“But if Bajoran religion doesn’t see homosexuality as wrong, how come Kira doesn’t know she’s gay?” Because trauma can inhibit self discovery? Because when you spend the formative years of your life giving your life to something bigger than yourself (the Bajoran resistance) there isn’t a lot of time to stop and think about what you, personally want. Because telling the difference between admiration and attraction can actually be very difficult, even if you are in touch with your sexuality (I still mistake the two all the time).

I love Bajoran religion as an aspect of DS9, I really do, but I weep for its lost potential and the fact that its canon portrayal has big Religion Written By Atheists energy. It’s only ever really explored from an outsider perspective, even when it’s explored from an insider perspective-- it’s all vaguely ritualistic aesthetics and sweeping-yet-shallow statements about faith and occasional restrictive attitudes that seem to not do much besides give people like Kai Winn an excuse to be oppressive and fundamentalist. We see very little of its actual teachings, rites, or symbolism. We’re left to assume that there’s something beneath the surface of what we get, and what we get is very vast but ultimately very small. Fuck’s sake it doesn’t even get a name.
If and when I do that DS9 rewrite I’m planning to eventually do, one of my main objectives (as I am a religion worldbuilder first and a person second, and I need a break from writing culty Dominion shit all the time because DAMN that shit can get real scary and bleak real fast) is to flesh out the Bajoran faith a bit more, and do more to justify its centrality to the lives of those on the station who acknowledge it.

one thing bugging me about bajoran religion and world building is its implied worshipping the Pagh Wraiths isn't like, a new thing in Bajoran culture (obviously they were originally part of the Prophets, but they seen to have retained worship after that) and they're a despised religion, but the way that operates irl is more complex than how DS9 allows it by very literally making the Pagh Wraiths villains? I always hate when fantasy and sci-fi media does this "evil god with evil worshippers" thing because of this

you know what i wanna know? did sisko live a normal human lifespan and then just die or did he like fully ascend to godhood with the prophets at the end of his life?
because if its the latter than it's technically possible that sisko and michael burnham could meet.

Do you think Baseball became like, a cultural touchstone on Bajor because Sisko liked it?
Sisko: "These people have placed a great deal of religious faith in me. I would never abuse that to advance personal interests."
Also Sisko: "Hear Me Bajorans! The Prophets have revealed unto me a new sport! Allow me, your Emissary, to explain the rules of Baseball..."

Don't understand why that "what does your favorite star trek race say about you" post says something about religious trauma for Bajorans. I'm pretty sure that the least traumatic part of being Bajoran is the religion actually

You know, I dislike the "the Hebitians were actually early Bajorans" thing purely because it's weirdly bioessentialist to go "these two religious cultures must be the same species", but it's also inconsistent with other betacanon. I know that that's the nature of Star Trek but the main writer who's done the heavy lifting on Hebitians literally stated that they were the first peoples of Cardassia Prime, who envied by other planets and invaded, which if anything would imply first contact between the Hebitians and Ancient Bajorans was... violent, if you want to decide Ancient Bajorans had significant contact with Cardassia Prime, and in fact led to the modern culture of Cardassia oppressing Hebitian culture.
