Enemies (BTVS 3.17)

This is part of my ongoing Buffy Project, where I write notes/meta for every episode in an attempt to better understand the characters and themes of the show. You can find the full list here. Gifs are not mine.

We’ve seen Faith murder a man, assault Xander, and join up with the Mayor. But moving in on Buffy’s man? That was the last straw.

Faith: Don’t worry, big guy. Just keeping her warm for ya.

Don’t we all love bisexual Faith/Fuffy innuendos? Faith interrupts Buffy and Angel kissing after a movie date. They’re trying, but the no sex thing still hangs over them and things aren’t what they once were. It’s harder to ignore the fact that they just don’t have a future. Faith tries to bring up the subject with Buffy but is, as always, shut down.

A demon offers up the Books of Ascension for a cool $5,000 and the gang finally gets a clue about the Mayor’s plan.

Giles: Demons after money. Whatever happened to the still-beating heart of a virgin? No one has any standards anymore.

Giles and Wesley are stumped on Ascension, but Willow pipes up with a text she read that mentioned it. She got into the top of Giles’ book cabinet to reach it even though she knows he stores things there he doesn’t want her to have. At this point, Giles, you should either try harder to ban Willow from magic or give it up and instruct her on how to do it properly. Your decision to do nothing wasn’t the brightest. Same could be said about Faith, but Giles has a one-track mind and it’s on Buffy. They discover that a town disappeared in 1723 after an Ascension took place.

The relationship between Faith and the Mayor is so fascinating. He’s completely evil and leading her down a dark path but has offered up more care and affection than anyone in her life. He tells her to put her hair back and forces her to drink milk before a mission. To Buffy it would seem controlling, but to Faith it’s a sign he cares. He seems shocked that anyone could prefer Buffy to her and is willing to validate and console her. He never gets upset when she fails and always tries to cheer her up.

On the Mayor’s orders Faith kills the bargaining demon and takes the books. He fights back and she butchers him, going to Angel covered in blood. She’s been ordered to take Angel’s soul by sleeping with him. It probably stumped Faith that he was loyal to Buffy, but that’s what gets her about Buffy anyway. Why is she so special that her mom cares about her, she has friends, she has the Watcher, she has the boy? What is it about Buffy?

Willow: Does Angel come up to Faith’s standards for a guy? Let’s see...is he breathing?

Buffy: Actually no.

Willow: Wow, she doesn’t even have that standard.

Nice slut-shaming there. I didn’t really notice how much Willow hates Faith until this rewatch. She comforts Buffy that Angel wouldn’t go for Faith because he’s crazy about her. Willow is still approval girl when it comes to Buffy’s romantic choices.

Faith: Look, I’m not so good at apologies. Mostly ‘cause I think the world’s out to screw me, so I’m generally more owed than owing, you know?

I’m pointing out this quote because I think it illuminates another problem Faith has: namely, dealing with the sheer fucking luck of life. She doesn’t really want to take responsibility for her mistakes because it’s not fair. Why was she born to child-beating mom while Buffy got Joyce (who Faith likely views as perfect in comparison, though we know that’s hardly the case). Why didn’t Faith get the perfect life? Well, those are the breaks. As much as it sucks, we can’t control where we were born. We can only control what we do from there. But Faith is still caught up in what ifs and is allowing her crappy circumstances to shuffle her along the past of least resistance.

Cordelia asks Wesley out and Xander becomes jealous. I’m not convinced Cordelia really likes Wesley since she asked in front of everyone. It seems more about making Xander jealous. Forever bitter about the ending of their relationship, guys.

I’m a little embarrassed I fell for the light show the Shaman puts on the first time around. We’ve seen Angel’s soul move around before and it looks totally different. I understand why Angel had to be such a good actor for plot’s sake, but it’s a little out-of-character given his horrid acting skills in School Hard. Maybe he learned from his mistakes?

Angel: Let me guess. You summoned back the true Angelus 'cause... you need a new Boy Toy? Sorry. Doesn't work that way.

This is actually a good point. Faith had no idea what she was getting into. Buffy never really opened up about it. “Angelus” and Faith lure Buffy to the mansion.

Faith: Something about all this just feels so right. Maybe it's one of those unhappy childhood things. See, when I was a kid, I used to beg my mom for a dog. Didn't matter what kind, I just wanted, you know, something to love. A dog's all I wanted. Well, that and toys. But Mom was so busy, you know, enjoying the drinking and passing out parts of life, that I never really got what I wanted.

Well, it’s pretty clear how Faith acquired those anger issues. I think powerlessness is one of the biggest rage-inducers.

Faith: You think you're better than me? Do you? Say it! You think you're better than me!

Well, Faith, you certainly think so. I think this is one of the hardest things for Faith. As luck would have it, Buffy has less issues to work through at this point in her life. She was born in a much more privileged position and that comes with certain benefits. It’s easier for Faith to find where she’s already the best (the Mayor) than work through her issues and be the fucked-up sheep of the Scooby family.

Faith: What are you going to do, B? Kill me - you become me. You're not ready for that...Yet.

Faith admires and needs Buffy’s approval as much as she’s jealous of her and wants to destroy her. That’s what stealing Angel was about, after all--Faith wants everything Buffy has. I also think she wants to be Buffy (hence the body stealing next season) but as mentioned above it’s hard to look at someone else and think you have all this garbage to work though before you can be as “perfect” as them. It’s a complicated relationship, with Faith wanting to be her, sleep with her, and destroy her all at the same time.

Buffy is a little traumatized over Angel’s excellent acting skills and asks for a break. In one of their cute moments...

Angel: You still my girl?

Buffy: Always.

Character Notes:

The Mayor: I really don’t want to know why he knows ‘there’s more than one way to skin a cat’ is factually true. He hates germs and is more than one hundred years old.

Angel: He mentions that he didn’t have a choice about turning evil. It would be terrible to have this other side of you you have no control over. A side than can give you all these horrible memories.

Faith Lehane: She says that her mom never loved her. Buffy calls what Faith did to the demon “a party” but Faith says he put up a fight.

Buffy Summers: She isn’t the most straight-forward person. She’s always refusing to just ask Angel something she wants to know and keeps her feelings hidden. Willow has to beg her to open up.

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce: He’s begun keeping things from the Council. Specifically that he’s working with Giles as a team.

Xander Harris: I admire his willingness to take action even though the gang pretty much never asks him to. He bribes Willy to find the demon’s address. I feel like Xander and Willy are basically pals at this point.
