Iain Glen in HENRY IV, part 1: in 3 hours 50 minutes, and counting...

On BBC Radio 3, Sunday April 26, 19H30 UK time (available to all on the BBC’s website if you listen to the play live)

Yesterday, in my teaser interview with @pnienor, our resident Bard expert singled out a specific scene in which the King stands out: “...the exchange with Hal in Act 3, scene 2, I think, is where you find out just how good he is at keeping his crown and why. You want Hal to emulate him after this and he does.” ... Sooooo wanting to investigate this a bit further, I went into the text which will enable Iain Glen to shine and, lo and behold, I found yet more meta-theatrical resonances to enjoy!

During Henry’s lengthy (!!) impassioned address to his son, at one point he explains how he won the admiration of his people through modesty. While the previous King pranced around like some red carpet hungry star (my image ;-), his shying away from the public eye made his rare appearances all the more glorious and commanded respect.

If I had been so publicly visible, so overly familiar to people, so freely accessible, so cheap and available to the common hordes, then public opinion (which helped me get the crown) would have stayed loyal to King Richard. Wonder Woman: Earth One, Vol 2 - Part 1

I’m going to break this into a few parts, because it turned out I had a bit to say. I’ll start with my overall impressions, then dive into the spoilery recap.

General thoughts: Next verse, same as the first.

Grant Morrison purports to want to explore Marston’s ideas, but he’s more interested in the kooky, kinky trappings than the sentiment behind them.

Marston was radical and progressive in his time. Writing in the 1940s, he told his readers that women were men’s equals — and even superiors! — in every way. He told young girls there was no limit to what they could do. His stories promoted love over hatred, peace over violence, rehabilitation over retribution.

If Morrison had taken that bold sentiment and reimagined it through a lens of modern society and feminism in 2018, he might have had a compelling story to tell. Instead, he takes Marston’s ideas as he understands them and transplants them wholesale into a time in which they’re no longer radical and progressive, but rather backward and out-of-step with modern intersectional feminism, and then proceeds to ask such deep, incisive questions as “yes but realistically could we actually replace all world governments with a matriarchy?????”

He never truly deconstructs any of Marston’s ideas, just parrots phrases like “submission to loving authority” a lot and raises questions without ever making a decent attempt at answering them. To be fair, part of the problem is that he’s simply trying to do too much at once: juggling parallel stories in Themyscira and Man’s World, an interrogation of the Amazons’ philosophies and the introduction of three new antagonists and the tensions they cause, all within a limited page count, Morrison is unable to devote the necessary time to properly developing any of them. It’s no wonder the result is so half-baked.

But hey, just throw in a bunch of vagina planes and a dusting of kink and watch as everyone crows over how subversive he is.

Yannick Paquette’s artwork is still beautiful. His page layouts are still dynamic and expressive, and his character designs are still lovely. Diana in particular gets a variety of very cool outfits, including a beautiful modest costume for a trip to the Middle East.

But he still can’t shake his tendency towards drawing women’s bodies in weirdly-contorted poses with bizarre pornfaces. Wonder Woman shouldn’t look like she’s orgasming as she’s leaping into battle, ffs.

Oh, and the series is still being edited by noted serial sexual harasser Eddie Berganza. HASHTAG FEMINISM!

Let’s get into the recap.

Content warning for some skeevy mind control content and general discussion of the gender essentialist, body-shaming, TERFy attitudes of Morrison’s Amazons.

The story opens with a flashback to 1942, with Paula von Gunther leading a Nazi invasion of Themyscira, and god I’m already so tired.

idk, I mean, I get that Nazis were a major Golden Age antagonist, and Morrison is harking back to that. But there’s a broader historical and cultural context to consider. Cartoonish Nazi villains in patriotic WWII-era American comics carried very different associations than they do in 2018, in the midst of a presidency steeped in white supremacy and hate speech, on the eve of a midterm election in which a record number of neo-Nazis are standing for office, at a time when hate groups are surging, when migrant children are being separated from their families and held in detention camps— just. Not a time when I want to be reading about cartoonish super-Nazis, personally.

And I don’t really see why they necessarily need to be this story? The battle serves to illustrate how Amazons combat and… “rehabilitate”… their adversaries. Paula ultimately serves as a plot device. Couldn’t that maybe have been achieved without Nazis?

Anyway, Paula announces that she is claiming the island for the Third Reich, and Hippolyta is like “lol no”.

Okay, that part I like. Evil army storms the island, backed by guns and warships, surround a half-dozen barely-armed women… who all but roll their eyes. ‘Pfft, children. Fine, if you want to play this game…’ And the evil army can only gape in bewilderment as the women proceed to take them apart in minutes.

But this is where it gets weird.

The Amazons fire a purple ray at all of the Nazis, which… makes them all drop their weapons and start screaming “YES!” orgasmically?

Hippolyta tells Paula that the soldiers “will be taken to the Space Transformer. They will be transported to Aphrodite’s world where Queen Desira and her butterfly-winged Venus Girls wait to purge them of their need for conflict. They will be taught to submit to loving authority. They will learn to embrace peace and obedience. They will be as happy as men can be.”

Paula attacks Hippolyta, rips off her magic girdle and heaves a great boulder over her head— wait, were we supposed to know that Paula had superpowers? That seems like something that should have been flagged.

She effortlessly takes down the Amazons who rush to the queen’s defence and takes a moment to cackle villainously. “Behold the pride of Germany! The ultimate daughter of the thousand-year-empire of Adolf Hitler!” To which Hippolyta— okay, I like this part, too.

Hippolyta calmly gets to her feet and puts Paula in a stranglehold. “We are the Amazons of myth, my dear! I am Queen Hippolyta eternal.” She swiftly and efficiently brings Paula to her knees.

But, welp, never mind, it’s about to get fucking creepy again.

Hippolyta forces Paula into “the Venus Girdle”, a device that “charges every body cell with vitalising currents and harmonises the brain, encouraging obedience.”

Paula: Let me go! What is that? What are you doing? Hippolyta: The Venus Girdle? It charges every body cell with vitalising currents and harmonises the brain, encouraging obedience. A dainty thing, is it not? Paula: I won’t— I won’t— You can’t control me— you can’t— can’t make me— make me... oh… make me…

Paula: nmmuhhh… What’s happening? My Nazi ideals— slipping away— they— they don’t make any sense now… I— I thought— I thought— I was strong. What’s wrong with me? I’m so weak— I must be weak to wish to serve weak, cruel men— like— like Herr Hitler— I— I— Hippolyta: If you truly long to be a slave to the ideas of others, well… we can find a loving mistress to help you explore your desires in a healthier context. Paula: Yes. Yes! My queen— [sob] —how can you ever forgive me? How wise of you to know— to know this is all I ever wanted! Hippolyta: Devote yourself to me by following the Amazon Code. Go with out sweet Mala to Improvement Island. There you will come to know yourself until the Venus Girdle is no longer required.

Paula: But all I want is to serve you, my queen! I love you! Please don’t turn your back on me!

Basically, Hippolyta forcibly uses a mind-altering device on Paula that alters her brain chemistry to make her placid, compliant and suggestible, then immediately washes her hands of her.

So… let’s talk about this, because I think it strikes at the heart of the problems with Wonder Woman: Earth One.

Queen Desira, the Venus Girls, magnetic golden Venus Girdles that “harmonise the brain” — all these things are drawn from Golden Age Wondy comics cowritten by Marston and his collaborator Joye Kelly. Marston played with mind control a lot in his stories, and not all of it came from the bad guys.

Morrison’s bold, subversive approach to these story elements is to export them wholesale into the present day and force us to feel uncomfortable about them.

In other words, he’s taking some of the weirder and more fucked up story elements from a collection of comics that are widely agreed to be very weird, and then plonking it before your readers and asking, ‘hey guys, have you ever considered… that this might be weird and fucked up???’

There’s nothing clever or insightful about that. And there’s certainly nothing groundbreaking about a cis white male writer imagining a fictitious feminist dystopia where women strip away men’s free will.

Like, if you really want to be subversive with Marston’s Wonder Woman, how about you start by hiring a woman to write it? Why not see what this iconic feminist hero conceived by a cis white man in the 1940s and written almost exclusively by cis white men for over 75 years might look like if she were reimagined and reinterpreted by LGBTI women, by women of colour? By the women left out of those original comics?

That would be subversive. Morrison is just being a smartarse.

So yeah, Hippolyta turns her back on the helpless, brainwashed, lovesick Paula and walks over to Diana, who’s defied her mother’s orders and run down from the palace to get a glimpse of the action. She’s full of questions; Hippolyta brushes them off with the usual (for Morrison’s Amazons) ‘men are shit’ line.

There’s a moment where Paula and Diana meet eyes from across the beach, and each asks, “who is she?” Diana is simply curious; Paula is instantly lovestruck.

Paula: That girl… the image of my queen.

This looks like foreshadowing, but spoilers: it goes absolutely nowhere.

Sidenote: If the Amazons deal with invaders by brainwashing them, why did they want to kill Steve Trevor in Volume One?

Cut to present-day America, where a room of faceless men discuss the threat posed by the Amazons and their superior technology, which they assume extends to deadly weaponry. The only in they have with the Amazons is Wonder Woman, and to get through her defences they’ve called in “an expert in female psychology”, aka a misogynistic monster.

Doctor Psycho: Gentlemen. She may be strong and tough and smart and beautiful… but she’s just a woman. I never met one I couldn’t break.

Oh, goody.

Cut to a cute splash page of Diana playing baseball. She gets a lot of great outfits in this book.

She’s also clearly making an impact in Man’s World; her face is plastered across every magazine, and people flock to hear her speak.

A Q&A sessions serves as a thinly-veiled opportunity for Morrison to answer some of the criticisms of the first book. His response leaves something to be desired.

“Amazon training can make any of you into a Wonder Woman,” says Diana. We teach a system of physical and psychological health and vitality. The grace and beauty of Aphrodite, the skill and wisdom of Athena.”

Woman: What about Wonder trans women? Is there room for people like me in your utopia? Diana: There’s room for everyone. The Amazon Code was evolved by women over thousands of years and outlines a progressive, pacifist way of living and thinking that anyone can follow.

I’m sorry, but that’s a fucking bullshit answer. It’s a weak, superficial gesture towards inclusiveness that conspicuously fails to express any real support or solidarity.

And depressingly, this is 100% in-character for Earth One Diana, because Morrison’s Amazons? are absolutely TERFs. As with the mind control content, Morrison has exported Marston’s 1940s binaristic gender essentialism unchanged into the 21st century in order to ask searing questions like ‘hey but what if??? the idea that women are genetically more suited to ruling??? is simplistic and flawed?????’ But the most he’ll engage with the genuinely insidious implications around the exclusion of trans and nonbinary people is a smiling noncommittal, ‘Are trans people welcome? My friend, everyone is welcome! No further questions!’

Morrison’s Wonder Woman displays a profound disregard of context. He ignores not only the cultural, historical and individual contexts that shaped the original 1940s Wonder Woman, but also the contexts of the time in which he’s currently writing and the cultural space that Wondy has come to inhabit today as a feminist and LGBT icon.

Removed from context, Morrison is simply taking a hero who traditionally hails from an advanced utopian society, taking another look at the views that society actually espouses, and reframing her as a well-meaning but naive hero from an advanced but deeply flawed and unsettling society.

In context, he’s doing exactly what Brian Azzarello did in turning the Amazons into murderous man-hating monsters, just with more kink and vagina planes.

Woman 2: Umm, there’s a lot of stuff on social media about how you dress provocatively and promote an unrealistic body type, which is basically setting a bad example for women. I mean, the stuff you do is amazing and all, it’s just… does any of the criticism bother you? Diana: I don’t think there’s any such thing as an ‘unrealistic’ body shape. My own body is the result of diet, exercise and… um… sophisticated genetic engineering. Otherwise, I dress as I please.

Volume One made it clear that all Amazons have the physique of supermodels, and when they encounter the diverse body types of the women in our world, they are disgusted and respond with body-shaming insults. Here, Diana again avoids voicing any actual support (she doesn’t say that all women’s bodies are beautiful and valid, she suggests that her body type is not unrealistic), while also throwing out eugenics as a reason for the lack of body diversity among the Amazons. Oh good, I was hoping we’d get more Nazi parallels!

Finally, a militant white feminist stands up and observes that if the Amazons are capable of half of what Diana says they are, then they could dismantle the patriarchy overnight — so why is Diana wasting time giving philosophy lectures? “You can control people’s minds with that lasso of yours. Like you did with that dude on TV— so why can’t you put a lasso ‘round the whole world?”

Afterwards, talking to Beth Candy, Diana’s like, ‘gosh, Beth, I’ve never seriously thought about world domination before, but maybe it is time to consider stripping all mortals of their free will, dismantling all nations and compelling everybody on the planet to bow down before Amazonia.’

Then Diana gets on her mental radio and calls her mother, confessing her doubts about her mission.

It was around this point in the book that the Amazons’ dialogue began to grate on me. I couldn’t put my finger on what it was at first. Every line read like a ceremonious pronouncement. They used antiquated syntax and words, like “whole systems … must o’erturned be” and “she did, without due caution, this, her island home, depart!”. Even Diana would become infected with it whenever she was speaking to them. It felt like they weren’t so much conversing as they were reciting…

oh my god, that motherfucker.

Surely he hadn’t.

I scanned the dialogue again. I double-checked it.

He had.

Grant Morrison, that obscenely pretentious wanker, wrote all of the Amazons’ dialogue in dactylic hexameter.

For fuck’s sake.

After finishing her call with Diana, Hippolyta learns that somebody has vandalised one of the temples with the symbol of “a backward-turning sun”, i.e. a swastika. Unseen by everybody, Paula breaks into Hippolyta’s palace.

Makeup TIme!

I know I should be saving my money for things like costuming, tails (mermaiding stuff), festivals (food gets PRICEY at these things), etc, but.. I just got a bodysuit from GSLove that I was SO STOKED to get for both mermaiding n’ bellydance (a fishnet one that was gonna act as a much more affordable midriff cover) that turned out not to fit even in the -slightest.- So I’ll fully admit, I was disappointed n’ needed a tiny touch of retail therapy. So.. I reached into my shallow pockets (we’re talking rain puddle shallow here), n’ got a little something from BH Cosmetics that I’ve been eyeing for quite a long time; with the hopes of using it onstage as a performer & in my everyday life; as well as for review on my burgeoning YT channel. :) (Which, if you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to lately since I’m not posting here very often, is what I’ve been concentrating on in recent months; since I’m not dancing much due to my slowly-healing knee injury. But.. we’ll talk about that here another day. For now, back to the makeup!)

Enter, the BH Zodiac palette. ^_^

I've been seeing this on the BH site and on YouTube for a long while now (I could swear it was on BH’s site aaaages before people say it came out in November.. but I could be hallucinating), and I have been sooo curious about it! (I mean, c’mon design!!!) Buuut I never pulled the trigger until now.. mainly because I only saw it in thumbnails, n’ didn't realize it was anything BUT the baked shadows on the outer ring; thinking the mattes inside were just pretty graphics created to direct the eye to each shimmery shadow.) But once I saw some reviews of it on YT and learned it had TWENTY FOUR fabulous shadows.. including all those stealthy mattes.. and with a gorgeous HIGHLIGHTER to boot (shining in the center like the frickin’ MOON!!), I was hooked! XD So, like I do with BH (being a bellydancing girlfish on a budget), I’ve been floating back to their site every now and again for a while, to see if they were having any sales. And today, lo n’ behold, they were! ^_^ Which is why I FINALLY got the already pretty danged inexpensive 24 shadow + 1 highlighter Zodiac palette- normally $21.. for $14! XD *happy dance*

And my main excuse for justifying it..? Weyahll.. I've really been needing a rich, pigmented matte black in my collection (which unfortunately, the one in their Brazil palette that I bought not long ago for all it’s gooogeous rainbowy shades- is soooo not). Plus, I can’t deny it.. this thing has SUCH a cool arrangement of beauuutiful, versatile and what looks like (from the videos I’ve seen on it) suuper pigmented colors! So I'm not gonna lie.. I’m super-stoked to try her out! XD You just can’t deny how neato the overall design n' arrangement of colors is. :) (Even though I think they need fewer shades of purple & a better range of blues. Plus I'll admit, while I’m no expert on astrology, I’m not quite sure I get the association of colors they’ve made w/the signs. Like Virgo should be earthy and grounded IMO, rather than pink and pale- unless they’re doing a nod to her whole “Virginal” aspect. Or.. Leo should be fiery, Libra could be yellows, Pisces blues, ykwim? And why aren’t the names in order around the year..?) Still, I LOVE the array of colors in this thing.. most especially how they’ve arranged each Sign so all you have to do is pick a Sign/color theme and BAM, there’s your stunning eye look for the day in one pretty matte & complimentary shimmer, already set out for you. ^_^ -But you’ve still got this amazing color wheel of beauuutiful mattes & shimmers, giving you all KINDS of ideas for gorgeous eye looks to suit any need or mood. ^_^ (Personally, I’m thinking this is gonna be a GREAT travel palette, despite its size. From the look of the colors, it seems like you could do naturals and nudey soft looks w/it, all the way to bright, metallic n’ smoky POW shades, which I love! ^_^)

The only thing now is to wait (it seems like BH and some other companies take foreeeever to “process” their orders) n’ test ‘em out to see how they wear once they finally arrive! :) *clamps desk eagerly, watching e-mail w/baited breath for shipping updates* If you wanna see how that goes, lmk! Part of me getting this palette is also to test on my YT channel- created so folks on land n’ sea can see what works for us mermaids.. and bellydancers.. and cosplayers, and stage performers, & other folks who work under hot, bright lights, long days in unforgiving, sweaty festival conditions (where touch-ups aren’t always possible), etc. I know that what bellydancers n’ other performers need in makeup (let alone find “wearable”) maaaay not be what other day-to-day makeup wearers need, so I wanna help them find what works well, n’ weed out what doesn’t, yanno? :) Soooo I hope you’ll stay with me on this little makeup journey I’m embarking on- w/BH and beyond! ^_^ (For example, I’m currently testing out Maybelline’s SuperStay foundation through various conditions, n’ recently did a Battle of the Blue lippies challenge, that I’ve gotta compile n’ edit footage for, just to name a few. :))

Behold the power of the Cell Phone! - How I use my pixel 3 to generate Content for Social Media.

We live in a world where content is is readily available at our fingertips. Most people carry around devices that contain more technology and computing power than the first astronauts used to get into space and to the moon. Surely we can do something pretty cool with them, Right? As it turns out there is a lot you can do, If you know where to start.

Let’s talk about 3 things I learned to do with my google pixel 3 that will help me create content.

Blogging:

I started my website with Squarespace because it seemed to get started but had all of the advanced technologies under the covers. I also like that the templates already adjust your content to fit a multitude of devices. One day, on a whim, I pondered if I could edit my site from my phone. I was delighted to find out that there was an iPhone app already available. I was sad to hear that the Android version was “coming soon” . Lucky for me there was a beta version available that I immediately signed up for. Who knew that my early career as a software tester would aid me in something fun in my personal life! I was in the beta for like a week before the app was released to the play store.

The app has all of the features I think it needs. I can post create and publish blog posts. I can even make some edits to genera page contents. The best feature, In my opinion, is the ability to post images directly to my galleries. All of the pictures I take come from my cell phone so the ability to post them to my site is amazing.

While we are on the subject of pictures.

Photo/Video Editing:

The camera on the pixel 3 is one of the best out there, according to all the Tech YouTubers I watch (on my phone while standing in line or sitting on the “throne”). I may not be an expert on cell phone camera’s but I do like the pictures and videos I’m able to get with this phone. I also like that I can do some light editing on the go with the built in photos app. I know there are some better and fancier apps out there but I don’t actually have the know how to use them (yet).

One really cool and free app I found out about for video editing is Quik. Quik is a simple video editing app from the folks at GoPro. I’ve never owned a GoPro but after using this app, I may just put it on the Christmas wish list. Just loading a video I’d shot on my phone generated a pretty interesting short video. The app used some internal algorithms to put together something interesting and even picked some music to go with it. I of course said “no thanks” to that and started to make it my own.

First thing I did was dump the template musical selection. I make music so this sound track will be furnished by me. Also since it’s my song I don’t have to worry about copyright strikes! (Bonus!). Next, there is a highlight feature that would make sure certain sections of the video are played while others are skipped. Using this I was able to pick out the 3 or 4 moments I wanted out of a 5 minute video of my boys just being goofy. I was also able to add some still images, Title screens, and other videos to the mix and it was able to come up with cool transitions that matched pretty well with the downbeats of the song.

I’ve been trying to get a handle on Lightworks and Resolve for video editing and I don’t think I could even come close to what this app did in just 10 minutes of “messing around”. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure that with either of those programs I could far exceed the capabilities of the Quik App but again, It’s not a skill set I have (yet).

Since we are talking about videos, lets talk about the sound quality of said videos.

Enhanced Audio for my Videos:

Now I’m in the process of enhancing my home studio. Next items on the list are room treatments to get the best sound possible in this room. Hardwood floors and High ceilings don’t help. In the meantime I did get a shotgun microphone that I can attach to the phone that has helped with sound quality of my videos. I’m happy to have this as it will help with vlogging if I decide to go that route. One really cool thing I just learned recently is that I can plug my Focusrite Scarlett Solo Audio interface directly into my pixel 3 and record audio from it. This took some tinkering and I didn’t find any help guide on the internet that talked about this specific combination, but it works. The phone apparently puts out enough power the interface via usb. Also andriod apparently has drivers for the Interface. Now in my case I found out that the inputs are coming in as mono chanelles. Meaning input 1 is routed to the left speaker and input 2 is routed to the right but I found away to get my bass signal to “sound” like a stereo signal in the recorded video. I’ll have to publish a blog post about that process but I’ll start uploading videos with the finished product.

Now there is a lot more I do with my cell phone. This is just a short list of things I learned in the last few weeks. I didn’t even think about trying to connect the audio interface to the phone until the day of this writing. My phone is used every day from emails to bill pay. I even use the phone for the two-factor authentication process before I can even start my day job.

For my final project, I would like to analyze the negative effects that social media has on teens. I will examine how Goffman’s theory of self-presentation relates to how teens are presenting false yet idealistic identities on social media platforms. The distorted content that teens are distributing of themselves can contribute to concerning events of eating disorders and dysmorphia. Likewise, the dangers of cyberbullying and online predators are still prevalent issues that teens are likely to experience. Moreover, teens that are utilizing social media are developing habits that place them in different stakes and some in which their personal information is used to benefit brands and are used for unethical motives like identity theft as well as to influence presidential elections such as the Facebook and Cambridge Analytical scandal. Lastly, this ties with the implications that stronger, updated online privacy laws are needed for the safeguarding of teens and for the general public.

According to Goffman’s theory of self-presentation, people create an impression of themselves to be accepted by others. Usually, they are projecting an idealized image in which the bigger society approves. By doing so, they are falsely presenting themselves or simply hiding the efforts that were taken to display themselves in a different light. In this scenario, there is a front stage, the impression in which the actor is acting out for the audience (society), and a backstage, what the audience does not see, and this is when the actor is in its original state of being. Teens as users of social media platforms are exercising Goffman’s theory by uploading the content that they find “likable” to others. This is a common theme found in the films Growing Up Online and Generation Like. In these films, we see teens uploading personal content and contents of their liking for the act of receiving likes, comments, and followers. However, what I do want to highlight is that the personal content that teens are displaying might not be who they actually are. According to a Pew survey, “56% of American adolescents with online profiles have posted false information on social media sites” (Herring, 2015). For instance, in Growing Up Online, the teen named Jessica lived completely different lives in real life and on her Myspace profile as Autumn Edows. In her daily life, Jessica was a normal teen attending school but was made fun of as she would wear goth-like clothing and did not have a large number of friends. But, online she was a model who would upload sexually explicit images of herself. This presentation of herself was idealized by her online friends. The hype that she received from them made her feel like an acceptable individual. This is also the case for Stephanie Perez, a teen from New York. Stephanie states, “I did not have a lot of friends growing up but once I established myself on social media platforms, I gained over 3,000 followers in a year... I did not consider myself so lonely after all as I consider all of my followers my friends.”

The act of teens presenting false information of themselves has revolutionized throughout the years as photo editing apps like Facetune and built-in filters within social media platforms makes it easier for teens to enhance their images to appear more attractive to the public eye. Facetune is similar to the photo-editing application Adobe Photoshop as features allow users to blur, defocus, reshape, resize, smooth skin, and whiten their images. Mia Tavarez, an 18-year-old teen from Manhattan, New York, states, “Things have changed now. Before only professionals had the knowledge and access to edit images of celebrities but now we have apps like Facetune to edit our images to perfection. I can say it has gotten to the point in which all of my friends use it and I see a lot of other people using it as well.” This could be concerning as experts like Kostoulas states, “Such practices can contribute to eating disorders and dysmorphia, a persistent and intrusive preoccupation with one’s perceived flaws that may not even exist”(Kostoulas, 2017) Furthermore, Kostoulas brings up another point in which an excessive use of photo-editing applications from young users can lead them into a state where they would have trouble accepting themselves and would develop a paranoia about others seeing their unedited images.

The dangers that teenagers are susceptible to experiencing online is not only in the eyes of the beholder. Cyberbullying is a form of violence in which the person eliciting it hurts and threatens others online. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, “34% of students had experienced cyberbullying in their lifetime (17% within the last 30 days). Four out of five of the students who were cyberbullied said mean comments were posted about them online, while 70% said someone spread rumors about them online. Notably, nearly two-thirds (64%) of the students who experienced cyberbullying stated that it really affected their ability to learn and feel safe at school.” (Patchin, 2016). It becomes worst when the oppressed individual becomes overwhelmed and commits suicide. This was one of the unfortunate cases present in Growing Up Online, as the teen, Ryan Halligan committed suicide after being bullied by his classmates at school and online.

Another danger that teens experience online is online predators. According to PureSight, an online child safety website, states “One in five U.S. teenagers who regularly log on to the Internet says they have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the Web. Solicitations were defined as requests to engage in sexual activities or sexual talk, or to give out personal sexual information. (only 25% of those told a parent).” The sexual invitation extends to an in-person invitation as another statistic reveals that “16 percent of teens considered meeting someone they’ve only talked to online and 8 percent have actually met someone they knew online” (PureSight). Freddy Jones, a teen from Brooklyn, New York states that “he falls into that statistic as he is always meeting people he first knew online but has also been “catfished”, a term that defines a person who pretends to be someone else online.

As teens establish an image of themselves online, there are habits that they have developed along the way as The Center for Social Media in the School of Communication at American University defines it as choice, conversation, curation, creation, and collaboration. In the habit of choice, teens are utilizing media as a tool to obtain information that they are interested in. To go more into depth, teens are also contributing to the habit of curation as they can find the content that they are searching for through tags and folksonomies. Additionally, conversations have evolved from email and IM to direct messages and tags on social media platforms. Eric Martin, a teen from Bronx, New York states, “I rather DM someone than text them. Also, nobody uses email to contact someone unless it is to maintain a relationship professional.” Furthermore, teens are contributing to the habit of creation as they are developing content of their own. “After seeing many Instagram and YouTube beauty artists, I got inspired to make my own…I want to show people my talents and at the same time develop my following as there is a chance that I could get discovered to work with big beauty companies” stated Cynthia White. Cynthia’s mentality is where a lot of teens are heading to as seeing normal people become online sensations has benefited them in the long run. For example, artist Cardi B was once an exotic dancer that discussed her career as one on social media. Pairing this lifestyle with her blunt-like attitude made her into an internet celebrity. Lastly, we see the habit of collaboration as teens are collaborating with others for no personal monetary gain but are in the hopes of expanding their following. One sees this in Generation Like as teens are collaborating with others for likes, followers, and for one of the highest perks of obtaining sponsorships.

Companies are gathering the data in which the teens are displaying for their own benefit. In Generation Like we see teens like Ceili retweeting the content of her favorite trilogy, The Hunger Games to earn rewards and recognition as a fan of the film’s website. What Ceili and others do not see is that their likes and retweets create data in which companies collect to develop content and products that would convert them into consumers and prosumers. As companies track their consumer’s likes and overall activity, it would allow them to understand their audience on a more personal level.

But what happens when a collection of personal data becomes unethical? How does this affect teens? On March 2017, news outlets reported that Cambridge Analytical, a data analysis firm that worked for Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign privately stole the data of 50 million Facebook consumers. By doing so, they were able to influence the presidential election. Ultimately, this leads to the bigger picture that shows that teenage users are at risk of having their personal data being used for immoral reasons. Moreover, their data can be used to steal their identity. According to Experian, “In 2017, there were 13,852 complaints of child and teen identity theft” (Tatham, 2018). This leads to the big issue of how social media platforms can fail to protect its user’s data. After the Cambridge scandal, Mark Zuckerberg intends to strengthen privacy control settings by first auditing apps that were able to get access to a large amount of user’s personal information and the apps that refuse to cooperate will be banned. In addition, Zuckerberg revealed in an interview with WIRED that he plans to regulate Facebook by creating “guidelines rather than the explicit regulations model” (Valdez, 2018). He presented the fact that Germany has hate speech laws in which Facebook and other mediums are required to remove offending posts within a 24-hour period but believes it is not effective as other places in the world have surpassed the ability to be controlled. Although Zuckerberg has his mind going in the right direction, there are privacy laws that would interfere with his regulation and that is ECPA and CISPA. The Electronic Communication Privacy Act (ECPA) allows the government to obtain digital files without needing authorization. This includes digital communications like email and Facebook messages. The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) allows companies to share cyber threats with the federal government. The problem with these acts is obvious in which the government still has full access to the citizen’s personal information without needed consent.

The dangers that teens are facing online have always been present but as technology is rapidly advancing, these changes have been reformed to reflect modern time. With outdated online privacy laws that have been established in the late 1980’s, it fails to address these dangers. Regulations must be made and this can only be carried out by the government. However, to shed some light on this situation, Europe’s new rule, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been setting new rules on how companies manage and share user’s personal information. Although this applies mostly to Europe, it will affect “the global nature of the internet… than nearly every online service is affected, and the regulation has already resulted in significant changes for US users as companies scramble to adapt” (Brandom, 2018) This is a significant shift as the GDPR would allow companies to obtain personal data only by consent and users would be able to revoke that consent as well as request the data that the company has obtained from them. It is too early to measure GDPR’s success but if it so happens to be successful, it would be beneficial for the US to take part in.
