kai winn’s relationship to religion really is just so interesting to me in a way I come back to sometimes like. she’s the leader of a faith and her gods will not speak to her. they will speak to other people in front of her and they will make a human from a society that did not interfere with her planet’s suffering their emissary but they will not speak to her. and I’m sure she can do a lot to justify it in her mind because she would have to be able to in order to keep any faith, and she has to keep her faith because she says herself that’s all she had in the camps, but that’s still a terrible thing to experience. and I’m sure a lot of people would argue that it’s not real faith, it’s ambition, but I think it’s some of both, and most importantly I think on the most immediate levels she believes it’s faith.

and like I think she and a lot of other bajorans have a reason to have a really complicated relationship with the prophets because the more demonstrably real and powerful they are, the more they’re willing to interfere in things like the dominion war, the harder it would be for a lot of people to justify to themselves why the prophets didn’t do anything to stop the genocide of their chosen people. I think the pah wraiths plotline ultimately fell kind of flat when it kind of boiled down to “dukat’s weird cult” and it was also a victim of the season’s pacing issues, but it has some interesting implications regarding this divide in the bajoran people, particularly when their religious leader’s faith is being so seriously called into question.

I've been doing a lot of thinking...and I feel like I need to scream this out somehow even though I'm sure it's been talked about before (and I'm putting it under a readmore because it gets long).

No matter what, in any playthrough you do and any timeline you create.

UNDERTALE is a game about guilt.

You have Toriel, so guiltridden she couldn't protect her own children that she devotes herself to never letting another child leave again. And then they do!! over and over again, that guilt compounds until it's the center of her life and every choice she makes!!

And obviously Asgore, so guiltridden that he couldn't protect his own children from humans that he spends the rest of his days trying to get out and get revenge on them--as if that will stop the voices in his head saying, if you had been out there with them you could have stopped it, you could have stopped those humans from killing your children, and maybe he could have!! Or maybe not!! He'll never know and it eats him from the inside out!

Alphys, oh my sweet summer child this fandom does not deserve you!! Alphys, so guiltridden from her own perceived failures as a scientist that she began to try anything, anything to make the King happy, and it seemed to be working at first, and then it was so everlastingly worse, how can you cause something worse than death?? without even trying??

And it shows up in little ways, silly ways, too! Ways you wouldn't even think about as guilt! Undyne! She feels guilty that she won't let Papyrus join the Royal Guard so she gives him cooking lessons instead! Papyrus feels guilty that he's not in love with you after one date so he'll "keep being your cool friend and act like this never happened!"

SANS MY BOI don't even get me started. His guilt isn't as physically obvious but he made a promise to toriel, he promised her he would keep the human safe, and in timelines where you save everyone he follows you pretty much all throughout the Underground (even if he doesn't do anything to help smh) because he'd feel guilty not doing it, and in timelines where you kill everyone he feels guilty for not stopping you, AND in those SAME timelines he feels guilty for stopping you because it means he's breaking his promise to Toriel to keep you safe I!!! This boy can fit so much cosmic guilt in him!!!!

Asriel! FLOWEY!! Do you ever wonder if he feels guilty about being the one to wake up again? The one to survive, when Chara had to die twice?? He sits at their grave and he will do anything, anything to drown out those thoughts so he befriends and kills and torments and it's all the same and it's all useless!!

And their guilt compounds each others'! Toriel makes Sans make that promise because of her own guilt, which increases his! Asgore's guilt is what pushes Alphys so far past the limits of ethical science, because he increases hers!

And all of this, all of this, ALL OF THIS pales in comparison to you!!!

You!! The player! You return to the Underground after maybe accidentally killing Toriel or a few others because you didn't know, you never wanted to hurt them!! You listen to Flowey and you come back and you save them all!

You! The player!!! You cry at the ending and you'd feel guilty, so guilty about letting them all go, wouldn't you? So you ignore Flowey's pleas to let it alone, and you come back again, you say hello to your dear friends but this time it isn't the same, this time you kill them all because you want to see everything this game has to offer, might as well get your money's worth, the fights are cool, right?? And then you get hit with the most unsatisfying atomic bomb of an ending and the only thing left is your own reflection staring back at you from the black screen of your computer as the horror dawns, what have you done???

YOU!!! The player! You go back again even though there is no Flowey left to tell you to, and you save them all again because I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, nobody deserves what I did to all of you, and it's all good, nobody remembers, and then you get to the end. The game knows what you did!!! It never forgot, and it'll make certain you never forget either!! Guilt!! Guilt, guilt!!! It's baked into the code of this game!!

Anyways tl;dr, maybe it actually did make sense to give this game to the pope

Dreamtale´s twins empathy

Some people translate the empathic abilities of twins to senses such as smell or sight, which I think is great, because it encourages this idea that they perceive the world in a completely different way than other living beings.

"The sound of a broken heart, the color of sadness"

In particular, I really like to highlight the almost divine nature that Dream and Nightmare have and how this directly impacts their relationships and interactions with the rest, because it inevitably does. Nightmare, at least following his canon, cannot express any genuine or "healthy" positive emotions because it goes against the whole sense of existence, although this is a bit more complex because just as Dream can experience sadness, Nightmare can experience happiness, But unlike this and according to the creator of Dreamtale herself, Corrupted Nightmare is "a thing" that moves by instinct and Dream is his own person with convictions and aspirations.

Dream is the incarnation of something ethereal and beautiful, whose aura is not as aggressive as that of Nigthmare but the way he looks imposes a lot on others. Although I like to joke that he is cute, I think that idea is totally present in the construction of his character. He has to be pretty, pleasant to look at, the light that dazzles you.

I also think Nightmare has that mysticism, but his purpose is not to dazzle, so you could call him ugly even. He imposes himself in a different way, like an uncomfortable sensation that stalks you, like that silhouette that peeks out from the edge of your gaze.

every time I see someone pitch a picard spinoff about [insert character here] I just get so tired like. I know I’m years late to pick this battle but I genuinely just don’t think single character focused shows are the right choice for star trek given that at its core it’s about a group of people working together for a better future. obviously the main character would still have a crew, and obviously the captains have always been closer to main characters than the rest of the crew to a degree, but naming the show after one person means that everything that happens on that show ultimately happens in service of the titular character, and that very individualistic mindset feels wrong for trek imo.

#also like. yeah I guess technically the 90s shows all spun off each other but a) they each had a distinctly separate premise #and b) they each set up basically entirely new casts of characters that were specifically crafted for that show and that situation #vs if you spin off an established character you ultimately limit how new it can get I think #worf is an outlier to a degree but he had to adapt to the show it wasn’t built around him #idk the point in the tags is I guess a lesser complaint I just find it limiting #san rant

im talking. hood up, glasses on, no blue lines, talking to ghost toriel through the door type shit. like hes so cute + once he realizes everyone are ghosts he murders them and then the whole fiasco starts. error puts himself to this fake job thag nobody asked him to do and he’s going on living his little life. At first he’s learning. Error doesn’t remember anything, he doesnt know anything, he just knows he has this fake goal that he clings to with his life and that his own very existence hurts (his glitches can be painful + he’s the most suicidal motherfucker ever).

he’s like. a little baby learning about the world all over again and he. doesnt know whats happening but his reactions to everything reflect his emotionally constipated nature and its just so. idk. i love thinking about error wheb he’s new. he would be like that for awhile before he gets the jist of everything and starsts doing everything like kidnapping blue, making blueberror, meeting nightmare and dream, meeting ink, etc. and uf hes in underverse he would have been quite familiar with everything already hence the outfit change (or just His lucidia design). he’s just so baby. he’d learn that he doesnt like touch (something i’d like to write one day), he’d learn that crashing hurts. what was it like when he first crashed? when the glitches first blocked his vision? did he think it was permanent? just hkw terrified was he?

error is SUCH an unstable character. he’s meant to disarm creators (he’s so cute! but he LITERALLY tore bluefrom his family and kidnapped him), and he’s got such a genuinely good connection to aftertale i just. love him so much. i think not enough people acknowledge his unstable and erratic nature and come up with fanon error as a result (grumpy mr. Leavemealone). like no he’d love to talk to someone. he says HIMSELF that it’d be nice to have someone alive to talk to because he mostly talks to his puppets and. well. himself.

I've been rewatching Osomatsu-san and have been keeping track of the times the brothers have said each other's names/nicknames because I have always wondered about it so yeah this is very self-indulgent TT_TT but I will be sharing it below.

Note!

1. Included are Seasons 1-3 and The Movie (2019), however I did not include AUs apart from F6 and Girlymatsu, and skipped over recap episodes as well as ending songs and previews

2. I did not include times when their names was said but it wasn't pertaining to them specifically so things like "Osomatsu-kun/-san" as titles or "Karamatsu Girls"

3. I did not count the times where a brother would refer to them as a whole like when Karamatsu would say "brothers" or when Totty says "niisan-tachi" (brothers)

4.
