Going to pick Lumir for this one. He’s one of my most intriguing characters because I just love his identity issues brought on by the fact that he has no set/default face because of his mutation, which forces him to cycle through appearances at random. He has nothing that marks him as “me, I’m Lumir, this is what maks me me” and it really messes with him, wearing a different face every hour or so. He’s also kind of a prickly dick (which makes me love him more lol).

His other mutation is a perfect, unflawed memory. This also messes with him lol.

These two powers might have made him only a Class B anomaly, but it also made him a perfect assassin. See why this guy is one of my faves?!

Happy Storyteller Saturday! What would Game Night™ look like for your characters?

had a super busy weekend and didn't even get any writing done, so I apologize but here we go -

Going to do Laboratory Arc and Post-Laboratory Arc for Anomaly, since Jaith ought to be included and he was not part of the Laboratory Arc okay so -

Laboratory Arc -

Emeren diplomatically trying to get everyone to get along while Lumir and Shraya yell at each other; Lumir's perfect memory mutation let him figure out exactly who had which cards and he used that to perfectly sweep everyone, Shraya not happy, Jasley is happy to be there, Rheoline is singing to herself and Aleto is hiding from the madness behind the couch

Post-Laboratory Arc -

Emeren would not play, too busy watching Jaith's back to make sure no one is trying to spontaneously murder him during the game. Aleto would be trying to get along with Emeren while he pointedly ignores her; Scylie makes an attempt to cheat, Jaith is being devious and faking his hand and everyone but Lumir, who again is winning by a landslide, falls for it - Shraya is again ready to fight him.

In Anomaly, I'm really proud of my idea of augs.

Augs, short for augmentations, is the idea that powers can be "harvested" from Class B anomalies and used as chips/upgrades/augmentations for those without powers. They don't mimic the anomaly's abilities exactly, and if the power is more complex it may lead to complications for the civilian to use them.

No one has been able to replicate a Class A anomaly's powers into an aug yet.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! It's Valentine's Day, or a similarly romantic occasion, how do your characters celebrate? (I'd love to hear about the unattached characters just as much as the ones in relationships.)

Happy STS! (apologies for late)

Lumir - if he has no date, likely has an inordinate amount of whiskey and disappears for a while

Emeren - thinks bitterly about the fleeting "romance," if one can call it that, with Rheoline while they were still in the laboratory together, and ignores the holiday entirely

Jaith - uses the holiday as an excuse to be even more the center of attention than usual, manipulating others into thinking he has no one to spend the day with which will get him plenty of gifts and sweet words

Aleto - if her (remaining) lab family isn't in any danger and she can take a day off from her duties as the new leader, she might shyly approach someone who has been trying to get her attention for a while

Shraya - no time for this shit, she's got matches to win

Tens But…

I was tagged by @mrbexwrites ! Thank you so much this one looks super fun!

Rules: List your OCs as “tens but” to give us a not at all comprehensive scope of their characters.

I have way more characters than this but these are the ones I have talked the most about and the five that have POV chapters thus far:

Emeren - he’s a ten but is probably going to kill his former laboratory family. Oops.

Jaith - he’s a ten but is very skilled in misdirection and lies. Also is probably hiding something.

Aleto - she’s a ten but is way too worried about what happens to her lab family. These people can’t look after themselves, guess it’s up to her.

Shraya - she’s a ten but is also a reigning champion in the anomaly arena in her district. Oh, was this supposed to be negative or something?

Lumir - he’s a ten but an alcoholic. Oh and he’s killed a lot of anomalies. Like a lot.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! A bit more of a craft question this week. How do you approach the events that happen off page? The secondary character's subplots, political machinations, character backstories etc. Is it important to your process to have them planned in detail or do you only address them when it affects the main plot?

Omg I’m so behind on these I’m so sorry ~

I like to know e v e r y t h i n g but at some point I have to tell myself to STOP or I will never write the actual story lol.

So - I might fill out a questionnaire or write a character sketch about the related thing but I try not to go *too* into detail for a couple of reasons; I like to keep it open-ended in case something changes in the future and, again, I’ll get super bogged down in the details and never move forward..

If it’s super interesting to me I might write it in my Upcoming Scenes doc that gets included in my overall word count so I don’t feel as though I’ve wasted time writing about secondary characters. I’ve already done this a lot with the secret anomaly ship. Omg are they fun to write and so cute 🥰

I do this way more iwth character subplots than any worldbuilding though.

I know we only just started following each other, but I had to say I love your art and character designs! It's so colorful and vivid, like something straight out of a webcomic!

Do you do art/writing-related tag games by chance?

Oh my gosh thank you so much!!! I hope to get a lot more art done this month!

I get tagged in a lot of writing tag games and I do like to do them, sometimes they get lost in my activity so it's easier for me to do them if they're ask-based; because then I have to answer the inbox ask, if that makes sense lol. I'm trying to get better at that - I also don't do a lot of tag games that involve actual lines of my WIP because most everything for Anomaly is very Rough Draft stage right now so I don't feel that it's very good yet lol. Maybe on the second draft I'll start doing those. I've never been tagged in an art-related tag game though! I'd be happy to give those a try.

Oh man okay UMMMM

In Layer Comet, the most common method of anomalies dying is from other anomalies’ powers or zenforcer attacks.

It is definitely not legal but anomalies are not well-protected after they incited the war ten years ago that marked them as dangerous and volatile, so no one is looking out for them :(

CHERRY - Describe a celebration!

Oooooo okay this is still in the works but after playing the Pokemon S&V DLC I got the idea for a masquerade type of festival (I love masquerades okay and I can make it work in this cyberpunk world) where everyone celebrates their own powers by making and wearing a mask that represents them. For example Jaith's would be a super bright golden mask to celebrate his light manipulation abilities.

I can't wait to write this into the story!

Well…

Remember that pre-lab escape Aleto is almost mute. She is so insecure, self-conscious, and afraid of everything that she likely won’t do much except hide in the corner. And then leave as soon as possible, preferably with a friend she trusts, like Emeren or Lumir.

Would love to know more about Jaith and Emeren's relationship lol. They sound so interesting

HI thank you so much for your question, I’m sorry it tooka while to answer I’ve been sick all week but I’ve been working on my answer on and off for days so here we gooooo ~

Jaith and Emeren are my favorites too, they are a perfectly dysfunctional boss-and-bodyguard type of dynamic, where one cares far more than the other about the relationship lol.

Most of the time it’s like this:

“Get DOWN!”

(Jaith’s face lol)

Emeren will literally do anything to save Jaith’s life. Jaith saved him from the laboratory, which Aleto and the others failed to do, so Emeren is 100% loyal to this arrogant mob boss flashy light guy

And then sometimes it’s like this:

Since Jaith is the one who built the respirator for Emeren, he also makes repairs to it and maintains it for him. After Emeren’s lungs were damaged by the scientists’ experiments, this rendered him completely useless, since his mutations rely on his breathing. Jaith fixed this for him so Emeren could be useful to him.

Most of the other anomalies in Solstice (Jaith’s gang) can see that Jaith is just using Emeren. Deep down, Emeren knows this too.

So their relationship is a little unhealthy and dysfunctional and a bit one-sided, but for now, it works for them. The reappearance of Emeren’s lab family (the anomalies who were in the lab with Emeren around four years ago, Aleto and Shraya and a few others I haven’t introduced yet) throws a wrench into everything - and that is where the story begins.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I am an ANGST WRITER and I love me some hurt/comfort but there has to been action/adventure in there too. So most of the time I say action/dramas.

My least favorite is romance! I very rarely even have romance as a subplot. Most of my couples are already together when the story starts.

schools (love me some dark academia/whatever, just has to be a school, idk why but writing schools really butters my biscuit)

chaotic areas under control by some tyrannical group (you'll see this in Anomaly)

fantasy lands (ugh I miss my fantasy story so much!) particularly that have a fun blend of made up cultures that each have their own vibes, distinctions, languages, relationship with magic, etc

Happy Storyteller Saturday! How do you approach thinking about your character's appearance? First thing you do? Just aesthetics? A vicarious exercise?

Happy happy happy STS! Thank you so much for the ask!

When designing characters’ appearance for Anomaly, the first thing I decide is what group of people they belong to in the story. Are they an anomaly? Are they an anomaly in one of the higher ranked or lower ranked gangs? Are they a civilian with no powers? Were they born higher up or lowborn? This determines so much about their appearance such as how many cybertech/body modifications they have.

If they are an anomaly, I decide first what gang they belong to, then their powers, then their character traits. I try to pick traits that no other character in the story has thus far.

Once all that is decided, THEN I started thinking about appearance. I make a Pinterest section and from my Faceclaims board pick a face that I feel best embodies the character. Then I choose aesthetic pictures representing their powers. I write a short description of them in their character bio and let them evolve as the story evolves.

And then eventually I draw them lol.

Purple Worldbuilding Ask Game

PLUM - what is the most common fruit?

Because Pyramid Rho is all synthetic and artificial, fruits are extremely rare! All food in Layer Comet is synthetic, but in the more affluent Layer Condor, the extremely rich have greenhouses that can grow the easier-to-grow fruits such as raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. From my cast of characters, Emeren and Rheoline were rich highborns from Layer Condor (but unfortunately both of them turned out to be anomalies), and they are the only ones who have ever tasted true fruit.

EGGPLANT - which character is most important to the world as a whole?

Hmmmm, I’m going to go with which group is important to the world as a whole, and that would be the Zenith Order - they are responsible for keeping the anomalies separate from the civilians in Layer Condor, making sure the anomalies stay in line, and organizing harvesting augmentations from the anomalies. They are not good, definitely, but important for maintaining Pyramid Rho’s status quo.

BERRY - makeup a minor worldbuilding detail on the spot!

Oh crap oh man ummmmmm a common dessert is a synthetic white goop whipped into something that sort of looks delicious of you squint, but isn’t if you know it’s made of tons of microplastics. It’s called Whisle and most of my main characters think it tastes like plastic.

Going to try and answer this for all of my main characters -

Emeren (post-laboratory arc) - definitely defensive. What do you mean he’s not doing his best a Jaith’s bodyguard?? He’s giving it all he has and Jaith hasn’t died so far, right? He would also probably retaliate with a bit of cruelty of his own.

Aleto (post-laboratory arc) - willing to listen and improve. As the new leader of what’s left of the laboratory anomalies, she knows she has room to be better, since she will never be as good as Emeren was.

Shraya - laughs. Yeah, right, she has room to improve? She’s already amazing. Borderline perfect.

Jaith - also will probably laugh. He is also perfect and makes perfect decisions and nothing will ever go horribly wrong.

Lumir (post-laboratory arc) - criticism? Yeah, I probably deserved that. I’ve done terrible things. I’d better go find my hidden whiskey stash and think about this.
