My Firefox at some point developed an issue where after a computer restart it would take like 10 minutes to start working. Like I would open it and it would open and be able to do some stuff, but trying to go to any webpage just would not happen until like 10 minutes later and then it'd be fine. A similar thing would happen if I closed it, opened some other program like a game, and then opened Firefox again, though not as extreme. I figured it was doing something like loading a bunch of stuff into RAM maybe? And then opening another program would overwrite the RAM so it would have to do it again? idk what exactly was happening. I tried clearing my browsing history to see if that would help and it didn't, and I didn't want to mess with the cookies, so I just gave up and accepted it.

Then, when I was working on an HTML game with a save system, I needed to track down where the files were getting saved, and I found the "default" storage folder which had ~2.5 GB of data in it, including ~1.5 GB of tumblr cache data. I skimmed through the 500+ folders and deleted everything that didn't seem important (why does random.org need to store data on my computer?). It took a long time, but I eventually deleted like 90% of the folders and got it down to 200 MB. It was mostly just out of anger at the wasted space; why are all these sites that I've visited once to read an article storing crap on my computer!? Probably just for advertisement tracking and garbage like that. But I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, this was what was taking Firefox so long to load.

After I booted up my computer this morning, it took Firefox 30 seconds to open tumblr.

#original #also when i say “probably just for advertisement tracking” that's not just an assumption #there were like 50 different folders of “google syndication” which is indeed an advertisement thing of some sort #i actually had to use a thing called Directory Monitor to find where the HTML game was saving to and loading from #in case your firefox has the same issue here's the file path i found: #C:\Users\Dravid\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\qmy5wqdk.default\storage\default #the tumblr cache was storing stuff from like a year ago #also it was like every single site i've ever visited #including tumblr blog pages #wtf are they storing on my computer? #maybe it's all just cache stuff #but really? 1.5 GB of cache that needs to be loaded on startup? #if anyone knows what the fuck was actually happening and why feel free to give an explanation #also when i said it took 30 seconds i was guessing because i don't actually remember how long it took #i just know it was short enough that i didn't feel the need to go do something else while i waited #for the longest time my morning routine was boot the computer open firefox tell it to load a webpage and then play my 3ds or something #now it's a reasonable amount of time and probably less than 30 seconds honestly

While I'm worried about AI slop and autogenerated content overwhelming the internet and search engines, this was already going on. I remember long before ChatGPT was released me as lots of other people were already complaining about how it's impossible to find answers to technical problems outside of places like Reddit, because everything else was just shitty fake blog blurbs that said "1) try turning on and off your computer 2) try the windows problem solver 3) download our malware infested antivirus shit". This is for computing problems, but I also had the same problem when searching, for example, for biology or history queries, just lots and lots of travel blogs selling you some shit, and it has gotten even worse now that it's pretty much confirmed that youtube and google don't even show you the best results anymore, just whatever "relates" to your search (or more like, people selling you stuff "related" to your search)

I'm beginning to think that having a single (owned by a Usamerican megacorporation no less) enormous search engine for the entire internet powered by advertising and the sale of personal information isn't such a bright idea after all.

I think the best idea is to return to the idea of encyclopedias and directories curated by people and communities, websites that provide lists of other useful or relevant websites all neatly categorized. I'm only speaking for my own experience as I don't use the internet to shop and I don't care about that aspect of it (if I do, I use shopping websites, not google it), but for example, I could use community-run websites telling you were the best websites and media about such and such interest are (returning to a neocities concept of personal websites). This idea is not flawless, but I'm seeing an inminent collapse of search engines soon, so my recommendation is that you archive your favorite links and media (especially books) as well as you can.

COMPUTER SECURITY & GSHADE

Okay tumblr is scaring the shit out of me!! I don't know where this whole narrative of "It's just so people don't tamper with the code!" and "it was so your computer reset if you downloaded from an unapproved source!" is coming from!

This is not the case!!

Someone made a patcher to make GSHADE presets compatible w/ Reshade. One of the Devs decided they wanted to go on a total power trip and made it so if you downloaded unofficial presets such as the presets you can find on tumblr that were originally made for Reshade the patcher to make your gshade stuff compatiable with reshade, your PC would restart!

This is NOT NORMAL OR ACCEPTABLE.

When you install GSHADE, you are giving it administrative privileges to INSTALL. Instead it's using these privileges to gain access to your KERNAL and IMPORTANT directories to shut EVERYTHING down when it finds the patcher or presets made by the patcher. All because the Dev was attempting to keep people from making a fork (patcher) of another fork (Gshade) of a program that they do not own (RESHADE).

In the face of all of this, the dev has proven that they have the ability to do the same or WORSE if they decide to do so (aka if someone else pisses them off). Please do not disregard the safety of your PC and the data on it simply because a program can take pretty pictures of your game. If you want to keep using Gshade, that's on you but DO NOT try to make this seem like it's not as bad as it actually is!

This is the Dev addressing NoNite in regards to his program. Again, admitting that this code was directed at them and was meant to be "a lesson". Then proceeding to say that it would be Nite's fault for allowing people to download their patcher if the dev decided to do something EVEN WORSE.
