#but in the games I always considered Korrina to be like

Alright, I’ve officially decided I’m never going to touch anything PokeMas-fandom related ever again. At least not Reddit related. I’m just going to get my datamine and then leave.
The Pokemon fanbase has always been a cesspool, but considering how character-focused PokeMas is I honestly shouldn’t be surprised how batshit insane things get down there.
I don’t understand how people get so goddamn heated over which character does or doesn’t get an alt. Sure, it’s a bit ridiculous that Brendan has 0 alts while May is likely getting her 4th soon. But Nate is my second favorite protagonist who hasn’t gotten a single alt since his arrival, and I just...hold out hope that he gets one. I don’t get why everyone needs to shit on every single goddamn alt that comes out that isn’t the character they wanted. And the campaigns for ‘Justice for Brendan’ ‘Justice for Korrina’ (which is still going on despite the fact she already got an alt) ‘Justice for Victor’ ‘Justice for Let’s Go’ is just getting so tiring and cluttering up the entire subreddit. It was cute when the first Justice for Kris campaign started, since it was new and the campaign was largely about hyping up Kris rather than shitting on new pairs. But now it’s just so goddamn formulaic and tedious.
And the sheer amount of hypocrisy that’s present within the fanbase is off the charts, mainly when it has to do with the female characters. People will start complaining that DeNa doesn’t give male protagonists enough attention, yet once the discourse dies down that argument will immediately subside again and people will once again start talking about how much they’re crushing on the female protagonists and their alts (most of which are explicitly children and I’m never going to stop being pissed about how normalized this shit is within this fanbase). Like, gee, I wonder why the female protagonists are getting alts so much? And who does care about the male alts we do have right now? Furbert’s a non-entity right now, Red’s only talked about in relation to his Classic version, and the hype around SS Ethan started to die down. Hell, who cares about the male characters in general outside of the aforementioned ‘Justice for X’ campaigns? Who’s going to pull for these male protagonist alts if they finally come out?
DeNa is a corporation. DeNa is a corporation that wants money. They make their alts based on what sells (especially taking Japan into consideration). Cynthia sells, so they give her 3 alts. Lillie sells, so they give her 4 alts. N sells, so they give him 3 alts. Leon sells (at least in Japan), so they give him 3 alts. They do care about their fanbase a lot more than most companies do, but they’re still making this game to make money. And I’m not going to shame anyone who spends money on this game (God knows anyone who follows my main blog saw the biggest dumbfuck decision I made recently), but the point still stands. The characters who make money or will make money are going to get the most attention.
This sounded a lot more pretentious than I intended it to be, I just needed to barf this out. I’m just so goddamn tired of this discourse surrounding a Pokemon gacha game of all things that most people only use as a timekiller.

Unit Teambuilding - Aura Cynthia
Apparently Cynthia is next, which is nice for me, I’m used to not getting what I want until the last thing.  I mean...what I really want is last up, but we’ll get to her.  Anyway, Aura Cynthia, perhaps the most shit on Master Fair of all time!  But is she really all that bad?
General Overview No, people just disrespect defensive buffers.
To go over the negative: Cynthia is our first Fighting Zone setter, but does not have it as a move.  Instead, she sets it on entry, and on sync.  Every sync, not just first.  This should be good, in that it’s effectively infinite if desired, but it would consume every sync.  You also run into the issue of Silver, where the time between that sync and your next is too long for Zone to still be in effect.  The particular hissy fit going on is that you can’t use this Zone to get SC Diantha to max power.  As if she wasn’t hitting damage cap already.  You can’t get the other options to sync with it either, which is a bit of a problem as well, since sync damage tends to outperform move damage in most scenarios.
But that doesn’t make move damage useless.  Fighting types are mostly high-damage moves.  Whether it be low accuracy like Wally and Bruno, detrimental effects like Korrina, or just being chads like Bea and SC Diantha, BP on fighting moves is generally really high.  And the zone can be up perpetually thanks to Cynthia, to fuel those attacks.  Her Buddy Move, which is usable after taking two hits, deals some damage and gives the team +2 stacks of both physical and special moves up next.  She’s not a bad zone user, she just wants you to use your move damage.
The other thing to be conscientious of is that you have to consider the whole of a unit, not just one trait.  Yes, Zone has some limitations.  It was always going to on a support unit.  Even SS Kris is not actually perfect, despite my insistence.  But Cynthia has tools well beyond just the Zone, and some come about because the Zone is there at all.  Cynthia’s trainer move instantly caps both defensive stats.  That is obscene.  No need for MPR, no need to even wait.  Just perfect defensive stats instantly, because of Zone.  With Team Fist Bump 3, that’s a 40% chance to heal the team when she attacks, and she has Fighting Zone Triage Tank 4, which is another 50% chance for a heal.  You know how everyone likes to talk a big game about SS Blue being unkillable because he takes three turns to buff defense, takes forever on special defense, and only has two stacks of 30% passive healing?  Okay, what if you had better defensive stats, instantly capped both defenses, had two stacks of passive healing at 40% and 50%, and had a pop heal in Potion, with double MPR if desired.  If I ever hear someone calling SS Blue the best supporter again I’m going to smack them.
And then there’s the other utility.  Cynthia can cap crit as she uses Vacuum Wave.  Vacuum Wave can paralyze and/or confuse for some reason.  Cynthia can have Impervious.  Cynthia can deny flinches for the entire team.  Her utility is through the roof.  It’s situational, but that’s just because the core of her use is so strong.  Cynthia performs her actual role as a supreme defensive supporter perfectly, and the inclusion of moves up next stacks and Fighting Zone is meant to be icing on that particular cake.  Anyone looking at this and saying it’s bad is literally insane.  We have gone through this six times by now.  Spring Burgh, Halloween Caitlin, Kimono Jasmine, SS Dawn, Summer Hilda, and now this.  Defensive supporters are good.  Defensive supporters are good, and Aura Cynthia is an insane defensive support.  Just let go of the sync thing, okay?  I promise, it’s going to be okay.
Oh, but if you really insist on not getting over it?  She has Head Start for faster access to first sync, and second sync because it activates again on Mega Evolution.  What flaw?
Team 1: Aura Cynthia, SC Diantha, Support Tauros “But Cynthia’s bad for Diantha because Diantha can’t get her sync nuke with the Zone!”  If I go into literally any fight, off-type, right now, and give Diantha a setup that capped her special defense and speed by first sync, I can pretty much assure you the center would explode into powder.  Any Legendary Gauntlet open right now, with the gimmick box checked, could easily take max damage in a sync.  SC Diantha does not need Zone for her sync.  But what she can make hilariously good use of, is the fact that Secret Sword is insane damage that continuously scales upward as she debuffs the foe, and that she gets to access in literally one turn of setup.  That’s it.  That is all you need.  MU Tauros rounds this out because +2 special attack, and capped speed.  Look at that, literal perfection with an eggmon, what are the odds?
Team 2: Aura Cynthia, Bruno, MU Hitmonchan Oh look, another one.  Bruno’s every need is fulfilled by this combination.  Cynthia provides the bulk, which kicks off Smart Cookie, and can buff his crit.  MU Hitmonchan can buff his attack stat to cap, and give the team some speed support.  Bruno takes one turn to Dire Hit+ so he’s not waiting on Cynthia, and is now throwing out Cross Chops under Zone.  With Cynthia taking first sync, you likely won’t even see second in a CS stage.
Team 3: Aura Cynthia, Anni May, Caitlin “You’re not doing this.”  Oh, I’m doing this.  Aura Cynthia can cap crit rate and bulk, and provides a ton of consistent healing for the team.  With a bulky team like Anni May/Caitlin, this combination is effectively immortal.  The Fighting Zone isn’t strictly necessary, but its presence means you can take that extra stack of Triage Tank for even more passive healing if you want.
Team 4: Aura Cynthia, Lodge Rosa, Winona/May Now, you may be wondering how this works.  Don’t worry, I’ll tell you.  Rosa has Vigilance.  Meaning all those defensive buffs?  They can’t be ignored, because she can’t be crit.  For Gauntlet, this makes Rosa effectively unbreakable.  Throw in Winona for a flinch rate and some Rain support, and you can easily take down Entei and Moltres, and probably a few off-type options besides.
Team 5: Aura Cynthia, SS Red, Blaine Anti-Cobalion.  Cynthia can paralyze the thing, and SS Red is able to self-setup offensively just fine.  In many situations, Red’s sync isn’t even the selling point, it’s Blast Burn.  So Cynthia’s re-application of Zone means consistent access to double stacks of passive healing.
Team 6: Aura Cynthia, Alder, Lucian Anti-Azelf tech.  Alder’s a great Azelf answer offensively, but the -3 defense really hurts him when Azelf’s sync is so threatening.  Oops, sorry, now it’s max defense, because of Cynthia.  And she’s constantly recovering his HP.  And can pack Impervious to not even worry about the spread defense drops.  You can toss in Lucian to get a bit more mileage out of her Master Passive, and for his tremendous debuffs.
Final Thoughts I feel like I usually put up more of these, but with so many units I do want to keep things more succinct.  Cynthia is a unit that works optimally with units that can self-setup their offensive stats, and offers a whole host of potential traits to answer Gauntlet.  Her Zone support is limited in that it’s hard to get your offensive sync nukes to access the Zone multiplier, but this is far from a dealbreaker in terms of her utility.  Aura Cynthia is all about move-based DPS.  She maximizes the utility of moves, and provides tremendous staying power with enormous bulk and fantastic healing capabilities.
Mark my words, people will almost universally skip her, or downplay her, due to Red and Ash.  But right around mid-October, people are going to see some demonstrations of her, and go wow, I sure wish I had pulled for her, that defensive utility is so good.  Like they do every single time a defensively-oriented support comes along.

Game Informer Magazine (November 2019, Issue 319) Scans
I try to focus on mainly scanning older items, but I found this Game Informer magazine and couldn't pass it up.
I mean gosh, anything pre-Covid may as well be a relic, right? (jkjk)
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the front cover is a bit damaged, but I still really love this art collage of Pikachu and the Sword and Shield starters!
Here's some scans from this issue that I like!
Starting off, here's the fanart page.
Tumblr media
These fanart/personal creation corners are my favorite pages in hobby magazines. It makes me so nostalgic for being a preteen and wanting to make and submit my own art in hopes of it being featured!
When I was about 13, I was obsessed with DeviantArt. My dad showed me how to use the scanner so I could scan my own art and post it (on the family computer, of course). My sister came to me one day and asked me to scan her comic that she wanted to submit to the in-game Club Penguin newspaper/magazine.
I didn't play Club Penguin much (I was a Neopets girl), but I fondly remember her being so proud of that comic. I helped her scan and submit it, and asked her every day if it got put into the paper. I don't think it ever did, but it was a fun time waiting to see if it would.
Speaking of Neopets, I also really loved the Neopets paper. I'd spend hours browsing backlogs of the paper to look at the fanart and read the fanfiction that was posted there.
Good times!
----
I thought this League of Legends art was super neat, but the whole premise of this article is hilarious to me.
Tumblr media
Like...ok, Riot/League. iykyk.
I'm a fairly new League of Legends player - I started playing after watching Arcane. My bf has been an on-again off-again League player, but I was always too intimidated to get into it. I actually got into it first from Team Fight Tactics, and then started playing ARAM, and only recently started dipping my toes into Summoner's Rift.
Anyways, as much as I love the game, people can be SO mean. So just seeing the article title and thinking of all the rudeness I've seen in-game is pretty funny. I know a lot of good people play and work on this game though, so I appreciate the optimism and work to make the community better.
Granted, this article isn't only about League of Legends. But I think having them as the front cover for the article is kind of hilarious.
----
As a Pokémon fan, I thought this top ten page was a fun look at past gym leaders, especially considering the cover story for this issue is about the new (at the time) Pokémon mainline games.
Tumblr media
The judging criteria is not clear at all. That's ok, there doesn't need to be a reason to do a top ten list - I'm assuming these are just this guy's favorite gym leaders. It is refreshing to see some leaders who don't normally wind up on these kinds of lists though, like Wulfric, Maylene, and Korrina.
This is really wanting to make me go back and play Let's Go! Pikachu lol.
----
Ok, so admittedly I knew nothing about Baldur's Gate 3 until the day it came out and I was like 'What the heck is this game everyone on my friend's list is playing?"
My bf ended up buying it for me and we played it co-op. Definitely deserved all the hype and praise it got.
So color me surprised when I was flipping through this magazine from 2019 and saw mention of Baldur's Gate 3.
Tumblr media
There's a whole interview in here with the founder of the BG3 game studio. I knew this game was in development for many years, but I just completely missed the hype leading up to it.
----
Now some scans from the main cover story about Pokémon Sword and Shield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These aren't all the scans from the spread, but I just wanted to show some of them off! I love multi-page stories about things where they feel almost like scrapbooks with how the graphics are arranged.
----
Here's a preview about the Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've never played a Final Fantasy game, and though I'd love to someday, I'd have no clue where to start. I do love the character designs and I thought this game looked beautiful when it was announced.
And some more previews for various games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little Town Hero was actually on my radar at the time, as it gave big Fantasy Life vibes (and I LOVED Fantasy Life). Also, I just learned from this article that Toby Fox was brought in to compose? Amazing.
I looked it up and it's available on Steam, but disappointingly the reviews seem pretty mixed. I'm gonna add it to my wishlist and grab it when it goes on sale.
----
Here's a couple of reviews from the review section.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And an ending fluff page about creepy Pokémon pokedex entries.
Tumblr media
And that's it for this one!
The full magazine is available to read over on my Internet Archive account.
Thanks for reading!

Anyone else just kinda angry by the fact that they never evolved Clemont’s Chespin?
Like, in the episode “Appetite for Battle” Clemont literally SHIELDED Chespin from the Delphox’s attack, and the writers just… Decided to ignore the fact that the move Chesnaught gets from leveling up is Spiky SHIELD.
Like, they could’ve had an episode where Clemont was in danger so Chespin (Quilladin by then) would run in and shield him just like Clemont did for it. That would’ve been so good!

Is it me of does Hoenn seem more knowledgeable on mega evolution than Kalos does? I was honestly going to send this long winded ask breaking down the inconsistency of mega evolution in the games, like who came first Lucario or Rayquaza, and if Rayquaza cane first( which I believe it did), why does Kalos, or specifically Korrina state it was Lucario?( Personal theory that Rayquaza back then was considered a deity more than a pokemon, so when it came to which pokemon cam first, it was considered to be Lucario.) Why is there so limited amounts of trainers in both xy and oras that has this ability, is there some sort of power system in the league?!?!( Probably)
But I realized once I get started I would be here forever. So! I ask the simpler question; why does it seem that Hoenn has more knowledge or the origin/ history of mega evolution. Is it inconsistent writing or is it more?
Hi there @ihopethisendswell! First off, please don't ever worry about long asks! Really I enjoy thinking about and answering (thinking about people's asks provides a great distraction during some of the longer experiments I have to do at work so). Literally the only thing is that it will probably take me a bit longer to actually answer it :D
So to answer the question about which came first, if we're going off of Bulbapedia (and God bless the souls who figured out the Pokemon timeline), then Rayquaza's did come first. But this doesn't necessarily mean Kalos is wrong about Lucario being the first. Rayquaza may have been the first documented occurence of mega evolution, but Kalos legend of Lucario may have been the first instance mega evolution between a single human and a Pokemon as the Pokemon world knows it in modern day. Because remember Rayquaza mega evolved, but with the wish of at least hundreds of humans and without a specific mega stone for itself. And that is also a legendary. So the rules are different for Rayquaza.
But for Lucario's tale, the way it happens there is how it happens for the average modern day trainer who is lucky enough to get enough a keystone. That's the blueprint that is followed for any non-Rayquaza mega evolution (because even the text for Rayquaza's mega is different, instead of saying the keystone reacts it says [Player]'s fervent wish reached Rayquaza).
So both are firsts in their own way. Now as far why Korrina said Lucario is the first I think it comes down to two reasons. One I don't think Draconid's historical of recount of Rayquaza is widely known outside of their and possibly ancient Sootopolitan circles, so it's likely Korrina may not even know. But let's say she did, this leads to reason two where the Rayquaza story means very little to Calem/Serena and their quest to master mega evolution because the conditions are so different between your average mega capable Pokemon and Rayquaza. It was better for them to hear about the Lucario tale because that's what they would be using in the long run.
To answer your simpler question about why it seems like Hoenn knows more. I'm not going to discount that some of this probably a result inconsistent writing, because honestly to some degree it is. However, I do think given a lot of the reason why Hoenn seems to know more about the origin is simply because that first instance happened there. And with the only documented knowledge of this being passed down in a small group of Draconids it's just likely that the information never really got spread around Hoenn (because of the most knowledgeable about mega evolution it's pretty much solely the Draconids) much less people from outside the region. The only known foreigner who would've witnessed that first mega evolution of Rayquaza was AZ, and given how elusive he is it's unlikely he went around other regions talking about it (and if he did it may have been to random people who just thought he was weird and didn't bother writing what he said down).
Now to answer that final question about why it seems so limited. I think it comes to two things. The first is just general scarcity of key stones and mega stones. It's hard to get your hand on a key stone let alone the appropriate mega stone for your Pokemon. This is compared to say z-crystals which we see on a lot of trainers, even non-major NPCs. Dynamax bands seem to fall in the middle with them being a little more scarce but not as scarce as mega evolution. Because of that scarcity it's also likely that many trainers who do have the ability to mega evolve their Pokemon don't always use it. Think of Korrina, she only mega evolves her Lucario in game during the successor battle and not the gym battle. With the relative scarcity of stones, it's unlikely someone challenging Korrina at her gym would have one and with the power differential between megas and non-megas that could make the match very unfair.
The second reason likely has to do with regulation. If we go off some of the SM/USUM pokedex entries then some of the mega evolutions are either very painful and/or extremely dangerous. Not something you would necessarily want in the hands of just any old trainer. Again of the three battle mechanics, z-moves prove to be the safest whereas both megas and dynamax pokemon have proven to be potentially extremely harmful. Between the two stones you need for Mega Evolution, the Key stone is more universal, it makes since to regulate those (hence why you had to pass that test in XY). And considering on average it's more likely that a person higher up in the league would have not only a mega-capable species but also the ability to not get them or their Pokemon hurt using it, it would likely go to the more powerful trainers first.

Pokémon Character Analysis: Iris
With Iris set to return to the anime in next week’s episode of Journeys. I decided to take the time to analyse her character as I’ll be honest, Iris isn’t one of my favourite travelling companions. However, now that I’m older and I’ve taken the time to analyse her character. I realise, that a lot of the hate Iris receives is slightly over the top.
As with all my reviews/analyses, I’ll keep them under the cut. So, if you want to keep reading, that’s great!
Introduction:
As many people that have read my previous reviews and know me, may know I am a huge fan of the Diamond and Pearl games and anime series. I will be the first to say, I know Diamond and Pearl wasn’t a perfect series, honestly, there is no such thing as a perfect series. But as a follow-up to DP, Black and White was definitely a let-down for a lot of fans, either because of completely resetting Ash’s knowledge which was honestly an insult to his DP incarnation, his travelling companions or the fact that he lost to Cameron of all people in the Vertress Conference. BW in some aspects left a lot to be desired.
Nevertheless, this post is focusing on Iris, a companion similar to Goh, a lot of fans love to hate particularly because of her infamous catchphrase “You’re such a kid.” Looking back, this was one of the things that did make me drop the series, keep in mind I was 11 when BW started airing. So, hearing a character that is meant to be the same age or younger than you say "You’re such a kid!” Over and over again, got annoying quite quickly.
However, looking back the usage of that infamous catchphrase was probably exaggerated. Whilst, working past that I still didn’t come to love Iris. Considering, Iris is meant to be one of the main character and similar to Goh, they are meant to be written in a way that makes us want to see them grow, cheer them on and be happy when they succeed. Nonetheless, when you look at the way they are written and their development it just makes it abundantly clear that Iris and Goh are the victims of poor writing.
Iris’ Initial Characterisation:
The aspect that made me drop the series was Iris’ initial characterisation particularly the infamous phrase “You’re such a kid” which as I mentioned in the introduction, which with the benefit of hindsight I can see the usage of it has been exaggerated. Nevertheless, it doesn’t change the fact that it was annoying. Especially, given when Ash meets Iris, he had defeated legendaries by this point, acquired 36 badges (that’s including the Orange Archipelago badges) and defeated the Battle Frontier. Whereas Iris may have had good battling prowess and at one point had a 99-battle winning streak, but, her Axew was a newborn with hardly any battling experience and her Excadrill was refusing to listen to her.
Many people use the defence that Misty called Ash a kid yet she doesn’t nearly receive as much hate. To be fair, when Misty met Ash, he was a rookie trainer and Misty was a gym leader, so Misty at least had the position and knowledge to back her up. However, this was only an issue at the beginning of the series and the insults tend to die down, but, that initial characterisation is what stopped me from watching the series since my 11-year-old self did not have the patience for that.
Iris’ Goal:
Iris’ goal is to become a Dragon Master, however, by the end of Black and White, Iris opts to travel to Johto to battle Clair and following the conclusion of that battle she opts to follow the direction she saw Rayquaza flying. When I look at this conclusion, I’m honestly confused, I have no sense of whether or not Iris is any closer to achieving her goal. Or even throughout the series, we get no sense of how anyone who wants to master any Pokémon typing reaches their goal, a majority of type specialists typically end up in the position of Gym Leader or Elite Four. But Iris never once expressed a desire to be a Gym Leader or any higher-ranking position. Which, makes Drayden decision to choose Iris as his successor, all the more unusual to me. I suppose in one way it gives Iris a position/goal to work towards but given Iris’ free-spirited personality, having someone choose her path rather than choosing it herself feels unnatural.
Additionally, an obvious method to becoming a type specialist is catching Pokémon of the same type you want to specialize in and little more than half of Iris’ team actually consist of Dragon-types. I understand Gym Leaders having at least one alternative type to give their team diversity and cover their weaknesses. As shown by Candice owning a Medicham and Piers having a Toxtricity in his party later in the SW/SH games. But, Excadrill fits the bill more than Emolga as Excadrill is part of Steel-type which covers Iris’ team’s weaknesses to Ice and the newly introduced Fairy-types. That is not to say that I dislike Emolga or anything but it felt like she was an unusual catch.
I am aware Clemont only had one Electric-type on hand when travelling with Ash, to be fair, the remainder of his Electric-types were at the Lumiose Gym and before catching his Bunnelby he displayed apprehension at handling other types of Pokémon.
Axew:
I like to think of the characters’ first Pokémon or their partner Pokémon as a mirror reflecting their growth. Take May and Blaziken, they mirror one another’s development perfectly as when Blaziken was a Torchic much like May, he was inexperienced and unsure of himself. When Torchic evolved to Combusken, at this point May had won two Contest Ribbons and began to feel confident in her Coordinating skills. Once, Torchic evolved into Combusken he developed that same level of confidence, he didn’t feel the need to compete for May’s attention and wasn’t bullied or intimidated by other Pokémon like Ash’s Corphish. Then Combusken evolves to Blaziken in the penultimate episode, once May has decided to leave the group, travel through Johto on her own and find her own battling style. At this point, May has chosen to become independent and this reflects in Combusken, her first Pokémon evolving into his final stage. My point being I like to think every travelling companions’ ace reflects their character growth and I don’t get that same feeling with Iris and Axew.
Now it is clear that Iris and Axew care for one another and there is also the twist that Axew wasn’t Iris’ first Pokémon. However, for a majority of the series, Axew was Iris’ only Dragon-type and in the sixth episode, he has a dream of evolving into his final stage. After that, the idea of Axew evolving is hardly addressed. As I’ve mentioned, evolving or choosing not to evolve are one method of allowing Pokémon to develop, considering, Axew has expressed a desire to evolve, I think he should have at least evolved into Fraxure before the BW series concluded. As aside from him learning Dragon-type moves and developing as a battler, once, Dragonite’s introduced he’s kind of pushed to the sidelines and doesn’t develop any further.
Many fans are hoping by Iris’ appearance in Journeys, Axew has evolved into Haxorus. However, if Axew had evolved into Fraxure by the end of the series, then his evolution into Haxorus would feel more natural to me.
Dragonite:
I will be honest; I am not a huge fan of Iris’ Dragonite. It felt as though, the writers forgot to give her an additional Dragon-type and just rewarded her with this random Dragonite. Also, there is the fact, that Dragonite was disobedient towards Iris despite the fact he joined her team willingly. This display of disobedience reflects poorly on Iris as a trainer, especially after Excadrill’s arc. Moreover, Iris has had some of her best moments throughout the series with the other Unovan Dragon-types such as Druddigon and Deino both of which would have been great captures for her particularly Deino as she has a Hydreigon in the games.
Also, HE. SHOULD. HAVE. LOST. TO. DAWN’S. MAMOSWINE!!!! (and I’m not just saying that because I love Dawn and her Mamoswine)
If the writers absolutely felt that they had to give Iris a Dragonite, they could have at least done it whilst she was in Johto since Dragonite’s pre-evolutions can be found in Dragon’s Den and Route 45. It honestly would have made more sense than giving her a Gible which isn’t even native to Johto and we haven’t even been given a hint on whether or not Gible is appearing in the next episode.
Conclusion:
I think posting my thoughts, always, manages to clear my head. Now whilst, Iris wasn’t my favourite travelling companion of Ash’s. I feel as though some of the hate towards her is exaggerated as she has had some great moments and development throughout BW. One of my favourite arcs in BW, was Iris restoring her relationship with Excadrill which was one of the most poignant moments of the series.
I think if the writers did a better job as well at establishing Iris’ goals – we understand she wants to be a Dragon Master, but does she want to become a gym leader? A caretaker of Dragon-types (similar to Liza of Charicific Valley)? If they had established this from the beginning, we would have had a better understanding of the direction they wanted to take with Iris’ development.
As well, in the games, Iris has a better relationship with Drayden as she affectionately refers to him as “Grandpa”, I think if they transferred that relationship into the anime, it would have made Drayden’s choice of selecting Iris as his successor feel a lot more natural.
All in all, I feel as though Iris was the victim of some arguably poor and weird writing choices and she isn’t the only character to experience this throughout the series. After writing this, I am looking forward to Ash vs Iris next week, but you have to hope they don’t pull the same stunt as they did with Korrina and diminish all of Iris’ efforts and training during her absence. At least we’ll finally get to see Dracovish in action as well!

Scout Value - Halloween Spotlight Scout
Time for my yearly propaganda about how Halloween Caitlin is actually the best! Hey kids, you like 0.33% odds?! Then boy do we have a spotlight for you! All the previous Halloween alts crammed in one! This is a terrible value, do not let me deceive you in this way, but also listen to me about Caitlin.
Halloween Acerola Let's start with the poster child for "Seasonal alts should get grid expansions now." Acerola is bad. Ghost Tech, decent enough nuke, but not exactly strong with it. Her focus is confusion, she's got pretty poor DPS and no real MPR on her limited traits, it's an entire mess. I'm still so tempted to get it. I don't know why, I've come around to not even liking Acerola all that much, and I've never been as attached to Mimikyu as others, so I couldn't even say what draws me in. I think it's my tendency to champion garbage.
Halloween Hilbert Hilbert spent a long time being talked about as one of the best Dark pairs. When I started around second anniversary, he was still considered respectable. Now he is laughable. If you need Dark, go get Akari, that'll fix it. Hilbert just has so much trouble with survival. Even with 2/5, the recoil is so severe that he tends to knock himself out before you want him to. And if you needed high DPS with recoil, BP Karen can do that by now. I don't respect H!Hilbert.
Halloween Morty Morty's one of those pairs I really wish were better. Spread burn, potential debuffs to attack per hit, infinite MP replenishment. Morty has actual skills. But. Morty's damage is also pretty bad, and his support as a Tech doesn't offer enough to really compete. Burn is still a fairly middling status, to the point I consider it worst in the game. And just attack debuffs, single-target even, does not cut it. He's fairly disappointing overall, which is sad because Mega Banette is so cool.
Halloween Caitlin "Oh boy, I can't wait to get Poison Zone, or maybe Ghost Rebuff!" No shut up you're getting Caitlin. Okay look, I'm biased, Caitlin is my favorite character, and this alt is my everything. But listen. She's actually exceptional, and over time, the value of Caitlin Stocks has only gone up.
Initially, Caitlin was considered a niche pick, because she couldn't buff crit, in the era of "crit is the most important stat." Instead, she only buffed every other relevant stat for a physical attacker, down to the accuracy. The compression of Atk/Spd/Acc on one button is especially tremendous. As the meta shifted, and grid expansions came about, and suddenly everything up to Lodge units could cap crit at the push of a button, suddenly Caitlin finds herself in a hilarious position, as a pair able to boost everything else they could want. With fairly respectable defenses, a metric ton of shields on mega evolution, built-in Vigilance, and options like Stalwart/Unbending, Caitlin has been a long-time staple of teambuilding for me. I will acknowledge yes, she's not a top dog at this point. Especially with SS Acerola and Argenta running around and supplying constant PMUN stacks. But the Atk/Spd combo on the same button is still, somehow, a rare trait. And accuracy buffing remains exceptionally rare. Caitlin offers a metric ton, and has always been severely underrated as a threat.
Halloween Allister Comparatively, I will shit on this kid all day. "But Ghost rebuffs-" no listen to me. Ghost types tend to be slow. Agatha, Shauntal, and SS Korrina are the only exceptions. Allister is slow as dirt. He compounds the issues within the type, and his value outside of Ghost types is being a kind of okay physical wall. He dishonors the Gourgeist name. Allister sucks, I use him sometimes for Gauntlet because 3/5 Allister can paralyze, but I do not respect him in the slightest.
Halloween Iris Iris, as a Poison type with DPS and a Zone, should stand out as a pick. Unfortunately, Iris is pretty poor as a Zone setter, and a nuke. Iris struggles to achieve her nuke independently due to slow debuffing that requires a specific grid node that's hard to afford around her damage nodes. And at present, all of the top Poison damage meta is physical. Her best special partners are Petrel, who few will have, and Drasna, who isn't even Poison. As a result, Iris is...fairly poor at present. I was really banking on Lusamine/Nihilego this year, it would've been the perfect complement, but instead...nothing. To be honest, Oleana is a better team supporter for damage thanks to her AoE rebuff and physical designation than Iris is. Which is. Sad.
Final Thoughts Get Caitlin. I say this shit every year, but if you're looking at this, get Caitlin. She is so goddamn good. Halloween, as a whole, tends to be fairly...middling. Like, even the picks from last year aged like milk. Morty doesn't get to do much, and Acerola and Hilbert are effectively without value in the modern meta. Only Caitlin has withstood the test of time, and if I'm being honest? I don't expect Phoebe or Roxanne to do better. Phoebe's already walking the same "niche support that doesn't do enough" line that many other seasonals have, while Roxanne has a strong nuke, but pretty poor DPS and slow buffing/debuffing support for a team. Even her Topsy Turvy effect is locked to sync, and thus a lot more difficult to manage. Caitlin is the supreme Halloween unit. The one that withstood the curse. And I think she should be rewarded for that. Maybe with your credit card information. So she can buy more costumed alts for herself.

Unit Teambuilding - Halloween Phoebe
Phoebe finally gets her alt, and it's Cofagrigus, which was my most hoped for partner for Shauntal. I'm not exactly thrilled.
General Overview I'm going to start negative on this one. Phoebe's problem is that she doesn't do anything new. Her trainer move is just Evelyn's, which is notorious for not being that good. Potion is fine, but she's in the SC Lillie tier of grid where it's hard to get the double MPR around other traits she wants. Phantom Force slows down your progress toward sync for little reason. Her ability to buff both offenses per attack is good for Gauntlet, but it's completely inconsequential in CS. And her passive to ignore the offensive buffs of opponents that hit her is...kinda bad? Like it's an option for Gauntlet solos for things like Cobalion, but in general practice, debuffs are far better, given this passive doesn't impact sync, and doesn't save your allies. Moreover, despite being more aligned to Gauntlet, she lacks the ability to apply status, debuff, or apply and kind of field effect, rendering her unable to check a single gimmick in the mode.
This isn't to say that Phoebe is without value. Strong defensive supports are always good, and she has evasion stacking potential with Fail Forward, which works with Phantom Force, and Ridicure 4, which is a decently consistent. Staggering 3 is a bit more reliable than the usual Staggering 2, though it’s not as good as the 50-60%s many other supports get these days. Built-in Vigilance with Status Immunity on grid means she can run Interference Immunity as a lucky skill, effectively being immune to all major forms of disruption, which is handy.
Phoebe falls somewhere around good, but not quite great. Others have pointed it out, but if her stats were lower, you could be forgiven for considering this a BP pair. Phoebe simply fails to stand out as a support, largely due to her lack of any utility. It’s an interesting case. Defensively, she has perfect immunity to disruptions, but because she offers no offensive utility, it’s hard to stand out. Just another clear case that video games always prefer the approach of beating each other with sticks to careful defensive play, I guess.
EX, Role, and Move Level? As a support, Phoebe naturally wants 3/5, but 2/5 gets her a Potion MPR and the basis of her evade tanking set, which I personally am interested in.  EX is a good idea, as Phoebe's here to sustain, and the added stats are a huge part of that.  Her role is Tech.  She does not boost crit rate.  I cannot in good conscience recommend Phoebe for the EX Role.  It is a very, very bad fit, and we're really setting the tone that Supports are mostly gonna get blasted by damage-centric roles, rather than the Sprint thing they want.
Team 1: H!Phoebe, NC Serena, Kukui/Lucian NC Serena was the first thought as far as "needs a bit in both offenses depending on role," so that's the focus.  Serena also works well because she can debuff accuracy per Brutal Swing, tying well into Phoebe's evasion strats.  All you need from there is debuffing of the selected offense type, or someone to set up the field effect.
Team 2: H!Phoebe, SS Korrina/NY Lisia, R!Cynthia/SS Wally Phoebe aligns well with the many, many pairs that get +4 in their needed offensive stat, and Korrina in particular loves all buffs due to her Rising Tide multiplier.  Team Sharp Entry can also support someone with a Dire Hit+ style +2 crit effect, like NY Lisia.  The more speed and lower gauge cost the better though, so Lisia is at least somewhat risky.
Final Thoughts Maybe it's just disinterest, but I struggle to conceptualize a situation in which Phoebe is all that optimal.  I honestly wish she had a bit more than she does, because it's a nice outfit for her, and Cofagrigus is cool.  But, what can you do?

Okay, with the return of Master Fairs and the big discussion of “Will the anniversary Master Fairs be rerun,” I have a better question.  Now that SS Steven has both Lillie and his anniversary self’s gimmicks in his arsenal, and still gets to have good stats and multipliers, can we buff the second year anniversary units?
I don’t think this is strictly necessary, but I think the state of the game would encourage it.  With PokeFair units getting updates for being older and needing the help, it is literally a matter of like six months before SS Red gets his sync grid expansion, and SS Leaf is likely to get one too, since she’s always been the least appreciated.  SS Blue shouldn’t.  He already got one.
“If it’s not necessary, why ask for it?”  Because at this point, their every flaw was a limiting measure.  They held back solely because they weren’t sure about pushing the power scale that hard, but almost immediately decided to go for it anyway.  Anni Lillie is the only unit in the game with Brain Sync 3.  Every other option is Brain Sync 5, and Brainpower now exists on two units.  Commons get Brain Sync 5.  Valerie got Brain Sync 5, and her grid is widely considered a disaster.  There is no reason for Lillie’s sync nuke to be that bad.  And her move damage is so limited because of the sad multiplier situation that SS Korrina’s Spectral Thief, and two-bar move, deals better off-type damage.  To say nothing of Anni Steven, whose sync nuke can be bad, fine, but there’s literally no other incentive to ever mega evolve.  And, while I haven’t seen the numbers yet, I have heard that Zinniquaza’s higher stats and access to better multipliers means her Dragon Ascent is actually stronger than his.  A goddamned free unit is dealing better damage with his move, because of how hard they limited both his base stats, and his multipliers.  At that point, I think there’s no longer any excuse.  He can function fine, and I am not one to insist that Master Fairs should be the very best at everything.  But come on.  This is just pathetic at this point.  We were at a point we could argue for buffs when they dropped, and while Zones breathed new life into them, they’re very clearly not standing the test of time because their poorer base stats and bad multipliers continue to prove problematic.  If they couldn’t buff stats or grid nodes in the immediate term then, I think we’re practically owed an improvement now.
Anni Lillie Sp Atk +20, Speed +20, Recuperation 2 (4), Speedy Entry 2 (3), Furious Brain (3), Brainpower (5)
Alright, here are my recommendations.  I don’t think I’m asking for too much here.  Another 30% multiplier based on her special attack buffs is perfectly reasonable, it’s literally what SS Steven got for the same efficient setup.  It gels perfectly well with her move damage build, which is what we want.  Brainpower is perfectly reasonable, because her current sync nuke build has no remaining energy, meaning you’re giving up Brain Sync 3 or Power Flux for this comp.  Either way, it’s the justice she deserves when even commons are typically getting full 100% sync bonus multipliers.  Recuperation 2 plays into her Healthy Benefits 5.  That skill’s really good...once.  After that one use, it’s basically useless unless you can recover to full HP, which is less and less possible with AoE spam becoming a thing in the meta.  Lastly, I’m going to say she should get Speedy Entry 2.  It’s not a huge buff, but it can help with her move gauge situation.  All of this, I feel, is very simple stuff to ask for.  It’s really not that much, and wouldn’t be overpowering.  Her move damage is strong, sure, but it’s nowhere near top of what the meta can produce, and off-type like most stages in Gauntlet, it’s not even statistically average for a modern striker.  I really don’t want for much, I just want her to get the standard tools that literally everything else receives.  Brain Sync 3 is legitimately such bullshit it actually makes me mad.
Anni N +20 Sp Atk, +20 Speed, Double Down (5), Pinpoint Entry 2 (4), Speedy Entry 2 (3), Dire Hit+: Critical Eye (4)
Anni N needs the least of the group, all of his tools are fairly good, but his main issue is slow setup.  This is because, instead of just giving him Double Drop like Ghetsis or Champion Iris, they decided to give him two 10 energy nodes that have a 50/50 shot to debuff attack and special defense another 1 stage.  I get it.  It’s a limiting factor, don’t want Champion Iris to fall too far behind.  I really do get it.  Champion Iris will eventually be due for her buff as well, and god do I know what I’d want for her.  I think we’re past that point, and offense debuffs aren’t that easy to come by, just let N have this.  The other speeding up of setup is Critical Eye, for a one-click setup.  Pinpoint Entry is if you’re using someone else to self-buff while he spams Noble Roar, while Speedy Entry is just for better gauge control, because even with acceleration he can be a bit slow.  That said...this one might be too much.  I do legitimately get why they didn’t dumpster Champion Iris, I really do, and I kinda appreciate it.  He can acquire all of this on the sync nuke build and lose literally nothing for it.  Maybe that goes a bit too far.  But I don’t know.  Maybe you shouldn’t have decked him out so thoroughly while giving the others such limited tools.
Anni Steven +20 Atk, +20 Sp Atk, Ferocious Entry 2 (4), Shrewd Entry 2 (4), Clear Power-Up 3 (3) Rising Tide (5)
Anni Steven has an abundance of energy to spare on his grid, because of how...not good all of it is.  My proposal is as follows.  Ferocious Entry, the passive that Raihan has at rank 4, can be used here at rank 2, for some quick offense buffs.  Shrewd Entry would be a new passive to buff accuracy and evasion by 2 on entry as well.  With these, Mega Evolution becomes a legitimate thing to consider, because now you get a bunch of extra stats off it for Good Form.  However, even with near max buffs across the board, Good Form Dragon Ascent is still weaker than Zinniquaza’s.  Because life is unending sorrow.  So he needs Clear Power-Up 3, or some other 30% bonus, to surpass her damage.  Because that...is just goddamn sad.  Rising Tide rounds out the set.  I debated a while on this, but I’m thinking Rising Tide is justifiable as an attempt, if nothing else.  With Clear Sync 5 and 9 and three sync nodes, which costs you Fleet Feet and can’t even get the fourth because all is dust for Anni Steven, This is now a 260% multiplier on sync damage.  Even his low base stats and limited sync BP due to mega evolution can’t mess this up.  I mean, it...it can.  It still very much can.  Frankly, even with all of this, it’s not like he’s substantially out-damaging his competition as a sync nuker or a move damage user.  This main problem is, and always has been, pitifully low stats.  I don’t think anything short of completely fixing his mega evolution to take a bit less speed and a bit more offensive presence will actually save him.
