So I just finished watching Japan Sinks 2020 and major spoiler warning ahead!!
So, in episode 4 or 5 the crew end up in that happy village (which high key, glad to know I'm not the only one who immediately thought it was a cannibalistic cult. What a reversal.) And in that village, Ayumu takes on a job to take care of a man who's fully paralysed. He can twitch his fingers pretty good and he can blink, but yeah that's about it, can't talk or make sounds or anything. Well, he's Onodera-san and even before that revral I saw him and was like "he's my favourite character. Iono how long he's been in this condition, but hell yeah dude, you survivin!" I mean, I figured he was definitely going to die when this mini Arc finished finished because it was clear that he was gonna be the sage character who gives the main character some much needed information and then once he did, there'd be no more use for him story wise.
BUT BOI was I wrong and FUCK YEAH I'M SO HAPPY I WAS. Tell me how this dude SURVIVED the ENTIRE PLOT -after being introduced- and his ONE LINE of "dialogue" (is, the only time the show gave us subtitles for what he was communicating rather than have the other crew figure it out through the note app and whatnot) was "I want to punch everyone in the face who said I was wrong" like DUDE. I'LL HELP YA.
Like, man, does anyone realise that by just existing, he single handedly stared a proverbial Charles Darwin in the eye and said "yeah, who's the fittest here?? Me bitch." And !!!!! An absolute legend. I am SO HAPPY that he lived, cause I'm honestly over this mentality of "leave the weak to perish" meanwhile it was the MOST "FIT" PEOPLE WHO DIED FIRST except my girl nanami from the beginning, that was so cruel to have her beat up a would be r*pist and then kill her off in the next episode but you know what?? Water under the bridge, because they 👏🏽kept👏🏽that👏🏽energy👏🏽 later on when ayumu bodied that pervert as well!
But for real, I'm so happy that Onodera-san made it to the end! You KNOW he was having some attitude in his head, judging the crew for all their dumbass decisions. like really, they decided they was just gonna ignore the big old barge of uber nationalistic Japanese people chanting "purify japan! We are the pure! We are real Japanese!" And STILL decided to drag their non pure asses to the boat guide?? I swear, Onodera-san was like "um... I know these fools ain't about to drag my dark ass, his foreign ass, and THEY dark asses onto that boat, mufuh's crazy and stupid.". Gods, I love this show.
Could've done without that random sex scene. It was consensual which, kudos to making the only graphic sex scene consensual and playing the noncons as disgusting before bodying them, but yeah it threw me off guard and came out of nowhere. And I guess it added something in hindsight? That the lady and her body guard were actually married with a kid who probably has some sort of intellectual disability and OK, another tangent, HELL YEAH MOMMA AND POPS making an entire ass community where everyone is accepting of others without expecting anything from anyone, JUST so you could raise your son in a community that won't shun him for his disability. Excellent spotlight on Japan's poor treatment of those with mental disorders.
Gosh this SHOW.

Final thoughts on Japan Sinks 2020 (THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS)
• very depressing which yes I should have expected but still
• I’m sad that Koga died
• Go becoming a pro gamer made me very happy
• I did not think Ayumu was in middle school I thought she was like high school age at least
• Kite was a really good additional character but I wish Ayumu and his bumpy start led to more character development
• they didn’t really mourn anyone’s deaths which made me a bit uncomfortable
Overall I definitely recommend this show but I will warn there’s a lot of death and destruction and it is not for the faint of heart. It was pretty well done and I think it gets about a 7/10

to talk about JS2020 again: I wish we were able to learn more about the characters, because there was a lot of potential there to flesh things out a bit more that wasn't tapped into. i get that it's essentially the apocalypse for everyone there, so it's not time to sit around the campfire and talk about your childhood trauma, but still.
there was nanami, who we know nothing about except her name and the general area she lived in; we could've learned about her and who she was to the family and ayumu. like what was the reoccuring jealousy (?) that we saw from ayumu regarding nanami and koga interacting?
speaking of koga - there was a whole ass. thing with him there regarding sprinting, that's left unresolved and unexplained. we can work out that he used to be a incredible sprinter before stopping for a unknown reason, and that's it. considering that his death literally hinges on him sprinting again, you'd expect it to be something we see with him narratively, but it's rarely mentioned.
with his death - afterwards, we hear kite talking about how they haven't raced yet: where was that dynamic?? that line hit, but it would've hit harder if we had it set up earlier. we don't focus a lot on characters interacting beyond the family, which is a major shame when we see relationships like nanami/kite and their interactions with koga. the closest thing we get is kunio interacting with go, but even then that lasts for only a few episodes - we see them become close, but not the process it takes to get there.
i dont wanna make this too big of a post, so i'll stop now, but essentially: japan sinks set up a bunch of characters and dynamics, showed us that there was something there, that things had been fleshed out and then... never did anything with it. i love japan sinks, but it's kinda dissapointing, and i wanna see more where we can learn about what they didn't originally show us

Weebviews: Japan Sinks 2020; Nihon Chinbotsu 2020

Aired: Jul 9, 2020
Episode count: 10
Manga: -Novel-
Written by: Sakyo Komatsu (Novel)
Genre:  Sci-Fi, Drama
Directed by:  Pyeon-Gang Ho, Masaaki Yuasa
Studio:  Science Saru
License: Netflix
-----------
OK, this anime is AMAZING. Science Saru’s shit makes me absolutely die because the two anime series that I’ve watched from them were absolutely amazing (DMCB being the other one)
For 10 episodes, this anime really pulls you in, and it really helps you focus on the main characters. What’s also really scary is some of the things that happen in this, can actually happen in real life and it lowkey gave me actual anxiety from it.
The multitude of different characters from different places (idk if they tell you this later, but the main family is a mixed family!), and how the story keeps moving with every episode made it easy to binge watch. One thing that I notice, is most people don’t like this because of the main character, and if that’s the reason you decide to dislike the anime, then that’s your decision lol, just please remember this is in the eyes of a child.
Although, I do have to say that the DMCB anime hurt me more in the terms of the sadness factors, but this anime made me tear up on multiple occasions
-----------
MAL:  6.46/10
PER: 9/10

“I am here thanks to the foundation laid by the blessings of the wise people that I encountered.”
Japan Sinks: 2020 (2020)
I finished the whole thing and I’m in awe, LITERAL AWE. A lot of the events that happened were both incredibly unexpected and fast and I was on the edge of my seat the WHOLE TIME. Even in the art AND in the resolve and spirit of the characters, we find beauty among a lot of the destruction that occurred. This is definitely a HUGE recommendation and someone please talk to me about it! (None of my friends wanna watch,,,aka they wanna miss out on this masterpiece :0)

“shh, shh. you were having a nightmare.” @ Koichiro Mutoh to Ayumu Mutoh  @naosh-of-muses
Tumblr media
THERE WILL COME A DAY WHEN THE EARTH WILL CEASE TO EXIST.     Through human’s own actions or their inactions to stop it , some day humans will no longer be around. Ayumu felt like this was really the end of the world , that their inactions as humans were the cause of it. But what could she have done ?? Barely a girl herself , all her focus has ever been on was her grades and her future.
...   Her future , that was no longer a likelihood. No , it died with her team mates. Bodies littered on the floor like trash , the scent of blood and death had already been in the air when Ayumu woke up after the quakes shook her school. She can still feel the throb of her leg after hitting it against a fallen locker , she can still hear the raspy cry of     “ Help   ...   me   ....  ”     from the team mate she   -   she just left there !! Left there to die !!
One minute , her awareness is still set in that school , destroyed halls that seem like they never end   -   glass shards and bodies were everywhere , the stench all too real , the only breath of relief is the sound of her father’s voice.
Then light fills her blurry vision as her body jolts up. Rubs her eyes , breathing is harsh. It takes her a moment to realize where she is   -   still with the other survivors of the initial quakes , her father’s face grounds her to reality once more.
It had just been a dream.
And thank the heavens for that.
After moments pass as she brings herself mentally back to reality , her body jumps up. Shaking arms wrap tightly around her father , face buried in his shoulder and harsh breaths are taken sharply. She’s trying to calm down her breathing , but it seems she’s not having luck with it.
Tumblr media
“ It   -   it felt so real. Like   -   like   -   like I was back there again   -   at the high school and I   -   I couldn’t do any   -   anything   -   for them again. ”     she confides , nearly choking on her own tongue as the words fall without hesitance. Her father , mother , and brother were her shreds of sanity now , not knowing how she could make it if they weren’t around her. She could safely confide in her father what the dream was about , even if she’d always try to tough things out. It was too much for her to ignore now.
She would always feel survivor’s guilt for being the one to live , find some new way to blame herself for not being able to help them. Her last thought was that it had been her phone   -   that she was selfish enough to take her phone with her , and because of that she somehow wasn’t able to save them. It seemed like a rational thought to her.
