Recommendations 1-5:
1. HARLAN COUNTY, USA (1976), dir. Barbara Kopple
“WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?
This film documents the coal miners’ strike against the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky in June, 1973. Eastovers refusal to sign a contract (when the miners joined with the United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike, which lasted more than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive women-folk. Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving us some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history of the UMWA.”
Availability: Free on YouTube, Archive . org, (possibly Kanopy), and also available on the subscription services HBO Max and The Criterion Channel
Tumblr media
2. 1776 (1972), dir. Peter H. Hunt
“THE AWARD WINNING MUSICAL COMES TO THE SCREEN!
The film focuses on the representatives of the Thirteen original colonies who participated in the Second Continental Congress. 1776 depicts the three months of deliberation (and, oftentimes, acrimonious debate) that led up to the signing of one of the most important documents in the History of the United States, the Declaration of Independence.”
Availability: available for rental on Vudu, YouTube, and Amazon
Tumblr media
3. DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (1991), dir. Julie Dash
“Languid look at the Gullah culture of the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia where African folk-ways were maintained well into the 20th Century and was one of the last bastion of these mores in America.”
Availability: TubiTV and possibly Kanopy. Also available for rental on YouTube, AppleTV, GooglePlay, KinoNow and through a subscription service via Amazon.
Tumblr media
4. ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN (1976), dir. Alan J. Pakula
“THE MOST DEVASTATING DETECTIVE STORY OF THIS CENTURY.
In the run-up to the 1972 elections, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward covers what seems to be a minor break-in at the Democratic Party National Headquarters. He is surprised to find top lawyers already on the defense case, and the discovery of names and addresses of Republican fund organizers on the accused further arouses his suspicions. After the editor of the Post runs with the story and assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to it, they find the trail leading higher and higher in the Republican Party—and eventually into the White House itself.”
Availability: Streaming on HBO Max and available for rental via YouTube
Tumblr media
5. A FACE IN THE CROWD (1957), dir. Elia Kazan
“POWER! HE LOVED IT! HE TOOK IT RAW IN BIG GULPFULS … HE LIKED THE TASTE, THE WAY IT MIXED WITH THE BOURBON AND THE SIN IN HIS BLOOD!
The rise of a raucous hayseed named Lonesome Rhodes from itinerant Ozark guitar picker to local media rabble-rouser to TV superstar and political king-maker. Marcia Jeffries is the innocent Sarah Lawrence girl who discovers the great man in a back-country jail and is the first to fall under his spell.”

Documentaries to Watch: Harlan County, USA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Director Barbara Kopple films a 1973 miner's strike at Brookside Mine owned by Duke Power company. Kopple and her crew spent years with the families depicted in the film, documenting the dire straits they encountered while striking for safer working conditions, fair labor practices, and decent wages. She followed them to picket in front of the Stock Exchange in New York City, filming interviews with people affected by black lung disease, and miners being shot at while striking.

Wednesday, July 12.
1970s.
Ah, those were the days...
...not that we were there, of course. But we can sure as sugar pretend: listen to dusty vinyl records, grow our hair in all manner of styles, write on typewriters, watch films from the innovative "New Hollywood" directors such as Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Barbara Kopple, and Francis Ford Coppola if we're feeling artistic, neigh, intellectual (or sit down with Star Wars, Jaws, Rocky, and Saturday Night Fever if we're not), go to a lot of protests, recall our most grisly, harrowing memories from 'Nam, wear high-waisted trousers, and try to sneak into Fleetwood Mac's ever destructive, irresistibly sexy inter-band drama.
In short, there was a lot happening in the 1970s, or indeed, the #70s, all of it big, bold, colorful, yet earthy, and very often brilliant. It was a decade of immense cultural, political, and societal change, much of it for the better, and much of it that, at the very least, continues in spirit to our own day. The 70s is not such a period of time, indeed, but a state of mind.

SPECIAL EDITION ERNEST HEMINGWAY
Ernest Hemingway is described as the « God of Art” and a “Lost Generation” representative. He won several literature prices in many countries. He is known for his unique narrative talents to his favorite themes which is adventure, surpassing oneself and major political battles. The writer of The Old Man and the Sea is one of the most influent novelists of the 20th century. This week is gonna be a special week dedicate to this very famous writer and his legacy.
TODAY WE SPEAK ABOUT THE CURSE OF HIS FAMILY AND HOW PARIS INFLUENCED HIM. TWO ARTICLES BY I.FOURGEAUD AND M.FREITAS.
The terrible curse of the Hemingway family
By Iris Fourgeaud
For many generations, the family of Ernest Hemingway was victim of strange suicides. This gossip started due to the release of the documentary of Ernest grand-daughter, Mariel Hemingway. The documentary portrayed the highly estemeed writer and journalist with terrible allegations. In which we will go in depth about those.
Drugs problems or Random Suicides ?
There have been several suicides in the Hemingway family. This includes his father, who killed himself when Ernest was only 29, three of his siblings (Ernest Jr., Ursula, and Leicester), and his granddaughter, Margaux. Margaux, who was a famous model, took her own life by overdosing on barbiturates.
Mariel Hemingway describes her family as extremely creative but victims to mental health problems and addiction.
Ernest's last days were extremely troubled, and while it seems as though loved ones did try to help him, he ended up succumbing to his mental illnesses. 1960 was the year when things began to really take a turn for the worse.
Ernest had left Cuba to live in New York City but had traveled to Spain for a photo shoot with Life. Reports of his deteriorating health began circulating, but he assured his wife Mary that he was fine. He ended up getting treated at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. And then went through electroconvulsive therapy for at least 15 times. He was diagnosed with depression, a few medical experts at the time thought his state was due to abusing drugs like Ritalin.
The horrendous secrets
“I grew up watching a family that was completely amazing and creative but also destructive and self medicating. All of them, they were addicts. I didn’t want to end up like that. I was on a mission," said Mariel Hemingway. Shortly after the release of the documentary by Barbara Kopple in 2013.
“Running From Crazy”, Mariel shares that she believes her own father, Jack Hemingway, sexually abused her sisters Margaux and Joan (her father passed away in 2000). Mariel told CNN, that although she doesn't remember Jack abusing her, she remembers sleeping in her mother's room, which she thinks could have been a way for her mother to protect her. She also added that Jack may not have known what he was doing because he'd be black-out drunk.
However, nobody talked about mental illness in her family up until recently. “Nobody spoke about anything. It was a different generation," Mariel said.
“We were just like the Kennedy family”, said Mariel. The documentary was presented at the Sundance Film Festival. She reflected on her past, and says herself that she suffered from heavy depression and had suicidal thoughts. “We were this American family followed by this damned curse” Mariel said.
The title of the documentary is strongly percussive, however despite every horrible accusations, nowadays, his granddaughter Mariel, has made it her mission to spread awareness about mental illness. We can Learn more about Ernest Hemingway's life and his and his family's battle with mental illness in the documentary “Hemingway”, released in 2021.

Ernest Hemingway and la ville lumière
By Maya Freitas
Ernest Miller Hemingway, famous American writer known for his novel, “Le Vieil homme à la Mer” have been for a long time inspired by Paris. Symbol of freedom after World War II for Americans, the City of Light quickly became synonymous with modernity.
On the advice of the American novelist Sherwood Anderson, the young Ernest Hemingway, then 22 years old, landed in Paris on December 22nd, 1921, accompanied by his wife. From his arrival in the capital, Hemingway trained, improved his style, met many English-speaking writers, and marked the beginning of a long road with Paris.
The influence of Parisian places
From the small miserable apartment, 74 rue du Cardinal-Lemoine, to the bar "le Falstaff" 42 rue du Montparnasse, Ernest Hemingway has been able to immerse himself in the diversity of Parisian places in his own way.
The writer began his writings in his small apartment whose walls "smell of musty and cabbage" as he described it in “Paris est une fête». He then discovered the refuge of English-speaking expatriates, "Shakespeare and Company". There he met the American poet Gertrude Stein, who encouraged him to abandon his journalism side to devote himself fully to literature.
Alcohol at the service of literature
Known to be an insatiable drinker, Hemingway frequented many bars such as "Le Dôme", "La Coupole" or even "La Rotonde". But very quickly, the famous American writer established his headquarters at "La Clauserie des Lilas", where he completed in just six weeks. One of his many masterpieces “Le soleil se lève aussi”, considered one of the great English-language novels of the twentieth century.
Ernest Hemingway finishes his ego during an improvised boxing match between himself and his Canadian writer friend, Morley Callaghan, in the bar "Le Falstaff". The author of "The Gatsby", drunk by the rain of blows but especially vexed, was convinced that Fitzgerald had done it on purpose to better humiliate him.
Despite his many adventures in the Parisian bars as well as a penniless arrival, Ernest Hemingway was able to extract the benefits of the City of Light. A lost lover of the capital, the latter was able to highlight his vision of Paris in his books and writings.

any movie recs??? 👀
oh anon, i love you and you have no idea the can of worms you have just opened. heck yeah do i have movie recs...
movies i've loved recently:
Rye Lane {incredible modern rom-com, awesome lead performances, gorgeous to look at, takes the "one chaotic day together" narrative structure and runs full speed with it}
Bound {the wachowskis' first movie! a very intense neo-noir thriller. the directing is giving "we're already conceptualizing the matrix" which means they direct the hell out of it}
Harlan County, USA and American Dream {both essential documentaries by Barbara Kopple about union efforts in Pennsylvania in the 70s and Minnesota in the 80s respectively. if you're then looking for a narrative feature with similar themes, Norma Rae is great}
Duck Soup / The Gold Rush / The General {three classics of the Hollywood Golden Age for one! go with Chaplin's The Gold Rush if you want snowy antics in Alaska, Buster Keaton's The General if you wanna see a guy almost die on a train many, many times, and the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup if you want a sharp-witted satire on fascism and war}
movies i personally never shut about:
All the President's Men {it's so sexy when people are good at their jobs! especially if that job is journalist who takes down the nixon administration! if you want a thriller that isn't bloody or overtly sexual, this is the thriller for you!}
The Full Monty {a comedy i believe everyone needs to watch. a 90 minute delight about a group of unemployed blue-collar guys trying to stage a strip show. given it came out in 1997, it's not nearly as dated as you think it'll be and stars a tumblr sexyman hall of famer, Robert Carlyle}
The Vast of Night {weird to describe a movie as gentle sci-fi horror, but that's exactly what this is. it centers around one eerie night in a 1950s town where the local radio station manager and a telephone operator begin picking up strange signals. it has vibes for days and does a lot with a very simple story and small budget}
Cure {...okay, this movie is not for everyone, but if you're down for a very unsettling horror movie, i cannot recommend this one highly enough. the premise is a detective investigating a series of murderers where each murderer has no memory of committing the crime. one of the best-directed movies i've ever seen. like it'll have you holding your breath in scene after scene}
The Last Waltz {since i recommended two other documentaries, i can't resist also recommending my favorite. it's Martin Scorsese's concert film of The Band's final show together. a great movie to put on in the background while cooking / doing chores since it's mostly musical performances, or you can do what i do and stare at Rick Danko the entire time!}
okay, i'll quit while i'm ahead now. if you're looking for movies in a specific genre (drama, comedy, romance, horror, sci-fi, sci-fi horror, horror comedy, romantic comedy with a dash of horror, throw me anything), let me know! i seriously could talk about movies for the rest of my life.
