Ok I don't hate Castis. I have a lot of sympathy for Castis, and I genuinely think he is a good person.
But if your alien husband's relationship with his dad is "it's complicated" ....you're gonna be on the side of your alien husband, let's be honest.

[5] 'Father Duty' || Castis Vakarian
[ 1 ], [ 2 ], [ 3 ], [ 4 ] by scent.2002 || Meta
Here we have:
Tumblr media
Take your kids to work day where precious little baby girl Solana (we're still polishing working on Solana and I couldn't decide whether she's younger sister or older sister — I feel like she's younger but also feel like she's older depending on the mood swings).
Garrus verbally and literally pointing out someone's form isn't proper because Dad taught him the proper way and Castis is just 'well, you heard my boy' — ah, yes, more delulu coming your way ♥
Solana is not at all happy to be there but she's the behaved one so she gets to be in daddy's holster.
Tumblr media
Garrus eating off dad's spicier plate because it's 'dad's spicier plate' and he wasn't going to back down to dad saying, "You're too young for this, Garrus. This is too spicy for y—."
Tumblr media
Look at the sheer determination to appease his father and his pride as a Vakarian. NOMNOMNOM LITTLE ANGEL ♥
Tumblr media
Dad making copies of work related files in his omni-tool because Solana decided to play with it and did cute little doodles and blamed it on Garrus.
Garrus gets a time out and doesn't know why. Dad won't tell him.

Garrus: I have to admit, Dad, I'm surprised. I had no idea you were such close friends with a human.
Castis: No, no, you don't understand. It's not like that. Alec is more like the son I never had.
Garrus:
Garrus:
Garrus: I'M THE SON YOU DID HAVE

Today only from a card carrying member of the Castis Vakarian Appreciation Squad, a refresher on canon since there's a not-zero number of people in 2024 who seem blissfully unaware of how much we know about this man in canon (including andromeda yes the game is canon go cry about it).
He's a cop. Yes Castis works for C-Sec, implied within the same unit/building as Garrus and to the contrary of his son, is implied to be both good at his job and well-regarded for it. (This will be important for later points try to remember it.)
He has alien friends. Castis is canonically one of Alec Ryder's best friends. They're good enough friends that he passes on rumours/heresay about the Reapers to him and reminisces about spending time with him on the Citadel. Any turian old enough to have been an adult during the FCW and who has human friends as of canon prolly isn't a miserable old xenophobe. Whilst no, working at C-Sec doesn't exclude him from having shitty thoughts about Krogan and Quarians, it's a fairly good sign he's not anti-alien on the whole if he'll befriend a human.
He's got a personality. How dare minor characters have those! But more seriously, acting as if Castis is portrayed as nothing but a rule-worshipping automaton is doing him a disservice. If nothing else, his willingness to befriend and hang out with Alec, who's very much of the opinion that rules are guidelines to be circumvented when at all possible, shows that he's capable of nuance and maybe even a dash of line-pushing of his own accord. Maybe he's comfortable within the system and trusts law and order as set out legally above all else but c'mon guys, you don't hang out with a guy who goes on to break AI law and get dishonourably discharged (and then remain friends with him after that when it's made damned clear few others do) without being able to see shades of grey.
He trusts his son. This one I suspect may be more contentious BUT let's be honest here, Garrus isn't an easy person to be around. We hear about the pair of them clashing on the job and within their personal lives about the spectres but here's the thing: Garrus winds up on a secretive mission with a human and xenophobic terrorist group, after running off to a lawless hellscape to play batman. He remains distant until done working with Cererbus and then returns home with a crazy tale about a dead human spectre, genocidal robots from the year dot and half his face missing. Castis not only believes him but does so willingly enough that he does everything he can to help him get the news to the right people, just in case he's right. Equally, whilst we don't have an exact date for when the call with Alec occurs, it's post-start of ME1 at the very least and within that he's already willing to take what Garrus is saying Shepard says at face value. Within that call, it's made patently obvious that no matter what, he still trusts Garrus on some level and is proud of him on top of that trust.
He cares deeply for the people around him. Perhaps this one's linked with 3 but whatever, my post, my rules; in the comics, the picture we're painted by (unreliable narrator) Garrus is that of a driven, cold man who doesn't care enough about his own family. This is why he doesn't come home when Mama Vakarian gets hurt, we're told, and we're expected to take that as face value even when she herself says that by the time he can get away from work and be back there, she'll be mostly healed. Kinda contrasted by the fact that he seemingly retires/takes time off from C-Sec to be with his wife when she's dying. Now, the details are kinda fuzzy on the whys and hows but during ME3, he and Solana escape Palaven together. Maybe the war's going poorly enough that they're able to finagle staying together through the draft, maybe they come across one another purely by luck, we don't know. Either way, rather than attempt to get back to the Citadel and to where he presumably still had a job and/or was needed, he sticks with his daughter. Can't do anything more to help his son but he's gonna stick with at least one of his kids to make sure she survives. As well as all this, the "do things properly or don't do them at all" lesson Garrus struggles with from him is (gasp) not bad advice for their situation. He's trying to teach his son important life skills and whilst there's no denying he's going about it wrong, a key point is in fact that Garrus learns to master the gun he's struggling to fire and it in fact becomes one of his specialities! He becomes an exceptionally good marksman! The lesson fucking worked! He still, regardless of the reasons for it, seems to support and be content with Garrus not fulfilling his mandatory 15 but instead joining C-Sec and (worse still) doesn't have too much of an issue with him consorting with Spectres. Perhaps he's not best pleased but he definitely comes to accept that that's how things are irrespective of his own feelings about them as either a concept or as people (his belief that Garrus being a spectre would be a terrible no good very bad idea is, in fact, backed up by canon as being entirely correct too).
Conclusion/TL:DR. Take a lesson from Castis Vakarian himself here, either write about this man properly or don't write him at all, I'm begging y'all. There's an awful lot more to this character if you think about him and put together the information canon gives us on him, so do so.

Snippet from The Messages in Between Chapter 2. Garrus' message to Shepard during their six months apart. I broke my heart writing it.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: July 25th, 2186]
I’ve gotten more comm buoys out to increase the hard lines of communication. I will be pretty busy dealing with them and getting them up and running. Mom is back on Palaven. Treatments went well. She’s starting physical therapy. She’s really trying.
I can’t believe I’m actually seeing her walk.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 7th, 2186]
Okay, so I’ve learned from the best and started yelling. And the Hierarchy is listening again. My task force just doubled overnight and with more money. We have actual tangible stockpiles of food and medicine that could last us years in most of the colonies.
I’m finally getting somewhere on this, Shepard.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 11th, 2186]
Have you heard from Liara? I could really use her right now. The terminus system is giving us trouble on our comm buoys. I’m hoping she has a few contacts that could sort that out. She’s not answering, though. Remind you of anyone?
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 18th, 2186]
I’m this close to reaching out to Wrex for help. Maybe if I got him a bottle of Ryncol, he’d be cooperative? I’d save it for you, but we all know what happens when you get your hands on it, Shepard. And you know it would kill me. Wrex just seems like the safe choice for it.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: August 24th, 2186]
She’s in the hospital again. Spirits Shepard it’s bad. Something about her liver from the treatments.
I shouldn’t have hoped.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: September 2nd, 2186]
We just held her funeral.
At night, when the wildflowers bloom. An old Cirpritine superstition. Your spirit can’t reach safe passage without them. The flowers guide the spirits back to the grounds of Palaven for final rest.
I’ve never seen the fields fuller than they were tonight.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: September 2nd, 2186]
On Omega, I thought I was going to die there and be stuck to haunt that rock.  Not exactly a lot of flowers flourish there. Thankfully I had you to pull me out.
I wish you were here with me now, Shepard.
[Garrus Vakarian - Draft Date AST: September 5th, 2186]
My mom’s name was Laesia Vakarian. She used to design ships for the turian military. Mainly she designed smaller military vessels, but she was so proud of her work.
Did you know she wanted me to steal Normandy blueprints when I told her I joined? I’m only half-joking. She was pretty upset she wasn’t asked to be on the project.
She said the Normandy was something she’d always hoped for, a true invention.
She didn't care about C-Sec or that I quit.
My joining made her so proud. She said I got to be part of the symbol of the best of what turian and humans can do together. That I was destined to do great things with the opportunity. She was right. But I’m hoping there’s more we can do with the Normandy.
Her eyes lit up so much over that vid call when I told her I joined. That was the last time I saw her as truly herself.
I was so hopeful I would have seen that again. I guess that is what I get for being greedy in my hope.
I wish you could have met her in her better times.
She would have liked you, Shepard.

I’ve been lucky enough to get asked by Sephraem to draw Baby Garrus with his papa Castis Vakarian enjoying some time together!
I imagine Garrus to have a huge window to see the space around them, and a starry carpet so he learns about the cosmos 🥺

A young Castis Vakarian a.k.a. a 'failed' attempt of capturing his seasoned look. #BlessedVakarianGenes

Tagging my thirsty Turian friends.
@eyecandyeoz @yuku78 and I recall you also like ME @arcsimper5 (if I remember correctly)

A bit late, but I couldn't resist not having one done for Husband #3, Castis Vakarian from Mass Effect.
As you know, the lack of Castis Vakarian out there is depressing me. Yes, depressing me. I did my part in contributing to the Plo Koon tag, now for my very rare gem of a Turian Husband.
He turned out so damn fine ;//////////; and this is from the same artist who, by the way, has not done an in-depth study of Turians yet. I literally just threw some photos in today and he had this done and I'm just so in love, you know?
This is heavily inspired by @yuku78's take on thicc boi Garrus and I couldn't resist adding some tatts to my fine boi ;////////////;
But he looks so damn young here and idk, maybe we'll do more study to give him that seasoned, daddy vibe.
Now, please excuse me while I go pine for him for days.
Also.. WIPS!

The final chapter of Long Way Home is now up!
“What are you thinking?” Garrus asks her, and she smiles and laughs to herself.
“That this is a real good way to end the story of the war.”
“Bet the sequel will be just as good - boring, though,” Garrus says, and she imagines something domestic and slow, because that’s all their life will ever be from now on, and she’ll never long for anything more.
When he walks into the house, his eyes dart immediately over to the fish tank in the living room, which covers the entire wall, and he breaks into a grin, pointing at it. “You definitely did not tell me about that addition to the house.”
Smiling sheepishly, she says, “it was a gift from Wrex and Adrien. They paid for it and found someone who was able to build it.”
Ro cuts in, taking Garrus’ hand and walking over to the aquarium to tell him about the different varieties of fish that they have, and how they take care of them. Garrus listens intently, glancing over at her periodically. Castis has wandered off to prepare snacks - Lettie had been complaining of hunger during the drive home.
“You like taking care of the aquarium with your mom?” Garrus asks Ro, who nods.
“She lets me help in the greenhouse too! I learned how to weed last summer!”
“My mom was a gardener too and when I was a kid, your auntie Sol and I were often roped into helping her weed the garden. I never got as good at it as you are,” Garrus says, and Ro turns to him, mandibles slack.
“But you don’t know if I’m good or not!”
“Ah, but you have passion for it, and I never did. I’ll bet you could tell me the names of all the plants in the greenhouse.”

Snippet Sunday
Tagged by @westernlarch for another snippet Sunday, or more like snippet Monday as I got to spend the day with the family yesterday 😁 Tagging @kalliesa @luciferbecons @partofmycharm @misseffect  @serendipitys-teapot @hauntedjellyfishtraveler to participate if you are so inclined.
So I have a few projects in the works and I debated on weather I post a snippet from one of my fanfiction or from one of my original works. After some debate I figured I post a snippet from my oldest fic that I’ve been taking a break on as I’ve hit a bit of a road block with it.
Working Title: New Life “So, you’ve been staying here with the Commander?” Castis asks outright; he was never a man to beat around the bush.“ Until she wakes up, I don’t...we’re in this together... I...”  Castis nods understandingly, “Towards the end of your mother's illness, I never left her side.”  His voice grows soft as he remembers Laurus, how Corpalis Syndrome robbed her of being able to do the simplest of tasks. The subtle shake of her hands, the smallest stutter or slurring of words in her otherwise eloquent speech, the weakness she felt in her body. It was too late before either of them realized that these were all early symptoms and not just signs of old age. The disease took its time, taking Laurus away from him slowly over two and a half years, the preventive medication barely doing anything but prolonging the inevitable. Robbing them of their golden years together.  Garrus remembered how his dad hovered over his mother every chance he got while he and Sol had to coax their dad into simple tasks like eating or sleeping. Now the tables were turned, and it was his father’s turn to do the same to his son. Castis could see the weariness on his son’s face, how his clothes fit loosely around his frame.  “I cannot fault you for wanting to do the same, but I will fault you for the smell. When was the last time you showered? Garrus felt like he was thirteen all over again with that question and the look, spirits his father knew how to make him feel like a child.  His father grined, knowing he’d gotten Garrus right where he wanted him. “Wash up; your sister will be a bit longer with the doctor. Then we can go grab a bite to eat.”  Garrus looks around, unsure of what to do or even if he could use the shower in Shepard’s hospital room. He didn’t have a clean change of clothes either, not having returned to the Normandy in the last few days. Miranda and Dr. Chakwas were always able to shoo him away when Shepard was heading into another surgery. Even primarch Victus was able to persuade Garrus out of the Commander's hospital room while one of the other crew members visited.  Usually, he returned to the Normandy to shower, if not quickly buff his plates before changing his clothes. Sometimes he was able to get some sleep; other times, Garrus had enough of an appetite to eat a small meal.  When someone couldn’t visit, or no surgery was needed, Garrus stayed by Shepard’s side no matter how much the staff grumbled. He didn’t want her to wake up alone thinking she was resurrected again; it was her biggest fear. Something Shepard had confided in Garrus early on if not Cerberus, then the Alliance, or worse, some other fringe group would try it again.  It made her uncomfortable in hospitals — even the med bay on her own ship made her skin crawl. Yet she pushed that down anytime any of her crew was injured, or doctors at Huerta needed supplies they wouldn’t otherwise be able to get in Reaper-controlled territory. It's why Garrus never left because he knew Shepard would never leave any of them. Even when Ashley was in the hospital and the two women were at odds, Shepard still looked out for her friend.  “I can’t; there’s no one...I don’t have...” Garrus stammers as his father tossed him a small travel tote.   “I made a call, was able to pull a favor and get you an overnight bag, and your pilot friend Joker said he’d be by momentarily.”   One of these days, Garrus told himself he’d stop being surprised by his father. Today wasn’t one of those days, and tomorrow wasn’t looking any better. Garrus looked at the bag he had just caught mid-air like it was some puzzle to be solved. Upon opening it, he found a change of clothing, some toiletries, a sanding stone and buffing brush, and a few other needed items.  “I’ll watch over her until you’re done washing up. She won’t be alone, son I promise.” Garrus nodded and went into the small bathroom with a mundane shower hoping to get enough hot water to drown the ache in his muscles.   Once Castis heard the bathroom door latch, he pulled a necklace out of his pocket. The slim golden chain of turian design had a simple locket holding an image of his beloved. “Laurus, what do I do? You were always better at these things than me.” Sighing, Castis sat in the all too familiar uncomfortable hospital chair, watching over the woman who captured his son’s intrigue. Castis wasn’t ready to call it love yet. He’d only heard Garrus’s side of things. Made the connections during those long conversations when Garrus first arrived back home. He even approved of the human commander; she was more turian than the two of them combined. Castis knew the feelings were mutual, Victus had told him as much when they talked that morning. There were rumors of a taboo hand-holding incident with a high-ranking Reaper Advisor and the famous Commander on Menae.  Though here she was frail and in a hospital bed — Commander Jane Shepard of the Normandy, first human Spectre, hero of the Citadel, conqueror of the Collectors, Savior of the Galaxy. Her image on the extranet and vids didn’t do Shepard justice, painting her as a larger-than-life figure for humanity to live up to.  Something Castis was sure even she couldn’t live up to. Maybe it would have been better if she had died in battle — to die for the cause, be the legend she had been built up to be. An honor for any family. What more could the Alliance ask for? Yet what kind of world would she be waking up to? What impossible pedestal would she be put upon? All of that didn’t matter to Castis, what mattered was his son, as selfish as that was — but he knew Garrus. No matter where Shepard went, he knew Garrus would follow.  “I’m not good at these things. Garrus's mother was the delegate and worked in the diplomatic corps back on Palaven. She turned down a council position after the kids were born, wanted to give them some form of stability. Something Citadel life doesn’t always allow. I know my work didn’t allow that even after joining C-Sec. Duty always came first. It’s the turian way, but Laurus could always find the balance.”
Castis sighed again as he looked down at the locket in his hand. “You two would have gotten along. From what I’ve been told, you're a strong, confident woman, eloquently spoken, and have a wicked sense of humor — all things my Laurus was.”A hitch in Casti's voice. “If not for you, I have a feeling I would have buried a child and my wife. It’s a debt I can never repay, yet I owe you my thanks, Commander.  You brought my son back to our family. He was able to say goodbye to his mother,  but if you could just do one more impossible thing and wake up.”  Castis leaned over Shepard’s bed and placed the locket next to her head, pinning it to the pillow so it wouldn’t get lost.“Laurus, watch over our son’s mate. Help the commander find her way back to the world of the living. I’ll watch over our boy — make sure he keeps both feet on the ground.”  Garrus had exited the bathroom, washed and dressed in the items his father had brought him. The clothing hung looser than Castis liked, his brave child wasting to nothing. Still, he didn’t blame Garrus; he knew too well what it was like to wait in this hell. How it aged your soul and left you a shell of who you once were.

I’ve been working on this short comic concept of “What if Garrus decided to bring his human / spectre / undead girlfriend home to meet his dad right before hitting the Collector base.” And like, if I finish, there’s gonna be four panels with dialogue... but this panel is enough.
This panel of Castis and Shepard is everything I need to get across.
