What's missing is: Grandma's song "We Go Dancing", the scene between Dad and Tony, the beginning of "Deep Into The Ground", and the scene between Mrs. Wilkinson and Dad discussing Billy's ballet. It appears the filmer was trying to conserve battery power and was trying to focus on Billy's scenes. DVD has been enhanced with main menu and thumbnail images for access to the various songs. A-

A very solid and funny cast. Nikki does a fantastic job acting and vocally. On wide shots there can be heads on the sides, but nothing that really obstructs the action. During Broadway previews, less than a month before the official premiere. So there are differences from the Cast Recording. Very nice video of the show however a bar can be visible in wide shots but it doesn't interfere with anything.

NOTES: A fantastic capture of the second tour cast. This is the first known dvd of the 2NT, and the cast doesn’t disappoint. David and Cody are strong leads with great voices and comedic timing. Pierce is perfect as McKinley. Tallia also does a great job; she has a strong belt and does an endearing rendition of Sal Tlay Ka Siti. This is a very nice capture with no obstruction or blackouts, and only a bit of washout in superwide shots of high-contrast scenes. The video is very steady and the sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call.

transcript of “agony,” bandstand style

geoff packard and joe carroll performed a parody of agony at the birdland jazz club during the donny nova band reunion concert. it’s hilarious, so here’s the transcript under the cut!

Geoff: Um so Joey’s a great trumpet player [audience clapping] and composer too I guess.. So the beautiful thing about bandstand is that you get to meet all these different people with different talent levels for different things.

Um, Joey’s amazing trumpet playing made me feel great, but also made me feel not to great because I struggle with the trombone.

Joe: There’s some of us who are actor-musicians, and there’s some of us who are musicians, but actors also. Geoff and I both fall into that, y’know, actor-musician thing. [fades out]

Geoff: So I auditioned for the show and I played the trombone, and whatever… So it got me thinking:

[sung to the tune of Agony, with a jazz influenced accompaniment]

Did I confuse them or showcase the plot? Why did they hire me?

As I peruse this new chart I’m to play, I am sure they will fire me.

Agony! I can’t play what they wrote. I was shitty in high school, and since then hadn’t played one whole note.

Joe: Scores I have scoured for 45 hours, and finally good. I played it all perfect. The hard work was worth it. I misunderstood, click click click click click click click click click click click click

Agony! so much worse than I feared. When you know you could do this shit, if that metronome weren’t in your ears.

Both: Agony! Oh they torture they teach.

Joe: I can’t hear what I’m playing

Geoff: Their horns are both slaying

Both: Ah son of a bitch

Geoff: Why can’t I just stand there and sing something, act while I’m doing it. Musical theater is what I was trained for, and not the trombone.

Joe: You sound great if they just cut the high note.

Geoff: Is that so?

Joe: Would I know?

Geoff: Aw shit, am I bad?

Joe: You know nothing of badness. It’s the end of the show, and then Corey looks at you and says, “Okay Johnny, you pick it up.” Then there’s that ticking and click click click don’t slow down don’t speed up click click click-

Both: Agony!

Geoff: Though it’s different for each.

Joe: Always one beat behind

Geoff: Always one step below

Both: And that Perri disease. (in reference to their conductor Matt Perri) Agony! so much worse than we thought.

Joe [spoken]: But y’know I did play some drum before the show.

Geoff [spoken]: Yeah, and our characters were small. It’s not like we’re playing a new instrument and singing ten songs and like leading the show

Both [sung]: At least we’re not Corey Cott.
