Grilled Onion Guacamole
Ripe avocados have the best flavor, and mixing them with onion and garlic that have mellowed and sweetened on the grill enhances their taste. Learn to make Grilled Onion Guacamole.
I don’t follow sports yet always know when the Super Bowl is approaching. It seems that in the week before the game, every grocery store puts avocados and tortilla chips on sale. I just bought large, not-yet-ripe ones yesterday, so it seems an apt time to share my guacamole recipe in my Twice as Tasty column for the Flathead Beacon. For shoppers, avocados no longer have a season, as various…

FIREWOOD FOR SALE IN ORANGE COUNTY
Are you looking for firewood for sale in Orange County? Whether you're preparing for a cozy night by the fireplace or gearing up for a backyard bonfire, finding quality firewood is crucial. In this guide, we'll dive into everything you need to know about sourcing, choosing, and using firewood in Orange County. From understanding different types of wood to storage tips and safety advice, we've got you covered.
Understanding Firewood
Firewood is not just wood you burn; it's a key ingredient for creating warmth and ambiance in your home. Knowing the basics about firewood can help you make informed decisions and get the best value for your money.
Types of Firewood Available
There are numerous types of firewood, each with its unique properties. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right wood for your needs.
Hardwood vs Softwood
Hardwoods, like oak and hickory, burn longer and hotter, making them ideal for home heating. Softwoods, such as pine and fir, ignite quickly and are great for kindling but burn faster.
Popular Firewood Types in Orange County
In Orange County, popular firewood types include eucalyptus, avocado wood, and citrus wood. Each type has its own burning characteristics and aroma, enhancing your firewood experience.
Benefits of Using Firewood
Using firewood has several advantages, making it a preferred choice for many homeowners.
Economic Benefits
Firewood can be a cost-effective heating option, especially if sourced locally or if you have access to fallen trees on your property.
Environmental Benefits
Wood is a renewable resource. When harvested sustainably, firewood can be an environmentally friendly heating source, reducing your carbon footprint.
Lifestyle Benefits
There's nothing quite like the crackling sound of a wood fire to create a cozy atmosphere. It's perfect for gatherings, adding a rustic charm to your home.
Where to Buy Firewood in Orange County
Finding a reliable source of firewood is essential. Here are some options to consider.
Local Suppliers
Local suppliers often provide seasoned firewood that is ready to burn. You can find them at farmers' markets, garden centers, or specialized firewood retailers.
Online Marketplaces
Websites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and local classified ads are great places to find firewood. Just be sure to check reviews and ask questions about the wood's quality.
How to Choose the Right Firewood
Choosing the right firewood ensures you get the most efficient burn and value for your money.
Seasoned vs Green Firewood
Seasoned firewood has been dried for at least six months, reducing moisture content and ensuring a cleaner, hotter burn. Green firewood, on the other hand, contains more moisture and can produce more smoke and less heat.
Determining Wood Quality
Look for wood that is free from mold, pests, and has a uniform color. High-quality firewood should have a low moisture content and sound hollow when knocked together.
Quantity and Pricing
Firewood is typically sold by the cord or fraction of a cord. Ensure you're getting a fair price by comparing rates from multiple suppliers.
Storing Firewood
Proper storage extends the life of your firewood and keeps it dry and ready to use.
Indoor Storage Tips
Store small quantities of firewood indoors in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid storing large amounts inside due to the risk of pests and mold.
Outdoor Storage Tips
Keep your firewood stack off the ground and covered with a tarp to protect it from rain. Ensure there is adequate airflow to prevent moisture buildup.
Safety Tips for Using Firewood
Safety is paramount when using firewood. Always use a fire screen to prevent sparks from escaping and never leave a fire unattended. Regularly clean your chimney to prevent creosote buildup, which can cause chimney fires.
DIY Firewood Cutting and Splitting
For those who enjoy a hands-on approach, cutting and splitting your own firewood can be rewarding and cost-effective.
FAQs
What Types of Firewood Are Available for Sale in Orange County?
In Orange County, you can find a variety of firewood types suitable for different needs. The most popular types include: Oak: Known for its long burn time and high heat output, oak is a favorite for both fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. Hickory: Offers a strong heat output and a pleasant aroma, making it ideal for both heating and cooking. Maple: Burns cleanly with a moderate heat output, making it a versatile choice for various uses. Fruitwoods (Apple, Cherry): These are excellent for cooking and smoking meats, imparting a sweet and mild flavor. Pine: While it burns quickly and is not ideal for long-term heating, pine is often used for kindling due to its easy ignition. Each type of wood has unique characteristics that make it suitable for different purposes, whether you're looking for heating, cooking, or simply enjoying a cozy fire.
How Should Firewood Be Stored to Ensure It Stays Dry and Ready to Use?
Proper storage of firewood is crucial to ensure it remains dry and ready for use. Follow these tips for optimal storage: Elevate the Wood: Keep firewood off the ground using pallets or a firewood rack to prevent moisture absorption. Cover the Top: Use a tarp or firewood cover to protect the wood from rain and snow, but leave the sides open for airflow. Ventilation: Stack the firewood in a way that allows air to circulate, which helps in the drying process and prevents mold and mildew. Location: Store the firewood in a sunny, well-ventilated area away from your home to reduce the risk of pests. Seasoning: Ensure the wood is seasoned by storing it for at least six months before use to reduce moisture content and enhance burning efficiency. Following these guidelines will keep your firewood dry, efficient, and ready for use.
What Are the Benefits of Buying Seasoned Firewood?
Seasoned firewood, which has been dried for an extended period, offers several benefits: Higher Heat Output: Seasoned wood burns hotter, providing more warmth compared to unseasoned wood. Efficient Burning: It burns more efficiently, meaning you use less wood for the same amount of heat. Reduced Creosote Buildup: Dry wood produces less creosote, a tar-like substance that can build up in chimneys and pose a fire hazard. Less Smoke: Properly seasoned wood generates less smoke, making for a more pleasant and cleaner burn. Easier Ignition: Dry wood lights more easily, reducing the hassle of starting a fire. Buying seasoned firewood ensures a better burning experience and enhances safety in your home.
How Much Firewood Should I Purchase for the Winter Season?
The amount of firewood you need depends on several factors, including your heating requirements, frequency of use, and the size of your fireplace or stove. As a general guideline: Occasional Use: For occasional use in a small fireplace or for ambiance, a half-cord (approximately 64 cubic feet) may be sufficient. Regular Use: For regular heating in a medium-sized home, one to two cords (128 to 256 cubic feet) are typically recommended. Heavy Use: For primary heating in a large home or constant use, you may need three or more cords (384+ cubic feet). Assess your heating needs and consult with your firewood supplier to determine the optimal amount for your situation.
Are There Any Restrictions or Regulations on Firewood in Orange County?
Yes, there are certain regulations and guidelines to be aware of when purchasing and using firewood in Orange County: Transport Restrictions: Due to pest control measures, there may be restrictions on transporting firewood across county or state lines. Ensure you're buying locally sourced firewood to comply with these regulations. Air Quality Regulations: Orange County is part of a larger air quality management district with rules on wood-burning during certain weather conditions. Check local air quality alerts to ensure you are in compliance. Permits: Some areas may require permits for cutting and gathering firewood. Always check with local authorities before collecting your own firewood. Being aware of and adhering to these regulations ensures you stay compliant and environmentally responsible.
What Is the Best Way to Light a Fire Using Firewood?
Lighting a fire with firewood involves several steps for a successful and efficient burn: Preparation: Gather small pieces of kindling, fire starters, and a few larger logs of seasoned firewood. Building the Base: Place crumpled newspaper or a commercial fire starter in the center of the fireplace or fire pit. Adding Kindling: Arrange small pieces of kindling in a teepee or log cabin structure over the fire starter. Lighting the Fire: Light the fire starter and kindling using a long match or lighter. Adding Logs: Once the kindling is burning well, gradually add larger pieces of firewood, being careful not to smother the flames. Maintaining Airflow: Ensure there is enough space between the logs for air to circulate, which helps the fire burn efficiently. Following these steps will help you light a fire easily and maintain a steady burn.
Can Firewood Be Delivered to My Home in Orange County?
Yes, many suppliers in Orange County offer firewood delivery services. When arranging for delivery, consider the following: Delivery Fees: Some suppliers may charge a delivery fee based on distance or the amount of firewood purchased. Stacking Services: Ask if the supplier offers stacking services, and if so, whether there is an additional charge. Delivery Schedule: Schedule the delivery at a convenient time and ensure there is a suitable location for the supplier to unload the firewood. Quality Assurance: Verify the quality and type of firewood being delivered to ensure it meets your needs. Using delivery services can save time and effort, making it easier to keep your firewood supply stocked throughout the season.
What Should I Look for When Choosing a Firewood Supplier in Orange County?
When selecting a firewood supplier, consider the following factors to ensure you receive quality wood and reliable service: Reputation: Look for suppliers with positive reviews and a good reputation in the community. Wood Quality: Ensure the supplier offers seasoned, high-quality wood that is free from pests and diseases. Variety: Choose a supplier that offers a range of wood types to suit your specific needs. Delivery Options: Check if the supplier provides delivery services and whether they include stacking. Pricing: Compare prices from different suppliers to ensure you are getting a fair deal. These 5 Big Mistakes You Are Doing With Your Fridge.-Read Full News TO Know The Reviews.
There are proper and improper methods for food storage. For instance, although certain vegetables must be kept chilled, others must be stored at room temperature. Certain cooking oils may be left out on the counter, while others need to be kept in the refrigerator. You can be using the wrong containers, and even some of your items that say they are outdated aren’t truly expired. You don’t want to let anything go to waste, especially because food storage is limited.
We’ve done the research to determine the best methods to store your food to ensure that it tastes great and keeps for the longest possible time. The solutions to 10 typical kitchen storage errors are provided here.
You may be surprised to learn that there isn’t a national law defining what expiration dates truly represent. Expiration dates frequently represent quality control rather than nutritional value or safety. How can you tell if the food you’re eating is healthy? Check out the USDA recommendations, then trust your instinct, your sight, and your nose.
Tumblr media
You’re discarding your food that has “expired”
Smell: If something smells good and was stored well, it probably is safe to consume. Sight: When it comes to fresh foods like vegetables, don’t allow your sight deceive you. Nothing is damaged by a few bumps or bruises. Avoid canning the cans: Food in cans has a long shelf life. Even a can that’s started to rust should still be alright, as long as it isn’t bulging and the seal is intact. Examine the package, utilise your senses, prepare food properly, and don’t allow the perfect become the enemy of the good. Understanding “expiration” dates correctly might help you avoid throwing away food and money at the same time.
You wrap leftovers in plastic to save them.
Bee’s Wrap could be the solution if you’re tired of tossing away throwaway food wrap but still want to keep food fresh. Beeswax and cotton were used to create this reusable food wrap.
It’s made to be unwrapped and used as a placemat after you make a sandwich on top of it in your kitchen. Bee’s Wrap is excellent for storing food as well. Creator Sarah Kaeck, a devoted home baker, said that it will help keep bread moist and crispy. It’s also fantastic for covering jars and bowls (squeeze some Bee’s Wrap onto the top of a container and the warmth of your fingers will soften the wax just enough to make a seal). Other great uses include wrapping cheese, half of an avocado, half of a lemon, and covering jars and bowls.
Then, just wash it with cold water (soap is good, but warm water dissolves the wax), hang-dry, and use it again. If you use it a few times a week, it should last for approximately a year
Tumblr media
You shouldn’t be cooling these items, yet you are.
Onions, potatoes, garlic, avocado, tomatoes, bananas, stone fruit, bread, pastries, melons, spices, honey, peanut butter, apples, coffee, eggs, butter, condiments, dressings, soy sauce, and hot sauce shouldn’t ever (or should only be done sparingly), while refrigeration actively worsens the flavour of some foods. Surprised?
You’re storing your food in the improper containers.
We put to the test the most popular glass and plastic food storage containers on the market to see which one was the best. We packed them back together, dumped them onto a linoleum floor, microwaved them, discoloured them, pried them apart, and many other things.
The best glass container is Pyrex’s Ultimate 10-Piece Glass Storage Set, which is made entirely of glass and has glass lids with white silicone trim. Both food and glass won’t spill or break. Although the silicone on the lid will discolour, a spin through the dishwasher will make it spotless. It has a vent for microwave reheats and may be used in a prepared oven as long as the food is defrosted.
Best plastic container: Easy Find by Rubbermaid Lids containers won’t spring a leak until you shake them forcefully, and drops aren’t a concern unless the container happens to land on its side or a corner. While the set is dishwasher- and microwave-safe and comes with a lifetime warranty, no plastic container is oven-safe. This set shouldn’t be frozen since expanding food might cause the top to pop off.

You lack knowledge regarding cooking oil storage
Different cooking oils made from fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds require varying amounts of storage. Oil will oxidise when exposed to air, light, or heat, finally going rancid. Certain cooking oils may be kept at room temperature, but others perform better when kept in the refrigerator.
Corn and canola oils: They keep well in a cool, dark cupboard, or you may put them in the refrigerator if it takes you longer than a year to finish a bottle. Olive oil: Storing olive oil on or next to a stove will definitely cause it to soon go rancid. This is especially true if the container is exposed to direct sunlight. Put it in the coldest, darkest spot in your home or use a smaller glass container in the kitchen.
If kept firmly closed, away from heat and light, peanut oil can last up to two years. The shelf life of peanut oil may be increased yet more by refrigeration. Coconut oil is quite stable and has a two-year or longer shelf life when stored at room temperature. Delicate oils that are especially vulnerable to rancidity include avocado, grapeseed, hazelnut, sesame, truffle, walnut, safflower, and sunflower. This is especially true if they are exposed to excessive light or heat. After opening, refrigeration is advised. These oils can last up to six months when kept cool.

Can't tell if it's the weather, the fuckwaffle in my neck, my hormones, the fish oil, or all three conspiring against me. All four will cause something in the migraine family.
Put a headband on or a hat that gets ever tighter and tell me how you feel. Tell me if crystals heal that.
Onward and onward.
I'm wanting to do things there's just too much pain in the way.
Have been good in the not shopping unless it's food, sundries, storage tubs, or replacing something worn out department.
Got a pair of action figure sized Daft Punk heads coming. I was looking at a pair of earrings to make charms out of but the reviews said the plating comes off easily. I can push mold the helmets and use metallic clay to make what I want. Won't be selling them, I just want some for me.
I like my avocado and baguette charm on my bracelet, I just want helmets so the food can go into a food themed project.
hint at the ending of Miraculous Ladybug but not exactly SPOILERS but pretty damn close between pics

Marinette's nightmare is prophetic in a way.
Some of the little side character stuff will be debated for a long time, like Julika's stuff and does she get it from taking after a parent?
It wasn't a previous season but just a couple of episodes previous when Kagami finds out what she finds out and then she tells someone and it's like damn bitch I hope you can trust who you told.
Well, is that fan theory true or not?
Parental issues anyone but Marinette?
And the other fan theory about ___ becoming ___ Fuck you to the asteroid belt or Jupiter at least because the moon and even Mars is too close but it's a good set up incase they get another run and it works even if they don't.

Scientific Studies Show Drinking Green Tea May Help You Lose Weight
Cetechins are a sub-class of flavonoids, or antioxidant compounds. Green tea is a rich source of catechins, which are thought to play a beneficial role in reducing the risk of various diseases, including Alzheimer's, certain cancers, cardiovascular and oral health. Antioxidant compounds in green tea could help promote exercise-induced abdominal fat loss, according to a new study from the American Society of Nutrition. Cla 2000 Reviews of green tea catechins in the prevention of the metabolic syndrome - a review.Phytochemistry. According to research, decaf green tea lowered energy consumption, so the weight loss that resulted wasn’t significant. It is a healthier cooking oil as compared to vegetable oil or refined oil, but it is a source of fat and is high in calories. Green tea does contain small amounts of caffeine, which can cause sensitivity in certain individuals. Drinking green tea after dinner or before bedtime can lead to restless sleep or insomnia for some people. Aim to have dinner ready to go at least 2 or 3 hours before your usual bedtime to ensure a good night's sleep. The processes that allow the body to convert food and drink into usable energy are collectively known as the metabolism. Green tea may be beneficial for weight loss by helping the body’s metabolism to be more efficient. Green tea extract is a concentrated supplemental form of green tea. Two reviews of many controlled trials on green tea supplements found that people lost about 3 pounds (1.3 kg) on average . Many important vitamins are fat soluble, so they actually require fat to be absorbed into the body. These vitamins include vitamin A, K, D and E – so adding avocado to any vegetable heavy meals will help you to get all the vitamins you can out of the meal. Another bonus of monounsaturated fats is that they may also raise levels of good cholesterol in your body. “Modest weight loss with no rebound” is your first step goal. Once you see that is happening, then bigger, better results will follow–because you will have acquired a new, healthier lifestyle by then. Meanwhile a proper storage method could maintain the nutrition in tea leaves maximally. Most studies have found that tea may have little to no effect on weight loss, even when drinking several cups a day. If you’d rather forgo a cup for a pill, you could try green tea extract, which comes in liquid, powder, capsule or tablet form. Different products offer different concentrations, some equating a 1-ml serving to as much as 10 cups of green tea. Because of its potency, be sure to limit your intake of any green tea extract. That’s why you need green tea for weight loss and for maintaining a healthy weight all your life. Another reason you should choose green tea for weight loss is because of its diuretic properties. Such properties promote urination and help you get rid of the excess water in your body that has been keeping you overweight. According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, an average cup of green tea contains only 2 calories, making it virtually calorie-free. Some of the studies, however, show that the green tea helps burn calories while at rest as well, which means that even when you are not sweating at the gym, green tea may help you lose weight. This number seems quite tiny at first glance – but they add up fast if you use more than one teaspoon and drink green tea several times a day. If you drink more than three cups of green tea a day, then preparing each cup with 2 tbsp of sugar could increase your caloric intake by as much as 100 calories. A research paper published in 2010 found that green tea, which contains catechins, has a noticeably positive impact on weight management and weight loss. It is worth noting that green tea on its own will have a limited effect.

Let our expertise save you money!
Our goal is to have happy, repeat clients.  Happy clients refer their friends and family and give us wonderful reviews. This how we grow our business, take care of our team, and contribute to our community.
We understand many people have budget constraints; we can be pretty creative and suggest ways to save you money. Ready to learn more about saving money on your next project? Read on!
Here is our “Top 10 List” of things to help.  We hope you find them useful, fun, and informative.
1) Please have a budget range in mind and let us know what that is.  We’re not going to spend every penny if we don’t need to. We love the challenge of coming in UNDER budget. “Cheap” isn’t a budget. (Cheap is your brother-in-law when it’s time to pick up the tab:-)
2) Please bring in a drawing, basic measurements and photos when you visit the showroom - we can work up a quote for you on the spot.  You don’t need to be an architect to do this. Paper and pen drawings are perfect. After you visit, you are more than welcome to take samples home to see them in your lighting or with the other elements of your decor.  We’d love to do an in-home for everyone, but bringing all our samples of cabinets and stone we’d need a semi - and that likely wouldn’t fit in your driveway. We will, of course, do final in-home measurements. Pro Tip:  There are a lot of entertaining videos on YouTube that will walk you through the “how to” of measuring for new countertops and backsplash. The one with the Golden Retriever is hilarious.
3) You don’t need to clone the zillion dollar kitchen or bath you saw on Pintrest or HGTV.  We can help you achieve a look you will love using those concepts/design elements without breaking the bank. Pro Tip: When you visit, please bring (only) the decision makers/home owners. You don’t need to bring a “designer” or “decorator” either. That’s part of the service we provide. Often, (and usually during a client’s second visit) they ignore “suggestions from the peanut gallery” and focus on what they wanted in the first place. This is your home - “you do you!”
4) Please avoid focusing on price per square foot. Theoretically we may be able to get your kitchen out of one slab, but you’re going to hate the number of seams and grain flow “fighting.”  You’re going to look at your kitchen or bath every day.  Do it right the first time.  Pro Tip: Please do NOT ask us to “piece together a bunch of remnants” to make a kitchen countertop. You’re not going to like the outcome and we don’t work that way.
5) Forget the fancy edge profile. Clean lines are beautiful, inexpensive, on-trend and durable. Eased, Pencil. Bevel. Say it with me. Eased. Pencil. Bevel. Bullnoses belong on...bull’s noses not on countertops.
6) If you’re physically able to, remove and your existing countertops. This saves you money instead of us doing the tear out.  Pro Tip: Make money off your old countertops by listing/selling them on various marketplaces or donating them and taking the tax deduction!
7) Think of your project like a birthday cake.  The cake itself, the frosting and the icing.  The “cake” is the foundation - what you really need, for example, a nice big pantry for storage.  The “frosting” are the items you want to make your space functional, things like trash pull outs and a lazy Susan. The “icing” are the nice to have, but you can live without, or you can add later items. A great example of this is under cabinet lighting.
8) When choosing cabinetry, choose in-stock/readily available colors. Custom colors are always possible; they do come at a price and with an extended time line for production and delivery. Pro Tip:  If you want to use one of the “hot and trendy” cabinet colors (Blue, Red, Black and Green are all the rage) - try it on an island.  Every “trendy” color will eventually become the “Avocado” or “Harvest Gold.” It’s cost effective a few years down the road to reface an island’s cabinets rather than an entire kitchen.
9) Avoid, what we affectionately call “The Rock Band” Syndrome :-) One room, one star. Either your countertop is the show stopper or your backsplash is.  Otherwise they will “fight” with each other for attention. If you choose a stone with a lot of movement or color, choose a muted/neutral backsplash and vice versa.  We often suggest a plain, neutral tile (inexpensive) paired with a bit of tile “jewelry” (expensive) to give it some pop and save you some cash. Pro Tip:  Choose the countertop first, then the tile.  If you’re not changing the tile, please bring a piece of on your visit to the showroom and/ or take a sample home to ensure you love the combination.
10)  After we’ve worked together to plan your project and we’ve given you a detailed and fair estimate/quote - please don’t over-negotiate. If you were upfront about budget in the beginning, rest assured we’ve worked our tails off to get you to that number. This is a shop/showroom - not a yard sale.  If you don’t “negotiate” at the Big Box Stores, please don’t “negotiate" with a small business.  Pro Tip: You can save money by paying with a check or cash. Credit card processing fees are expensive.
We hoped you enjoyed the read, had a laugh or two, and found at least one idea that will help you save money on your next project!

Blender Buying GuideTop Blenders Online – Blender Reviews
Health has become the watchword of contemporary society but glowing complexions don’t usually come through diets of buttered haute cuisine. Most ‘wholesome’ tastes can be rescued with the aid of a blender, a dash of carob and a tablespoon of nut butter. If Mary Poppins were alive today, she’d have suggested a spoon full of cocoa and a high speed blender to make the medicine go down. Similarly, gastronomers and mixologists can achieve little without the ability to perform magic with snow ice and chilled gazpacho. Whether your primary source of nourishment comes from super foods, strawberry daiquiris or pommes puree, you will need to become acquainted with the technicalities of the best blender features for your needs.

-1) Name your position
If pureed spinach is your idea of a taste adventure, you don’t need potent horsepower and muscular motors. Those focused on improving their cocktail intake demand high speed blenders with ice crushing action. Blenders that can puree, grind and crush food into velvety submission without generating too much heat are a behind-the-bar necessity: They make quick work of icy drinks without melting them into a diluted mess. Foodies require pulse settings which redistribute pesto ingredients beneath the blades for smoother results.
Most blenders come with bells and whistles that take focus away from features that are of genuine benefit: A vast array of speed settings is less important than wattage and torque. An all purpose product has an output horsepower of three or more. A wattage of 1500 will fulfill the cuisine fantasies of the most demanding chef, whilst your simple smoothie aficionado will be satisfied with a more affordable model with two speed settings.
-2) Creative cuisine or mashed potatoes?
Amateur cooks looking for a convenient way to stir, emulsify and froth often prefer wand blenders with low torque. Stick blenders take power from their users, so they needn’t have the wattage to circulate ingredients through the blades. Motor power of 500 watts is sufficient . Thrifty cooks can save pennies by choosing 100 watt stick blenders. Cordless options are lighter, and protective blades keep our fingers relatively safe from harm.
Those who know the difference between crudités and mignardise need blenders that give them intuitive power over speed to produce diverse, exotic blends. Supreme versatility comes from speeds that are not automatically programmed. Instead, they can be adjusted creatively to achieve varying textures and tastes. Pedantic chefs need blenders that can perform multiple functions without stopping to change between manual and automatic action. Seamless setting changes prevent melting that can ruin the texture of ice cream.
-3) Dinner for two or twenty?
Even nonchalant cooks become pernickety when they need to blend their soup in three phases, which makes container capacity a core concern for most. A four cup container will only tolerate half its capacity to make room for spatter. Family blenders need between 40 and 60 ounces with tight seals and an escape hatch for steam. Plastic jars are less durable and hygienic than glass. New high tech BPA free containers are fabricated to prevent wear and shattering. Consumers with common sense expect their containers to have easy-pore spouts but this is not a feature to take for granted. The best blender review sites will point you to blenders that pore without dripping. A large container does not automatically translate as having a large capacity. Commercial users need two liter blenders that can be filled to the brim.
The best blender review sites present the intricacies of accessories, safety features and long term performance that will transform you into a kitchen legend in no time.

Who is it for?
This great blender is ideal for either the cooking novice or expert looking for an easy solution to arduous chopping tasks. Onions, peppers, carrots, avocado, nuts, and ice can all be easily chopped with this machine. Instructions are relatively simple and the system ensures that the blades won’t start moving until the motor is fitted properly into the blender. Those concerned with efficiency, durability, and safety will like how well this gets the job done.
Pros and Cons
The Blender is more accurately termed a chopper. It can create drinks like margaritas, and chop up ice for smoothies, but is not what many would think of when considering a traditional blender. The Ninja is a lot more effective at chopping ingredients than a normal blender is, due to the different blade system. When the directions are followed to pulse, the food is chopped to the desired consistency. If you want the chunks smaller, you pulse a bit more. Very simple to use and even more so to clean. You may need to cut larger foods into segments that can fit into the unit, which is the same as a regular blender, and you may want to occasionally move the contents around to ensure that you get uniform pieces.
Why you should buy it?
The easy chopping action of this system makes things so effortless. There is no need to waste food that turns into a puree when you want it chopped instead. The dual blades, one towards the top and the other towards the bottom, ensure that the chopping is evenly distributed. Easy to store, durable, safe, and a huge time saver. For the most part any food that you would normally chop by hand can be chopped by this product. Cut into sections that will fit into the canister and the rest is done in a matter of seconds.
Ninja Master Prep Professional Blender – Final Verdict
Overall, if you are looking for something to help you chop in the kitchen or you want to try creating your health smoothies or margaritas this is definitely worth a try. The blade system is so much more efficient than other traditional blending systems. The Ninja Master Prep Professional Blending system allows you to prepare ingredients for meals in a fraction of the time it may have before. One meal that involves chopping celery, peppers, onions, and carrots may normally take quite a long time, but with this system you can just set up multiple containers then pulse the contents with the motor for a few seconds till you’re happy with the results and move onto the next container. Minimal work for results that look like you spent a long time with the prep work. With the easy cleanup, this is a great kitchen solution.

Ninja BL660 Professional Countertop Blender– Reliable, Durable, And Efficient
Tumblr media
Whether your want to make salsa, margaritas, or healthy smoothies, this blender can get the job done. The uses for this nifty kitchen gadget are only limited by your imagination. Cut onions without the mess and tears in a matter of seconds. Combine spinach, gouda and avocado with ease for the ultimate blend for your next grilled cheese sandwich. This blender is tough enough to shred ice for a snow cone for the kids, or chop nuts to combine with salads. The  Ninja BL660 Professional Countertop Blender offers the functionality of many higher-priced models of blenders at a fraction of the cost.
Ninja has been putting out kitchen equipment for quite a few years now and designs their products with ease of use, safety, and effectiveness in mind. Anyone who is tired of spending hours chopping will be grateful for this piece of equipment.
Main Features
• Large capacity pitcher which holds 72 ounces
• Powerful 1000 watt motor
• PULSE options
• Dishwasher safe components
• Easily removable blades
• Unique 6-blade technology
• Able to crush ice
• Three speed controls
• Special storage for the cord
Who is it best for?
This great blender is perfect for anyone who wants to save time with different types of kitchen preparation, or wants to avoid spending hours in the kitchen. Onions, nuts, ice, and nearly any food can be chopped by the Ninja quickly and efficiently. The pulse option gives you the control to decide the amount of chopping necessary for whichever dish you are preparing. The Ninja NJ600 Pro Blender is easy to use, so beginners in the kitchen as well as those who have been cooking for years will be able to use this effortlessly.
Pros And Cons
The blender is able to chop a number of ingredients with ease and due to the large capacity can handle enough for the whole family or to store for use later. It does not whip ingredients, but does cut through ice and chunks for a smoothie to be sipped through a straw. If you want a thicker smoothie, just add more ice until it is the consistency you desire. Blades are extremely sharp in order to cut through tough ingredients such as ice or nuts, so there are safety features in place to try and protect the user.
This blender is consistent and durable. It handles ice which many blenders are not truly equipped to handle and therefore cannot make snow cones, margaritas or adequate smoothies, while the Ninja can. It has thoughtful safety features, which ensure that accidents won’t happen. The large capacity is perfect for making smoothies the whole family will enjoy, or for putting in the fridge for later. Great for party drinks as well. Also easy to make large batches of salsa or to create your own special salsa recipe.
Final Verdict
Overall the NJ600 Pro Blender is priced reasonably, but offers the performance of a product in a higher price range. This is primarily for chopping and blending, so you won’t end up paying for functions that you are never going to use. The manufacturer warranty is one year and the product will pay for itself very quickly in the amount of time it saves in the kitchen. Onions are an annoyance to chop at best, but by just halving the onions, or cutting into quarters and throwing them into the Ninja you can use the PULSE option to have them chopped in no time without all the tears and stinging eyes. Cleanup is a cinch which makes this a great choice for anyone’s kitchen. The fact that it can be easily disassembled for storage and cleaning make this a solid investment that will see plenty of use in the kitchen and save valuable time.

It can be used in any number of ways, is small enough that it takes up very little space and it boasts a very powerful motor. The only con that I can see this device as having is the fact that the cups aren’t very huge. If you are looking to make a large batch of a particular recipe then you are going to have to do it in stages, which take up more time than you may be willing to spare for the task at that time. Other than that I have a blast when I am using it and you will too.
Why should I buy it
You should buy this device if you are looking for a blender/mixer system that is easy to understand and use, is small enough to be easily portable and has one of the most powerful motors in a device of its kind. Personally, I bought this device because I hate headaches and love to have easy ways of getting a particular job done. This device has simplified my life. I can make marinades for a variety of meat selections at the drop of a hat. I can make the components for both hot and cold soups with ease. I can even make healthy and fast foods for my baby. There aren’t many devices that allow you to do so many things but this device does and that alone deserves your attention.
Final Verdict
There is no reason why you shouldn’t get this amazing blender. From the price (which is objectively set) to its size even to how much it weighs-it all comes together to ensure that you get a device that can do everything you need it to do and more. You just have to get one!

Steven Universe Graphic Novel Crystal Clean (2020) - Outline & Review
The fifth original graphic novel for Steven Universe, Crystal Clean, is a new story about a mysterious Gem whose sludge-controlling powers make a mess of the beach. It’s new contentunlike some of the trade paperbacks that collect previously released individual issues of the comics. It is written by Talya Perper, with illustrations by S.M. Mara and a cover by Jamie Loughran.
Tumblr media
This story seems like a pretty typical “chase the monster of the day and save Beach City” plot at first, but it’s got some delightfully complex interaction--including some complicated guilt issues left over from the Gem War, some interaction between Buck and his father, and some nuanced examination of Peridot’s feelings toward Lapis’s absence. (The action appears to take place after “Letters to Lars” but before the events of “Can’t Go Back.”) The whole concept of being willing to face a mess bigger than you are is examined sensitively and effectively in this graphic novel. You can look below for an examination of the plot and some noteworthy observations for fans, including lots of pics.
[SU Book and Comic Reviews]
The story:
It's time to clean the Temple in a belated summer spring cleaning, and everyone's excited--or at least determined--except, predictably, Amethyst. But they buckle down and deep clean the whole living space, including the fridge and the hard-to-clean areas.
Tumblr media
Peridot is not being asked to help with the cleaning. She is still living in the bathroom, heartbroken over Lapis leaving and taking the barn with her. Steven is sympathetic. Amethyst, not so much. But when they finally finish and earn a beach day, they run out to the shore in their fun-in-the-sun outfits only to find that there's weird green sludge all over the sand.
Tumblr media
And what's worse: the residents of Beach City assume the Gems did something to cause the mess and they're furious. Yellowtail even thinks he saw Steven skulking around messing things up, while Kofi thinks since the Gems live on the beach and would have seen who did it if it wasn't them, it's their problem and they need to fix it. To Amethyst's intense dismay, they find themselves cleaning the beach and agreeing to catch whoever made the mess, because it certainly wasn't them! After the second intense cleaning of the day, they're not in the mood for a beach day, and they figure they'll come back in the morning to get their day off.
But when they venture out again, the beach is back to being covered in green slime. Who's doing this?? As they search the beach for clues, Steven sees something shocking. It's indisputable that this weird slimy green figure is involved somehow. But what's not so clear is why it looks like a doppelganger of Steven!
Tumblr media
The gross little figure is mean and fast. They give chase, upsetting some townspeople in the process, and oddly enough, when they try to fight the slime creature, it is able to re-mold its body and escape--much like the water clones Lapis Lazuli used against them during their first meeting.
Tumblr media
They continue to pursue and the Gems are incapacitated by the slime creature throwing slime in their eyes. Steven is spared because he is able to block it with his shield. He continues to chase it as it runs toward the car wash, warning his dad about it as it turns into a slime bird and attacks. Greg reflexively sprays it with a hose. The monster is stopped immediately, but in all the leftover slime, Steven can't find a Gem.
Tumblr media
With the townspeople still angry and the Gems still confused about what they're fighting, they decide to bring in some special knowledge: they consult Peridot. They want her expertise to fight the real culprit with water, but Peridot is easily reminded of Lapis when it comes to battling with water, and they're all unhappy having to ask her to help them when she's mourning.
Tumblr media
But Peridot is very much needed at this time, and the other Gems are able to convince her to work on a water-based weapon. She agrees and takes a machine Greg uses at the car wash, saying she could develop it into a water blaster if she had a common Gem-based water converter called a Cloud Crystal. Luckily, the Gems have access to a place that uses them: the Sky Spire.
Tumblr media
The Gems are able to extract a Cloud Crystal from under the water at the Sky Spire. Peridot demonstrates how it is able to pull water vapor out of the air to generate water. But they have to leave quickly because birds attack. (Not Gem birds. Just regular birds. Steven won't let the Gems hurt the birds, so they just retreat.) And then, only a few hours later, Peridot has created her new masterpiece: the Pressurized Hydro-Kinetic Crystalline Device, or P.H.K.C.D for short. Steven calls it the "Hydro-Pack" instead, and learns to use the features.
Tumblr media
While testing out the hovering feature, Steven sees the slime monster again, so the Gems pursue. They attack it without destroying it completely, and as it begins to retreat, the Gems follow. They find it jumping through pipes and off roofs, culminating in an attack on Ronaldo. Some of the sludge gets in his mouth and he claims it tastes like avocado. Hmmm. They decide maybe this Gem monster is sending out Gemless doppelgangers because it's stuck in one central spot with access to this avocado-based goop. Time for some detective work.
Tumblr media
The town council meets, which includes many of the business owners and local families. The Gems explain they're looking for sources on large amounts of avocado in the area, and Kiki brings up the Guacola incident from a while back--when Greg's old manager Marty came to town as a representative of the gross avocado soda Guacola and tried to use Sour Cream's DJ skills to promote the product. Discussion of Guacola suddenly makes Mr. Dewey very anxious. He begins spitting out weird explanations of how there are probably cans of the soda buried around and the Gems should search for them, and then he moves to end the meeting. Steven is suspicious, and then he receives a mysterious note.
Tumblr media
Ordered to come alone to a manhole behind the Big Donut, Steven ignores orders and brings Peridot--who in his estimation, won't hold him back from dangerous investigations like the other Gems will. When they get to the meeting place, Peridot finds out what a sewer is. (She finds it, and the entire concept of the human digestive system, disgusting.) The originator of the note turns out to be Buck Dewey, who has information to share with Steven.
Tumblr media
Turns out that after Dewey lost the election, the Dewey family was left struggling financially with only the income from the Big Donut, so he eventually went back to a previously rejected offer from Guacola to keep a storage silo on Beach City property. Now there's a Guacola silo on Dewey's personal property (and the Dewey family collects rent), but the silo is poorly constructed and is now leaking. Buck wasn't willing to blame his dad in front of everyone at the meeting, but he figured Steven would understand that and be able to take care of the situation. Before they can resolve much of anything, they're attacked again by avocado sludge and have to leave the meeting. Buck agrees to give them access to the silo the next day.
Steven has to have a little pep talk with Peridot before they move forward with the plan. She's very emotionally affected thinking this Gem might be like Lapis considering its powers, and she's afraid of how she'll react facing the Gem and worries she'll mess it up like she did with Lapis. But Steven needs her, so they go to the Dewey residence, where they meet Buck with an epic water gun. And lo and behold, in the center of the avocado pile is a teardrop-shaped Gem, and it's cracked.
Tumblr media
Buck, Steven, and Peridot fight the muck that begins attacking, but it creates doppelgangers of them too and they're unable to keep up. Luckily, the other Crystal Gems arrive with reinforcements; Garnet and Pearl have water guns and Amethyst has water balloons! They take a pretty good stand (while Mr. Dewey comes out and flips out over the monsters), but the silo cracks and releases the biggest monster of all, so the Gems have no choice but to bring out their best weapons too.
Tumblr media
Amethyst and Garnet fuse, and Sugilite is definitely a match for this slime monster. She's strong and not afraid to get messy. But as the battle continues, the creature emits a noise that has an emotional effect on Sugilite. She shouts out an apology, while Steven has no idea what this means and turns to Pearl for an explanation. Reluctantly, Pearl discloses that this Gem was once a Crystal Gem too and this noise is her distress signal. A signal she once emitted during a battle--and the other Gems could not rescue her.
Tumblr media
Pearl regrets that they tried to run to this Gem's rescue but were unable to help in time, and because of their inability to help, the Gem had been shattered and buried somewhere so she couldn't be found. They never found her, though the images of the story imply that Rose's tears reached the buried Gem and partially healed it, though it remained cracked. Pearl calls it a mess that can't be cleaned up, but Steven is determined, and uses his hydro-pack to go after the Gem itself at the center of the mess.
Tumblr media
In his protective bubble, Steven finds the Gem, apologizes for how long it took for them to find her, and heals the crack before immediately bubbling the Gem. The monsters dissolve, Sugilite unfuses, and Steven sends the Gem to the temple. Dewey and Buck agree they need to find a better way to make ends meet and need to get rid of the Guacola silo. And Steven confronts Pearl regarding this Gem's identity, at which point Garnet and Pearl admit to having suspected it was this mystery Gem because their history with her indicated the doppelganger attacks were in her skill set. They didn't admit it because they didn't feel comfortable including Steven in knowing that part of their history. Like Peridot, they weren't ready.
Tumblr media
In the aftermath, Steven declares that he's ready for the hard stuff because Earth is worth it, and they leave Dewey with his mess to clean up. Then they have their well-deserved beach day, even getting an apology from Kofi about not helping. And this time, Peridot does join them. Inspired by the way their group has taken on a mess, she decides to clean the bathroom and both metaphorically and literally tackle the messes she's been dealing with.
Tumblr media
Notable:
1. This graphic novel takes place sometime between "Letters to Lars" and "Can't Go Back" (yes, episodes 144 and 145) of the show. It's interesting how so many of the comic adaptations happen during this window--placeable in time because Dewey is working at the Donut shop and Nanefua is mayor, and Peridot is still living in the bathroom mooning over Lapis (whom no one has tracked down).
2. Garnet's "enlightenment guru" persona is invoked at the beginning of this book as she says the nonsensical line "realigning the chakras of the house will bring balance to the home." Chakras are generally energy centers in the body, not part of a building, though I've heard some people suggest rooms in the house can be represented by chakras. I don't know if that's a factual error or if it was intentionally gobbledegook to have Garnet saying goofy stuff.
3. Amethyst's INTENSE dislike of cleaning is so hilarious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Dewey is still insisting on naming certain donuts after himself.
5. Garnet is said to canonically never ask questions in the show. In this comic she asks several questions. She blurts "What?!" when she's punched a slime creature and doesn't understand why it's not destroyed. And she says "Where?" when Steven says he saw the monster. And she asks Steven and Peridot why they thought they could handle this by themselves, and asks why they thought they wouldn't believe them, and asks what they're talking about. And after Sugilite unfused, Garnet asks a bunch of questions about what happened, how they escaped, and where Steven was.
6. The idea of the Cloud Crystal is really interesting. And the callback to the Sky Spire was nice to see.
7. Pearl points out that Peridot's device's abbreviation, P.H.K.C.D, sounds inappropriate when spoken out loud. Welp!
8. Ronaldo's cameo involves him singing the Koala Princess theme song in Japanese.
9. Peridot's dismay over the disgustingness of sewers was probably my favorite part.
Tumblr media
10. At one point Peridot is consuming some kind of new Camp Pining Hearts material on her tablet while lying in the bathtub. When Steven interrupted her she partially blurted Lapis's name. :(
11. It's a really bold move to insert a piece of history into the Gem war in a side-story comic like this! I wish we had stories like this that were indisputably canon so we could learn more about the various Gem battles. It's still fun and weirdly touching to read about.
12. The Gem War flashbacks were drawn with the same character designs as those presented in "Your Mother and Mine." Looks really cool!
13. It's weird to me that Steven bubbled the Gem and didn't want to find out who she was. Maybe he figured she'd be dangerous and want revenge, but she shouldn't have been corrupted if she was underground and unformed during the time of the Diamond attack. (Lapis wasn't corrupted, just cracked.) It would've been nice to hear what she'd have to say, but at the same time, that would've been complicated and would have added a LOT to a story that's not really allowed to affect the main canon, which that probably would have on the same level Bismuth did.
14. I also think it's strange that Garnet and Pearl suggested they considered this Gem one of their team and felt such guilt over abandoning her, but they said they didn't know her name, indicating that they didn't believe she was a Lapis Lazuli even though she had similar powers and an identical Gem shape. I wonder if this was just an attempt to avoid being too presumptuous about the history or something since again these comic authors don't have access to the material for the show's writing team and aren't producing canon stories.
15. Can you really keep avocado-based soda in a silo like that? Gross. I'm not sure why a company would even want that honestly. A soda silo on private property?
16. Interesting that Sugilite recognized the distress call and felt guilt, but after unfusing, Amethyst still wasn't clear on what it was. It reminds me of how guilt felt by only one member of a Fusion manifested in "Mindful Education."

The £15 delivery that can save the planet, and your dinner?
‘Veg box’ schemes (but in fact these boxes can also contain fruit, eggs, dairy produce, meat and cupboard staples) are a way of getting (mainly) local, seasonal, and sometimes organic, farm produce delivered to your home.
Tumblr media
Courgette and vegan ricotta pasta, with homemade lettuce pesto, and roasted tomatoes on sourdough
Why choose a veg box?
Veg box schemes have developed to meet some of the environmental challenges that exist within the food chain, from farm, through our supermarkets, to our plates, and then too often into our bins.
The value of edible food wasted in the UK is around £19 billion (Waste and Resources Action Programme (“WRAP”) (2020) report). Reducing food waste is an effective solution to fighting climate change, as recognised by the inclusion in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals of Goal 12 – halving per capita global food waste. This proposed 50% reduction would lead to a reduction of the carbon footprint by 1.4 GtCO2 equivalent per year (UN FAO (2015) report). For context, that is over four times the annual CO2 footprint of the UK (source: Global Carbon Project).
All food products generate their own carbon footprint through emissions related to transportation from farm to plate. The worst offender is air-freighted food, which tends to be used for highly perishable foods including fruit and vegetables. Around 0.16% of food miles are estimated to be by air-freight (Poore & Nemecek (2018) report). For most food products transport contributes to up to 10% of that product’s carbon footprint (Poore & Nemecek (2018) report). Defra statistics (March 2020) show 53% of food consumed in the UK originates in the UK, and Farmdrop’s website estimates that just 23% of fresh fruit and veg sold throughout the UK is grown here.
Supermarkets overuse single use plastic and packaging, often on fruit and veg that comes already packaged nicely in its natural skin. Customers are incentivised to buy these items - the team behind the 2019 BBC series ‘War on Plastic’ found that there was a price difference of 42% between the same items packaged and without packaging in Tesco, with the loose goods costing significantly more. The team found that residents in one single street in Bristol collectively had 7,145 pieces of plastic in their kitchen. Helped by programmes such as the BBC’s Blue Planet II, we are recognising the many different types of tragedy caused by industrial pollution and the discarding of plastic waste, as well as recognising the resource intensive production and disposal of plastic.
In addition to quantifiable environmental impacts, it’s a truism that fresh, seasonal food is tastier. And veg boxes have faced an unexpected challenge and opportunity in being able to provide food to millions of households who are forced to seek produce in different ways to usual due to the coronavirus pandemic. A YouGov study undertaken between 7-9 April 2020 found that 3 million people have tried a veg box scheme or are buying direct-from-farm for the very first time, as a result of the pandemic.

The larger players
There are a number of websites offering differing versions of the veg box concept. I considered in brief some of the larger players: Oddbox, Eversfield Organic, Riverford, Boxxfresh, Farmdrop and Abel & Cole. The companies distinguish themselves in different ways. Oddbox claims to be the only company that rescues fruit and vegetables, and their business model is to deliver misshapen and surplus produce. This is to directly counter the problem that supply chain food waste makes up 30% of the total UK food waste (WRAP (2020) report)  The majority of other companies offered meat, dairy products, eggs, bread, and cupboard staples alongside a veg box, or had the option to purchase items separately (i.e. not as a veg box bundle). These companies buy from mainly local suppliers and farm partners, with Farmdrop working with more than 450 producers. Companies like Riverford plan box contents and order in advance from their suppliers, aiming to grow only the amount they expect to need. Eversfield Organic and Riverford offered almost exclusively organic certified products (for brevity, and because it was not a feature of all of the veg boxes, I haven’t written about the benefits of organic produce to biodiversity, nutrition, and emissions).
None of the companies offered exclusively British grown produce. Oddbox state that you could receive bananas, avocados and mangos in your box, however this is produce that has already been, or would be, rejected as ‘imperfect’ as part of an imported crop. Riverford state that 80% of their veg is UK grown across the year, and they never air-freight (Farmdrop and Abel & Cole also make this commitment). To maintain quantity and variety of produce, Abel and Cole do not claim to rely solely on British or local suppliers, but aim for transparency, and do offer an All British veg box.
All the schemes pledge to reduce, and continue working on reducing, packaging, and make any packaging recyclable or degradable. Riverford currently estimates that its veg boxes contain 82% less plastic than the equivalent packaged products from major UK supermarkets.

My review of Oddbox
My small fruit and veg box came with a brochure telling me the origins and reason for inclusion in the box of my produce this week. I received: a box of red grapes (from South Africa, imperfect colours), 4x apricots (Spain, surplus), 4x apples (UK, surplus), a box of cherry tomatoes (Spain, surplus), 2x courgettes (Spain, too small), 5x potatoes (UK, surplus), 9x white onions (UK, too small), a head of spring greens (UK, surplus), a head of green ‘living lettuce’ (UK, surplus), and a bag of salad leaves (UK, surplus). Overall I was slightly surprised that not all of the produce originated from the UK, however Oddbox explains that these products would have otherwise gone to waste and have not been imported for the purposes of the box. Some of the items deemed imperfect for sale were a little more ‘wonky’ than equivalent products that I could have picked up in supermarkets, but none of the items would be unsaleable, in my view.
Tumblr media
This week’s small fruit and veg Oddbox
The brochure explained that the inclusion of two leafy salad items was due to the British leafy salad season just beginning, and the sudden crash of food service items they were destined for. This made a lot of sense to me, although quite how I was going to eat all of that lettuce made less so.
The quality was without exception fantastic. Apart from the courgettes and tomatoes, I would have been unlikely to choose any of these items in the supermarket, however I decided to get creative and avowed to not waste a thing. I hoovered up the grapes as a snack, and then supplemented the box with a couple of vegetables that I already had in, herbs from my windowsill, and a well-stock store cupboard, and came up with the meals included in the photos in this article. I also made a huge potato curry with onion bhajis, which, despite my best efforts, I couldn’t make presentable.
In order to avoid generating any food waste, I froze most of my spring greens. You can freeze most vegetables, and I recommend lightly cooking them first. Pestos are also fantastic ways of using vegetables, and I made a pesto from the abundance of lettuce we received, which we then used on bread, pasta, and as a salad dressing. I didn’t this week, but another great way to use leftover or awkward vegetables would be to cook them into a frittata, or savoury crepe (chickpea/gram flour can be use to make both as an alternative to using eggs and milk).
The tomatoes, grapes, salad leaves and lettuce were packaged in plastic. In my opinion only the salad leaves needed any kind of additional packaging, so the packaging was a little wasteful. The produce is not organic, which is a shame, but overall I liked the fact that this produce might have gone to waste otherwise, and was impressed with the selection and the quality for the price paid.

Critical thinking
Although food wastage from farm to plate should of course be discouraged, household food waste makes up 70% of the UK’s total food waste (WRAP (2020) report). Oddbox estimate that households waste 25% of their weekly shop, on average, which amounts to over 10 million tonnes per year (Friends of the Earth, 2020). Veg boxes on the most hand are not like markets where you can choose what you’re getting, you just get a selection of local food that is in season. For fussy eaters, or consumers strapped of time or kitchen skills, it could be a challenge to fully use all the produce that comes in a veg box, particularly when the vegetable may be more unfamiliar or difficult to incorporate into a modern diet. Although some companies have tried to mitigate the wastage of their products (Oddbox allow three exclusions per delivery, and Abel & Cole and Boxxfresh are fully customisable), tailoring boxes is in some ways anathema to the purpose of the boxes, which is to provide consumers with fresh, local, seasonal and available food. I found myself eating very differently than I would usually, and creating dishes to use up the ingredients that I wouldn’t have usually made (lettuce pesto and courgette fritters, for example). This was an interesting challenge for me, but in the current times I have more time to plan my weekly menu upon seeing the boxes content, and spend more time in the kitchen than usual. Given that a huge amount of the problems associated with food waste are in the journey from fridge to bin, veg boxes aren’t a complete solution to food wastage, and instead we must collectively improve our food skills, including meal planning, storage, and creative use of leftovers.
The cost of the boxes may also be a deterrent. The medium sized Oddbox (7-8 varieties of veg and 4 types of fruit) costs £14.99, and Farmdrop’s equivalent costs £12.75. The organic box from Able & Cole contains 7 portions of veg and 2 portions of fruit costs £19.95, and the medium offering from Eversfields Organic and Riverford (8 varieties of organic vegetables) costs £15.25 and £15.35 respectively. Compared with supermarket shopping, the items will generally be more expensive per item, however if you did a direct comparison with fully organic produce in a greengrocers the price would be equivalent, or less. Anecdotally, however, users of these boxes think they have saved money, as the boxes mean that more meals will be plant-based and encourage cooking from scratch (both of which are cheaper ways of eating). Additionally, there is a premium to be paid for a vastly superior taste, as one colleague said: “potatoes and tomatoes which actually have flavour!” Of course everyone will make individual choices based on their budgets, and whether such choices ultimately represent value.

In terms of corporate responsibility, I saw some criticism of companies like Abel & Cole, who inevitably have overheads and shareholders to pay. Abel & Cole however are a certified B-Corp and as a part of this have made a large amount of their company information public. In general, the ethos I saw from these companies is what you expect of companies operating in the market for environmentally conscious consumers: they recognised that every element of their business always had room for improvement (be that choosing and paying local producers, packaging, deliveries, farming standards), and that a truly sustainable business had to be positive in each of these areas. All the companies seems to be trying to improve on  the 9p received by producers for every £1 spent in a supermarket (People Need Nature (2019) report), and veg boxes are a way for smallholder farmers to supply more directly to the public.
I wondered about delivery emissions of veg boxes from supplier to doorstep. It appears unequivocal that delivery services are no worse for the planet than independent shopping trips, assuming that the majority of households do their shopping in a car. Exeter University found that because home delivery consolidates many people’s shopping journeys into one, it is generally more efficient than going shopping in your own car (Coley, 2009). Abel & Cole adapt their daily delivery routes to minimise fuel consumption, and Oddbox deliver overnight to take advantage of quieter roads. In addition, the commitments to avoid air-freight address the largest source of delivery emissions. However, the position is more nuanced in terms of growing tasty, out-of-season produce that customers demand at home in the UK. A 2009 paper compared the environmental impacts of importing Spanish field-grown lettuce into the UK during winter with lettuce produced in the UK in heated greenhouses, and found that importation from Spain produced fewer GHG emissions (Hospido et al, 2009). A similar picture holds true for crops like tomatoes grown in warmer European climes, compared with greenhouse grown in the UK. Anyone who eats seasonally will understand the challenge of maintaining a variety of produce acceptable to the usual consumer in the UK at certain times of year, and given that a large draw of these veg boxes are the quality of the produce, some element of food importation seems inevitable.
It’s less about where our food comes from (although there are of course a number of reasons apart from purely environmental ones that may influence why you choose UK suppliers), than what we are eating. Data from the US shows that substituting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from beef and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs or a plant-based diet reduces GHG emissions more than buying all of your food from local sources (Weber & Mattews, 2008). There are massive differences in the GHG emissions of producing a kilogram of different foods, with plants consistently being the lowest (lamb and cheese – 20kg CO2 eq, beef - 60kg CO2 eq, peas – 1kg CO2 eq, source: Our World in Data). Producing livestock for human consumption contributes 14.5% of annual GHG emissions (Friends of the Earth, 2020), and is resource heavy - more food is obtained from a given area of land if we consume plants directly rather than pass them through an animal first. 40% of arable crops are fed to animals (source: Food Climate Research Network, 2020). The IPCC estimate that by 2050 a global switch to a plant-based diet would reduce global CO2 emissions by up to 8 billion tonnes per year, relative to business as usual (IPCC, 2019). The meat and dairy options in the boxes offered by most of the companies considered may at least have the effect of encouraging consumers to think more about where their animal products are coming from, and to re-think the narrative that these are essential products, especially eaten in the quantities eaten in the UK today.

Ultimately we have power as consumers, and every pound spent is a conscious choice. I encourage you to examine your own shopping habits, and whether you could shop more seasonally, locally, organically, and plastic-free. Although it is certainly not the only option, it may be that the easiest way to do this is to take up a subscription to a veg box, and find one that works for you, your tastes, and your time available. Reconnecting with the food on our plate and its journey to get there makes us all more conscious consumers, and can bring great enjoyment, both in times of pandemic and beyond.
