset? Do Ghosts protect Exo Guardians from spontaneous reset?) —Lilakee-5/6/7: Curious case. Known sufferer of severe DER-related nightmares and outbursts. Commandeered a jumpship and vanished. —Selass-7/8: Technician sent to data mine Titan settlements. Reset occurred in return transit. Post-reset, remained research technician assisting Cryptarchs.
But who knows. Maybe there's more.
