it's scary in the dungeon meshi tag right now....................... like.................... i feel like the writing of this episode was brilliant in how it included so much information and gave us a clear history of shuro's experience, a clear view into his feelings of resentment, and made it extremely and plainly obvious, with its use of the theme of being well-fed, that this is him at his worst.

the fight between him and laios was entertaining in how it was presented in contrast with everything and everyone else, but having it be a childish fight between two people who suck at communicating in different ways and for different reasons, didn't have bad intentions, and yet hurt each other, did wonders for their respective characterisations. shuro finally eats a bite of the food that senshi, "the guy who teaches everyone about being well fed", kept for him, and with a clearer mind not only treats his companions better (showing how touched they are that he thanked them is a perfect example of "show, don't tell": he doesn't usually do that or hasn't been doing that, but right now he did!) but also takes one of these clear headed, mature decision that laios earlier complimented him for.

laios hit him first - it was inappropriate. shuro hit him back - that was an immature decision. the fight wasn't nasty, it was equal amounts of childish on both sides and it led them to communicate with each other, which was what was missing between them. it was something that they both needed, it was something that was just for the two of them, which is why everyone else left them to it. once he ate something, shuro immediately behaved much better, so it's easy to picture - especially when laios has described his past self in a good light - that when he is in good condition, he has other qualities as an individual. i'm not saying this because i want people to look at a character i like in a good light - i'm enjoying him because he's very pathetic - but because it seems so clear that this episode's writing screamed "this is this man at his worst". the use of food guys. remember the food

of course i don't think you should use physical fights as a mean of communicating with your friends but i don't know if you guys (saw the big dragon woman) noticed that their situation is a little bit messy and scary and tiring .

#sorry this is a full-on ramble not like . a good meta post #but the writing and pacing of this episode were genuinely brilliant #seeing people get lost in the details and forget the over-arching themes and how they impact the narrative makes me sad #dungeon meshi #shuro's reaction to laios' (obvious to us) autism is something that definitely calls for a deeper analysis #''shuro was avoiding eating the entire time and suddenly shifted once he had a single bite'' is when looking at the big picture is needed #hell laios screams it at the top of his lungs. i won because i am well fed. you need to eat. you are not at your best. #it was also such a good way of presenting that the protagonist didn't win because he is The Better Character but because of other meaningfu #factors

i napped the entire day away and my dreams included, but were not limited to: big earthquake that, as it was happening, i was like "oh this is a bad one" and my stepdad went "its not that bad" - our house slid down a ravine into water / very vivid evening apocalypse that - after the blast hit and i died - swirled into sleep paralysis that occurred While I Was Dreaming (and i do mean swirled. i got whipped around like an inflatable tube man) / rich people sitcom where everyone was unbearable but i had my dear cat Letti with me / sound-based monster shaped like my mom that i kept from killing me via a funny joke (i didnt even get to finish my microwaved macaroni smh)

#it was dream after dream after dream #man that apocalypse one tho. slotting that one into one of my favorite death dreams it was so pretty and peaceful #everyone was just meandering to the beach but for some reason my legs were really weak and i couldnt walk #i tried! but i wound up just collapsing on the crosswalk. but a nice lady stopped and helped me up #and she helped me to the beach where everyone was gathering to watch the oncoming blast #oh man it was gorgeous. it was the only source of light so the ocean was glimmering with it and a low golden hue was cast over everything #no one was screaming or panicking! no one was scared. there were people on picnic blankets or just standing and watching #it was gorgeous and calming in a morbid sort of way. we were all in it together <3 #absolutely unprompted #a great break from the irritating other dreams! #the earthquake one was Incredibly realistic - foreshocks and accurate ground movement and everything! #house shook right off of its foundation #that sleep paralysis Within a dream one tho. fuck that one lmao #i woke up and was So confused for a second bc i couldve sworn i had already woken up #good to know even my subconscious is done with The Demons trying to get me #i love clawing my way tooth and nail out of sleep paralysis and not humoring The Paralysis Horrors #if i ever see my sleep paralysis demon im biting it so fucking hard. we have beef

It always rubs me the wrong way when people characterize atsushi as too much of a sweetheart. Like he IS a sweetheart but he's also snarky and sarcastic and most importantly he's very very angry. Do not forget this.

#I think its a product of like. People thinking that being kind and being angry are mutually exclusive #Which they very much are not #Atsushi is an extremely compassionate character who also happens to be angry!! These things do not cancel each other out #Like. He bites and screams and fights when someone hurts him or someone he cares about #He's been hurt so much and he's furious and bitter about it. #He's still a compassionate character. He's so so good. Being angry at people that hurt you is not bad. #He's not someone who just rolls over and takes whats thrown at him. He establishes this very early on #Idk. I just think taking away that part of him that's bitter and angry about the way he was treated #Is a major disservice to his character #Jesus this turned into a tangeant. I love atsushi a lot. #I'm a very angry person myself. I actually like that about myself!! I relate to atsushi a lot just as #Someone whos affected by mental illness in ways that often end up making me someone thats hard to be around #Atsushi is a tiger. He bites. 🩸BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA (1992)🩸

Not a favorite Dracula movie of mine by any means, but a must-watch movie for a lot of non-Dracula related reasons. This movie is an absolute visual treat, the sets and costumes are stunning throughout, and is filled with excellent actors including Gary Oldman as Dracula and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. It really isn’t a horrible adaptation either as it follows the sequence of events in the books fairly accurately, and features narration from the characters in the style of diary entries which I really enjoy as a reference to the epistolary structure of the original novel. This move is also one of the rare few that features the entire cast supporting characters, however I have mixed feelings about their portrayal, particularly Mina Harker’s odd romance with Dracula (another dead-ringer reincarnated wife romance subplot—completely uninspired) which I find to be a distasteful treatment of her character even with her original personality still being somewhat intact in other ways. Ultimately this movie is worthwhile only if I don't actually think of it as a Dracula movie haha.

My favorite scene in this, which I based my little illustration off of, is when Dracula’s shadow is moving behind Jonathan, I love the way it starts out subtle enough that you might not be sure you’re seeing it right, gradually getting more out of sync up to the moment it begins moving completely independent of him. I think it’s brilliant.

marty hart's cyclical return to praising family as THE thing that keeps a man grounded, stable, and happy (specifically in pointing out that rust DOESN'T have a family) even as flashbacks show him spiraling into jealous macho violence as he lies to, mistreats, and destroys his family over the course of multiple affairs (by which he deliberately steps outside of and away from his family despite his wife's best efforts to get him to reconnect and step up to be the family man he sees himself as)

rust cohle's repeated excoriations of the idea of individuality and personhood and the stupid self-centeredness and entitlement that comes with saying "I, a human being, matter to the universe, and the things I do matter", an ideology he carries for years and waxes poetic on for his interviewers as late as 2012, even as he obsessively works himself to the bone to get justice and resolution for the victims he's assigned and ultimately to protect children from the powerful and dangerous people who want to brutalize them
