We have a ton of books on our calendar for July, so I thought it would be fun to highlight a few that caught my eye. Are any of these on your TBR list?
All the Yellow Suns by Malavika Kannan
A coming-of-age story about a queer Indian American girl exploring activism and identity through art, perfect for fans of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Sixteen-year-old Maya Krishnan is fiercely protective of her friends, immigrant community, and single mother, but she knows better than to rock the boat in her conservative Florida suburb. Her classmate Juneau Zale is the polar opposite: she’s a wealthy white heartbreaker who won’t think twice before capsizing that boat. When Juneau invites Maya to join the Pugilists—a secret society of artists, vandals, and mischief-makers who fight for justice at their school—Maya descends into the world of change-making and resistance. Soon, she and Juneau forge a friendship that inspires Maya to confront the challenges in her own life. But as their relationship grows romantic, painful, and twisted, Maya begins to suspect that there’s a whole different person beneath Juneau’s painted-on facade. Now Maya must learn to speak her truth in this mysterious, mixed-up world—even if it results in heartbreak.
What a Desi Girl Wants Sabina Khan
The romance of Becky Albertalli meets the nuanced family dynamics of Darius the Great is Not Okay in this YA novel from acclaimed author Sabina Khan. Mehar hasn't been back to India since she and her mother moved away when she was only four. Hasn't visited her father, her grandmother, her family, or the home where she grew up. Why would she? Her father made it clear that she's not his priority when he chose not to come to the US with them. But when her father announces his engagement to socialite Naz, Mehar reluctantly agrees to return for the wedding. Maybe she and her father can heal their broken relationship. And after all, her father is Indian royalty, and his home is a palace--the wedding is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime affair. While her father still doesn't make the time for her, Mehar barely cares once she meets Sufiya, her grandmother's assistant, and one of the most grounded, thoughtful, kind people she's ever met! Though they come from totally different worlds, their friendship slowly starts to blossom into something more . . . Mehar thinks. Meanwhile, Mehar's dislike for Naz and her social media influencer daughter, Aleena, deepens. She can tell that the two of them are just using her father for his money. Mehar's starting to think that putting a stop to this wedding might be the best thing for everyone involved. But what happens when telling her father the truth about Naz and Aleena means putting her relationship with Sufiya at risk . . .
Firebird by Sunmi HarperCollins
Caroline Kim is feeling the weight of sophomore year. When she starts tutoring infamous senior Kimberly Park-Ocampo--a charismatic lesbian, friend to rich kids and punks alike--Caroline is flustered . . . but intrigued Their friendship kindles and before they know it, the two are sneaking out for late-night drives, bonding beneath the stars over music, dreams, and a shared desire of getting away from it all. A connection begins to smolder . . . but will feelings of guilt and the mounting pressure of life outside of these adventures extinguish their spark before it catches fire? -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads
A Guide to the Dark by Meriam Metoui Henry Holt
You can check out of Room 9, but you can never leave. The Haunting of Hill House meets Nina LaCour in this paranormal mystery YA about the ghosts we carry with us. Something is building, simmering just out of reach. The room is watching. But Mira and Layla don't know this yet. When the two best friends are stranded on their spring break college tour road trip, they find themselves at the Wildwood Motel, located in the middle of nowhere, Indiana. Mira can't shake the feeling that there is something wrong and rotten about their room. Inside, she's haunted by nightmares of her dead brother. When she wakes up, he's still there. Layla doesn't see him. Or notice anything suspicious about Room 9. The place may be a little run down, but it has a certain charm she can’t wait to capture on camera. If Layla is being honest, she’s too preoccupied with confusing feelings for Mira to see much else. But when they learn eight people died in that same room, they realize there must be a connection between the deaths and the unexplainable things that keep happening inside it. They just have to find the connection before Mira becomes the ninth.
Rana Joon and the One and Only Now by Shideh Etaat
This lyrical coming-of-age novel for fans of Darius the Great Is Not Okay and On the Come Up, set in southern California in 1996, follows a teen who wants to honor her deceased friend’s legacy by entering a rap contest. Perfect Iranian girls are straight A students, always polite, and grow up to marry respectable Iranian boys. But it’s the San Fernando Valley in 1996, and Rana Joon is far from perfect—she smokes weed and loves Tupac, and she has a secret: she likes girls. As if that weren’t enough, her best friend, Louie—the one who knew her secret and encouraged her to live in the moment—died almost a year ago, and she’s still having trouble processing her grief. To honor him, Rana enters the rap battle he dreamed of competing in, even though she’s terrified of public speaking. But the clock is ticking. With the battle getting closer every day, she can’t decide whether to use one of Louie’s pieces or her own poetry, her family is coming apart, and she might even be falling in love. To get herself to the stage and fulfill her promise before her senior year ends, Rana will have to learn to speak her truth and live in the one and only now.

Top 10 Favorite Character Essences
Thanks @author-a-holmes for the tag! This is a cool idea, looking for not only what characters I love but which ones add literary value based on their role in the story.
1. Xena from Xena: Warrior Princess
Ok, so admittedly she’s at the top partly because I’ve had a crush on her since I was 15, but that is largely because she falls into my favorite character archetype: she has a dark past that won’t leave her alone and a dark side she’s never fully able to get rid of despite learning to fight for good and protect the innocent and even forgive herself. And yet, she is loved unconditionally anyway for who she is.
Tumblr media
2. The Fool from the Farseer Trilogy and its sequel trilogies by Robin Hobb
He’s so mysterious, even he doesn’t know his full backstory. He’s a fascinating, contradictory character who doesn’t even have a real name, and yet he is a real friend when given a chance. He’s the type of person who can decorate a room in beautiful bright colors then never let anyone see it, who can be in love for years and never say anything, who would have a doll just to care for something. Yet his character, despite all its tragedy, doesn’t feel tragic because he doesn’t see himself that way. He’s wise enough to know that life goes on regardless of each person’s feelings or actions, but also that we will still feel and act.
Tumblr media
3. Death of the Endless from Sandman (comics and show)
I love that she performs an expected role in an unexpected way. The Sandman universe is full of violence and danger and things out to get you, and somehow actual, literal Death is not one of those things. She’s kind and gentle, and has a real love for humanity and all the life that comes before her job. Her role is necessary and nothing to be afraid of. I also love how she’s reassuring to people But understandably a bit snarky to her brother because that’s just how siblings are.
Tumblr media
4. Sister Boniface from Sister Boniface Mysteries
What’s not to love? She’s a nun. She’s a scientist. She solves mysteries. She makes inappropriate puns about death. She’s always upbeat and funny, even when it’s below the dignity of a nun, and often gets herself in trouble, but she’s also kind and determined and genuinely pious. She just wants to experiment in her lab and never accepts no from people who think she shouldn’t.
Tumblr media
5. Sidra from A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
Sidra was a ship’s AI, sentient but not legally a person. Her original name was Lovelace, Lovey for short, and she was in love with a human so they planned to put her in an illegal body that would let her pass for human and allow them to live together. However, an accident reset her and made her lose her memory and all her character development on the ship. Remaining was too painful for everyone, so she used the body and went to live with some of the crew’s friends.
The thing is, Sidra simultaneously knows a lot about humanity from her former programming and ability to space-google things, but doesn’t know anything about being a person, much less what she wants to do and who she wants to be. So she has to go on a journey of discovery starting from basically zero and learn both who she is and what values she cares about.
Tumblr media
6. Caroline Gill from The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards
This is actually one of my favorite books ever and I must have read it like 10 times by now. The premise is that in a snowstorm in the 60’s a doctor is forced to deliver his own twins with only a nurse to assist. When he discovers his daughter has Down syndrome, to spare his wife the pain of her dying young, he sends the nurse to take her to an asylum and tells his wife the baby died. The nurse, Caroline, can’t leave a child in such a horrible place and instead runs away to raise her. The story follows all of them over the next 20 years and how that one decision ripples through each of their lives.
I like Caroline specifically because she’s so ordinary. She’s just a regular person whose dreams have not come true, but thrown into an impossible situation she chooses compassion and becomes as strong as she needs to in order to be there for her adopted daughter (who does not die young), whether that’s fighting for accommodations or recognizing her agency as she grows up. That decision not only gives her a family, but leads her to finding love and friendship and a home she’d always longed for in a way she never would have imagined.
Tumblr media
7. Root from Person of Interest
Based purely on her attributes on paper, she should be a flat and boring character but she’s actually the best thing about this show. She willingly gave up her free will to do the bidding of the omniscient AI she sees as a god. She doesn’t require any context or explanation before following The Machine’s orders, but also she (The Machine has a gender that only Root acknowledges) taught her morality, when it’s not ok to kill, and that she should act in the best interests of humanity rather than do whatever seems fun in the moment. That’s the other thing, though. She has fun listening to The Machine, fighting bad guys, and being part of the bigger picture. She enjoys it all too much for anyone else’s comfort, but it makes for a fascinating character.
Tumblr media
8. King Ezran from The Dragon Prince
Ok I have so many Feelings about this show in general and all its characters, but I feel like Ezran as a ruler is revolutionary. His father was a good king who made sacrifices to protect his kingdom and people, even at the expense of others, and Ezran just refuses to do that. Despite being very young, he is perfectly aware of the stakes and responsibility involved in ruling, and always tries to take care of his people, but he refuses to do it by throwing others under the bus. He understands that even their enemies have suffered much as they have and he always, always chooses kindness, even when he or his kingdom is being actively threatened. He looks for why someone would do something bad when hurt and scared and wants to fix the underlying problem, even when the adults around him say violence is the only answer.
Tumblr media
9. Lying Cat from the Saga comics by Brian Vaughan & Fiona Staples
Lying Cat has no business being in this story, amazing though it is. It’s a story of love and tragedy, but she’s funny. Her species’ deal is that they can tell when a person isn’t telling the truth and announce that by saying, “Lying.” She’s not only there for comic relief, though. She is loyal and fierce and has her own agency—though she spends most of it as the sidekick to a bounty hunter who adores her, she later chooses who she would rather be companions with. It’s a different, weird concept that actually really works and adds some lightness and a different kind of love to the story.
Tumblr media
10. Antimony “Annie” Carver from Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell
Much like Ezran, she’s just so kind all the time, especially to those who need or deserve it, regardless of the politics of the adults around her. She loses a lot and faces a lot of tough choices as basically the only person who belongs to the technology of the court and the magic of the forest across the ravine, but she always asks someone how she can help even when they’re being cruel or scary or actively wanting to threaten her. All that said, she’s still very strong and can stand up to bullies and put them in their place as needed. She’s also not a flatly kind character and struggles with trauma and friendship and loss. And although she’s very loyal to people who show her kindness, she has no qualms about breaking rules that are cruel or just unnecessary.

When I'm not reading fanfiction, I'm reading published novels. Many by Becky Albertalli, who most probably know as the author of Simon and the Homosapiens Agenda (more colloquially know by its adapted film title Love, Simon). Just recently, she published another book- Imogen, Obviously. If you've ever wondered what it's like to suffer from comphet here's you're way to experience it. Ever struggled with feeling as if the queer community doesn't accept you? Here you go. Ever wondered what that "aha" moment of realizing your gay is like? Especially for those of us who didn't catch on watching Shigo and Kim Possible fight, or from Princess Bubblegum and Marcelene being girlfriends, or liking Bella better alone than with Edward or Jacob.
Reading this was like seeing my own story from the outside.

On January 11, 2018, it was announced that Jeon would be re-debuting in Cube Entertainment's new girl group (G)I-dle, as a rapper and its leader. She was credited in writing the lyrics, music, and arrangement for both their debut song "Latata" and their next single "Hann," both of which were well received and commercially successful. She also helped write five songs from (G)I-dle's debut extended play I Am. On August 8, 2018, it was announced that Jeon would participate in a girl group project called Station Young for SM Station's X 0 alongside Red Velvet's Seulgi, Kim Chung-ha, and GFriend's SinB. Station Young released their first song, "Wow Thing," on September 28, 2018.
After their debut, Jeon and fellow (G)I-dle member Miyeon were approached by Riot Games to collaborate with American artists Jaira Burns and Madison Beer as part of the virtual girl group K/DA for the multiplayer online battle arena video game League of Legends. K/DA officially debuted with the song "Pop/Stars" during the 2018 League of Legends World Championship on November 3. The official music video for "Pop/Stars" was released on the same day, reaching 30 million views on YouTube in five days and 100 million in one month. The single release of the song reached number one on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart. The K/DA incarnation of the character Akali, whose vocals were performed by Jeon, proved to be especially popular, becoming a frequent subject of fan art and cosplay.
In 2019, Jeon took on the role of composer for CLC's "No," a selection made through a blind test, serving as the lead single for the group's EP No.1. In March of the same year, Jeon publicly apologized for using a pirated version of the German music-producing software Kontakt. She expressed regret on her online fan community site, acknowledging her use of the illegal copy during her early days of learning songwriting. Jeon clarified that she had unintentionally retained the program but assured that, since fully dedicating herself to composing, she had exclusively used authorized software. The apology followed the revelation in a behind-the-scenes YouTube video for the I Made EP, produced by the agency, where icons of the illegally copied software were visible on her laptop screen. The agency promptly removed the video and issued an apology.
Jeon reprised her role as Akali in the League of Legends collaborative hip hop group True Damage. Collaborating with Becky G, Keke Palmer, Thutmose, and Duckwrth, they released a single titled "Giants" along with an animated music video on November 10, 2019. The track, predominantly in English, includes verses in Spanish and Korean. On the same day, the group performed at the 2019 League of Legends World Championship finals in Paris, France, marking Jeon's second consecutive year participating in the opening ceremony of the World Championship finals. "Giants" debuted at number fifteen and nineteen on Billboard's Rap and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs Sales charts, respectively.

by Susan Kaye Quinn
Genre:  sci-fi, near-future, hope-punk, social change, cultural change
The Dust Cover Copy
When the world is drowning, diplomacy is more than handshakes and headlines.
Nitara Desai has spent her life negotiating international agreements, easing points of conflict, and averting disasters. Worst-case scenarios belong in her nightmares, not the IEC’s daily reports. On a calm day, being a director at the International Energy Consortium only requires fixing CarbonCon translators for flustered Brazilian delegates. A thankless job, but the world is still drowning in CO2—there’s no choice but to keep treading.
On a bad day, it’s not just the Brazilians acting up, but the Americans walking out, and now the Governor of Southern California insisting on a clandestine meeting. Then a text comes from Matti, her solid rock in the stormy seas: Guess what? We’re getting married!
Suddenly, an earthquake is slow-rolling through her personal life as well.
She waited too long: to tell Matti how she feels, to quit the unwinnable race to net zero, to grab hold of the things that make life worth living, not just trying to stay afloat. When the governor reveals an impossible technology that could save the planet, but it’s in the hands of a murderously ambitious man, it’s a catastrophe she can’t turn away from. And it’s almost enough to distract her from everything falling apart. Work first, always.
And maybe that’s been the problem all along.
Yet You Cry When It Hurts is the fourth of four tightly-connected hopepunk novels in a near-future climate-fiction series. It’s about our future, how the forces of greed are ever-present, how the fight for a just world never ends, and how it’s not strongmen who will save us but the bright cords of connection that hold the world together.
If you enjoyed the optimistic climate solutions in Kim Stanley Robinson’s Ministry for the Future or the cozy cooperative future in Becky Chambers’ Monk and Robot series, you will enjoy Nothing is Promised.

Worldbuilding
Happy sigh
Oh, I love it when a series wraps up well.
In each book of this series, the intertwined threads of lives involved have grown the fabric of this world into a lovely tapestry. Now the fabric’s complete, and the tapestry of resolve, insistence on a better future and radical cooperation is beautiful. Quinn’s work in showing a world where we finally see unbridled ambition, racial superiority, and jingoism for what they are—poisons in our collective bloodstream that need to be counteracted—is something to see. And the fact that the author has pulled it off while telling a fun adventure story makes it that much better. In this final book of the series, all the threads are pulled together and tied off, wrapping up the plotline in a delightfully satisfying way.

Characterization
Though main characters from each of the other books will make their appearances in this installment, the work revolves around Nitara Desai: consummate diplomat. Devoted friend. Implacable opponent. She is the perfect character to carry the narrative thread to completion. Quinn keeps that quintessential balance of intimate and public plot points that have characterized the story, reminding us that the characters (like us) are whole people, and that a dire national event isn’t more important than a personal struggle: it’s just more public.
Arrayed against Nitara and her tight-knit team are characters who embody the devils of our human nature: the greed, the self-absorption, the arrogance and the shortsightedness that has held us back for generations. They are written well enough that, as you read the dialogue, you think ‘man, I’ve heard stuff like that on the news’. And then you shiver.
Writing Style
Tumblr media
Smoothed out since the first book, the style canters along at a beautifully smooth clip, pulling readers along for a race for something truly incredible, and leaving you with bright eyes and a smile at the finish line.
The Moves

Plot
With incredible scientific wonders, dastardly plots designed to jumpstart techno-feudalism, political disaster and murderous weather right around the corner, this energetic plotline rolls along at a perfect clip without losing sight of its characters’ humanity.

Sixteen Timeless Saint Laurent Bags To Invest In This Season
On the other side of issues, Betty Catroux was refined, and her style was androgynous and mysterious. She modeled for the label regularly, embodying the allure of Le Smoking Suit to a tee. While purses as a class might never garner a keen fancy of the founder, Yves Saint Laurent, who was more thinking about jewelry, the narrative has astoundingly changed over the last decade. With mavericks like Hedi Slimane and Anthony Vaccarello, YSL bags have gained a cult status within the style world. Iconic, luxurious, and designed with modern sophistication, YSL baggage are worthy investments and a mainstay of any fashionista’s wardrobe. wikipedia handbags Celebs, trend bloggers, and girls of all ages are loving leopard print luggage greater than ever. Here are just some of my favourite YSL purses in leopard print. Saint Laurent’s bucket bag silhouette can be closed with two drawstrings and has a chain shoulder strap. Saint Laurent was influenced by a variety of folks, places, and things over years that shaped the model identification of his fashion house. Founded in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent was the first couture house to introduce the concept of luxurious ready-to-wear with the label’s 1966 ‘Saint Laurent Rive Gauche’ womenswear collection. The French house’s debut prêt-a-porter line set a regular of youth and freedom that represented a critical first step in the modernization of style and irrevocably reworked the socio-cultural landscape. The label’s up to date iteration, Saint Laurent, now beneath the artistic path of Anthony Vaccarello since April 2016, upholds its founder’s legacy of absolute modernity and trend authority. Designed by Anthony Vaccarello in 2017, it's a modern day-to-night bag emblazoned with recognizable YSL hardware on the front flap. Saint Laurent was previously branded as ‘Yves Saint Laurent’, and while lots of the baggage still carry the ‘YSL’ brand, the name was modified in 2012. The high fashion division of the brand closed in 2002. Since Yves Saint Laurent’s retirement in 2002 at age 65, some of the world’s most iconic designers have worked at the luxury label, including Tom Ford. Duffle is a full on leather genius design with clever and oh-so fairly golden details for a retro-meets-uber-modern look. LouLou de la Falaise, Yves Saint Laurent’s shut friend and muse for more than three decades, the LouLou is certainly one of the most beloved baggage in Saint Laurent’s arsenal. Its hallmarks are its soft however boxy construction, entrance flap closure, and quilted chevron end. The model brings collectively classic designs and modern tendencies to create purses that might be at home in any woman’s wardrobe. The ‘Uptown’ tote bag options Saint Laurent’s signature envelope clutch on the entrance with a functioning pocket and magnetic snap closure, making it ideal to store your essentials. It also options an edgy chain-link strap, a foldover flap, and a tonal YSL emblem on the front. The white leather Becky, accented with silver-tone hardware instead of gold, adds an icy touch to a fall/winter wardrobe. Better still, you probably can proceed the tiny-bag trend with the mini Becky crossbody bag which, just like the Lou, has a more camera-like shape. This bag is a favorite amongst fashion bloggers and celebrities, including Miranda Kerr, Hailey Baldwin, Kendall Jenner, and Kim Kardashian. The holdup occurred despite the fact that the store retains its entrance doorways locked and security lets prospects in one at a time. "Then several different suspects entered the store and did their deed. They got here in to steal the shop merchandise, all as one group," Rueca stated. "A male suspect entered the store and struck the victim," said Officer Robert Rueca, a San Francisco Police Department spokesman. The most up-to-date case started when the shop's security guard was attacked a little after 5 p.m. phoenet.tw saint laurent replica The Yves Saint Laurent store at San Francisco's Union Square has been hit by robbers 3 times over the past month. This bag is on the market in lambskin which is a extra delicate leather, and one thing to remember when trying on the College tote. The again of the bag includes a flat pocket that can be used for holding your cellphone or something you to grab shortly. The price of Saint Laurent luggage, like all luxury gadgets, are topic to regular worth increases. Special details embody a hid padlock on a removable lanyard, and a useful keychain connected to the interior. The simple Lou bag is every minimalist fashionista’s finest good friend. Modeled after a camera bag, the Lou has a gentle yet boxy construction, plus sensible details like an exposed zipper fastening and adjustable shoulder strap. As a nod to the LouLou, this bag mostly features a chevron-quilted upper. The Lou has been introduced in almost each colorway imaginable through the years.

Chapter 1
YOU ARE NOT WELCOME.
Those are the exact words that greet me when I walk up our porch to our front door. Let’s just say that my mom has a special way of welcoming her quests. I step over the slightly offensive doormat to get inside. Not a lot of people would expect this kind of welcome from the mayor, but then again: no one expected her to win the elections in our town Starfall Fields in the first way.
Not to be mean, but even I never believed in my mom and not for a second did I think she had any chance of winning. Mom has been quite the controversy the second she moved into town. How on earth would she be able to be the mayor?
Weirdly enough, she hasn’t made a complete fool out of herself in these two months she has been mayor. Actually, she’s been doing quite well. It’s just that her housekeeping skills have been lower than low.
I open the refrigerator and scrunch up my nose when I notice there is barely anything edible in here. Great.
I grab my phone and send my mom a text.
Josie: You need to do groceries
Mom: Do it yourself, you lazy bitch
Mom: Still love you though 😘
I chuckle as I read her text. She’s quite something, my mom, and if we don’t call each other bitch at least once a day, there’s something up and we should worry.
People might find it odd that we call one another bitch, but it’s just our way of showing our affection towards the other.
Somehow I find some left over yogurt that isn’t expired already. I peel a banana (to only throw half of it away, because it’s brown and squishy, therefore absolutely repulsive) and cut it into slices. I drizzle some maple syrup on top of it and want to add some raisins, but when I open the jar, I find out there is only one raisin left in it.
‘Mom,’ I whine, though she can’t hear me. ‘Really?’ This is just absolutely fantastic. After a long day at school, a girl can barely enjoy a nice little afternoon snack. I grab my bowl and walk over to the dining table. My butt barely touched the soft seating of the chair, when my best friend Andy FaceTimes me. I place the phone against the fruit bowl before I press answer. ‘What do you want?’ I ask him. ‘You literally saw me half an hour ago.’
He smiles, two dimples appearing in his full cheeks. ‘You know I can’t get enough of you, sugar.’
Andy and I have been best friends since I can remember, but that is mostly because we’ve been in the same class the moment we both stepped foot into kindergarten and we’re neighbors. We’re literally the two houses in a radius of around half a mile (yes, we took the time to measure it) and he isn’t the worst guy to hang around with.
Okay, he is the only one that doesn’t make me that angry, I have to fight the urge to claw his eyes out. I’m not gonna beat around the bush: I love hanging out with him.
While we see each other the moment we step out of our houses to go to school, share every class of the day with one another and we walk from school back to our houses, it’s hard to function without the other one. Therefore, we usually FaceTime the second we can after separating.
We’re quite the symbiotic pair.
‘Spit it out, Andy. What do you want?’ I ask.
‘I was wondering what your plans are,’ Andy says. ‘Mainly for tonight.’
I can’t help but chuckle. ‘There was a plan of me hanging on the couch, watching a movie with my best friend while we eat junk food, but your voice is telling me that you have something else in mind for the two of us.’
He nods. ‘I was thinking about you and I doing some FindUrPricing tonight.’
‘FindUrPricing is not a word, you idiot.’
‘I don’t care, miss Doyle,’ he retorts with a sassy undertone. He shakes his head, gestures I have to wait (like I’m going anywhere) and comes back into frame, this time with a tablet in his hands. ‘I have like five of these things, so what do you say? Want to bury them tonight, while we try to find something cool for it in return?’
Andy has this obsession with solving puzzles in newspapers like the old soul he is and since he is quite good and really fast, he has won multiple prizes, including multiple tablets.
‘Only if I find a diamond ring,’ I answer with my mouth full of yogurt.
‘Yeah, that’s attractive. You’ll find yourself a boyfriend in no time with those manners.’
I show him the finger. ‘I don’t need etiquette lessons from you,’ I say.
Andy sticks out his tongue. ‘Are you coming with me tonight?’ he asks me. ‘You know I need you.’
I chuckle. Andy is a disaster when it comes to being in the dark, but since FindUrPrice is just more fun at night, I have become his personal guard. ‘Okay, okay, but only if I can sleep at your place tonight. I have no idea what time my mom will be back from work.’
Andy’s parents are going to the opera’s tonight and afterwards, they’re staying in a hotel near the big city. Normally, they aren’t the type of people to go to the opera’s, but when their son wins tickets, including a stay in one of the most luxurious hotels in the area, who are they to say no?
Since I have no idea what time my mom manages to pull herself from city hall (to say she is a workaholic is an understatement), I’d rather sleep at Andy’s, then telling her we’ve been wandering on the street late at night.
Especially on a school night.
Sure, my mom knows about FindUrPrice, but she forbade me to ever do it late at night, because “you never know what can happen”. I personally think it’s not that big of a deal, since Starfall Fields is boring as hell and absolutely harmless, but my mother wouldn’t be my mother if she didn’t envision my death.
FindUrPrice is an app for the younger folks in our city and the few around. The organization hid a few gifts and presents and whenever you follow the leads and find something, you have to place something nice in return. It’s cute and me and Andy do it from time to time.
‘You’re coming over now?’ Andy asks.
‘To help you do your laundry?’ I ask, nodding towards the screen, mainly towards the enormous pile of clothes on his bed. ‘Didn’t think so. See you in a few hours, Andy.’
‘Please,’ he begs, right at the same time as I hear his mom in the background yelling for him. ‘Yes, wait a minute!’ he yells. ‘Can I live with you? I feel like your mother never pushes you to do chores around the house.’
‘That’s because I do them voluntarily. If mom doesn’t do laundry, no one does it. If mom doesn’t clean the toilet, no one does it. Believe me, with a mom who all of the sudden turns a bit blind when it comes house chores, there is more to do here than there is at your place. Don’t you dare whine about it, Andrew Carter.’
We hang up and I grab a magazine from the table, reading through some of the articles. How to painlessly bikini wax yourself, how to get rid of strawberry legs, how to get yourself a man in a week.
Geez, mom, why do you read this?
No wait, better question: mom, why haven’t you gotten yourself a man in a week? This issue is three months old.
My phone rings again and without looking I answer, since I know exactly who is calling me. ‘Andy, I’m not helping you with your laundry,’ I say. ‘Shirts, sweaters and other items for your upper body go on a hanger and the rest with clothespins on a drying rack. How many times do I have to tell you that?’
‘Thank you for this wise, yet unnecessary lesson in laundry,’ mom says and I can hear her smile in her voice. ‘But laundry is your chore, so I pretend I didn’t hear it.’
‘What do you want?’ I ask my mom.
‘Wanted to know your plans for tonight.’
‘I was planning on hanging out with Andy,’ I say. Go outside, do some FindUrPricing. ‘Watch a movie. Probably sleep at his place. He is home alone, you know how he gets.’
Mom snorts. ‘Oh, do I know. How old was he when he rang our doorbell, nearly crying because he was afraid of the dark?’
‘The last time was a few months ago,’ I chuckle. ‘Why do you want to know my plans for tonight?’
‘You know,’ mom starts and I do know. ‘There is still a lot to do here at city hall.’
‘Right,’ I say, ‘and you wanted to know whether or not I mind. Mom, I’m your daughter, I truly don’t care.’
‘I’ll make it up to you,’ she says, mostly because she is trying to feel less guilty.
And I wouldn’t be her daughter if I wasn’t going to totally exploit her sweet offer. ‘So, you’re making breakfast for me and Andy tomorrow?’
She sighs. ‘Goodness gracious, really? I’m going to pull an all nighter.’
‘You wanted to be mayor and you’re also a mother. Deal with it.’
Mom scoffs. ‘And here I was thinking I was gonna get some sympathy from my daughter.’
‘Ew never,’ I say.
‘Well, I might just make breakfast for you, only if you eat it here. I might be your chef, but I’m not a waiter and I’m certainly not gonna walk it to the Carters.’
I scoff. ‘Okay, I think I can live with that.’
‘Alright, enjoy your night, Josie and don’t make it too late okay? Ten o’clock lights out, okay?’
No. ‘Of course. Bye mom.’
I look at the picture on the dining table. Despite not being blood related, my mom and I are really close. According to Andy’s mom, it never seemed like my mom would settle down. She moved to this boring place a few years prior to finding me on her doorstep. She was thirty and didn’t have a husband (nor had any intention of settling down with anyone—she turned down a lot of men who asked her out in Starfall Fields). Even back then, she was already a workaholic and worked over time as the mayor’s assistant.
One day, when she was getting herself ready for work, she heard soft cries from her front porch and when she checked it out, there was yours truly.
I was around a year old and in the cradle, there was a note saying that whoever found me, to take good care of me. My DNA wasn’t available in any database, just like there were no matches at all.
I have no idea who I am, who my biological family is and where I’m from.
Mom adopted me, because I only felt safe with her and since that moment, we were a duo.
A year and a half ago she became the mayor and since then she is everywhere in Starfall Fields, except home. I barely see her, but she does a lot for this town and I don’t think I have the right to whine about it, especially because it means many many sleepovers with Andy and many nights wandering around the woods to play FindUrPrice.
Sure, I miss her from time to time, because she’s still my mom. From someone who was home a lot, would wait for me on the porch no matter the weather when I came back from school and had chocolate pie ready for me and Andy, she changed to a real career woman who is everywhere in town.
But that’s okay, she’s happy and when she is, I am too. I should be, especially after everything she has done for me.

On benevolent whites interacting with semi-brown media
This is gonna be long, but I’ma break it up into lil chunks cause my brain can’t deal with big paragraphs.
Now, I am not in a lot of fandoms. I have had media hyperfixations for a very long time and i tried being in fandom once or twice, but it never felt right. So me, in simple terms, I’m mexican, african american, bi, nonbinary and neurodivergent. In my terms, I’m a detribalized purepecha, blackfoot, black, fuck-gender, colonial-called-crazy kid.
And fandom is mostly white.
I decided as a college junior to limit my white media consumption to 10 per year (which faltered a bit in the pandemic) because white media bores me. I’ve never really found anyone like me in movies or shows or books until Trini in the 2017 power rangers.
And this was probably where I started to notice it. At this point, I was in Honolulu, getting my masters in creative writing and learning more about colonialism and decolonization. And I noticed that the queer white authors did some weird stuff in the trimberly fics.
At the begining people would use “the latina” as a narritive epithet for Trini, while never calling Kim “the indian” cause I guess they had some sense. They’d also use this weird spanish for Trini dispite the fact that she and no one in her family ever spoke spanish in the movie. They also could never get her character quite right, and that is for a simple reason.
Becky G is mexican, Trini is mexican, both are born in the US and that is a tricky nuance for white people to understand becuase they don’t spend enough time around chicanxs (latines don’t get on my ass for this, I use x in english and e in spanish).
All this to say that one cannot remove a character from their culture.
And this all repeated with Luz Noceda and now Encanto. They inserted Luz into Miguel’s role in Coco (being Dominican and Mexican are not the same). Encanto is being analyzed by white people with no regard for its history. And don’t even get me started on the white washing fanart of all of these.
I was actually regularly “yelled” at for telling people to color Trini darker.
But Encanto has hit really hard lately. Because I don’t even want to watch it. I don’t want to see characters who are culturally adjacent to me get stripped down for queer white consumption.
But of course I’m on tumblr and it finds its way to me. And I saw someone analyzing Encanto in one of the most frustrating ways possible. With zero context.
If you love Encanto and don’t know who Gabriel Garcia Marquez is then what the actual fuck are you doing? Isabel Allende? Anna Marie McLemore?
I did not sit through an entire year of IB English listening to people misunderstand GGM and IsaAll for yall to continue doing the same shit.
All of my friends know to never mention magical realism to me unless they want me to go on a huge ass rant. I’ll condense it. I don’t think MR is a literary technique, I think it’s a cultural aspect. Classic MR comes from South America for a very specific reason: Spanish Colonialism.
Spanish colonialism is somewhat different in its tactics, because they decided to paint over the indigenous religions with catholicism. And in that way the spiritual practices are always kinda rubbing against one another. You see this also in the caste system of latin america. And that’s why when people ask me what religion I am I say, I’m culturally catholic, but I hate it. And then if they ask me if I believe in ghosts, I’m like duh, I’m mexican.
GGM is also Columbian. Just like Encanto. So why don’t queer white people go researching Columbia and its original people? What gives white people the audacity to think that they can just de-contextualize something from a culture they may not have even thought of and make proclamations about it? And I know the answer and if you know the answer, I’m sorry friend, and if you don’t: figure it out, cause I’m not gonna tell you.
Sigh. Like I don’t even wanna read fics anymore. That used to be one of my favorite things. And now it’s the same bullshit over and over. Yall ruin everything.
Go educate yourselves and leave my brown kids alone

I read some amazing books in August, but I was in a weird mood for most of it. So at the beginning of this month, I gave myself a break to rethink my priorities. I think I've been facing reading as a daily chore, and with all the other things in my life, I feel tired. I'm working through a way to be here on Tumblr (that makes me want to read more and more) and my enjoyment for reading.
Anyway, talking about all the books I read in August under the cut!
In reading order:
Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden
It's a super interesting thriller set in an Indian reservation and dealing with violence, drugs, corruption, and what justice means. I liked all the twists of the story, although the pacing felt a little bit off in the middle.
Read if you want: short thrillers, vigilante stories.
The Ancestors by Tananarive Due, Brandon Massey and L.A Banks
There are three novellas in this book, and I enjoyed Tananarives's story about ghosts and ancestors. It was spooky and tense, and it lived up to my expectations. Brandon Massey's one had cool elements, but it never really got suspenseful. And L. A Banks's story was not for me.
Felix After Ever by Kacen Callender (x) (x)
I loved this book so much! It deals with painful topics, but the problems and teenagers are so realistic! I laughed, got mad, and cried, and it made me feel so many things and go back to my teenage years. In the end, this is a beautiful story with a message about loving yourself, being open to constantly discover more about yourself, and accepting that we deserve love, an easy and comfortable love.
Read if you want: realistic ya, trans characters, characters questioning their identity, ya about art.
Championess by Tarun Shanker, Kelly Zekas and Amanda Perez Puentes
It's a fun and short graphic novel! See my review here.
Read if you want: historical fiction with non-white protagonists, women challenging gender norms, action graphic novels.
In Deeper Waters by F. T. Lukens
I don't usually go for romance with fantasy, but the blurb mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean, and I got excited! I thought the prince was a bit annoying and naive, but Athlen's story is cool. The resolution of the problem at the end was a bit off for me, but at least it was a happy ending.
Read if you want: lighthearted romance with fantasy.
The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This story, unfortunately, fell flat for me. I didn't care for the characters and the magical aspect of it was so underused! I kept listening to the audiobook waiting for some interesting turn of events, but it never happened.
Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin
This book was so good!!! I think I loved the family aspects of it the most and the sense of community. I loved how family stories and secrets are a theme throughout the book! And Hana is such a lovely character, and I cheered for her all the time! I'm soft for stories with podcats, and I loved that she works in the radio industry!
Read if you want: family secrets and stories, enemy to lovers, stories dealing with food, podcast and radio shows.
When Tara met Farah by Tara Pammi
It also fell flat for me. It started with some embarrassing scenes, but at least I was laughing. But it became too cheesy, and the writing was not that good. I was excited about the cultural aspects, and although there are some entertaining themes regarding that, I had to push through the second half of it.
Sadie by Courtney Summers
This book is devastating! It touches on some heavy topics, like abuse, pedophilia, and rape. I knew from the beginning that there'd be some kind of abuse, but all the indications leading to the final revelation shocked me. I liked the structure of the narration, changing from the podcast to Sadie's narration. I loved Sadie as a character. Also, I liked the commentary about how this is a common and overseen story. It's a sad book but beautifully written.
Read if you want: ya thrillers, revenge stories.
The Summer of You by Nagisa Furuya
Read my review here.
The Last Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim
It was an emotional and very slow-paced story. It deals with complicated feelings, family relationships, mother and daughter dynamics, immigrant life, and family secrets.
Read if you want: family secrets, complicated family dynamics, immigrant stories.
Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson
This book wrecked me emotionally. It deals with an abusive relationship and the dark side of the music industry. It's the second book by Tiffany D. Jackson that left me devastated, and she's becoming one of my favorite authors. Read the trigger warnings if you're interested.
Read if you want: the dark side of the music industry, ya thrillers/mysteries.
Now Entering Addamsville by Francesca Zappia
I chose to read this book because of the ace mc and the spooky vibes, and I liked Zora a lot. I don't know what exactly I didn't enjoy about the story, but I didn't care much for the other characters or the mystery.
Re-read:
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (x) (x) (x)
Disponíveis em Português (links para os meus reviews no skoob):
O Mar me Levou a Você de Pedro Rhuas (x)
Quem Matou Capitão Gancho? de Anna Anchieta (x)
A Mariana Errada de Julia Braga (x)
And feel free to talk to me about the books of this list :)
Read in: Feb | Mar | Apr | May | June | July
