Her Late Majesty was Patron of @RNLI for 70 years, even meeting them here in St Davids, so it was a pleasure to meet its current crew and some of those supported by the unit, as we remember her today.

Launching lifeboats since 1869, the @RNLI Lifeboat Station here on the spectacular St Davids coastline has a history of heroism among its generations of volunteers.

The most tired thing twitter squaddies do is call Kate old and ugly. It’s really not the read they want it to be because objectively speaking Kate is an attractive woman in her 40’s who looks like she’s in her 40’s and personally I think it’s a bad road to cross when women start criticizing other women for looking their age. So the tweet is a thread from someone who did a tour in London and her tour guide was a former RPO. His name was Dave and he was a RPO for 10 years, eventually became the head of royal security. The last 4 years of his service, he worked with Charles and Camilla, and he spent many summers in Balmoral with The Queen.

Her thread:

Dave used to escort William to bars and nightclubs. He also used to take Will and Kate into town for coffee when they were visiting Balmoral.

Dave was with William the night before his wedding when he did the walkabout. (He's in some of the pictures.) Also the night before William's walkabout, Harry was yelling out of the window at Clarence House yelling at the RPOs and police officers.

After the Cambridge wedding, Will and Kate gave pieces of their wedding cake to staff. Dave still has his slice of cake and it's still very fragrant.

Will and Kate were happy to let the staff, including Dave, hold George when he was a baby. George used to blow kisses at Dave when they saw each other.

Will and Kate took George on walks around Balmoral and dip him in the puddles when it was raining.

There is no aircon in Buckingham so the windows are kept open and everyone could hear the guards walking around on the gravel outside. Philip did not like this and would yell out the window at the guards to stop them walking on gravel.

Philip did not like the big guns the armed police have at the royal residences as he felt they weren't British and those kinds of guns are prohibited in the UK. The guards would turn to hide their guns from Philip when he arrived/passed by.

Dave would let The Queen drive between residences.

On private travel, the royals only take two cars; one for the royal and the other for their staff. This was to allow them be more normal and do regular things, such as Will and Kate on the school run.

Beatrice and Eugenie once invited Dave on a jog, and then invited him to tea after when he was conducting security tests. They were watching television, which ended up being a livestream of The Queen meeting The Pope and it was a surreal moment for Dave.

Dave was on the police detail for Sophie during her engagement to Edward.

Dave believes Harry is easily misguided and manipulated, to the point where Harry would do whatever you told him. Dave says Harry is a nice guy and very British, and it's very sad to see the changes in him.

Dave used to escort Harry to the bars and nightclubs as well and he was a typical 20something.

Dave knows people who worked at the palace when Meghan was around. Meghan is/was described as "difficult to work with."

The tourists "asked Dave about car chases. My exact words were 'was there actually paparazzi car chases as Harry continually describes?' Dave replied 'of course not. Like the NY car chase they were just inching forward."

RPOs follow the royal's lead in dress. Their main job is to fit in, not stick out, so they dress how the royal dresses.

RPOs only protect the BRF physically and not mentally.

Harry always wants protection and is usually denied.

Dave has been to the Ghilles Ball many times and has danced with The Queen twice. Anyone who dances with The Queen had to receive training/dance lessons first.

Philip didn't really have a filter and would often say outdated/un-PC things.

The Queen gave her staff handwritten notes and fruitcake from Fortnum & Mason for Christmas every year. Dave still has all of his notes and all of the fruitcake tins.

As I read, I wanted to put in post-it notes for things I wanted to comment on. I don't remember them now, but it all comes down to the same thing:

Omid Scobie is seething about his loss of importance. When MM came along, his ticket to stardom was in hand. It now lost. All is lost, I say! And he will never stop trying to make everyone pay for his loss of perceived status and access to gossip.

Omid Scobie, who once looked like Omid Scobie, is one to talk about racism. When you spend thousands and thousands of dollar, pain, and time to look as white as can be, you lose your credibility. Well, whatever credibility you might have once had.

Omid Scobie, shut the fuck up about Diana and William. BRFRumor, you nailed it. William actually knew his mother. I am OG Diana. Adored her then, adore her now, will always adore her. That doesn't mean I think she was perfect or an angel. I think she was a woman trying to maneuver her way in the world, a world owned and operated by men, like so many women before her. She was sensitive and she was real. She genuinely cared for people and causes. She genuinely loved her husband and was in way over her head in the situation she married into. She was indeed complex and complicated, and she made some really stupid, nasty mistakes when she was divorcing, as many do. William knows and accepts all of that about her - and still adores her. Harry doesn't even know who his mother was. He adores his idealization of her and he and OS make that out to be Harry and only Harry knowing and loving his mother. Harry would never dream of actually trying to figure out who is mother was. It's all coattails shit with all three of them: H, MM, OS. They want to bask in Diana's reflected glory. Psh. Instead, all they've done is turn all kinds of people against Diana since they insist they are like her. Not one of them is anything like her.

Okay, I've gotten myself so worked up on this last one I can't remember the rest. :) Your ending was brilliant. If only I could remember what it was. :)

Yeah, Scobie's chapter on Diana is an interesting one. It's all over the place so you just want to tell him 'Get to the point, man!'

But I think his point is this: Diana has been the face of the royal brand for so long, whether it's the idealized Diana of her 20s, the global force for change and good in her 30s, her fashion and style, and/or her tragic death) that the Palace no longer wants her there. So they're trying to discredit her to where she no longer "is" the royal brand. It won't work, is Scobie's conclusion because like "her statue's reflection in the palace pond...depending on the light, her true story briefly vanishes but always reappears."

He seems to suggest that it's Harry and Meghan's struggles with the BRF that keeps Diana's true story alive (because they've gone through similar things) in spite of William, Charles, and Camilla.

And for Scobie to believe William thinks there is no place for Diana in his monarchy, it does point to Scobie not having any sources left. Or, as anon points out, making shit up for the drama. Because William's made it clear there's a place for his mother's memory in his future. He just doesn't browbeat us to death with it the way Harry does.
