Dirty Girls aired for BTVS season 7, episode 18. This was the return of Faith to BTVS. Willow brought her back from LA after ATS 4x15 Orpheus.

This is the first appearance of Caleb, who would continue to appear in all (4) remaining episodes. Caleb is played by Nathan Fillion. This is also the first time that Faith and Spike meet when they look like themselves. Faith remembers meeting Spike before in S4, but Spike is not aware that he previously met Faith when she looked different. They have memorable conversations in the cemetery and Buffy's house's basement.

(This is also the first time that we see Faith and Dawn interact, but because of the monks they both remember each other from before.)

This episode also includes the only appearance of a Vulcan in the Buffyverse. (The most famous Vulcan is Spock from Star Trek.) As Andrew shares a story we see it as a flashback, with Faith fighting a Vulcan. Andrew thinks Faith killed a Vulcanologist, meaning a person who studies Vulcans. (For some reason in his flashback we see an actual Vulcan including pointy ears. It does not appear to be a person in cosplay.) Actually Faith killed a volcanologist, a person who studies volcanoes. The Potentials correct Andrew on his mistake, but not before Faith gets the upper hand on the Vulcan in his flashback.

OK intense FUFFY thoughts here:

You know that beautiful Spike gifset going around from Dirty Girls, where he's shirtless and lying on his cot and smoking? And he looks very hot? (I'm not immune to Spike or Spuffy.)

And he's talking to Faith and by the last gif she's sitting next to him? You can see her cig for a split second.

You know how Buffy comes down the stairs and is NOT HAPPY with seeing them? The first time you see this you may think "wait, which of them is she jealous of? which of them is she mad at?" Rewatch and see - Buffy is GLARING at Faith, not at Spike. Watch her eyes, she's clearly looking to her left, which would be Faith not Spike.

So I just want to point out that Spike looks like a literal not G-rated fanfic trailer but who is Buffy focused on? FAITH.

Buffy: "Well, it's nice to see you two getting along so well."

Faith: "Yeah. Uh, you just know all the cool vampires." (And then Faith visibly de-sexifies her body language, which was getting a little cozy with Spike.)

Faith responds, not Spike. Either of them could have responded but Spike knows she is saying this to Faith not him.

I get that a "logical" person would say it makes sense that Buffy is mad at Faith, because Faith is newer at the redemption thing and back in town for a few hours at this point. (Compared to Spike.)

But my FUFFY brain thinks: This is more proof. Who is Buffy focused on? Who is getting her attention? It's Faith. This despite Spike being staged liked the main event.

Was Buffy hoping to find Faith alone in the basement? Hoping to find Spike alone in the basement? Is she mad about the idea of being left out??

I love the Faith/Spike basement scene in Dirty Girls for all the obvious reasons, but I especially love how it’s set up:

Like you first see Faith coming down the basement steps looking uneasy. Momentarily overwhelmed by the potentials (and everything else) and needing a place where she can be alone. Where she can drop all her confidence and bravado and the carefully plastered on unflappable exterior she came breezing back into town with.

and then Faith realizes she’s not alone, that Spike is there too

and the second she does Faith becomes Faith again. Like you can almost pinpoint the second her guard goes back up and she’s on; all fun and flirty and talking about her time in prison and a (potentially traumatizing) sexual experience she had when she was a teenager like it’s no big deal.

And that other, more anxious, more uncertain girl doesn’t come back for the rest of the scene.

Like it’s such a small piece of characterization to slip into what’s already an amazing scene, but it’s so good and so very Faith.

thinking about how in 7x18 Dirty Girls - Faith mentions the last movie she saw was in prison and it was Glitter. and it's this funny throw-away line (bc Glitter bombed) but Glitter was released right after September 11th. and the Glitter movie promo tour also featured a breakdown by Mariah Carey, with her acting very erratic. she was eventually hospitalized and diagnosed as bipolar. as a Mariah fan this felt like the lowest point for her, personally and professionally. (she has ofc made a comeback, so she's good now) so yeah it's funny and it's a shitty movie but damn Faith.
