anyone want to hear my six of crows x jane austen's emma au. yes of course you do don't be silly. the only person allowed to be silly is me as I descend into madness in the course of trying to cast this. (if you think 'I've heard this before' yes I've posted abt it before tho I think it was on my main)

kaz is emma, a bored, overintelligent rich bitch stuck in a country house with a bunch of shit idiot neighbours and almost no one to entertain or match him. fucking useless dad per haskell / mr woodhouse is a weaksauce hypochrondriac, and jordie / isabella has gone and got married and ditched kaz, the bastard. the only consolation is their neighbour inej / mr knightley, who is rich, sensible, popular, and elegible as hell... glory be, an intellectual equal for kaz!

in order to be less bored, kaz takes on a protege, mysterious randomer and natural son wylan / harriet smith, who kaz decides to mould in his own image and make a good match for. wylan is in love with gentleman farmer jesper / robert martin, but kaz is a snob and tries to push him towards local vicar kuwei / mr elton (I KNOW. I'M SORRY KUWEI), but that all goes tits up bc turns out kaz is a fucking terrible matchmaker, who'd've known.

meanwhile, unassuming and a little cold, but locally well-liked matthias / jane fairfax has arrived back in the village, and kaz busily commences hating on him because he's another accomplished young man and he makes him feel inadequate. hot on his heels comes the mysterious nina / frank churchill (NINA I'M SO SORRY I FUCKING HATE FRANK BUT THIS IS WHAT WORKS FOR THE COUPLES YOU CAN BE A NICE FRANK CHURCHILL ): ), who kaz is kind of fascinated by and enjoys sparring with, and hence kind of misses the really obvious signs that nina and matthias are secretly engaged, even though inej, ever thief of secrets, has lowkey noticed something's up, like matthias getting mysterious gifts from someone. kaz ends up being convinced that possibly it's inej that's pursuing matthias, which nina encourages because it helps her cover, and kaz kinda panics.

everyone has petty village drama which culiminates when kaz sneers at pekka rollins / miss bates (LISTEN. LI actually you don't need to listen bc I laughed out loud when I thought of this comparison but hear me out, if you just think of it as the equivalent of the church of barter scene except instead of 'I buried him' it's 'when have you ever stopped at three?' it kind of works. sorry to miss bates tho who is still kinda my fave austen character) at box hill, which culminates in inej going BOY WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM and kaz is like wow she kind of has a point should I be a better person :/

uhh what else even happens. there's a ball after nina massively encourages one, inej saves wylan from being partnerless and later dances with kaz (think of the gloveless dance scene from the 2020 adaptation? yeah? yeahh??). the regency gender conventions here are getting so messed up lmao, never mind. in emma harriet fancies herself in love with mr knightley and emma is forced to realise that she likes him, so let's say that wylan pretends to be after inej, in order to strong arm kaz into realising that he's wanted to marry inej this entire time. wylan's dad turns out to be minted (I'm stretching the book here to make it work w SOC but never mind) but that's after kaz has admitted he fucked up and sent wylan off to marry gentleman farmer jesper, yaaay. nina's relatives who are stopping her from marrying matthias die and hence there's a massive revelation with 'oh they were engaged this whole time lol', kaz is PISSED bc he didn't clock it. uh. everyone gets married and now kaz can escape the shit village and actually go places. the end.

[Post Office] and breakfast at 10 20/60 came upstairs a little before 11, and from then to one packing my light things, etc. etc.

At 1 went downstairs to read the morning service had just read as far as to the end of the psalms and fell asleep till two - at 2 sent of my note to Mrs. William Priestley Lightcliffe from then to 6 20/60 looking over the plans of the estate etc. - note from Mrs. W.P- [William Priestley] she will take John's daughter Martha at midsummer - 'I think with regret of your departure, but still indulge the cheering hope of one day (tho' I fear distant) enjoying some of your society - my wishes - or I ought rather to say - a fuller expression of them - are fettered by existing circumstances' - what can this mean? oh tis that I could not be here with my father and therefore she will not wish it - Dinner at 6 1/2 - from 7 40/60 to 10 35/60 wrote 3 pages very small and close to my aunt - and then came to my room - Rainy morning till about 10, or should have gone to church in the gig - afterwards fine day -

The online records for parts of Yorkshire are magic, I can go back to the 1690s in places!

I'm a little iffy on these latest dates tho - "Mathew Weighil" doesn't seem to exist apart from the record of his marriage to "Mercy Myles", and her records show her to be around 44 when their (possibly their, the transcription only says Mathew as father, no mention of the mum) daughter Christiana was born, which is pretty goddamn late even these days, let alone 1746 - unless there's another Mercy Myles who was born later and who's baptism hasn't been digitised, or Mathew Weighil uhhhh married someone else later than the record I have or idk what else

Or I mean. She could've been 44, it's physically possible, even if it sounds incredibly dangerous

If I have Mercy Myles right, then her mum (Christiana Merington) was 38 when Mercy was born, which also sounds tricky (but is definitely possible, that's the same age as a couple of my aunts were when they each had their sons)

What's another spelling for Weighil, where the fuck is this man

I know he existed, he had like 5 kids. Possibly by two different women, or else there were two Matthew Weighil's, but what kind of name is that??

Oh! Wighill? It's the right village at the right time. Maybe they changed vicars or curates or whatever and the new guy couldn't spell. Or the automatic transcription is fucking me about, I bet it's that. I can't look at a scan of any of these records, so I can't tell

So so wait, was Mercy Myles Christiana's mum, or was it Rachel? The name fits for Mercy, but uhhh gotta check who Rachel is

Rachel Weighil doesn't seem to exist except as mother to her children, and there's no marriage for a Matthew Weighil/Wighill in the right village for anyone else, except oh someone called Elizabeth, ahh what oh no, so hm. Complicated. :/ Time to give up this branch, actually, what the fuck

Kicking off the hiatus with 5.04

A few people have requested that I continue my commentaries™ during the hiatus & after all the positive feedback, I couldn’t say no! But I expected to have an awful day & it actually went well so I thought I’d go ahead and do it now. He got into university👏🏼 that was legit me though 😂 I’m so irrational and literally only applied to one university (well I filled out many applications but didn’t submit any others because you gotta pay so I tried to wait and see if I got accepted to where I wanted first😂) I found out in English while on my phone instead of doing work & I screamed and just ran out the classroom 😂 I went to my guidance councilor and told everyone in the main office and then called my parents who *were nervous I wouldn’t get in* but also were literally going through security in the airport on their way to Dominican Republic .. ah, I was full of excitement and hope. Look at me now 3 semesters in &I’m over it 😂😂 it’s so stressful and mentally/emotionally draining and sometimes I’m just like how do I become a trophy wife asap?
