I replaced the BMW E46 330d automatic transmission GM 5L40-E with one in good working condition taken from donor car . You will see how to change GM 5L40-E transmission oil and transmission filter.

Total quantity of transmission oil inside the gearbox is 8,9 liters or 9 quarts!

You can use any oil with similar specs as Dexron VI or Lifeguard 5.

That transmission is used on lots of brands as Bmw, Crystler, Range Rover etc.. one advice is to check the number plate of your transmission and make sure you order the correct filter, cause some of these transmission has difference in the pans.
