centaurworld au: horse as the next evil (origins)

@snickerzanddoodlez wants an au of centaurworld where horse essentially becomes the next nowhere king (cause of that whole "we're no so different, you and i" speech that elk gives her in the finale) and says i should write it. rn i am too busy and lazy to write anything too substantial BUT here are my plot musings for what this could look like

Rider is dying in the finale. none of this goofy, wibbly-wobbly "oh haha we make it look like she's dying but she didn't!" no she's dying for realsies

this is still distressing for Horse. obviously

I'm not sure how Horse would get the Rift Key, since the Woman has it and kills the recombined Nowhere King with it

side note: am I dumb or does it not actually tell us what happened to the key and the Woman afterwards. like, does she die? is the key destroyed? does she just take the key and go back to living with the Beartaur? are she and the Beartaur roommates? are they dating? is this a friends-with-benefits/situationship sorta thing? so many questions, not enough answers

ANYWAYS

we know the Rift Key can recombine things

and it is used to combine things that weren't combined before to make minotaurs (which we see step-by-step in "The Ballad of Becky Apples" with Bayden and almost Water Baby)

side note 2: Bayden NEVER GETS TURNED BACK. when Crandy recognizes him, he (re)gains control of his body and is the dominant personality I guess? (rip to the creatures he was combined with) but like...they don't fix him. he just stays in that form. so that does seem to suggest Woman destroyed it or took it with her or hid it or something unless Bayden just chose to stay that way which I don't think makes sense BUT I DIGRESS

Horse is distraught

and Rider says it's okay (maybe even re-sings her lullaby) and she's ready to die

but Horse can't accept that

because she spent two seasons trying so hard to get back to Rider (heck we have at least two songs of Horse lamenting her fears of everything being all for naught) and what was the point if Rider dies now

so Horse gets the Rift Key

and the herd belatedly realizes what she's doing and try to stop her - especially Wammawink, I'd really wanna highlight her reaction - but they're too late

and Horse uses the key to combine herself and Rider to save Rider's life

leaving us with Rider-Horse-taur (much to Rider's horror)

so we can get some psychological horror of the two vying for control because Rider knows this is wrong and wants them to split again but Horse just can't let her go and is afraid that if they split, Rider will die, so the two are at odds within the same combined body

how exactly does this evolve to being the next Nowhere King? I'm still figuring that out, but the concept was intriguing enough to me that I wanted to write it

Bayden didn’t have a lot of access this year. He didn’t have a lot joy. He had a lot confusion being body switched with the only person he called friend besides a mute girl in this facility. He loved drawing deer. Stags. So Reindeer were going to be on his highlight list come Christmas. There was in a coloring book in the art therapy room he’d been saving just for himself. All for himself. He’d hid it so no one else could find it until he was ready. Maybe it felt silly giving her a blank coloring book page for Christmas but it meant a lot to him. He still couldn’t decide if he angry or thankful for this switch because she was making it so complicated, but she saved his artwork when they cleared out his assisted living cottage. He didn’t have much in life of meaning left anymore. It was all he had. So Bayden put it on her doorstep, his doorstep actually. So many gifts they’d exchanged over the years but this one really pulled at his heart strings and it wasn’t even his heart beating in his chest anymore. It was so strange. The note he’d leave would be a little sassy, oh so Bayden, despite his outer shell. 

Merry Christmas. 

I’d been saving this one. I figured the only way I could really enjoy it is let you color it or it wouldn’t really be me at all. Eff you body snatcher.

BAYDEN WARDEYN.  

“Now you’re going to tell me not to have a dirty mind and then refer to our live as day time television? I think we’ve both sat around in that community room enough that Sammy and all the characters that make up every piece of sand that fall through that hourglass do nothing but think about sex and who’s having it with who.” He laughed proving he watched Days of Our Lives too.

“Speaking of-” He clicked on his tv as the time neared not wanting to miss it. “-I have to find out what happens with Marlena and Black at the auction and all the jewels. That other she-bitch is determined to out-bid them for her son to impress her daughter he can prove he loves her still which leads to sex. All things leads to sex. All things are motivated by thus. Even the scenes that aren’t about that are really about that.” He laughed. “It’s what it’s all about Celestis. Might as well get used to it now.” He kept laughing.

As for his favorite fairy tale?

“Uhhhh… I don’t know. Do you really mean fairy tale or just Disney cartoons because you always see me watching those? Because I’d probably pick Fox and the Hound. I don’t think that’s a fairy tale. It doesn’t have much a happy ending. It’s a tragedy. Actually, it’s sad fuck. I don’t know why it’s my favorite. It just is. It’s the best one I watch over and over, but if I have to pick an actual fairy tale fuck, I don’t know. Um…. does it have to be Disney because I’d probably go for Shrek. If it has to be Disney Beauty and the Beast hands down. Best music live or cartoon. Somebody falls in love with you even though you’re big mean asshole that never leaves his castle? Yeah, that’s the best one.”

Fiona picked being a grossy Ogre herself to be with a grumpy ol Ogre love over her own beautiful form too. Bayden may have had a running theme on fairy tales and love. Fox and the Hound went deeper than that.

“You know what one I hate though? Pinocchio. That one drives me crazy. I hate it when that one comes on. It’s so eyeroll worthy. It’s not even about all that I wanna be a real boy bullshit. It’s how he’s judged. Like damn Honest John and Gideon trick the fuck out of him. He’d never been in the world a day in his life and father sent him out in it all alone with no guidance. Worst father in the fucking world. Geppetto sucks and Pinocchio got all the flack. The fact he’s a puppet is ridiculous symbolism in how everyone dragging him around and he has no idea how to get. He honestly can’t even when he tries. He’s winds up in that puppet show. He may not have no strings but that doesn’t mean he aint in no cage. Fuck his song. No. Then this cricket is all harping on him about his choices like he’s making bad ones and has very little brains? No fuck that cricket. Judging his choices like he had the same choices someone else had. He didn’t see it from Pinocchio’s shoes. He saw it from his own privileged cricket shoes that already had an education and yada yada yada. Pinocchio didn’t even know what school. I gotta go to school my ass. Who sends a magic wooden boy to school like that’s fucking normal? Dumbass dad. Everything that puppet went through is asshole idiot Geppetto’s fault. Pinocchio just stood there not understanding anything trying to be nice to everyone he ever met even the con men because he was naive as fuck because his dad didn’t teach him better until it was too late. Yeah yeah. The blue ass fairy turns him into a real boy at the end. Big fucking deal. She waits until his dying ass breath to go oh I guess we’ve finally let life break you I guess that counts as good enough then. Here ya go. No. That story sucks. That’s the worst story ever told.”

Then someone answered on the Cuban other end of the phone and Bayden started his order.

Woah Nelly. Bayden just went off on a passive aggressive rant paralleling his life in relation to the wooden boy without saying so of course. He didn’t realize how obvious that was. At least it would have been obvious to any one of his nurses and doctors had he said it to them.

When he got off the phone he said, “They’ll be here in about 30 minutes.”

Never any fun? Him?

“Oh!” He laughed about to get her again. “That must be why a stick in the mud like you hangs out with me. It makes so much sense now.”  

Then she called the state of their relationship right now an Ice Age phase.

That got to him more than he thought it should. She wasn’t wrong. It was some sort of miracle they were talking right now, that she was in his house again, that he was even in his house again at all.

Then she spilled what she had meant. She managed to get a hold of some of his stuff before they tossed it. His stuff only consisted of his art or his flash drives. He didn’t own anything and his mother confiscated his guitar and it was left back at her house for now. That meant the majority of what Celestis could have saved was his art. He didn’t know which, but he knew that’s what it meant. She had his sketchbooks.

That mechabitch of a neighbor of his was going to be so-so-so-so disturbed at that zero patience lack of impulse control neighbor of hers.

He flung his arms around her Ms No Touchy Worse than Kuzco Rogue. He was going to totally throw off her groove and test her risky powers without a thought about it in the world and squeezed. He acted like it wasn’t a big deal, like fuck it.

Fuck everything. But those sketches were his heart and soul. He put everything into those. He just reacted.

“Thank you.”

He just reacted without thinking like he always does.  

       !!!!!!!. WHAT i s WRONG w i t h HIM.  She covered her ears && turned on her heel walking away from Bayden.  Distancing herself from him yet she could still hear every word he was saying.  His mind was worse then just dirty, it was greasy too.  Ignoring the cleverness of the way he correlated Days of Our Lives.    Whipping around lowering her hands to look at him with full on annoyance  “ONLY o n c e.  && that was the correlation between you && that hissy cougar of a nurse.”  The way her eyes squinted just a bit, as if the sun was in her eyes as she talked to him as he knew exactly who she meant, but she looked up to him.  The dynamic of Bayden && Nurse Janet was much later explained from him. “She’s very territorial of you, that it made me wonder you’re relationship.”  However outside of that?  No.

       “I’d go mentally insane with SEXUAL f r u s t r a t i o n if that was the case.  Some of us can’t afford to think about sex && who’s having it with who all the damn time Bayden.”  With the restrictions of physical touch, she just couldn’t think like that.  Celestis- in Rowan’s body had to strive different approaches as she knew she appears a bit of a closet dyke, or perhaps closet lesbian?

       “You are so fucking weird Bayden.” Celestis was at a loss of words.  Putting her hands up for surrender on this topic.  It’ll drive her quite insane challenging his deranged philosophy.  Celestis didn’t even want to know if she dared questioned the thoughts in her mind that he was suggesting.  After all, what about themselves?  About what kind of relationship they held && what it was going to evolve too.  She felt it was very arguable, but the topic of itself was dangerous territory && a lot of uncomfortableness.  “I just can’t with you right now.”

       FINALLY a topic to take her mind off s e x.  Any more of it && she would start to feel a little uncomfortable.  “I’m guessing you never read Mannix’s work.”  Not that she found anything wrong with it.  Bayden was right.  It wasn’t quite a fairy tale, but a novel.  Depressing as the novel is the little Disney cartoon barely captures the depth of sadness the novel actually has, it’s a book she would never recommend to the weak hearted, yet animal loving types like Bayden, it could be a bit far more tragic.  “What makes you think all fairytales have happy endings?  There are quite a few fairytales that don’t.”  She seemed to mention gently, as they were like North && South.  They pointed in opposite directions in a way, as in he was more involved with movies as she was more involved with books.  So he liked red heads && brunettes'.  Shocking!   

       Going completely silent during Bayden’s hate ted talk on the topic of Pinocchio, that she could tell, was talking about his own self.  The things we disagree with in life speak a lot about ourselves.  As he could write a very good essay on the topic, if it ever arised, it would be interesting to read.  Yet there was something he said that stuck with her for a moment:

       He-saw-it-from-his-own-priviledged-cricket-shoes-that-already-had-an-education-&&-yada-yada-yada’.  A lightbulb had came on behind her eyes, as it spoke out in the kind of way that she feels she treats Bayden like that sometimes.  Maybe even a lot more than she wished.  Not that she had a very good education, as she didn’t finish Middle School properly, but she kept to educating herself within the hopeless hospital programs as much as she could.  In a way her experiences, && his own were very different.  The materials she could get her hands on.

       Another example that randomly came to mind, that she probably never properly explained to Bayden that started to sink in was realizing her mistake on the whole why she’s so anti-Witch Coven.  Claims of it being a CULT might stick a little strange to someone like Bayden who has a more innocent view due to his family d y n a m i c.

       The other?  BODY s w a p p i n g.   Raising her arm to her neck she’d rub her neck, digging her nails into her own skin, dragging her nails into flesh.  She knew about the dangers.  Spending some time in someone else’s body, && the senses of self && memories start to shift as being them occupying there body, there brain, as you’re trying to change to adapt to better fit the new form.  Physically && psychologically.  However, that night would have gone wrong regardless within the depression she was in, Bayden’s desire for answers, the wait that separated the both of them when they met up.  Interrogated && heavily/relentlessly questioned nearly side by side of each other was a little to much at the time, but, she can’t deny listening now, she felt negligent.

       “That’s fast.”  Celestis said the first thing to come to her mind, avoiding the thoughts clouding her mind, correlating the dots to his rant on the topic of Pinnochio as she is to blame sometimes.  

       She’d make that snarling noise.  “Excuse me?  Take that back!  I’m not old-fashioned.  I just progress like a TORTOISE.  Seriously s l o w.”  Yet she could relate to the oh so seriousness.  Her life was terribly serious.  Yet she doesn’t truly avoid enjoyable activities.  She just avoids anything with animals.  Horrifyingly crowded area’s most the time.  Money related places.  She enjoys doing activities, that meet with her agenda, && desires. 

       KARMA is a b i t c h.  LIFE is a b i t c h.  This world is full of mysteries, that MANKIND has not even s c r a t c h e d the surface to see what’s really going on.  So much emotions bubbled up the surface, she forgot to guard herself from the dangers of her zero patience lack of impulse control neighbor of hers.

       As much as she couldn’t deny the seconds of the tight embrace was something that Celestis could realize was nice.  Perhaps something she’d rarely felt in her lifetime.  Went terribly wrong.  Sensing something wasn’t right before she could pull Bayden off her, her soul rushed out of ROWAN’S b o d y && into BAYDEN’S own v o l i t i o n.  The first thing she felt was the cold.  The way violent tiny needles of pain stabbed at the flesh ripping itself from Rowan into Bayden’s.  The temperature became an unbearable feeling.  Feeling the way the muscles began to spasm from the awful, bone-numbing cold as she settled in a a different body. 

       A wave of dizziness && nausea swept through her in Bayden’s body as she stumbled, fighting to stay on her feet, but she found the body mass of himself entirely different then Rowans.  Just like that, she was registering she was in Bayden’s body, as she ended up unable to keep herself on his own two feet ending up collapsing down onto the floor.  Determined to just lay there, unmoving, as floodlights flared to life as it all started in small blurs to visually  focus.  Everything became utterly different in someone else body.  The way they breathed, see, level of focus/thought process/what drugs ran in his veins, control of the limbs, the mass of it’s body, she can’t say they flatline during transitioning but the body ends up hurting in places she didn’t know could hurt && it wasn’t from just falling moments before.  Perhaps more the nervous system having to be entirely rewired?  Restart?  As if it sensed an invasion of the body pushing out it’s owner’s soul.  She was. . . she was in BAYDEN SHANNON WARDEYN’S body.

       Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.        Fuuuuuuuuuuuck.        Fuuuuuuuuuuck.        Fuuuuuuuuuck.        Fuuuuuuuuck.

Why you like it: Kim Dare is great at writing characters who you care deeply about.

Axel and Baden are interested in each other from their first meeting, but Axel has the sense to realise they often don’t understand each other, and takes it slow.

Baden knows how vulnerable he would be if he ever went against his family’s warnings and trusted a human. 

To the extent that Axel has ever thought about the wolf laws, which he was taught about in school, he thinks they’re pretty much unenforced and irrelevant nowadays. 

One I’ve reread many times. Published 2015. The second book in the series has yet to be published.

[This is going to be the last of the PCs from the Rise of the Runelords game I post; I'm going to move onto other campaigns, like Curse of the Crimson Throne, Legacy of Fire, and Council of Thieves. Daisy Moonblossom was a very fun character, with her quotes like, "you would be happy if you thought less" and "I didn't think it would kill him; I only thought it would torture him forever!". She told me later that she didn't want to play a healer, she wanted to play a fighter, and so decided to be kind of a brat about it when it was decided by the group that it was "her turn". Everyone loved it anyway. So much so that the same player played her surly goth little sister, Belladonna, in Curse of the Crimson Throne, and the Moonblossom clan has been a recurring name drop in my games, and spawned multiple PCs and NPCs in the games run by @canwefixitnoitsfucked. Here's the original art for Daisy, done by one of the other players in that game:

Because of the whole "don't really want to heal" thing, a warpriest was the perfect choice for converting Daisy from D&D 3.5 to Pathfinder 1e. The Icicle Crown was a personal addition to Rise of the Runelords. The art for Lamatar Bayden was so cool, it seemed a shame that he was just a wight (especially up against a 9th level party). So I gave him an artifact, and then Daisy got it, and she got to go from "magical girl inspired" to "full on transformation sequence". The original version used various spells from Spell Compendium, so has been updated for Pathfinder applicability.]

Daisy Moonblossom CR 14 CN Humanoid (cold, human) This woman is short, muscular and beautiful, her arms bearing delicate Varisian tattoos. She appears to be made of ice, with inhumanly pale skin and hair, with a crown of icicles growing out of her brow. She carries an enormous mace in the shape of a rose, and wears the holy symbol of Desna prominently around her neck and on her clothing.

Daisy Moonblossom was born lucky. Although never very smart and with a penchant for solving her problems with violence, she was both charming and perceptive, and was a natural to enter the priesthood of Desna. There, she received training as a warpriest, a traveling crusader to bring dreams and joy to those who needed them, and a pummeling to those who deserved it. And she was able to do all of those things, joining up with a team of adventurers to defend Sandpoint from first a goblin incursion, and then a ghoulish serial killer. Aldern Foxglove, the Skinsaw Man, became obsessed with Daisy. Perhaps this is because she reminded him of his murdered wife, or perhaps because he detected her bloodthirsty streak. Appropriately, she was the one who freed the revenant of his wife, and then bashed Foxglove’s skull in.

On Hook Mountain, Daisy made two discoveries that would change her life. First was the friendship of the star monarch Roramoru, who happily serves her as a mount and confidante to this day. The second was the Icicle Crown, a lost artifact made by the White Witches of Irrisen in centuries past, sitting on the brow of the wight Lamatar Bayden. Daisy didn’t realize its true magical potential when she put it on, thinking it would just protect her against the cold, but it transformed her into a being of elemental ice. As a divine caster, Daisy can use remove curse to take off the crown and resume her human appearance when she needs to, but does so less and less these days.

Rather than explore the dungeons of Runeforge and take the fight to Runelord Karzoug, Daisy chose to remain behind at Jorgenfist to learn more about her Varisian heritage and to help rally an army of giants against Karzoug’s influence. Daisy is considered by many of the giants of the Kodar Mountains to be somewhere between a guardian angel and a bogey, as she will gladly aid giants who play nice and slay those who don’t. The legends that have built around Ice Princess Daisy vary from clan to clan. Some giants claim she is an unusually beautiful cold rider, or maybe a miniature frost giant, or possibly a divine agent of Desna herself. Daisy is happy to keep them guessing.

Although she is a talented healer, Daisy Moonblossom would rather inflict damage than cure it. She usually spends a round or two casting enhancing spells on herself, then wades into melee. If enemies keep their distance, she pelts them with ranged spells cast from the Icicle Crown, or simply uses air walk to close the gap. Daisy isn’t a very skilled combat rider, so although she does use Roramoru’s support, the star monarch typically drops Daisy off rather than carry her into the fray. 

Icicle Crown (minor artifact) When not worn by a creature (occupying the head slot), this appears to be a delicate silver tiara studded with diamonds and sapphires. When put on, it transforms into ice, and transforms the wearer as well, affecting her as per an ice body spell for as long as the crown is worn. The Icicle Crown allows the wearer to cast the following spells with charges, as if it were a staff: Snowball (1 charge) Frigid Touch (1 charge) Wall of Ice (2 charges) Cone of Cold (2 charges) Icy Prison (2 charges) The Icicle Crown has 10 charges, and regains 1d4 charges a day. If its last charge is expended, the Icicle Crown falls off of the wearer’s head and becomes dormant for 30 days. This is the only way to remove the Icicle Crown without the use of remove curse or a similar effect, or the death of its wearer. CL 13th; Weight 4 lbs.

the nowhere king is still one of the coolest most interesting concepts for a villain i've ever come across... and i say concept because season 2 of centaurworld didn't go super great.

like the pacing was just... off. it took an entire season of build up for us to even See him for the first time and then we learn his whole deal immediately within like 35 minutes of the finale. it's just too much packed in - and this isn't so much the writers' fault as it is netflix's because we all know netflix loves to cancel animated shows after 1-2 seasons so i feel like the writers did their best to squeeze everything they had planned into the painfully small amount of room they were given.

there are scenes in that finale that tell me the writers Wanted to build certain things up more and if they had been able to it would have been one of the most stunning finales in any show. like the sequence where we see the elk slowly deteriorating into nothing but bones and rot from the magical radiation of the key. or the scene where the mutated bayden swoops in and the birdtaurs realize who he is (the whole final battle sequence is pretty fucking impressive even with all of s2's flaws). or the scene where the general stabs rider.

SERIOUSLY that one could have been MONUMENTAL like it's pretty insane as is but the problem is. we never really got to know the general. it's obvious the writers wanted to establish a father-daughter dynamic between him and rider, but it just... didn't pan out with all the time constraints. but had they been able to establish that properly... oh my god. having him turn around and stab her without remorse would have been fucking NUTSSS it would have been so good. centaurworld could have been so good!!!!!!!!!!! fuck!!!!!! damn you netflix

#overall i enjoy centaurworld and like. #the concept behind the nowhere king and what it would have looked like if it had been executed properly is really impressive to me #like that's the sort of thing i aim for with my own writing. build up that actually pays off and is enjoyable to sit through #all these bits of foreshadowing that click together. the answer was in front of you all along - why weren't you paying attention? #idk i love it and i love story telling so so so so so so much #other than ^ all that up there my other major gripe with centaurworld is how it doesn't know what it wants its humor to be #a lot of the show IS funny and then there's like a billion fart jokes and you're like. who is this for. #animation is top notch though no complaints there
