Robin Hood Rewatch: 2x12 The Return of the King
Tumblr media
The Return of the Birds! Have we seen them since the beginning of the season? Also Vaisey’s only scene in the episode (if you don’t count his one line offscreen at the end).
A bit of light comedy with Much hating the cave, liking the bat, and fighting with Allan over bread before Will drops “the king is coming” bomb. DUN DUN.
“Well excuse me for being pleased that all our prayers are answered!”
I love Marian’s defensive flip out of Guy’s grip and unrepentant hoodie flip-hands on hips. I also love her hair here.
Tumblr media
How many times has Guy literally shown/told Marian about a horde of money only for it to be stolen immediately afterwards?
Robin skulking around the washing line very ostentatiously talking to Thornton, a character I quite enjoy. A man of divided loyalties, who I only noticed this episode wears an earring.
Tumblr media
It always feels like this scene was meant to have Robin and Marian sparring as they argued - she’s practicing rather forlornly with her sword against a pillar, and Robin shows up carrying a long stick that seems like it could be used as a quarterstaff, but that he does nothing with during the scene except lean against it.
As usual they both have good points but talk past each other - Marian that she’s making the best of a bad situation and trying to protect her father, Robin that she uses him as an excuse, and acquiring ill-gotten wealth through marriage is hardly in line with her ideals.
“I have a plan of my own.” That last point got through to her, although it’s a plot contrivance that the wedding has to take place the same time the King visits Nottingham and no one thinks this is odd or reason to suspect something is up.
Tumblr media
Djaq’s little wave! Your face madam.
I do like that Robin figures out Marian’s plan to rob Guy almost immediately.
“I will think about you when I take her to the marriage bed” is perhaps not quite the burn you think it is, Guy. Also interesting that this is perhaps the first time Marian sees Guy mask off.
“Goodnight, gents.” I love Allan.
Marian bleeds more here than she does in the season 2 finale.
I am a sucker for Marian being carried into the cave with the slo-mo and her Theme playing. John is also very tender with her which is sweet.
Is this the first time Marian and Djaq have interacted directly? This episode scrapes by the Bechdel test.
Jealous Robin is jealous but he’s not necessarily wrong, although Marian’s feelings for Guy are more complicated than he gives her credit for. Marian’s also not wrong when she calls him out for supporting her even less than her father does.
Robin’s barb about the embroidery is harsh even if he immediately takes it back (a pattern!). But it doesn’t seem to have too much heat, because they joke about it the next morning (?? How much time has passed?) Also at some point between him storming out and her waking up he’s kept vigil over her, and she’s sleeping with her hand on his shoulder. I also find him stroking her hair and bopping her on the nose very cute.
Tumblr media
LOL
“Special girl’s food” is an iconic line for a reason, but I also have a soft spot for Much’s egg or bacon dilemma and “she can’t have both, I don’t care who she is.”
Djaq’s calm determination contrasted with Much’s flittering nervous energy is why I enjoy their dynamic so much.
Robin and Marian finally being honest with each other, and a really great scene. Robin finally hearing praise from Marian, but stopping her because it doesn’t matter in that moment, then finally admitting to her that she was right about his glory seeking. In many ways the mutual validation is more important than the I love yous preempted by Djaq (”I love you, you love me, we all love each other”).
Much coming in to see the surgery from afar and the slow tracking shot in to see Marian unconscious is a neat directorial choice. A well directed episode overall actually, well done Matthew Evans.
Pitts is a great villain actually, fair facing to Robin and Co but appropriately slimy in his reveal.
“I thought if I survived the Holy Land, that I would die by the fire in Locksley, not in a FOREST, in some poxy, poxy CAVE!” One of my favorite lines in the whole show. Once again I say Sam Troughton MVP.
Tumblr media
I am also a sucker for a deathbed love confession, and Robin’s breakdown with Marian’s Theme in the background always gets me. But I am still so mad because this works so well, it only makes the season 2 finale so much worse and unnecessary, because we’ve SEE how Robin and Co react to Marian’s (apparent) death, there’s no need to explore that further, and is the worst kind of re-tread, lazy writing. But we’re not there yet, so I digress.
This is one of my favourite episodes, the ramping tension, the arc of the Robin/Marian relationship, John, Djaq, and Much rallying to help Marian, the subplot of Allan and Will’s very valid concerns about what happens when the King returns, and a great cliffhanger.

Helena's Season 2 Timeline
As of 2x12 and all its reveals.
Pre-Season
Helena is emailing and talking on the phone with Mimi. Mimi tells her that she had a vision that Rosa came back to life.
Helena ditches Dirk and heads to Roswell.
2x01
Helena goes to Max's house and sees Liz and Rosa arguing about Rosa's necklace. Minor plot issue: how would she know they're at Max's house? Unless she followed Liz home from the funeral.
Picks up Mimi on the road to the Wild Pony at the end of 2x01 (which was apparently planned since Mimi was expecting her & happy to see her.)
In the car Mimi tells Helena that she saw Rosa in a vision. Helena responds that she had to see it for herself to believe it.
Helena tells Mimi that Jim Valenti told her when he was dying that Rosa could live again and that she was preserved. Mimi replies, "But you didn't believe him. No one ever believes us."
Helena says that if Jim was telling the truth about Rosa then everything else he said could be true too. "Like aliens are real and Jesse Manes has a weapon that can kill them. This means I have to go to war."
And then they go visit the bootmaker.
2x02-early in 2x03
Helena and Mimi spent a month in a hotel having girl time (watching movies and gossiping) while Helena tried to trigger more visions from Mimi.
Helena wears her blonde wig and goes to the hospital to steal Jesse's DNA. Did she also do something to trigger his stroke? For that matter, did he even have a stroke?
End of 2x04
Cam gets taken by either Flint and/or Helena
2x07
Helena makes her appearance at the Crashdown, has dinner with Liz and Max and Arturo, steals the ring and box, and signs the Crashdown over to Liz.
Rosa blows up her car.
Max confronts her as she's leaving and gets the ring back, but she keeps the box.
End of 2x08
Either Helena and/or Flint take Charlie after Max and Charlie rescue Cam from sniper Flint.
End of 2x10
Jesse kidnaps Alex.
Between 2x10 and 2x11
Flint steals Alex from Jesse's basement.
2x11
Apparently Helena tosses the box in Flint's trash can? Still don't know what the point of the box was other than A CLUE!
Writes Michael's ransom postcard, which Flint leaves on the trailer at Sanders' Auto.
Blackmails Michael (and previously Charlie) into developing the atomizer and toxin (i.e. the bomb)
2x12
We learn all of that. ☝️
Helena is the one managing Michael and Charlie while Flint is...off doing something else? She orders them to make two bombs. One loaded with alien DNA, one with Jesse's DNA.
Disguises herself as Jesse's housekeeper using her blonde wig and switches out the alien bomb with the Manes bomb while Jesse is in the shower.
Gives Charlie the alien bomb and tells her to destroy it (but basically gives her a choice in the matter...and Charlie doesn't know that she knows real aliens...still.)
Goes to Crash Con.
Argues with Flint who tells her that he "cleaned up the mess at the house".
And that's where things were left with her at the end of the episode!!
Crystal clear now, right? 🤔

A Suit-Wearing Ianto appears!
Pterodactyl! Crap, what’s the pterodactyl called again...MYFANWY
They really just noped right out of there

OTP PROFILE GAME!
rules: answer the questions about your favorite ship (all time or current) then tag other people to do it too!
thank you @chasethesun18 for the tag 😘 i hope I do you proud with my Miggy analysis
SHIP AND FANDOM: Miggy from Magnum PI. They are tied with Jamko from Blue Bloods for my favorite ship of all time. We all know that Jamko is now canon, and that they’ve gone a bit downhill, so in honor of MPI coming back April 10th, Miggy it is!!
MOMENTS:
What were their first impressions of each other?
juliet thought he was a free-loading charlatan who was trespassing at Robin’s Nest. thomas thought she was a literal goddess who he would annoy for funzies.
A moment you think that both/one of them will remember forever about each other:
wow... this is hard. probably when juliet told him that she would be his partner and that she was staying because she found something she didn’t want to lose (SOBS). that was probably the most moving and monumental moment of the series so far and it was huge in their relationship.
A moment you think that both/one of them wishes hadn’t happened:
both of the wish they hadn’t gone on dates with other people in 1x17. also thomas wishes that he hadn’t gone ahead with a case without juliet’s approval in 2x08. juliet wishes she hadn’t refused to help him find that missing guy in 2x12.
What is Their Moment for you?
jesus. there’s just so many to pick from, but again imma go back to when juliet told thomas she was staying in hawaii and going to be his partner. we really leveled up in 2x03 folks.
LIFE QUESTIONS:
Marriage? If yes, who proposes?
yes my babies will get married one day! thomas will probably collab with rick, tc, gordy and kumu to create the cutest, most romantic proposal ever. and all i can say is that it better be shown on camera. (blue bloods writers, im looking at you)
Children? If yes, if one had to stay home with them, who would do it?
i think they will have kids down the road. i literally think of this frequently and have found a pic of a little girl who could totally be their’s but anywayyyyyy..... thomas loves kids and i know juliet wanted a family when she was with richard so i think they’ll def have one or two. they won’t stay home with the kids because they’ll still be solving cases and kicking ass but my girl kumu would be glad to watch the kiddos anytime.
Housing? Where do they live together?
they already basically live together on a bomb ass estate for free. i don’t think they will move anytime soon (i.e. ever) hawaii and robin’s nest is where it’s at!
Pets? Do they get a pet together?
they have zues and apollo who love to torment thomas but it’s just for fun. they’d never actually hurt him. notice the only times this season that they went off on him was when he was with another woman.... anyone???? even the dogs know these two are endgame!
PERSON A & B…
Who would kill/remove the spider and who would leave it under a cup and leave the room?
juliet would kill the spider. thomas would hide behind her.
Who sings all day long and who gets so used to it they don’t even hear it anymore?
thomas is a musical guy and juliet acts like she’s annoyed but she secretly loves listening to him sing for fun.
Who can cook a gourmet meal for two and who can maybe use the toaster?
i think that higgy can probably cook some fancy stuff but i also believe that thomas’ breakfast making skills are on fleek.
Who wakes up before the sun rises and who would sleep in until 2pm if they didn’t have an alarm?
juliet is up real early getting that workout in. homegirl is ripped. thomas sleeps in as late as he can and juliet has to wake him up for important stuff.
Who is more affectionate/touchy?
i think thomas would be more affectionate but once juliet really comes out of her shell i think she’ll be all over him at home.
Who wears the other’s hoodies/shirts?
in order to erase the scarring image of abby in thomas’ shirt, i want to see higgy in one of his hawaiian prints.
Who said “I love you” first?
damn. this is a toughie. i’ve debated this back and forth in my head a lot. thomas may say it first because he expresses stuff easier but also he’s an obivious cupcake who prob doesn’t even know how higgy feels about him yet so juliet may be like “I LOVE YOU YOU STUPID MAN” so idk at this point. i truly believe it could go either way.

The 100 rewatch: 2x12 Rubicon
This is a pivotal episode of season 2, in some ways the show as a whole, because it marks the beginning of the gradual destruction of Clarke Griffin’s moral certainty. She has been forced to make tough decisions, but up to this point, she had not crossed the line and done things that felt really morally wrong, such as sacrificing a number of innocent lives. But this show isn’t willing to spare its protagonist and give her easy ways out, and puts her in situations where she is faced with impossibly difficult choices, where she eventually starts doing things that chip away at her soul and make her more and more damaged. This is basically her arc in season 2, in particular. A reference to “crossing the Rubicon”, a fateful decision, feels appropriate: Clarke gets to choose between sticking to her old moral views, and doing everything to save those she cares about, and it’s the same choice she’ll keep on making.
Meanwhile, the Delinquents trapped in Mount Weather make a big decision of their own, to fight back against their captors/killers.
And in the Jaha/Murphy storyline, the B storyline of season 2, which continues separate from the main storyline until season 3, one of my favorite characters is introduced.
Rating: 9.5/10
I’ve always liked Emori. She’s a great example of a good female anti-hero, especially one that eventually gets real character development – something that the show has tried and failed to do with some other characters. It’s also nice to have such a character not be a stereotypical “badass chick with a sword who’s strong because she can fight the best”, but a manipulative, roguish thief (though there have been popular female characters like that in various shows from Star Trek: TNG to Firefly, it’s not so overused, especially recently, as the latter trope is, and Emori has more depth than those characters did). She’s also one of the show’s two major characters with disabilities, but hers was congenital rather than something that happened to her as an adult, as with Raven.
I love the fact that the show didn’t go with the standard “bad man gets redeemed through the love of a good woman” arc for Murphy, but instead, had him change through love for a not-so-good woman. At first, it seemed it would go the former way, when Emori introduced herself as a damsel in distress and a sweet girl with a sad past, before putting a knife under Murphy’s throat and robbing the party, though she did help them reach their destination by whispering to him that they should go north. Which fits into this show’s tendency to create romance from negative interactions, but in comparison with some others, this one is not so bad.
It makes sense that this is who Murphy would fall for – someone who is a ruthless survivor and an outcast, more than he is. Or rather: Murphy, who likes to think of himself as the ultimate survivor, had a tragic childhood – like many on the Ark – but had an opportunity to be a part of a community with the Delinquents in season 1, and blew that chance – twice - due to his own negativity, tendency to antagonize people, and obsession with holding grudges and revenge. But Emori was an outcast since birth, due to her disability, which made her, in the harsh Grounder culture, a ‘freak’ that needs to be eradicated from the bloodline, as we learned earlier in the season. She’s known no protection or belonging, other to the criminal duo of herself and her brother. This is a difference that will matter in season 5: when she finally was given a chance to be accepted and valued as a part of a group, Emori was glad to accept it and learn, and she didn’t have the same insecurities that Murphy has, which made her more integrated into the group than he is able to be, because his issues are internal.
Murphy is at this point the character who gets the best lines (“Touch me and I’ll end you…In a non-violent way” - “Faith? No. I just got nothing better to do”), but he still has a long way to go until he gets actual redemption, because he’s still trying to justify his actions. (“I killed two people and tried to kill two more… I had my reasons, but nobody cared.” – Yeah, dude, everyone has reasons for what they do. Doesn’t mean they’re good.)
One of the things that struck me about season 2, and particularly in this episode, is the amazing cinematography with different color schemes: the desert scenes with Jaha, Murphy and the rest are full of a bright, blinding yellow, as opposed to the muted blue of the Quarantine and the vents in Mount Weather, while the other scenes have normal color balance and brighter colors.
In Mount Weather, the Mountain Men have started to drill and kill the kids. Cage and Emerson were apparently among the first to get treatments and be able to can walk outside, as did some other soldiers, like Whitman, the guy who performed the bombing of Tondc by navigating the missile and then picking up the survivors with a sniper in the following episode. It makes sense that guys who usually go outside on missions would be the first to get bone marrow treatments, while Cage took be the first or one of the first, and also forced one on his father. Dr. Tsing, unfortunately to herself, didn’t give herself one yet, probably thinking she had time, which had consequences in this same episode.
Bellamy meanwhile continues his mission by deciding to ask help from Dante, and manages to get it, though he wisely didn’t trust Dante enough to tell him who was helping him. He’s managed to get Jasper a gun, which allows Jasper to fight back, shoot a guard and save Monty again from being taken. Jasper has become sort of a leader of the Delinquents in their rebellion, thanks to his courage and determination to protect his friends, especially his best friend. Then other Delinquents start fighting with whatever they can to defend Jasper from being taken, before Bellamy irradiates Level 5, killing the present guards and Tsing. Tsing almost saves herself, by getting into another room, but Jasper stops her  from closing the door and lets her die of burns in front of him. It’s interesting that Jasper, when he shot the guard, looked like he was surprised by himself, even though he’s shot people before (Grounders on the bridge in S1) and that he was technically the one who killed about 300 Grounders with the ring of fire in the season 1 finale, but he hadn’t participated in close range fighting like that before or killed someone he could see. But just a few moments later, he was clearly enjoying his revenge over Tsing, sarcastically repeating her line “I want you to know you’re incredibly special to us”. Which I can’t hold against him, Tsing was terrible and I doubt there was anyone who didn’t enjoy her death.
But the most important parts of the episode are about Clarke. She and Raven are both on the edge, just as in the previous episode, and arguing a lot, waiting for another one of Bellamy’s regular calls. Any time he’s late with calling, they cannot be sure if he is still alive. The Clarke/Bellamy talk starts with a rare funny moment where the two of them sound like a married couple bickering (“You’re late!” – “Are you through?”), but things get serious very quick, as they learn from listening in to the Mountain Men channel both that the Delinquents are being drilled, and that the Mountain Men are about to bomb Tondc, where leaders of all the Grounder clans and Arkers are about to meet.
Clarke lies to Bellamy that Octavia is not in Tondc, in order not to distract him, but Raven later lets it slip in another talk with him that she is - something that will come during their confrontation in 3x05, when Bellamy will accuse her, among other things, of letting a bomb drop on his sister.
Now, the question is, what exactly was going through Clarke’s subconscious when she left to get to Tondc as soon as possible, and then went immediately to talk to Lexa. She certainly thought she should warn everyone and argued it to Lexa, and was shocked when Lexa, apparently cold as ice, started convincing her that they should leave and save themselves without telling anyone. But Lexa managed to convince her quickly by arguing that alerting people would blow Bellamy’s cover in Mount Weather, and ruin the entire mission and lose them the war – and telling her that she must have known that herself deep inside, or else she would have warned people immediately. Clarke seemed struck by the realization that she really must have felt that way – which may be why she later didn’t try to defend herself when Abby called her out on her actions (“You crossed the line”) and took responsibility, when Abby asked her to tell her it was all Lexa’s decision.
While trying to convince the insecure and confused Clarke, Lexa used the phrase “It’s our only choice”, which will pop up a few more times during the show. She also praised Clarke’s “strength”, telling her “You showed real strength today, don’t let emotions stop you now”. But I don’t think that’s really what happened, at all. The decision to let the bomb drop on all these people was a cold, rational one for Lexa, the kind she thought good leaders should make and that would help her win the war (and maybe also help her politically, by killing some other Grounder leaders), but for Clarke, it was all about protecting Bellamy and the Delinquents trapped in Mount Weather. Clarke started off with a strong belief in the value of human lives in general, she cares about everyone, and she tries to save everyone – but it’s hard not to prioritize the lives of people you care about over the lives of stranger. It’s a common, human thing to do– it’s hard to be perfectly impartially ethical, if your loved ones are at risk. And Clarke has been acting extremely worried, impulsive and driven by emotion – it was really obvious. I find it hard to believe that Lexa, who is very perceptive, didn’t notice that, so that line sounded like manipulation. It was as if she was validating Clarke’s choice by telling her it’s a sign she’s strong and a good leader, rather than panicking and struggling to protect her loved ones. And Clarke later makes the same choice when she is about to try to kill Whitman, but then gets distracted by seeing Abby, and gets focused on saving her mother instead, losing her the chance to stop the missile. (But in all the chaos, she forgot about Octavia… oops. Which both Octavia and Bellamy will hold against her. It’s not that Clarke doesn’t care about Octavia, but the fact is that she is not as important to her as Abby or Bellamy are.)
But either way, whether Lexa was manipulative or just imparting her views, and whether Clarke was already subconsciously feeling she would have to make that choice, this is where it became clear that, while Clarke may be able to have good influence in Lexa, Lexa’s influence and her advice certainly doesn’t bring out the best in Clarke. I think that their dynamic was very interesting, and very well-written in season 2, because Lexa was a “Shadow” character for Clarke - at the same time that Clarke found herself in the position of de facto sole leader of her people, and had to make tougher and more ruthless decisions, she met Lexa, the embodiment of darker traits of her character, upped to 11: as a young ruler who came to power as a child, she is both enormously privileged and has had a huge burden of responsibility, which made her isolated and emotionally repressed, and she believes in unquestioned, tyrannical rule, ruthlessness and treating people as expendable, if needed for the “big picture” (because this is what Grounder culture values and what Lexa has been taught to be like). Clarke is not quite like that, but she could be like that, and starts becoming more like it.
The difference is that Clarke is constantly questioning herself and always feels guilty over everything bad she does, while Lexa seems to have convinced herself that her actions are right and necessary and what a good leader should be, so she is not showing any remorse or doubt.
And this is why I knew after this episode that Lexa is never going to be one of my favorite characters. I kind of have a thing against leaders who let bombs drop on their own people when they could have saved them, and think it’s a great opportunity to use casualties for propaganda purposes, asking for revenge -something that Lexa actually argues in her conversation with Clarke. (It also has some unpleasant real world associations for me, which puts me off even more.) But I can forgive characters a lot when they show genuine remorse, so I still love Clarke, who didn’t make her decision in cold blood, and who is obviously deeply tormented and ashamed of what she has done.
The only part of this episode I’m not that keen on – which is why it doesn’t get a perfect 10 – is the resolution of Lincoln’s drug addiction storyline, because it’s a bit too easy and unrealistic. One moment, Lincoln, having relapsed, is again serving the Mountain Man like a Reaper and knocking out a Grounder to bring him to Mount Weather to get more of the “red” drug. The next, it’s enough for Octavia to punch him and basically tell him to man up (“Grounders don’t give up, we fight” – again with the whole “I am a Grounder” thing, which makes no sense) for him to be cured of his addiction? I don’t think that’s how it works.
Background info: Apparently, Mount Weather didn’t have to use missiles that often, because the last time they did it was before Lexa’s birth – over 20 years ago. It’s safe to say that they didn’t feel threatened by any armies the Grounders could have formed during that time.
Timeline: This episode starts 6 hours after the end of 2x11, and 2 days since 2x10 (that is long it’s been since Jaha left the camp, taking 12 people and 12 guns)
Body count: More people died in this episode than in any other one in season 2. (Unless we count off-screen deaths of Arkers from various stations that either died in the crash of the Ark, or were killed, including the deaths of people from the farm station killed by the Ice Nation – but we don’t even learn about the latter until season 3.)
3 Delinquents, killed and drilled for their bone marrow by Dr. Tsing, Cage and other Mountain Men. None of them were characters we knew by name, so the emotional effect was small. 48 Delinquents still survive (45 in Mount Weather + Clarke, Octavia and Murphy);
15 Mountain Men (though Cage said 11) –Tsing and 14 guards – from radiation poisoning on level 5, after Bellamy irradiated it (unless the guard Jasper shot was already dead before Level 5 was irradiated), but Jasper also caused Tsing’s death by not letting her close the door. This means they are 365 Mountain Men still alive.
About 250 people (we find that out in 2x14) – Grounders and Arkers – in Tondcc, from the missile strike, killed by the Mountain Men: specifically Cage, Emerson and Whitman, but Lexa and Clarke are indirectly responsible for letting it happen. No info on how many of the leaders of the 12 Grounder clans were killed, but Luna and Queen Nia obviously survived, though we don’t see them in 2x13, so it’s not clear if they were even there, or sent someone else on their behalf (or if Luna even responded to the invitation).

compilation post of whichever bbc america employee who wrote the captain’s blogs being an ally and a hero via treating janto as more than just a sex joke, being genuinely warm and funny, and mentioning ianto super fondly in nearly every single entry (especially s2) because jack is in love with him despite what everyone else would have you believe. but i, a gay, know, and so does bbc america social media staffer circa 2007-2008.
some may call this “fringe canon.” i call it “some of the only specks of canon that respect the show’s canon gay relationship as the loving and affectionate relationship that it is.”
text pulled from ianto’s desktop, which is a fun read despite the defunct photobucket embeds - i only included captain’s blog stuff, but there’s a couple more janto tidbits in there. none as nice as these, though. under a cut because it is Long.
season 1
(one really cool thing the writer did for early season one is have jack note unexplained energy surges in the lower levels of the hub - handy foreshadowing for cyberwoman)
1x03 (ghost machine - alien tech leads to murder mystery):
Other issues: According to Ianto, Splott is pronounced "Sploe". I think Ianto may have been lying.
Upcoming issues: Energy surges in the lower areas of the hub still unexplained; there have been several more in the past week. Ianto volunteered to investigate, but has not discovered an explanation yet.
1x04 (cyberwoman - the episode where ianto’s secrets are revealed and we all have a Bad Time):
Other Staff issues: Ianto Jones temporarily suspended from active duty, to return at my discretion. His love for Lisa clouded his judgment, and he made some serious mistakes - but I have to wonder if I would have done the same thing in his situation. Ianto's personal needs and emotional state have been overlooked; I should not have missed something like this. During his suspension, I will try to spend more time with him. Hopefully we can establish a closer working relationship.
1x05 (small worlds - the one where the “fairies” abduct the little girl and jack has to let them, which makes everyone else very mad at him):
Staff: Ianto Jones' first week back after his suspension four weeks ago. I have tried to put him at ease, and have briefed the team to be as sympathetic as possible. Obviously there is a level of resentment remaining, but they are trying.
Other Staff issues: After what happened with Jasmine, nobody is talking to me (except Ianto). They'll come around. Everyone comes around.
1x06 (countrycide - the one with the cannibals and we all have a Bad Time):
Staff: Brought Ianto Jones along to get him out of the Hub, out of the city, get some relaxing time in the country with the team. May not have been the best decision I made this year.
1x07 (greeks bearing gifts - mindreading and predatory lesbian, the episode):
Other Staff issues: Ianto is still suffering, but putting on a brave face. Will try talking to him over dinner, outside the Hub, see if there's anything more I can do for him.
1x08 (they keep killing suzie - the episode that ends with ianto hitting on jack with a stopwatch):
Other Staff issues: Ianto and I stayed back to go over the case files and reorganize the safe. Internal security cameras were temporarily shut down to run diagnostic tests, so there was no monitoring of the Hub for approximately four hours - but there were no security breaches to report. Everything went very smoothly.
Upcoming issues: Need to requisition a new stopwatch. Old one damaged while moving a desk.
1x09 (random shoes - outsider pov, the episode):
Staff: Things seem to be calming down with everyone. Ianto is coping well; I'm pleased with his progress.
1x11 (combat - owen has manpain and fights weevils. whatever):
Other Staff issues: Ianto surprisingly proficient at the good cop/bad cop routine. Although obviously, he's the good cop. He's too cute to be the bad cop.
1x12 (captain jack harkness - jack and tosh are stuck back in time during the cardiff blitz and owen and ianto fight about what to do about it):
Other Staff issues: Ianto tried to stop Owen opening the Rift, and actually shot him in the shoulder. Everyone except Owen is finding this very amusing.
season 2
2x01 (kiss kiss bang bang - jack returns from his doctor who appearance, deals with his terrible ex spike from buffy, and asks ianto out on a proper date):
Other Staff issues: Gwen is now engaged. I'm happy for her, but I'm concerned about what it might mean - can she stay here, still keeping everything from Rhys? I worry that we're going to lose her. And I worry about Ianto. I think he took it harder than anyone when I ran off. It's going to take me a while to make things up to him. He is a decent, good man, and I'm lucky I met him.
2x02 (sleeper agent - the episode with sleeper agents):
Other security issues: Gwen taken hostage again. I’m beginning to think she’s jinxed. And why am I never taken hostage? I could be a good hostage. I never get any of that Stockholm Syndrome action. And according to Ianto, my bad cop routine needs some work.
Other Staff issues: I’m in trouble with Ianto for duct-taping a CB aerial to the SUV. Apparently the tape made the wing mirror “disconcertingly sticky”. Still, nothing a bit of warm, soapy water can’t fix.
2x03 (a man out of time - tosh’s cryo-boyfriend they unfreeze once every year. also, jack and ianto Have A Talk and then make out):
Other Staff issues: Ianto and I made some progress, talked things through. What happened with Tommy got to us all. I know it got to Gerald and Harriet, too, back then, considering what they went through to try and make up for it – but that’s another story for another day.
2x04 (meat - the episode with the whale and rhys finding out. some of the team gets taken hostage and ianto tazes a bad guy in the head and growls out “pray they survive.” or something and it’s VERY GOOD TELEVISION):
Staff: Ianto turned into a fighting, kicking, stun-gun machine, it was very exciting. I must get put in danger more often.
2x05 (adam - an alien infiltrates their memories and inserts himself into the team, and his plot is foiled by ianto reading his diary and finding inconsistencies because he’s Very Clever):
Other security issues: The only thing out of place was Ianto’s diary, which I found in my office. Naturally, I gave it back to him immediately after reading through it. Several interesting factual errors in there - and I thought he would know how to convert inches to centimetres. You think you know someone...
2x06 (reset - martha visits and owen ‘dies’):
Security: Must speak to Ianto about using names from ‘’Sex and the City’’ on fake IDs. Last week he sent me into an alien smuggling operation as ‘’Mr Big’’, without telling me. Wish I knew how he kept a straight face. I’d give him a stern talking-to, but I think he enjoys that too much.
(right after this is a very solemn paragraph about owen dying lmfao)
2x07 (dead man walking - jack resurrects owen and owen has manpain about it):
Other Staff issues: In big trouble with Ianto for risking everything to go and get the second glove. I should have told him before I went, but he’d probably have cuffed me to the chair to stop me. And I’ve fallen for that one way too many times.
2x08 (a day in the death - owen continues to have manpain):
Other Staff issues: Now that we have all tried, it is clear that only Ianto knows how to operate that damn coffee maker. I suspect it contains alien technology.
2x09 (something borrowed - gwen gets married, but not before playing host to shapeshifting pregnancy alien):
Security: ... Female Nostrovite proved to be extremely resilient to bullets, so I had to get my massive weapon out and take care of business. Ianto is still quietly chuckling about that now, days later. Gwen’s mother taken hostage. Must run in the family.
2x10 (from out of the rain - the terribly written ianto-’centric’ episode about circus film reel ghosts):
Alien activity: ... We only managed to save one of them, but that’s better than nothing. Sometimes in this job, one is enough. I can still see the faces of the people we lost - they weren’t part of this, they were just living their lives, until they were taken. Ianto took it badly, this one really got to him.
Staff: Have convinced Ianto to take me to a normal cinema, to see an actual movie. He’s also curious to know if I still have my old circus outfit. If I can find it, I think a private show is in order.
2x11 (adrift - gwen pursues a mystery about the people the rift takes and then puts back traumatized, even though jack resists. ianto is the one who gives her the info she needs. she also walks in on them naked in the greenhouse. wild):
Staff: Gwen would never have found the facility if Ianto hadn’t helped her. He was wrong to do that. But, of course, he was actually right in the end. There’s no way Gwen would have let it go. I should have trusted her with the information, but I knew what it would do to her. Sometimes, the only way to realise that you shouldn’t look behind that door is to actually go and look. Gwen learned that. Nikki learned that. We all did.
Other Staff issues: Seeing Gwen experience it for the first time took me right back to when I first heard that terrible scream. After Gwen had gone home, I just held on to Ianto for a couple of hours, as tightly as I could.
2x12 (fragments - a bomb explodes and everyone gets a flashback to how they joined torchwood 3 as jack and gwen rescue them from the rubble):
Staff: Everyone came out of the explosion pretty beaten up, but no major damage. We got lucky. And so did John. Because if he’d killed anyone - if he had hurt Ianto - I would have slowly ripped him limb from limb.
Other Staff issues: Although I have to say, Ianto does look good all messed up and dirty.
2x13 (exit wounds - jack’s brother comes back and blows up half of cardiff and kills owen and tosh):
Other Staff issues: The one glimmer of hope in all this? I still have Ianto and Gwen. Whatever the future throws at us, whatever madness the Rift vomits out next, whatever we have to face - Torchwood will be ready.
Capt. Jack Harkness.
Ianto, I know you’re reading this over my shoulder, pretending to fix that damn shelf. So get over here and take me out somewhere.

hes rushed to the hospital and treated.
When he wakes he is told that the blood clot was due to the screws in his leg most likely
buck stays under observation for three days and is told he can go back to work.
Bobby tells him that he cant be cleared due to the clots.
Buck is upset as he is put on light duty and then transferred to the
then athena trys to help and invites buck to dinner buck points out that his new test cleared him for duty and asks when he can come back to work.
Bobby tells him that he isnt coming back since bobby cant be sure that buck is serious about his job

buck is extreamly upset and gos to a bar to get drunk.
At the bar he airs hi work issues to jason a cop who begins talking about his hard case
the cop is trying to take down a lawyer who was abuseing his clients
buck offers to help
between the two it is decided that theyll meet early the next day
the next day jason buck and the station chief meet
it is decided that buck will file a fake lawsuit  and record everything the lawyer does {he uses dirtycops for info on those that his clients are sueing and once he wins a case he attacks the cleint and forces them to hand over ther money}
buck finds out that the man works with [OWENSWIFE] and points out that he be able to get her involved
[owenswife] is brought in and agrees to help placing devices around their offices
buck files
the 118 freaks
two months later they have enough evidence to take the lawyer down so buck ‘drops’ the case and the chief gives him his job back
buck comes into the station and the 188 is frosty to him
he plays nice since he gets it, he hurt them
that night he gos home to his apartment and downs a glass of tea not knowing that it was drugged by ,,,,,,,,,, who takes the opurtunity to attack buck when he cant fight back
the next day buck is late because he went to the er and got a kit done and gave a statement
bobby reams him and puts him on scut work
the team ets called out and eddie hangs back to ‘supervise’ buck (he noticed something is wrong with him)
buck feeling dizzy heads to clean the showers
eddie finds him ten minutes later passed out and burning up
eddie rushes him to the hospital where its found that he was having an alergic reaction to the drug ,,,,,,,,,,, gave him.
Eddie stays with him ad asks what the hell is going on
buck tells him that he cant tell him everything but that his exlawer had attacked him for dropping the case and turning down the 6mil dollor settlement and that he drugged him.
Eddie though still mad about the lawsuit is pissed and takes buck home.
Bobby calls upset that they left early
eddie tells bobby that something happened that he cant disclose but that hes handling it and expects bobby to trust him in this.
Bobby is worried but agrees to it and gives them both the week off
eddie gos back inside and finds buck asleep on the couch haed in chriss lap as the boy pets his hair.
Eddie puts buck in the bed in the spare room and tucks chris into his own bed.
The next day eddie keeps trying to help buck
buck pulls him to the side and asks him to not make a big deal out of things / that he just wanted to forget about the incident.
Eddie agrees but cant help himself so buck makes him go back to work
that day jason stops by bucks apartment and tells buck that,,,,,,,,,, was arested and is not an issue for him any longer since he pled out to get a lesser sentence
{owens wife} sues the lawyer for the money he had stolen frome her firm and its granted
she puts it all into and account for buck. She shows up to bucks apartment and meets chris (buck introduces her as his mi’ada)
she ends up cooking for them both
eddie comes by and also ends up eating
when buck is teaching chris about the meal [owens wif] made she pulls eddie to the side and makes him swear to take care of her son before heading to her house
buck heads to bed while eddie takes chris home
four months after the case was dropped buck is on a different shift then eddie
buck is off that day while eddie works so buck takes chris to see a movie but finds that its sold out
chris is upset so buck takes chris down to the peir to cheer him up
the tsunami hits
buck looses his grip on chris in the first wave but gets him back and keeps him safe
chris falls in the water and dissapears
buck spends the rest of the day looking for him
at 8:30 hes dragged to the va hospital by a concerned civilian
the docs try to get him treated but he sneaks out grabs a radio from an abandoned fire truck and heads back out
he finds chris at 11:30  pretty briused and tired but not scared
“HIS BUCK WAS COMING”
buck is astonished to see that chris is holding a 3 year old old baby
buck dosnt want to risk the children be moving them so he settles for checking them over while routenly calling out over the radio for help
he checks chris over first
he has bruises all over and his right knee is dislocated
buck realligns the knee and wraps it in his over shirt
then he checks the baby over only to go deadly still
the baby a girl is his baby nadia right down to the hetrochromia she got from nathen
the baby is unharmed
buck asks  chris how he found the baby
chris found her alone floating in a carseat
he took her out of the carseat cause “babies arnt supposec to sleep in carseats carla said it was bad for them”
buck finally geta station on the line not the 118 but itll do
he gets them to drop him at eddies abuales as she can get chris help
pepa takes chris buck abula and nadia to the hospital and while she sees to chris buck walks two blocks to the 118s house and grabs nadias paper work from his locker(kept there for safe keeping) then he returns and cheks nadia in
both kids are released that night and buck takes everyone to his apartment
(peppa dosnt want to be alone scared of looters)
finaly buck get eddie on the phone and tells him everything leaving out nadia
the 118 is still working but will be off soon
buck calls judd and is surprised to  find out that hes in cali with grace visiting graces father
judds there withen an hour and is estatic over nadia being alive and to happy to question it
but buck is concerned but decides to ignore it
after everyone catches a nap 2:00am to 6:00am buck gets everyon (peppa abuela chris nadia judd and grace to the station)
while abuela and grace occupy chris and keep an ey on nadia
judd peppa and buck cook tons of food that  judd delivers to nearby hospitals
michael shows up with karen denny harry and may in tow
harry denny and karen join abuelas group
while micheal joins judd and may joins buck
the 118 gets back at 9:00am and are stuned at how buck is handleing things
buck meets them at the door and insists that they shower and clean up before they go up since the kids are up therewhile they shower buck gives them a rundown of chriss health which freaks out eddie but buck points out that the boy is fine and is siting with eddies abuela and is practically crowing about finding nadia
eddie asks who nadia is and buck tells them that shes his daughter and that hes been looking for her for THREE years and SOMEHOW chris found her in the midst of a damn tsunami
hen makes a joke about his luck and eddie asks if shes ok
“yeah chris kept her safe and sound” buck then points out that peppa and abuela came to the station cause they were worried about looters but that chris is bribeing her with baby time and jokes that {buck}he’ll have to share his daughter to avoid causing drama
which makes everyone laugh

Calm down about Bellarke and Clarke, let’s talk.
Here goes the meta.....
It’s honestly hard for me to even know where to begin with this cause it seems like the writers are touching so many plots at the same time with 4x11 that I’m a bit overwhelmed.
But we can start with this: what Clarke did (betraying the grounders) is not shocking, and it’s not character retrogression OR stagnation.
And it’s not the end of Bellarke either,if the plot from the entire show is anything to go by.
(this is not the “me romanticizing the gun scene, meta.” So stick with me as I try to go through Clarke’s and Bellarke’s plots and explain what I’m thinking )
Clarke has been that character that ever since season 1 stopped at nothing to make sure her people survived – whatever wide or narrow her spectrum of “her people” were at the time. She tortured Lincoln to save Finn, she let a bomb drop in TonDc, she killed innocents in Mt Weather, she tried to freaking force-chip Luna on season 3....
Bellamy: “What are you doing”
Clarke: “What I have to, like always”
(4x11 let’s see what always means...)
Who we are and who we need to be to survive are very different things.
(1x07 – lol you never thought I’d use this quote against you)
Abby: You knew, and you let this happen?
Clarke: We had no choice.
Abby: So many people. Our people.
(2x12)
Luna: You believe that to defeat an enemy who will stop at nothing, you must stop at nothing. How is that different than blood must have blood?
 (3x14)
Octavia: “What do you expect us to do, Clarke, walk into random villages asking for their Nightbloods?”
Clarke “If that's what it takes.” (3x13)
Monty: You're the one going too far and using the same old justification "it's all for my people.”
(4x04)
Those are few examples, forgive me for not remembering everything. But this is to say, this is a pattern happening along the seasons, something that is not getting better- something that is growing, and not something that came out of nowhere on season 4.
Everyone knows Clarke has the “I bear it so they don’t have to” complex, which goes further than Clarke sacrificing herself for others…. It’s about Clarke doing “ugly“things to make sure others can live (2x16). And this was never solved, because she was never faced with a plot where this was officially “a problem”.
 That is: until now.
(Funny how they echoed this line this season …)
The only way to make characters face their flaws head on is when they become a problem, it’s simple like that.
They won’t just “figure it out on their own” and suddenly show up better people on our screens, that throws away the need of a story in the first place. And this is no news either, we’ve seen this happen with nearly every character on this show: Abby, Kane, (even Jaha), Murphy and Bellamy.
All of them did terrible things, caused by their terrible flaws, and they had to face them. All of them lost themselves. Well, Clarke has been losing herself because of her flaw ever since the beginning in case no one noticed:
 1x07 quote again:
Who we are and who we need to be to survive are very different things. [echoing: Abby 4x08 “First, we survive. Then we find our humanity again.” ]
Abby: Please, Clarke. Please tell me this wasn't you.
(2x12) [echoing Clarke to Bellamy: “This is not who you are” 3x05]
Jaha: Heavy lies the crown. I know the burden of keeping a secret you think is going to destroy your people.
 Clarke: (..)You floated my father.
Jaha: And now you understand why. No leader starts out wanting to lie or imprison or execute their people. The decisions you face just whittle you down piece by piece. (4x02)
Monty: Who are you? When did you become this person?
Clarke: I haven't become anyone.
Monty: The Clarke I know wouldn't be arresting her friends. (4x04)
Clarke: I tried to be the good guy.
Abby :Maybe there are no good guys. (2x16)
[ echoing: Bellamy:” What do you do when you realize you might not be the good guy?”
Clarke:” Maybe there are no good guys”. 3x11]
Again, just a few examples. But the point is, Clarke’s rationality – her “head”- gets a lot in the way of who she is, because ever since the beginning she’s been learning over and over that to survive, to get people alive, she can and should sacrifice everything. She put herself in the place of a leader, of the savior, at the cost of herself (and, many times, others too).
And, problem is, when Clarke’s mind is set in something, there’s little that can change it. Which turned this into the trainwreck we’re living now. Clarke is on mode “we do what we have to do, what ~I~ have to do to survive” upped up by a ton because this girl is facing the freaking apocalypse now – and others are just as crazy worried as her. And she’s under the influence – and support- of a character that has been sneakily (but clearly) paralleling her all season, Jaha.
Jaha: Heavy lies the crown. I know the burden of keeping a secret you think is going to destroy your people. (…)
(...)
Clarke: So what do I do
Jaha: We make the best decisions that we can with the information that we have
However, there’s a difference between Clarke and Jaha. (and many other leaders on the show).
(You so knew this was coming)
Something that may help her out of the true craziness that is deciding who lives and dies (1x04/4x03), that may give her a different opinion when she needs one, that may show her she’s not alone in those decisions, that may balance out her “I need to this ~thing~ at all costs for the greater good” thoughts.
Jaha (to Bellamy on Clarke): She's lucky to have you. Leadership is a lonely pursuit, but you keep her centered. (4x03)
This was said this season, so please pay attention to it closer. And by the one character paralleling Clarke, by the guy that made so many leadership mistakes. By the guy that said THIS just on the previous episode
(again:)  Jaha: “And now you understand why. No leader starts out wanting to lie or imprison or execute their people. The decisions you face just whittle you down piece by piece.” (4x02)
Bellamy is the crack in Jaha’s own theory (and Clarke is the same for Bellamy – You got it backwards and all that shiz but we’re not here for that).
Throughout the entire show, Bellamy is Clarke’s cold hard thinking weakness. In more ways than one.
Not just because he disagrees and balances her out in leadership decisions- as Jaha pointed out, but because very often her feelings for him force her to open exceptions that would make no sense for her rational (”greater good”) self:
*ALIE needs Clarke to break and tell her where the chip is. But Clarke isn’t breaking because of “The greater good” and sacrificing herself over it-*
ALIE!Abby: Her friends are her weakness.  Start with Bellamy Blake.
 (3x15)
*Clarke, spending the whole day trying to figure out the perfect people to be on her rational list, just can help anymore and writes Bellamy’s name for no rational reason she could easily shout out during 4x04*
(4x03)
And Bellamy Blake? Come on. (4x04)
 (yeah son, bellamy blake.)
Clarke: We have more bullets than you have men. You'll lose.
Roan: Maybe. We'll both take losses, Kane and Bellamy among them
Clarke: You think you can shake my resolve? I was willing to sacrifice my own mother to stop A.L.I.E. (…) Wait. What if we share it?
(4x05)
 L. exa: Once Bellamy shuts down the acid fog and the battle begins, everything will be clear.
Clarke: What if he can't? What if it was too dangerous and I sent him in there anyway?
(2x14 – doubting their own “greater good” plan but okay...)
Clarke: I care about all of them.
 L. exa: Yet you worry about him more.
(2x14.) [ Echoing 3x15, 4x03, 4x04 and 4x10 all at once, how pretty]
*Let’s not get started on the fact she chose to let skypeople chancellor (aka KANE) out of the bunker but she went out of her way to make sure Bellamy was in it, rationality says bye*
(4x10)
This is why it makes complete sense for the bellarke conflict to happen next week. That’s why it clicks they’d pick the gun scene to be on the promo.
Clarke’s sides are (finally) conflicting.
Clarke is on the peak of her leadership-entitled-unilateral-decisions now, and she can’t go there without a conflict; She can’t go there without facing the one (main but not only) thing that has kept her away from these lonely and impersonal decisions for so long.
It’s make it or break it. She can go full Jaha or she can go back.
And they can’t do that without Bellamy, I’m sorry. They CAN have Abby, they can have Murphy or Monty or anyone else, but it’s BELLAMY the character that had stood out all show long as the person that makes Clarke second guess decisions which seems so sure and “right”.
HE is the first weakness. It wasn’t Abby, Murphy, Monty, Jasper, Raven, Kane, Jaha, Roan, L/exa, Finn that ever made Clarke not choose the “greater good” at several times, it was Bellamy.
( more than once, more than twice...).
So that’s it, this is how we know THIS is Clarke’s rock bottom.
Because it seems like (by a probably carefully misleading promo) that Clarke is willing to sacrifice the one person she’s ever sacrificed others for in the name of the “greater good”.
She can either turn off completely and shoot the one person that keeps her centered or she can realize she’s off the rails.
(is she capable of hurting Bellamy… is she really…)
Now, being this season COMPLETELY centered on how Clarke’ s leadership/ “greater good” decisions are turning her into a bad person (rewatch 4x08 and 4x09 if needed) AND on how people should let others MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS (rewatch Bellamy’s arc ever since 4x07); being Clarke and Bellamy the main characters of this show; And as episode 4x12 description pretty much shows their group of friends outside the bunker- you tell me what you think it’s gonna happen.
Tumblr media
(PS: yes, of course I can be wrong. But,hopefully, everything i said made sense and we’re reading the writers right if the plot is anything to go on)

Is it just me or has Clarke lost a lot of the relationships she had with the delinquents? Her and Jasper's relationship completely dissolved even after he stopped being angry. Her and monty have barely interacted in the past 2 season. Her and Octavia have been done for a while. Like I feel Bellamy is the only delinquent that she has a relationship with anymore. Hopefully, next ep we will see some more of her and raven's relationship. But it just makes me sad bc Clarke has almost all her friends.
No, it’s not just you and I think there’s a reason for this that plays into Clarke’s overall Character/Story arc. Again, y’all come and ask questions not expecting meta and then it just....springs out of my head because you guys just say the absolute right things.
What you said made me realize that...Clarke has been alone since Season 2. Like, we talk constantly about Clarke and Bellamy being co-leaders and discuss why that’s so frustrating, but we’re thinking as the audience, which means we haven’t taken the time to put ourselves in Clarke’s shoes.
Although we know that Clarke can always depend on Bellamy to make the big decisions with her, and that he in fact has always been there for the “lever pulling moment” (even in S3, the script tells us Clarke finds strength in the memory of Bellamy helping her pull the lever in S2), but for most of every Season, Clarke has been isolated from her strongest support system: her people (and specifically-Abby and Bellamy).
Most people, when they discuss Clarke, say things like “I really miss Season 1 Clarke!” and “When will Clarke get back to her Season 1 self?” And I’ve seen people say “She’s not that girl anymore because of all of the things she’s had to do!” but the key difference between Season 1 Clarke and Season 2-4 Clarke is that she didn’t have her co-leader by her side.
See evidence:
Clarke and Bellamy interact in a leadership based capacity in every single episode of Season 1, with no exceptions (they also have their friendship building moments). Clarke also has the benefit of being surrounded by the Core Four in this season (Raven and Octavia also play key integral roles in this Season). Clarke is noticeably not bearing the majority of the burden, and so even as she makes heavy decisions, someone else made the decision with her (even closing the Dropship on Bellamy wasn’t a decision she made by herself, Miller was the one who told her they didn’t have time and that they had to close the door now.).
Let me be clear and say that this in no way means that Clarke is more likable when she is with a man. I’m saying that Clarke is less burdened in Season 1, more open and she shares that burden more equally with those in her Core support system.
Season 1 ends with Clarke isolate from others and Season 2 picks up the same way, Clarke alone, in a white sterile room. And this should have been the first sign of what was waiting for us in regards to Clarke’s journey. Even as she is surrounded by the 47 in Mt. Weather, Clarke obviously holds herself (and her plans to escape) away from them. When she escapes, she doesn’t escape with one of her people, she escapes with Anya, a Grounder leader (clever bit of foreshadowing there). She is reunited with her mother and Bellamy for only 4 episodes before she agrees with Bellamy’s plan to go into the Mountain. As soon as she takes L/xa’s advice “Love is weakness.”, Clarke’s separation from her support system becomes even more obvious:
She and L/xa literally spend 2x10 away from their people being chased by a giant gorilla.
In 2x11 Clarke actually takes control away from her mother (”You may be the Chancellor, but I’m in charge.”) and in doing so she pushes away one of her strongest supports (Abby) while her other (Bellamy) is in the mountain. Raven (the third part of the Core Four) is still furious with her over Finn’s death, and Octavia (4/4 of the Core Four) is too concerned with Bellamy and Lincoln’s absence to be much help.
In 2x12, Clarke and L/xa abandon their people to a bomb, an act which leaves Abby horrified by her daughter and Clarke even more alone on this leadership journey than she’s been before (save L/xa), because Raven is at Camp Jaha and Octavia is in TonD.C.
In 2x13, Clarke is still only partnered with L/xa, a solitary leader.
In 2x14, Clarke is still partnered with L/xa, a solitary leader.
In 2x15, Clarke and L/xa attempt to open the doors, but ultimately fail (which is a large bit of foreshadowing).
In 2x16, Clarke is back with a team (Bellamy and Monty) and they succeed at taking down the Mountain but Clarke leaves on a solitary journey.
Everything about Season 2 tells us that Clarke does better, is successful, when she is operating as part of a team, not a solitary leader.
In Season 3, we open with Clarke again, separated from her people, and she remains that way until the very last seconds of episode 3x10 (almost the entire Season), even when she is back with her people for brief moments, she’s still rejecting the idea that she can, and indeed needs, to lead with others. Again, it’s not until the finale of Season 3 where Clarke stops trying to make decisions and lead by herself, that she finally succeeds and is able to defeat A.L.I.E.
We’re seeing it again in Season 4, Clarke is isolated, even as she is surrounded by her support system, because she has not released the lessons she learned from L/xa (primarily) and Dante (only a bit).
L/xa, as a divinely appointed leader, was raised to understand that the final say is and always should be hers. She was raised to believe that she did not need to depend on others, and that, as a function of her position, all others were subject to her wishes.
Dante, as president, is also someone who doesn’t seem to have a group of people that he reports to, or who hold him accountable.
Ironically, both faced similar fates (their people turned on them, both killed by a gunshot).
We actually see a bit of this happen for Clarke in Season 4 (when Monty reads the list and I suspect we’ll see it again in 4x11), because Clarke is not allowing others to lead with her, her people are turning against her.
Clarke has not yet accepted that she is not a person who is capable of being a solitary leader (Bellamy actually played on this in 4x11, when he pointed out all the times “they” saved everyone). Clarke wants to save everyone (her mother calls her on this in the pilot episode) and in her mind, part of saving everyone is also protecting them (at least she thinks she is) from making the life or death decisions.
But Clarke hasn’t come to terms with the fact that she’s never truly made a life or death decision by herself, she’s never done any of her biggest saves by herself, and every time she tries to lead alone, she fails. Clarke is a leader who NEEDS others.
And I am so hopeful that we will finally see the culmination of what has been a 3 Season long, achingly painful arc.
Good Character Growth is not linear, and sometimes it takes Seasons before it reaches the end.
