Hi! I'm years late to Thorin/Bilbo, I don't know how and why (LOTR books/movies are my all time favorites and I have been a fan for decades) I missed it all but yesterday I suddenly realized I love that ship, of course I am struggling to find any active blogs, communities, challenges etc. since I am five years late. Would you have anything to recommend? Are there even active blogs at all? I am asking you because Tumblr recommended me your blog when I was searching for it. Thank you in advance!

well i can say the fandom is still fairly active, especially within the bagginshield fandom. 

to begin with i would say at least follow the bagginshield (and thilbo too) tag, because it does tend to update daily (sometimes its just the auto ao3 blog but still). and also check out ao3′s bagginshield tag. its not 100% the best all the time but if youre willing to look for fics that sound good, you will find them! 

in fact i’ll link to @lesbiankiliel‘s fic rec for that link (also she does a ton of reccing so check out her fic rec tag too) 

re: blogs 

honestly i follow a lot of people so i cant rec everyone that i know (because i forgot sometimes) but i can give you a couple of people in the fandom (and if anyone who sees this wants to add on that theyre an active blog in this fandom pls do)

Protectiveness

Bagginshieldweek Day 01: King and his Consort - Thorin protecting Bilbo or Bilbo protecting Thorin?

tl;dr: Thorin is 1% protective and 99% “I trust you”. Bilbo is “fight me first”

Looking at the movies, it turns out that Bilbo is the more protective character. Bilbo is the one who goes all “fight me” on Azog & company at the end of movie one. He’s the one “protecting” his dwarves by distracting the trolls (by giving instructions on cooking dwarf. Well. Tough love.) and spiders (he’s also protective of his shiny new jewelry item, for, uh, other reasons as well, I suppose). He’s also trying to protect Laketown from Smaug, everybody from dying in war, and goes all “I’m not asking you to allow it” on Gandalf in order to warn Thorin & co.

Bilbo’s got a protective streak a mile wide.

Meanwhile, Thorin (after movie 1) sends Bilbo to scout, sends him first across the river, trusts him to break the company out of Thranduil’s dungeon, sends him to steal the Arkenstone from Smaug. In short, Thorin’s actions show next to no protective inclination, but a good deal of trust (blindly trusting Bilbo’s mad escape plan featuring empty wine barrels) and respect/affection (the regrettably cut scene featuring Thorin calling out for Bilbo atfter the barrel ride). The same happens when they try to kill Smaug - Thorin doesn’t protect Bilbo (much as I wondered if he wasn’t about to catch Bilbo with his wheelbarrow), but trusts him to “keep going” and not to need saving. A point could be made that Thorin trusts Bilbo to hold his ground the same way he expects it of Dwalin.

Which, considering Thorin’s backstory and Bilbo’s lack of qualifications as a warrior, is pretty amazing.

And then comes the mithril shirt. Possibility one: it shows that Thorin has a protective streak - why it only appears when he’s under the thrall of gold, who knows. Hypothesis No.2: It’s got zero to do with protectiveness and is all about affection (or rather: affections filtered through cursed gold. Where Thorin used to trust, he suddenly grows wary and seeks to reaffirm his trust in Bilbo through gifts. Potentially, the general possessiveness of the gold sickness extends to Bilbo and the mithril is staking a claim.)

Aka: Not even under the cursed gold is Thorin particularly protective. Now, Bilbo under the influence of the ring...
