START UP ET LA JEUNESSE CAMEROUNAISE
Tumblr media

FTH 2023 Supported Organization: DigDeep/Navajo Water Project
Indigenous communities in the United States often lack access to basic infrastructural resources that are taken for granted in most other parts of the country. Among the Navajo communities in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, one-third of households do not have running water in their homes, and have no access to sewage systems. Without sinks or toilets, these families are forced to haul water in on a daily basis. In addition to the time and labor this requires of them, they end up paying an average of sixty-seven times more for this water than they would if it were piped in.
Tumblr media
The Navajo Water Project is a community-led project that brings clean hot and cold running water into American homes. Over the past six years, the Navajo Water Project has brought clean, running water to more than 300 Navajo households. They have also lit up remote homes with solar power, delivered 13 million of gallons of water, created jobs, and sustained thousands of families throughout the pandemic. They also invest in research, advocacy, and workforce development to close the Water Gap once and for all.
The Navajo Water Project is organized by DigDeep, which began its water justice work in 2013 building water systems in rural Cameroon and South Sudan. DigDeep has since shifted to working entirely in the US and expanded to include the Appalachian Water Project, which brings hot and cold running water to homes in West Virginia and Kentucky.
You can support Navajo Water Project and DigDeep as a creator in the 2023 FTH auction (or as a bidder, when the time comes to donate for the auctions you’ve won.)

Social Media’s Role in Youths Quest for Change.
The world evolves with time and many things witness a rapid or gradual swift. One of these areas that have undergone great change is that of communication. Being the vehicle of information for ages, it has undergone a lot of metamorphosis. Traditional means of communication have given birth to modern ways. In the past, communication though effective was not as smooth as it is today and this is because the world has embraced new, effective and efficient means of communication. We have examples like mails, emails, cell phones, computers, smart phones and online collaboration. All these cited means embody what is known today as the social media- the ways of interactions amongst people through the creation and sharing or exchange of information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. As examples of the social media here include Facebook, WhatsApp,  YouTube ,Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin , Tiktok, etc . It is the fastest and reliable and though an exigency for all is in the active hands of youths. Unlike in the past where youths were axed to silence through the unaccommodating means of exchange , today, the social media have come to give them the voice and they space they had been clamoring for.  It is believed that 75 percent of young people have one functional social media profile and 51 percent visit the social media daily which is partly because of their mastery of communication tool and the role the social media plays in modern day lives .This paper tries to x-ray the current place of the social media and its use as a weapon by the youths to have their voices heard and an attempt to change the narratives and perspectives. It is an opportunity to see how the social media has given to the youth, their voices to make their choices and be part of the national and international debates.
To begin with, the social media is a home for youths to share their worries which they do through advocacy and social media activism. Youths have been able to use these to raise awareness about their problems, stand as a common group to spur social change .They have succeeded to contribute their own quota to social change and a lot of issues in life. Youths have been able to be engaged in politics through the use of the social media and one can quote examples of Bobi Wine of Uganda, Kah Wallah of Cameroon and the Obedient movement in Nigeria that stood firmly behind presidential hopeful Peter Obi and are still deploring the poor conduct of the elections .Youths to denounce these ills use Hashtags  on social media handles like Instagram , Facebook ot Twitter  to express their anger and disappointment . Some examples used were that to raise awareness about the climate chahge, mental health, corruption, electoral malpractices,GBV ,  EndSARS in Nigeria etc.
In addition, the rise of the social media has given birth to new professions which are predominantly manned by youths and they have used it to jealously project their issues and even propose solutions. An example is the case of the recent FIFA world cup in Qatar where social media influencers were used to market and showcase the potentials of the host nations. This is the reason why some influencers like Cabrel Nanjip, Hoga le Pichchi, Tenor and Queen Eteme were selected from Cameroon to visit the host country, and sell the potentials of the country and of Cameroon. Their mission was to take the competition to their generation and talking about influencers, we can note that it is a newfound job handled by youths. It talks about current issues and brings general issues to the table for discussion.  like their names stipulates, they are a reference and models to youths and that explains why they can be able to rally youths and try to  brief them on the societal anomalies that they witness. Their ways of handling information are gradually replacing mainstream journalism , their closeness to the masses makes them their choice as they in most cases are agents of change . Examples of such influencers include Boitumelo Thulo,Khaby Lame,
When the Anglophone crises in Cameroon got the point that the government was arresting members of the Consortium that was manning the grievances of Anglophones, power was quickly transferred abroad. It was handled by two youths, Tapang Ivo and Mark Baretta who continued to share the aspirations of the people by directing the Anglophone crises popularly known as the struggle through the use of the social media especially Facebook and Twitter to expose the grievances of the people of the English part of Cameroon.  Given that they were far away from home, their power was only exercised through the social media. They directed and animated the struggle from a distance through daily updates on the issues on the ground and through circulars that they released online. We can conclude that they succeeded to mobilize their audience.
Still about the Anglophone crises, unlike in the past where some hideous crimes went unnoticed, the social media became the police of the people. A typical example is that killing of school children of the Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in Kumba by unidentified gun men . The drastic reaction from youths especially using  the #EndAnglopheCrisis- Cameroon hashtag  brought to the knowledge of many about the existence of the current crisis in that nation. The Norwegian Refugee Council saw it as the most ignored crisis in the world but the mobilization of the youths gave it the desired attention.
In 2020, protesters in the streets of Liberia forced their president – George Weah to succumb to their demands and put in place measures that can curb violence against women. This was triggered by a boy of 19 who is said to have mutilated the genitals of a three year old and was planning to rape her and the waves of rape cases recorded by the country since 2015.Given the power of the social media, the president can be held responsible if he fails to implement the promised measures and in that case, only an online hashtag can bring him to order.
Young women in South Africa protested in2019 against gender based violence by marching in the streets and later storming social media with a call for an end to their woes ad later marched in front of parliament urging the president to put in place a budget and a team to handle the crises, the same case occurred in Namibia when young women shared pictures  of  their October demonstration against  GBV and femicide .  Youths rose in joy when president Mugabe of Zimbabwe resigned and prayed for a new nation with the new president but three years later, were compelled to protest against the violation of human rights and the press censorship. Most of the protests were done on social media for fear of being tracked down by the regime. Thus, we can see that the social media being a tool for change is an escape road for the youths who may not use the streets but the tweets that can save many lives.
The church has not been left out of this situation because many youths now use the social media as a tool to share the gospel .The gospel through preaching is used online and messages shared through platforms by youths to other youths. The case in point is that of the passion of Christ that was celebrated last week where youths used videos from the theatric representation of the suffering of Christ to share on social media. We also have the case of young Pastor Korede Komaiya who makes a lot of money from YouTube and that is been done through preaching and evangelism. This is a clear indication that the youths use the social media for very divergent reasons and that it is an effective tool for exchanges and contact.
The social media appears to be a sharp blade in the hands of youths ready to fall any tree standing on their way. As it is now possible to use a phone to effect change, one is certain that as technology is evolving, youths being the core of it will be at the centre of any decision made to affect their destiny. The social media far from being a good tool has also been wrongly used by many youths. This has resulted in many negative acts like cyber criminality, sexual harassment and scamming. Therefore a better use of the social media by all youths can be the beginning of a new dawn especially in Africa .

This sophisticated blend of tobaccos incorporates a heavily fermented Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over Cuban-seed Nicaraguan and Dominican long fillers. 2. La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Belicoso
The highly rated #2 Cigar of the Year offers a different dynamic than the previously mentioned Connecticut wrapped cigar. This one boasts a Mexican San Andres wrapper, produced at the My Father factory, another legendary cigar making family that has been brought to the Canadian market courtesy of House of Horvath. In this blend you can expect medium-full complex flavours of sweetness and spices. Jaime Garcia and his father, Don Pepin Garcia, constantly look to break new grounds in the cigar industry, and Mi Amor Belicoso is one of the finest blends released.

3. House of Horvath 6x60 Gordo
Not every golfing cigar has to exceed $10. This HofH blend is manufactured at the Plasencia factory under the supervision of Nestor Plasencia. Construction and draw on the HofH blends have stood the test of time for years. An economically priced daily smoke that golfers can appreciate. The brand portfolio includes mild and medium-full bodied profiles and is offered in Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco blends.

Yet another classic cigar blend that can be enjoyed by many enthusiasts. Franco Bonghan Bags United States Presidential Lifetime Achievement Recognition on World Humanitarian Day 2023
Tumblr media
Franco Bonghan was among those honored with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award by the US President Joe Biden during the 2023 World Humanitarian Day celebration. The event which took place on Saturday, August 19, 2023 in Houston Texas, had the Bright Light Projects’ Executive Director recognized for his work in community development across the USA and Africa. Receiving the award on behalf of the team, Franco recounts their exploits across The United States to Sierra Leone, to Cameroon, Guinea Conakry, and Nigeria, adding that the was for all the team members. “Through this recognition, we honor and appreciate all of our team members and volunteers, even if you have given us just one hour of your time. Thank you for your endless sacrifices in helping BLP’s vision to promote BLP beneficiaries to become self-reliant and contribute positively to the development of their communities” He said that morale boosting from the Award will help them achieve a whole new thing in coming years. He further stated that the team, donors and volunteers have sacrificed in the face of challenges and that has brought them to where they are. “This year’s theme #NoMatterWhat simply amplifies the fact that you go above and beyond to serve no matter the conditions because you understand it can never be worse than the challenges facing our beneficiaries daily” he said. Through their simplistic approach to support and conduct non-partisan initiatives in rebuilding broken communities, in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGS), BLP is working in the domain of skills development, gender equality and social inclusion, human rights, community development and sustainable agriculture. Other areas are Prison Inmate Reintegration, Education (Formal & Informal), STEM Education, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) & Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). “For a long time Africa has had the wrong diagnosis” How come six decades after an inflow of charity and Humanitarian Aid, Africa is worse off” “This is because the West thinks Africa needs food and clothing to develop, but no country has ever developed from HANDOUTS. what Africa needs is skills development, innovation, and partnership as a pathway to self-reliance” “BLPs heavily emphasizes youth empowerment through skills training as our best bet for the economic transformation of the continent as we strive to achieve the United Nations Agenda 2030, and the African Union Agenda 2063.” “There is a need for increased global partnership and collaboration within the three pillars of sustainability namely: Social inclusion, economic development, and environmental protection for the greater concern for humanity”, he said. Don’t get scammed buying whiskey!!
Blog post directly from “@whiskeyscam
Follow him if you don’t already-
I've been on Twitter since 2009 and like most of you, I use it to discuss trends and hobbies, keep up with others, stay on top of emerging news, and to enjoy communicating with a wider audience. Being active on such a huge platform with over a 100 million daily users has pros and cons. One of the bigger issues is authenticity. How do you know the person you are communicating with on Twitter is a good faith account?
Twitter has always had an issue with misinformation, scams, and fake accounts but recently, especially over the past 3 years, instances of targeted fraud have sharply increased. Social media in general is now a gold mine for scammers. According to recent 2021 FTC statistics (https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/data-visualizations/data-spotlight/2022/01/social-media-gold-mine-scammers-2021), more than 25% of those who reported losing money in online fraud stated that it started on social media.
Over the years, there have been many communities develop among groups of people with similar interests on Twitter. This includes the whiskey community and, at one time, there were lots of accounts swapping samples, trading bottles, buying and selling; it was a real online marketplace for a while.
Back in 2020 during the start of the pandemic, I started to notice targeted accounts supposedly selling bottles of bourbon. These accounts started to gain a large following and, it was clear that many people were being scammed. Replies to tweets indicated dissatisfied customers, reports of non-delivery, and accusations of fraud.
These accounts were following me as well and when I enquired about things like pricing, shipping, location I started to notice inconsistencies and red flags. I also started to see trends between accounts, such as the phrasing used and images shared. Most were very similar and using images stolen from other legitimate accounts and websites. When these issues were brought up, I was promptly blocked.
After confirming scams with some of their victims, I decided to create Whiskey Scam Alert (@WhiskeyScam on Twitter) to try and help track and expose these scammers targeting our community. Initially, I thought this issue was quite small. However, over the past two years and through collaboration with other like-minded individuals and groups, I determined that these scams are part of large multinational criminal networks involved in all sorts of fraudulent online activities targeting every type of product and activity possible.
These social media accounts are the leading edge of the whole network, enticing victims deep into specialized merchandise scams (like bourbon and other whiskies), firearms, online adult content, cryptocurrencies, cannabis, illegal drugs, pharmaceuticals, even taxidermy and hay supply. You name it, there’s a scam for it.
About Typical Whiskey Scams on Twitter
I discovered that most of the whiskey scam accounts on Twitter are operating out of western Africa (Cameroon, Nigeria, etc). Some of these scams are desperate kids trying to make a buck, but many of the more successful accounts are part of organized networks that have set up sophisticated operations involving websites, sales, intermediaries, and bank accounts. The scams will often involve more than one country in order to confuse victims and complicate investigations. Most involve what’s referred to as a non-delivery scam, where you pay for a product that does not exist and will never be shipped. Some scam accounts simply set the bait and wait for their victims to contact them, while others actively pursue their marks.
On Twitter, scammers create profiles with false identities using fake photos to attract potential victims. They steal images and video of rare whiskies and then offer them at reasonable prices to bait people into buying. The social media accounts are often set up to direct traffic to their larger website operations. These scam websites often look completely legitimate.
Scammers prefer to use direct messages (DMs), SMS, WhatsApp, or email and anonymous payments such as crypto, gift cards, wire transfer, Zelle, Venmo, and Cash App. If you push for more secure payments, they will have pre-planned excuses at the ready. Then, when you've already paid, they often introduce a fraudulent shipping company or insurance arrangement. This is another scam to get more of your money. They will appear legit with login credentials, tracking numbers etc. All fake. You may be asked to continue paying invented fees until you realize you've been had. Some folks are taken for thousands. Scams constantly evolve and they change tactics once they stop being effective.
Avoiding Common Whiskey Scams Online:
There are often 3 major red flags in these types of scams:
The 1st is unsolicited contact. Sellers jumping into your mentions or DMs to sell you bottles on Twitter is not something a legit seller would usually do. At this point you should be asking yourself: Did I initiate this contact? Do I know this person? Did I ask for this?
The 2nd is urgency. Scammers want to get the deal done quickly. Boiler room tactics are a major red flag. Take your time and think the deal through.
The 3rd is that at some point they're going to demand payment, usually through unconventional means such as gift cards, wire transfer, or apps like Zelle, Venmo, and Cash App.
Don't Become a Victim:
The first tip is - do not buy bottles on Twitter or other social media! But if you must, then:
Do your research! Purchase from reputable dealers. Check Twitter accounts selling whiskey before you make any purchases.
Avoid those too-good-to-be-true offers. This should be common sense but so many people get hooked. Scammers rely on the open and trusting nature of this community as well as the attraction to rare bottles at good prices. Legitimate businesses run sales, but if a deal is hard to believe, you need to take a second look.
Don’t buy a bottle from a stranger online without confirming it physically somehow. That seller who says he's in Louisville has never even been to Kentucky. On Twitter, most of these scams are run out of African countries and there is no product at all.
Watch out for sellers initiating contact, especially via social media. That new account with the loads of pretty photos of hard-to-find bottles that just DM'd you? Very likely it’s a scam. Legitimate businesses rarely contact first, and if they do it's usually through a clear form of direct marketing.
Conduct a reverse image search of the picture of the bottle you are considering. If the same picture appears on multiple websites or social media posts, it’s a fraud. You can also search for distinctive text from ads or testimonials, to see if the seller copied it from another website.
Watch for a sense of urgency. Scammers want this deal done quickly so they can run off with your money. They want to strike fast before you've had any time to think it through carefully.
Think before making unconventional payments. Scammers prefer gift cards, wire transfer, or apps like Zelle, Venmo, and Cash App. When using these apps, transfers are not protected unlike payments on a traditional credit or debit card. These payment methods offer no way to get your money back if you are the victim of fraud.
Determine the fair price for the bottle you are considering. If someone advertises rare bottles at deeply discounted prices, it's a fraud.
What to do if You've Been Scammed
If you've been a victim of these scams, in the US you can report the site or account to the Better Business Bureau, your State Attorney's General office, and contact your credit card company about its fraud protection policies.
Contact your bank as soon as you know you've been the subject of fraud. Advise them and ask for guidance.

When you come across an amazing deal or bottle for sale on social media, step back for a moment and think. Some profile clicks. A quick 10-second search of replies and mentions. That's all it usually takes to research an account before getting sucked into a scam. The speed of social media has people out of the habit of investigating before spending. If you do some basic research and ask yourself some questions in these situations, you're very unlikely to get scammed.

Education Inequalities A massive amount of people on this globe do not have resources that allow them access to education, and a majority of them are children in unprivileged societies.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Those living in north-eastern Africa are the least likely to receive a good education – or any education at all. It ranks the world's poorest countries according to their education systems. Somalia has the least functional system in the world with just 10% of children going to primary school, while Eritrea is second worst.
Haiti, Comoros and Ethiopia fare almost as badly. Before Haiti's earthquake this year, just 50% of children went to primary school. Now that figure is said to have fallen. Some 2.5 million children were left without a school to go to after the earthquake.
Here are 10 of the greatest challenges in global education:
A Lack of Funding for Education Money isn’t everything, but it is a key foundation for a successful education system.
Having No Teacher, or Having an Untrained Teacher We’re facing multiple challenges when it comes to teachers. Not only are there not enough teachers globally to achieve universal primary education (let alone secondary), but many of the teachers that are currently working are also untrained, leading to children failing to learn the basics, such as maths and language skills. Globally, the UN estimates that 69 million new teachers are required to achieve universal primary and secondary education by 2030. Meanwhile, in one out of three countries, less than three-quarters of teachers are trained to national standards.
No Classroom This seems like a pretty obvious one – if you don’t have a classroom, you don’t really have much of a chance of getting a decent education. But again, that’s a reality for millions of children worldwide. Children in many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are often squeezed into overcrowded classrooms, classrooms that are falling apart, or are learning outside.
A Lack of Learning Materials Outdated and worn-out textbooks are often shared by six or more students in many parts of the world. In Tanzania, for example, only 3.5% of all grade 6 pupils had sole use of a reading textbook. In Cameroon, there are 11 primary school students for every reading textbook and 13 for every mathematics textbook in grade 2. Workbooks, exercise sheets, readers and other core materials to help students learn their lessons are in short supply. Teachers also need materials to help prepare their lessons, share with their students, and guide their lessons.
The Exclusion of Children with Disabilities Despite the fact that education is a universal human right, being denied access to school is common for the world’s 93 million children with disabilities. In some of the world’s poorest countries, up to 95% of children with disabilities are out of school. A combination of discrimination, lack of training in inclusive teaching methods among teachers, and a straightforward lack of disabled accessible schools leave this group uniquely vulnerable to being denied their right to education.
Being the ‘Wrong’ Gender gender is one of the biggest reasons why children are denied an education. Despite recent advances in girls’ education, a generation of young women has been left behind. Over 130 million young women around the world are not currently enrolled in school. At least one in five adolescent girls around the world is denied an education by the daily realities of poverty, conflict and discrimination.Poverty forces many families to choose which of their children to send to school. Girls often miss out due to belief that there’s less value in educating a girl than a boy. Instead, they are sent to work or made to stay at home to look after siblings and work on household chores.
Living in a Country in Conflict or at Risk of Conflict There are many casualties of any war, and education systems are often destroyed. While this may seem obvious, the impact of conflict cannot be overstated. In 2017, around 50 million children were living in countries affected by conflicts, with 27 million of them out of school, according to UNICEF. Conflict prevents governments from functioning, teachers and students often flee their homes, and continuity of learning is greatly disrupted. In total, 75 million children have had their education disrupted by conflict or crisis, including natural disasters that destroy schools and the environment around them.
Distance from Home to School For many children around the world, a walk to school of up to three hours in each direction is not uncommon. This is just too much for many children, particularly those children with a disability, those suffering from malnutrition or illness, or those who are required to work around the household. Imagine having to set off for school, hungry, at 5 a.m. every day, not to return until 7pm. Many children, especially girls, are also vulnerable to violence on their long and hazardous journeys to and from school.
Hunger and Poor nutrition The impact of hunger on education systems is gravely underreported. Being severely malnourished, to the point it impacts on brain development, can be the same as losing four grades of schooling. Around 171 million children in developing countries are stunted by hunger by the time they reach age 5. Stunting can affect a child’s cognitive abilities as well as their focus and concentration in school. As a result, stunted children are 19% less likely to be able to read by age eight. Conversely, good nutrition can be crucial preparation for good learning.
The Expense of Education In many developing countries, over the last decades governments have announced the abolition of school fees and as a result, seen impressive increases in the number of children going to school. But for many of the poorest families, school remains too expensive and children are forced to stay at home doing chores or work themselves.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS? Donations You can donate money to the charities that funds education.
Fill Teacher Gaps On current trends, some countries will not even be able to meet their primary school teacher needs by 2030. The challenge is even greater for other levels of education. Thus, countries need to activate policies that begin to address the vast shortfall.
At this primary school in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, there are 174 learners in one class. Many children don’t turn up to school because the learning conditions are so poor.
Attract the Best Candidates to Teaching It is important for all children to have teachers with at least a good secondary-level qualification. Therefore, governments should invest in improving access to quality secondary education to enlarge the pool of good teacher candidates. Policy-makers need to focus their attention on hiring and training teachers from under-represented groups, such as ethnic minorities.
Train Teachers to Meet the Needs of All Children All teachers need to receive training to enable them to meet the learning needs of all children. Before teachers enter the classroom, they should undergo good quality pre-service teacher education programmes and they need ongoing training so as to develop and strengthen their teaching skills and adapt to changes such as new curriculum. Teachers should be trained to teach multiple grades and ages in one classroom, in multi-lingual classrooms, and to understand how teachers’ attitudes to gender differences can affect learning outcomes.
Hadiza is a teacher in Maradi, Niger. “As soon as I got my secondary school certificate I started teaching. I was trained in 45 days and then started my career as a teacher. When I started teaching I quickly understood that the training I received was not sufficient for me to teach well. There are many challenges in teaching and I think without good capacities and some experience we are not able to handle the challenges.
Provide Better Data on Trained Teachers Countries should invest in collecting and analysing annual data on the number of trained teachers available throughout the country, including characteristics such as gender, ethnicity and disability, at all levels of education. These data should be complemented by information on the capacity of teacher education programmes, with an assessment of the competencies teachers are expected to acquire. Internationally agreed standards need to be established for teacher education programmes so that their comparability is ensured.
More and better data on teacher salaries in low and middle income countries are also needed to enable national governments and the international community to monitor how well teachers are paid and to raise global awareness of the need to pay them well.

Morocco Advanced to Its First Quarterfinal; Portugal Served Switzerland A Breadstick
Tumblr media
Morocco celebrates as it advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time (📸 Reuters)
Two contrasting matches closed the knock-out stage and the first two and a half weeks of football. Against all odds, Morocco advanced to their first World Cup quarterfinal, defeating Spain in an intense penalty shootout duel 3-0 (with a preceding 0-0 draw in regular time). On the other hand, Portugal partied hard, serving Switzerland the breadstick (6-1) (in tennis set terms, it is a breadstick) to secure itself a place in the quarterfinals against Morocco.
Morocco v. Spain
The last day of the knock-out stage started with the match-up between Morocco and Spain. On paper, it looked tough for Morocco to pass Spain, as Spain had a positive head-to-head record. However, Morocco's aggressive counter-attacking style proved to overwhelm Spain during both the regular and the extra times of the match, prompting the match outcome to be decided by a penalty shootout.
The pace was slower in the first half compared to the second. One notable chance from Spain came from Gavi, where the ball hit the bar instead, and Marco Asensio, who passed the ball to Dani Olmo on the left, which the ball went too wide afterward. That happened despite Morocco starting early with an on-target chance from Achraf Hakimi after a free kick, which was saved by Unai Simon. The first half of the regular time ended up goalless.
However, there was a noticeably increased intensity starting at the end of the second half of the regular time onwards to the extra times, only for neither side successfully score a goal. However, Spain scored their first chance on target when Asensio's free-kick was received by Dani Olmo from the left, which was saved by Yassine Bounou. The entrance of Nico Williams (replacing Ferran Torres) also proved the Spanish ability to raise their level, lacking penetration and direction while Morocco, albeit not having a shot in the second half, defended well with their tackles and interceptions.
The intensity increased in the two halves of the extra time, with several other notable chances from Alvaro Morata, for example, where not only was he not able to pass the ball to the nearby player (since there were no Spanish players who stood by) but also he executed the ball too far near the last minutes of the match around two times. Conversely, Morocco played more to the back throughout this extra time, which was lacking in regular time. One of their notable chances in the extra time came from Walid Cheddira, who fired the ball right to the penalty box, which was saved by Unai Simon. When the final whistle blew by the end of the extra time, it indeed boiled down to the penalty shootout.

The proceedings of the penalty shootout (📸 self-illustrated)
Bounou became the hero of the penalty shootout, adding his name to the goalkeepers that were able to save 3 penalties in the same match during the penalty shootout, right after Dominik Livakovic from Croatia (against Japan). He saved three Spanish penalties, which were taken by (in turns) Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler, and Sergio Busquets; while Morocco's Abdelhamid Sabiri, Hakim Ziyech, and Achraf Hakimi scored for Morocco's victory and their first World Cup quarterfinal. As hard as the Spanish side practiced their preparation, the accuracy was something else (including the goalkeeper).
In fact, they became the fourth African country (and the first from the North) to advance to the quarterfinals, besides Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002), and Ghana (2010). They will face the winner of Portugal v. Switzerland, where summaries could be found below.
Portugal v. Switzerland

Gonçalo Ramos celebrated one of his goals against Switzerland (📸 Getty Images via Sporting News)
The last Round of 16 match saw Portugal take Switzerland, where Cristiano Ronaldo started from the bench for the first time. This decision was made by Fernando Santos for tactical reasons, added to how he also started Diego Dalot and Raphael Guerreiro, for example, likely knowing the Swiss' offensive capability from their previous matches. While initially looked questionable, this decision proved its worth from the way Portugal started this game, and they never looked back since.
Portugal started quickly with a possible early chance, despite Switzerland trying their best to defend. Freuler initially had his chance in 10' after going solo, but it went too wide. Portugal's Gonçalo Ramos started the goal party by responding to the throw brought to Joao Felix, who caught Yann Sommer off-guard with the way he picked his angle at 17'. He then managed to score two more goals, which were scored at 50' (in response to Dalot's corner) and a smooth chip after receiving the ball from Raphael Guerreiro on the right, who breached the Swiss defense at 54'.
The other 3 Portuguese goals came in this order: Pepe's accurate header at 33' (no one indeed saw that coming), which made him the second oldest goal scorer in the World Cup right after Roger Milla; Raphael Guerreiro at 55', where he scored right from G. Ramos' assistance; and Rafael Leao, where he scored right to the penalty box during the injury time (90+2') and once again caught Sommer off-guard. Unfortunately, an earlier goal from Cristiano Ronaldo was ruled offside from the way he entered right before the goal.
Switzerland had its chances, for example when Xherdan Shaqiri attacked close to the pitch but to no avail in the first half, but to no avail. They got back in the game for a while with Manuel Akanji's goal at 57', where he scored right after the corner. Although they slightly controlled the ball possession, they fell a long way to the Portuguese's freer offensive capabilities, where its precision enabled them to serve Switzerland a breadstick by the end of this match, which looked almost one-sided toward the end of the match.
General Knock-Out Stage Situation
Tumblr media
The current bracket of the knock-out stage (📸 Eurosport)
Three confederations are represented in the quarterfinals that will start this Friday, which are UEFA (England, France, Netherlands, Croatia, and Portugal) for Europe, CONMEBOL (Argentina and Brazil) for South America, and CAF (Morocco) for Africa. On paper, one of the toughest-looking matches is the Total Football Battle between Netherlands v. Argentina and England v. France, where the defense-to-offense play will be tested.
However, equally intense with those two matches, came Brazil v. Croatia, a revenge-looking match considering their past match-ups. This is where peak Brazil looked favored to win, although Croatia might find themselves fighting to the end once again like in 2018. Another interesting match-up came in Morocco v. Portugal, with the former looking forward to advancing to its first World Cup semifinal, carrying the weight of the region and the continent. This stand-off will be slightly previewed below.
Morocco v. Portugal
Tumblr media
Morocco v. Portugal broadcast illustration (📸 SBS On Demand)
While both sides proved to be more offensive during their matches, despite the different outcomes, Portugal would face an interesting question on their choice to start or not to start Cristiano Ronaldo. For tactical reasons, this question could prove evenly similar to yesterday's match: the Moroccan offensive capabilities (especially knowing their keys such as Hakim Ziyech, Sofyan Amrabat, and Sofiane Boufal, Achraf Hakimi, among others). Besides, Morocco has yet to concede a goal (apart from Nafuel Aguerd's own goal), making their defensive capabilities also to be tested.
Record-wise, besides the loss against South Korea in the third match of the group stage, they had been solid by defeating Ghana and Uruguay. Morocco, apart from not conceding a goal, had a slightly more confident record by defeating Belgium and Canada and tying Croatia in a goalless draw, even drawing Spain at 0-0 before winning the match in the penalty shootout. Considering both's capabilities, and outside of their defending capabilities, it all might really boil down to how these teams convert their chances (and possible chances), and take the advantage of the others' loopholes.
If this is not done in regular time, there could also be a possible drama, knowing Morocco. It is definitely worth seeing what is going to happen next.
