[5] 'Father Duty' || Castis Vakarian
[ 1 ], [ 2 ], [ 3 ], [ 4 ] by scent.2002 || Meta
Here we have:
Tumblr media
Take your kids to work day where precious little baby girl Solana (we're still polishing working on Solana and I couldn't decide whether she's younger sister or older sister — I feel like she's younger but also feel like she's older depending on the mood swings).
Garrus verbally and literally pointing out someone's form isn't proper because Dad taught him the proper way and Castis is just 'well, you heard my boy' — ah, yes, more delulu coming your way ♥
Solana is not at all happy to be there but she's the behaved one so she gets to be in daddy's holster.
Tumblr media
Garrus eating off dad's spicier plate because it's 'dad's spicier plate' and he wasn't going to back down to dad saying, "You're too young for this, Garrus. This is too spicy for y—."
Tumblr media
Look at the sheer determination to appease his father and his pride as a Vakarian. NOMNOMNOM LITTLE ANGEL ♥
Tumblr media
Dad making copies of work related files in his omni-tool because Solana decided to play with it and did cute little doodles and blamed it on Garrus.
Garrus gets a time out and doesn't know why. Dad won't tell him.

So anyway, things I've been thinking about this morning: Garrus Vakarian probably likes foreign films
Like.
Turians are the Proud Soldier Race Guys. They have an incredibly rigid, collectivist, by-the-book kind of culture, where every single individual is obligated to spend a good chunk of their formative adolescent/young adult years in the military, where Turian Ideals are hammered into them. So they don't seem like they'd have a big media scene glorifying tropes which go against their general cultural values - specifically, in this case, an individual going outside standard procedures to Get Shit Done on their own terms.
And this is a trope that Garrus loves. When we first meet him, he's sick of being the Good Little C-Sec Cop who follows orders and gets swamped with red tape and can't get the bad guy because Procedure Says No. He clearly sees himself as/wants to be the cowboy cop, detective-gone-rogue type, and he's got a pretty romanticised idea of what that would look like in his head. Bless him.
But. He's learned about that trope from somewhere, and I can't really see it being his own people. Especially with a father like Castis, who's so staunchly exactly what's expected from a turian. He seems like the type who'd have strong opinions about what his kids are reading and watching and being influenced by, because while he obviously loves Garrus, he wants him to grow up to fit a certain mould. The Turian version of the wish-fulfilment vigilante flick is the Spectre Movie, but Garrus isn't allowed to watch those, because Castis doesn't approve of Spectres being Outside The Law.
So baby Garrus grows up lowkey feeling stifled by the way society works, and maybe that's a problem with him, so he gets his head down and does his best to be a Good Turian and make his dad proud, and then he gets his discharge papers and goes to work for C-Sec, and suddenly he's living on the Citadel by himself, and he's got free time nobody is telling him to do X or Y with. He's basically moved away from home for the first time - the Citadel is not Turian-controlled, it's a thriving multicultural melting pot with plenty of people living there who don't exactly conform to Turian standards, he's got colleagues with interests he's never even heard of, and he's gonna start seeing new things.
Human superhero films and cop movies with lots of explosions and no paperwork. Small-budget Batarian short films about victorious anti-Hegemony rebellions. Even his own people's Spectre films. Some kid selling drugs in the wards has a Batman comic in his confiscated backpack? Garrus borrows it to browse on his lunch break. Some Salarian ex-STG operative publishes a memoir? Garrus reads it on the shuttle to work. All these people who feel like he does.
Like. Give me Archangel who regularly spouts lines from Batman or X-Men or Krogan Thunder 3 (or whatever the fuck else he's been watching) as part of his Good Guy Victory Speeches, that makes at least one of his multispecies team who Knows That Franchise pull up short and go "Oh my god, you're a nerd."

Get to know your fanfic writer!
Tagged by @commander-krios - thanks!
When did you post your first ever fanfic?

Adrien Victus, Castis Vakarian, Urdnot Wrex, Alec Ryder and Lora Shepard from Mass Effect.
Character(s) you haven’t written about before but plan to write about soon?
He’s an OC, but Jan, who is Petra’s youngest brother! He’s a sweet bean of a person and I’m not sure if he’ll show up in Lost Souls Like Us or if he’ll make his first major appearance in whatever the sequel is, but he’s a lot more like Petra than her other siblings, and knows the pain of not fitting in with the rest of the family, as Petra does. He’s a lot younger than her (23 years younger!), so she’s very protective of him.

Baldur’s Gate 3, Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Your top AO3 tags?

Current platform you use for posting?
AO3
Snippet of the WIP you are currently working on?
From an as yet untitled Baldur’s Gate 3 WIP:
“Be realistic. Don’t send your youngest son away,” she pleads, but Father gives her a sharp look and when he speaks it's stern; more like Grandfather instead of Father’s own gentle tone.
“You do not contribute more than the bare minimum to the household, therefore you do not get a say in how I raise my son.”
There it is: because she makes magic on stage instead of shoes, she’s not good enough to have an opinion on how her youngest brother spends Mother’s final days.
“Does Jan not get a say in how he lives his life?”
“He’s 14,” Father says, deflating. The carriage arrives to take Jan away and he weeps, wiping his eyes on the velvet sleeves of his black suit. Father told him to wear his nicest outfit for the journey to the academy. A dragon must make a good first impression.

11, 16, 26 and 40 for the fic writer asks pls?
yessss thank you!!
writer asks
11. Link your three favorite fics right now
hfsdlfh i dont read fic very often but let's go digging. gonna challenge myself to find some NOT written by my friends cause otherwise it's too hard to pick favorites :lmao:
No Love, No Comfort by NoCoincidence [Stellaris] is a "i dont go here but this fucks severely" stellaris fanfic that @lightspeedpowerpunk recced me a while back and i inhaled the whole thing in one go, it's about an emergent AI that learns to be aggressive and eradicate organic life as an act of self-defense because its creators tried to kill it first and oh my god it's just so fucking good trust me
To Ourselves and Our Posterity [Mass Effect, orphaned fic] is an old favorite, shakarian childhood friends au where hannah dies and leaves custody of young jane to cnclr sparatus, it was never finished and im obviously no longer onboard with the hannah/sparatus among other aspects but it was one of the first fics i ever read that cast sparky in a genuinely kinder more sympathetic light and honestly i would love to give rewriting it a shot it has a spot in my heart forever
The Wedding Crashers by DasMervin, MrsHyde [Twilight Saga, Supernatural] is a spitefic originally posted on livejournal moved over to ao3 to dodge lj's posting limits, leah clearwater has broken free of jacob's shitty awful pack that's shitty to her and fucked off to go hunt sparklepires, unfortunately renesmee's wedding to jacob turns up and she's forced to attend so she brings the winchester brothers. shenanigans ensue. it's tongue-in-cheek and one of my favorite fun goofy rereads just trust me bro
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
Tumblr media
well right now i'm thinking about a short "same scene, different pov" thing for the climax of itlog feat. garrus and tasora, mostly for the comedy of running into garrus's parents (because of course castis got an invite to the anniversary gala, and asadia isn't a frail delicate thing that will shatter if she thinks about leaving the house castis vakarian of course they should go don't try to use her condition as an excuse to be a recluse), because naturally garrus HAD to latch onto the ONE person in the whole embassy who would think his dad's nerdy poindexter routine is attractive
tasora, comfortable enough around garrus to go a little feral: hey blue guess what garrus, literally just got back from not dying horribly on omega: if you say my dad is kind of a dilf i'm walking into traffic
26. Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?
blood in the water? blood in the water. it's got half-mad cyborg salarians, it's got batarian worldbuilding, it's got transformers expies, it's got balak, it's got hegemony conspiracy bullshit, what more do you want from me
40. If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?
i mean ok i know the cool dramatic action scenes and climax bits are always what people want to see art of but honestly i think my strength is more the somber poignant moments that are quiet but still carry all the weight - The Man in the Mask would be a really good one that i'd love to see art of, with all the symbolism of desolas hiding in the shadows and valis only just able to see a small piece of the whole, or on a similar note ch2 of The Weight of Memory has some really good imagery with the arterius clan watching the sunset from the porch while they talk about the horrors of war, esp this bit:
“We’re ninety, Val.” Desolas didn’t get up, just faced forward and settled his elbows on his knees and chin on his clasped hands. Trebia had fallen low enough to kiss the tops of the trees far across the yard, and as its rays traced over the crags and cracks in his brother’s face, Saren could almost see the ghosts of the man he’d met above Shanxi tracing their hands over his plates once more. Shadows turned to bruises, old scars glittered blue, a weary half-lidded eye swelled shut, teeth disappeared from bloody gums. “We haven’t been young in a long time.”
.... basically any of my shit with the arterius bros, huh. especially desolas. be kind to my big brother he's been through a lot he can have some beautiful but melancholy imagery

My Works - A Masterpost:
A Point of Reference: (First Contact AU)
Name: Project Sunseeker (OG version) - 166k (Complete) Rating: Mature Notable tags: AU, First Contact AU, Canon Related, Canonical Character Death Ships: Shakarian (Female Shepard x Garrus Vakarian) Summary: It’s remarkably hard to work out where you are without a single map reference point to rely upon. Even worse, when all your preconceptions about the universe see themselves turned upside down and you're left without a point of reference for life itself. Trapped in a ship orbiting a star on the wrong side of the galaxy, Shepard has to figure out a way to get home - now if only she knew why she was out here in the first place. Undergoing a rewrite which can be found here: Project Sunseeker (Updated Version)
Name: The Idealist - 42k (Complete) Rating: Mature Notable tags: Companion to Project Sunseeker, Angst, Canonical Character Death, Terminal Illness Ships: Shakarian (Female Shepard x Garrus Vakarian) ; Castis Vakarian x Original Turian OC (Garrus Vakarian's mother) Summary: The road to hell might be paved with good intentions but one's journey down it is easily expedited by legendarily poor decision making and bad influences. Some of the events from Project Sunseeker from the POV of one Castis Vakarian. (Will undergo a mild refresher after the Project Sunseeker rewrite)
Name: Extended Release - 3677 words (Complete) Rating: Mature Notable Tags: Implied/Referenced Character Death, Epilogue Ships: Shakarian (Female Shepard x Garrus Vakarian) ; Kryterius (Nihlus Kryik x Saren Arterius) Summary: Some things could not be left unsaid and, sometimes, closure is needed. Two people who never really got to meet have the discussion they needed to have. And then the world keeps on turning, regardless.
Name: Table for Two - 1966 words (Complete) Rating: Mature Notable Tags: First Meetings, Love At First Sight (or maybe Avitus is just concussed) Ships: Barrix (Macen Barro x Avitus Rix) Summary: How Avitus and Macen met for the first time - more or less
Name: Wipe My Hands Clean - 55k (Complete) Rating: Mature Notable Tags: Angst, Tragedy, Suicidal Ideation, Canonical Character Death Ships: Barrix (Macen Barro x Avitus Rix) ; Kryterius (Nihlus Kryik x Saren Arterius) ; Shakarian (Female Shepard x Garrus Vakarian) Summary: Guilt is a funny thing, especially when mixed with grief. Usually both are best shared, but in this case, sharing is about the last thing that anyone wants to do. Following the events of Project Sunseeker, the unwitting villain comes to terms with what he did.
The Places We'll Go: (The AviTis Series)
Name: House of Anarchy - 10k (Complete) Rating: Explicit Notable Tags: First Contact War, Warcrimes, Blood and Gore, Friends With Benefits Ships: AviTis (Avitus Rix x Castis Vakarian) ; Castis Vakarian x Original Turian OC (Garrus Vakarian's mother) Summary: 2157 - In an assault that will later on be known as the Relay 314 Incident, turian forces occupy the human colony of Shanxi. During the dying days of the conflict, two young soldiers rely upon one another for backup both emotional and physical. But the war is not the only thing that is due to end...
Name: Beyond Familiar Stars - 110k (Ongoing) Rating: Explicit Notable Tags: Post-Canon, Alcohol Abuse, Found Family, Grief Processing, Torture, Cannibalism Ships: Past AviTis (Avitus Rix x Castis Vakarian) ; Past Barrix (Macen Barro x Avitus Rix) ; VetRyder (Female Ryder x Vetra Nyx) ; Referenced Kryterius (Nihlus Kryik x Saren Arterius) Summary: The stages of grief don't necessarily come in the order you might expect, but having someone to process them with can make all the difference. Even if the person you pick is just a different flavour of screwed up from you. In the years following the settling of Heleus, Avitus Rix is forced to confront everything this new galaxy has lost him and the few things it'll gain him.
Name: Follow My Lead - 67k (Ongoing) Rating: Mature Notable Tags: Reaper War, Depression, PTSD, Angst Ships: Castis Vakarian x Original Turian OC (Garrus Vakarian's mother) ; Past AviTis (Avitus Rix x Castis Vakarian) ; Barrix (Macen Barro x Avitus Rix) ; Shakarian (Female Shepard x Garrus Vakarian) Summary: Trapped in a war-torn galaxy, Castis Vakarian wonders about the people who left them for that point beyond familiar stars and what has or will happen to them.
Name: Tolerance Tested - 19k (Ongoing) Rating: Explicit Notable Tags: Mid-Canon, Unhealthy Past Relationships, Hurt/Comfort Ships: Past AviTis (Avitus Rix x Castis Vakarian) ; Barrix (Macen Barro x Avitus Rix) Summary: Sometimes, Avitus Rix has too much heart for his own good. Name: First To Come Last - 19k (Complete) Rating: Explicit Notable Tags: Romance, Fluff, Happy Endings Ships: Kryterius (Nihlus Kryik x Saren Arterius) Summary: A lot of things can change in fifty years, but this time, the change is all for the better.
Unrelated Fics: (Which I'm especially proud of)

Name: Like Dogs In Elk - 9334 words (Complete) Rating: Teen Notable Tags: Mission Fic, Spectre Shenanigans, Pre-Canon Ships: N/A Summary: Saren introduces two sorts of feral nightmare - his current and former students - to one another for the sake of a training exercise. There's no way that'll blow up in his face, right?
Name: Strike Two - 6068 words (Complete) Rating: Teen Notable Tags: PTSD, First Meetings Ships: N/A but Alec Ryder & Castis Vakarian becoming friends. Only... there's something thing he forgot to consider.
Name: Trouble And Typos - 4378 words (Complete) Rating: Explicit Notable Tags: PWP Ships: AviTis (Avitus Rix x Castis Vakarian) Summary: Castis has paperwork to do. Avitus has far more interesting plans for their afternoon. So... a compromise has to be come to.
Name: One Problem At A Time (or all of them all at once) - 7292 words (Complete) Rating: Explicit Notable Tags: PWP Ships: Barrix (Macen Barro x Avitus Rix) Summary: Avitus tries very very hard not to be difficult, he really does (this is a lie), but sometimes, dealing with the fact that absolutely everyone in Andromeda is a little bit in love with his husband is slightly intimidating. Fortunately or unfortunately, Macen is well aware of this.

Tarquin Victus, Adrien Victus, Grizz, Lorik, Rolan GO
Jsdjjd can we at least get a coffee first?
Rolan my beloathed little mrrp mrrp
Send me a character and I will answer these prompts about them
First impression
Tarquin: my mind was swarming:
Imagine waking up one day in the middle of the worst galactic war and finding out you're now the son of the new Primarch because everyone else is dead or MIA. What was it like being the son of Adrien Victus, did he always feel like he's living in his dad's shadow? His dad Primarch has just promoted him out of the blue so he can lead a super top secret mission on which the turian-krogan alliance hinges and isn't that a lot to handle? Of course he fucked up and misjudged, he's obviously young and inexperienced and trying to live up to his dad, but isn't Adrien somewhat to blame for putting this responsibility on his shoulders-
Adrien: every time I close my eyes I see that ass shot of him in front of Palaven. Like congrats, you're the Primarch now and here's your planet burning!
But also at the time I was so elated to have Garrus back I could only acknowledge that Victs was a hot older turian 😩👌🏻 but not much beyond that. Back on the Normany tho 😳
Let's just say that I keep thinking thoughts
Grizz: "I would work for you anytime 😏"
Lorik: Oh no 😳
Impression now
Tarquin: first impression but turn it up by 11 + Baby boy, you deserved so much better than this!!! You deserved to come home and to redeem yourself without being turned into a martyr 😭😭😭
Adrien: [REDACTED]
Also, Bioware really gave us a sad turian dilf and expects me to be normal about this???
Grizz: I hope you're getting paid a decent wage
Lorik: I know he's a businessman but he's so polite and endearing!! He just keeps trying to use human expressions but he's also terrible at it!! I love him!!!
Favorite moment
Tarquin: Garrus says it, he never hesitated. Tarquin saw what needed to be done and he did it. We spend so much time with him on that bomb and I think that was a genius decision. It shows us how young he's like in his early 20s and just lost pretty much his whole squad because of his mistake, because he tried to be clever like his dad but didn't have the experience to back it up and- and scared he is in that moment but he's also so determined to finish the mission now.
I think that scrombled my brain a bit.
Adrien: that moment when he's told he's the Primarch now because Fedorian is dead and pretty much everyone in line before him is either also dead or MIA. The shock and horror because he never expected it to happen, there were so many people better suited for the job but they're all dead now and he's a soldier not a politician. But he accepts it with determination because his people need him to be the Primarch now even if it means abandoning his squad on Menae to be quite possibly slaughtered by the Reapers.
It's the ruthless calculus of war. 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Also the ass shot... I am looking (respectfully)👁👁
Grizz: kskdkd when you use a paragon option and he just "Alright fine u didn't hear it from me though"
Lorik: how fast he crumbles when you ask him to testify against Anoleis. Like yaas king, don't play hard to get 😩👌🏻
Idea for a story
Tarquin: he survives the Tuchanka mission. Just that. I want to see him live and get to see his dad again. Consequences be damned.
Adrien: what I said about Tarquin. I'm pretty sure he would rather have his son back that have a martyr.
Also @hanarinhightown's idea for Adrien and Castis being old friends who got back in touch because Adrien needed someone to show him some tough love and who better than that nerd Vakarian who kept bugging him about protocol back in when they were in basic who he also had a crush on.
So after the war they finally meet again and finally get to talk about everything and it culminates with Castis gives a handjob to the Primarch of Palaven
Grizz: Grizz's day off. I want to see how mundane life on Omega looks like for someone like him.
Lorik: I want the whole Noveria quest explored better and more in-depth with both his and Gianna's involvement as well as a proper dive into the class culture of Noveria (maybe even add Lilihierax into it 👀). I want the tension 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Favorite relationship
Tarquin: Victus
Adrien: Tarquin (and Garrus)
Grizz: hmmm maybe Aria? Or maybe he's buddies with Gavorn? 🤔
Lorik: either Gianna or Lilihierax
Unpopular opinion
Yeah idk
Favorite headcanon
Tarquin: he never wanted to be a soldier. I kind of believe he wanted to be an architect or something like that after his compulsory service except the Victus family is so synonymous with the military and war he didn't have a choice. And then the Reaper War started and he had even less of a choice.
Also he can cook good 🤌🏻
Adrien: used to be in the same unit as Castis back in basic and we're constantly bickering like an old married couple. At one point people just stopped recommending they settle their difference in the fighting ring and instead to do it in a more intimate environment.
Grizz: I like to think that he occasionally chats with Patriarch.
Lorik: he has a crush on both Gianna and Lilihierax and no, I am not projecting

You know what? Fuck it. I'm finally growing a pair and sending this. I can't be alone in this boat anymore. TELL ME ABOUT LANTAR SIDONIS
HELLO ANON
I will GLADLY tell you about Lantar Sidonis
My Lantar was born on Invictus in 2160. He doesn't remember it though. He's effectively never been planetside or seen a natural landscape. His dad got sick when Lantar was still very young (Invictus is not friendly to turian biology), and his mom, Lyra, had to take odd jobs to support them alone, quickly getting in trouble with the Terminus mercs that congregate on the colony world. She and Sid spent the next several years hopping around different stations in turian space looking for safety and work.
They ended up on Omega when Sid was 13. He grew up on the station, becoming an errand boy for an elcor shop owner, where he got to know all the ins and outs of Omega. This led him to fill a natural opening when, several years later, he met Melenis, a turian defector from Palaven who became his best friend, and while the two were living with Lyra, they began to take on jobs for low- to mid-level information brokers, up until Lyra's death, after which he developed a lot of guilt and fear of the organizations he had to continue to appease.
Despite all of that, he was known to his friends as being very clever and funny, if a little naive and quick to trust. He's fairly unnoticeable which works to his advantage, curses like a sailor, and gets himself caught in loops of thinking he's unremarkable -- and thinking everyone's eyes are on him. He wants to believe there's something good out there that he can escape to.
While he's well-liked on Omega by his small circles, he's always felt like a bit of an outsider, and he longs for a turian culture that he never got to experience. He's curious about Palaven and wonders what it must be like in the wide open spaces of a natural planet and having a community that is structured so that people have common goals and values, which he sees as the opposite of what his life has demonstrated. That's why it's a perfect storm when Archangel shows up and saves his life. Because he sees Garrus as representative of the potential he never had (this post isn't about Garrus, but Garrus also sees Sidonis as representative of what he perceives is missing in his own life, and that's why their love was doomed from the start because neither of them was really capable of seeing each other as Just a Person when they met).
That's about it as far as his background goes leading up to the Archangel business, save for the story of losing his mom, which will be in my next chapter in my Omega fic!.......if i ever get around to publishing it.
and he has the hots for castis vakarian

GARRUS’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FAMILY, PT. 1
FATHER -- CASTIS VAKARIAN
Even from a young age, Garrus never quite saw eye-to-eye with his father. Castis was a firm believer in tough love, and always pushed his son to be better. He saw great potential in Garrus, and wanted him to succeed in life, as any parent would. He loved his son, and only wanted the best for him.
Garrus, however, never understood why his father was so hard on him. Nothing he did seemed to please him, and he always asked for more, always pushed him further. As he grew older, the divide between them grew wider. It didn’t help that Castis was constantly working on Citadel while his family lived on Palaven.
Still, there were some times where Castis’s pride for his son would show through; his graduation from bootcamp and promotion to C-Sec investigator are two examples. During these moments, the two got along well.
When Garrus first began at C-Sec, things were well between them. He enjoyed working beside his father, and Castis was proud of the work his son was doing. However, Garrus began to see problems with the way C-Sec was run. Too often criminals would get off with light sentences, or would get away completely because of red tape and restrictions. This frustrated him to no end, and his complaints fell on deaf ears when he vented to his father. Castis had always been by the books -- “Do something right, or don’t do it at all.” Garrus didn’t see value in this when the “right” way so often led to criminals escaping and crime expanding. Their relationship became even more strained as Garrus moved to more extreme and radical tactics to apprehend suspects.
Castis was livid when Garrus left C-Sec in order to join Shepard. He refused to speak to his son until he returned to the Citadel after Saren was defeated. Where Garrus expected his father to be proud of what he had done, he was instead angry at him for going against his orders. If Shepard had followed protocol, he argued, Saren would have been appended much more quickly and peacefully. This led to one of the worst arguments they had ever had.
Garrus tried to return to C-Sec, but found he just couldn’t keep working for them with the way they rans things; constant arguments with his father didn’t help either. When he left for Omega, he sent a simple, untraceable message to his father:
“Leaving for good -- don’t look for me.”
Castis was worried for his son, and did attempt to search for him, but to no avail. As months stretched into years without word from Garrus, Castis grew regretful of all the arguments that had had, and the way he had treated him.
Garrus, on the other hand, was happy to be away from his father’s influence. He was finally making a difference, and doing things his way. It was only during the shootout with Omega’s gangs did he begin to reflect on his relationship with his father. He fully believed he was going to die, and realized that the last conversation he had had with his father had been an argument. He called his father, ready to apologize and say goodbye. Castis told him not to give up, and that they would patch things up back on Palaven later.
Thanks to Shepard, Garrus did end up escaping Omega. He called his father once again from the Normandy, and the two had a long conversation about their relationship. Both admitted that they had been cruel to the other and stuck in their ways. Castis apologized, and told Garrus that no matter how hard he may have been on him, and always loved him and was proud of him.
From then on, the two communicated infrequently. Garrus returned to Palaven for a time after the Collectors were defeated, and he and his father caught up on lost time. Though they still don’t always see eye-to-eye, their relationship is the best it has ever been. Castis couldn’t be more proud of what his son has accomplished and the man he had become.

@eyecandyeoz @yuku78 and I recall you also like ME @arcsimper5 (if I remember correctly)
Tumblr media
A bit late, but I couldn't resist not having one done for Husband #3, Castis Vakarian from Mass Effect.
As you know, the lack of Castis Vakarian out there is depressing me. Yes, depressing me. I did my part in contributing to the Plo Koon tag, now for my very rare gem of a Turian Husband.
He turned out so damn fine ;//////////; and this is from the same artist who, by the way, has not done an in-depth study of Turians yet. I literally just threw some photos in today and he had this done and I'm just so in love, you know?
This is heavily inspired by @yuku78's take on thicc boi Garrus and I couldn't resist adding some tatts to my fine boi ;////////////;
But he looks so damn young here and idk, maybe we'll do more study to give him that seasoned, daddy vibe.
Now, please excuse me while I go pine for him for days.
Also.. WIPS!

Twice Buried. Never Forgotten.
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/2EXRYFY
by HeronBlueSuccumbs
I wanted to write a fic from Garrus's perspective and expand on Commander Shepard's character & background. For me, Garrus was always a young hot head who grew into one hell of a man. And the trilogy left me wanting more. Here I explore his journey from reckless youth to hardened veteran. While this story will diverge from cannon, the basic laws of the Mass Effect Universe will be respected. And I will focus on the time between games & alternate perspectives/journeys during the reaper war along with plenty of twists and turns. Rated T for now. However, that will change.
I will also add tags as the story develops. Already, I feel like I've given away some major plotlines with the tags, and don't want to spoil this story further; but I understand wanting to hunt for specific types of fanfiction. :)

The Places We'll Go Masterpost
Aka: Castelau stumbled dick-first into writing 150k of their own rarepair and wishes to drag other people down with them. Avitus Rix/Castis Vakarian and canon compliant to BOTH universes with past Barrix and Vakarian Parents, plus a healthy dollop of shakarian and femVetRyder to provide added flavouring.
Basic Premise:
So we take one absent father c-sec detective with a chip on his shoulder about spectres and... we add to that a disillusioned council spectre who moved to another galaxy to get away from his past. We stick them in a box and then we shake it to give them a bitter, intense friendship-turned-relationship spanning decades.
Where it starts:
Take The Very Best Of Me: Young. Dumb. Invincible. It's 2145 and the biggest concern in Castis Vakarian's life is making it through basic training unscathed. Unfortunately for him, the universe has other plans. Rating: E (Violence and sexual themes) Status: 2/? chapters (11,441 words) - UNPOSTED
House of Anarchy: 2157 - In an assault that will later on be known as the Relay 314 Incident, turian forces occupy the human colony of Shanxi. During the dying days of the conflict, two young soldiers rely upon one another for backup both emotional and physical. But the war is not the only thing that is due to end... Rating: E (Violence, Past Child Abuse, Sexual themes) Status: 1/1 chapters (10,172 words) - COMPLETE READ IT HERE!
The Main Fics:
Beyond Familiar Stars: The stages of grief don't necessarily come in the order you might expect, but having someone to process them with can make all the difference. Even if the person you pick is just a different flavour of screwed up from you. In the years following the settling of Andromeda, Avitus Rix is forced to confront everything this new galaxy has lost him and the few things it'll gain him. Rating: E (Violence, Angst, Torture, Cannibalism, Alcoholism, Past Drug Abuse, Unhealthy Relationships) Status: 12/13 chapters (95,063 words) - IN PROGRESS READ IT HERE!
Follow My Lead: Trapped in a war-torn galaxy, Castis Vakarian wonders about the people who left them for that point beyond familiar stars and what has or will happen to them. Rating: M (Violence, Mental Health Issues, Character Death, Angst) Status: 7/10 chapters (50,940 words) - IN PROGRESS READ IT HERE!
Other Works In The Universe:
Tolerance Tested: Sometimes, Avitus Rix has too much heart for his own good. This time around, he's going to drag Macen down to hell with him though. Failing hell, how about Omega? Otherwise known as the pre-Andromeda Barrix mission fic we all wanted. Rating: E (Sexual themes, Angst) Status: 3/? chapters (17,421 words) - IN PROGRESS READ IT HERE!

Asks! Cuz I’m a greedy B for your OCs. Parable - do the twins have a favorite human tradition? How often do they see pop pop when they’re adults and what’s that relationship like? What’s Castis’ take on his kids bonding to humans? What are Arcellie’s opinion on Saren falling for Cassia? Does Saren think of Ellie as his mom? Fibonacci- what is Castis’ opinion on humans? Did Nihlus tell Ashlyn “I love you” first? What is something Jana does casually that Garrus finds incredibly hot?
I love all the questions!!!!!
Parable
Do the twins have a favorite human tradition?
Cassia likes the tradition of gathering up the entire family to celebrate certain holidays. A close second is giving gifts on holidays, but turians have some holidays and special occasions like that, so it’s not strictly a human thing. I’d say that turians also gather as families, but not usually with everyone, extended family included. For them, that means everyone from the Normandy and their families joins in on the festivities and that’s not too usual for turians. Turians separate work and life, so it’s not often that they get close enough to fellow soldiers, subordinates, or superiors to end up having huge gatherings for holidays. That, and humans have more holidays that call for it than turians. Seriously, we humans celebrate everything, lol.
Being how they were raised, Damocles can’t really say he has experience to compare it to, but from what he’s learned of turian customs, he can say that he really likes how humans tend to embrace changes when compared to turians. Sure, there are still stubborn prejudices and whatnot, but a huge thing is the fact that even with such a powerful military presence, humans don’t actually force their people into mandatory service. We all know turians require at least some time in the military, but humans are like ‘oh, you want to study music? Well, here ya go. Have fun!’ while turian society would rather you serve your people in some way. Sure, Damocles went into a military of sorts with the Wraiths, but he’s happy that it was his decision to do so, not one forced on him and he has an ulterior motive in liking it because he knows that, had they been in turian society, his best friend and love, Aeson, would have had a hard life. He’s not only a traitor’s son, but he just isn’t cut out for combat of any kind despite Damocles’ every attempt to train him. Aeson’s just too passive in nature and Damocles knows with sobering certainty that his friend probably wouldn’t have survived combat if he was ever thrown into it. (Not much of a demand for fishermen in the military, so Aeson would’ve been forced into a position he wouldn’t have been comfortable in)
How often do they see Pop-pop when they’re adults and what’s that relationship like?
Enjoying travel as much as she does, Cassia sees Pop-pop quite often. Usually, if she’s around his neck of the woods, she’ll stop by. Sometimes they can meet on the Citadel or she’ll see him at his home on Palaven, but she’s also really careful not to directly attract attention to herself because of her family’s notoriety so if he says it isn’t safe to visit for whatever reason, she sticks to vidcalls. Their relationship is really close because she tends to follow a more strict code of morals than her brother. Sure, she doesn’t exactly follow rules, but Castis has long since realized that following regulations may not be in that family’s repertoire. Plus, I don’t think Cassia could ever have a bad relationship with someone even if she tried.
Damocles is different, however. We all know how imposing he looks, and that attracts unwanted attention if he ever goes anywhere. Usually, he only visits Pop-pop when he can manage to hitch a ride on a Wraith transport to Palaven, Palaven being a bit of a safe place for the Vakarians thanks to Primarch Victus’ relation and subtle protection towards them. Damocles gets antsy at Pop-pop’s though, because he can’t do anything that may attract attention. He’s explored the area around Pop-pop’s home to the point he could probably walk it blindfolded and there’s only so many extranet games he can play by himself or with Aeson to keep him occupied in his downtime. He’s also a lot like his father in his rebelliousness and though Castis has cooled some to Garrus and Jane’s ways, they still butt heads at times. Damocles, in these cases, can actually be considered worse than his dad and, unlike Garrus who tries to keep the peace for the most part, Damocles won’t give as easily. Damocles is headstrong and lets emotion rule his thinking in almost every setting, so he’s nearly impossible to effect. It’s because of this that Castis, for once, keeps his stricter morals under check so as not to ruin the few chances he gets to see his grandson.
What Castis’ take on his kids bonding to humans?
Honestly, after all the family has gone through, he’s just happy his kids are happy. He’s learned to accept that Garrus will always go against the grain in terms of turian culture and traditions because he’s learned the hard way after losing Valeria and going through the Reaper War that there could always be a day where it’ll be too late to reconcile with the idea of their differences. Solana’s relationship is much easier to accept because she and James are much more traditional (and he’s got experience with human family thanks to how different Jane is to everything he expected). Years ago, he would’ve put up a fight about it, but now he’s realized that it doesn’t matter the species so long as his children are happy. Life’s too short for pettiness, he’s come to realize, and family doesn’t always mean blood.
What are Arcellie’s opinion on Saren falling for Cassia?
Arcanus is just so damn relieved someone’s there to show his son the ropes in life, so to speak. He sees what being raised in a tank has done in terms of his son’s ability to fit into society and Cassia seems the perfect person to show him the good in actually interacting with other people outside of work. Saren makes it hard enough to get along with as stunted as he is already, so he needs that exact opposite in Cassia to balance it out and give Saren a real life he will enjoy, even if he doesn’t immediately know it.
Ellie thinks it’s really cute. She adores Cassia because she’s just so damn lovable and mature for her age. Ellie was initially really worried Saren wasn’t getting the concept of dealing with people on a personal level, but didn’t know how to go about getting him to open up. To tell the truth, she was actually worried about interacting with him at first because she remembered her colossal failure in a relationship with Arcanus in the beginning and didn’t want to cause a rift between herself, Arcanus, and Saren. She’s hesitant in relationships because she spent so much of her life in secret, so the fact that Cassia and Saren seemed to click from the very beginning is a huge sigh of relief because she’s eventually admitted to herself that she sees Saren as a kind of step-son, even with as untraditional as his ‘birth’ was.
Does Saren think of Ellie as his mom?
Good question. I don’t think he’s ever called her ‘mother’ before or put that word to his feelings towards her, but he unintentionally treats her as one. Arcanus is his father in both genetics, but also in guidance and the shared personality they have, but Ellie is different for him. At first, he didn’t have any kind of emotion to associate with her besides an acceptance and a bit of gratitude because of what she was to his father. It didn’t help that Ellie was wary of what she should be for him too, but eventually, he begins to see Ellie as a person separate from his father and she gains confidence that she isn’t going to ‘mess this up’ because she’s so rusty with relationships. Saren now associates guidance of a different kind with Ellie. There’s just some things that a father can’t teach you and, in interacting with Ellie, he’s learned some things that come from having a mother. Sure, most of it is Cassia’s doing, but he’s learned how to love someone from watching his ‘parents.’ He knows how his father is because he technically ‘is’ his father, but he’s learned how to be tender and what devotion looks like from a different person in seeing how Ellie interacts with Arcanus. He actually goes to her at times when he wants to do something nice for Cassia but doesn’t want Cassia to learn of it. Between her and Jane, all his romanticism has pretty much been learned by his ‘mother’ and mother-in-law.
Fibonacci
What is Castis’ opinion on humans?
As Primarch, he is wary of humans. Still so young to the whole of Eros and its politics, he thinks they are too demanding of attention and a place in the government (at least, that was before Sovereign) because it was like they came in and wanted a voice without actually proving they could handle the responsibility. We have to remember that their first act was to wage a small war with his people because they wanted to expand and didn’t think of diplomacy when the turians stood their ground, instead of seeing it as an invitation for battle. He still doesn’t trust many humans and sees undeserving arrogance in many dignitaries, but Jon and Garrus’ belief in him has helped Castis see the good in them. It’s why, after Sovereign’s attack, Castis reached out to King Stephan Hackett to propose trade lines between their peoples. He was happy to learn that the King was closer to Jon than Udina in thinking, so it’s helped him to be more open to humans when it comes to meeting individuals instead of a blanket view of them from what he sees of their representatives.
Did Nihlus tell Ashlin ‘I love you’ first?
Actually, he didn’t outright say it in a human way. Ashlin was the first one to put it to words, but he was courting her for a long time in a turian way with gifts and subvocals. They finally got to that point once he realized his attempts didn’t seem to be getting noticed and learned human poetry to impress her and express his feelings in a way she’d enjoy (she likes poetry in this AU). His poem is pretty much a love confession without saying the word, so it led to Ashlin finally putting the word out there in her response. Really, they were kinda idiots about the whole love thing in the beginning, lol
What is something that Jana does casually that Garrus finds incredibly hot?
Before they’re a pair, he has a weird interest in her hair as well as her eyes. He hasn’t seen many people with long hair like waves of fire or eyes that shift with the colors of the earth (her eyes are hazel). Like many fighters with long hair, she tends to keep it up or done so that it’s out of the way, but she’s just like any other woman and has to brush it. When she does, and he sees it, he’s almost entranced with the way it flows. Fire is powerful to Alysim and the image of someone running their fingers and a comb through it is almost unearthly.
Once they’re together, it’s her little touches that drive him absolutely insane. Turians aren’t touchy by nature and she usually wouldn’t be either in public, but she does it a lot as a way of grounding herself in this new reality. She doesn’t want to lose him like she did her husband, so she’s always reminding herself with touch and even kisses and after a life without any sort of partner to speak of, he’s starved for affection without even knowing it at first. Sure, he’s had touches from his family, but never a romantic partner, and once they’re a pair, they are both very touch-oriented in and outside the bedroom. It’s actually kinda cute how surprised he is by just how good being touched, hugged, and kissed feels even without it ever leading to sex.
Thanks so much for the asks!!! I loved them!!!

DILF squad (Victus, Castis, Sparatus)
DILF SQUAAAAAD
hoo boy here we go, thank you for the food anon
First impression
Victus: For legal reasons, I cannot answer this question.
Castis: ok so...........ngl i heard that castis was in andromeda and the first time i played andromeda it was just a race to the finish line to see castis. it was the only questline i did outside of the main quest (and i'm usually the person doing every little tiny thing). and then i was underwhelmed bc of course i was
Sparatus: oh no look at those green eyes
Impression now
V: Honestly? He's ruining my life. He's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. He's so sad. He makes me wanna cry.
C: he's perfect. he's emotionally stilted. determined. terrible fashion sense but he's committed to it. a caring father who's had a tragic time dealing with the prolonged illness of his wife and a problem child who keeps disappearing and re-appearing with an apparent death wish. he's shattering but he doesn't show it. maybe doesn't even know it. he's a bottom.
S: i am once again thinking unholy thoughts about that bastard laiel sparatus
Favorite moment
V: am i a bad person if i say it's his ass shot on menae but no really the "I'm the Primarch of Palaven?" moment is unparalleled cinematic moments in video games, I get chills just thinking about it
C: i really really really love the conversation between garrus and castis in the homeworlds comic. obviously that comic has done a number on me because i haven't known peace since i read it, but also just...the emotional impact of garrus calling his father and essentially saying "i'm dying." and castis just calmly trying to talk him out of it..... it hits hard.
S: when he gets Big Mad at you for hanging up on the council for the millionth time
Idea for a story
V: i may or may not be writing a story right now about victus and castis meeting after the war and talking about the war and being a father and pushing your sons to be what you need them to be instead of meeting them where they are and discussing old times in their field unit days and acting on old adolescent feelings for each other now that they're old and weary and tired and need Something Good
C: ok well i also have a wip about sidonis rescuing garrus's family on palaven, and it's mostly from sid's perspective, but i'm trying to explore castis's reaction to their conversations. he hears sid talking about garrus (without knowing that's who he is talking about -- sid knows who castis is but not the other way around) and it opens something up in him, makes him have some realizations of his own about his relationship with solana and garrus that he's already been struggling with (more on this below!) as well as putting the war in perspective in a way that sort of opens him up to victus, who's been messaging him from the normandy upon working with garrus and being unable to not be reminded of a young castis, and he messages castis hoping to find some tough love since they used to butt heads a lot in basic about their conflicting styles and he wants someone to be realistic about his situation as primarch, but they end up talking every night as sad dilfs do until they lose contact the night cipritine is attacked which happens to coincide with the whole tuchanka ordeal and..........well they're both spiraling after that and they deserve a very happy castis-vakarian-giving-the-primarch-of-palaven-a-handjob after that
S: that bastard laiel sparatus tells me to eat dirt and i do it wait what
Unpopular opinion
V: oh hmmmm idk i'm so bad at this section i'm sorry
C: I don't even think there are popular opinions about Castis for me to have the unpopular alternative to, so I'm using this as a free space to say that Castis Vakarian has an absolute dump truck ass
S: heads empty no thoughts i am but a vessel for The Urge every time this man is on screen
Favorite relationship
V: Tarquin
C: Garrus
S: i love the way some people write his relationship with Tevos and Valern!!
Favorite headcanon
V: Victus was a cautionary tale in the Vakarian household about Castis's "old friend Adrien" until he started climbing in the ranks and Castis realized Garrus's eyes lit up every time Victus was in the vids and his plan was backfiring
C: based on the way garrus talks about castis in me3, it seems like garrus thinks that it's himself who grew up a bit and comes around to taking his father's approach seriously when he goes to him with the reaper warning that castis takes to fedorian. i like to think that, actually, castis *has* changed a lot. the man threatened to lock up his own son right before he retires (timing can't be a coincidence, the man was exhausted) and then that son disappeared and only reappeared months later on the day of his apparent death on omega, only to survive and then disappear beyond an uncharted mass relay??? i have to imagine that when garrus finally comes around, castis is just... ready to listen now. he doesn't understand his son, but he worries that he won't get another chance. he can't lose him. so he sits down, and he listens.
S: Sparatus is aro ace and he has a mistress but isn't really sure why tbh???? She's very nice and they play chess together
Send me a character and I will answer these prompts about them

My Vakarians headcanons
— Castis is from old respected house from Palaven and his wife is from relatively new house from Invictus. That shows in their characters: Castis is noble, honor through and through, loyal, everything expected from one of the oldest turian clans; neutral good; his wife knows how hard the colonist’s life can be, she’s really hardworking to the point of stupid stubbornness, as half of original Invictus population died because of diseases, she had a little weak health and was worrying about her children’s, she’ll always put her family first, is a pro prize negotiator; chaotic good. (Their children possess all these qualities but in different proportions)
— Their marriage wasn’t arranged (it didn't really benefit the Vakarian family), his parents never really accept her (they thought he definitely could have find much better) to the point they didn't show up to their family gatherings, young Vakarians (Castis was the only child and the proud of the clan even at such young age, so they left hit the clan’s name) stopped sending invites shortly. That was the first and last time Castis rebelled (but nor Garrus, nor Sol know about this). His wife moved to Palaven to get a better education, became an engineer and return home, but Castis and later pregnancy with Garrus messed her life completely (that was probably the only time they worked as allies). Keeping in touch with family light years away is hard, but the only question they asked was ‘Do you love each other?’ before they gave her their approval. Hard life on Invictus can teach you what's really important. That why Invictus colonists always stand out.
— Everyone know and respect Vakarians because they're kind of a historical figure in building Cipritine (Palaven’s capital) and conquering aka uniting all other clans.
— Garrus’s mom was very beautiful: thin waist, golden plates, green eyes. But that's not what Castis fell for. He fell for her determination, kindness, sense of humour with little cockiness. He adored how she always said truth to the face no matter whose.
— Solana took a lot after her mom. Beautiful and stubborn. She even decided to follow her mother footsteps. She’s a promising engineer (she made mods for Garrus’s rifle which he took on Menae) and even Armax Arsenal is interested in her. After wife’s passing it sometimes hurts Castis that they're so alike.
— As Garrus and his faithful trusting little tail Solana got in a lot of trouble in youth, Castis was disappointed as it seems they didn't take a thing after him, his wife just clicked her mandibles remembering how much the three of them use word ‘damn’.
— Solana is incredibly hot and cocky young lady (on public at least) and Garrus is overprotective older brother which once pointed his sniper rifle at one of her admirers.
— Solana and Garrus sometimes take part at neighbours’ wars with people who somehow mess with their mother’s precious garden near their estate. They're two talented tech experts prone to revenge, who also have a good knowledge of law. They always win.
— Castis always wanted what best to their children even if it seemed he crushed their dreams. But they still love each other dearly. The understanding of it all will come to them when they’ll have their own children.
@garrus you seemed interested in the subject)
