Enter Avitus Rix, a few years into his career and much less infamous than Saren. The mission: go undercover with a partner as newlyweds moving into the neighborhood, and investigate discreetly from there. The partner: one Macen Barro, Avitus's old squadmate from basic training, whom he is less than pleased to see again. It's up to the two of them to infiltrate the community and find the killer - while coming to terms with their own old rivalry and new feelings.

this is technically a prequel to to catch a rabbit, in that it takes place 5 years prior, but they’re standalone stories and aren’t necessary for understanding each other, unless you feel like hurting yourself with more context of why saren’s great-grandfather being in his last few months hurts very bad :)

Taunting: Chin up to show a little throat, mandibles slightly open.

Yes/nod: Head tilts up and back just a bit to show a little throat, mandibles may flick open briefly.

No: Head dips, subvocals buzz, mandibles tight.

Whatever: An uneven shrug that shifts and resettles the cowl and shoulders.

Sadness: Browridges and mandibles down, gaze low, shoulders/cowl high. Subvocals may croon sorrowfully.

Teasing: Eyes may squint, mandibles click a couple times against jawline.

Question: May whistle questioningly, a single mandible might come up and out along with a head tilt.

Amused: May chirr, subvocals might roll a bit. Mandibles loose, and may flick slightly and quickly. Eyes may crinkle.

Hurt: Mandibles tight to the jaw and high up. Subvocals flatten. Head turned away and arms cross under the chest/keel.

Excited: Mandibles may flutter frequently, accidentally clicking against jaw in child-like glee. Browridges high.

Would you ever write... a BG3/Mass Effect crossover? (VIOLENT desire to see Astarion and your Avitus allowed to chew holes in each other, terrible useless bastards that they are)

Now I’m imagining the two of them enabling the very worst parts of each other because that would 100% happen if these two disasters actually met. Astarion hears about how Avitus became a Spectre and is like, “this is why you never help people”, but he’s totally projecting because he so badly wanted someone to save him… and nobody did. Avitus has a lot of appreciation for Astarion’s self-preservation at all costs mindset and his obsession with power and maybe encourages that, because he knows what it feels like to be tortured, scared and powerless.

Meanwhile, Petra and Macen are off to the side, watching this go down and figuring out how to stop their idiot partners from enabling one another.
