#OnThisDay The Memphis Sanitation Workers strike begins on February 12, 1968, the last campaign that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked on before his assassination on April 4, 1968.
Eleven days after two sanitation workers were crushed to death by a faulty garbage truck compactor, over 1,300 workers walked off the job to protest the horrid working conditions, poverty wages, and discrimination they faced in Memphis, led by organizer T.O. Jones. King went to speak at a rally of 25,000 people and marched alongside protesters carrying signs reading “I AM A MAN” to address the basic human rights that workers were being denied by the city.
At his last public appearance, he spoke to the citizens of Memphis urging them to take action and support the striking workers. He stated “you are reminding, not only Memphis, but you are reminding the nation that it is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wages… The question is not, ‘If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?’ ‘If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?’” King was assassinated the next day.
After his passing, Coretta Scott led 40,000 people throughout Memphis in a silent march and the city subsequently voted to give union recognition to the sanitation workers under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Our exhibit on MLK and the Labor Movement will be traveling to the Africana library at Cornell this April.

Dressed as 1800s Abolitionists , Friends of Abolitionist Place activists did a visibility action on the @todayshow ! After 5-months of campaigning, The Friends of Abolitionist Place has confirmed that the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) intends to rule against landmark protection for 227 Duffield Street, a stop on the Underground Railroad and the last Abolitionist home left on Abolitionist Place in Downtown Brooklyn, NY. The LPC’s negative decision will allow the Department of Buildings (DOB) to grant a demolition permit to the developers who want to build luxury rentals at 227 Duffield. This means the demolition could happen anytime in February 2020 during Black History Month , unless WE stop it!
