A community-led strategy to save Brazil’s dry forests from desertification

In northern Bahia state, 35 communities have come together to conserve and recover close to 100,000 acres of Caatinga dry forest in northeastern Brazil.

With the Recaatingamento project, families learn to preserve native vegetation, control the overpopulation of goat, and invest in sustainable sources of income, such as gathering wild fruits.

Affected by recurrent droughts, the Caatinga is one of the region’s most susceptible to climate change; it’s also Brazil’s third-most deforested biome, which contributes to accelerating desertification — 13% of the soil there is already sterile.

Y'all, since Christmas is almost here, I decided to show you something. I don't really relate to the northern hemisphere winter holiday spirit (for obvious reasons), and because this past week has been a very rainy one, I wanted to show you what Christmas looks like here where I live.

I really love rain and summer storms since I was a little girl. Here where I live (and in all northeastern states of Brazil) rain is always very welcomed because it doesn't rain a lot, it is a very dry region. I live near the coast so it is not so bad, but the countryside is very, very dry, the rainy season is seen as a moment of hope and joy and wealth.

But what I love the most about rainy season is how much Caatinga transforms itself. Caatinga is the semi arid biome exclusive of Brazil, and it's name means "white forest" in Tupi (an indigenous language). For reference, this is Caatinga:

You see, just as the leaves fall in autumn of temperate climates, Caatinga's trees lose their leaves during drought. Only some evergreens and cacti remain green in a ocean of ash gray and white woods.

But it only takes 2 to 3 days of consistent rain to make the white forest start becoming a very vivid green. I'm not joking.

Idk how many days it took from one photo to the other, but a change like the one above can happen in one to two weeks in the state I live. It really feels like witchcraft. The true Christmas magic for me.

In Brazil’s Caatinga, adapted agroforests are producing food from dry lands

In northeastern Brazil, the model known as Agrocaatinga has proven to be the most productive and effective in increasing food security for families, generating income and preserving native vegetation.

Previously degraded lands now produce around 50 types of food, thanks to the combination of an agroforestry system with rainwater harvesting techniques.

Agrocaatingas emerged from the commercial demand for wild passion fruit, a native fruit that today yields up to $600 per harvest for families — four times the local per capita monthly income.
