Had a Writers Guild meeting at McNally this past Tuesday, and since I rarely get to go down to Grant Park I picked up a few things for myself.
Had to be quick in Entertainment Exchange, though. If I’d stayed any longer, I would’ve walked out buying half the store!

Unaired Pilot
*The Unaired Pilot is a 60-minute pilot episode of Sherlock that was never aired. **The pilot follows the same plot as "A Study in Pink." The BBC decided (we thank them) that they wanted Sherlock to have 90 minute episodes and asked the team to remake it. ***The pilot episode was later released as an extra on the series' DVDs.

Something I don't see a lot in the arguments in favour of piracy is that: for a lot of foreign fans/viewers, piracy is our only option of accessing certain media. You know that awesome feeling when you meet online friends from far corners of the globe who have some how watched the same show as you? Yea, chances are they pirated that.
I remember when Glee was on air, and piracy was the only way I could get to watch the show at little cost (as Americans would, since it was free on TV) and within a reasonable time frame. I could theoretically wait till the DVD is out and my local HMV stocks it, but that would (a) cost lots of money that high school me didn't have, and (b) I would have to wait ages. I could also theoretically wait for my local channel to buy the rights to the show, but that would usually be at least a year late, and that is if the local channel buys the rights at all. (Plus, I was living at home at the time. watching it on local broadcast would mean convincing my parents to not watch what they wanted to watch and let me hoard the TV for an hour).
When I was getting into BBC Sherlock and Downton Abbey, I had friends studying in England and they very kindly helped me get the DVDs for the shows for cheap. It was great! However, DVDs are also regionally locked; after changing the region on my old laptop's built-in DVD player several times, I was locked out and there was a bunch of DVDs I could no longer play (until mum's friend bought me an external disc reader, but if I were to get that myself, that's another expenditure).
Even after I got into Marvel, I could not easily access the films and shows. Disney+ was first launced in the US in 2019; but my city—a fairly prominent city—didn't get the platform until late 2021. Before then, there were few ways for me to legally access anything within the Disney family. For a while, Marvel films and shows were on Netflix, but more often than not I was geolocked out of it. I could access them with a VPN, but VPNs are expensive and it's not always easy to find a reliable one.
In short, piracy is sometimes the only way someone from outside of where a show is created can get access to it. There was a time when shows and films revelled in being able to claim international fame, but anti-piracy movements and geolocking have made that difficult. I think there is definitely some value to media piracy if it allows people from all around the world to get access to media from other cultures.

Crowdsourcing question for the BBC Sherlock fandom oldies --
When TAB came out in January 2016, it was shown in select theatres with exclusive bonus behind-the-scenes content. This bonus content included Moffat giving a tour of the Victorian 221b set, and -- what I’m looking for specifically -- Moffat pointing out the cases that were meant to be referenced on the custom stained glass window Arwel made for the 221b entry door.
I already know which cases he named -- they’re listed here (x), and multiple other sources corroborate these, so I’m not worried about that. But if it’s possible, if it exists, I would still like to have the original video of this, for Reasons. It was meant to be exclusive content so I don’t think it’s in any DVD extras -- if it does exist, I imagine it would be in some bootlegged form?
This feels like a very long shot, but if anyone has any leads or memory of where to find this, I would be extremely grateful!

Question for folks who own official BBC Sherlock DVDs - do they come with commentary? There's this video on YouTube where Martin, Ben and Mark Gatiss are commenting as they watch ASIP - would I find that commentary on the DVDs?
@helloliriels @victorianpining @dinner--starving @fluffbyday-smutbynight
UPDATE for anyone else looking - here you can find all those DVD commentaries downloadable -

looooove when I open tumblr and see you going feral over batb 🥳 have you ever talked about the moment when like. it hit you that you were very much in love with this movie? did it hit the first viewing or did you have to let it cook a bit first?
YIPPEEE!!!!! okay yeah i mean here’s what i remember:
i saw it in theaters april 12th 2017 with my parents. i was ENCHANTED (winks at you specifically) from the very start. i truly remember just being so enamored with everything about it. every song every scene every change from the animated version i was like GOSH THIS FILM IS GENIUS. MAGNIFICENCE 🤌🤌
i remember driving back to the hotel (we were on a trip touring a potential university, twas spring break) with my parents and i literally could not stop saying “that was SO GOOD…. like that was So Good you guys.” and my parents were like yeah it was good ! but my brain was Buzzing
i remember coming back to school the following monday and telling my friend group that i saw it and one of them was like ah, it wasn’t good :/ and i like. had a 404 processing error. it GENUINELY did not ever ONCE occur to me that anyone could possibly think that this movie was not the greatest of all time. i think i was down bad immediately without truly realizing it though
i saw it in theaters a second time. i think with a friend who also really loved it? i actually forget that i had someone to be feral about it with irl for a minute. she somehow carried on with her life after a few months though… weird🤔
i also remember that summer watching it like. every day once i had the dvd and even worse when it was on netflix. if i had letterboxd back then it would have looked like yours does with enchanted afjskdj. i think there were days when i would watch it twice in one day
i remember telling my dad that i think it’s become my second favorite movie (i was afraid to let it beat out forrest gump just yet) and he was like “already?? you’re just swept up by it because it’s new to you still.” and i was like yeah probably but man i don’t know….
and i remember by my 18th birthday that year in november, i was given a big batb 2017 poster, and my sister-in-law (just my brother’s girlfriend at the time!) made me my own rose under the glass thing. so between april and november it progressively ramped up into a very clear love
i definitely knew i loved it A LOT right away, but i also remember being very guarded about it at first. like i was afraid to fully dive in. literally i didn’t even buy my own merch until like, 3 years in. i received gifts but i just?? i don’t know. i guess i was afraid to make it my whole personality if i was gonna fall out of love with it. which happened with bbc sherlock and i was very sad about that. i don’t get big interests very often so i didn’t expect to lose sherlock and i also wasn’t sure how long this would last.
i also Wasn’t on tumblr at the beginning. i joined tumblr in 2019 so for like two years i was just floating around in love with the film on my own accord. i wrote fic in my notes app and didn’t post it anywhere. i just watched it a lot and thought about it a lot and it was just like. secretly and silently the love of my life
but then when i finally got on ao3 i started posting fic and on tumblr i started talkin about it and i got louder about it slow but sure. i became a madman. and now i’m here. seven years later.

and i’m so so happy :)))
