everytime i post about university it is a call for help

#insert mami ya no quiero ir a la universidad meme #i cant keep on doing this i dont know how to motivate myself to do this #i think its the mix between having to study and knowing im gonna do terrible in the exam #and knowing im gonna have to suffer the entire summer w my mom. like the entire prospect of that is just. so below ideal #its the same thing every year but every time i have to get my stuff out of my dorm room and move out it comes along w a mini mental breakdo #breakdown* #of like. being SO uncertain about my future. bc here i have a set routine where i either go to class or sleep in #and on weekend i just sleep in. meanwhile in the summer its like. i have to come up w a routine every yr #to pretend that im actually doing something. and this yr its worse bc i dont have the 'im studying' excuse #like last yr me subía a uesca somedays to study at the academy and i could spend it outside of my house #while actually being productive yknow. it was a pretty sweet deal even if it couldve been way better #but now. my future is so uncertain for the summer and also for just. the next school yr (in the dorms) #bc i dont like how things are shaping up to be so far (this VERY ANNOYING girl is once again gonna be there) #(and my co-workers are gonna be the same ones. and they do fuck all so ive had to pull more weight than i shouldve this yr #all while the 'boss' didnt really call their attention that much either) #(and it was either i do the things or the dorms kinda stop working as they should) #xarraire #ta esborrar

It was a normal routine on the Nemesis. Soundwave was doing some work, Starscream was probably plotting something to overthrow Megatron, Shockwave was just in his lab doing who knows what, Knockout and Breakdown were prob making out in the medbay, Dreadwing was walking around the Nemesis, Predaking was just planning to kill Starscream, Airachnid? Idfk. And Megatron was prob smoking dark energon in his berth

Just then, Soundwave picked up a signal of a pod that had crash on earth. Megatron sent Starscream and Knockout to go check it out, seeing the two come back with a pod full of sparklings.

wuh oh.

Megatron:

-is kinda disappointed bc he thought there’d be something useful inside, although new sparklings means new soldiers, so it wasn’t that bad.

-he quickly ordered knockout and breakdown to check up the little ones tand wanted results soon after. (He wanted to know if they were in good condition for fighting in the future)

-he’d probably order some vehicons to make some type of room to care for the sparklings. And yes he’d keep them. Why? Well, not only does he want them for the future, but there’s a war happening. He doesn’t want anything to happen to them☹️

-after some time the sparklings had arrived he saw one all alone just in the halls of the Nemesis. He was confused, but he just picked up the thing and as soon as he did it beeped at him, smiling afterwards and started to play with his digits.

-after that encounter let’s just say there would be atleast a couple of sparklings taken by the warlord. (He wants to tell them stories of cybertron and his past)

-sometimes you could catch him holding a sparkling or two while ordering some vehicons to do stuff. (He doesn’t scream at them though, they’re lucky a sparkling is near💀)

Starscream:

-he hated them. Hate hate hate hate.

-why? One of them spat on him 💀

-at first he thinks they’re gross and useless. Like, he doesn’t want gross babies around the ship during a war.

-sometimes when he’s ordered to take care of some he’d make some vehicons (Steve) to take care of them instead. He doesn’t have time for gross creatures.

-one day Starscream saw one of the sparklings in his berth, it was left by Steve(he still loves the sparklings, he just got tired of Starscreams bs)

-this specific sparkling was one that was able to at least mutter some things out. So next thing you know, Starscream is telling the sparkling to repeat after him💀

“Repeat after me, little one. ‘Lord starscream’” The sparkling just babbled and giggled at him while he huffed in slight annoyance.

-after that he’d still atleast a couple of sparklings from others just to teach them words like, “lord Starscream” or “master Starscream.” He wants them to know he’s gonna be the lord one day😭

-the more he took them the more they grew to him. Sometimes he’d just take some just bc he wants something to snuggle with after getting his aft kicked by Megatron.

Knockout:

-same reaction as Starscream. But he doesn’t hate hate them, he’s just a little grossed out bc they’re babies (he was rlly grossed out when one spat on Starscream, but it was funny)

-When Megatron ordered him and Breakdown to take care of some he instantly gave them to Breakdown. He doesn’t want anything happening to his paint🙄

-after a while, Breakdown eventually made Knockout to hold one. As soon as Breakdown gently gave it to Knockout, it snuggled into his chassis and smiled up at him. His spark ached. It wasn’t so anything disgusting, it was just snuggling with him.

Sparkling cooing at him with a smile while Knockout started processing his thoughts.

“Hm. You’re cuter and more behaved than I thought..” He mumbled.

-after that the more Megatron would order him and Breakdown to take care of them he is more than happy to. He loves them now. He wouldn’t steal them since he sees them everyday. (They’re babies wondering on a war ship, they’re gonna get hurt🤷🏻‍♀️)

-he’d tell them stories of his races, sometimes he’d lie and say he’d win the races he’s actually lost at💀 he’d also rant to them about drama stories or horror movies he’s watched at the drive in theaters, in return he’d get some giggles and babbles and he loved it<3

Breakdown:

-he LOVES them.

-at first though he was confused, and a little scared. He didn’t wanna step on any of them, they’re so small he has to make sure of his surroundings 😢

-when Megatron first ordered him and Knockout to take care of them he was excited, still nervous tho. When Knockout gave all of them to him he was ecstatic.

-he’d play with them, show them around the Medbay, make them laugh, like omfg he can do this with our babies too ykyk. (IM JPJPJPJP. maybe.)😓

-he loves talking to them, he just says random things and they just listen closely. He loves Knockout, but it’s good to talk to someone else in the Medbay too yk?

-He wouldn’t really steal any sparklings since he’d see them everyday either way. (Again, Babies on a war ship.) He loves them very much even if he’s able to crush them☺️

Soundwave:

-he was a little confused, why was there sparklings just in a random pod? Could they all have a carrier? What’s happening.

-he honestly didn’t mind tho since there’s a war happening and sparklings cannot survive in war conditions.

-when Megatron first ordered him to take of some he was more than willing to.

Sparklings giggling while they’re in his tentacles as he works-

-ok. Yeah. He doesn’t know the best way to take care of them, so he just lets them rest in his tentacles while he does work.

-but he’d eventually do more like flash them smiley faces on his visor, play some shows like MLP. (Megatron was caught watching MLP with them once-) and he’d even let them mess with laserbeak. He’s pretty gentle with them, he’s just gotta do work to ykyk.

-when some can’t sleep he’d walk around the Nemesis with one and let them hear recordings he’s taken to make them sleep in his arms. (He’d play like lullabies🥹)

Shockwave:

-he thought it was illogical they were there. I mean, war times, hello????

-he didn’t gaf abt their presence. He’s busy in his lab doing stuff (to me) Jk!!

-But when the day Megatron ordered him to at least take care of one he acted differently towards the little ones.

Sparkling just watching him work, “what is it that your optics are looking at..?” Shockwave asked, the sparkling just giggled at him. Making his spark ache a bit, all he said was, “illogical answer.” 💀

-honestly, it’s nice having someone else in the lab other than himself. Sometimes he’d get to show them how some projects work and see the little reactions he gets from the sparkling(s) (dw the projects r like safer ones)

-he’d make them little stuff too in case they ever get bored while he works. And he’d make little goggles for their optics in case of danger.

-Although, it’ll take him a while to act like this to them. He’s not used to acting so differently around others, especially sparklings. (It’s been a while, give him a lil break-) But he’ll definitely warm up to them dw<3

Dreadwing:

-MY NUMBER 1😍😍😍😍😍

-at first he felt awful. Seeing little sparklings in a pod during war ached his spark. He was like one of the only Decepticons on the ship that still had some good in him.

-when Megatron ordered him to take care of some he did so right away. Not just bc he was loyal to Megatron, bc he wanted to actually care for them.

Sparkling(s) just sleeping in his arm while snoring softly. “I’ll protect you no matter what..” Dreadwing mumbled.

-love this man.😢

-he doesn’t want them to go through anything, especially after the loss of his twin brother. Losing him was enough, losing these sparklings who haven’t even gone through much of life yet would hurt his spark even more.

-he’d cradle them, cuddle, literally anything that’s good. He’d take them from Starscream tbh, he doesn’t want Starscream rotting their brains with dumb bs.

-He’d also take some from others when they’re not looking bc he loves them sm.

-sometimes you could catch him under a pile of them while just smiling or chuckling. (Ima marry this man omfg. HES ALIVE TO ME.😒)

Predaking:

-confused. What’s a sparkling?

-when he’s told what they are he’s a little scared of them. He’s like a cat scared of a little puppy. 😭

-but when Megatron assigned him to take one he instantly warmed up.

Sparkling crawling around and Predaking in his alt just sniffing it. Once the sparkling sneezed he flinched a bit but he loved its small cute beep sound. “You’re mine now.”

-he’d carry some almost everywhere. He’d also give them little ride when he’s in his alt mode. Like he’d let them hop on from his wings and like fly around, not to high though. He’d fly like the perfect height for them.

-you could also catch this dude stealing some sparklings, ending up with him behind buried in them while he rests in his alt.

-he’d especially take some from Starscream and teach them to say nasty things abt him. He’d growl at anyone (mainly Starscream) who tries stealing one from himself.

Airachnid:

-HATES THEM.

-literally she is the last Megatron would assigned the sparklings to. ACTUALLY NO. I DONT EVEN THINK HE WOULD ASSIGN ANY TO HER AT ALL. (I’m sorry Airachnid lovers, it’s the truth tho)

-if she even had the chance she’d probably just leave them. Or fucking eat it.

-although if she’s in her era where she spares the sparklings then she’d probably just feed them and that’s it. Like nothing else.

“Hm. Take this cube, young one.” She said, then walking away from the sparkling who had a confused face.

-other than that they’re dead. She’s eating them for dinner.

Im being mentally ill sorry chat

I need to kill myself at this point because I'm never going to get better in any way shape or form. I cant eat healthy because I get fucking weird about it. And I'd be okay with it because frankly I don't care if I make myself sick but at the same time I'm scared I'll die at 40 from heart failure because starvation kills your organs and your heart. But I'd not eat healthy in the first place so would it even matter. I hate that I can't say that I wish I was skinny because that means I'm scum of the earth bc i hate fat people even though I dont I just hate myself and everything to do with me because I'll never be enough for myself because I have crippling dysmorphia that makes me want to kill myself. I can'tlook at myself in the mirror i cant look at photos of myself because i hate my body so bad but i cant change it because i keep fucking eating i need to stop fucking eating i need to start counting calories again if i ever want to be skinny and get surgey god its such a long way to go to be skinny i wish i was underweight i wish i hhadnt gained 25kilos over the span of 3 years i need to kill myself because its all my fault its my fault i cant eat or work out properly or be healthy about it because im too depressed to cook for myself and im addicted to sugar and i have no energy or motivation to do things ever. What if its my fuckibg meds that raise my weight so much what if i went off them what if i stop taking them and eventually kill myself because being dead is bettef than being fat right thats what rhe doctors probably want you to beliebe. I look soooo normal on the outside im like smiling and laughing and i looknormal and happy to other people because i have nothing to prove to them for me beung sick beside them knowing i take meds and me joking about being suicidal. I dont have lost weight nor any scars to show them . God i wish i had the courage to cut my arm up so bad i had to get stitches but i cant because i lovr my mom and my mom loves me toi much and i dont want to worry her i already am terrifued of her seeing the small scars on my thighs . I cant even tell if cutting helps because it gives a nice adrenaline rush but then itd over and i feel guilty bc itll leavw scars that people can see i wish people didnt care aboyt scars i wish they healed and disappeared faster so i wouldnt havw to hide them but i also want them to see because i feel like its the only way i could prove to them that im ill and not just joking about it. I need to starve mtself and get skinny because theb maybe someobe will tell me im pretty because ill finally wear pretty clothes and i need to get rid of my tits and i need ro lose the weight for that abd im so scared i wont be able to . Its only 10 kilos it shouldnt be so scary to lose but i lost 5 in dec/january so before i even went to thw gym and now ibe lost nothing in 2 montjs and its so scary i hatw it i hate that im mentally il i hate that ik not ill enough for anyone to care . fine, then!!! you enabled me. 5 months later, but i finally finished outlining this. my take on xai bau's origin story.

if you’ve heard me talk about how I would restructure lok, then you know I find the red lotus conflict to be by far the most compelling antagonistic force in the series. (the equalist movement is poorly handled and thematically hollow, the raava/vaatu conflict is contrived and theologically simplistic, and kuvira just doesn’t really make sense?) that’s why I think a prequel to lok (especially the far superior version of lok that lives in my head) would necessarily be the origin story of the red lotus, centering on xai bau himself. 

I’ve talked before about how I think the most compelling antagonist in xai bau’s journey would not be aang (although he’s certainly up there, just by virtue of being the avatar), but sokka. as a fellow member of the white lotus, I think xai bau would start off idolizing sokka somewhat, and look up to him as an aspirational figure. but he’d also take issue with a lot of other members of the white lotus, namely iroh, and sokka’s camaraderie with the dragon of the west would lay the foundation for xai bau’s disillusionment, similarly to how ming hua first loses faith in katara upon learning of her partnership with zuko. xai bau gradually goes from seeing sokka as a brilliant balance-bringer and his comrade to seeing him as a ruthless machinator who has the unique and terrifying power of bringing the world to its knees without breaking a sweat (sort of like jianzhu, but even more powerful, because he effortlessly has every world leader in his pocket). 

and xai bau isn’t necessarily wrong in his assessment of sokka’s power: he does have the unconditional trust of every world leader, and he has been known to take that for granted (mostly because he doesn’t actually see them as Important World Leaders, but rather, friends and family). xai bau can’t help but rankle at his steely pragmatism, his condescension towards those he deems intellectually inferior (which is a lot of people, but namely king kuei), and his general air of grouchiness (especially when someone he considers stupid tries to question his ideas). without knowing sokka, truly seeing his kind heart and selfless intentions, it can be easy to assume he’s just a calculating control freak who wants to inflict his will upon the entire world from the shadows. and the more sokka says all the right things to mitigate xai bau’s concerns, the more xai bau is convinced that he’s manipulating him, a schemer with a perfect mask. so he devises a plan. 

i really liked that the dawn of yangchen employed a consistently shifting pov, since it allowed for the reader to understand the motivation of multiple characters who were often at odds with one another. that said, i would structure this hypothetical novel with a less linear chronology (no surprise there if u know me at all lol), by splitting it into three distinct parts: the first being xai bau’s growing disillusionment with the white lotus, penning his manifesto and gathering support in secret, and his plan to assassinate sokka; the second shifting to sokka’s perspective of the same events, how he keeps tabs on xai bau while simultaneously trying to conceal the danger he is in from those closest to him, and finally confronting xai bau about the whole thing; and then the third part returning to xai bau’s pov once he has been apprehended and is taken to kyoshi island to live out his days doing community service under the supervision of the kyoshi warriors. maybe there’s an epilogue from someone else’s pov, like zaheer or ming hua, being radicalized by his manifesto. 

as for a more granular breakdown of the plot, i’ve written up a more thorough outline under the cut. 

PART I – XAI BAU 

childhood: xai bau discovering his parents’ white lotus robes and learning that his family has an entire history of being part of the white lotus spanning centuries, and wanting nothing more than to someday continue that legacy. 

initiation: his parents died in the war, but they were highly regarded members, for which admiration and condolences are expressed by senior members; since he’s the new youngest member besides sokka, sokka decides to take him under his wing, and gets to know him while playing pai sho (it proves a very challenging game, as they are both excellent players). 

membership: xai bau learning more about the individual members of the white lotus, especially emphasizing the ones he dislikes, both for their histories (eg iroh) and their opinions (eg pakku). he’s quickly realizing that this isn’t a place where everyone agrees as he was hoping it would be. unfortunately there are just as many wrong and stupid people here as there are across the rest of the world. 

befriending sokka: at first, xai bau really admires sokka. he’s only a few years older, but xai bau regards him as something of a mentor nonetheless. he thinks it’s so cool that this young nonbender has made such a name for himself through his intelligence alone. and he likes that sokka isn’t afraid to criticize people in positions of authority.

observing sokka: they tend not to talk about their personal lives. sokka only ever wants to talk politics, science, art, philosophy, and xai bau respects that, happily engaging in good-natured intellectual debates with him. but then xai bau walks in on him playing pai sho with iroh one day, and happens to overhear their conversation. they’re talking about the avatar and the firelord as if they’re children who need to be nannied. it disturbs him to his core. 

suspecting sokka: xai bau wants to brush off what they said as a joke, but it nags at him. the white lotus were never meant to be puppeteers of power. he starts asking sokka more personal questions, getting more and more suspicious when sokka brushes him off with flippant jokes. he just wants reassurance that he hasn’t been putting his faith in a villain, but the more he uncovers the more sick he feels. 

stalking sokka: it becomes an obsession. xai bau starts tracking sokka closely, witnessing his interactions with world leaders. the white lotus isn’t supposed to be besties with the avatar. they aren’t supposed to advise the earth king and firelord and water tribe chiefs—and certainly not at the same time. they may keep those powers in check, but they don’t control them. this man has manipulated the entire world into following him, and xai bau is disgusted with himself to think that he fell for it too. 

the first attempt: xai bau decides that for the good of the world, sokka must die. but he also knows that this murder cannot be traced back to him under any circumstances. he finds an ex-yuyan archer who has nothing to lose and hires him to take sokka out. xai bau takes it as a good sign when the man doesn’t return, only to see sokka at the next white lotus meeting with nary a scratch. 

the second attempt: xai bau decides he must take matters into his own hands. he follows sokka into the jasmine dragon and slips poison in his tea. he watches from across the room as sokka sits with toph and iroh, taking small sips of his tea every few minutes. but when iroh gets up to go greet new customers, sokka turns to toph and is like “don’t tell iroh, but i think there’s something wrong with this tea. i’ve only been pretending to drink it to be polite.” xai bau then watches in horror as sokka takes his cup, dumps its contents outside and returns, complimenting iroh on his tea. 

the third attempt: xai bau hires pirates to kill sokka, promising them that they can keep his sword if they’re successful. but of course, they aren’t. 

meeting june: xai bau happens across a woman who can track anything and take down anyone. this gives him an idea. 

june’s agreement: she says she’s down to capture sokka for a large enough sum. besides, she’s known that guy for a while, and he’s always been an asshole and a nuisance. she says she doesn’t kill people, but that she doesn’t mind capturing someone and then looking the other way if that’s what xai bau intends to do. 

the prisoner: xai bau gets a message that sokka has been captured, and to meet them at a location on the very outskirts of ba sing se. he enters the abandoned, dilapidated shack, and sees the bounty hunter sitting at a table with a drink in her hand while sokka sits across from her, tied to a chair. she assures xai bau that sokka’s been immobilized by nylah’s tongue, and pours him a drink. they clink glasses in celebration of their mission being almost over. 

the confrontation: the second xai bau finishes his drink, he can feel his limbs go numb as he flops to the ground. sokka easily unties himself from the chair and ties xai bau instead, using some extremely advanced knots just to be safe. xai bau can’t speak because the poison hasn’t worn off. june is sitting in the corner sipping her (unpoisoned) drink. sokka patiently waits until xai bau can form words again before saying, “i just want to know why.” 

PART II – SOKKA 

a botched attempt: sokka is walking through the city when he nearly gets struck by an arrow. he barely manages to deflect it with his boomerang. he throws his boomerang in the direction the arrow came from, and then ducks behind a building to take shelter as another arrow whizzes past him. when the third arrow doesn’t come, he assumes he’s hit his target, and follows the trail to where the former yuyan archer is knocked unconscious. 

a confidant: sokka confesses to suki that he thinks someone is making a concerted attempt on his life, and he has a suspicion as to whom. suki immediately suggests bringing in the gaang, but sokka doesn’t want anyone else to know, especially not their friends, and makes her swear not to tell anyone. 

an argument: sokka goes to the fire nation to advise the firelord in an official capacity. zuko expresses his concerns with sokka’s disposition (he seems... off. like, worse than usual). sokka assures him that he is simply dealing with a personal issue and for him not to worry. of course, this worries zuko further, as why is sokka implying that zuko shouldn’t be allowed to help sokka with a personal matter if he wants to? this annoys sokka, and he decides not to visit zuko or katara any more until this matter has been dealt with, and that if he does see happen to see aang and/or toph, he will not tell them anything that could concern them. 

a meeting: sokka sees xai bau again at the next white lotus meeting, noticing smugly that xai bau is doing little to hide his shock at sokka’s presence. later that night, he replaces xai bau’s white lotus tile with his own. 

an old friend: sokka tells june about the guy who’s trying to kill him. he asks her how she’d like to mess with him for a while. she smiles. he hands her a bag. inside is a single white lotus tile. 

a rendezvous: june tells sokka that she tracked xai bau and his next plan of attack involves pirates. sokka takes the necessary precautions by refusing to leave mai and ty lee’s sides until the pirates have been dealt with. 

a trick: sokka and june agree to initiate the next phase of their plan: she will happen to advertise her skills in front of xai bau “by complete coincidence,” at which point he will hire her services. 

a conversation: xai bau is hurt by june’s supposed betrayal. he had really thought that at least one person in this cruel world was not already in sokka’s pocket. since he has nothing to lose, when sokka asks “why?” he tells him the truth. tells him everything. sokka thoughtfully mulls it over before attempting to defend himself. but xai bau won’t hear it. sokka’s excuses only serve to make him more furious, so sokka decides it’s a fruitless endeavor to attempt to clear his name, and instead asks him if he’s any good at gardening. xai bau’s just like “what?” 

PART III – KYOSHI ISLAND

the arrival: xai bau, disgraced and devastated by the revelation that sokka was playing him the whole time, has no choice but to go with sokka to kyoshi island. 

the welcome: xai bau arrives on kyoshi island, welcomed by a friendly and bubbly ty lee. he then meets suki, who is far less inviting. 

the tour: suki teaches xai bau about kyoshi island agriculture and supervises his community service work while bullying him relentlessly. 

the coquette: his first few weeks in the village, xai bau, unsurprisingly, attempts to get to know ty lee better. he ends up spilling his entire life story to her, only to later realize he still knows absolutely nothing about her. 

the avatar: three months later, aang visits kyoshi island. it’s a surprise visit, so the kyoshi warriors have done little to prepare for his arrival. he meets xai bau, only vaguely recognizing him from their previous meetings amongst the white lotus. he assumes that xai bau is a friend of suki's, since suki refuses to say otherwise. with aang completely oblivious to xai bau’s true identity, they engage in a thoughtful, intellectual discussion over the spiritual and political role of the avatar in the world. they both come away from the conversation appreciating the other despite their (frankly, minimal) differences in ideology. 

the friend group: it’s been a couple years since xai bau was first brought to kyoshi island, and he has settled into a comfortable routine here. he’s gradually been given more freedom around the village, once it’s made apparent that he’s not a threat to anyone there. in fact, he very much approves of their equal, joyful, communal way of life, and other than his distaste for the avatar as a sociopolitical figure, he appreciates and enjoys the kyoshi island lifestyle. then, the entire gaang arrives. it is then that he first meets katara. 

the dream girl: since katara has never taken much interest in the affairs of the white lotus, and knows absolutely nothing about xai bau’s attempts on her brother’s life, she is completely unaware as to who he is, assuming him to be a native of suki’s village. xai bau thinks that she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, and after hearing her scold sokka, he decides right then and there that she is the love of his life. 

the romance: xai bau does everything in his power to get katara to notice him, and soon enough she does. she can’t help but find him charming: he’s tall, he’s intelligent, his parents died in the war, he’s a communist – he’s everything she looks for in a man. they sit on the beach at night after everyone has gone to bed and talk until sunrise. 

the rejection (katara’s pov): katara knows that sokka is immediately suspicious of any man katara likes, but this time he’s adamant that xai bau is no good. he deliberately neglects to mention why he dislikes xai bau so much, instead he’s just like “katara, trust me, you would not like this guy, don’t ask how i know just please trust me when i say that he’s bad news.” but katara is just like “ok liberal.” eventually it isn’t any of sokka’s cryptic warnings, but witnessing suki mercilessly eviscerate him; seeing him so thoroughly emasculated gives her the ick. she kindly tells him that she doesn’t think it’ll work between them, but that she hopes they can still be friends. 

the reality: xai bau is devastated that the world’s most perfect woman rejected him, and then he realizes that a relationship with sokka’s sister would’ve never actually worked out anyway. sokka says as much, asks him what the hell he was thinking. xai bau admits honestly that he wasn’t thinking, he just saw katara and all reason flew out the window. sokka warns him that if katara ever knew what he did, what he tried to do, she would drown him where he stood. xai bau asks sokka why none of his friends and family (with the exception of suki) seem to know who he is. sokka just laughs. 

EPILOGUE: zaheer reading xai bau’s manifesto.

additional notes: 

each chapter begins with “a selected quote” from xai bau’s red lotus manifesto. this provides the most insight into the nature of his writing. the quotes are selected in terms of thematic application to each chapter. 

xai bau grew up in the fire nation colonies. his parents were earth kingdom revolutionaries who died fighting against their occupiers a year prior to the war’s end. xai bau has always felt that the firelord and the avatar never quite did enough to decolonize the fire nation. 

in parts 1&2, sokka is 25 and xai bau is 22. in part 3 after the timeskip, xai bau is 24 and katara is 25. 

sokka is initiated into the white lotus within a year after the war's end. he is one of the youngest members in its history.

their game of pai sho in the second chapter illustrates sokka’s strategy for their broader dynamic: lose the first round, and then use the information about their gameplay he accrued to beat them every time afterwards. making them feel like they’ve won is the easiest way to predict what they’ll do next. 

xai bau believes that power should be in the hands of the people and therefore does not believe in sovereigns or the power the avatar wields, but he does like aang and katara as individuals. he also respects suki, despite the fact that her boyfriend is his nemesis and she blatantly hates his guts. that said, he thinks zuko and toph are huge simps and cannot stand them. 

xai bau writes his manifesto across the course of his life, and despite never leaving kyoshi island, it manages to disperse to every corner of the globe. aang and katata both get their hands on a copy and find it very interesting. there’s no mention of sokka’s name anywhere in the text, so he decides that it’s harmless enough and doesn’t try to halt its production. 

yes, katara is single at age 25 when she meets xai bau. [holds gun to your head] don’t question it. 

I know that I previously said that fc yee would kill a novel like this, but I want to make it clear that this is not how I think he would write and structure it. he is very much a genre writer, and each of his avatar novels has followed the same classical structure of a typical piece of genre fiction, with protagonists and antagonists, rising action, and a defined climax in the third act. that’s not actually an example of the novels I typically enjoy most, nor the ones I want to write. think of this perhaps closer to a novel like notes from underground, which uses its first part to establish the narrator’s psyche, and the second part to entirely reframe his philosophy by showing it in action. similarly, this story would establish a typical conflict for a protagonist and his antagonist, then flip it on its head by making the previous “antagonist” the “protagonist” and showing how everything our previous pov character thought he knew was wrong, and then going back to his pov after he has failed, and finally, watching him adjust to a completely different lifestyle, with entirely different challenges, eschewing the previous establishment of this as a spy novel entirely. my house my rules baby!!!

well well. firstly, it looks like we're now mutuals so joke's on you! and secondly, a shock even to myself, but as it turns out... that is not a stretch at all. i've got you! 💚

"Are you alright in here?"

"Why do you care?"

"Because," England remarks, stepping into the men's bathroom, where Romano has decided to hide himself away during the lunchtime interval, "you're sitting on the floor of an empty bathroom, and I'd reckon that a person has to be in a pretty bad way to want to get that close to invisible piss stains."

The Italian has to fight back a smile—though, for a good few seconds, it wins and the other nation is able to peer through the cracks. Lorenzo isn't thrilled about it, but… well, he daren't say it aloud, but England is quite right: bathrooms are fucking disgusting. Right now, he sits by the sinks, back against the wall, empty cubicle to his left. His knees are up, close, and act as rests for his wrists as he seriously questions his sanity.

"At least I'm not sitting by the urinals," he quips back, nevertheless, filling a needy silence.

"Still, could've taken a seat on the toilet lid," Arthur returns.

"There… isn't one."

"…ah. I see your predicament."

"Why are you here, huh? Did Germany tell you to round up all the trouble-makers or something?" Lorenzo questions.

Arthur merely scoffs. "I'm not his lapdog—

"Mmh, he has a few of those…"

"—and to be frank, I'm sure I'm a permanent resident of his 'naughty list'," the Brit concludes, humoured all the same. "Yeah… No, the reason I'm here is because this is actually where I like to mope about. Though, the toilet used to be better equipped for, uh, mini breakdowns."

Lorenzo has a mini panic. "I'm not having a breakdo—!"

"I'm not saying you are," the other hurries to defend. "But again, I draw your attention to the potential piss tracked across the floor by someone's shoes."

Lorenzo says nothing.

Arthur says, "Are you sure you're okay?"

And Lorenzo asks him again, "Why do you care?"

A slow sigh comes from the other. All humour seems to have left him, and he steps towards the other nation—and not only towards, but he also comes down by Lorenzo's side, much to the Italian's bewilderment, and sits on floor next to him. Piss stains and all.

"Would it help if I said I'm here on behalf of a… an interested party…?" the blonde remarks, which does no favours for Lorenzo's mood.

"Feli?"

Arthur shakes his head.

"Toni?"

Another shake. Lorenzo shifts a little, and reloads.

"Alfred?"

But still, no.

"Matthew?"

Apparently not!

"Cazzo, it isn't Gilbert, is it?" he questions, landing on the only other person he could think of who may possibly give a shit. But when Arthur shakes his head again, all he can do is slam his head back against marble tiles in defeat.

"It shouldn't really matter who it is," Arthur goes on to tell him in the meantime. "The point is, someone wants to make sure you're okay."

The brunette wants to reply. He wants to shout, I'm fine, now leave me the fuck alone already! but he can't. Maybe that's because it would be a lie. But Enzo, he chides himself, lying never usually bothers you, which is the truth. Lying rarely ever bothers him. So why… why… is he struggling to look Arthur in the face and say it? Say those two words?

I'm fine.

If it were him, walking into a bathroom and finding England sitting on the floor looking more miserable than usual, he'd chalk it up to an argument with France and join in on some spontaneous slandering. But he wouldn't ask him, are you okay? Would he? Would he…?

Romano casts his eyes back away from the other nation before he starts becoming too obvious. His 'deep thinking' face is quite distinctive, appare—

"You don't have to be okay, you know."

His eyes almostly instantly find Arthur again. "You think I don't know that?" he asks, brow raised along with his walls.

"I think you don't believe it," the other says, however. "Knowing and believing are different things. It took me a long time to work that one out…"

"I didn't ask for private lessons in living."

Arthur manages a feeble smile. "Right. Sorry."

And Lorenzo knows almost instantly that he has over-stepped, crossed a line, crushed something underneath his clumsy foot. He doesn't feel the urge often, but before he can really think about it, he huffs and says, "No, no, I'm sorry. I'm sorry… You're only trying to help…"

"No need to apologise. I am the one being incredibly nosy."

"Yeah, well… I guess I am only used to it from certain people," the Italian muses. He regards Arthur with solemnity. "You want to know if I'm okay?"

It takes him a moment, but the other nods his head. Lorenzo gives him what he wants:

"I'm sitting on the floor of a bathroom," he says, "possibly in a puddle of someone's piscio, in a room halfway across the building from where everyone else is, and I really, really don't want to go back." He leans his head back against the wall, but his eyes stay fixed on Arthur. "Does it sound like I am okay?"

"…not really."

"Then there's your answer."

Another nod, another pause.

"Would you like some company?"

Lorenzo frowns. "You, you mean?"

"We're the only ones currently in this bathroom, so… yes."

"Don't you want to go back?"

"What, and let you get away with stealing my hiding place?" the other scoffs. "Fat chance."

And, even though it feels odd—even though it feels like there is more to it, like he's in for an earful or maybe even worse—Lorenzo… doesn't tell him to go. Instead, he hesitates for no more than five seconds before suggesting, defying his own expectations of himself, "Wanna hide in one of the nearby café's instead?"

When Arthur smiles at him, a weight seems to vanish. A worry seems to subside.

"Okay."

How best to Showcase your skills on your website

For this module, I have decided to aim towards a 3D generalist position. Hence why I decided to add multiple different sections to my website showcasing different types of work I am able to do. I believe this is also relevant because as a freshly graduated animation student, most people still don't have a clear idea of which exact role they want to aim towards, and usually need a few years in the industry to develop enough skills and knowledge to become a specialist.

Originally I had my website split into four sections: 3D modelling, Animation (both 3D and 2D), Illustration, and an About Me section. However as brought up in a different blog post, that caused some issues as the 3D modelling section ended up having a lot of work (mainly because in the long run I want to focus on environment building) and required a lot of scrolling. So I ended up separating two big university projects from that section and giving them separate pages.

Reading and researching portfolio websites these are the points that stood out to me:

Create a Clear and Engaging Portfolio: Your portfolio should be the centrepiece of your website. Display your best and most representative work prominently. Organize your portfolio into categories or projects to make it easy for visitors to navigate and explore. Provide clear titles and descriptions for each piece, highlighting the skills and techniques involved.

Use High-Quality Images and Media: Present your work using high-resolution images or videos to ensure that the details and quality of your artwork are accurately represented. Optimize your media files to strike a balance between image quality and website loading speed.

Show Different Styles and Techniques: Demonstrate your versatility as a 3D artist by showcasing a variety of styles, techniques, and subject matter. This will show potential clients that you can adapt to different projects and requirements. Include both personal projects and professional work if possible.

Highlighting Key Projects and Achievements: Showcase any awards, publications, or notable clients you have worked with. This will help establish credibility and expertise. I have tried to place the best work at the top to showcase my most recent pieces and employable qualities.

Provide Context and Descriptions: Accompany each artwork with descriptions that provide context and insight into your creative process. Explain the objectives, challenges, or unique aspects of each project. This will give visitors a deeper understanding of your skills and creative approach. This is something that my website originally was missing, so I added some short descriptions of each image, this could still be improved upon as I was told recruiters are often interested in the behind-the-scenes of an artwork.

Include Progression and Behind-the-Scenes Content: To showcase your skills and expertise further, consider including progression shots, wireframes, or behind-the-scenes content that demonstrates your workflow and problem-solving abilities. This can add an extra level of interest and engagement for visitors.

Update Your Portfolio Regularly: Keep your portfolio up to date by adding new work and removing outdated pieces. Regularly update your website with your latest projects and achievements to demonstrate that you are active and continually improving.

Video Showreels: In addition to images, consider creating a video showreel that showcases the highlights of your work. A well-edited and engaging showreel can provide a dynamic overview of your skills and leave a lasting impression. This is something on my do-to list after all my deadlines are met.

One of the before mentioned points talks about including breakdown materials, which is especially important for environment artists/3D modellers, as knowing how to optimise your work can be a crucial skill for getting hired.

So when creating 3D assets I now try to take more progress screenshots to later include in progress videos, as well as create more breakdown gifs etc.

A progress gif for one of my environment scenes, as well as a wireframe to show the topology and an original sketch idea, all included in my website to show the process not just the final piece.

For the About Me section Jackie liked how personal it felt. I was also told that this is a good place to show your personality, so a sweet backstory and a photo seemed suitable. This page also includes a PDF of my CV.

The Illustration and Animation sections are both pages that I am not very passionate about but it shows a good range of skills that I have as well as an understanding of animation pipelines. I was told that traditional drawing and general art skills are appreciated in the 3D industry as those are the skills that not everyone has, and as someone who has some background and training in academic drawing, I feel confident sharing the work. The only section I am unsure about is the 2D animation section on the animation page as all of it is old work and not something I have any interest in doing. The work itself isn't bad but just seems a bit irrelevant, so this might be a section to be cut out first.
