In the midst of an unseasonal California heat wave last late spring, Nathaniel DeNicola, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, had an unusual case on his hands: A patient who had been carrying a perfectly healthy pregnancy for 32 weeks was going into early labor. It didn’t make sense; nevertheless, the baby was coming. The patient’s waters had broken, the baby’s heartbeat was dropping fast, and the child was in the breech position. The mother had an emergency C-section. After spending a couple of weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit, the baby was allowed to go home.
After the scramble to deliver the baby, DeNicola searched for reasons that might explain the premature arrival. Sometimes there are obvious causes for the early rupturing of membranes, like a chlamydia infection or a condition called cervical insufficiency, in which the cervix starts to dilate on its own. But those explanations didn’t fit DeNicola’s patient. Struggling, he settled on a different explanation: the searing heat. “I can’t prove that that was because of extreme heat; it’s very tough to assign that,” he says. But from his research, he knew that heat can trigger preterm births. And in his 12 years as a clinician, he has often seen more obstetric emergency visits during heatwaves.
Doctors have known for some time that certain groups of people, like the elderly and children, are particularly vulnerable to heatwaves. But in recent years, a new population has come into focus: pregnant people and their unborn babies. As the world warms up, there is a growing corpus of evidence that the heat is interfering with pregnancy, perturbing the delicate fetus in the womb, with the potential for serious complications.
And it’s plenty hot now. July 3 was the hottest day ever recorded globally. July was declared the hottest month on record. California’s Death Valley recently reached 128 degrees Fahrenheit—just two degrees short of a record for the entire planet. In Phoenix, Arizona, the daytime temperature hasn’t dipped below 110 degrees Fahrenheit in almost a month. In parts of the world, such as Iran, the heat index is teetering toward the threshold of what the human body can tolerate. Swathes of Europe are on fire.
Understanding the effect of extreme heat on pregnancies will require a major shift. Due to ethical concerns, pregnant people have typically been excluded from studies of the effects of heat on physiology. (A recent paper drily pointed out that far more research has been done on the effects of heat stress on livestock “due to its economic importance.”) It means that much of what we know comes from animal studies.
So far, there are many theories, but not many firm conclusions. Animal studies have shown that heat can provoke an increase in the secretion of oxytocin, a key hormone involved in labor, which may also explain the phenomenon in humans. It could be that extreme heat triggers the premature rupture of membranes, leading to a too-early birth. Or it could be that heat strain causes the release of inflammatory proteins, prompting preterm labor. Maybe it’s dehydration caused by the heat, causing the release of prostaglandins, lipids that will trigger contractions, and these contractions can be so intense that the body goes into early labor.
In pregnant people, we know that the body alters the way it regulates its temperature to accommodate for increased body size and the metabolic toil required to grow a baby. This, in turn, limits the body’s capacity to dissipate heat. So when it’s super hot, a pregnant person is perhaps less equipped to deal with the heat. Another theory is that when a pregnant person is experiencing heat stress, the body releases heat-shock proteins, which could trigger physiological reactions that are harmful to the baby and its bearer.
A few papers have tried to pinpoint how heat affects the development of human babies, notably a 2022 study that followed 92 pregnant farmers working in The Gambia in West Africa. Led by Ana Bonell, a research fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the team wanted to figure out how doing agricultural labor out in the heat was affecting their pregnancies. Bonell knew that heat stress can trigger the release of cortisol, which could hinder blood flow to the placenta. So her team decided to measure stress, both on the mother and the fetus. Alarmingly, they saw that for every 1 degree Celsius increase, there was a 17 percent increase in fetal stress—defined as abnormally high heart rate or slower blood flow through the umbilical cord. Overall, they concluded that heat strain on the mother translated into strain on the fetus.
Bonell felt it was important to be doing the research in a region likely to face some of the worst tolls of a heating world, where the typical escapes—say, retreating to an air-conditioned building—aren’t available to all. “There’s a massive inequality and climate justice agenda that goes with any research around climate change,” she says. “West Africa is one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It just felt right, really.”
Strain on the fetus can have serious consequences. Multiple studies have found that even small increases in ambient temperature can increase the risk of preterm birth: A study from California found that for every 5.6 degrees Celsius increase in ambient temperature exposure, the risk of a preterm birth increased by 8.6 percent. Another analysis also found that the risk of preterm birth increased as temperatures went up.
Several studies have also found significant links between heat exposure and low birth weight. A 2022 study conducted in Massachusetts found that higher ambient temperature resulted in smaller babies. One reason why, the paper proposes, is that perhaps the induced heat-shock proteins mess up normal protein synthesis, which may wreak havoc with the development of the fetus’s organs.
For some babies, the heat can prove fatal. Another recent analysis led by Bonell reviewed the link between heat exposure and stillbirths: One study from Western Australia found that the risk of stillbirth increased by 41 percent if the mother was exposed to moderate heat stress—around 32 degrees Celsius—in the last two weeks of pregnancy.
And hot weather may affect a baby’s development in other ways: A 2021 analysis found a higher incidence of anomalies, such as cardiac defects, spina bifida, or cleft lip, at higher temperatures. A 2019 study took existing research that linked heat exposure to congenital heart defects and extrapolated how many such cases we can expect in the coming years: The authors estimated that over an 11-year period, an additional 7,000 babies will be born with congenital heart defects in the eight US states they studied. According to Bonell, there’s also early evidence from animals that heat stress may be triggering epigenetic changes linked to long-term adult chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
And in the United States, any potential harm to a fetus brings with it other concerns. Pregnant people, more than ever in a post-Roe world, are at risk of criminalization for behavior that may harm the fetus, particularly in states that recognize fetal personhood, which grants legal rights to a fetus from conception. “You might live in a state that criminalizes your adverse birth outcome because you took a walk when it was hot, or you were working outdoors when the temperatures were too high,” says Adelle Dora Monteblanco, an assistant professor of public health at Pacific University in Oregon.
As the research linking extreme heat to pregnancy complications piles up, public health bodies, including the World Health Organization and UNICEF, have started to take notice and include pregnant people and their unborn babies in warnings during extreme heat—although some, like the United Kingdom, are still leaving pregnant people out. While including pregnant people in public health messaging is important, doctors also need to do more to keep patients fully informed on how to stay safe. “We know enough to act,” says DeNicola. “While we don’t have perfect solutions, we do have counseling we can give.” He knows to tell his patients to drink more water, and try to access any kind of cooling, if they have the means. If air-conditioning isn’t an option at home, people should look for cooling centers, or shopping malls, movie theaters, or libraries.
Research has shown that more targeted advice is still a necessity. A 2022 paper concluded that current guidance for pregnant people with regard to heat exposure is “sparse, inconsistent, and not evidence based.” Big questions remain, like at what stage in the pregnancy is the mother and fetus most at risk, or at what temperature conditions shift from risky to dangerous.
Yet there are limits to simply giving out advice. As the world heats up, pregnant people and their babies will continue to be vulnerable to these risks—particularly people from low-income households and people of color. Bonell points out that what people really need is practical help or the tools to help themselves. “You need some other solutions that aren’t just about education,” she says.

in your post about the 2015 draft i really take issue with you saying babcock loved auston and mitch was his whipping boy. firstly if anything babcock’s whipping boy was nylander, who he allegedly openly disliked. secondly babcock had a lot of issues with auston and apparently treated him quite poorly, including something unknown that was so bad that babcock flew to auston’s house in arizona to try and make amends with him. he certainly did not love auston or the way auston played hockey.
also no offense but describing mitch as “the skinny pretty unmanly one” (???? 6’0 180lbs) and saying that’s why he got bad press during contract negotiations is ridiculous. he got bad press during those negotiations because his camp was being shitty! the marner camp was putting out articles about dubas being stingy, threatening that mitch would go play in zurich, demanding an identical contract to auston’s, making it a condition that mitch would share auston’s alternate captaincy, etc. people did not like that and i can’t blame them. but despite the sourness now it’s also absolutely false to say that people have been shitting on mitch since he was drafted - he was beloved on the knights and leafs fans back then were nothing but excited for him to join the team. most fans and media weren’t upset about his weight either - johnny gaudreau, patrick kane, cam atkinson, mats zuccarello etc are all smaller and were already established stars/top line players when mitch came into the league. it truly was not something mentioned frequently by anyone except hockey tumblr.
sorry for the lengthy and perhaps rude or confrontational message but hockey fans on tumblr and twitter have been treating mitch like a sweet bumbling overgrown kid who can’t control anything that happens around him since he became a leaf. often that’s involved comparing him to auston in ways that are honestly kind of weird and racist (mitch is so soft and unmanly and small while auston is so unfriendly and masculine and big and latino!!!) and it’s supremely frustrating to see that that’s still the case
I do want to thank you for this message -- I wasn’t personally there for most of this and got a lot of this information secondhand, although I read a lot of articles I could from the time that this was happening in order to clear up some of my claims. Willy being Babcock’s most hated sounds a lot more accurate; I admit that I characterized a lot of the drama more as a story than as perfect journalism, and adding him in would have taken another thousand words.
It’s also worth noting that Nylander was, of the core three, the real whipping boy, up until a few years ago when everyone suddenly realized/decided that he was the only one who could score in the playoffs, and then did a total pivot onto Mitch. (Not sure if this was spurred by one of the various playoff meltdowns or the contract negotiations, given that both of them had complicated and difficult ones.) Nylander has certainly experienced a lot of xenophobia for his Swedishness as well as anger at his nonchalance; Don Cherry used to hate him as well. Unlike Marner, though, he didn’t outwardly react to any of it -- both fueling the narrative of him as “uncaring” and of Marner as “sensitive.”
There is actually some report of people being skeptical of Mitch’s ability translating to the NHL because of his size: this link expresses some concerns (also worth noting he only cracked 180 pounds this year; he was hovering 170 for a great deal of the time before that, and given that he’s a few inches taller than the likes of Gaudreau and Kane, he is much less sturdy-looking.)
When it came to Auston, that fetishization of his race and perceived hypermasculinity is part of the big problem of the perception of the main Leafs’ core, although definitely looking back on my post I admit the line blurs on him specifically as to what I am stating *I* believe versus what the narrative around him was/is, and I apologize for that. A lot of hype around him was being linked to his ~unusual~ background at the time, and especially because he’s a lot more reserved and well-media-trained than Marner or Nylander (as well as being a better hockey player) he was kind of used as a way to demean them, which dehumanizes him in the process. Across hockey media and fandom I do tend to see this uncomfortable mischaracterization of him as dominating, rude, potentially even possessive (especially re Mitch in fandom -- considering Mitch is lily-white, the man of colour dominating his younger-looking smaller white compatriot is uh. Not a good dynamic to consider) when this is the man who cried during an interview because of how much he loves his mom!
Finally, I want to argue that while, yes, the difficulty of the contract negotiation in and of itself was a big part of the reason Mitch is so widely disliked in Leafland, part of the perception of him as soft (and other vaguely homophobic things) likely exacerbated the feelings resulting from it, or at least the two are inseparable in hindsight. Marner’s camp was uppity and the man himself stumbled over words and reacted harshly; most people don’t really separate the words of the agency from the words of the player, and combined those two add to create a picture of “sensitive,” “high-maintenance,” and even “immature.”

What’s your take on people being up in arms about Bridgerton’s treatment of season 2 and by extension Simone Ashley. Do you think fans are on to something or are fans doing too much?
I think a bit of both; and I also think that the way we see promo roll out for season 3 will affect my perception of it. The reality is that s1 promo is difficult to compare to s2, because s1 was not a big returning hit. So s2 will be need to be compared to s3.
Do I think I would've liked to have seen more promo with Simone? Of course. Do I think that this is much, much more complicated than many people realize and that there are multiple entities at work with promo issues? Netflix (somewhat), production (less so), and Simone's team (quite a bit) included? Yes. Do I think people totally glossed over the solo shoots that Simone got because in reality they didn't want to see Simone, they wanted to see Simone AND JB? Yeah.
But I don't think there's some grand evil scheme at hand, I think that there is racism throughout the industry and while Bridgerton's production is no doubt affected by that, I don't know that it's... this elaborate scheme to prevent Simone from doing well or ensure that Kate doesn't ~steal focus~. Tbh, I think a lot of this comes down to the show being run by people who aren't all that talented, and are part of a machine that has always had some very weird relationships with gender, sexuality, race, and colorism. As much as people want to act like Shonda Rhimes being a highly successful Black woman means that her products are this post-racial utopia, that just isn't the case, and you can go back to... Grey's Anatomy, honestly. Shonda's works do often feature interracial couples (yay!) but they often feature interracial couples with at least one white person, often a white woman (see: Jackson and April, Addison and Sam, Addison and Jake, Callie and Arizona, Simon and Daphne). Often, when woman of color are given center stage in a Shondaland production, they are lightskinned--see Olivia Pope, Maggie Pierce, compared to how sidelined Stephanie Edwards on Grey's Anatomy was, to the point that she was publicly humiliated by her boyfriend leaving her for a white woman.... when that white woman was at the altar. Of course, there are exceptions, but this is something Shondaland has been critiqued on for quite a while.
At the same time, I think that a lot of Kathony fans want to pick a struggle and latch on to it hard and make their fandom identity being like... downtrodden. And lied to. Like, do I think that Kate's backstory and inner life should have been further developed? Yes. Do I think that Simone was deliberately lured into the role and bait and switched? Probably not. I wish they hadn't cut the scenes she apparently read from, for sure, but I also don't think it's unusual for scenes to be cut, especially when they're flashback scenes in general. I think other scenes could've been cut instead... But tbh, I don't think Kate flashback scenes would've been very good.
Which is something that I think people need to accept with this show. It's like. Not good. Nobody is making deliberate decisions to fuck shit up, they just kind of don't write well. I don't think the Polin season is suddenly going to uplift Penelope with Good Content. The fact that the summary mentions Colin coming back from his travels with "a new swagger", which is something they already tried to sell in s2 and nobody bought it--they're like. Not great.
And it's not the end of the world. Simone will quite possibly dip after season 4, should they be renewed beyond that. I don't think she's crying into her pillow about this. I'm hoping she's looking for other, eye-catching projects. The reality is that this was a good profile boost for her. I don't think the show had it out for her or JB by not campaigning for them with the Emmys, because there was frankly little to no chance of them being nominated either way.
The reality is that while I do think Simone has not been given the full shine she deserves, I also think that people are mostly just mad that the show didn't give them what they wanted and are railing against that, using Simone to give themselves a righteous cause. Some people genuinely care, of course, and make nuanced and rational arguments, but a lot of it is putting a noble label on fandom wank.
And at this point, I don't think it changes shit. The show is renewed through season 4. Neither of the next seasons will be giving those fans what they want. Simone is not going to have her profile raised in them. Her centerpiece season is done. So idk, if you're an actual fan of her I'd suggest watching her scenes by themselves and otherwise focusing on what comes next for her.

Hello there!! I hope your day is going well. I hope this isn’t overstepping any boundaries, and I genuinely apologize if it is, but I’m a person with Yaqui heritage really really wanting to reconnect, although I’m not entirely sure if I have a right to it. Though it was at first a family story that I took with a grain of salt, but further digging into family history shows that a LOT adds up (i.e. my ancestors are from Sonora, ended up in southern Arizona for a time, and family records I’ve tracked down online all say that almost my ancestors on my grandma’s side were Yaqui (and the ones who aren’t are still almost all recorded to have belonged to other Indigenous Mexican tribes.)
I do recognize that you’re only one person and cannot be a mouthpiece for every Yaqui, and I absolutely intend on contacting family members who may have more insight prior to actually contacting the tribe, but at the same time, I don’t want to get too invested in reconnecting if it isn’t my place to do so. Since you’re reconnected/reconnecting yourself, I thought maybe you might have some knowledge on whether or not one needs to have an direct(?) ancestor that was connected/enrolled/etc, and if this ancestor needs to go back only a certain amount of time before you kinda start to push it, as it were. Any insight you have on reconnection as a Yaqui in general would be unbelievably helpful, truly. Thank you so much in advance for your time, and please take care and stay safe out there.
Hi! thanks for reaching out :)
definitely like you said i am one person, but ill just go off of my experience, as one should do
So how i see it, and a lot of the Yaqui and rest of indian country agree, is basically claiming your heritage and tribe is less about blood and more about connecting and the community.
It can be complicated especially for those like the black slaves owned by some native tribes being able to claim their tribe (i believe they have the right to). This would be a case where there is no blood relation, but either cultural or historical relation. If they give back to the community, if they connect, if they learn the language, and everything that points to them BEING part of that tribe, than i say they are.
its not about words and titles and blood, its about being.
There are tribes that have adopted non natives and those non natives are able to claim that tribe. every situation is different.
but what i always tell people is: ignore blood, ignore everything and ask yourself why you would want to claim being native or claim being Yaqui. And how do you feel when you dont claim it? Does it feel no different either way or does it feel like youre lying to people?
I didnt grow up with our Yaqui culture (itom Hiak Lutu'uria). I grew up white. i look white. I have that white privilege and i dont deny it and i dont want it ignored bc its important for me to understand where i fit in society and different communities. and i dont want people to think im trying to pretend im not white or have that privilege. bc im not. I identify as Italian and Yaqui, White and Native, or just mixed. though i feel more comfortable saying Yaqui then native.
For me what is most important is connection and remembering people who came before me. And the fact that they assimilated. i struggled with identity growing up. Its not about claiming native, but its about giving back to the community and learning our Yaqui language (itom Hiak Nooki) and connecting with people.
I feel like an outsider and thats okay. because i am, even if the community accepts me which they do. You have to accept that you might have one foot in and one foot out but that doesnt make you less, its just a reality. you just have to figure where your place in the community is. go off of your experiences
I do what i can and i get involved when I can, and it never feels like enough. But it is. Because the alternative is not doing anything. not trying.
And when it comes to heritage, you are able to acknowledge it and give back to the community and be involved without claiming it. its hard to explain, but basically what i tell people is (especially if white) to focus on their "white" cultures first. Italian, irish, norwegian, etc.
because a lot of white people see those as a default. As "just' white. And then they see they are "part poc" and that seems like the only thing thats worth connecting.
but every culture has music and food and history and language to explore. and when you find love and pride in that, then sometimes people come to the conclusion that claiming native isnt right for them. that acknowledging it is enough.
its hard to explain the difference between claiming and simply acknowledging, but for me, claiming is work. its what reconnecting is. its actively BEING. its learning the language, history, talking with people but above all knowing that you are Yaqui. it is forefront, it is who you are, and its a feeling youll know if you have it.
otherwise theres nothing wrong with acknowledging your ancestors struggles, and being proud of your heritage and even supporting the tribe.
Im proud of being Yaqui bc of the people, the language is beautiful, the history is powerful. As i am with being Italian and the music and language and food. I have always loved being Italian even though i didnt grow up with the culture.
So before reconnecting sit down with yourself and think about what reconnecting means to you. why is it important? and is it effort youre willing to put in- not as forceful effort, but natural effort. You shouldnt be pushing yourself to reconnect, it shouldnt be a checklist or chore. it should just be something that comes naturally. like, a no brainer effort if that makes sense
In all, you are allowed to reconnect and youre allowed to just acknowledge. its up to you to figure out who you are in that regard. are you Yaqui or do you have Yaqui heritage
its ok to feel outside even when youre reconnecting. be yourself. for example, because of the history, Yaqui religion is both spiritual and catholic. i dont force myself to try and believe anything i dont already believe. because i dont need to do that.
I could go on and on but dm me if you want! im always down to talk. sorry this is so long and if i forgot anything or didnt answer something

Pluto’s Statehood ~ 05 Apr 2024
Pluto’s Statehood ~ 05 Apr 2024, Philip Sedgwick
On Friday 29 March 2024, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs signed into law a bill that Pluto is the Official State Planet of the Great State of Arizona. This action was caused (inspired?) by the fact that Clyde Tombaugh “discovered” Pluto at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, on 18 February 1930. What’s your state, territory, province, commonwealth or feudal lord dominion done for you lately?
Tumblr media
As far as states go, only California (Eris, Makemake, Gonggong, Sedna) and Hawaii (Haumea) could pass similar legislation. As far as countries go, who knows where the classical planets were discovered. Greece, what is now Saudi Arabia? The United Kingdom could fairly claim Uranus, though it not given proper due during the discovery process. Neptune presents a more complicated problem. While discovered in Germany, it discovery position was calculated by mathematicians from France and England... perhaps this marks the start of the United Planetary Nations.
Back to Arizona... news sources made a huge point of splashing their content pages with the allegation that Pluto is not a planet. So did politicians opposing the bill. Actually, for them, it was not so much about Pluto’s planetary status as it was the idea that legislators from the other party advanced the bill. Pluto’s planetary status is political as well. Back a few decades ago, a semantical and fiercely political battle occurred during the meeting of the members of the International Astronomical Union over what makes a planet a planet. The concluding definition is complicated, semantically flawed, and ultimately is as unclear as the River Styx is dark. Nowadays, there are several movements to restore Pluto’s pristine planetary status. Cheers to that.
Anyone who has ever had a Pluto transit, can confirm Pluto is a planet. Who else but Pluto can take the highest flying personality and knock that person to their knees for an in-depth look at the underworld, the machinations of the psyche, and the ultimate needs of the soul?
Will Pluto’s statehood status mean anything to those enduring one of his transiting passages that seem to last for ever? “I have nothing to do with the affairs of state,” Pluto may reply, “it’s all about the affairs of the soul. Should soulful individuals conduct themselves in such a way that states benefit, then the world may be on its way to more humanistic possibilities. After all, I currently occupy Aquarius.” Then he breaks into renditions of songs from the musical “Hair.”
Of course, those being “practical” and uber-cautious with Pluto point out that in the upcoming presidential election in the United States - an event that dramatically impacts all states and countries in that “everything is connected” way, Pluto transits the last minutes of Capricorn. Will this permit greed, economic influence and income disparity to inflame the globe? It could.
However, consider that the other big planetary players all transit Pluto through positive and benefic ways over the course of the next years.
As June begins, Jupiter in Gemini trines Pluto in Aquarius. That should be good for truth, justice and a kinder way of thinking and being. Of course snicker fans of Saturn, every solution starts from a mess. Jupiter winks at Pluto and retorts, “No. Good things come from the realization of necessity.” The benefic planet then whips out his golden ephemeris and points to July of 2025. “Check this out,” he bellows, “Saturn is in Aries about to go retrograde, but so what? He’s sextile Pluto. Not only that, Uranus is in Gemini, close enough in orb to be considered a trine. Not only that, Neptune bolts through the early degrees of Aries, more or less conjunct Saturn, sextile to Pluto. If that won’t bring visions and dreams to reality, by Jove, I’m not Jove.”
Sure say proponents of safe prognostication, “All those gaseous planets retrograde as they do and it takes time for the effects they seek to render to come into being.” Okay, fine. As April 2026 begins, Saturn sextiles Pluto from his foothold in Aries. Come July 2026, Neptune again sextiles Pluto, also from Aries, and at the same time Uranus repeats a trine to Pluto. Sure Neptune sextile Pluto repeats in June 2027 and this occurrence again with the Uranus in Gemini two-step trine to Pluto in Aquarius.
This goes on a while. Through May 2028 Uranus continues the parade with yet another trine to Pluto. The entire Neptune to Pluto thing goes on well into 2031.
So what are you going to do to make good from the impelling influences setting up years of possibility and promise ahead?
Rumor is that Jupiter and Uranus are less than three weeks from lining up in a conjunction in Taurus. Sure, there’s a materialism with this that may not become entirely evident until Pluto does his last ding into Capricorn. There’s also innovation, application of insight, manifestation of necessities promised by Jupiter and realized by Uranus. Will these commodities produce overnight product development and consciousness shifts? Not likely. Those who are overnight successes typically have done heaps of Saturn work for what seems like eons out of sight to prepare for the big events to come... and also to please Pluto’s fondness for invisibility.
Could the solar system feel flat and uninspired after the touted Jupiter to Uranus transit? Sure. Could things feel unsettled after next week’s highly promoted Solar Eclipse? Most certainly. But the eclipse intends to stir and shake the fabric of self into realization of what clearly means the most to the soul. With that, the stirring settles and focus can be restored to what matters most and that can become the focal point on everyone’s distant horizon.
Yes, and down the road over the next few months, Jupiter and Saturn aspect the Great Attractor, a plethora of black holes and more galactic goodies than jelly beans recently placed in Easter baskets. It’s not going to feel flat... in fact, the curvature of space caused by galactic entities might bring everyone to the correct position just around the bend.
It’s Aries season, despite Mercury retrograde. Honor Pluto’s new statehood. He dares you. On your mark, get set...

What You Need to Know About the Science of Fresh Green Vegetables
Tumblr media
The availability of fresh leafy greens at all times of the year is truly amazing, even if it might not appear that extraordinary now.
If you reside anyplace east of these two states, the leafy greens on your plate have likely traveled a long distance to get there, as more than 90% of the lettuce grown in the United States is produced in California and Arizona.
So how come they appear to have just been plucked from a neighboring garden this morning? The quick answer is collaboration and the appropriate technology, also known as EMAP, or equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging.
What is EMAP?
Technology known as equilibrium modified environment packaging slows respiration and increases the shelf life of fresh goods. Fresh fruits and vegetables continue to "breathe" or respire after they have been picked, unlike the majority of food items. Produce uses oxygen in this process, which also results in the production of carbon dioxide and water vapor.
The main goal of EMAP is to preserve packaged goods' freshness for as long as possible without compromising their quality in terms of flavor, texture, or appearance.
The packaging environment should generally have less oxygen, typically less than 5%, and more carbon dioxide, often about 5-15%, with nitrogen making up the remainder of the atmosphere.
Why Is It Necessary?
It's more complicated than it seems. The procedure exchanges "air" that is made up of 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen in order to meet and maintain control of the gas mixture in the package. Anaerobic respiration happens when there is not enough oxygen present in the packing atmosphere. This process results in the degradation of the substance and produces unpleasant tastes and odors. However, excessive carbon dioxide can harm some items. Nitrogen has no impact on the food product by itself.
When the correct packaging material is utilized and leaks are securely sealed, EMAP performs at its best. Particularly for leafy greens, permeability and breathability are crucial packaging characteristics. Therefore, when you order fresh vegetables online you must check the quality.
If the items are packaged airtight, oxygen would quickly be exhausted and unfavorable anaerobic conditions may arise. The changed environment will escape if the material is too porous, and no advantage will result.
By checking, regulating, and keeping an eye on the environment inside the package, the goal is to come as close as possible to the targeted range. Proper EMAP can increase shelf life by up to 100%.
What are the Other Factors You Need to Look for While Ordering Fresh Cut Vegetables?
Leafy greens and other fresh product packagers might be interested in Oxybeam, a brand-new non-destructive gas analyzer that employs laser technology to figure out how much oxygen is still present in packed food. Leak-Master Pro 2 is also regarded by the business as being a crucial part of quality control. The CO2 technology underlies the package leak detector.
Packaging also plays a role in the technology's viability. Businesses provide films that are acceptable for both items that need gas flushing and ones that don't.
Research has been done to better understand the ideal head space for leafy greens and how quickly certain leafy greens respire.
Leafy greens require assistance to get the ideal headspace since they breathe more slowly than other produce. This requires a delicate balancing act between the active gas cleansing and optimum package permeability.
Natural respiration, for instance, causes the leaves of dark leafy greens like spinach to become yellow, which results in food waste. Too much oxygen can cause the leaves of light-colored lettuces like iceberg and Romaine to become pink.
What we do is combine the proper film permeability with a gas flush. And it will enable us to immediately boost the carbon dioxide while decreasing the oxygen to prevent pinking and yellowing.
The gas flush is still just the natural respiratory gasses that we use, oxygen and carbon dioxide, but it gets the head space to those optimal levels very quickly."
Together, the group assesses every aspect, including line speed, sealing temperature requirements, and product respiration rates. Having the appropriate testing equipment on hand is helpful.
Prior to sealing, it also applies the pre-mixed gas required to change the atmosphere within the container.
Retailers can benefit from tray sealing technology, especially given the present economic situation. Modified environment packaging is made possible by top seal packaging, which is safe for food and tamper-evident. Last but not least, when you buy chopped vegetables online, you should focus on the packaging and also some crucial pointers.

Drywall Alternatives: Pros and Cons of Popular Choices
Tumblr media
A drywall alternative is any material that can be used instead of traditional drywall, which is a type of wall and ceiling panel made of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two layers of paper. Drywall is a common building material used in residential and commercial construction because it is relatively inexpensive, easy to install, and fire-resistant. However, there are situations where drywall may not be the best choice, such as in areas with high moisture or humidity, or where a different aesthetic is desired. In those cases, a drywall alternative can be used. Some examples of drywall alternatives include wood paneling, plywood, cement board, metal panels, fabric panels, and plaster. The choice of which material to use will depend on factors such as budget, durability, aesthetics, and ease of installation.
11 Different Drywall Alternatives
1. Wood Planks
Tumblr media
Wood Plank Wood planks are an age-old drywall alternative, and certainly stood well the test of prolonged duration. It gives an elegant and rustic feel to the home without much bothering for maintenance issues as against traditional drywall. Pros - There is no need to maintain it apart from keeping them dry, once the plank has been hung, especially if planks are sealed with a light lacquer finish that can be easily wiped to remove the marker. - Gives the flexibility of a lot of variety due to the different availability of woods and finishes. - It is a cost-effective drywall alternative, especially suited to country-style homes. - Wood planks covered from floor to ceiling can pull off a cabin aesthetic easily. - Easy to install. - Washable. - Suitable for high moisture areas. Cons - Honestly, it is out of style in the 1990s. - Wood plank walls won’t be the best fit unless the bottom half is covered and protective chair rails are installed. Tumblr media

Usually, this style of décor is found in dry states(desert areas) like Arizona and Rajasthan possessing the influence of Mexican-style adobe architecture. Pros - Simpler to use than traditional drywall as it doesn’t require as many skills or tools as hanging traditional drywall does. - Lighter - Cost-effective Cons - Although it is not difficult practically it can take up the whole day to get the job done. So, it is proven to be the most laborious and time-consuming drywall alternative. - Less durable 3. Lath & Plaster
Tumblr media
Lath and Plaster Lath is a narrow strip of wood installed horizontally between studs or ceiling joists. Lath & Plaster consists of plastering the lath. Wood, hand-split timber, newer rock, or metal can be used as lath. Pros - Gives an elegant aesthetic due to its non-flat walls or curvy surface nature in the corner of the room, which isn’t possible in other methods except stucco. - Plaster incorporating the horsehair gives a stronger and more visible texture to the surface. Cons - Can look great by adding some texture to the wall but it is out of favor due to advancements in plasterboard and drywall. 4. Plywood and Sheet Wood
Tumblr media

Moreover, the arrangement of room furniture, light in the room, etc governs its aesthetic. Pros - Attractive - Strong - Durable - Fire-resistant Cons - Tougher to decorate the exposed concrete wall frequently. - Holds dirt and water. - Possess minimal insulation properties. 8. Cement Board

That's on you Coach
What’s worse than an uninspiring game plan? Being too foolish or stubborn to change course when you see it’s not working. On Sunday in Minneapolis, Coach Matt LaFleur had numerous blinking light alerts that their plans were not getting it done. Mostly, they ignored those warnings.
Game plan changed too little, too late
Dec 1, 2019; Glendale, AZ, USA; Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Barry against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
Although they slowed the bleeding in the second half, MLF and his assistants didn’t do enough in-game modifications to salvage a winnable game. That’s on Le Fleur, and to some extent Joe Barry and Adam Stenavich. It’s hard to tell what exactly the offensive game plan was, but even the untrained eye would call it disjointed. Except for the second drive of the second half that got the Packers only score, the offense felt out of synch.  There were clearly not enough touches for their two best offensive playmakers, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. The lack of commitment to the run game provokes the age old question, is that on the Coach or the QB who’d rather throw it?
As for the defense, anyone who watched Justin Jefferson slice the Packers up on the opening drive could see something was not right. Maybe if it were better executed a zone defense could have worked. But when you’ve paid a cover corner like Jaire Alexander, doesn’t assigning him to lock down Jefferson just make more sense?
Not as simple as man-to-man coverage
Yes, having one guy play man coverage complicates things for the other 10 players. What wasn’t complicated was Jefferson moon-walking through the Packers zone defense.
My point, the Packers had nothing to lose my trying man-to-man coverage, yet they stuck with the zone and Jefferson put a 158 yards and 2 TD’s on them by halftime. Presumably the changes they made in the second half helped slow him down. But with a 17-point lead the Vikings also altered their approach to drain the clock.
Offense now Davante-less

In fairness, most football observers expected a bumpy adjustment to the loss of a proven star like Davante Adams. It’s likely we’ll see an offense that will sometimes look disjointed for many weeks to come.  Still, I expected Coach Matt LeFleur and Aaron Rodgers to be  highly aware of a need to be flexible to doing things differently. Hopefully we’ll see that flexibility in the coming weeks.
There’s a lot to like about Coach Le Fleur. 39-regular season wins in his first three years doesn’t happen by accident or with a coach who doesn’t know what he’s doing. Certainly it helps having a proven top flight QB like Rodgers, but that alone doesn’t win a team 39-games.
As much credit as Le Fleur gets for stellar regular seasons, his season openers and playoff performances have been pretty bad. One way to address those performances would be by making in-game corrections in real time to shift away from plans when they’re not working.

Why Would You Quit Wearing Birkenstocks
Previously, I actually have Birkenstock UK pointed out a space between initially when i first wore Birkenstocks and when I rekindled my enjoy with these excellent shoes. A colleague of mine inquired, "why did you stop putting on Birkenstocks?" Good question.
I got my very first couple of Birkenstock Kay in the early 90s and people shoes survived me a several years. Some day these folks were beyond restoration. It was actually so hard for me to component with those Birks, i questioned my mom to correctly dispose of them. It was my method of repressing the grief i felt for losing the most popular kind of shoes. When the internet was as prevalent in 2000, as it is in 2016, a basic Internet search will have proven me that my shoes have been fully repairable.
Right after I explained excellent-bye to my much loved Arizona's, I did not swap them. Why? I'm not quite positive. I do believe there have been many reasons ontributing to this 15 calendar year Birkenstock-less gap in my existence.
For starters, my sweetheart back then regarded as Birkenstocks a male repeller. He advised that we choose a more female shoe. I appreciated this man a whole lot and then he affected my style alternatives back then. I used to be within my very early 20s and, even though I used to be a feminist at heart, I found myself still youthful and impressionable.
One more reason that I may not have bought a replacing couple of Birkenstocks was as a result of fiscal restrictions. When my original Birks fell apart, I had been doing work part time and a graduate college student. Birkenstocks are an investment piece to one's clothing collection. During the time, I had to choose a less costly couple of sandals.
In addition, in early 2000s, I found myself about to enter the working planet. I felt required to wear a certain way to go with an enterprise nvironment. Using Birkenstocks did not look like an intelligent option. In those days, Birkenstock did not have elegant uppers. Currently, Birkenstocks are far significantly less granola looking. They create shoes with shiny and glittery uppers. Anybody can easily dress up or attire along the shoes for job or perhaps for engage in.
The shoes I wore for function usually possessed a heel. The good news is, I used to be never the sort of lady to put on shoes with super great, very lean high heels. The shoes of my shoes tended to be chunky. Chunky heels provide better foot help when compared with lean heels.
I know seeing that even though larger pumps are less challenging on one's feet, they could still result in foot discomfort as well as other problems. These problems compound as time passes. 1 typically fails to notice them till the harm has already been accomplished. Therefore, I put in nearly all of my 20s in heeled shoes and it also was not until I approached mid 30's that we started off experiencing complications with foot irritation. I will only picture simply how much a whole lot worse my feet and again concerns would have been basically if i experienced I put on great, slim shoes.
One of several main reasons i ceased wearing heeled shoes is caused by what I have learned about persistent problems at the office. I function in the health proper care field. Years ago, I needed a 90 year old affected individual with arthritis in their hands and feet. As well as the arthritis, she experienced bunions on each foot from putting on slim, great heeled shoes nearly all of her daily life. I met together with her some day soon after she got decreased in the house. She wanted that she would got worn a lot more accommodating shoes when she was younger. She revealed that unwell installing shoes induced her to obtain unusual feet. This direct her to have an unsteady gait in old age and, hence, created her a fall danger.
The previously mentioned interaction has tied to me for 10 years. Immediately after my chat using this individual, I stopped wearing heeled shoes. I transitioned into my Dansko years. I wore Dansko shoes from my mid 20s to early on 30s. Compared to my prior function shoes, Danskos offered me using a broad width shoe and supplied me arch assist.
After many years of putting on Danskos, I started noticing issues. I had been dropping and often twisting my ankle while wearing Dansko clogs. Furthermore, i started getting very painful discomfort on the balls of my feet. That's once the joint disease in my huge toes appeared.
The pain in my feet worsened as i grew to be expecting a baby and started out transporting extra infant excess weight. No more would I wear a shoe which was not slide resistant. One among my co-staff sprained her ankle while using Danskos. I was not gonna possibility a sprained ankle while having a youngster.
Keens were actually my shoe of choice for another few years. I gave up type, rather than comfort. After having youngsters, I no more cared what people contemplated my design. The one thing I cared about was receiving enough sleep to make it through my work day.
I Adore Birkenstocks, Birkenstock, Birkenstock Rivets, Cork Restore, Dark Printer Footbed, Yellowish Ink cartridge Footbed, Birkenstock Addict, Metallic Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Boots, Birkenstock Shoes, Birkenstock Package, Birkenstock Recraft, Birkenstock Resole, White colored Sole Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Restoration, Birkenstock Real, Fake Birkenstocks, Shearling Birkenstock, Knock Off Birkenstocks, Bogus Birkenstocks, delicate footbed, I Really Like Birkenstocks, Birkenstock United states of america, splitting in Birkenstocks, Birkenstock uppers, Birkenstock Arizona, Birkenstock Boston, The best way to Burglary Birkenstocks, Gizeh toe post, Gentlemen and Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Sore spots, Narrow Breadth Birkenstocks Birkenstocks, Regular Size Birkenstocks, Large Size Birkenstocks, Bespoke
Instance of a move-on Eager.
Keens had been sensible and comfy, however in no way were they "lovable" or "elegant". I recall getting a pair of slide-on Keens when I was way too pregnant to bend over and buckle/tie up a shoe. I was very nauseous your day I purchased those Keens. I stayed nauseous the time period of my being pregnant while I wore those fall-on shoes. A day following having a baby, I drawn those Keens out from the dresser and that i was strike having a influx of queasiness. Now i connected Keens with queasiness. The time had come to find a new brand that made me not want to puke.
I wanted a cute, accommodating shoe which had been not proceeding to make a tumble chance. I tried a variety of styles of shoes before 1 day coming across a Zappos ad for Birkenstocks. I saw the advertisement and experienced warm fuzzies inside. The eyesight of Birkenstocks delivered rear fantastic thoughts of my youngsters. I clicked the link.
In 2015, Birkenstocks re-came into my entire life. The Birkenstocks immediately presented arch assist and metatarsal support that my feet preferred. I no longer necessary to carry on my search for the right shoe, I had re-found it. Birkenstocks emerged back to my well being such as an old close friend. We had been pleased to see one another and started out our reunion correct where we remaining off.
Birkenstock now gives so many kinds of uppers that we sensed elegant and womanly once again. I have done not sense by doing this while sporting Keens. Moreover, I had been not vulnerable to twisting an foot, like as i wore Danskos. Also, my feet were actually no longer getting damaged in narrow, heeled outfit shoes. Birkenstocks enabled my feet to relax within their organic placement.
Critics debate that Birkenstocks make one's foot "splay" since the footbed is vast. Per the Meriam Webster dictionary, to splay is "to cause to spread out outward". What areas of the body splay and develop abnormally when limited? None. Whenever your foot is taken away from your shoe that it needs to adapt, your foot will be free to move toward its typical kind. Those who dress in non-binding shoes will not grow sasquatch feet, they develop normal feet.
Incorporating Birkenstocks back in my life makes my feet truly feel standard once more. No more am I seeking to adapt my foot into shoes which do not match. With Birkenstocks, my feet are put into shoes that feel like these were customized for me personally. Once I wear my Birks, I feel like I am just walking on helpful clouds. My feet are pleased, consequently I am satisfied. We have found a balance between what seems great and what appearance good.
Birkenstocks allow the muscle tissues within my feet and tendons to stretch out effectively. I no more have pain in my feet and rear. I am depending on my feet to keep me upright because i grow older beautifully.
I plan to flourish well into old age alongside my sweetheart from 2000. That man who disliked Birkenstocks a great deal is my hubby. His view on Birkenstocks changed over the years. (He now even is the owner of a couple of sets -- due to me). Currently, my partner stimulates me to put on shoes that actually work ideal for my needs.
Way too awful it had taken me 20 years to understand that my feet necessary the help provided by Birkenstock shoes. I think that I dropped decade along with a 50 % of getting truly comfortable shoes. Fortunately that Birkenstocks are actually back in my well being and my feet are content.

Reading the tea leaves from one election in order to predict the next is difficult but not impossible. There are two ways to do it. One way is to look at what the current election tells us about the relative strengths and weaknesses of the likely players in the next election. For that analysis, turn to my colleague Bill Galston’s piece. In it he looks at the likely effects of this election on Biden and on Trump, and he discusses the importance of the Democratic governors races. The second way to look at it is what I will call the “plate tectonics” of American politics. This term was coined by Bill a few years ago in a piece I co-authored with him. It refers to the factors, geographic and demographic, that are constantly moving—slowly—and which occasionally lead to earthquakes.
As Al Gore and Hillary Clinton know only too well, presidential elections don’t turn on the national popular vote but on the electoral vote in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Thus, changes in the partisan makeup of certain states can have enormous effects on the (mostly) winner-take-all systems of awarding electors. Over time, states change their partisan make-up. Although this is a complicated process, most of it is due to people moving into a state and bringing their partisan leanings with them. One of the most stunning examples is Vermont—a state that for most of the 20th century was referred to by politicians in the know as “rock-ribbed” Republican. In fact, Vermont was one of only two states that voted against Franklin Roosevelt in his landslide 1936 election. But over the past decades New Yorkers moved to the idyllic state to escape the city and carried with them their far-left wing politics. So today, Vermont is the only state in the union to have a U.S. Senator who is an independent who identifies as a Democratic socialist, and last night elected Peter Welch to the Senate, making him only the second Democrat to represent the state in that chamber.
Analyzing the plate tectonics of politics leads us to take a careful look at what has been happening in three “purple” states—Arizona, Georgia and Nevada. Arizona used to be a reliably Republican state and yet, to Trump’s surprise and to the surprise of nearly every pundit in America, he lost that state in 2020. Today, it is the fourth or fifth most popular state in the union to move to—based on census data and on very interesting data from the U-Haul company—which tracks moves.
A large number of the people moving to Arizona are from California. For many of them, Arizona offers a lower cost of living, lower taxes, lower housing costs, less traffic, and good schools plus natural beauty.
Not surprisingly there are a lot of Democrats among these California transplants who are part of the reason Arizona has become a very competitive state. The state was solidly Republican for much of the 20th century and in the first six presidential elections of the 21st century. The razor thin margins in 2020 and in 2022 are testament to the changing nature of the state.
Georgia is right up there with Arizona in terms of the number of people moving there. Atlanta has been an economic powerhouse for some time now. As one professor put it—Atlanta is part of the “growth” South not the “stagnant” South. And Atlanta and its suburbs are the center of that growth. People from around the country and the world have been moving there making it the center of Democratic politics in the state. In fact, as Professor Charles Bullock, a political scientist at the University of Georgia says: “We know that the strongest Republican voters are people who’ve been in Georgia more than 20 years… Individuals who have been in Georgia less time are more likely to be Democratic.”
Finally, Nevada, like Arizona and Georgia, has seen in-migration that is making it a more competitive state. Like Arizona, most of the new residents are coming from California. In Washoe County, home of Reno, Nevada, the new Tesla plant and other high-tech businesses are attracting people from the San Francisco Bay area who are bringing with them their famously deep blue politics. Meanwhile, Las Vegas, the state’s largest city, is a powerhouse of job creation, ranking behind only three other metro areas in the United States with the fastest growth in job postings. At the presidential level, Nevada has been Democratic since 2008, and its consistently high job growth seems likely to cement that tendency with voters from California.
Because the plate tectonics move so slowly, we can expect very close presidential and Senate elections in these states in the next few years. However, if the trends keep going, these states may end up as reliable wins in the Democratic column in future election cycles.

Hey grandfather and Jenny I discovered this really cool trick as an artist and a writer… And as you can tell society influences the television… I love that for both of you so much because you’re seeing less of both of you and less of that garbage ass influence
Don’t worry it got even more complicated to the point where Jenny was getting raped in the asshole almost every time she had sex I guess when it comes down to Jenny is honoring yourself
Rather than trying to honor me because it doesn’t honor me for you to act that way
I think that grandfather is very intimidated by me but I think we already knew that I probably about 1012 years ago
10 or 12
Grandma would like to say ha I’m not intimidated by that little thing what other things do you want to say about me grandmother I think you are intimidated by this little thing
But that also reminds me cleanliness is godliness and do you know I’m seeing some very very strange Asian faces and oh for sure you guys are definitely my favorites I love you guys you know why? I have humility and a soul
Jenny doesn’t really want to be Jenny so she thought she would throw that shit on me but then they wanted to take clean things and this is where of course you guys know we have to get a lot of mafia people involved we’re not gonna have you guys trafficking little babies and molesting and putting batteries up their rectums
No Jenny and those they they want me dead and I don’t care I would probably be really mad if I were in their shoes but they caused me a fair amount of shit.
Well of course it’s unfair it’s not as though they’ll ever be anybody who matters they are provincial women from Chandler Arizona and they wanna act like trash forever on my dime I don’t think so so you know use their assholes as cum buckets I don’t care

Lexie does her neurosurgery fellowship under Derek’s guidance and mentoring. He’s never seen a young surgeon with as much promise as her and constantly pulls her in on complicated cases. He is grateful for her presence as well as Amelia’s because it gives him the freedom to be a more present father and work on research.
Lexie loves neuro so much, especially spinal cases. She took real interest in spina bifida—partially because of Zola. Lexie begins to research spina bifida in pediatric patients so she ends up getting very involved in Alex’s African Exchange Program.
The work she’s doing is inspiring and she isn’t opposed to pro bono surgeries. In fact, Lexie Grey is the first person to say yes to pro bono work. She is extremely philanthropic and generous, something highly uncharacteristic of neurosurgeons. Still, she wants to make even more of a difference in patients lives. So she actually decides to do a second fellowship in peds surgery, becoming the hospital's first exclusive pediatric neurosurgeon (Bailey loves her even more after that).
So aside from being on team neuro, she also joins team peds with Arizona and Alex. They are fierce advocates for the little ones under their care and will go to the ends of the earth to make sure that the kids get everything they could ever need.
As an attending, Lexie is sweet but doesn’t take crap from anyone and since she works on such delicate patients, she only allows the best to scrub in with her. She is a great teacher and is always ready to share her knowledge with the interns and residents under her. She refuses to berate them and instead takes a softer approach with them.
Lexie and Mark get married soon after Lexie finishes her residency. Almost dying in a plane crash puts a lot of things into perspective. So when Lexie and Mark return from their honeymoon and Lexie starts her neuro fellowship, she is no longer Dr. Lexie Grey. Instead, she is Dr. Lexie Grey-Sloan. It’s a bit nice to have a professional distinction from her sister, but at the end of the day, those close to her still often call her Little Grey.
Once Lexie finishes her fellowship, she and Mark decide to give Sofia a sibling or two. They end up having a little girl first—Dorothy Alexandra Sloan—and about a year and a half later they have a son—August Maxwell Sloan.
Due to their interesting family dynamics with Callie and Arizona, as the kids grow up, all three of them love saying that they’ve got one dad and three moms. It makes them sound like sister wives but Mark honestly doesn’t seem to mind it. He actually gets a little smug when people assume that he’s in cahoots with not just one, but three gorgeous women. Lexie is known as Mama Lex to Sofia, while Callie and Arizona are MC (Mama Callie) and Mimi to Dorothy and August.
Life is good. Everyone is happy. And everyone lives.

Battle of knowledge
Tumblr media
Pairing: Spencer Reid x male!reader
Summary: When a battle of knowledge abruptly occurs as the two known doctors meet at a case, everyone is partially amused by their hate towards the other, as they both differ their problems in quite a unusual way afterwards.
Warnings: Mentions of case, usual cm stuff…, slight sex allusions (rated T just in case the mentions happen to be something that’d be rated like that)
Word count:  1.7 k
A/N: Hey everyone!! I hope you guys are well!! I took this request from @imagining-in-the-margins as she didn’t want it, so here I am :) that fic is kind of dedicated to @ontheoddoccasioniwritestuff , I thought a lot about you as I wrote this fic :)! Hope everyone enjoys. (yeah the dialogue is ehhh in the first half to me, sorry for that)

When Spencer had gone all the way from Virginia to Arizona for a case that had yet to upset the rest of his team, he didn't actually expect another person to upset him as much as the authors of the crime themselves.
The other person was known as the genius of the team, another "version" of him, except that he was in Arizona, with a slightly different rank.
He didn't think badly of him at first, he appreciated the fact of having another person similar to him, which meant that he didn't have to explain the terms he'd use to someone else, he could talk without complications.
He’d usually have to pause in his lecture to explain some stuff, but he didn’t feel like he’d need to do it with him.
"Arizona's genius, y/n y/l/n. It's nice to meet you all. I heard there's another genius here. As much as I'd like to have a nice chat, killers are on the loose, so, eventually, at the end of the case."
The way he had talked was completely fascinating to him, even if he wanted to, he couldn't draw his eyes off him as he talked.
The first words had completely convinced them, and he really felt like he could have a correct interaction with him.
It wasn't everyday that he'd had the occasion to meet another mind similar to his.
This happened to be quite relieving considering the complicity of the case, and it would be much faster for everything to be answered as they'll be two.
"No, he's not that type of guy! Look at what he did, especially at the third victim!" He yelled.
"We have all reasons to think he could be like that, I didn't say it definitely is, but it could be." Spencer argued, pissed off by his words.
"The M.O you just described doesn't really fit, something is missing, and none of what you said makes it right."
"It's the closest thing we have, it's that or we completely start from scratch, as if it's "wrong" to you."
"I don't think it's only to me, and it's better to try to start again than continue with what we have and possibly launch into a wall because that wasn't right. Okay, that's going to take time, but might as well get it right."
"When I expected for the case to go smoothly, I didn't come all the way for this, since when are you so annoying?"
"Oh, now I'm annoying? I'm just doing my job, and you're the one acting offended. So," He paused, as he gathered papers before walking away. "If you excuse me, I have to catch the ones doing this, instead of wasting time. Come back to me when you're in a better mood to work correctly." Y/N said, as another coworker of his approached Spencer not long after he had left.
"Um...I doubt that'll make the situation better, but he acts like that, sometimes. It may seem that he's not going to work, but don't worry, it's mainly so he can...get himself back in the right head space." He explained. "Don't try...get pissed off at each other too often, none of our unit chiefs will be happy with that."
"He could have been less...like that."
"It's just y/l/n being himself, 'can't do much about it. Anyway, let's get back to work, and try to get better you two, at least till we wrap the case."
"Trouble's around." Derek chirped to JJ.
"This case is going to be...fun. Let's hope we at least get to have a distraction."
"Oh, don't worry JJ, we'll have one. They're not done fighting. Definitely not."
"Do you think they're gonna make up and become friends, or yell at each other until the end?" Emily asked.
"A mix of the two. They'll kinda hate each other, but not enough to resist having a conversation between geniuses." Garcia answered.
"True. It's not every day that the both of them get to talk with someone that understands their stuff." Derek pointed out.
"Let's hope that we'll get to see some animation in between work."

"Are you here to yell again or try to have a calm conversation?" Y/N asked, as soon as Spencer entered.
"I don't get why you're directly attacking before I get to say anything." Spencer protested.
"Just in case."
"Okay, do you have something against me or what? Because I can't work if you keep being angry all of the time."
"I'm not angry." He answered.
"Then I'm a clown if I can't even read your face. It's written on your forehead that you are, you're literally an open book." Spencer closed the door, having a slight feeling that the conversation would possibly get louder.
"I thought you weren't supposed to profile the people you work with, no? I'm not your coworker, but we're working on this case together, so don't profile me unless I ask, which will never happen."
"I don't get you."
"What is there even to understand? You're the one I don't get."
"It's you that I can't figure out. I just can't stand you right now."
"Unfortunately, I'm afraid you'll have to calm your nerves till we finish that case. Because I'm not wasting twenty minutes explaining what is there to "understand" about me." He spit back, glancing at Spencer.
"I can't keep talking with you if you act like that."
"I'm not a cute puppy in case you haven't figured that out. I'm not going to be nice just for you, especially when you point out that I'm not how you like to be talked."
"I didn't specify anything."
"Didn't you, doctor?" He focused on the last word, raising his eyebrows.
"Damn it." Spencer walked up to him in a snap, glancing at him for a split second before suddenly taking in his face in his hands as he roughly kissed him.
Not even one of them expected that it'd just take a single argument to let the pressure out.
They were just kissing each other, like that. Spencer was the one who started it, not even wondering if he'd return it or walk away, but turns out that y/n had been the one to take the lead after that, as he gripped his hair, slamming him against the wall.
Nothing really mattered in that moment, they didn't even think about the others possibly walking in, all they both needed to do was to let out of all the frustration contained since this morning.
It wasn't quite only anger, but also because they had both wanted each other, in their own way.
As much as Y/N was afraid to admit it, he did imagine it, slamming him against the wall, even if he wouldn't be strong or even courageous enough to do that.
Spencer did imagine gripping his jaw, especially after he walked out in fury, he was so upset about him that all he wanted was to kiss him to let him know what he felt.
He didn't want to admit it, but he hated it whenever someone raised his voice at him, he needed to do that to calm himself, in some way.
If they weren't in some police station, their shirts would have already been on the floor, the layers of clothes between them were more than infuriating as they tugged at the other's shirt.
And even when they stopped for a moment to breathe again, it didn't take much for their lips to link again after a short glance.
Spencer quickly flipped y/n the other way so he'd be the one against the wall, and to his surprise, his face quickly gained another tint.
He caged him in with one arm against the wall, gripping his chin with the other, as y/n tugged at his hair again, not knowing where else to put them.
Things went fast so quickly, they didn't even think about what they'd do, they just went with the flow.
What they forgot to think and pay attention about, was that they weren't alone in the place.
Literally all of the people working at the station were there, and could possibly start to look for them.
They really didn't care about it, none of them broke the kiss to point it out, it was just four walls, them, and their mixed feelings.
"I still can't stand you." Spencer said in between when they briefly broke the kiss.
"Me neither." He blurted out.
As one of them probably guessed at some point, their inattention cost them when they didn't even hear the lock of the door over their breaths.
"Hey, we found…" JJ walked in, stopping in the middle of the sentence.
The door kept itself open, as the noise of the outside drew in, causing them to break away as both of their eyes were wide open.
Spencer's hair was a mess, strands going everywhere, which would need to be at least fixed with his hand for him to be presentable.
Only the back of y/n's hair was messed up as he was against the wall most of the time.
Both of their shirts had a few buttons out, although, y/n's was the closest to being on the floor if someone hadn't come.
By the time they had begun slowly walking away from the other, she had definitely just seen them making out.
"...something." She ended the sentence, not quite knowing what to say after witnessing the event.
"Oh, uh...we'll uh...meet you in just a sec." Spencer said.
"Right. Okay." JJ responded, closing the door in a hurry.
"I hate to say this to you, but I think we're screwed." Y/N pointed out once she was gone.
"They'll definitely be able to tell from the look on her face and ours when we'll get out."
"Yeah, we should have…done it elsewhere."
"It's a bit late for that."
"You're the one who started, you should have at least chosen another place genius."
"I have to admit it but, true."
"They'll definitely figure out you're the one who started, you basically entered after me."
"I hate you."
"No, you don't. You just don't like me." He corrected Spencer, as he opened the door to walk out, walking out of the room.
It didn't take much for some of their coworkers's eyes to lay on them as they entered their vision.
Spencer discreetly approached y/n after Hotch began talking, making sure the attention was elsewhere.
"I'm going to show you how much I 'just don't like you' when we're out of here, you're gonna see."
"Deal."

Beauty, Beast, Bullets - Your Resume
Plot:   yeah, yeah, Romania is full of vampires, werewolves, and metal-men, but the reader is not phased.  In fact, they’re rather experienced.  Heisenberg, specifically, is intrigued. [Karl Heisenberg x GenderNeutral!Reader]
Word Count: 1,191
Warnings:  so, y’know the outlast games?  trigger warning for basically everything that was in those games.
A/N:  surprise, this is technically a crossover with Outlast and The Magnus Archives, but not really!  you don’t need to know anything about either of those things to read this, it’ll just be really fucked up instead of, “Oh hey, I know what they’re talking about!”
Anyway, this fic is like, rated M for mature, so please read with caution

The village wasn’t your first brush with the weird and wacky horrors this world has to offer.  Technically, it didn’t start with the asylum and Murkoff, either.  Nah, your complicated relationship with the supernatural started when you got lost in a never-ending corridor at the age of twelve.  That was a trip and a half, but really, it wasn’t.  You’d never done drugs, and you weren’t asleep.  Back then, you even had a normal sleep schedule.  It was just a weird experience, though you got the sense that your therapist would doubt that.  Especially since that fun trip wouldn’t be your last encounter with some pretty fucked up shit.
After the hallways, you’d been chased by creatures made of shadow, beings without faces, and honest to god, actual fucking werewolves.  It wasn’t great.  Your teenage years were spent cowering in fear, running from every threat that came at you, and trying not to die.
“Wasn’t great” is an understatement.  Your teenage years fucking sucked.
Eventually, you got tired of being scared.  You were sick of the fear.  You hated it, and that led you right to the BSAA.  You learned, there, how to fight the things that frightened you.
Fighting didn’t stop them.  You spent your days seeing things out of the corners of your eyes and readying yourself to run at any moment.  You felt eyes on your back, watching you, always.  You felt hunted.  You felt like you were losing your mind.
And then, one day, it all stopped.  Not because you destroyed the source or anything, it just ended.  You remember it was as if all of the monsters that lived to torment you had been removed from the universe in a millisecond.
Your fear was gone.
But the BSAA was not.
You had been working for the BSAA for about two years when the first Murkoff thing went down.  Some guy with too much money and too much time had been conducting human experiments under the facade of an asylum, shit happened, the experiments escaped, and somehow, a couple of journalists got to the scene before you.  Poor bastards.
The “Mount Massive” incident was a bit of a big deal, but, of course, it wasn’t big enough for the BSAA to send anyone important, so, they sent you.  You had never been more afraid for your life than you were within those walls.
Your monsters were gone, and some cruel god had decided to replace them with innocent and guilty people alike tortured beyond recognition.  You got the more docile of the survivors out of that hell and into actual healthcare.  The more violent survivors had to be dealt with differently.
Once the site was cleared of survivors, you were then instructed to clean the asylum, just to make sure any biohazards ended up in the right hands.  Really, you should’ve just burned the building.  The asylum itself was a biohazard, soaked in blood, shit, and semen.  The stench of piss and vomit permeated every space you entered.  Every room was filled with more corpses than a damn graveyard.  It was awful.  And then, you found the tapes.
Hours upon hours of someone’s last moments, though you couldn’t tell his name, you could tell that he was really, really dedicated to his job.  You never found his body.
You found others, though.  Cadavers and corpses piled on top of each other, burned, and broken, and mutilated in ways you didn’t want to think about, much less describe.  Then there were the documents, piles of paper detailing exactly what the fuck had been done to the patients over the asylum’s operating years.  You had to read each and every one of them.  At least half were stained with blood.  For the first time in a long time, you were afraid again.  You hated it.
You did not have a good time.
But you did a good job.
Good enough that the next time the Murkoff corporation fucked up, you were sent in once again.
Joy.
The second time, the mess was in Arizona.  It was some cult that got fucked over by its proximity to another experiment.  The people living there lost their minds entirely.  The few you found alive were riddled with disease and bloodlust.  There was one survivor, that time, and he wasn’t even a member of the cult.  He was another fucking journalist, ironically enough.  When you found him he was a muttering, shambling mess, tripping over corpses and calling out for someone named Jess.
You had him evacuated as quickly as possible.
He couldn’t get out of there soon enough.
That left you to investigate the wreckage.  Once again, the entire location was covered with blood and shit, though it had the slim advantage of being mostly outdoors.
The bodies were worse, the second time around.  It wasn’t that you weren’t used to seeing corpses at that point, you were more than used to seeing corpses.  It was just that there were kids that time.  Dead kids, and skinned adults.  Perfect.
Of course, that wasn’t all of them.  Most of the bodies had evidence of poison in their systems, which, admittedly, made clean up easier.  For the most part.
Just before the Arizona cult had come onto the BSAA’s radar, there had been an explosion in the mountains.  That was actually why your bosses knew about the damn thing in the first place.  The ruble was a joy to clean up, honestly.
In the months that followed, you tried to wash the blood off of your hands.  It wouldn’t leave.  It was a small mercy that you weren’t afraid of the cult’s remnants, but something worse hung on your shoulders.  Guilt.  Despair.
You’d spent the majority of your Spring cleaning up corpses, it was valid to feel that way.  You deserved time to grieve.  The BSAA did not care.  You were on the field again before the end of the year.
At least your third case wasn’t a Murkoff thing.  Nope, you’d been deemed important enough to serve under Chris fucking Redfield, which was apparently a big deal, but by then you didn’t really care.
There were fewer corpses that time.  It was mostly just black goop.  Sometimes, you had to shoot the black goop.  It wasn’t much you hadn’t done before, all things considered.  It was just another rotten place, further along than most, but decomposing nonetheless.  You weren’t scared.  You didn’t feel guilty or sad, either.  Just disgusted.
There were more survivors, though.  That was nice.  They weren’t even journalists, which was a bonus.  You were actually enjoying the slight change of pace.
Then Chris Redfield pulled you aside and told you to quit your job.
That was a little bit too much change.
You did it anyway.
The BSAA should’ve given you more time off.
For a while after that, you just floated in space, waiting for something to happen.  Life became mundane.  Boring.  It almost made you long for another endless corridor to run down, or a faceless crowd or shadow creature to chase you.
You didn’t get any of those things.
But you did get werewolves because Chris “boulder-punching asshole” Redfield sent you to buttfuck nowhere Romania.  It was plagued with werewolves.   You were warned of this.
You went anyway.
