Public high school teachers and elementary teachers will get additional retroactive salary increases to compensate them for constrained wages under a law known as Bill 124.
When the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario and Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation reached new contract deals with the provincial government, they left some issues to be decided by an arbitrator.
The teachers and government agreed to an additional 0.75 per cent in each of the first two years of their previous contract in order to compensate for lost wages under Bill 124, but the amount for the third year was left to arbitration.
The unions announced today that the arbitrator has awarded an additional 2.75 per cent for the third year, amounts that are on top of the one per cent raises each year that were part of the previous contract under Bill 124.

I know I’ve been asking for help a lot and I’m so sorry. The year has already started out to be really bad. My dad is back in the hospital with blood clots in his lungs. Our electricity bill is due soon and I want to take that burden off his chest for when he gets out and is able to go back to work. It’s $124 for the electricity bill. This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

Last September I was involuntarily committed to the hospital after my therapist called the police on me. I was determined to die that night, I’d booked a hotel room and had two bottles of Seroquel in my drawer. While waiting for a bed to become available, drowsy from the Ativan, I spoke to the woman in the bed next to me. She was beautiful and when she told me she was thirty four, I was stunned. She told me that before checking herself in, she played basketball with a couple of strangers, got high with them. She had a fascination with Bill Clinton, asked the social worker to print out a photo of him. She spoke in gospel tones, told me that she was going to be the first black female president. Are you going to vote for me? I had no doubts. The other girl with us—the men were separated from us, one of them called me baby girl—was manic, showered three times in an hour and demanded her father bring her a specific meal. I punched the sink after a conversation with my mom, the skin bruised and tender and ugly looking. When I got moved to the unit, everyone was so nice. It was a unit for people who were stable and simply waiting for housing. People had been there for three, four, five months. I was the youngest and treated as such. I cried every single day, made a hundred phone calls. I got hypomanic on the fourth or fifth day; talking incessantly to the nurses, flirting with everyone, a rush of words, a sitting heart rate of 124. I felt like Christ. I lost at connect four five times in a row and convinced myself it had to do with the spirits in the room. I had three roommates, and one of them was obsessed with me. As she was falling asleep she mumbled: Jasmine has long hair and she is going to do the mission. The psychiatrist I saw said I’d been through a lot, suggested that the years I’d spent manic and psychotic could have possibly been processed through my brain as trauma. My dad brought me underwear and food, my mom told me I was faking. On my last morning there, one of the nurses, a sweet, blue eyed rough kind of man, told me to take it one day at a time. And one of the other patients told me he wants to see me in heaven. And to keep that in mind. At that point, I hadn’t been hospitalized in three years. And I felt a lot of shame. But looking back, it really did save my life. And I think I’m grateful.

Premier Doug Ford’s controversial wage restraint legislation contributed to the staffing crisis in Ontario’s health-care system, according to internal briefing documents given to the minister of health.
The admission was made in briefing notes prepared for Sylvia Jones in 2022, after she was appointed minister of health, and obtained by Global News through a freedom of information request.
They were contained in her transition binder, which is designed to inform an incoming cabinet minister of the inner workings of the ministry, decision-making frameworks and key issues the politician may be expected to handle.
One portion of the minister’s binder that dealt with “retention issues” in the health-care system stated that “concerns about wage disparity via Bill 124” were a contributing factor, along with wage disparities.
In another briefing note, the ministry acknowledged that Ontario’s health-care staffing problems worsened during the pandemic.
This is coming to light at the same time this government is appealing a court decision that threw out bill 124 and the ruling specifically cites the government decision to end license plate stickers thereby saving Canadians money as evidence that bill 124 is full of shit because the government is contradicting itself

Puerto Ricans could move a step closer to a referendum on whether the island should become a U.S. state, an independent country or have another type of government when the House of Representatives votes Thursday on a bill outlining the process.
A House committee approved the Puerto Rico Status Act on Wednesday, paving the way for the full House vote.
The legislation lays out terms of a plebiscite as well as three potential self-governing statuses - independence, full U.S. statehood or sovereignty with free association with the United States. The latter is in place in Micronesia, Palau and the Marshall Islands.
Puerto Rico, which has about 3.3 million people and high rates of poverty, became a U.S. territory in 1898. Activists have campaigned for greater self-determination including statehood for decades.
There have been six referendums on the topic since the 1960s, but they were nonbinding. Only Congress can grant statehood.
"After 124 years of colonialism Puerto Ricans deserve a fair, transparent, and democratic process to finally solve the status question," Representative Nydia Velazquez, a Democratic cosponsor of the bill, said on Twitter.

SPA 124 Lafayette Escadrille Jon Gutman writes, "Another burst of creativity amid the squalor of Cachy occurred when Bill Thaw noticed the Seminole Indian head trademark on crates of ammunition from the Savage Arms Company and ordered one of the mechanics, Cpl Suchet, to apply it to the fuselage sides of N124's aircraft as a squadron insignia."Mark of Distinction was commissioned by a relative of William Thaw, Mr. William Thaw Whitney. The Painting depicts William Thaw, a founding member of the famed Lafayette Escadrille, presenting the Indian Head logo to Capitaine Thenault for approval. Beside the Nieuport is Cpl Suchet and Whiskey, the famous lion cub mascot of the Lafayette Escadrille.
Comment: I had long assumed that the guy with the Legion d'Honneur was the French officer, but I was surprised to check out photos and find out that he's indeed William Thaw, he looks more like a Frenchman with that moustache, and I was even more shocked to find out he was just 23 years old! (born in 1893) and had served in the infantry in the Foreign Legion. War ages a man beyond his years, it seems.
