Eurovision 2023: #18
Tumblr media
18. AUSTRIA Teya & Salena - "Who the hell is Edgar?" 15th place
youtube
Decade ranking: 51/116 [Above Ronela, below Jeangu]
OOOOOH MIO PADRE, I'VE GOTTA ROAST ME SOME BARBIES, ooooooooooh no.
Tumblr media
It does NOT pay to be funny, sadly. Yeah, I wish I didn't have to go there, but sometimes the stars just don't align. With Loreen and Pasha being reunited and the year generally being mediocre, Liverpool 2023 already had enough parallels with Baku 2012. The "preshow obsession has a disappointing live" part I could have done without.
Like seriously. Was there ever a more slam-dunk end of contest favourite for me than TeyaLena? (well other than You Know Who, but we'll get there). My recent faves were Think About Things, Shum and In Corpore Sano. All uptempo, all enjoyable, all secretly very clever entries, eating and mothering (or in Daði's case brothering) as THE act on everyone's lips as the dust settled. Edgar was one of two entries who could have been The One for this year!!! But as Poe Poe Poe became Poo Poo Poo I'm forced to pack up my praise pen and bring out my critical analysis quill :-/
Fortunately, like the ladies, I am such a good writer, so enjoy this lengthy review, which is more like a vivisection:
ON THE FLAWS OF 'WHO THE HELL IS EDGAR?'
Tumblr media
The first instinct would be to say that the song was impossible to bring, but I don't buy into that logic. "Edgar" was great, a vision, and absolute fucking BANGER. That's the hill, I'll die on. Despite the flaws of its live, I will always cherish it as a song.
Granted, the song was a lot of things at once. That's what made it both iconic and live liability. You try to explain to a layman casual audience member what Edgar is about. How it satirizes the music industry. How self-deprecating it is. What an API is. What an A&R is. What the 0.003 stands for. Now do that in the THIRTY SECONDS TIME FRAME it takes for the video teaser to play. You can't. You can be the best commentator or the most eloquent eurovision-obsessed guncle. Also, you're making me think with your words. Thinking bad. ME WANT ENJOY SHOW. ME WANT GOOD TIME, NO THINK.
Tumblr media
So, there's two approaches you can take here, if you play to win.
The first by embracing the campness and going full ham, which how the televote countries would handle it. Your Moldovas, Ukraines, Finlands, Serbias, Norways. Hand Edgar over to one of them, and TeyaLena would start bent over a laptop or typewriter, harrassed by ravens or men in Edgar Allen Poe costumes, who would so a possessed zombie dance while TeyaLena try to escape the clutches.
Tumblr media
Naturally, such an act requires less effort from the performers and could be seen as an easy cop-out by juries (die, juries!) and result in a loss of points and well, Austria don't play that way. Austria don't have a built in televote base and feel they are better off playing for the same juries that would normally reject an Edgar.
So instead they went for option two: embrace the hyperpop and try to build momentum off its hyperactivity. Fair enough, that's less interesting and safe, but a valid choice that can result in a very good time.
On this occasion though, it was a MISTAKE.
Tumblr media
The best part about Edgar was the combination of dumb hyperpop memes with clever satire, and the staging ignored the latter completely. It showed Edgar Allan Poe TWICE, and then spliced in the Spotify reference in the background without context. That was all the act did with the satire. They should have named this song "Where the hell is Edgar?". The vague references only work when the entire audience is already in on the joke, otherwise it's a three mins of braincell murder. If a pleb tuned in blind (over 75% of the audience), tough luck on them for trying to make sense of it all. SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED ESC ON TIKTOK!!!.
Bottom line: THE STAGING WAS PEDANTIC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thematic acts can alleviate that problem. Think Konstrakta's spa tableau vivant, Katryna's tron aureole, the presence of Gagnamagnið on the stage alongside Daði Freyr. This year we had Vesna's hexaplet choreography, Käärijä's ballroom dancers, Loreen's panini press, Gustaph's motivational graphics, even Alika's fucking self-playing piano applies to this principle. All of these did well, the competent ones with juries, the camp ones with the tv. Intuitive but thematically fitting visual cues that instinctively get the vibe across without requiring the audience to ponder it too deeply (or become a parody, I SEE YOU, France.) that's what effecive staging is about. Now compare the above good stagings to what Austria came up with: Four dancers in Samanta Tina garb, some more created by the LEDs in the background, and a VERY basic choreography. This is not a just simplification but a dumbing down. Every visual cue comes across as nonsensical, because nothing quite ties it together with the music. If only the song itself had provided us with a clear visual reference point, huh?
Of course, a dumbed down staging concept could still yield a good result despite itself if the live was teeming with energy and bounced off in every direction to match the music. Folks would be voting based on pure performance skill and nothing else. After all, Ewnicorn bluffed its way into third on that very principle. Sadly, neither Teya nor Salena were versed in the art of singing and dancing at the same time.
So ultimately, you're given this awkward performance where Teya acted really well and produced delectable facial expressions - I mean who doesn't love THIS:
Tumblr media
-but failed to harmonize with Salena, while Salena hit most of her notes but clearly struggled with the Dietmann's simplistic, toddler-like choreography, like a Leila Jane or Mirud on stilts. Nice that they complimented each others weaknesses by showcasing opposite talents, but if you wanna do well just get yourself a girl who can do both.
Tumblr media
And there we have it, Teya and Salena. High Risk, High Reward usually plays out for the better, but this is one such occasion where the high risk was avoided and the just reward was a disappointing score on the middle of the scoreboard. Such is the price of not embracing your queer-coded campness in Eurovision. We have landed in mild-like hell, just like Nina Zilli and Jonsi and all the others that I wish I could love more, but sadly did not live up to their initial hype. That too is life. Onward to better things, and things will surely get good as we move forward, right?
THE RANKING

Eurovision 2023
Hoo boy what a contest we had this year! Germany perfectly predicted the mood with their song title "Blood & Glitter"; first it was the latter and after the announcement of the winner it has been the former. Sweden won with a very professional and totally bland performance with a landslide of jury votes that were basically impossible to beat with audience votes... Which was suspiciously convenient considering 2024 will be an ABBA anniversary year. Watchers have been quite upset, and the most upset of them all have been Finnish people, because for the first time since Lordi our performance was hugely loved all around the world! What did we send to the contest then? Well...
Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha | Finland
We sent a green gremlin who was pretty much the exact opposite of everything Sweden represented. Käärijä was pretty much an unknown artist before this, he sang in his native language, his show was absolutely bonkers and the song was very non-traditional for Eurovision. And he very much won over audience's hearts despite placing second in the actual contest! I personally have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the song, but boy would've I still preferred it to win over that world's most calculated entry Sweden sent to compete.
Sudden Lights - Aijā | Latvia
Moving on to the entries I myself liked the best. I had a pretty good year as only one of my faves, Latvia, was dropped out in the semi-finals. Their song was a really nice mix of slower and more energetic parts, but maybe what costed them their place in the finals was the beginning, which was in my opinion the weakest part of the song.
Alessandra - Queen of Kings | Norway
Norway's song was generally well liked in Finland and I was pretty fond of it, too. The viking-like sea shanty vibes were just amazing!
Teya & Salena - Who The Hell Is Edgar? | Austria
This year there were several wacky songs and shows and many of them even hid an important message into their music. I liked pretty much all of them, but my favorite was Austria's criticism of the measly sums of money creative people often get from their work.
Alika - Bridges | Estonia
Melancholic songs are a difficult genre in Eurovision, as it's really hard to grasp the audience's attention with them when many other shows are full of pyrotechnics and lights and flashy colors. But despite all that I really adored Estonia's wistful song and their self-playing piano!
Voyager - Promise | Australia
There were also a few rock entries in the contest and it was pretty difficult to choose which one I liked better, Germany or Australia, but in the end I chose the latter. It's a real shame (and in my opinion weird, too) that neither of them got much points in the finals.
Pasha Parfeni - Soarele şi Luna | Moldova
While rock music is pretty common in the contest by this point, what I never expected was that "weird forest rave" was also going to be a genre that we are going to return several times to! I am not complaining though, as I absolutely loved Moldova's contribution to the collection. It was definitely one of my favorites from this year.
Luke Black - Samo Mi Se Spava | Serbia
My number on fave this time around came from Serbia. To me it had it all: song that sounded haunting and original, really interesting game-like show elements and extremely relatable lyrics. The song was basically about "the world is burning and I just wish I could sleep forever" and like yeah, me too Serbia, me too.

You know I think so much about the televotes. There’s always so many numbers that you THINK would get more points, but then they don’t. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that people only vote for the ones they want to win.
Austria for example, had an incredibly catchy song this year and was well liked, but I also think a lot of us didn’t think of it as a ”winner” song. And thus, not as many voted for it. Thus, they ended up getting only 16 points, and many of us wondering how they could POSSIBLY get so low when they deserved more.
It can also be that, you know, voting costs money. It’s not a LOT of money, but it’s still money. So maybe some people just save their money by only voting for one entry, or not vote at all.
There can only be one winner of Eurovision, but you also want your faves to get good points. I myself voted for Finland, Norway, Austria and Croatia. Only two of them I knew had bigger odds at winning, but I wanted the other two to at least get as good as a placement as possible. I also usually don’t vote for so many of them, but I have not voted for several years and I always got bummed when songs I liked got so few votes. So this year I decided to just go with it and do what I could.
Then there’s also the fact that people with a completely different taste in music has as much power in voting as you do. So there’s people who did not like Austria’s song for example, there’s people who thought Finland’s song was too loud and annoying, there’s people disliking every song that you loved. (My mom for example, thought both Austria and Finland’s songs were very annoying and did not understand why anyone would like them. But she did like Denmark’s song…)
And there’s an age difference too. Remember, people who are 12 and people who are 45 have as much power in the voting as you do.
There’s a bunch of different reasons to why something can get a too high or too low televote score, and while the jury definitely is our main enemy, we can’t trust each other either all the time.

When I 1st joined social media (almost like 10 years ago) we were here for fun, to escape "real life" and share our love for certain things and people. But for the past 2-3 years the social platform got soooooo toxic !!
Twitter is by far the worst, they hate on EVERYTHING, "cancel" people for little things that happened 10 years ago, because people apparently can't make mistakes when they are young and can’t change. They get offended over everything, if you have a different opinion than the the rest, you're immediately hated on.
I found ski jumping family on tumblr and there was no hate. Fans just shared their love for sport and jumpers. No matter who won, there were happy posts, there was no hate for jumpers. Of course everyone has a different taste and opinion, it's normal that everyone posted about their fav jumpers - but there was no hate. What I love about this fandom is that people don't just support their national team, but many others, it's an international love.
It was so refreshing to come from twitter to this lovely family on tumblr. But like all the other socials, this one started to get toxic too. I've seen so many posts talking about "taking a break from the fandom"... Yes you can write your own opinion! Yes the competitions are usually not fair for everyone, because of the wind conditions! The judges give better points to jumpers that jump better in the season than to the ones that are not so good that season. But all these things have nothing to do with jumpers!! They don't make the rules! They don't bribe judges or the FIS!! I don't know how much money do you think ski jumping teams have, but trust me it's not a lot!! The only ones I think that actually have the most money are Norway and Germany (because of all the wins in competitions and ski jumping schools at home...). But even they probably don't "throw money away". The rest don't have so much money. They need to pay for equipment, trainings, travels...for the whole year, not just winter season!! They don't have the money to bribe judges/FIS!! This isn't football, basketball, hockey or a big sport where A LOT of money is being transferred around - too much money if you ask me. The jumpers have a 2nd job next to jumping or they still go to school.
I get it you're mad when your fav doesn't win and of course you can share your opinion about it. But don't hate on the jumper that won. Don't make other fans bad about themselves for being happy that their fav has won or is on the podium. Or write about it and just don't tag jumping and jumpers under it.
My example: I don't like Kraft (I won't go into details, everyone has a different opinion on people) and I just don't care about the Austrian team in general - I'm in love with Gregor and I miss Fettner, I'm happy when certain jumpers do well, but that's where it ends, I just don't care about them, like I do for other teams. That's why I simply don't post about them or reblog stuff about them. When Kraft was winning I wasn't happy about it, because I wanted my faves to win. But did I post hate for him? No. Did I blame him my favs were losing? No. Was I saying how the competitions were unfair or that he didn't deserve the win? No. I just simply ignored posts about him and focused on my fav jumpers! The thing is: if the jumper wins that means he was good that day. He won for a reason. I could never say that he won just because he is Kraft and judges love him. He won because he's a great jumper. You just can't deny someone is good.
This season germans, Halvor and polish jumpers are on top. and lately Anže !! :) That's just how it is this season. They are in a good form, they usually have the best jumps and they deserve the win/podium. Germany, Norway, Poland and Austria are usually on top, they simply have the best jumpers and the majority of fans support these team. But look at Mackenzie this season !!! He's not the 31st anymore, he's actually in 2nd round!! :) Slovenia is getting their shit together. Japan was great for 2 seasons, this year they are not so good. Certain countries actually qualified this season for the 1st time!! This sport is so unpredictable. At the beginning of the season you honestly can't predict who will win the overall or even be in top 3 or top 10 at the end of the season.
Yeah I know...everytime I post something on tumblr lately, it's just these big rants about the fandom....But it's so tiring coming here on the tag and seeing "drama" instead of pictures and gifs and happines.
And please don't look at this as a hate post for austrinas/Kraft, I just wanted to show an example and this is the one I relate to. I know a lot of people don't like Germans, Poles and Slovenes here on tumblr and I don't judge them for it. You can't forse people to like something/someone. Just don't talk about people you dislike maybe?? Idk...I still don't understand how someone can spend their free time hating on someone online...I get it when 12 year old fangirls do it, but when you're over 16 or even 20+ and you still hate on people instead of just focusing on things you like...that's just weird...you need to get a life or start focusing on things that actually matter in life. It's a goddamn sport!! Your life doesn't depend on it. Yeah it relaxes you and makes you happy, but your life won't end if your fav won't win!!!
Anyway...if you've read my whole essay...I'm so sorry 😂 😂

The Post-Eurovision ranking and comments from an American that nobody asked for:
1. Switzerland 🇨🇭 Gjon’s Tears - Tout l’univers: I absolutely was enamored by this song, its artistry, and the artist. He can really sing and one of my early favorites from this year. So happy for him to get in the top 3 bc it was well deserved. 100/10
2. Italy 🇮🇹 Måneskin - Zitti e Buoni: Deserved winners. As queer as you can get and I am here for it. Another early favorite of mine constantly fighting with Switzerland for the top spot. 100/10
3. Iceland 🇮🇸 Dadi og Gagnamagnid - 10 Years: A beautiful song dedicated to his wife and deserved Top 5 for sure. Last year’s song would have won hands down so I’m bummed he couldn’t win the first one for Iceland but brilliant song and I hope the group stays together to produce more music. 99/10
4. Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Victoria - Growing Up Is Getting Old: Eurovision fandom will forever say Imaginary Friend or Ugly Cry was the better song to send, but I don’t think they would have won the contest either. This year was strong, and I personally think Growing Up was a perfect choice from Victoria. It deserved top 10 so I was pissed that it came 11th on the night and received so few televotes. 97/10
5. Ukraine 🇺🇦 Go_A - SHUM: To all y’all who said this wouldn’t qualify when the new version came out, eat those words hun. This was a masterpiece, and the live performances just elevated it further. Honestly, Kateryna could step on me, and I would let her. Who doesn’t love an ethnic modern fusion rave? 95/10
6. Serbia 🇷🇸 Hurricane - Loco Loco: I honestly have to say when it came out, it was never breaking my top 20, but here we are. This group of gals is amazing. The choreo, hairography, and the still great vocals won my gay ass over. They served and deserved top 10 in my eye. 90/10
7. Greece 🇬🇷 Stefania - Last Dance: Much like Serbia, I kinda dismissed this as a top 10 song at first, but after many listens and then the live shows, it was one of the best songs this year. Last year’s song was nowhere near a qualifier for me, and then I thought they had a good chance of being top 5 this year. Amazing improvement and can’t wait to see what comes next from Stefania. 80/10
8. Malta 🇲🇹 Destiny - Je me casse: Not going to lie, the studio definitely did more for me. It was up with Italy and Switzerland for winner contention until the live shows. Don’t get me wrong, Destiny is still amazing live, and the song is a deserved top 5 song. However, the costume and staging just really didn’t add to the song and I think detracted a bit. Her song last year was also much better in my opinion. 75/10
9. San Marino 🇸🇲 Senhit ft Flo Rida - Adrenalina: Oh boy this was a party, and the fact Flo Rida actually was there made it even better. The staging and costuming was absolutely camp, and I was here for it. This was definitely not underrated by fans beforehand, but the jury and televote were beyond robberies in my opinion. Granted I know the backing vocals were carrying the chorus a lot so in terms of vocals, I can see where this song got dinged, but this should have been San Marino’s best ever result at Eurovision, and it wasn’t so I’m mad. 60/10
10. France 🇫🇷 Barbara Pravi - Voila: The new Edith Piaf and probably one of the most representative of the country’s culture for a song. A definite deserved runner up on the night but for me 10th place. I loved the staging, the costume, the emotions. It was all right for Eurovision and me. 50/10
11. Cyprus 🇨🇾 Elena Tsingarou - El Diablo: Come through Cyprus with another female pop banger. I’d say if the formula ain’t broke don’t fix it, but wasn’t really enough to crack top 10 this year. Another early favorite of mine this year but soon got eclipsed. Still going to be listening to El Diablo for a while. 49/10
12. Russia 🇷🇺 Manizha - Russian Woman: I can’t lie that at first, this song was absolutely trash to me but quickly rose the ranks and became one of my faves. Same thing happened last year with Uno. We also always love a good female empowerment moment with the native language thrown in. Manizha is a girlboss without the gaslighting and a true queen. Deserved top 10 the night of. 40/10
13. Lithuania 🇱🇹 The Roop - Discoteque: An earworm for first listen and was top 10 for a while for me but like Cyprus, lost out to some others. No doubt this is a deserved top 10 the night of. 35/10
14. Croatia 🇭🇷 Albina - Tick Tock: The first song to get me pressed on it’s placement. Deserved to be in the final over both Israel and Norway (please come for me I don’t care). They freakin rocked that stage during the semis and the song is absolutely a bop. Albina deserved better. 30/10
15. Sweden 🇸🇪 Tusse - Voices: A beautiful song by an amazing artist. Sure the lyrics were a bit cliche Eurovision but guess what...it’s Eurovision. I can hear the voices. Keep carrying on Tusse. 25/10
16. Albania 🇦🇱 Anxehla Peristeri - Karma: This song grew on me a lot. I liked it but wasn’t a don’t skip for a while on my playlist. The live performance changed it for me. She slayed and the staging was everything for Miss Thing. Also native language brownie points. 24/10
17. Finland 🇫🇮 Blind Channel - Darkside: Before you come for me for having this at 17th, keep reading. I’m not a big fan of the lyrics but the song is absolutely fantastic. This style of music isn’t something I pull out on a playlist often, but I had my middle fingers up for this one (and pointed at Germany but we’ll discuss later). Deserved top 10 as they rocked it on stage. 20/10
18. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 Jeangu Macrooy - Birth of a New Age: I absolutely do not understand the hate for this song. I was also a huge fan of Grow last year so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised for being generally alone again. The fact it got 0 points in the televote and only 11 in the jury is not surprising but extremely disappointing to me. This song is a masterpiece much like the ones ranked above it. Jeangu, you are amazing and deserved so much better than this. 20/10
19. Belgium 🇧🇪 Hooverphonic - The Wrong Place: Fantastic song but fantastic artists. Always here for a dark pop moment. Gonna go get my own Johnny Cash T-shirt. 15/10
20. Spain 🇪🇸 Blas Cantó - Voy a Quedarme: Such a heartfelt ballad. I enjoyed it quite a bit and don’t understand the hate it has. Didn’t deserve 0 points in the televote. 14/10
21. Denmark 🇩🇰 Fyr og Flamme - Øve Os På Hinanden: Look we all know this song is cheesy but it’s the cheesiest Velveeta queso loco so it’s ranked so high in my opinion. This is a nod to the whacky and weird Eurovision I love. It’s always in my head and I always find myself dancing along. Deserved to be in the final over two of the songs in Semi 2. 13/10
22. Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 Efendi - Mata Hari: As far as the song goes, it’s enjoyable, but the stage show was a hot mess in my opinion. The choreo looked a mess and the different sheer legging configurations on the backup dancers was not the correct fashion choice in my opinion as I was distracted by the thought of why are they all different. Did deserve their spot in the final though. 12/10
23. Moldova 🇲🇩 Natalia Gordienko - Sugar: The studio version of this song is a heavily replayed one on my playlist bc of the drop and dance-ability of the song. However the downfall of the song was it’s live performance. The staging was fine and the choreo was great but those attempted sexy whisper vocals were not the choice to go with. I don’t want to sugar-coat this 😝 so they were terrible. Glad she made it but I felt her position in the final was one of just pure luck. 11/10
24. UK 🇬🇧 James Newman - Embers: The nul points was a huge ass oof. This song isn’t bad but I can see where people didn’t vote for it bc it’s not super memorable in terms of who all was participating this year. I like the song and always sing and dance along. 10/10
25. Israel 🇮🇱 Eden Alene - Set Me Free: This is how to do a revamp and be successful. Eden is a fantastic artist who can clearly sing, but the live performance was not all that sans the whistle tones. Yet the whistle tones aside, the song is lacking a lot. When looking back at the songs available, this one should not have been the selected one. I was always on the fence with this one and still am. 9.5/10
26. Czechia 🇨🇿 Benny Cristo - Omaga: The live definitely hurt this song in the first minute and a half. The second half was absolutely what should have happened in terms of vocals. Still like the song and listen to it often. 9.25/10
27. Ireland 🇮🇪 Leslie Roy - Maps: This song was a victim of a super strong bloodbath and shoddy staging ideas. The song is arresting and a bop. Leslie’s gruff voice mixed with the modernized Irish sounds is a match made. The staging of this song that required Leslie to run along with the beat and the distracting and constantly changing bits of the performance we’re definitely it’s downfall. It didn’t deserve last place in Semi 1 though. 9.25/10
28. Portugal 🇵🇹 The Black Mamba - Love Is On My Side: I am the first to admit that while I don’t like the song, it deserved the final. The staging and atmosphere elevated the song. 9/10
29. Austria 🇦🇹 Vincent Bueno - Amen: In the battle of the Amens, this one wins solely based on the classy and amazing staging. Don’t get me wrong, Slovenia’s was also elevating but this one did it better. 8.5/10
30. Australia 🇦🇺 Montaigne - Technicolor: This song is a fantastic one for studio. The live since the Sydney Mardi Gras performance has been rough and didn’t necessarily improve. I feel bad bc I do really love this song but it definitely didn’t deserve to qualify. This being said, I love Montaigne, and Don’t Break Me was my runner up last year, and I still listen to it as my anthem when I’m feeling down. I wish I could rank this higher but I can’t. 8.5/10
31. Romania 🇷🇴 Roxen - Amnesia: This song is great in the studio but it got old real fast for me and I don’t know why. This mixed with the poor vocals and the bizarre costume:stage combo was really what did this in and got this low in my ranking. 8.25/10
32. Slovenia 🇸🇮 Ana Soklic - Amen: The loser of the Amen battle, but just barely. The song and vocals are better in my opinion but the whole package was just barely edged out in the end. 8/10
33. Latvia 🇱🇻 Samanta Tīna - Moon Is Rising: Look, this song is nowhere near as good as last years. The queeeeeen sashayed away with that annoying trap beat. 8/10
34. North Macedonia 🇲🇰 Vasil - Here I Stand: Leave it to the gays for bringing musical theatre to Eurovision. The song honestly isn’t that special or memorable but he’s higher up bc his stage and voice are amazing. 7/10
35. Norway 🇳🇴 Tix - Fallen Angel: A great message on mental health outside of the song and Tix seems like a quality fella but I do not like the song. I preferred it in Norwegian. And this low ranking is not at all influenced over him beating out Keiino (but maybe a slight bit tho). 5/10
36. Estonia 🇪🇪 Uku Suviste - The Lucky One: While this was 1000% better than last years entry, it still was relatively boring. The stage was equally as boring so sorry Estonia, but you didn’t make the mark. 4.5/10
37. Poland 🇵🇱 Rafael - The Ride: This throwback to the 80s was a bad one. The attempt at a one hit wonder vibe really hurt it along with the artist’s terrible vocals. Also half the time, he was behind the pyro and relying on backup vocals. 4/10
38. Georgia 🇬🇪 Tornike Kipiani - You: You really should not have to wait so long for the more upbeat rock ending of this. If it was that last 30 seconds for 3 minutes, it would be much better. A definite step back from last year. 1/10
39. Germany 🇩🇪 Jendrick - I Don’t Feel Hate: Jendrick might not feel hate but I do bc that is all I feel when this song comes on. 0.5/10

Eurovision 2020 ranking
welcome to another year and another ranking. the last few years I used to put the songs in different categories, but this year I did that (from top 💐 to flop 🥀) AND gave every song an actual number AND added a comment. wow, so brave, I know. it’s a bit long, but here we go:
💐:
Norway: it was love at first sight and listen with this song. I connect with it, I love the lyrics, the instruments, her, everything about the nf performances. this is my very strong number one this year and, btw, the studio version is so much weaker than the live version
Switzerland: this song makes me very emotional and I love it. his voice is so lovely and with this one I, again, enjoy and feel the lyrics. I am very curious to see what they will do on stage
Australia: I wouldn’t say that I am always a huge fan of the songs with more goofy vibes and staging, but this one is a fave. I wasn’t in a great mood when I listened to this the first time and I remember crying because it was just very fitting to my personal situation. so, me and this song have an emotional connection now. also, I enjoyed the contrast that the staging in the national final gave it. it’s just.. same to everything about this song and performance. it’s also my favourite entry from Australia so far
North Macedonia: my only ‘dance’ song in this favourite category. it makes me wanna dance but in a tango and dimmed red lights way. I would also say that it made me think a bit of Switzerland last year, but I like this better
Croatia: another favourite entry that won a national final! I didn’t have a terribly bad year with national final faves. I might even say that I had a good year. anyway, a Balkan ballad :) with nice lyrics :) a bit sad and great violins :) of course I am into this. I love it
Portugal: I had this saved as a favourite before I saw the live performances and I really like that it won the national final. it’s super sweet, pastel pink vibes and my cup of tea
Finland: sweet! this makes me tear up a bit and I see a pattern this year for my personal preference: songs that make me melancholic and cry a bit. although, no one should be surprised because nostalgia and melancholy seem to always be with me
Denmark: while I was making this ranking and listening to the songs over and over, I think this song moved up the most. this is very sweet. last year was too sweet for me and I think this one is better, but on the edge to crossing that line. however, I love that we have a duet. I’m a big fan of duets. is someone going to propose this year again? this song would be at least perfect for that occasion. or maybe a bit too pushing actually..
🌺:
(no. 9) Israel: maybe a tiny little bit too much going on in a 3-minute song and something about it reminded me a bit of JESC songs, but I love the rhythm and I think this performance will be fun
(no. 10) UK: it’s a good song. the breath! part makes it more interesting and I have this song in my car playlist, which means that I am not skipping it usually. however, I also came across the BBC recording and I am not very convinced that the staging and everything will be enough to secure it a high placing in the end
(no. 11) Romania: oh look, I once again connected to a song because I feel the lyrics. that is probably not the best sign with this song but oh well. I am not the biggest fan of the live version here and prefer the studio recording. maybe another bad sign or maybe it’s just the weird screaming in the back and low quality of the equipment etc.
(no. 12) The Netherlands: I don’t think that they are trying to win another time this year with this, but it’s a cute and sweet song and everyone will cheer anyway. I listened to one live recording and there he sounded amazing
🌻:
(no. 13) Armenia: maybe this would be a guilty pleasure, but it’s 2020 we are just enjoying songs. I think the staging for this song will decide how it goes because the song itself is definitely.. different and not for everyone. the studio version is a lot better than the live performance, the lyrics are a bit repulsive to me and I feel like this could slip in the category ‘cheap’, but the whole song also gives me a weird kind of self-confidence boost when I listen to it
(no. 14) Azerbaijan: okay, so the song title made me very excited. the lyrics are.. there. I don’t think I was looking for something relatable in this song, but they are just very random to me. funny enough, I think this will be competing with Armenia because of similar vibes and because a lot depends on the staging. however, I think that this might do better because it’s more esc mainstream and has a better flow, but then again, maybe don’t rely on me when I say such things
(no. 15) Greece: this sounds a bit like a JESC entry to me and I have mixed feelings about it. with this I am also not sure what the message is supposed to be, but I really like the instruments
(no. 16) Estonia: hm. I must admit that I like this song more than I want to, but I don’t love it. I like the dramatic touch, but it’s not relatable at all, which isn’t necessary a factor for a good song of course. I just like having my emotional support songs and this is not one of them
(no. 17) Poland: this and Albania are in the same semi and sound too similar, so my prediction is that only one of these two will go through. personally, I like Poland better, but even if none of them makes it, it won’t break my heart I think
(no. 18) Spain: this song feels a lot longer than 3 minutes and it might be because it’s repetitive, but I can listen to it still. just not too often
(no. 19) Lithuania: this is a fan fave, right? personally, I’m just.. not in love. I like the message, but I don’t feel the need to listen to it regularly
(no. 20) Iceland: it’s alright. it’s there. I can’t really think about things to say about this
(no. 21) Italy: a ballad. in Italian. ground-breaking. just kidding, I think the fact that it’s in Italian saves it a bit, but I don’t really listen to this. I don’t mind it playing in the background, but it’s also not in my car playlist
(no. 22) Ukraine: I feel like I should technically like this more than I do, but I don’t really listen to this, sorry
(no. 23) Belarus: just like with Ukraine: I think I should like this a lot more than I currently do. I also find this song a bit boring
🌼:
(no. 24) Georgia: not a fan of the screaming, but I see why it fits the song. I am not sure, though, whether this will be the year that they make it back to the final
(no. 25) Albania: did anyone ask for the English revamp? I don’t think so, but they did it anyway. it is too forgettable for my taste and reminds me of something that they sent already in the past few years, but now it’s in English, so even less original. it isn’t a bad ballad though
(no. 26) Ireland: I know what this song is trying to tell me, but it is trying very hard to make sure we all understand it. it also reminds me a bit of a song that they would play in a disney channel film and it annoys me a bit
(no. 27) France: I might not skip it always, but it’s very repetitive and I still stand with my association of the Netflix show YOU and this (sorry, Tom)
(no. 28) Austria: my friend said that this song sounds like it should be by Sweden and I think that she is right. I never really was into that kind of vibe though, so I am not the biggest fan
(no. 29) Germany: not terrible, but also kind of strange vibes. I don’t like the lyrics (I will tell my mama whatever I want). I also think that Germany took inspiration from Switzerland last year and who knows, maybe they will finally start playing their own songs on the German radio stations and stop playing Sweden’s 2016 entry
(no. 30) San Marino: San Marino is once again bringing the disco vibes, thanks. I can’t watch the video twice in a row because it makes me feel like I’m on a trip, but good for her! I should definitely also get a little more freaky myself sometimes
(no. 31) Sweden: I’m not a fan. I was a fan of other Melfest entries though.. anyway, this is not a bad song of course, but definitely a bit boring to me
(no. 32) Moldova: I don’t hate it, and some very few parts of the melody I even like, but this is my least favourite Kirkorov produced, or written or bought or pushed through or whatever he does, song
(no. 33) Bulgaria: if everyone should find a similar partner then Bulgaria could team up with Romania this year. I find Bulgaria to be a lot more boring though
(no. 34) Cyprus: keep on running and keep on running and keep on running.. etc. etc. etc. this is how I feel when I make myself jog once a year
(no. 35) Malta: sounds very familiar, but I haven’t figured out yet which generic pop song it reminds me of
(no. 36) Belgium: yet another year and I am sadly bored by Belgium’s entry yet again
🥀:
(no. 37) Czech Republic: to this song I imagine the scenario of a school mate, that you aren’t too close with, but he is friendly, so you listen to the songs he made himself and uploaded and then you assure him that it sounds cool and you will add it to your music collection, but then you don’t ever listen to it again. this never happened to me, but that’s the vibe somehow. it’s just not really my kind of song and it also misses a bit of a real concept and flow because, even after the revamp, to me it still sounds a bit unpolished
(no. 38) Serbia: nop. I am very much for wmn pwr but I don’t like this. I get very strong mean girls vibes from it and I don’t say this as a good thing because I would rather not get bullied. I despise the lyrics and overall, everything, but I see why one would call it a ‘bop’ perhaps
(no. 39) Russia: when they were announced I looked them up and already was skeptical. most of the time this simply isn’t my kind of genre, humour and taste, and I was right. it annoys me. I am sure, like with every song btw, there is an audience for this, but I am very far away from being that audience
(no. 40) Slovenia: I’m sorry, but I really don’t like her voice, which is not a good thing, obviously, when ranking songs. I also find the song quite boring and it is another example of songs that somehow feel longer than 3 mins
(no. 41) Latvia: this gives me a headache. I don’t understand the lyrics, the music makes me want to leave the room, it’s a no from me and my last place

some thoughts on this year’s entries
or i guess just a ranking with comments tacked on
albania - this year’s nf season was a let down for me, partly because a lot of the winning songs weren’t the best on offer, and partly because albania picked first and nothing could live up to it. i love the depth this has, the dark, almost tribal vibes, and most of all i love how they didn’t fuck up the revamp like they usually do. if this is staged correctly, i think this could do really well. 10/10
greece - i feel like this has been overlooked in the wider fandom, which is odd because greek entries are usually pretty polarising, for better or for worse. regardless, i really like this. it’s atmospheric, powerful as hell, and katerine is more than capable of nailing it live. don’t count greece out just yet! 9.5/10
portugal - festival da canção was easily the best nf this year and the portuguese public picked wisely. telemóveis is such an intriguing song with a really curious sound, so traditional yet so modern at the same time. i’m not 100% on the staging, but they have time to figure it out. 9.5/10
spain - la venda wasn’t the song i was rooting for in the selection (rip todo bien, never forgotten) but i’m fully on board with it now. this works so well with a big audience, and you just know that the crowd will be on his side. if this doesn’t go top 10 at the very least i’ll be stunned. 9/10
cyprus - this is just as instant as fuego for me. not sure if tamta will do as well as eleni, but the cypriot delegation has definitely found their winning formula. 9/10
malta - malta is not fucking around this year. this is a verified banger, and their best entry in years, perhaps their best ever. take as many youtube ads as you want, michela, you deserve them. 8.5/10
azerbaijan - without a doubt, azerbaijan is back with a vengeance. you can tell they’re determined to set the record straight and prove that last year was just a blip, because this is great and hopefully the live performance reflects that. 8.5/10
denmark - i really should hate this, but i can’t. it’s so innocent and cheerily optimistic in a way that i can only be jealous of whilst humming along to the chorus. this deserves to do well. 8/10
italy - it took me a little while to warm up to soldi, but once i finally got there i really started to appreciate it. i don’t think it’s a winner, but it’s a very good song, and in the end that’s all that matters. 8/10
san marino - yes, serhat is in my top 10, and what of it? you only wish your fave could write a song in ten minutes and have it go off like this. and yes, if he doesn’t qualify you’ll catch me openly sobbing in the streets for weeks. 8/10
switzerland - an unabashed bop with some actual choreography, but lacking lyrically. then again, so was fuego and that popped off live. he’s also working with the same stage director as eleni, which can only be good news for him. 7.5/10
the netherlands - don’t get me wrong, it’s a very polished song and i’m sure duncan’s great but like... is that it? this is the big fan favourite? i’m very whelmed. 7.5/10
armenia - i was expecting something like yete karogh es from srbuk, so this came completely out of left field in the best way possible. i thought we’d lost our token edgy pop song when ukraine dropped out, but armenia saved us at the last minute. the only thing i’m worried about are her vocals, because, from what i’ve seen, she isn’t the most confident performer. 7/10
serbia - another respectable but ultimately pretty safe pick from serbia this year. nevena has a really strong voice and she sells the song well, so i think she’ll avoid another moje 3 style placement. 7/10
germany - first of all, aly ryan was robbed. secondly, thank god the surprise song didn’t win. thirdly, this is alright. nothing spectacular, but it’s cute and the spinning stage was a great stylistic choice. 7/10
latvia - thank you latvia for letting this win and rejecting markus riva’s basic ass for the sixth year in a row WHEW i really love the whole atmosphere that surrounds this. barring a miracle, however, i don’t think it’ll qualify, but it’s still a good attempt. 6.5/10
sweden - i don’t think it’s john’s most solid composition, but it’s a decent entry nevertheless and it’s nice to see sweden picking an entry that isn’t generic pop again. 6.5/10
united kingdom - my only faint glimmer of national pride so far this year is that we managed to pick the only good song from the flaming garbage pile that was our nf. yeah, the lyrics are redundant and it’s a ballad by numbers, but michael gives it his all and it really pays off. 6.5/10
ireland - this will absolutely not do well but who cares, it’s fun and harmless. super chill and easy to listen, and i think sarah’s a big eurovision fan already which is nice. also i’d just like to take this opportunity to thank her for ditching the ylva and linda song she originally applied with. 6.5/10
iceland - hm. this is one where you need to listen a few times to get a full impression of what the fuck you’re hearing/seeing. i really did not like this when i first heard it alongside all the other söngvakeppnin songs (and most of them sucked lbr), but now i’m kind of ambivalent towards it. i still don’t like the screaming or the key change, but it’s something different and i can admire that. 6/10
slovenia - fine, but forgettable. she has a nice voice, but there’s a distinct lack of stage presence from the two of them and i fear that this might get lost in the semi final. 6/10
israel - i’m conflicted here. i definitely don’t think home is as bad as the fan polls and reviews imply, but it’s not great either. a verse or two in hebrew would have really elevated this and i’m a little baffled as to why the writers didn’t include even a little bit considering the contest is on home turf this year. still, kobi’s a very convincing performer and israel probably didn’t want to win again anyway. 6/10
poland - this is an odd one, which isn’t a bad thing at all in a year full of safe entries. not sure if using the bilingual version was the best shout, but it’s clearly still very polish and i’m glad to hear that they’ll be wearing the traditional clothing on stage in tel aviv. 6/10
czech republic - the chorus absolutely slaps, and if i was judging by music alone this’d probably be in my top ten. unfortunately, though, the rest of the song exists. the lyrics are truly abysmal, with some of the lines ending awkwardly and without proper rhymes where they’re needed, and the spoken-word section is genuinely unbearable. 5.5/10
austria - i honestly don’t know where to place this one. very underwhelming when it was first released, but now i feel like there’s potential here. most of austria’s recent entries have been very under the radar only to end up doing quite well. i’m not as optimistic about this as some of those, but only time will tell. 5.5/10
hungary - not a patch on his previous entry, but pleasant enough. he’s a good performer and unless the staging really sucks, he’ll do fine. 5.5/10
north macedonia - it’s a nice ballad? i guess? and, unlike a lot of their recent entrants, tamara is an established singer who we all know can sing live. there are also rumours that the delegation has been planning the performance for a while, so who knows, perhaps this’ll qualify. 5/10
georgia - this has been growing on me lately. the song itself is a bit of a bust, although the revamp helped, but oto really brings it to life on stage. even if you don’t understand what he’s saying, you can tell by the emotion in his voice that he really means it. 5/10
russia - the nightmare dream team hasn’t produced a good song in over a decade at this point, this included. kirkorov needs to quit fooling himself and let someone else have a go. 4.5/10
belgium - belgium’s had quite the glow up since 2014, but i fear they’ve gone for style over substance this year. wake up is very polished, but it doesn’t go anywhere and eliot’s live performances haven’t been convincing as of yet. 4/10
lithuania - i don’t know what was more shocking, him winning the selection or me finding out that he was lolita zero’s real voice in 2017. this isn’t awful, just very repetitive and strangely put together. 3.5/10
norway - sue me, i don’t like this. the bald guy feels out of place and out of tune, it sounds like it was written by a child, and oh my god it’s so unbearably cheap. 3/10
estonia - eesti laul was such a let down this year. usually there’s a good mix of mainstream and alternative genres, but the new producer doesn’t seem to give a shit about variety, which is a real shame. anyway, victor’s performance is slick, but he can barely sing and the song itself is nothing to write home about. 3/10
romania - when this was first selected i didn’t mind it, probably because i just really didn’t want laura bretan to win, but as the season drags on i’ve really soured to it. it feels like it lasts for a minute longer than it actually does, and the whole ay-ay-ay part was not a good choice. 2.5/10
australia - as someone who was a big fan of estonia last year, this is honestly the furthest thing from that. it comes across as quite cheap (even without the questionable staging), and the chorus really grates on me. 2.5/10
belarus - i didn’t watch the entirety of the belarusian auditions for them to reject the potato monks in favour of lidl’s own brand zara larsson. 2/10
france - this is why delegations should be wary of selecting social media stars for their national selections. yes, they might get the viewing figures up a little, but they’ll probably win and the song will be Bad. i respect his message, but holy shit is this hamfisted as hell. 1/10
finland - if anyone was wondering how darude only ever had one hit two decades ago, here is your answer. 1/10
moldova - they really don’t want to qualify this year, huh. could’ve had ca adriano celentano, but nope. basic tune, painfully simple lyrics, but i guess her voice is nice enough 1/10
croatia - this... is awful. upsettingly so. at least jacques’ last entry had a novelty factor, but he’s doomed this poor kid to failure. 0.5/10
montenegro - i have absolutely nothing positive to say here. honest to god one of the worst songs i’ve ever heard, and no amount of clumsily shoehorned in folk instrumentation was ever going to save this. i can only pray that they’re spending their preparation time wisely and taking singing lessons, but considering that they probably blew half the budget on the music video, it’s unlikely. 0/10
as for potential winners,  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
a lot of the big fan favourites don’t have a winning vibe about them, so we might be in for a shock this year. please let it be albania or greece
also feel free to drop me an ask if you want to chat about last year’s entries since i kind of ditched tumblr for a year or two lmao

Eurovision 2007 my top 42
Tumblr media
Hello, and welcome to another episode of this ESC top series, as I go back now to May 10 and 12, 2007 when the 52nd edition of the contest was held in Helsinki, Finland, after Lordi’s victory in Athens last year, A record 42 countries took part that year, while Monaco withdrew from the competition, Hungary and Austria returned, also we said hello to Georgia, Czech Republic, Montenegro and Serbia, the latter two as independent countries, which all of them entered for the first time ever. The contest had a 28 songs semifinal, which was too much IMO and this had to be the year when the two semifinals format should’ve been introduced, because, well, 28 countries competing and only 10 qualifying was a bit unfair. Anyway, the contest was won by debuting country Serbia, with Marija Šerifović with the song Molitva, making this their first and only victory to date. And now, let’s review this looooong field of songs.
1st Place: UKRAINE/Verka Serduchka-Dancing lasha tumbai (Real Placing: 2nd-235 points)
I know this is a joke entry, but this works for me, the performance is such a funny thing to watch, the music is so crazy but I love this entry so much, my heart goes to Verka Serduchka, I love her so much. One of the best runner ups ever.
2nd Place: BULGARIA/Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankulov-Water (Real Placing: 5th-157 points)
This is another epic song, the music is so wonderful, her voice is pretty unique and I love the performance, subtle but effective, I always forget what I’m doing when this song comes through my playlist, I don’t feel on this world with this song, so stunning.
3rd Place: SERBIA/Marija Šerifović-Molitva (Real Placing: 1st-268 points)
Oh the winning song, and I love it, her voice is so powerful, she’s so amazing on stage and the performance was simple but stunning, the music is so lovely and cute and the last part it’s the best part of this one, I think this was the right winner, also a deserved one and kudos for being in Serbian, I love the feeling in this one.
4th Place: ANDORRA/Anonymous-Salvem el món (Real Placing: 12th SF-80 points)
UGH SO CLOSE TO THE FINAL, and IMO the best Andorran entry ever, this is the kind of music I heard in 2007 in those dark years of mine, and I love it, i enjoy the music so much, his voice is perfect for this one and I’m so impressed because of the result, surely this deserved the final.
5th Place: FINLAND/Hanna Pakarinen-Leave me alone (Real Placing: 17th-53 points)
WOOOOOOOOOO THIS ENTRY IS SO POWERFUL, her voice is stunning, the performance is everything here, I fell in love with this entry, this is pure rock, oh my, I’m so mad for this song. This song deserved so much more on the night
6th Place: PORTUGAL/Sabrina-Dança comigo (Real Placing: 11th SF-88 points)
3...points... far... from... qualification... WHY? This song is very catchy, this makes me want to dance with somebody, her voice is good and I love the lyrics as well, the music is so Latin and yeah, I’m in love with this song, so close to the final :(
7th Place: HUNGARY/Magdi Rúzsa-Unsubstantial blues (Real Placing: 9th-128 points)
Another heart breaking song, her voice is perfect, the music is superb, the performance is so effective and her song in the last part makes me feel what she feels while she’s singing the song, this blues is so perfect and it’s one of the best Hungarian songs ever.
8th Place: ICELAND/Eiríkur Hauksson-Valentine lost (Real Placing: 13th SF-77 points)
AGAIN WHY THIS DIDN’T GOT THROUGH THE SEMIFINAL, this entry is perfect, his voice is stunning, the performance is cool, the music is amazing and the lyrics are so sad but brilliant, I can’t understand this result, this had everything to be in the final and be on the top spots, just an undeserved result.
9th Place: BELARUS/Dmitry Koldun-Work your magic (Real Placing: 6th-145 points)
AWWWW YEAH KOLDUN, this song is so amazing, the music is brilliant, catchy, hooks you up at the first time and he’s so handsome, the performance is so stunning and this song is one of my favorite Belarusian songs ever.
10th Place: LITHUANIA/4Fun-Love or leave (Real Placing: 21st-28 points)
An entry that relaxes me so much, this is the perfect song for a walk in the park or for a coffee shop, her voice is so soothing and the music is so good and sets the mood, the performance is so perfect as well and this is one of my fave Lithuanian songs.
11th Place: LATVIA/Bonaparti.lv-Questa notte (Real Placing: 16th-54 points)
Oh this song touches me every time I listen to this one, the music makes me feel nostalgic and I enjoy so much the lyrics, they sing so well together and I don’t know why I cry when I listen to this one. A perfect song for me.
12th Place: GREECE/Sarbel-Yassou Maria (Real Placing: 7th-139 points)
Another good Greek entry, the music is so nice and enjoyable, his voice is so cool and the performance works perfectly in this one, this entry has a very good feeling to it and I like this so much.
13th Place: CYPRUS/Evridiki-Comme ci, comme ça (Real Placing: 15th SF-65 points)
WHY THIS FAILED TO QUALIFY, again Queen Evridiki serves a good voice, a stunning performance and the music here is so good, I enjoy this song so much and yeah, this song deserved the final instead of many prequalified entries.
14th Place: SLOVENIA/Alenka Gotar-Cvet z juga (Real Placing: 15th-66 points)
OH THIS ONE IS STUNNING, the music is so epic and powerful, and I love every part of this, her voice is so mesmerizing and the lamp in her hand is hilarious but suits this so good, Yeah, at first I disliked it but now I love it, the chorus is so beautiful.
15th Place: ESTONIA/Gerli Padar-Partners in crime (Real Placing: =22nd SF-33 points)
The sister of the 2001 winner, and this song is so good, the music is so mysterious and enchanting, her voice is so strong and powerful, also the performance suits this perfectly, the chorus is so cool and I’m in love with this song as well.
16th Place: SPAIN/D’NASH-I love you mi vida (Real Placing: 20th-43 points)
A Spanish boy band, and I love this song so much, they sing so well and I love the Latin vibe to this song, also the performance is good and they are handsome, a nice entry overall.
17th Place: GEORGIA/Sopho Khalvashi-Visionary dream (Real Placing: 12th-97 points)
This song makes me travel to another dimension, the music is so good and her voice is very epic, the performance is so perfect and the dancers are cool. This is a perfect debut entry for Georgia, and one of their best entries ever.
18th Place: GERMANY/Roger Cicero-Frauen regier’n die Welt (Real Placing: 19th-49 points)
The jazz vibes in this song are so wonderful, his voice is amazing and this song overall is one of the best German songs of the 00′s, I’m so amazed by this song and RIP Roger, this song is timeless.
19th Place: FRANCE/Les Fatals Picards-L’amour à la française (Real Placing: =22nd-19 points)
One of my guilty pleasures of this year, I love the music, they sing alright and the staging is so pink and crazy, I enjoy this song so much and it makes me smile every time I listen to this one.
20th Place: RUSSIA/Serebro-Song #1 (Real Placing: 3rd-207 points)
Another song that it’s good, but I don’t understand the high placing, surely the music is so cool and they sing so well, but the lyrics are so bad and ruin the whole song, maybe with other lyrics this could’ve been higher in my list.
21st Place: IRELAND/Dervish-They can’t stop the spring (Real Placing: 24th-5 points/last)
This is a very Irish song, and I love the music so much, but sadly her voice was so horrible that night, this song makes me want to be at the Irish countryside and yeah, I like that fact. Maybe the 2nd placed song in their NF would’ve been a better choice.
22nd Place: AUSTRIA/Eric Papilaya-Get a life-get alive (Real Placing: 27th SF-4 points)
OMG I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH, his voice is very good, maybe the performance was a bit odd but I enjoy the music so much, reminds me of the rock songs of those years and I like it. Don’t understand how this finished so low in the semifinal.
23rd Place: CROATIA/Dragonfly ft. Dado Topić-Vjerujem u ljubav (Real Placing: 16th SF-54 points)
This is a pleasant rock song, her voice is very good and I love it, also Dado’s voice is perfect for this song, the music is so relaxing and the chorus is the best part, but the verses are brilliant as well.
24th Place: MOLDOVA/Natalia Barbu-Fight (Real Placing: 10th-109 points)
AWWW THIS IS AN EPIC SONG, the beginning is perfect, I love the music, the lyrics are good and her voice is so powerful and stunning, I... wow... don’t know what else to say, I’m in love with this.
25th Place: SWITZERLAND/DJ BoBo-Vampires are alive (Real Placing: 20th SF-40 points)
This song is very good, I love the Eurodance feeling on this one, but the performance was a whole mess, also the voices would’ve been better, overall this song had potential, but many factors contributed to it’s fall.
26th Place: THE NETHERLANDS/Edsilia Rombley-On top of the world (Real Placing: 21st SF-38 points)
Queen Edsilia returned, and this song is very good, I enjoy it, not as her 1998 song but this has charm, her voice is stunning, the music is nice and enjoyable, I think the performance was a bit of a let down but I like this overall.
27th Place: FYR MACEDONIA/Karolina-Mojot svet (Real Placing: 14th-73 points)
A good song, I love the music, her voice is stunning and the performance is very good, this is miles better than her song in 2002, and the chorus here is my favorite part, because I can remember it and I start singing it out of nowhere.
28th Place: NORWAY/Guri Schanke-Ven a bailar conmigo (Real Placing: 18th SF-48 points)
This is another interesting song, also this reminds me of another song, her voice is quite good, but it’s a bit flat, this makes me want to find someone to dance, and I enjoy this song, still I think this would’ve been better.
29th Place: BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA/Marija Šestić-Rijeka bez imena (Real Placing: 11th-106 points)
This Balkan ballad is so cute, but I can’t connect with this one and I always forget about this song, the staging is stunning, anyway I can’t hook up with this song.
30th Place: SWEDEN/The Ark-The worrying kind (Real Placing: 18th-51 points)
Ehhhhhhh... I kinda like this song? But anyway, this is one of the weirdest entries that Sweden has ever sent to the contest. This is kinda good but I still think that Måns Zelmerlöw, Andreas Johnson, Sara Dawn Finer, Sanna Nielsen and Marie Lindberg were better choices.
31st Place: UNITED KINGDOM/Scooch-Flying the flag (For you) (Real Placing: =22nd-19 points)
This song is so weird, and I kinda like it, the music is very interesting, and maybe they aren’t the best singers, but I enjoy it. Maybe if they sent Cyndi that year, they would’ve finished a bit higher.
32nd Place: TURKEY/Kenan Dogulu-Shake it up sekerim (Real Placing: 4th-163 points)
I liked this more at some point of time, but now I think it’s an annoying entry, still I love the music because it makes me dance, his voice is quite good but also annoys me at some point. I quite understand how this finished so high.
33rd Place: ROMANIA/Todomondo-Liubi, liubi, I love you (Real Placing: 13th-84 points)
This is another interesting song, the mix of languages might have been to much for this one, but I love how this song builds, I like that, also the last part was brilliant, but I think so many things were happening on this one and I was distracted by it.
34th Place: MALTA/Olivia Lewis-Vertigo (Real Placing: 25th SF-15 points)
Another good song ruined by the singer, the music has an oriental touch that makes this enjoyable, but her vocals are so bad, specially in the chorus, anyway this isn’t bad as I thought before.
35th Place: DENMARK/DQ-Drama Queen (Real Placing: 19th SF-45 points)
This song has everything, the music is something I like, the staging is so cool, my problem here is the voice, at some point sounds off key and at the end sounds painful. A nice entry ruined by the voice.
36th Place: ISRAEL/Teapacks-Push the button (Real Placing: 24th SF-17 points)
Okay, I kinda like this, this is a guilty pleasure for me, I don’t think it’s bad but still, it’s very weird and I understand how this finished so low. Another love-hate case with this song.
37th Place: POLAND/The Jet Set-Time to party (Real Placing: 14th SF-75 points)
Oh... again, this song was a bit all over the place, the verses are incompatible with the chorus, which is the only part I like about this song, this is an average song. The performance is also very weird.
38th Place: ALBANIA/Frederik Ndoci-Hear my plea (Real Placing: 17th SF-49 points)
I find this interesting, the verses are brilliant, but then the chorus arrives and everything goes away from me, his voice is very good and I enjoy it, I think it’s kinda mediocre overall.
39th Place: MONTENEGRO/Stevan Faddy-Ajde, kroči (Real Placing: =22nd SF-33 points)
Okay this also isn’t a bad debut, but I feel this is a weak song overall, the chorus is so catchy and I remember it, sadly, it’s the only thing I like about this one, nice voice though.
40th Place: CZECH REPUBLIC/Kabát-Malá dáma (Real Placing: 28th SF-1 point/last)
Somehow I enjoy this song because I like rock music, but his voice is a bit raspy for my taste and I think this entry was risky in that year, not a bad debut, the music is so cool but I think they could’ve delivered this a bit better, also an undeserved last place in the SF.
41st Place: ARMENIA/Hayko-Anytime you need (Real Placing: 8th-138 points)
I try to like this song, because it’s an ethnic ballad, but sadly, every time I listen to this, I dislike it more and more, his pronunciation is bad, so if this was entirely on Armenian this would’ve been better for me. Not a bad song but this is a bit boring.
42nd Place: BELGIUM/The KMG’s-Love power (Real Placing: 26th SF-14 points)
OH THIS IS A MESS, this song is annoying, his voice is bad, and I don’t want to feel the love power on this song, I don’t like this.

Yoonmin Fandom Metrics
Last month a survey was conducted to analyze the metrics of the Yoonmin fandom. Here are some of the responses:
Tumblr media
Of these 903 responses, 826 of them (92%) of the respondents had selected that yoonmin are their only ship, their main ship or one of their main ships. This group is the one that will be focused on for the rest of this analysis. (Also was that one person lost? Did you get home okay?)
Of this focus group who mainly ship yoonmin, the bias distribution was:
Tumblr media
Unsurprisingly, Min Yoongi and Park Jimin, the two individuals responsible for the YOON and the MIN in yoonmin, came out as the top two biases’.
However, Min Yoongi, with a staggering count of 453 votes (55%) heavily outweighed all the other members, hereby proving that he was in fact not fucking around when he claimed “Sorry mom, your son’s too popular,” in his Mic Drop verse.
As a follow up to these results, respondents provided their second bias (if any) to help the other members stand a chance against Rap God Min Yoongi.
Tumblr media
(He still took a whopping 23% of the votes).
The most interesting part about these graphs is that it alludes to the fact that most yoonmin stans bias Yoongi (not Jimin, although he is obviously second in rank). This is probably due to the fact that of the “popular” bangtan ships, Jimin’s name comes up multiple times. Thus Jimin stans are more evenly split in who they ship Jimin with, but there are not that many “popular” Yoongi ships.
A little more detail on the focus group and how they came to stan bts and ship yoonmin is summarized in the following graphs.
Tumblr media
BTS’ popularity has grown exponentially, with the greatest increase seen from 2014-2015 due to the release of their HYYH series. A parallel trend was observed in this analysis with the growth of the Yoonmin Fandom.
Tumblr media
The next part of the survey focused on “Secondary Fan Creations” as Mr. Bang likes to call them. This includes but is not limited to: fan art, fan fiction, photo edits, video edits, blog posts, memes and so forth.
Tumblr media
The results show that 99% of us are on Tumblr for the right reasons.
Tumblr media
In terms of creating fan content, 31% of the respondents bless us on the daily with their contributions to the fandom. (Amen.) The rest of the majority enjoys and wishes to contribute to doing the lord’s work. 2% of the respondents who consider yoonmin their main or only ship do not create or want to create fan content because they think it is wrong (and that’s okay - to each their own).
The next question was the most revealing and one of the most important to this analysis. Of the 861 responses, 640 voted that the reason they ship yoonmin is due to their relationship / interactions themselves. Only 2-4% of the respondents said they shipped yoonmin because of how they look together/aesthetics, fan content, external influences, or the availability of yoonmin materials in the fandom itself. This outright disproves the common (and tired) anti-yoonmin stan (and “rare pair” stan) claims that yoonmin is usually shipped for these reasons.
Tumblr media
Of the 30 respondents that chose “other” their reasons often eluded to specifics moments / interactions by yoonmin. Some of the more notable mentions are:
“They look like they understand each other’s struggles.“
“Their real and supportive friendship, they know each other's limits and share their vulnerabilities, so soft for each other, involve each other in the most intimate parts of their life.”
“Everything?? Idk they just vibe with me best, they're lovely and sift but also savage and have a really fun dynamic that i enjoy best.. they calm me when I’m upset as well which is like surprising bc I don’t calm down easily. +their soft moments like the earlier answer.”
“Because Yoongi is so whipped for Jimin and they look at each other like they have galaxies in their eyes“
“They look like they are real / they act like they are married / they honestly seem like they’re in love.”
“the way they are with each other in general. platonic or not, they love each other, care for each other a lot and it's nice to see. “
“From what I saw, it felt very real. Like yeah, I could get that super unbreakable bond with all of the BTS ships but for some reason, Yoonmin just stuck out for me and it felt really genuine and not just for fanservice.“
“Just...everything” (Many of you said this or voted for multiple categories from the above so everything x 10)
“You Know” (thank you Anonymous, I do know :’).
There were so many other great ones yoonmin is such a soft ship with even softER STANS istg but I won’t post them all here but you can see them in this supporting post.
It is commonly believed that ALL yoonmin stans only ship them because of the “typical” subby bottom jimin/ dom top yoongi stereotype. The data below proves this is untrue - as 34% of respondents don’t care at all or like all dynamics equally, and 18% prefer a more balanced switch relationship dynamic. Combined, the votes for these categories make up over 50% of the responses, signifying that, no, not all yoonmin stans, in fact not even the majority of yoonmin stans, ship them for this reason.
It should be noted though that, of the 48% of fans who expressed a preference for a specific relationship dynamic, 5% preferred top jimin and 43% preferred top yoongi (so yeah, top yoongi is more popular, but only to the minority group of the stans who actually have a specific dynamic preference).
Tumblr media
Similar results were observed for which dynamics yoonmin stans feel are most realistic.

Comments: This category was added to the survery much later and therefore did not have as many responses as the others above. Nonetheless, there’s seems to a correlation between who you ship (yoonmin) and fave BTS song. Many of the songs on this list have “yoonmin parts in the MV/Choreo” like Spring Day and BST, or are song’s where the two have particularly shined and / or produced. (They might also just be on this list because they’re lit songs in which case truuuu I agree).

Where have you visited in the world and where was your fave and why? Where would you dream destination be to travel to?
I’ve been to many european countries: Finland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Armenia, Belarus, Ukraine, Italy, Spain. I’ve been to the USA once, but it was long time ago. It’s difficult to say where was my favourite because i have good memories about every trip i had. Probably Rome-Naples-Barcelona was the best one, because it was my first time to travel alone and I enjoyed it a lot!
My dream destintaion... Well, I would really like to come to London one day. But i think my biggest dream is to have a road trip from one US coast to the other. There are so many national parks there, I would love to see as many as i can. Not sure if it ever comes true but a girl can dream :)

My Eurovision Top 10 2018
This is my final top 10 for Eurovision this year, before the first semi final tomorrow and the jury final tonight! Also I’ll put my personal qualifiers from each semi final! And yes, I put the UK in my top 10 even though I’m from there, but hey, why not? Also, this top 10 is so interchangeable amongst itself.
Also, this is just my opinion remember! You’re all entitled to your own opinions!
12 points to Albania (100% my winner, as you might have seen)
10 points to France
8 points to Hungary
7 points to Switzerland
6 points to UK
5 points to Israel
4 points to Cyprus
3 points to Denmark
2 points to Italy
1 point to Ukraine
Honorary mentions to Ireland and Lithuania, you’re technically in here too
Click below if you want to see my semi-final qualifiers! It’s a very long post, so brace yourself!
MY SEMI FINAL ONE QUALIFIERS
Albania (if he doesn’t get through I might actually cry)
Switzerland (sadly not betting on this one though)
Israel
Cyprus
Ireland
Lithuania
Estonia
Armenia
Austria
Czech Republic
Greece would have been on here but I’m really let down by her staging and her voice doesn’t sound strong. Also notice I am not on the Bulgaria hype train at all, I like the studio version but they look so bored on stage, like they don’t even really know each other.
MY SEMI FINAL 2 QUALIFIERS
Not so many faves in this one, so I’m having to put through ones I know will qualify even if I’m not big on the song.
Denmark
Hungary
Ukraine
Netherlands (although that staging looks awful)
Slovenia (for staging and performance only tbh)
Malta (despite dodgy vocals)
Australia (despite dodgy vocals)
Romania
Moldova (despite seemingly being from 2005)
Sweden (but only just)
Funny Girl was one of my absolute faves in the Latvian selection but now I find it quite boring, sadly. I know Norway are going through, but I can’t support a song with a ‘scoobadoo’ section.
Sweden’s song isn’t bad, I just find it cold and calculated, and also that video of Benjamin laughing at the Macedonian entry lingers with me. I know he apologised, but I really don’t think it was in the spirit of the contest- the same goes for Sennek and that tweet. I really like the Belgium studio cut, but her vocals are terrible live and that rude tweet has knocked her out of my qualifiers.
The quality difference between SF1 and SF2 just pains me, that some crap will get through and lots of good ones will be lost, but I guess that’s life.
OPINIONS ON BIG FIVE + PORTUGAL
France and Italy are both in my top 10 (or 12), just two brilliant songs.
Germany is in my top 20, and Portugal probably might be as well.
I love our entry this year and I hope SuRie doesn’t come last because she just doesn’t deserve it, but I have a sinking feeling its going to happen.
Spain... sadly, I’m a cynic and don’t buy into young love. Nice voices but... no.
