[5] 'Father Duty' || Castis Vakarian
[ 1 ], [ 2 ], [ 3 ], [ 4 ] by scent.2002 || Meta
Here we have:
Tumblr media
Take your kids to work day where precious little baby girl Solana (we're still polishing working on Solana and I couldn't decide whether she's younger sister or older sister — I feel like she's younger but also feel like she's older depending on the mood swings).
Garrus verbally and literally pointing out someone's form isn't proper because Dad taught him the proper way and Castis is just 'well, you heard my boy' — ah, yes, more delulu coming your way ♥
Solana is not at all happy to be there but she's the behaved one so she gets to be in daddy's holster.
Tumblr media
Garrus eating off dad's spicier plate because it's 'dad's spicier plate' and he wasn't going to back down to dad saying, "You're too young for this, Garrus. This is too spicy for y—."
Tumblr media
Look at the sheer determination to appease his father and his pride as a Vakarian. NOMNOMNOM LITTLE ANGEL ♥
Tumblr media
Dad making copies of work related files in his omni-tool because Solana decided to play with it and did cute little doodles and blamed it on Garrus.
Garrus gets a time out and doesn't know why. Dad won't tell him.

Okay but like. A thought
Turians start their compulsory military service at fifteen, and they're not allowed to leave military service until they're thirty*
That means that, aside from a minority of early bloomers, they spend the horniest, most hormonal period of their lives in the army. All of them. No exceptions.
So like. There is no way Shepard is the first time Garrus has crushed on a superior officer. Having the hots for your CO and having your Yearning™ subvocals accidentally announce it to your entire unit is practically a rite of passage in Awkward Turian Puberty. It's expected, and forgivable...for a teenager who can't keep his dick behind his plates for longer than five minutes, because he's realising for the very first time that Girls Exist.
Anyway. Garrus who's absolutely dying of cringe for like the whole of ME1 and most of ME2 because he's the wrong side of 25 and still getting inappropriate crushes on authority figures and she's human and they have so many weird little fingers, like fucked-up pyjaks, what is wrong with him? And it's getting a bit ridiculous now anyway like this is the kind of lesson he should've learned when he was nineteen and hit on his pretty, older squad leader and she laughed in his face, but apparently not - and it's so juvenile and even without Wrex around to laugh at him he's - wait hold on Shepard what do you mean blow off steam?
Oh. Oh. Well, alright then. He could be convinced, definitely
* Garrus straight up deserted to go play Batman, y'all

so i did this a while back, finally remembered it, and now i'm posting it
Mass Effect x Dragon Age AU
I did one of these already, sort of, for ME: Andromeda, but this one is set in the Milky Way.
Elaborations below:
Merrill is a quarian who was exiled from the Migrant Fleet. She's looking for a way not to destroy the geth, but to bring them back under quarian control, thinking they're too valuable a resource to just get rid of. Unfortunately, this made many quarians view her as dangerous, and she was exiled for the crime of experimental geth research. Making Merrill a quarian was the first choice I did for this AU, I think it fits really well.
Aveline is an asari. I'd considered krogan or turian, or simply keeping her human, but in the end I went with asari mostly because Aveline always struck me as condescending in the same way many asari are, lol. She's a commando who later moved to the Citadel to join C-SEC.
Isabela is a turian. She's a barefaced turian, meaning she has no association to a colony. Instead of following the typical turian tradition of proudly serving in the Hierarchy's military, Isabela instead ran off to become a space pirate, specializing in smuggling. She frequents the bars around Omega and has earned herself a fearsome reputation among the mercenaries.
Bethany remains a human; she grew up on a colony world with her siblings, and had a relatively peaceful childhood, despite the Alliance constantly badgering her parents to send her and her older sister to their biotic training program.
Marian, also a human, eventually ran away from home to become a mercenary. She resented her father for forbidding her and her siblings from joining the Alliance - not because she was particularly patriotic, but she felt like her father's grudge against the Alliance prevented her and her siblings from receiving the best training possible. Her powerful biotics made her both an asset and a target, and she soon caught the eye of a certain Council Spectre...
Fenris is a drell. He was raised under the Compact, an agreement between the drell and the hanar, and his purpose was to become a bodyguard... And then his training group was attacked by batarian slavers and he was taken captive. For many years, Fenris suffered under the batarians' rule, until he finally managed to escape. Unwilling to return home, he instead roams the galaxy, taking out as many batarian slaving operations as he can.
Anders is a human who escaped from a biotic testing facility run by Cerberus. Though this left him with a grudge against Cerberus, he also hates the Alliance, whom he sees as no better and will also use biotic children as weapons. He dreams of establishing a safe haven for biotics, and is willing to go to increasingly drastic measures to see that dream become a reality.
Varric is a volus. Unlike his business-minded brother, Varric does not spend his days negotiating trade agreements or doing finance consultations. Spending his days at the Afterlife bar on Omega, he's an information broker, and a pretty damn good one at that. With his specially crafted weapon Bianca, he's not too bad in a fight, either.
Carver, much like his older sister, left home to seek out his own path, and ended up joining the Alliance against his parents' wishes. He thrived in the military, quickly climbing the ranks due to his strength and competency. He's being primed for N7 training under the wathcful eye of Spectre Sebastian Vael.
Sebastian is a human, and a Council Spectre (I'm imagining this AU as a sort of nebulous period where humanity isn't as looked down upon as they were at the start of ME1, and there are a fair number of human Spectres running around). A wild child in his youth, his parents sent him to the Alliance to straighten him out, and to their relief, it worked like a charm. He specializes in covert missions and favors sniper rifles and tech powers.

A human captain gets assigned to a full turian crew.
At first they constantly underestimate you, offbursh your orders and don't take you seriously. Because you're just one tiny human, what are you gonna do but bark orders around?
Especially if the crew is more on the older side, turians who were there during the first contact war and are still holding grudges against the humans who embarrassed them in front of the galaxy.
You're not sure what to do, you can request a transfer and go lead a human crew instead but that feels like exactly what the turians want and you're not one to give up easily.
They're not going to follow orders? Easy, you'll just send official emails of their documented disobedience in the military to their families and watch them get scolded by their parents for not upholding the turian honour of public service.
They constantly underestimate you? What's a better way to show them their place then an endurance competition. Sure turians are stronger by nature, have claws, sharp teeth and harder skin. A human in comparison must seem like a harmless kitten that's all soft and squishy.
But humans are the best example of a wolf in sheep clothing, the fact we are persistent hunters that walk slowly after a prey unit it's exhausted beyond running. We don't have sharp teeth so we sharpened rocks and stuck them at the end of sticks to make spears, we don't have tough skin so we melted metals and moulded them into armor.
We are very adaptable. So you decide to take your crew to the Armax Arsenal Arena. No health packs, no extra ammo, and no shields. You against the rest of them in a pvp. At first they're very cocky and give it their all, but you wait.
Wait until they waste their bullets, until their metal shells heat their bodies too much, until they're paranoid scanning every corner and ledge to where you might be hiding. And that's when you finally take them down, one by one you quickly hit them and run, making them chase.
They're too slow, too exhausted form the constant chasing while you reserved your energy. You earned your captain title fair and sqaure and you make sure to show them that by toying with them, slipping past their defences and making their guns malfunction while they're not looking.
Fear isn't a common thing for turians, usually on the battlefield they embrace death with pride. That they've done their part, fought until the end. But in here? With you? They feel true terror at being reduced to a bunch of helpless birds, guns are useless against an enemy you can't spot. They can't endure being in this constant state of stress and alert, their bodies reading for a fight that never comes.
By the end of them, when just one of them remains, he's so beyond exhausted that it doesn't take much for you to push him on the ground and sit smugly on top of his chest. Your gun pressed against his neck as sweat glistens on your skin.
He admits defeat.
In the aftermath, you've witnessed how their respect grew for you. How they boasted about their human captain against other turian crews and pridefully retold the story of you taking them down one by one. Instead of their defeat filling them with shame, it filled with awe and determination, there's so much more they can learn from you.
In a way too, they've become a bit more protective of you. If a turian tries to give you shit for first contact war, they immediately insult their honour and shut them down. They're careful of your human skin not to scratch you by accident, cautious of their claws whenever they hand you something.

A Turian with a thing for humans meeting a naive, starry-eyed citizen during their first time off of Earth and immediately wanting to rut their brains out. He had just resigned himself to never finding a human like the actors/actresses in his vids, getting protected and then taken advantage of by an older Turian that's helping them get used to alien culture and all the new dangers of traveling the cosmos. After all, the humans you're going to find are mostly military and not the idealized pornified idea of a naive human so trusting of a more experienced species and barely putting up a fight once they realize they like what's happening to them.
But then he runs into them, eagerly looking around the docking bay of a rinky-dink planet port and ooh-ing and ah-ing over the most mundane things. Some of their questions are so stupidly cute: Can Turians see in the dark if their eyes glow? Salarians are so moist-looking, do they dry out if they're not somewhere humid? How does a Batarian wink?
He answers as best he can without letting on he's smirking, and when they repeat his name a few times to try and say it correctly he gets the urge to see how well they can scream it in his bed. It's so easy to lure them to get a drink, giving them something he insists is mildly intoxicating to humans when it's basically a cocktail thats 50% aphrodisiac and 50% hard liquor. Sorry, he must've overestimated how well humans can tolerate alien drinks...here, his crew has roomy cabins and they'd be fine to have a temporary stowaway while they sleep it off.
When his men see him and a very intoxicated human with a strong scent of a pheromone cocktail on them, the crew rolls their eyes and just tells him that as long as it doesn't interfere with their work on the ship, he can keep his "pet human".
The second he's alone with them, he's eagerly taking their clothes off and exploring every inch of them. He's doing it. He's touching a human and they're even softer than he thought: their skin, their fringe, their tongue (he legit opens their mouth to gently poke and investigate what a human tongue feels like).
When they start panting and nervously ask what he's doing, he just chuckles and ruts against them while pulling every move from his favorite vids to make them wet. The little fleshy button there, and those pert buds on their chest, that's what you use to make a human woman melt in your hands. He'll teach them how to make a Turian male feel good too; after all, that's all they need to do from now on. It'll be nice to have them to come back to after a mission so he can "destress" and learn so much more about humans" softness and sweetness.

Well you can blame a late night browse and demily for a new follow
Im curious who your OCs are? Id love lil info dumps about them and/or just one thing you find most interesting about them
thank you!! And well if you're coming over from demily's blog then I'm assuming you like Mass Effect-- and if you don't, I'm very sorry but I am going to talk about more of my Mass Effect OCs. It's two that I haven't drawn yet, but they live in my heart and I want to draw them someday.
Lavinia Kazian is a young turian who moved alone to the Citadel after completing her mandatory military service to escape what she felt was a stifling, strict culture back home on Palaven, and to escape her stifling, strict family of decorated soldiers. She didn't realize how much harder life would be without her family's social network or money to rely on, but she's stubborn and resourceful and determined to make an independent life work. Her rotating schedule of part-time jobs includes working as a club bouncer, a dockworker, and a restaurant delivery driver on her very own hoverbike. She meets Siwa by accidentally hitting her with her bike while making a delivery-- in Lavi's defense, Siwa was jaywalking and really should have looked both ways (she isn't seriously hurt).
Miellera T'Vola is the heir (but crucially not the sole heir) to a multi-generational asari empire: the T'Vola Fruit Preserves Company, a millennia-old business valued in the billions of credits. She and her older sister have spent their lives as inseparable, carefree socialites, appearing in fashion magazines and trashy tabloids alike, but recently her sister has been trying to rehab her image as part of preparing to step into the role of CEO, and that means leaving her younger sister behind more and more. Lonely and in a personal crisis she doesn't want to examine too deeply (it would totally bum her out), Mimi has been throwing her energy--and plenty of her family's credits--into a solo pop music career. Her name, notoriety, and actual genuine talent as a performer helped her hit the charts with a splash-- but the extranet has erupted in controversy over her recent choice to wear a partial quarian helmet as part of a stage costume, to artistically distort her voice for a song. Will her career recover? Will she learn a valuable lesson about cultural appropriation? Will she get uninvited from this year's Illium Fashion Week galas??

A small comic strip with Wrex and Garrus with a reference to the Lord of the Rings. Timeline ME1
Once I came across a meme on Tumblr that Garrus and Wrex are literally Legolas and Gimli placed in space. And I can partly agree with this, their mutual skirmishes are indeed similar in some respects, but only during the events of the first part of the game . .
Read the whole text:
In fact, they knew each other even before Shepard’s arrival at the Citadel. Wrex was often detained by C-Sec for a variety of reasons, and that's where he met future Archangel. Wrex's love of teasing every turian and salarian he met could not bypass Garrus too, but unlike other turians, who usually silently endured sarcastic krogan's insults until the last, Garrus always said Wrex back without fear and constraint.
Wrex had already met Garrus's father before when the second one was a young C-Sec officer, and he couldn't help noticing how similar and different the younger and older Vakarian are at the same time. But he definitely liked the younger one much more, because Garrus, unlike his father, was not devoid of a sense of humor and self-irony.
Wrex had never seen Garrus in combat, but the latter's reputation spoke for itself. As a whole, before meeting Shepard, Wrex already had some impression of the turian.
"Youngster, what to take from him so far. He’s obviously green yet, but he'll definitely do some good”
Once on the Normandy, Wrex didn’t even think to stop openly teasing Garrus with or without a reason. As Shepard's constant companions in combat and spending most of their free time in the hold, they were side by side with each other almost all the time.
Wrex also noticed that the turian quickly won over not only him. Shepard regularly went down to the hold to chat with Garrus about a variety of things and, sometimes, stayed there long. Since her childhood, the turians were the most unusual, interesting and at the same time frightening race for her, that she was so eager to learn more about. All the books were studied to the holes, the extranet was rummaged through, and her father, who had already encountered them, was asked all sorts of questions.
During his years at C-Sec, Garrus had dealt with almost all known races, including humans, but he knew little about the latter and mostly negative. And this is not surprising, because after The First Contact War, humans and the turians were hostile to each other, and many people raised their children, cultivating in them hostility to an alien race. Fortunately, this did not affect Shepard, so as Garrus who was always neutral to humans. Her interest in his people was unexpected for him, but he readily answered all her questions time after time. Later, as he got used to the new environment and his new superiors, he dared to ask Shepard questions himself: about humans, about herself, about their mission. The interest was mutual, five-minute conversations eventually turned into half-hour ones, and sometimes they completely lost track of time. Well, Wrex, being nearby, now and then put his two cents.
The only one of Shepard's companions who was clearly unfriendly to Garrus, and to the other aliens on board, was Ashley. While in the hold, she tried to ignore the aliens next to her, but it was impossible not to notice how tense she always was, and how much she was disgusted by all these non-human races. And while she was more or less neutral towards Tali and Liara, given that neither of them often caught her eye, then Garrus and Wrex were much more unlucky. She didn't hesitate to speak disparagingly of them in their presence, talking to Shepard or any of her new friends on board. She didn't answer Garrus' questions about weapons or the mission, and didn't even look up, as if he wasn't even there. They spoke only on missions, exchanging standard phrases in battle. Garrus simply put up with her attitude in his direction, the sneers and hurtful words from her and her cronies, but would never say a word against her. Especially a woman. Especially a woman of another race. With Wrex, by the way, Ashley did’t dare to treat like that, and therefore the turian was the only easy target for her. Wrex had long taken his behavior for softness, and generally admired his endurance, so he often stood up for Garrus if he was around. By the way, after one incident on board, Ashley changed her anger to mercy, and the open taunting from her side stopped.
- If I were you, I'd bite their heads off a long time ago. What are you, lad, pissing in front of some pyjaks?
- I just don't want to cause conflicts on an alien ship, Wrex.
Wrex could have died on Virmire. Infuriated by Shepard's decision to destroy Saren's krogan-growing laboratories, he nearly shot her. The situation was extremely tense. All the companions, including Garrus and the salarians, were on alert, waiting for any signal from Shepard to eliminate the problem in the form of an enraged krogan. But there was no signal. During the entire flight, Shepard got to know Wrex enough to understand that the information about a possible cure for the genophage simply clouded his mind. Convinced that this was definitely not the future he would have wished for his people, Wrex came around and lowered his gun.
When he returned to the Normandy, he went to Garrus first, who, somehow in his own sad way, kept glancing at the empty space next to the armory.
- Would you really shoot me?
- You pointed a gun at Shepard, Wrex, I'd have to. But the Normandy would definitely be more boring without you.
- Huh, well, if so, then I forgive you.
Much later, after getting valuable information from Vigil on Ilos, passing through the Conduit and ending up on the Citadel, the team splited up, and Shepard with Garrus and Wrex went to the Citadel Tower on foot to finally deal with Saren and put an end to this story. But that was just the beginning.
Wrex did not know then how much the young turian would mean to him in the future, how much he and Shepard would do for him and the entire krogan race, and how much, for the first time in his life, he would regret that the krogan lived so long and the turians and humans so unforgivably little. Their relationship wasn't always smooth at first. Old grievances of the past years kept popping up in conversations. But they found common ground rather quickly, and during the time they spent together, they were able to understand themselves and each other better.
And yes, getting back to the subject of the post, the relationship of Garrus and Wrex really somewhat resembles the relationship of Legolas and Gimli from The LotR, but only at the beginning of the journey, when their friendship was just starting, dark times were still ahead, and their jokes were above the belt :D . .
I almost died while translating this text from my native language into English, but I made it
Many of my future posts will be plot and informative, and I will try to write it in such a way that it will be interesting for you to read it and delve into my headcanons ♥ . .

specreqs 2024 fic recs
I was so happy to participate in this year's @spectre-requisitions-exchange, and I have a round of recs to share!!
what I received:
Going Up by Kahika, G, Ashley/Garrus
A wonderful story showing Ashley and Garrus’s developing relationship. I love how the similarities between them are pulled out, and this is just so lovely and romantic. I am such a fan of Ashley is written here, she is strong and she cares so much. I can't say enough about this gift!!
what I wrote:
follow me into the dark, M, F!Shep/Tali
“So are you,” she says. She’s trying to buy time. She does the same thing, every day. Tali doesn’t bite. “I trust him,” Shepard finally adds. They watch the water lap at the rocks, the way it has for millennia, the way it will for even more. Shaping the world wave by wave. Unless they lose. “Him,” Tali says slowly. It’s bitter in her mouth. Shepard and Tali, after Rannoch.
factors of safety, T, Tali/Adams
Tali gets crushes. On people who are suave and charming and would fit right in on the screen of a net drama. And if she's being honest, Engineer Adams is none of these things. He is human, he is older than her, and he's an engineer. Lights, camera, action.
(I love my little engineers)
some amazing fics
One Night in Nos Astra by goodnightxgoodbye, T, Kaidan/Liara
I absolutely loved the sense of nostalgia with this fic!! There is a real sense of comfort between Kaidan and Liara, and the details here are just beautiful.
The Crack in Everything by FerindenCadash, T, F!Shep/Ashley
Again, I love how Ashley is depicted as she's struggling with her faith following Shepard's return from the dead. The tone of this piece is just wonderful, and the dynamic between Shepard and Ashley is so perfect to read.
Reception by Vidra_on_the_Rocks, G, Human Refugee Teen & Turian Citadel Guard
This piece is written in the style of a magazine article, and it is so creative! The tone is perfect, and the family formed between these two is just so heartwarming.
Seeing a Salarian About a Ship by SaintMidnight, T, Kaidan/Coats
This fic has the perfect sense of domesticity for these two, starting a new life after the war and settling into things. It's such a hopeful fic, and there's an amazing "we're buying a home together" sense throughout the whole thing. Absolutely loved it!!
I'll probably have many more recs as I work through the amazing collection, but I am so excited to keep reading! And it was an absolute blast participating; can't wait for next year :)

[6] 'Father Duty' Pt. 2 || Castis Vakarian
I, II, III, IV, V, by scent.2002 || Meta
Here we have:
Little Garrus stuffing dad's drawers with his blankie because someone has been bring home work a little too much. Needless to say, Castis feels equally touched as he is troubled because Garrus has thrown his stuff away to make room for his blankie.
Tumblr media
Itty, bitty Garr-bear sharing his desserts for dad but ends up taking a huge bite and is now in the dilemma of whether dad would notice or he'd have to take one for the team and eat all of it.
Tumblr media
Hydration is very important. Specially if you're a very young Turian caught in the adventure of making sure dad's OK. The drink was supposed to be Castis'.
Tumblr media
And so was the sandwich — or what's left of it. Castis is not a fan of saliva-soggy bread. [ I wasn't sure if there's an equivalent of sandwich for Turians.]
Tumblr media
Dad's way of saying he's both proud and love the itty, bitty monster baby.
Tumblr media
I'm having dad withdrawal. This may be a little too wholesome for Castis, but I'm pretty sure he did his best. With how Garrus turned out. I know most of his personality is more from mom as per the comics, but I'm also sure that he's got a lot of Castis in him too.
Anyway, have some fatherly sweetness from husband #3, Castis Vakarian.

In all of my playthroughs, Tali and Garrus end up together. So, whenever I play Tali's "date" on the Citadel DLC, I imagine her excitedly telling my Shepard how she's living her teen Fleet&Flotilla dreams since the protagonists are actually a turian male and a quarian female. I find it really cute and it matches so well with how my Shepard is like an older sister to Tali ❤️

Everybody Loses It - Chapter Update
Tumblr media
(commissioned art of Rhys Shepard and Kaidan Alenko by @xla-hainex)
Everybody Loses It
Summary: One of the first human biotics, prothean specialist Dr. Rhys Shepard has fought for years to distance himself from the events at BAaT and distance himself from his parents and their military careers. When a prothean beacon is discovered on Eden Prime, he snatches the chance to finally prove himself.
Until the geth attack and he comes face to face with a part of his past he thought long dead...
Chapter 4: One Step Closer
Excerpt:
"I'm no Indiana Jones, Ryder, and I’m certainly no Johnny Cash." Out of the darkness to Rhys' left, a familiar voice calls from the shadows, "They named the dog Indiana, as I recall." Another memory flash returns - secret movie nights at BAaT, stolen snacks from the kitchens, and whispered commentary as they sit in the dark - and Rhys pinches his nose.  Of course, Kaidan would remember that.  A glance to his left finds Kaidan slipping from the shadows and Williams is behind him.  That isn’t a surprise as she joined the Normandy crew right after Eden Prime, but the three figures following her - a quarian, a turian, and a krogan - are unexpected.  The purple and silver hooded quarian is the first of the three to speak.  "What's a dog?" To Rhys' surprise, it’s the krogan who answers.  "Varren-like creature, but smaller and with fur." "Fur?" Williams clarifies, "Animal hair." "Ah."
Read Chapter | Read From Beginning | Read Series
Just a few things to note:
1) Rhys is a slightly older Shepard, a combination of a spacer and Earthborn background, and non-military. He goes off to college and graduate school and becomes a prothean specialist
2) He and Kaidan have known one another since BAaT. They have a history together.
3) Kaidan is the Commander of the Normandy. He essentially takes over the role of Shepard in the ME canon timeline
This story isn't a retelling of all of game 1, but will use bits and pieces of it that fit for their story.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed writing them!
For anyone interested, Rhys has two playlists on Spotify.
This one is associated with his story The Barn called Shore Leave on Mindoir
And this is his general playlist that I listen to while writing for him. It may change some as his story continues.
If you have any questions about Rhys, feel free to drop an ask! I love to talk about my characters! :)
Enjoy!

Doubt
https://archiveofourown.org/works/48786430
Summary:
This has been kicking around in my head since I heard Garrus say " "Maybe even find out what a turian-human baby looks like."
There were many things Garrus had felt in his life. Pride, arrogance, nervousness—but doubt, this was something new. It wasn't an emotion he'd experienced before. Like most turians, Garrus was trained to shake it away.
Yet holding the tiny bundle in his arms that he and Shepard had created flooded him with doubt. A child that shouldn't exist but thanks to Cerberus playing God, here he was, asleep in his father's arms.
David Vakarian looked like any other turian infant, but subtle changes to his features showed his human heritage.
What trouble would David get into as he got older?

Garrus wasn’t jealous.
He liked Lex. He respected her–admired her, even.
And true, he also thought Lex was beautiful. He didn’t have a human fetish, but there was something about her that went so much deeper than appearances. The way she commanded attention. The way everyone turned to look at her. That kind of presence–that power–was intoxicating in its own way. He was cocky, but he knew what to be cocky about. He knew his strengths and played to them. Lex played to everything and anything with a devastating amount of self-assuredness. Or suicidality. It was hard to tell sometimes.
He glanced back out the windows that looked down into the shuttle bay. They’d created a makeshift firing range there to test their weapons and help the team blow off steam in between missions and long stints at the Citadel. It was Kelly's idea, since half of the ground team needed anger management lessons and this was as close as they would get.
There was no real danger to it. Nothing short of actual AA guns could pierce the Normandy's hull and they used soft-polymer rounds for safety in close quarters, so the most anyone was risking was a painful bruise. Of course, Lex loved it. She cared for her rifles like they were her children and she never wasted an opportunity to tinker with them.
But she was practicing with Thane.
Garrus sighed and pushed away from the window. It bothered him and it bothered him that it bothered him. Lex also practiced with him and with Grunt and Zaeed and she and Jack challenged each other to trick shots when they weren’t being supervised.
Hell, he liked the assassin. Respected him, even. It seemed like there was a sore lack of good people in the universe and few tried half as hard as Thane did to be one.
So why this? This irrational annoyance. This irritation. He couldn’t help but think back to Oraka in Chora’s Den moping over Sha’ira and it didn’t do great things for his ego.
Garrus was so distracted he didn’t even hear the elevator ping.
“Hey, I was wondering where you’d gotten to,” Jon said as he stepped off. “I looked in the main battery and thought something must have gone horribly wrong to drag you away from your terminal. What’s up?”
Garrus straightened, looking away quickly from the shuttle bay. “Nothing,” he said. “I just came down here to talk to the engineers about the power draw from the new guns.”
Jon leaned against the opposite bulkhead and then glanced out the window, at his sister who was listening to Thane explain something to her with rapt attention. “Uh huh.”
It was more of a grunt than words, loaded with as much skepticism as the older of the Shepard twins could muster.
Before Garrus could make good his escape, Jon spoke again: “You two are a lot alike, you know.”
Garrus gave him a dubious look. “How?”
“Well for one, you’re both dumbasses,” Jon said, surprising a laugh out of the turian, who then reached up to rub the sore side of his face. The man smiled, only half apologetic. “My sister tells me everything and I can count on one hand how many times she’s said she loves me. So, if you’re waiting for her to make the first move, you’ll be waiting for a while.”
Spirits, they were so unmistakably related. Jon might have been the diplomat of the pair but that was only by default, because Lex’s idea of diplomacy involved a dictionary of curse words and probably at least one explosion.
Garrus glanced back down at the shuttle bay, at Lex. “I’m sure she wants something closer to home…”
“And closer to home is someone else with scales? And hallucinogenic saliva?” Jon snorted. “Garrus. Think of it like this. You’re up here pining for a woman who would have thrown her whole life–her whole career–away to go with you to Omega. I can tell you right now, Lex wouldn’t do that for anyone else. Maybe not even me. So the only thing in your way is you.”
He had a point. He usually did, but this was a particularly annoying example.
"You're her brother, aren't you supposed to be threatening me? Not trying to set us up?" Garrus asked, with humor.
Jon laughed. "When we were sixteen one of the Reds decided to cop a feel and Lex almost beat him to death with a datapad. I don't need to come to her rescue. Yours, maybe. But not hers."
