Is there a social difference between a man having a bastard born before a marriage? And what would happen e.g. if the man brought the (male) bastard up in his home and then later married? How big would the insult to his wife be if he didn't send him away once he's married and has trueborn children?
There’s no real social difference to bastards born before a marriage or during one. They’re both illegitimate, without the grace of wedding vows, born “on the wrong side of the blanket”, from “lust and lies”, etc, all that stigma. A lord’s wife might feel somewhat different about them on a personal level, but general society won’t; though for either type, she would greatly prefer that her husband have nothing to do with them, other than seeing to their general well-being as is right and proper.
In the case of bastards born some time before a marriage, we have at least four examples.
Daemon Sand, the Bastard of Godsgrace, whose father Ryon Allyrion only married Ynys Yronwood recently (they have two toddler-age sons). There the more lenient Dornish attitude towards bastards most likely applies; Daemon was a companion of Princess Arianne Martell in his youth, squired for Oberyn Martell, and accompanied his father to King’s Landing as part of the Martell party, for examples. However, if Ynys is not particularly accepting of Daemon and feels insulted by his presence (especially since the Yronwoods are stony Dornishmen and least influenced by the Rhoynar), we will likely find out in TWOW, as Daemon is part of Arianne’s diplomatic party to meet the pretender Aegon Targaryen.
Rolland Storm, the Bastard of Nightsong, who is presumably at least a little older than his trueborn half-brother Bryce Caron. House Caron has the unusual situation in that most of them were wiped out by illness in Bryce’s childhood – Lord Bryen, his wife, his younger son, and all his daughters – leaving only Bryce and Rolland. If Rolland had been raised elsewhere before Bryen and his wife died – and it is possible he was, as he’s called “a seasoned killer”, therefore, considering Robert’s relatively peaceful reign, it may be he took a turn as an Essosi mercenary or a traveling knight dealing with local lords’ little battles – it doesn’t seem to have affected his and Bryce’s relationship, as they declared for Renly together (Bryce even becoming a Rainbow Guard) and then for Stannis. After Bryce died at the Battle of the Blackwater, Rolland became the pretender lord of Nightsong (the Lannisters granted it to Philip Foote, Bryce’s killer) and castellan of Dragonstone. We’ll just have to see in TWOW what happened to Rolland Storm when Dragonstone was captured by Loras Tyrell, and if we find out more about his history.
Aurane Waters, the Bastard of Driftmark, scion of House Velaryon. Actually, it’s not certain whether Aurane was older or younger than his half-brother Monford Velaryon, who had a 6-year-old son, Monterys, before he died at the Blackwater. But Aurane was evidently raised at least on the island of Driftmark, if not perhaps in Driftmark castle itself, and he sided with the Velaryons when they declared for Stannis. But though young Lord Monterys has remained loyal to Stannis, Aurane surrendered to the Lannisters, becoming a courtier and eventually Master of Ships (Lord Admiral)… until he used his position to have a fleet of great warships built, manned them with criminals, and stole them to set himself up as a pirate king in the Stepstones. Aurane Waters is another where TWOW might give him more background history for us to see.
Mya Stone, eldest bastard daughter of Robert Baratheon. At least we know her history in detail. :)  Mya was born in the Vale when Robert was about 17, still a ward of Jon Arryn. She was taken in by House Royce of the Gates of the Moon (it’s possible her mother was a servant at the Gates, the Arryn winter castle, or living in a village nearby, as it was probably winter when Mya was born), and still works for them as a mule leader. When Robert, disgruntled with Joffrey after the disturbing incident with the cat, mentioned to Cersei that he was thinking about bringing Mya to court, Cersei not-exactly-subtly threatened Mya’s life, so that didn’t happen. Cersei is a little more overt than most lord’s wives would behave – but she did clearly see how much of an insult to Robert’s (nominally) legitimate children bringing Mya to King’s Landing would be, and Robert’s motivations for doing so. (Note: Gendry does not count for purposes of this discussion, even though he was probably born (at the very least, conceived) before Robert’s marriage, because Robert never knew he existed.)
So you can see, as with most things, it depends – but truly, no matter when a bastard is born, their presence is generally an insult to a lord’s legitimate family. That is, unless they’re made servants (Falia Flowers, the Frey bastards) or deniable assets (Tyler Hill, the Frey bastards again) or the legitimate family is dead or lonely (Bryce and Rolland, Domeric Bolton and Ramsay), or other rare exceptions (Jon Snow and other Stark bastards). I hope that helps!

Jaime and Brienne’s betrotheds
I've got a little bit of silly trivia for you. Brienne's three formed betrotheds have all a connection to Jaime. Her first betrothed was Lord Bryen Caron's younger son, who died with his father, mother and sisters before he could marry her. But we met Lord Caron's other son. He lost againt Jaime in the Hand's tourney dedicated to Ned in AGOT. Then, of course, we saw Brienne's second betrothed, Ronnet Connington (the fucking asshole), actually meet Jaime in AFFC...and losing his teeth in the process. Brienne's third betrothed, Ser Humfrey Wagstaff (the old douchebag) was the castellan of House Grandison (seriously Selwyn...a castellan?)...and Jaime joined the KG by taking the place of Ser Grandison himself, after he died in his sleep. Westeros is a small place apparently...or it's simply GRRM being a cheeky man.

tl;dr stoic af who lost his whole fam and made the very healthy life choice of revenge. if you’re not related to Renly Baratheon chances are he will not like you. click here for more
tw for fire & death
The eldest of the five Caron children, Bryce always took his role seriously. Bryen Caron was a former army sergeant and the house mostly ran like clockwork. However, Yolanda had always been the more free spirited type and even though chores were always done at a certain time and they were all well disciplined, it was still a happy upbringing full of love and laughter.
When he was ten his father took a trip to King’s Landing for work and while there finally found a restaurant for sale and fell in love, buying it for his wife. The family moved quickly and settled into their new home with relative ease. From there things got a bit more complicated for the Carons.
Their budding business caught the attention of various mobs in the area, threats and bribes sent their way until Bryen became associated with The Stags. He chose the Baratheons to keep a look out for them and it seemed as though the problem had been solved. The restaurant, Nightsong, increased in popularity and became something of a local hotspot.
School and Bryce never really gelled when it seemed obvious that he was more practically inclined. He stuck in enough to get middling grades and be able to help his siblings with their homework but he knew that further education wasn’t what he wanted.
Instead, his attention turned to his father’s career in the army and he enlisted soon after turning 18. He had barely been deployed in Essos after his training a few days before news from Kings Landing came. The unthinkable had happened and his family were gone. A fire at the restaurant and his parents and four siblings lost to him.
He came home to bury them and set into motion plans to refurbish the restaurant. But it was too painful for him to consider staying in King’s Landing without his family and so he went back to finish his contract.
Coming out of the army at 22, he was hungry for some kind of revenge. He knew that the fire was no accident but with little proof for who was responsible for the foul play, he was left suspecting any faction that wasn’t The Stags.
He initiated without hesitating and hasn’t looked back. He’s highly efficient at what he does and slowly rose through the ranks, even if he has no intention of ever going higher.
Headcanons
He hasn’t set foot in Nightsong since he returned from his tour. Instead he has hired a manager who sends him regular updates. The renovations were done solely through pictures sent back to him. He keeps a sharp eye on the books though, unwilling to let his mother’s dream fail.
While he doesn’t go to his own, Bryce is a big supporter of local restaurants (providing that they have no ties to any big family) as he knows how hard his parents worked on Nightsong. He will usually get his order to go but sometimes he will stay on a quieter night and he always tips an amount that most would consider excessive.
He still cooks for himself sometimes, making the dishes that his mother taught him. But there are a few he cannot bear to make himself and has instead been learning some different recipes over the years.
Personality
One thing that can be said about Bryce is that he treats people equally. At least, with equal distrust, disinterest and distance. There’s only a handful of people he trusts and outside of that he barely attempts civility. It’s rare he gives anything but the shortest sentence possible in a conversation and rarer still that he gives away any information about himself. Exchanges are kept to a minimum and he’s often impatient to get them over quickly. More than a little reticent, exasperation comes to him easily when it comes to casual conversations or people not getting straight to the point. He’s gruff and blunt, having little time for anyone’s sensibilities. Life was never softened from him and so he sees no need to shield anyone from its harsh realities either. As far as he’s concerned, no one in their world is innocent when at the very least they’re guilty for turning a blind eye to illegal dealings, and therefore they know exactly what goes on.
The person he is now is a far cry from the young man he used to be. He was always something of a leader, a focal point for his siblings but now he’s more than happy to simply follow orders. His mother raised him to see the good in people and yet without her he is only able to see the worst. Suspicious of everyone he comes across when a need for revenge has consumed him. Sometimes there’s echos of who he used to be, a stray smile or the way he sometimes pays for a strange’s tab. But he tries to bury such things and remove himself from that person as much as possible. It’s easier to pretend as though the grief doesn’t still eat at him. Easier to achieve numbness. All he really knows is numbness is preferable to anything else he felt in the wake of it all.

Are there any guesses as to how old Allyria Dayne is? Considering she was merely betrothed to Lord Beric in 294 AC (when Beric was about 18 or 19 so it can't be due to his age), and still unmarried by 298 AC, it seems like she'd be on the younger side?
It’s certainly possible that Allyria Dayne is on the younger side, and that Beric Dondarrion was waiting for her to grow a little older before he wedded (and bedded) her. If we suppose that betrothals for highborn Westerosi girls typically happen just before or around their “first flowering”, roughly age 12 or 13, then we might guess that Allyria was born in or around 281 AC, which would make her just shy of 20 in the current novel timeframe. If she were betrothed even younger (not an unknown practice, considering Brienne was betrothed at seven to Bryen Caron’s younger son) and the interested parties were merely waiting, as in the case of Alys Karstark, for her first flowering to have her marry, then she might be even closer in age to her nephew Edric, and only in her early to mid teens right now. It would make a great disparity of age between Allyria and her elder siblings, but this is not in itself unprecedented: Rhaegar was a quarter of a century older than his youngest sibling, while in a more extreme case Stevron Frey was some six decades older than his youngest (half) sibling, Shirei.
At the same time, I find the idea that Allyria has to have been merely too young for marriage, well, rather restricting. After all, age alone is not the only factor that could delay a marriage after a betrothal has been made. Changing political/personal circumstances could just as easily delay a marriage (what I suspect happened to poor Kiera of Tyrosh). A betrothal for an excess Dayne daughter made while Lord Dayne (Edric’s father) was still alive and had every hope of fathering a litter of Dayne heirs of his own might be looked upon very differently if he died not long after, leaving little Edric the new Lord of Starfall. Suddenly Lady Allyria would be (apparently) next in line to lead House Dayne - and just as suddenly, a betrothal to a marcher lord whose House’s founding story celebrates killing Dornishmen might not be so desirable for the heiress presumptive of one of the most prominent Dornish Houses. Betrothals are not always easy things to break, and this might have seemed particularly true when the head of the House of one of the betrothed parties had been living with the other party for years as a sort of surrogate son. Maybe Allyria thought she could play for time, keep delaying until Beric himself gave up, or maybe she thought she could delay until Edric married himself, when she would be farther away from the Dayne succession. I’m not saying any of this is the case, obviously, just that there’s food for thought.
The fact is, though, there is simply not enough information to begin to make more than a vague guess as to how old Allyria is. She is younger than the late Ashara, which puts her birth year at the earliest at 261 AC, and she’s old enough to be betrothed by 294 AC … and that’s about it. In that time range, any birth year is at this moment possible, until and unless we get further clarifying information. My real suspicion is twofold: one, that GRRM didn’t think much about the timeline (not to mention because he can’t math) and instead just decided to give Beric a fiancee from an appropriately tragic family, to make his own tragedy cut that much more deeply; and two, that any information we were supposed to learn about Allyria got lost or reshuffled in the abandonment of the five-year gap that really screwed over House Dayne.

Canon y semicanon Tormentas
Olyver Baratheon: 29 ddn. Señor de Bastión de Tormentas. Mark Ryder.

Full name: Brienne Tarth Years of age: 34 Title / Rank: Kingsgaurd Face claim: Gwendoline Christie
Biography
Born as the eldest daughter to Lord Selwyn Tarth, Lord of Evenfall Hall on Tarth, Brienne is also his only surviving child.Brienne’s mother died when she was young she and as a result of this, she does not remember her and her only older sibling, Galladon, drowned when she was eight and her two younger sisters died in the cradle. Lord Selwyn had tried to find her a match but because of her ugly appearance and attitude he found it to be incredibly difficult. This was made more difficult since Brienne was was bent on a martial life rather than a marital one. Lord Selwyn did find three men willing to marry her if only for his own wealthy lands but the first two fell through. Lord Bryen Caron was the first and they had met once when Brienne was seven and he three years he senior but he had died. The second had been to Ser Ronnet Connington, six years her senior, he broke the betrothal by giving her a rose and stating that would be all she get from him. The last of the men was Ser Humfrey Wagstaff who insisted that she act womanly once they wed. She replied that she would accept that demand only from a man who beat her in combat and although only sixteen, Brienne left Ser Humfrey with a broken betrothal and three broken bones. After that, Lord Selwyn gave up trying to find a match for his only child. When Lord Renly Baratheon visited Tarth during his coming of age tour and danced with Brienne as well as treating her courteously, Brienne fell in love with him and Lord Selwyn hoped to make a match out of it and send her to Storm’s End.
During the War of Five Kings, Brienne joins Renly Baratheon in his march to King’s Landing once he declares himself King. Despite being mocked throughout the camp and having to listen to young knights take bets on who will take her maidenhead, Brienne proves herself to be better than those Knights and the best in the camp. To do this, she takes part in a great melee of 116 Knight at Bitterbridge and even defeats the young knight of the flowers, Ser Loras Tyrell, and for her prize she asks to join the Rainbow Guard, Renly’s version of a Kingsgaurd, and becomes Brienne the Blue. She is by Renly’s side almost all the time due to her loyalty and love for him and her dedication as a member of the guard. Brienne is the only person other than Catelyn Stark that is present when the Shadow attacks Renly, almost killing him. Upon entering the King’s room, it is believed that Brienne made an attempt on Renly’s life and so flees the camp with Catelyn Stark and believes her King to dead. Brienne is furious with Stannis and wants to take revenge for Renly’s death but Catelyn persuades her to be in her service instead to escort Jaime Lannister to King’s Landing to return Sansa and Arya to Winterfell in exchange for the Kingslayer. On their journey to King’s Landing, Jaime and Brienne fight but Jaime cannot beat Brienne who is holding his head underwater when they are captured by the Brave Companions. Brienne witnesses Jaime’s hand getting cut off and his fighting ability gone resulting in him despairing for his life but Brienne is the one to convince him to live for revenge. Jaime, in turn, prevents Brienne’s rape by three men. When they get to Harrenhal, the two share a bath and tales. Roose Bolton sends Jaime on his way and intends to keep Brienne as Vargo Hoat’s prize but the Kingslayer returns for Brienne and rescues her from the bearpit of Harrenhal. After that, they leave for King’s Landing but when they reach it, they are confronted by the Council of Kings and told of the new arrangements of Westeros. Brienne is told that Renly is alive and that Jaime is to be sent to the Wall or death, his choice. Brienne tries to speak for Jaime but it has already been decided and she is told to return to her King since Catelyn Stark is dead.
In the years after the War of Five Kings, Brienne serves Renly in the Kingsguard and vows to protect him and his family including the young prince, Joseph Baratheon. Loras Tyrell, another member of he Rainbow Guard, blames Brienne in part for Renly’s injuries and refuses to forgive her even in the years after the War. Even though she is part of Renly’s kings guard, many of the other knights distrust her still for aiding in the escape of Jaime Lannister and abandoning her king in a time when he needed his knights the most.
Flaws & Virtues
⚫ Quarrelsome, Ruthless, Aggressive ⚫ Loyal, Courageous, Adventurous.
Relationships
Renly Baratheon —  Brienne is loyal to Renly more than she is to anyone else. She has a love for him as well but is more than happy to protect him rather than to marry him.
Catelyn Stark— The news of Catelyn’s death hurt Brienne but strengthened her vow to help bring her daughters home to Winterfell. Now that they are returned, Brienne is glad of it but does not know that Catelyn is Lady Stoneheart.
Loras Tyrell— Loras and Brienne do not get on because he is still bitter that she beat him in the melee and furious that she could not protect Renly. Brienne has no ill feeling to Loras other than believing him to have been a spoilt child and that is why he could not accept that she is a better fighter.

Hello! I'm working on a canon-divergent AU fic, and I was wondering...what are acceptable reasons to break a betrothal in Westeros?
Ummm… mostly we just know unacceptable reasons, really. I mean, it depends what you mean by “acceptable”. Just because one party decides to break the betrothal contract doesn’t necessarily mean the other party’s going to be especially pleased by it. And there’s certainly going to be some social criticism, one way or the other. Also, in our-world medieval times, where these could be the reasons to invalidate a betrothal:
revelation of an existing betrothal or marriage
evidence of infidelity
evidence of infertility
failure to meet the financial or property stipulations of the betrothal contract
The party whose actions invalidated the betrothal generally had to pay some kind of financial penalty. There could even be a suit for breach of promise.
But I can at least give you some reasons for broken betrothals we’ve seen in ASOIAF:
Joffrey Baratheon and Sansa Stark: the treason of Eddard Stark. (“Your Grace, the gods hold betrothal solemn, but your father, King Robert of blessed memory, made this pact before the Starks of Winterfell had revealed their falseness. Their crimes against the realm have freed you from any promise you might have made. So far as the Faith is concerned, there is no valid marriage contract ’twixt you and Sansa Stark.”) Mutual agreement on both sides. (Although Sansa had to make sure she didn’t look like she was pleased by it.) Note that Ned had wanted to break the betrothal based on the revelation of Joffrey’s incestuous parentage, so that would also be a reason to consider a marriage contract invalid.
Robb Stark and Roslin Frey: broken by him, because he married Jeyne Westerling instead. Caused the Freys to desert him, and also eventually the Red Wedding, so y’know… not exactly acceptable there.
Arya Stark and Elmar Frey: broken by the Freys, after Robb married Jeyne; pretty much mutual (Robb was in no position to complain, and Arya never even knew she was betrothed to begin with).
Brienne of Tarth and Ronnet Connington: broken by Ronnet, on meeting her, because he thought she was ugly. No mention of any financial penalties, but certainly the parents were displeased (and Brienne was utterly crushed).
Brienne of Tarth and Humphrey Wagstaff: because she beat him in single combat. Mutual, as he had told her he would expect her to not wear armor, and obey his wishes or be chastised, and she said she’d only allow herself to be chastised by a man who could outfight her. No mention of any financial penalties.
Maegor Targaryen and Rhaena Targaryen: not sure how definite the betrothal actually was (whether it was just proposed or what), but it was broken by the High Septon on the grounds of incest.
Duncan Targaryen and the daughter of Lord Lyonel Baratheon: broken by him, because he married Jenny of Oldstones. Which started a mini-war because of the insult to the Baratheons.
Jaehaerys Targaryen and Celia Tully: broken by him, because he eloped with his sister Shaera. Caused major offense to the Tullys, though it didn’t go as far as war.
Shaera Targaryen and Luthor Tyrell: broken by her, because she eloped with her brother Jaehaerys. Ditto re the Tyrells.
Daeron Targaryen and Olenna Redwyne: broken by him, because he preferred the company of his boyfriend. It’s not said how offended the Redwynes were, but Olenna likes to say she was the one who put an end to the betrothal.
(Also, several betrothals broken by the death of one of the parties before the wedding: Alys Karstark and Daryn Hornwood, Brienne of Tarth and the younger son of Bryen Caron, Robert Baratheon and Lyanna Stark, Catelyn Tully and Brandon Stark, Arianne Martell and Viserys Targaryen, Viserra Targaryen and Lord Manderly, Laena Velaryon and the son of a former Sealord of Braavos, Lucerys Velaryon and Rhaena Targaryen, Jacaerys Velaryon and Baela Targaryen, Tywald Lannister and Ellyn Reyne.)
Oh, and note that according to one rumor, Rhaenyra Targaryen tried to seduce Criston Cole because she hoped if her betrothed Laenor Velaryon found out she was not chaste, he would break their betrothal. (She didn’t want to marry him, as he was gay.) Though whether she was a virgin at her marriage or not, she and Laenor were married anyway.
Anyhow, hope that helps!
