Hi,

I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.

I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.

I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

Pasadena ArtNight, Pasadena, CA 91101

Love ArtNight in Pasadena. It happens twice a year, once in March and again in October. ArtNight is a free evening of art, music, and entertainment at multiple venues across Pasadena. It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit the smaller art venues that tend to be overlooked. The participating organizations vary every time and the programming changes as well. It’s amazing how many arts and cultural institutions there are in Pasadena, probably more than any city its size. I still haven’t made it to every venue, even though I’ve been attending ArtNight for years.

Free shuttles are available to take you to different parts of Pasadena. The event starts at 6 PM and lasts till 10 PM. Some food trucks also participate.

Supporting numerous publications on the art of ancient Gandhara, Claude de Marteau was perhaps best known for his expertise in Gandharan sculpture. His connoisseurship is epitomized by this almost life-size statue of the Buddha, which excels for its naturalism, grace, and contemplative attitude.

The ancient region of Gandhara, which spanned modern-day northwest Pakistan and southern Afghanistan, was home to a vibrant, cosmopolitan civilization situated at the crossroads of international trade networks linking South Asia, Central Asia, China, and the Mediterranean. Because of its verdant terrain and lucrative trade position, the region fell repeatedly to foreign raids and invaders. The Kushans, originally from Central Asia and already having incorporated elements of Greek culture, established themselves in Gandhara in the early first century CE. Under the Kushan ruler Kanishka (127-151 CE), Gandharan Buddhist art and architecture flourished, resulting in the creation of some of the earliest iconic images of the historical Buddha, such as the present statue.

Indicative of Gandharan art's appealing multiculturalism, the stone carver who created the present image of the Buddha was clearly as well-versed in Buddhist iconography as he was in the Greco-Roman aesthetic tradition of naturalism. He succeeds in realistically modelling the figure's stance with a gentle, understated contrapposto, lightly bending the right knee and placing more weight on the left leg—imbuing movement within his creation. He effortlessly conveys the Buddha's supple physique, suggested under the sweeping pleats of his heavy monastic robe. To this, the sculptor has added certain physiological features, rooted in Indic religions, that distinguish an enlightened being (mahalakshana). A raised circular dot in the middle of his brow represents his urna, from which in many sutras, the Buddha emits a ray of light to illuminate distant worlds. Crisp, wavy locks are pulled over an ushnisha, a cranial protuberance endowed with a variety of magical powers. Another prominent symbol of his enlightened consciousness is the large halo backing his head and shoulders. But perhaps most profound is the arresting quietude evoked by his heart-shaped, mustachioed visage, whose heavy-lidded downward expression conveys a solemn detachment from the world.

The present sculpture's torso and stance are portrayed with a higher degree of naturalism than a representative example in the British Museum (1947,0511.1). The soft treatment of the robes compares well with Gandharan sculptures of the Buddha held in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena (F.1975.04.2.S), and sold at Christie's, New York, 21 March 2008, lot 527. A Gandharan Buddha with a similar cordate facial type is in the Tokyo National Museum (C0097675). Depicting Maitreya, the Future Buddha, venerated in the pedestal below Shakyamuni's feet, the present sculpture belongs to an iconic trope in Gandharan art also represented by a Buddha in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2014.188), and reflected in examples sold at Christie's, New York, 25 March 2004, lot 18, and Bonhams, Hong Kong, 2 December 2021, lot 1036.

Event: Pitching Competition

Location: Actors Center Australia (23 Norton Street, Italian Forum, Shop 30 A Italian Forum Performance Precinct, Leichhardt NSW 2040)

Before the event, the staff of Inner West Film Festival sent us the photos of Juries for us and volunteers to be familiar. In the morning, I went to DMU for borrowing the equipment, FX30 Camera, Tripod and Rode Mic.

After we arrived, we put all the equipment, bags and personal belongings inside the staff room. Then we helped them to carry some boxes of booklets, clothes, bags and other merchandise made for film festival this year from their car at the parking area to the Actors Center, then set the booklets on the tables in the Actors Center for people who came and may be interested in those films to plan and book tickets online. After giving each of us a black T-shirt with Inner West Film Fest, we went to set up the camera and other equipment.

Before the Pitching Competition, we tried to interview some audiences and film makers (though got rejected a few times), also captured the interactive moments between people to show this is a very popular and successful event: Staffs and volunteers were working hard. People were gathering as crowds, talking and enjoying the drinks. Film makers and producers were talking, and hugged rarely.

During the Pitching Competition, I listened all the pitching and tried to remember all the pitching team while filming them from where the audiences were sitting. In the beginning of the Pitching Competition, I forgot to turn the mic on. Luckily, this will not affect much to the video of highlight of this event for social media. But this kind of situation did not happen again. After the Pitching Competition, we tried to interview all the pitching team. Though there were too many people, we just couldn’t find everyone, we tried to find them and ask if they would like to accept a short interview to talk about their films and themselves.

Hope next year's film festival will be able to provide a room for interviewing the pitching team and arrange a time schedule for this. So people can set the camera, tripod, mic and lighting better.

After the Pitching Competition, I was mostly interested in BIRD HANDS BEAVER A FISHMINT BOUQUET, ECHO 8 and NOBODY WITH A JOB READS THE REPUBLIC. "Pain travels through families until someone is ready to feel it" used by Kim Pham in her pitching, probably not only hits my heart, but hearts of many people with Asian family background. I felt like more and more people in Asia or have Asian background start to realize the importance of mental health and the problem with family which was rarely talked and discussed in public before. So many film makers started to make this kind of film to reveal the problem, encourage the audiences who were facing the similar situation or problem to make change or just comfort them.

About ECHO 8, the speaker, Maria Tran actually left deeper impression on me than the trailer of her film. She was really confident about herself and her films, showed her passion and ambition, convincing the listener that she knows what she is doing and she will be succeed.

USC Pacific Asia Museum, 46 North Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101

I visited the Pacific Asia Art Museum a few years ago, during ArtNight, and returned again during another ArtNight. I don’t think anything in the permanent collection changed between the two visits. But there is a gallery with rotating exhibits. During my recent visit, they had an exhibit of current Chinese American artists called Another Beautiful Country. It was a multimedia exhibit with quite a few video art installations, b/w family photos taken in China, a display of objects and menus from the artist’s mom’s Chinese restaurant, etc.

The permanent collection has pottery, a Samurai outfit, Indian illustrated manuscripts, wood objects from Papua New Guinea, Chinese furniture and clothing, Korean masks, etc. There’s a room with interactive exhibits for kids, and a small gift shop.

It's a small museum but the building (resembling a Chinese imperial palace) is stunning. It’s a historic landmark that was built in 1926. The Chinese garden/inner courtyard features a small pool and decorative carvings. Unfortunately, the public isn’t allowed upstairs.

General admission is $15, $12 for students and senior, and free on the second Sunday of the month. Every Thursday is a pay what you wish day.

Norton Simon is a much bigger museum with much more Asian art. But Pacific Asia Art Museum has a wider variety of Asian art objects and has contemporary Asian art. Norton Simon does not.

José Rizal has a good claim to being the first Asian nationalist. An extremely talented Malay born a hundred years ago in a small town near Manila, educated partly in the Philippines and partly in Europe, Rizal inspired the Filipinos by his writing and example to make the first nationalist revolution in Asia in 1896. Today the Philippines revere Rizal as their national hero, and they regard his two books, The Lost Eden (Noli Me Tangere) and The Subversive (El Filibusterismo) as the gospel of their nationalism.

The Subversive, first published in 1891, is strikingly timely today. New nations emerging in Africa and Asia are once again in conflict with their former colonial masters, as were the Filipinos with their Spanish rulers in Rizal's day. The Subversive poses questions about colonialism which are still being asked today: does a civilizing mission justify subjection of a people? Should a colony aim at assimilation or independence? If independence, should it be by peaceful evolution or force of arms?

Despite the seriousness of its theme, however, The Subversive is more than a political novel. It is a romantic, witty, satirical portrait of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines at the end of the nineteenth century, written in the tradition of the great adventure romances. The translation by Leon Ma. Guerrero, Philippine ambassador to the Court of St. James, conveys the immediacy of the original, and makes this important work available to a new generation of readers. His translation of The Lost Eden is also available in the Norton Library.
