After watching Infinity War and considering all the relationships and dynamics between characters, I've concluded that Marvel really did the Black Widow injustice by not pairing her with Captain America.
But first, I will admit that I am equally both a Buckynat and a Romanogers shipper. I know how Widow's romance in the comics goes but I also enjoy her developed relationship with Cap in the films. Now, I am absolutely fine if Black Widow ends up with Bucky (somehow) by the end of Avengers 4 since I do ship them in the comics. And I am also perfectly fine if she ends up (somehow) with Cap. I think for people who only watch the films, Buckynat might seem out of nowhere whereas Cap would make sense given how their relationship has developed in the MCU. Again, I am perfectly fine with either route.
But in terms of what I have seen in the films, it was terribly wrong for Whedon to pair Nat with Bruce and not let CapWidow run. I completely understand where he was trying to go with it but it was poorly executed and developed. The idea wasn't that bad (if very random) but not the execution. And now we have to waste precious screentime fixing the BruceNat issue and resolving something that would never come to be. I'm the kind of person who usually ships pairings based on how I've seen their relationship developed on the screen. And I usually consider the books/comics as separate verses from the film works. So if Person A is paired with B instead of C in the film then okay their relationship is developing into a romance. I see the flower blooming and I know it'll be a beautiful blossom. But if Person A is paired with C in the books/comics then I tend to ship that pairing in that respective universe.
And, as much as Scarlett Johansson has said that she doesn't see a romance between Widow and Cap, I think it would have turned out better than BruceNat. You have two people who are almost polar opposites and yet they somehow end up as the working mom and working dad of the group. There is a deep friendship that's rooted between them and their dynamic is so fascinating. Here is America's golden boy whose morals are clear as day versus a morally ambiguous spy and both ultimately want what's good for everyone but take differing approaches. How interesting is that?
Now, I know Steve has a thing with Sharon Carter both in the comics and now in the MCU but the only reason I couldn't find myself shipping them in the MCU together is because they were suddenly together with hardly any development at all. They went from "hi neighbor" to smooching. Of course, they obviously had some development off screen, nowhere to be seen or found but we're to assume they've been seeing each other in the years between film events. Even so, Tony and Pepper have more development and their romance gets mentioned at least once in almost every film, regardless if Pepper is present or not. They had a slow burn romance that turned out successful due to the chemistry and great acting. On the other hand, we also have Vision & Wanda who didn't have as slow of a romance but they made it obvious from the get-go that the two have a thing for each other. You also have Gamora & Starlord as another successful pairing with the two of them (sort of) opposites of each other in many ways. It started out with two people distrusting of each other but thrust into a situation where they must work together for the greater good. From there, Gamora and Peter develop a bond of love, friendship and trust.
Romanogers has all of these aspects. The only difference is that they are only friends and nothing more. Which, to be honest, I kind of like. So I am sort of conflicted on whether of not I want there to be romance or keep CapWidow as just friends because I like that they have a love for each other but it's also a platonic love and respect. BUT, if I had to choose, I would choose the romance without a doubt. I keep remembering what Patty Jenkins once said about Diana's romance with Steve Trevor. No person should have to be an island. And I've always thought that Natasha deserved someone who fully trusted her and treated her with respect and as an equal. Bruce definitely respects her and, I think, loves her (?) but trust is still an issue between them. Especially considering she tricked him to summon the Hulk (but with good reason). And, based on the rate of events of Infinity War, I don't think there's any time for them to mend their romance AND establish a full trust between them. But I really want Natasha to be with someone. To have a partner she can enjoy her life with and not just a business partner or good pal. She deserves a romantic love just like all her other teammates. I also really hope that, when everything is done and over with, someone uses the Infinity Stone(s) to fix Nat's sterilization. But I doubt that will happen.
I like the way Steve and Nat's relationship has developed on the screen and, although I like how it's platonic, I believe Nat deserves a proper romance. I don't want it to end with Nat not ending up with anybody and, well, we also know BruceNat is pretty much dead given the poor reception. Nat shouldn't have to end up with no one. It is not fair to her character considering almost every other male hero on the team has had some sort of official romance (terribly written or not). She is already incapable of having children, what more do you want to take from her? I would be fine with Nat ending up with Bucky but I was disappointed to see in Infinity War that she doesn't have any semblance of development. No development of herself, or her own arc, or with anyone. Even BruceNat doesn't get any development nor an official goodbye. However, she does remain a constant with Steve, of course. No surprise there.
So, again, I'm just shipping it the way I've been seeing it on the screen. Steve and Natasha's relationship in the MCU has all the ingredients you need for a flavorful and proper romance. Tell me, if they did wind up kissing at the end of it all, would you be surprised? Would you think, 'what the hell, that came out of nowhere!' ? Would it be as random or out of the blue as BruceNat was? Sorry, I don't hate BruceNat at all, by the way. I simply don't ship it. Don't hate but don't ship it.
I will be incredibly upset if Natasha ends up with no one. What, she can't have children AND a proper romance with someone? Screw that. She has worked her ass off, expecting nothing in return. Gamora was taken and raised to be an assassin, constantly surrounded by enemies, so she really cherishes the family she has with the Guardians. And she also cherishes the love she has with Peter Quill.
Natasha Romanoff deserves to have that void filled in too. She deserves better. Perhaps the writers think it would degrade her character to give her a 2nd love interest (especially after BruceNat failed) but it doesn't work like that. It's been years already since the events of BruceNat so it wouldn't be awkward if Nat has her eyes on someone else by now. And giving a powerful female character a love interest does not make her any less of a powerful female character. Even badass General Okoye has a lover (although their relationship status is currently complicated atm).
Natasha Romanoff deserves better.

List of characters for my comic as of right now.
Hello I am working on a comic for school and I want your thoughts on the characters.
Trevo- "MC" mute white boy from communist Maine. Has eyes and uses them as a stand in for Izu's. Horribly frostbitten face makes dealing with pain difficult as he already deals with a lot Frontline fighter isn't an option. Power is making sapient origami ice elementals.
Izu- other "MC" blind filipino girl who's fists and words tell her story. she has a voice, some level of pain tolerance, and plenty of dexterity she uses these talents to help rrevo with his weaknesses. She usually charges into a fight headfirst once she knows where it is. Power is controlling what forces impacting her clothes do.
Eejay- MC of a different chapter. Korean American adoptee who has slight anger issues and is slightly too clingy to friends. Smarter than implied by character design due to bulk of the kind that makes you shaped like a friend and muscle are present. Name is due to initial Boomer adoptive parents not understanding how naming convention or spelling works original given name is Yi Jae Won. Power is summoning mind controlled electric wasps in between two pieces of cloth he can see.
Ayowase: Lesbian aunt no. 1. one of two characters in cast that wasn't adopted. Slime lady with a slightly detatched personality almost always talks as if she is half paying attention. Often confused by human society due to our habit of blowing our problems up and worrying so much about differences. Power is conditions based hydrokinesis
Luna: Lesbian aunt no. 2 razor focused moth lady. One of few characters who carries a gun of any kind. Impatient and too intent on being self sufficient similar character arc to toph from avatar. She is working towards being more interdependent with Ayowase and not a distant loner. By the time of their intro this issue has been mostly solved but not quite. Power is manipulating the interaction between the air and metal objects she is touching.
Schroder- the other white guy although he is not unfamiliar with poverty having grown up a street thief a la Oliver twist. Who is the crazy uncle. A silly short twink with the classic I'm not dumb I'm a dumbass energy. Power of mimicing other people's magic abilities by putting on their hat.
Jete- slime dad. Ayowase's biological father and all of the above characters adoptive father. Quiet and sad person who feels guilty for a lot of his choices feels that he is a selfish person because he only adopta children to forgive himself. Good caring understanding dad who is worryingly close to depression and possibly does have depression. Power is causing very small amounts of transition meatals to fission. With is used for nuke swords.
Thank you for reading this I enjoy these characters a lot.
