Okay, not (quite) anonymous any more, but still not (that) active yet. With all the recent discussion of episode 5 and the rooftop scene, I think I've yet to see analysis of 5 [4/4] 9:06-9:13, from when Pran says "We're not even friends" to when Pat says "That's right." Of course, we didn't know it on first viewing, but based on what we learn later from episode 12 [4/4] 12:58-13:54, what Pran says must have hurt. And we see it in Pat/Ohm's reaction. I'd love to see that deconstructed.

Hi @pandasmagorica! 😍 Sorry this reply is so late; I was struggling with my post about OS2 x BBS x ATOTS and also some work deadlines.

With regard to the Ep.5 rooftop, I must agree with you that Pran's comment "We're not even friends" must really have stung for Pat.

By this point he'd been totally swept away in the rush of his new-found feelings that he also knew were returned. But Pran, contrarian as ever, was vehemently denying the existence of closeness to his face. And to deny that they were even friends when they had actually been so close and affectionate behind the scenes before must have felt like a gut punch to Pat, who was laying himself so bare and vulnerable here.

For almost all of Ep.5 we watched as Pat sank deeper and deeper into the disorientating realization that he had somehow fallen in love with his supposed rival. And he must have been pushed so close to the brink of despair by the swell of these anguished, bottled emotions that he couldn't wait even a second longer than necessary to confess it all to Pran (which of course is quite in character for our open-hearted boy).

This was why he waited up for Pran down at the base of their block, drunk as he was, so as not to miss his return. And when he was prevented – by Wai's presence – from expressing all that was churning within him, of course he couldn't contain that pressure and it all erupted into a brawl.

But Pat on the rooftop is now showered and clearheaded, and once again focused on his task of confessing all to Pran.

Unfortunately, as before, Pran is unaware of Pat's true feelings and is expecting their usual jostling, competitive dynamic to be the framework of their exchange. And so Pran continues to toss barbs at Pat, thinking he'll find some way to lob them back as he'd always done before.

And in a sense he does, but Pat's energy is different now. For him it's not a game anymore and the usual teasing impishness that we saw so much of in preceding episodes (and at the start of Ep.5 too) is gone.

This scene is also a callback to (and a parallel with) Ep.3 [4/4] 6.09 – in the corridor there, Pran had been so moved by Pat's generosity and help with the bus‑stop that he decided to dial back on the rivalry and was wanting to take things to the next level.

This was the motivation behind his seemingly off-the-cuff "Have you eaten?" at Ep.3 [4/4] 7.20 – he was wanting to interact with Pat socially instead of as a competitor (see this write-up linked here for more analysis). Before this, the only other time we'd seen them at a meal together was at the wonton noodle stall (Ep.3 [1I4] 6.20), and it only happened by accident (and Pat soon turned it into a chopstick battle anyway) so I like to think Pran was wanting a romantic do-over in Ep.3 [4/4] by asking Pat out for a meal.

But there in the corridor Pat only seemed to want more of their usual relationship dynamic (more gameplay), and he signaled this with another of his bait-and-switch moves, lulling Pran with the return of his guitar and then saying "I just like to see your face… when you lose."

Here on the rooftop the tables have turned. In the corridor of Ep.3 [4/4] Pran was left resigned with Pat's unchanging focus on their rivalry (and yet maybe still relieved that they could continue their relationship, even if it was based on competition). But on the rooftop it's now Pat – all ready to bare his soul – who is thwarted and exasperated by Pran instead.

During the fight scene we already saw Pat getting annoyed at Pran (who was operating in their default mode of pretending to be bitter enemies). And he retaliated with a refusal to play along, turning snarky when Pran said "Why? Is it so hard to accept defeat?" at Ep.5 [4/4] 2.41. Pat's snide response "Defeated by that lousy song. Why would I feel anything?" landed like a slap too (though Pran couldn't have felt it, unlike Pat and us viewers who knew the truth behind his sarcasm). Because of course Pat had his heart torn to shreds when he finally understood that the song Just Friend? was really about Pran's unrequited love for him, and was now speaking to his feelings for Pran in return.

So on the rooftop Pat – perhaps annoyed at having to delay the confessing of his own truths – calls out the double-sidedness of Pran's comment and laces his response with more sarcasm and layers of unspoken meaning. His skewed, sardonic smile when he says "That's right" is a mix of sadness and derision, a colloid of contrasts ironically just like the relationship that they've always known – a forced mix of enmity and friendship, a combination of two opposites that will never truly meld.

If we're being generous, it's possible to read that Pran intended his "We're not even friends" to mean something like they're not allowed to be friends in the fullest sense of the word, in front of society and the world at large, even though they were always friends behind the scenes. But what Pat does is to take the literal meaning of this and flip it on its head.

They're both aware that their illicit friendship exists, but it's a friendship that dare not speak its name because of outside disapprobation. Pat's answer in the affirmative also snorts cynically, not just at Pran's surface denial, but also at their pitiless circumstances that don't allow them ever to be seen in front of others as anything besides bitter rivals.

And this is why he goes on to list why others might think they're not friends – in spite of the fact that (for all intents and purposes, except for how their relationship is presented to the world) – they actually are:

"How can we be friends when our parents despise one another?"

"How can we be friends if we live next door to each other yet can't even talk?"

"How can we be friends if we have to compete against one another in everything?"

But just like his sarcastic "That's right" and the cynicism of his mirthless smile, his words here are rhetorical, and are meant to highlight the opposite of what they seem to be saying – because his list is only made up of obstacles to friendship, but not reasons for enmity.

Their parents' mutual hostility, the ban on communicating with the boy next door, the enforced competition – these were constraints imposed on their friendship, but in themselves are no foundation or justification for any kind of animosity between them. And early on, little Pat and Pran found ways to get around the barriers and become firm friends in all but name, because there was never any justifiable reason for them not to be so.

Pat is calling Pran out here; he's telling Pran that he's just repeating what they'd been told since childhood, but the two of them, despite having drifted apart after Pran was sent away – they know better. And he's also calling for an end to the verbal gameplaying, and for them to face their truths.

Because after each rhetorical question is the silent, unspoken answer that BOTH know to be true:

"How can we be friends when our parents despise one another?" "But we ARE friends…"

"How can we be friends if we live next door to each other yet can't even talk?" "But we found a way around it…"

"How can we be friends if we have to compete against one another in everything?" "The competition was never a barrier to us ACTUALLY becoming friends…"

He's using rhetoric and sarcasm to illustrate that they weren't allowed to be friends and they've been conditioned not to call themselves that – but it doesn't change the truth about their friendship.

And I think Pran hears him loud and clear – despite what the world's been telling them all their lives, they are close and they have been friends, which is why there's a discernible softening on Pran's part.

I think Ohm did a fantastic job in Ep.5, heaving onto his shoulders the weighty stone that was also BBS's glowing heart, when it was Nanon doing all the heavy emotional lifting in the first four episodes. You can see what Pat is going through – but just in case you want further insight regarding his inner turmoil, BBS actually lets us in on a little more info.

Pat's audition as Riam in Ep.7 [4/4] 5.26 was also a play-by-play repetition of the Ep.5 rooftop scene, but Pat/Riam verbalizes his feelings a bit more directly, and adds further dimension to our understanding of Pat's motivations while on the rooftop.

Using Riam's voice, what he says in Ep.7 [4/4] cuts out all of his previous rhetoric, and instead speaks plainly of his weariness with the gameplay and of his willingness to give it up (repudiating his playful corridor self of Ep.3 [4/4]):

"I’m tired. Tired of pretending to hate you while your face has taken over my heart. Aren’t you tired too?... Let’s stop it. I don’t want to play this game anymore. I don’t want to lie to people anymore. You asked if I still wanted us to be friends. What if my answer is no? What do you say?"

Part of why Ep.5's rooftop scene hits so hard is not just because Pran walking away embodies the loss of a romantic story that could have been. It hits also because we see just how far battle-weary Pat has come, on a rollercoaster journey of grappling with emotions (over the course of just one episode) that Pran had taken years to integrate as part of his reality.

The loss is all the greater because we see how much it cost them to get to this point. For Pat it meant dismantling his worldview and lifelong sense of self as Pran's rival in every respect – and yet he was willing to cast it all aside, after recognizing the truth underlying his closeness to Pran.

As BBS is also an allegory for the lives of queer people, all the rumination around "friends who are not friends" here (also calling out to Pat's favorite among all of Pran's personally-scented tees) parallels how closeted LGBTQ+ relationships are often not allowed to speak their truth to wider society.

But while the allegorical message may speak to us intellectually, I think it gets drowned out by the molten magma at the searing core of this scene on the rooftop, which communicates directly – deafeningly – with the heart. All intellectual preoccupations aside, it's also just two young, would-be lovers stumbling through a conversation where so much is unknown and so much has yet to be said, trying to find the truth of their relationship in the maze of all the semantics – which is what many of us who have had to navigate young love must have experienced at some point.

Some of us get beyond the maze and fall into the truth behind the words straightaway. Others, like Pat and Pran, will have to take a little longer to get there. But as they ultimately demonstrate, it's always worth the journey when your erstwhile "friend" (or "enemy") turns out to be your soulmate instead. 💖

Thai QL Favorites Tag Game

Favorite Thai QL: Bad Buddy was my first and probably till date my fav. What a way to start. Very few BLs overall have lived up to the unreal standard that this show set, and no matter what all has happened IRL since the airing of the show, this show has a place in my heart that nothing is going to ever replace. It's the show that revived my love and passion for TV shows after years. This show (ep 5 4/4 👀) changed my brain chemistry, without exaggeration. P'Aof i'm chewing on your furniture until you pay for my therapy. [Other favs are MLC, ATOTS, UWMA, Between Us, MSP]

Favorite Pairing: I guess i'll talk about actor pairings but onscreen, not how they are offscreen. EarthMix is absolutely one of my favs, they bring a maturity, natural-ness, and intensity to their acting that I've rarely found in other GMMTV pairings. I'm also gonna mention FourthGem because they're the GMM young blood and I think they've got an incredible amount of potential. We've already seen their range in MLC and MSP, and I think they're going to be huge. I have a huge soft spot for BounPrem (but I may be biased lol), and this may be a lukewarm take but I really enjoyed BillySeng, I thought they had some incredible onscreen chemistry.

Most underrated actor: Oh jeez where do I start. Gotta mention Fourth - he's not really underrated but he's just starting out, but I can already see he's got the chops and with the right training and right directors he's absolutely Going Placed. Shout out to Fluke Natouch, that boy does emotional scenes like no one else. Special shoutout to Tonnam - he's supposed to be starring in his first BL as a main character this year, idk if that's still on schedule or not, but every character he's ever played so far has been a hit in my book. His comedic timing is unparalleled for me, it never fails to hit.

Favorite Character: How do I choose!! Pat Napat is so dear to me??? As is Ae from LBC???? Tutor from Why R U???? Team from Between Us?? I've got so many different little blorbos it's impossible to choose. They're all pocket sized to me. Making me choose is a crime.

Favorite Side Character: Idk why but the first one that comes to mind is View from Between Us. He's absolutely Little Bro, but he's also so sweet and genuine and full of love??? He's annoying bc all little brothers are genetically coded to be annoying but he's impossible not to love. His smile is healing. You can't take him away from me.

Favorite scene in a QL: Bad Buddy Ep 5 4/4. This was the scene that actually broke me. The lead up to the scene, the subtle but deliberate choices that both the characters made. Pat gritting himself to go talk to Pran bc if there's one thing he doesn't do it's avoid people and situations. Pran resigning himself to the conversation bc he can't avoid it any longer. Pat finally saying exactly how he's been feeling less than a business day after he had the realisation himself, bc the moment he feels something and decides it he has to act on it. The music swelling in the background. Pran realising that he's been projecting his fears onto Pat this entire time, that Pat has always feel differently about him too. Pran asking the question to break it all, wording in one way where he was expecting one kind of answer, not expecting that it would be interpreted in an entirely different way and would rock the foundation of their already teetering relationship. Pran asking if they want to be friends, because the alternative would be to be enemies. Pat hearing 'do you want to be only friends', and realising that that would never be enough for the both of them. Pat seeing that Pran is scared, and realising that he has to have courage enough for the both of them. Pat taking the deepest and shakiest breath of his life, swallowing down his fear and trepidation, voice trembling saying 'no'. This is the scariest thing that Pat has ever had to do, but how he'd rather do this than lose Pran again. Them both taking a step towards each other, because this is a decision not of one but of equals, mutual as they have always been. Pat treating this like his first kiss, like a relief of finally knowing the answer to a question that has long plagued him, like the start of something, going into it with utter joy and coming out of it with complete bliss, because the world finally makes sense. Pran treating this like his last kiss, like the end of everything they had ever been or ever could be, like he was going to milk this for everything it was worth because he was never going to get a chance to do this ever again, going into it with fear and desperation, and coming out of it with heartache and resignation, because they had lost everything they had and couldn't get it back. Pat crying tears of joy because he finally found what he was looking for, and Pran crying tears of pain because he got to experience for the first and last time what he would never be allowed to have but had longed for all of his life. Yeah I'm so normal about this show.

Favorite line in a QL: I mean. I literally said it all above, but yeah. 'If we're not enemies, could we be friends?' 'Do you want to be friends?' 'No.'

Most Anticipated QL (& why): I don't honestly know?? But I do wanna see the Thai remake of Cherry Magic, I'm interested in seeing how they're gonna treat it differently from the source show, esp since Thai shows have a tendency to bit more high heat and the original show was all about the tenderness of falling for someone because of their goodness.

Healthiest relationship in a QL: oooh i gotta go for TinnGun from MSP, they're just so lovable. Yes it's a highschool relationship but it was presented so sweetly without coming across as childish, and my boy Tinn is the ultimate green flag. Also even tho I'm not personally a SaifahZon fan (they're not my cup of tea) I think they're incredibly healthy.

Most toxic relationship in a QL: TharnType (i'm mostly looking at you Tharn), most of the KP pairings (the T in Theerapanyakuls stands for needs Therapy), early RainPhayu (i'm sorry but pigtail-pulling on the playground to show you like someone is very kindergarten behavior Phayu), LianKuea (go ahead girlbosses who gaslight and gatekeep).

Guilty pleasure series: I honestly don't know if anything I like counts as a guilty pleasure. Maybe SCOY?? Because I know there's a lot of people who don't like it and find it cringe but I think they're all kind of missing the point. I could write a mini-essay about this show too but i'll save that for another day.

Most underrated series: Ingredients (Baby Jeff!!), My Only 12% (It absolutely deserved more love and hype).

this is always a hard one so I'm gonna do one per country. Japan - At this moment, Kieta Hatsukoi. I've been rewatching it and I just adore them all. Aoki is chaos made perfect and Aida is just such a good human. Korea - Light On Me. It's perfect. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. it's a love triangle made well. Philipines - Gaya Sa Pelikula. Vlad is a great character, and I wanted to hug him several times during the show. Karl is at times hard to watch, because the boy is going through it, but that dance scene is sublime. Taiwan - hummm... I'm gonna go with We Best Love 1. This is one of my favourite couples as well. I love them and I love this show. Thailand - This one I'll choose purely on my gut when I first thought of the question. ATOTS. I adore Mix. His eyes just give me so much, it's a pleasure to watch him. And the whole environment of this show just feels like a warm blanket.

Slippy Rewatches: ATOTS, Episode 2

Next up for Friend Who Needs Recaps Right Now: ATOTS, Episode 2.

This is going to be extra-funny because I haven’t watched this show in about two years so I barely remember the set-up. But ALSO, this was my first Thai BL, so I had no idea how many tropes I was swimming in, which ought to make this really fun to come back to.

What I remember of ep 1 is basically: Tian, The Most Beautiful Boy In The World, is a spoiled rich brat with heart problems who gets into a car accident and has a heart transplant. But I don’t know where we left off. The “previously on” reminds me that the person he got the heart from was a volunteer teacher in a rural area of Thailand, and Tian decides he needs to go find and teach this volunteer teacher’s class to fulfill her wishes. And there he met Chief Phupha, our tsundere, bless him, and they stared at each other weirdly for a while.

AND NOW, episode 2:

We’re flashing back to how Tian got to be a teacher, i guess! He shows up at the foundation that sponsors the teachers, with Teacher Torfun’s lanyard in his hand. I am immediately losing my shit because I’m so much more immersed in the Thai BL cinematic universe than I was when I watched this, and have just realized that Torfun is Pearmai from “Be My Favorite”, and the head of the foundation plays dads in like three other shows I’ve watched. Oh, man. This is going to be an EXPERIENCE.

Tian rolls up with his application which reads "Hello, I would like to be a teacher in this specific rural village, my qualifications are that I am very pretty."

Foundation Head Guy recognizes his name and says kindly, "hey, rich boy, you are not going to want to live on the salary or in the lifestyle that rural volunteer teachers get, please go home and roll around on your bed of money or at least let us send you somewhere with running water. Don't be the jerk rich kid who burns our foundation's money and goodwill on going off to teach, fucking around with the lives of the local population, and coming home again a week later."

Tian: "Yes but have you SEEN how pretty I am? Also I am being really earnest about this."

Foundation Guy asks Tian what the most difficult thing in his life is, and before he can say, "I maybe killed someone and took her heart and it might have made me gay if I wasn’t already?” we smash cut into the credits. I forgot how cute these credits were! Fuck, I’m gonna end up rewatching this whole show

And now we’re back to the village, where Tian is trying and failing to get a signal on his cell phone. He gives up and gathers his towel to go explore his bathing situation, only to basically trip over the Chief perched outside his little cottage waiting to take him to the school.

Tian would like to take a bath, and Chief does a life-ruining little smirk and leads him away down the path. Tian brushes his teeth along the way to what he thinks is going to be his bath, and that's how he ends up at his new school, with a bath towel slung over his shoulder, still brushing his teeth, to meet his assorted youths.

The youths are five adorable moppets. Four of them are full of questions and one of them is asleep. (One of them is also wearing a shirt that says "Snatch: The Best Thing On Earth".) Tian hits up Ranger Yod to find out what the schedule is and if there's a lesson plan. Yod nominally thinks there should be lessons in the morning and play in the afternoon, but also thinks that it's Tian's first day so if he wants to just send everyone home now that's fine. Yod would be the teacher who shows movies all year long with only vague relation to the curriculum.

Tian makes a vague effort to start an animal-guessing game but Ayi, the kids' ringleader, apparently just leaves school when he's bored, and now he is bored So he gets up and leaves, with all the other kids following him. Which means that when Chief shows up again the schoolroom is just Tian, sulking because he hasn't had a bath and the kids have better things to do than play with him.

Chief glowers a little but actually takes pity on Tian and agrees to show him what his new bathing situation is going to be like.

Oh. Oh, man. I think we’re about to get to something I remember very fondly. Let’s GO.

Okay, so Chief leads Tian and his bath towel off to a waterfall-and-stream situation. Very picturesque.

Tian: So we don’t have bathtubs here?

Chief: Look, city boy, I can drive you to the city if you can’t hack bathing like a villager.

Tian: I’m fine, go away.

Chief: Conveniently, the other side of this river is a dangerous border where skirmishes happen so I am duty-bound to stand here and watch you bathe. In case ruffians try to kidnap you. While you’re naked.

Tian: FINE but can you turn AROUND while I wade into the water fully clothed?

Chief: FINE

Chief: immediately starts peeking at Tian and his wet clinging shirt situation as he wades into the quiet of the stream. It’s CUTE.

Chief turns away for a minute to get a product-placement drink and when he turns back, Tian is MISSING. Because he is HIDING because he is a BRAT. The upshot of this is that Chief leaps in to save him and ends up shirtless and wet and cranky about how into brat-taming he is.

And this? This moment here? This was when I simultaneously met Earth Pirapat’s tattoos, and Thai BL’s love of lingering product-placement shots where beautiful shirtless men suck down cool beverages in loving close-up while we watch their throats bob. This moment changed my life, I think. JFC. Who allowed it.

This moment is also changing Tian’s life, he is doing the MOST minx-y little lowered-eyelashes side-eye at Chief’s nipples.

Presumably he did not immediately blow the Chief, but we will never know because we cut back to them arriving back at Tian’s cottage, where Yod has brought lunch. Yod is like, funny that you went swimming, when you have your own little outhouse and bathing situation out back, I just asked the villagers to bring you a full water jar and everything so you can bucket-bathe yourself!

Tian: Oh my god I hate the Chief.

Chief: gives Tian the WORST little smirk.

Oh my god, I forgot what a little shit he secretly is.

Tian goes in and changes and we get a look at his gnarly chest scar while he stares pensively in the mirror for a while and, oh, THAT’S why he went into the stream fully clothed, I forgot he’s hiding his cardiac patient situation. What a terrible idea, Tian. TELL SOMEONE.

It’s time to meet the village chief! His name is Khama or maybe his title is Khama? Anyway, he’s nice to Tian but also wonders why Torfun didn’t come back?

Chief: Torfun’s…um. Busy? Definitely not dead. Ha ha ha.

Tian, side-eyeing Chief: Yeah, I too know nothing about Torfun’s hypothetical death.

Khama is genial and delightful, and his wife has prepared a huge meal to welcome Tian, including a very special dish of pig brain. Everyone including Chief is leaning in real close to watch Tian try it. This is clearly a fun thing they do to city people, feeding them spicy pig brain to see if they can be cool or will freak out.

What is this Wang-Yibo-ass facial expression on the Chief?

Tian is like, “awesome, excellent pig brain, thank you!” and then proceeds to have a flashback to his transplant doctor explaining that to avoid rejection of his new heart he should live in hygienic places and not eat spicy or unusual foods, while Khama explains the ten different spicy dishes on the table.

It’s fine, this is fine. I’m not at all worried about Tian’s heart, as Chief basically eggs him on to prove he can eat spicy food. Tian, TELL SOMEONE, Chief is a brat too but he wouldn’t try to actually KILL YOU if he knew your whole deal.

Khama also mentions that his song Longtae is about Tian’s age and is studying in the city, but will be back to visit this weekend. Tian wants to see the cliff nearby for no particular reason (it’s because he read about it in Torfun’s journal) and Khama is like, yeah, my son can be your tour guide! But if you want to go before then, take Chief, because it’s too dangerous to go alone.

Tian says he wouldn’t want to bother such a busy and important guy, and Tian and Chief hate-fuck each other with their eyes for a while. Khama eats more spicy pork. He’s having such a good time, I love him.

Later at night, Chief walks Tian home and discovers that the city boy doesn’t know about mosquito netting and got fully destroyed by mosquitos. So now it’s time for a Sexy Mosquito Netting scene where Chief fully kabedons Tian to show him how to put up the netting. Love it, zero notes.

And then, because we are still in the pulling-each-other’s-pigtails stage of this relationship, Chief takes the whole thing down, tells Tian to do it himself to get practice, warns him about ghosts, and fucks off back to his base. Tian gets the net up, but then he has to go use the outhouse while he’s terrified of ghosts, poor city boy.

Meanwhile back at the base, Chief has pulled out a wooden flute, had a flashback to Torfun giving it to him, and now he is staring mournfully into the fire while tootling a tune on the flute. My recollection is that when I first watched this with friend Hoyden, I started howling because I was having a full Lan Xichen flashback, but she had not yet watched The Untamed and just thought I had completely lost my mind.

Anyway: Chief’s having a real Moment here.

The next morning Yod picks Tian up to take him to class - apparently that’s usually his job, Chief just did it yesterday as a special First Day of School thing. They detour through the fields and learn that the village’s chief economic engines are growing tea and sewing. Tian asks him about the cliff too because he is just going to be Extremely Normal about the cliff, and Yod is like, yeah, it’s over there, but if you take the wrong turn you end up in Ghost Hill. Also very normal. If you end up in Ghost Hill without doing the right rituals, the ghosts kill you. So again the takeaway is: please wait for an escort to the cliff.

And now we meet another ranger, Rang, who’s happy to do some introductions and some gossip. Apparently Yod and Rang both know that Torfun died, but Chief told them not to tell the villagers. They are standing a few feet away from the villagers during this conversation. The rangers are not stealthy.

Then we go to school, where Tian is finding out the kids are more advanced than he expected - he was going to teach them letters, but Torfun already taught them letters. And numbers. The kids are bored as shit.

Tian, desperate: Hey, okay, but did Torfun ever take you on a FIELD TRIP? To the WATERFALL that’s like TWO MINUTES FROM A DANGEROUS BORDER?

Rang and Yod know this is a terrible idea and Rang peaces the fuck out to go find Chief and let him know Tian is going rogue.

Chief is off in the city meanwhile, meeting with his doctor who is also his friend. Did we meet this character in episode 1 or is this the first time we meet him? I remember liking this character, I think.

Doctor Friend: Hey so I heard your new teacher is a hot twink and you’ve been paying him a lot of attention.

Chief: LOOK he is a MENACE and I am DOING MY JOB.

Doctor Friend: Okay SURE. Now I am going to talk about how Torfun was in love with you, so you can get weird and sad.

Chief: *soulful eyes*

Tian is taking the kids on a nature walk and has finally found something they don’t know - how to name colors in English. So they’re having a good time learning English words for things, while Yod panics and flails about how Chief is going to murder him for this.

It’s all sort of nice, until Yod gets called back to base right as the kids are clamoring to be allowed to swim in the river.

Tian: This will be fine.

Yod: Will it?

Tian: Absolutely, go back to base, I got this.

Tian does not got this. Everyone splashes around and has fun for a while and then OOPS one of the kids (Kalae) is drowning. Which, let us note, Tian fails to even notice until one of the other kids is like, hey, is that, uh, is that what’s supposed to be happening?

Tian pulls Kalae out of the water and is just starting to try to figure out how to revive him when Chief and Yod arrive with Doctor Friend. Kalae is quickly saved and hustled off to the med center to recover. Doctor Friend pulls Chief off to the side to be like, okay, kid’s saved, now go tend to the twink teacher, he looked absolutely devastated.

Chief: Well maybe he shouldn’t have LET A CHILD DROWN.

Doctor Friend: You have a point, but he’s a brand-new teacher and he’s trying, please don’t actually murder him.

So Chief storms off to Tian’s place to yell at him about how he can’t just show up and be careless with these children’s lives and education as some sort of holiday from his life. He’s right, and Tian knows it, and Tian heads inside and starts to pack to leave.

But Doctor Friend may have done some good work here, because Chief rolls his eyes and takes a deep breath and is like, okay, but actually don’t be a huge baby and walk out on them either.

Tian reaches out to pack Torfun’s lanyard and now we’re back to the flashback at the beginning, where he was asked what his most difficult experience was. Apparently his answer was “I almost died, but now I have a second chance and I want to use it to do something for others.”

Foundation Guy told him to remember the way he feels and come back to it when he’s feeling discouraged by hard experiences. Which Tian does, and decides that he WILL stay and finish out his term.

Chief has about six face emotion journeys about his complicated feelings about this terrible beautiful twink, and then is like well OKAY then. But please stop DROWNING CHILDREN. And then they stare at each other intensely for a while as we go to credits.

And then post-credit scene!

We’re back to Tian and Chief walking home after the visit to Khama, and Chief pulls a huge bag of instant noodles out of his rucksack so Tian won’t actually starve.

Chief: You know how to make a fire and boil water, right?

Tian: …….

So then Chief makes some noodles for Tian, who pretends he’s not hungry, but then eats them anyway, and Chief makes the satisfied eyes of someone whose caretaking kink has just been activated. And then scolds him into saying thank you properly to an older man who has done something nice for him and, woof, yeah, there are some cultural/language layers there I didn’t get at first watch.

And then they just stare at each other for a while in beautiful flickering firelight, and yeah. Fuck. I have to rewatch the rest of this show now. Fuck.

But favorite ending... I would say A Tale Of Thousand Stars and its Our Skyy 2 storyline. I shed some tears at the end and still think the proposal was the perfect ending for these two! Even without the Our Skyy 2story would Atots one of my favorite ending. I love this series to death and the ending was 👌

I loved the ATOTS and Bad Buddy crossover. Even just from a personality conflict standpoint alone, all the different dynamics are delicious to me.

Like in Bad Buddy, the whole deal is the connection and conflict between Pat (ESTP) who is loud, high energy, spontaneous, rough around the edges, and somewhere on the continuum between lovably charismatic and obnoxiously annoying depending on who you ask-- vs Pran (ISTJ) who is more calm, organized, cautious, fussy, diligent, and studious.

ESTPs like Pat are lead by Se (extraverted sensing) which focuses on the joy of gathering new sensory experiences and getting out there, getting their hands dirty. They feel restricted by planning and prefer to just go for it and figure things out as they go. Sometimes that thing they figure out by jumping right on in is that there are leeches everywhere.

ISTJs like Pran are lead by Si (introverted sensing) which likes to steadily acquire sensory experiences in a more deliberate way and compare them to past similar experiences. They have more fun when they have a game plan and have some idea of what to expect. An impromptu hike through the wilderness at night is probably not their pick.

Pat and Pran have some similarities in that they're both competitive, both loyal friends, both not very open with their own feelings, both like to address problems head on, both are easily annoyed and aren’t afraid to get loud in an argument.

Though they're both sensors rather than intuitives and thinkers rather than feelers, the way they go about everything is different. Their cognitive functions are all in the same order of priority but one is introverted while the other is extraverted. Pat has Se Ti Fe Ni while Pran has Si Te Fi Ne.

With Tale of 1000 Stars, we have Phupa (ESTJ) who is rigid, stern, dependable, active, and likes to stuff his feelings way deep down and pretend they don't exist vs Tian (ENFP) who is open-minded, curious, lively, a free spirit, and likes to go on spontaneous adventures but tends to be under prepared for them.

Phupa and Tian are both slightly more extraverted than introverted (but neither are as crazy outgoing as Pat). They outwardly seem more like opposites because their priorities for taking in information and making decisions are mismatched. As an intuitive feeler, Tian goes by what feels right or wrong and trusts his gut (even if it doesn't make sense to others) while Phupa defaults to going by the standard procedure or the logical consensus (even when his heart wants him to do something else).

Phupa is lead by Te (extraverted thinking) so his focus is on efficiency. He likes taking the lead to fix problems, protecting his loved ones, and he takes pride in doing things himself to make sure things get done the right way. He also has a ton of Si like Pran (who himself uses a lot of Te too) but I do think Phupha uses Te more. Despite not being particularly extraverted, him favoring Te over Si is what made me lean ESTJ over ISTJ. Also, as a side effect of his emotional constipation, he tends to project.

Who is the stubborn one again?

Tian is lead by Ne (extraverted intuition) so he gets excited by different possibilities and perspectives. Unlike with Pat's Se, Ne doesn't necessarily have to go out and actually do all of the things. Ne users like daydreaming and putting themselves in others' shoes. With Torfun, Tian went all out because his secondary function, Fi (introverted feeling) helped him feel a deep connection through her diary and motivated him to do something positive in her memory. Although they prefer to focus on the big picture, sometimes they can be careless with details and get themselves into totally avoidable predicaments.

Tian and Phupa have all the same cognitive functions. The order isn't quite opposite yet it isn't the same either. Tian favors Ne Fi Te Si while Phupha uses Te Si Ne Fi. Their strengths and weaknesses match well when they work together. Tian helps Phupa by adding some variety to his life and getting him more in touch with his feelings while Phupa helps Tian by being a source of stability and practicality.

Tian and Pran also have all the same functions but the order is exactly opposite. They had a little conflict due to Tian’s poor planning/ getting them lost but tbh maybe some of that is on you for following a drunk man and a child into the jungle, Pran. Both prefer to avoid conflict but stepping on their morals is a surefire way to get them pissed off.

Phupa and Pat have all different functions and different priorities. Neither shies away from a fight or a challenge. Both have a protective side that can turn scary. Both like to get things done and stay busy. At first Phupa sees Pat as reckless, obnoxious, and ridiculous kid. Pat sees Phupa as an overly serious hottie, probably in part because he can tell it makes Phupa short circuit a little bit to be flirted with in such an open and playful way and Pat likes to stir the pot.

I’m glad the play saw Pat as Tian and Pran as Phupa because they are far more similar to each other with those pairs.

Tian and Pat are both the odd man out in a way. Tian is the only NF in the group of STs and yet Pat is the only one that uses Se Ti Fe or Ni. Both are extraverted perceivers and both are friendly, positive, giving, usually easy going, like to improvise, and don’t like following the rules exactly as they are written. They both put on a show with dramatic sulking when slighted but forgive easily.

Meanwhile, Phupa and Pran can easily be differentiated by their preferred habitats. Mountain man, Pran is not. Both believe rules exist for a reason and prefer to follow or enforce them. They can both be overly critical and harsh, sometimes unintentionally. They both seem cold on the outside but they are more sensitive than they let on and can hold a grudge. Both can get a bit bossy. They both have to try to pull their partners back down to earth sometimes. They prefer to use their Ne to stir up possibilities of everything that could possibly go wrong. Both are great at planning, problem solving, and can be depended on.

Anyway, that was a lot to say I liked the interactions and I’m glad they all kinda helped each other. The last episode warmed my soul and gave me everything I wanted.

Gravity Falls 10th Anniversary List O’ Favorite Things:

OK, Let’s GO! @gf10yearslaterzine, thanks for the questions/prompts!

1. Favorite Character:

At first, it was:

I started watching shortly after NWHS aired (with no knowledge of the emotions train that would hit when I got to that episode) because I’d seen a few people talking about how funny, cute, and smart Gravity Falls was and instantly liked the girl who made a light-up sweater. Instead of marathoning it, I saved it to watch an episode every so often as a fun pick-me-up for after watching more dramatic/sad/emotional things and eventually caught up right around when ATOTS aired.

Then this happened:

And Ford became my favorite and the show became a hyperfixation. This nerd who survived thirty years of what drove Fiddleford to erase his memory from a few seconds of exposure and who wrote things like Trust No One, who shoots first and asks questions later, and who is so full of trauma just... Played happily along with Giggle Time Bouncy Boots. He was still so passionate for the things he loved, still ready to be silly, just wanted to have a friend because he’d felt alone for so long, and was still trying to do good for the world despite everything. He had his flaws and misconceptions but ultimately, this nerd was doing the best he could with what he had.

Also, I’ve written about this before but it meant a lot, personally, to see his character type allowed to be one of the heroes where most media would villainize someone like him.

We get to see the family work together, Weird Al is there, Grenda gets to weaponize an armchair, and we get to see who Ford is now, not from the past, not from the journal, and not fresh out of the nightmare realm. Bonus points for Stan apologizing to Dipper for making fun of him. I feel like that was a huge character growth moment for him and more reason to love his character too.

6. Funniest Joke:

Oh man. I’m not sure what to pick here. There’s the classic ones that became memes, of course, but there are also things like Dipper’s internet history and Mabel and the leaf blower.

Hmm. I’m going to go with basically the entire premise of this:

Getting bored while falling in the bottomless pit.

It’s personally hilarious because on a trip in 2010, a few friends and I saw a well on the top of a mountain and wondered how deep that would have to be if there wasn’t a spring or something. That led to the idea of “at what point do you stop screaming and get hungry or bored or need to sleep when falling into a bottomless pit.” So this episode was basically our thoughts on it.

7. Favorite Game/Book/Merch:

Oof another tough one because, while Journal 3 is probably my favorite, I want to give a shout out to:

I love that it gave us more stories. We got more Pacifica development, creepy faceless Mabel, a post-Weirdmageddon Stan and Ford adventure with bonus Mabel in the multiverse, a smol Stans adventure, and *gestures to all of Comix Up. I mean, how could you not love some Dipper and Pacifica bonding, Stan finding out that Ford is an interdimensional criminal, Baby Stan and Ford bonding, and almost the entire cast hilariously stuck in anime schoolgirl uniforms and thrown into various other comic book personas.

8. Favorite Song:

Because that whole karaoke thing was adorable. And this actually leads into...

9. Favorite Quote:

“Karaoke is not about sounding good, it's about sounding terrible, TOGETHER.”

The sentiment is applicable to so many things. It’s not about being good or perfect, it’s about throwing expectations and self-consciousness out the window to have honest fun with the people you love.

10. A Special Memory or Moment About Gravity Falls:

Meeting so many incredible people through the fandom; People I’m friends offline with now and who I still chat with about life. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life getting to talk to so many awesome people, see your creative content, and to create my own (This show made me start drawing again and I’ve gotten hundreds of thousands of words in writing practice thanks to writing fics! Plus cosplaying and getting to meet other cosplayers! So much fun!). Thank you to everyone who helped make this show possible!
