what: house karstark of karhold, of lands that stretch from east of the last river and the bay of seals house words: the sun of winter - these words are deeply rooted in the ancient traditions of the people of karhold seeing the sun as a deity, with equal love and adoration as the heart trees. duke of karhold: brandon karstark, hand of the king duchess of karhold: meera reed. vassals: house flints of grey cliffs, house lake, house lightfoot, house mollen, house moss, house wells. upon brandon's marriage to meera reed, lord brandon karstark assumes reed lands upon the ruling lord's death. this includes vassals of house blackmyre, house boggs, house cray, house fenn, house greengood, house marsh, house peat and house quagg.
ooc: below you’ll get a tdlr of house karstark’s history, lore and some traditions upon their lands.
history: a thousand years ago, lord karlon stark, youngest son of winterfell, ventured to the east of the land of always winter to put down a rebel lord. upon victory, he was rewarded for his success and bravery with the keep of karl's hold on the grey cliffs, which later went on to become karhold, and karhold starks became karstarks. thus, the karstarks and starks of winterfell remain close kin to this very day. in the thick darkness of the forests whilst putting down the rebel lord, where karlon stark found himself hanging onto his life by a thread, a beam of winter sun shot through the branches and illuminated his sword when he thought it lost to the dirt. it was this that allowed karlon stark to get back on his feet. local tongue/dialect: the sun tongue (finnish) religion of local folk: the old gods of the forest, with the added element of the sun being a form of the old gods. the smallfolk pray to the sun as well as the old gods of the forest and perform dances around crackling hearths. traditional foods: hearty vegetable soups, meat stews based in beef, pork, duck, reindeer, salmon and whitefish, with flavours made from local berries and herbs such as cloudberry. common smallfolk jobs: reindeer herders, fishermen, woodcutters, dog sledders/breeders, farmers, tailors, weavers, candlemakers
cultural practices:
- karstarks wear thick cloaks made of pelts of seals, bears and wolves, or black woolen cloaks patterned with the white sunburst - their sigil. they wear red at funerals, for it is believed to be a time to return to the earth through the fire. ashes are either to be kept, or to be spread depending on the individual and choice of the family; they can be spread anywhere within karhold’s lands.
- karstark warhorns are deep and mournful, though they are not always rung in times of war; it matters on the amount of times it is rung. once for war, twice for the death of a member of house karstark, three times following a marriage union and four times before the smallfolk to announce a birth.
- 'the sky is dancing' is reference to the northern lights, where the sky taints green. it is seen as a good omen, and a sign the gods are happy with their people.
- "we are kin, stark and karstark" they are take their family in winterfell very seriously - it is not used to brag for being related to the starks, but an oath of loyalty. you come for the starks, the karstarks will come for you.
- people say a prayer in the sun tongue upon sunrise, or when they arise to thank the gods for the sun gracing them; there is a deep appreciation and love for the winter sun.
- karstark men and women hunt alike, and hunt for their own prey. it is common for them to be the ones to bring back the food regularly, along with large hunting parties, for the household's food supply.
- upon reaching six months, it is seen as customary for a baby of house karstark to be upon a sled pulled by a reindeer for the smallfolk to see them, seated with their father and mother. it is not done before then, as it is very very cold and the baby cannot risk being sick.
special days:
seitseman yota: celebrated roughly seven weeks ahead of the approximate harvest being picked. it is traditionally a day of full sledge riding, with the belief that the further you ride with your sleigh not getting stuck, the better the year’s crops will be. there is also a competition for who can make the most sour berry jam.
sadonkorjuun aatto: the eve before the harvest is to be picked, those who practice old ancient magic bless the crops before the sun rises again. here, they are accompanied by their female relatives who are children; also dressed in white furs. they offer a prayer for your crops, believed to be magic, pulling on the power of the sun - in exchange for a fruit of some sort.

What's your favorite book?
In the ACOTAR series? None. They're all mostly bad in their own way. But probably TAR?
the best romance
peak Feyre
Moment Nesta became the best character by having the only natural character reveal/plot twist
peak Lucien
Amarantha has a better villain motivation (Clythia n Jurian) than KoH
best Fae (Alis, the bogge, the Attor, the winged summer Fae, the puca, the naga etc)
Everyone was at max potential
the cast chemistry was good cause Alis and Lucien weren't up Feyre's ass the second they met her even tho they knew or hoped she would end up with Tam, it built up naturally and individually
Favourite books in general? Idk but books I look back and remember enjoying:
Honourable mention is The Story of Old by Chelsea Starling, which I recently read for review. You can find my review on Goodreads
Patrick Ness' The Knife of Never Letting Go (series)
I haven't reread it since I was a kid so I can't give a current, more updated review but it's about a rural planet colony where a virus killed all the women and made everyone's (including animals) thoughts audible and visible to one another, called Noise. The MC is Todd - the last boy born in the colony who's set to become a man around his 13th or 14th birthday when he discovers an impossible spot of silence: a girl.
(now being an adult, that sounds terrifying for that little girl but fortunately Patrick Ness doesn't take it down that route - the story is more of an action adventure)
It's written from the perspective of a child but it's not exactly a children's story, especially later books which tackle things like sexism and even genocide.
Ambrose Parry's The Way of All Flesh
I read about 2 years ago and really enjoyed.
It's historical fiction set in Edinburgh in 1847 at the dawn of modern medicine particularly around gynecology and anesthesia. With elements of a murder mystery as young women keep being found dead all around the city.
It follows Will, a poor young apprentice doctor to Dr Simpson, and Dr Simpson's housemaid, Sarah, whose gender limits her station despite how clever she is.
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
Unfortunately I'm not much of a fan of Sanderson after trying to read the Way of Kings but before that I read Warbreaker and I enjoyed it - though apparently most of his fans don't
The story follows two sisters, Vivenna - the oldest, set to inherit her kingdom - and Siri - sent to marry the terrifying God King of their enemy kingdom. Vivenna, usually so obidient, sets off to save her wild little sister.
The story also follows Lightsong, a reincarnated God bored with life and Vasher, a hobo Dilf wizard with a talking murderous sword.
The magic system is called Breath and is really interesting. Each human is born with one but you can give yours away or get more from others and the more you have the more you can do.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (book 1)
I'm a little hesitant to put this because I never like recommending horror or generally disturbing content even if I love consuming it - plus I don't know if I really liked the book even though I have reread it. I like the concepts.
The book follows a girl named Alex Stern who is a high school drop out but gets accepted into Yale to be part of a secret society centred around magic.
Ghosts in this world are called Grays and are generally harmless and invisible to most people even those who practice magic but Alex can not only see them but touch them. Unfortunately that means they can touch her too - something that has made her life very difficult.
We follow her through her 1st and 2nd semester as individual timelines to figure out what happened between her coming to the school and her mentor going missing.
I will say the book has major flaws in character development and use outside of the main 1 or 2. The villain reveal at the end was absolute garbage that has maybe the worst monologuing since Alis in acotar.
Trigger Warnings for the book should include gore, racism, rape - including gang rape and child rape, drug use, murder and someone being forced to eat human feces

The rest of the movie is him trying to notify the police but it becomes a “Cat and Mouse” game between the valet and David Tennant. But increasingly gets silly and overall the stuff that is s...

for Brandon’s birthday I wanna get him a James Boggs book and a Marxist feminist book and for the latter I’m thinking the dialectic of sex... would that be insane. I want to get him something that takes up a close reading of Marx when it comes to gender instead of something that I would normally do (social reproductive/fortunes of feminism). Maybe sexual hegemony. Might also get him an antipsych book

- okay so bloom is going to magic school, alfie or some shit, go figure

- dude the magic school looks like the school from the roblox fairy game. Is this what it’s based on?
Sooooo, all in all, the episode was kinda goofy. But considering it’s a kids show, I’ll deal with it. Should I continue doing this?

I could be Max for Halloween since I have this shirt now but nah lol
For a Halloween party I'll be sporting the shirt the girls wear in the newest Always Sunny in Philadelphia, their version of the contest + wine since Brandon wants to wear the OG episode. I think it was the Bogg's Legend? Idk neither of us even like sports

New Members Of The 'You Oughta Be Ashamed' Club!
"Elected officials in a Michigan county gave themselves $65,000 in bonuses using federal coronavirus relief money while cleaning staff and other front-line workers vulnerable to infecting were paid just a few thousand.
The money, described as 'hazard pay,' included $25,000 for Jeremy Root, chairman of the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners.
Two commissioners - John B. Plowman and Brandon Marks - received $10,000 each.
The remaining four commissioners on the board - Marlene Webster, Gregory Brodeur, Gary Holzhausen, and Cindy Garber - each received $5,000 each."
The county board commissioners are all Republican.
MEANWHILE...
"What they didn’t tell the public was that top-level administrators for the county would receive far bigger payments -- up to $25,000 each -- than front-line workers who were directly exposed to coronavirus as they cleaned buildings and provided vaccines to residents.....
The breakdown written by County Coordinator Brian Boggs shows employees identified as “cleaning staff” received $2,000 each and all other employees received $1,000."
