A life size Alden cake scares me

where did you come up with that idea?

Alright so I was thinking of that one incorrect quote where Alvar goes "edaline? Sophie's funeral? will there be butterblasts?" and because the original meme talks about cake instead of butterblasts I started thinking about cake at Alden's planting for the meme, but since that ask said there was no cake I thought well I'll enjoy a sweet in his memory! So that really opens up the possibilities for both sweets and what "in his memory" means, which reminded me of how you can print things that are edible and it has really sharp images. So my first thought there was latte art because they've got latte art printers, but then I remembered I don't like coffee so that wouldn't really be enjoying something in his memory. However! Lattes aren't the only things you can print on, which reminded me of printed-on donuts, and then I remembered that one post about the one-direction cake that someone's mom kept in the freezer for five years because that had an edible image. So perhaps a printing of Alden for a cake in his memory. But one cake is awfully small for how many people would be there, so it should be his whole body so there's more cake. Of course the next train of thought that relates to cake and people is this one person I've seen on YouTube who makes hyper-realistic cake sculptures (using modeling chocolate) and once she made a cake sculpture of her head which was 3D and life size, so logically the next thought I'd have is a cake sculpture of Alden but make it his whole body! Then there can be Alden cake at the funeral in his memory and there's enough for everyone!

It strikes her at the oddest moments. There's a fairy in her bed. There’s a fairy in her bed and he has to set an alarm or he'll over sleep, wake up petulant and confused and rubbing grime out of his eyes. He takes so long to wash his hair. He takes sugar in his coffee and sometimes when she's stirring it in she remembers old stories about tiny creatures on the edge of flowers,  sipping nectar, or grandmothers who left out milk and honey for their "good neighbours". He has an apartment downtown with a landlord who refuses to fix the icebox and he doesn't know a single cooling spell. He has terrible taste in genre fiction and there's a selfish gremlin part of her that wants to pull him out of the story into reality and hold him down, hold him in one shape until it sticks. His autograph is illegible and it takes her a long time to realize why. Names have power and he wasn’t raised stupid. ...There's a distinct possibility he doesn't know the name he gave himself is misspelled and she's certainly not going to tell him. He gives her his true name one night, late, when they're sitting at the top of the waterfall tipsy on someone else's expensive wine and witnessed only by the stars and the moons --he has opinions about that second moon, too, don't get him started-- and he turns to her and says it as simple as anything. "That's me. That's my name. You're the only other person who knows it, at this point." It feels like a gift. It feels like a responsibility she can never set down, and at the time she can't imagine ever wanting to. (years later she'll tell herself she resents it, but she's never been good at lying) He gives her another name, too, on paper this time. One to use, one to keep. He trips over a loose stone in the street because he's too busy talking to a gaggle of fans, charm and sparkle and it's stupid, it's disgusting, but she's here, isn't she? She catches him before he can fall and doesn't let go. His bones aren't hollow but sometimes it feels like they should be. There is something at her very core, something rough and hardened and unpolished that says "I will always keep you safe". He forgets, sometimes --or maybe he doesn't-- to slip that thin mask of mortality back into place. In a lot of ways he's closer than she is except for the ways he isn't, will never be, will always remain other. In those moments she feels closer to him and further from him than she ever does. Changelings in the stories were children stolen away and replaced by a child too strange, too quiet, too focused, too sensative, too everything or not enough, maybe. Laerryn reads the stories and sees mirrors and mirrors reflecting back at her through history. Always too much or not enough. Changelings, both of them. Easier, she supposes, to blame the Fae. She certainly does every time they're out of milk.

Thoughts on Spy x Family: Family Portrait

I finally got around to reading the SxF light novel, Family Portrait...and I mean "finally" because it's literally been sitting in my shelf since it was first released in English back in December of last year! I was distracted by Code White and the SxF video game which came out around the same time, but even long after that, I was having trouble getting motivated to read it. For some reason, experiencing SxF in novel format instead of in anime/manga just didn't appeal to me, plus the fact that it's not written by Endo himself (these weird preferences of mine are also why I'm not into reading fanfics either). Don't get me wrong, in general I love reading stories in prose form too, but for a series like SxF that already has such an established visual identity, it doesn't feel as "authentic" to me if that makes any sense. But I did want to read it eventually, since it is an official part of SxF media and Endo did the illustrations and does acknowledge the book (he wrote a nice afterword at the end). So I finally sat down and read it in sections over the course of this week! I'll share my brief thoughts on each of the contained stories:

Novel Mission 1

Since this was the first story in the book, it took me a while to get used to experiencing the world of SxF in novel form. There were some things I felt would have been better conveyed in anime/manga, for example, one of the very first gags about Yor misinterpreting Anya's nature class as some sort of hardcore outdoor survival trip. As I was reading that part I was like "I get the joke, but it would have been funnier if I actually saw these images and the characters' expressions with Endo's comedic illustrations." It was also a bit jarring to hear the characters thoughts and feelings from third-person narration, but I got used to it. As for the story itself, it was Damianya focused, something I'm not particularly into, but I don't mind it either. I liked the rare, soft Damian moments, and the thing with the squirrel eating Anya's peanut trail was funny. I also liked the scene at the beginning where Loid and Yor feed Bond together while Anya watches.

Novel Mission 2

Oddly, this was my favorite of the stories! Of all the characters, I think the author nailed Yuri's unhinged thoughts the best - as I was reading, I couldn't help but hear every cringe thought in his voice, which is a good sign of how well the author gets the character! I actually chuckled at a few parts too, both from his insane Yor-obsessed and anti-Loid musings, as well as from his banter with Anya. The police interrogation scene was great and would be even better if it ever gets animated! I also found it interesting that this story has the first instance where we find out what Yuri thinks about Bond (that he's fat and useless - rude!) Also his first time hearing about Franky apparently...makes we wonder if Endo will make him feel the same way if these things ever come up in the manga.

Novel Mission 3

I liked this story a lot too! I think it worked the best in novel format out of all of them, probably because it was more focused on drama and emotions than comedy. It's ironic that the two official SxF stories that feature the deeper side of Franky's character - this one and the omake chapter from volume 13 - are both not even part of the main canon! Alessa would have definitely accepted Franky's job as an informant, but he felt that someone like her should only be surrounded by "beautiful things." The poor man really needs to see that inner beauty matters too, and he has that! I also think he should have swallowed his pride and told Loid the real reason why he wanted the disguise...not that it would have changed the outcome. Poor Franky.

Novel Mission 4

This was a cute Forger-focused story, but like the first one, I felt it had parts that would have been more effective in anime/manga form, for example, "hair monster" Yor and whatever hideous painting Felix ended up making! But despite that, it was still funny and cute. Though I do think the author went a tad overboard with Yor's flustered antics...they just kept going and going, lol. Also, like the movie, we have another scenario of Loid getting flung into the air by Yor but landing gracefully on his feet (though this instance was much tamer since she wasn't drunk and only pushed him instead of hit him). Again, maybe I would have appreciated the humor in this story better if I saw it in anime/manga with Endo's hilarious designs and expressions, but for what it was, it was enjoyable enough.

Short Novel

This extra short story would be perfect as a reintroduction story for a future anime season...maybe one day!

Overall, the Family Portrait novel is a nice addition to the Spy x Family universe. Even though I feel the humor in the series is most effective in illustrated form, it's still nice to have more stories in the canon, especially ones that show new sides to the characters, like the Franky and Yuri stories. Like the movie, it's debatable if this novel should be considered true canon or not, but personally, I don't find anything in it that contradicts canon, at least not yet. So yeah, definitely check out the novel if you haven't already! 😁

- RIN FELT SO BAD LEAVING YOU!!

- he literally thought of you everyday (god he feels so lukewarm right now)

- remember the phone privileges they could get during the first selection? probably uses it to text you because missed you so much

- undoubtedly tries to show off during the u-20 match to impress you (and sae)

- the day he goes to visit you happened to be the same day the blue lock boys hung out together

- the group catches him at the flower shop after their free dinner with the ex u-20 members

- reo probably has to hold bachira back from running up to greet rin

- ARYU KNOWS FLOWER LANGUAGE AND DECODED THE BOUQUET RIN GOT

- EVERYONE GASPED AT THE SAME TIME WHEN THEY HEARD THE MEANING OF THE BOUQUET

- it was roses and orchids to mean “i miss you” but in a romantic way ;)

- they all probably stood silent for a good minute and just watched rin in disbelief

- they stood that way until rin started to leave the flower shop

- “let’s go follow him!” was bachira’s wise idea

- and so they did.

- barou left. he didn’t want to be apart of stupid acts.

- chigiri’s and yukimiya’s curiosity were the only reasons why they stayed. no one knows why nagi stayed tbh he just continued following everyone though

- tokimitsu was dragged by bachira.

- the rest were actually curious and didn’t mind following him

- imagine this huge group trying to tail a guy while trying to be discreet about it

- they got a lot of weird looks.

- karasu kept smacking the back of bachira’s head to get him to shut up

- the only reason they didn’t get caught is because they were pretty far away from rin.

- anyways the hospital wasn’t far from the flower shop

- it’s a WONDER how they got past the person who checks people in

- probably said they were with “that guy” (they pointed at rin while he walked away to the room you were in)

- another wonder is how rin still hasn’t noticed them

- yk how u get stickers showing you got approved to go further into the hospital?

- if we’re being real and you could only have a certain amount of visitors (idk what the actual amount is help) they would send bachira and tokimitsu (they figured rin would go easy on them)

- rin, still oblivious to this all, made his way into your room

- rin says he never cries but he was about to when he saw your face light up in excitement (im about to cry too.)

- IMMEDIATELY engulfs you in a strong hug, his head burying itself in your neck as he inhaled your scent

- HE MISSED YOU SO SO SO MUCH

- if you’re crying he will wipe your tears with the softest look on his face

- awkwardly hands you the bouquet

- also awkward with his first words with you

- probably stares at you with the soft look while a, “hi,” leaves him

- you guys start your conversation while the rest of the blue lock boys finally find the room rin went to

- CHIGIRI SLAMMED A HAND OVER BACHIRA’S MOUTH TO SILENCE HIS GASP LMAO

- meanwhile otoya is thinking of how to rizz you up 💀

- they watched in silence for a good minute, bachira taking pictures to send to isagi later

- they wouldn’t even have gotten caught if it weren’t for the nurse who loudly asked if they needed something

- at that both you and rin look back at the door and just see all of them dumbly looking at the nurse

- they’re so stupid help me

- rin immediately goes red STEAM COMING OUT OF HIS EARS

- please put a hand on his arm. it’ll remind him not to go ballistic

- the nurse awkwardly walks off, noticing rin’s now scary demeanor

- cue the awkward laugh with them all scratching the back of their head from the group

- except for bachira. “hi, rin!” he excitedly waved at him then at you. wave back.

- “hey, you were the guys who played with rin in that match!”

- your excited tone was the only reason rin hadn’t started yelling yet.

- bachira took that as an invitation to just walk in and start talking with you

- he probably sits himself in between you and rin on the bed 💀

- otoya absolutely flirts with you during this time as well.

- THEY ALL LOVED YOU THOUGH!!

- just pray rin didn’t kill them all after they left…

The book ask has me thinking...

Pantalone, keeping records of funding. Like, how much he gave to who and what it was spent on. And then an entirely different book of records of him spending money and what for.

The formatting gives a date, a price, who it was for and what he bought. And a few pages in, the format changes. Date, what it was, who it was for.

And then it changes entirely to what it was and reader.

Page after page of just item and reader.

Scarf, reader.

Stuffed animal, reader.

Blanket, reader.

When the Traveller asks him why the prices disappeared he just says that it's to keep prying eyes from knowing too much. In reality, he got yelled at for spending too much money when Reader got their hands on it once.

It's also really unfortunate. Pantalone has black hair, glasses and gets shipped with Dottore.

I have black hair and glasses, where's my ship with Dottore? It's not fair.

I LOVE THIS. Pantalone who is meticulously organized (unlike a certain co-worker of his), making sure that the tiniest details are exact and up to date. With his work and all, it's essential that everything is neat and accurate, can't have forgotten debts or fraud, now can he? Anyone who needs to view it for business purposes can understand it easily. Unfortunately, they cannot view more... private matters anymore. (Or perhaps it's fortunate, because whenever regular employees see how much Lord Pantalone spends on his dear spouse, they tend to have sudden bouts of lightheadedness.)

It's sort of obvious to everyone how much the Harbinger spends on you, it's kind of a no-brainer to everyone that of course the richest man in Snezhnaya would have no issue with spoiling his lover, but it just quite never clicks until one actually see the records of his expenses for you. It just... boggles the mind and any normal person would need to sit down. If you think a few pages is bad, it's nothing really in the grand scheme of things because he's been keeping a record for all the years you've been together. And the funnier part is that he has all these luxurious purchases for you, and then really simple things next to them as well that you yourself requested. I imagine Pantalone likes to flip through the records every now and then and reminisce about certain purchases and your reaction to them.

Poor Paimon, her head is absolutely spinning from all the zeroes after zeroes in Pantalone's purchases. Traveler too - and they thought Childe was generous! They are only left to wonder the numbers for you though. And poor Pantalone as well - he left you unguarded for a few minutes and all of a sudden you've discovered his secrets... For a long time he's always been very good at dodging the conversation of price whenever he buys something for you, this time however, it seems his luck has run out. Needless to say even though you're pouty and ignoring him for a bit he quickly makes it up to you by cuddling you and promising to "cut back a bit" (never happened.)

At first he thought of downplaying the prices to appease you, but quickly removed that idea from his mind because of how much hassle and trouble it would probably end up creating. In the end he leaves your expenses blank in the main book, but has another side ledger solely dedicated to you. Thankfully, you have not found this one yet, and he plans to keep it that way. For the sake of both of your healths...

the cancellation of 'how i met your father' is actually a much greater loss for television than i'm sure most people are going to give it credit for.

for starters, this show marked a big part of bringing back longer-format sitcoms, where seasons lasted 24 episodes and the idea was to follow the characters through several years of their lives, marking major life milestones, etc. it leaned into the comedy, both physical and witty, and allowed its audience the pleasure of following an assorted group of random but very close friends through shenanigans. it had the simple joy of good old fun.

it also seemed like a great example of very casual but genuine representation & diversity. one thing i loved about the show was how there was poc representation & lgbtq+ representation, but that wasn't the only thing those characters were there for. sid was a south asian man, but it didn't define him - even without that he would've been a fleshed out and interesting character. ellen was an east asian lesbian, and the same applied for her. in fact, her journey of self-love was an important part of her story, and yet it was not at all related to either aspect of her identity. (i know they weren't the only examples, but you get it.)

minorities were allowed to exist as humans, without existing only as minorities, which is a box many shows put their characters in, and it was nice to see it done well for a change. yes, it could have had even more diversity, but the point very much still stands, including in the fact that we never saw sophie's son because he could have been any race (a welcomed progression from the characteristic 00s all-white himym cast).

i know lots of people gave the 1st season a shot and didn't come back for the 2nd, because they found it forced and cringey and various other things.

but in s2 the writing and characters found their feet - the jokes were funnier, the stories were more enjoyable, the characters were more lovable, and it was clear that with time the show had grown into itself.

and it's a shame, for himyf, its fans & the sitcom genre as a whole, that this show will never be allowed any more time, never be afforded the opportunity, to keep growing, and conclude all those stories they set up.
