Cycling, a sport that inspires me
Tumblr media
A love of cycling
I discovered my passion for bicycles when I was very young. Before getting on a motorbike, I had already tried it all on my bicycle. For me, it was as if my bicycle were a motorbike! I started riding motorbikes from a very young age, but at that time I thought that if it didn’t work out, I wanted to be a cyclist.
Now I only go cycling to stay in shape and enjoy myself. I love cycling up mountain passes and I get a kick out of beating my times whenever I do the same route again. I have to keep myself in check so that I don’t go overboard and get carried away. It’s not a good idea to go flat out every day. You have to be smart when training and know when to take a break for a few days. Even though I don’t cycle professionally, I take it seriously and get annoyed when I see that my times are off and when my pace is not as good as the last time.
Another thing I like about cycling is that you can adapt it to your own fitness level. For example, during winter I remove the outer chainring as I barely use it. When my legs feel stronger, I look for the best way to improve, adding the chainring or really upping my cadence.
The best part is cycling as a group. The time and distance fly by when you are in good company, and it is also a way of getting better quality training. I still enjoy the days that I cycle alone though as it’s a different approach; I have to look for motivation from within.

Bicycle collector
The bicycle itself plays a big role and I use a Pinarello Dogma F10 fitted with Shimano. The key to choosing a bicycle is to find one that fits just right, that weighs very little, and that has a high quality carbon frame, not forgetting about the look of the bike.
Years ago, I decided to start a collection of all of my bikes because of all the unforgettable memories and experiences I’ve had on them. Many of my sporting accomplishments have been achieved when using cycling for training. I have fond memories of those tough times that I faced, pedalling with all my strength on a steep climb.
I now have a wonderful collection of Pinarellos. It is a selection of bikes that represents the changing times and fashions and when you look at them all together, you can see the differences in technology and colours used over the years.
Tumblr media
A passion for professional cycling
Purito was my favourite cyclist because of his explosive power, but now that he is retired, I have my eye on other Spanish cyclists, like Alejandro Valverde and Alberto Contador. I’m also looking forward to seeing who will be the next rising star to keep us entertained. In recent years, Froome, Quintana, Nibali and Alberto Contador are the cyclists we’ve seen competing for the big titles. So who knows who might surprise us this year.
If I had to choose my favourite cycling stage it would definitely be the Alps. I’ve had a great time cycling there myself and it’s the best area. The Dolomites stages are really tough and I’ve suffered cycling up those passes, but it feels amazing when you finally reach the top.
When watching cycling on TV, I prefer to watch the bigger tours. I tend to watch them more often, although it is easy to get hooked on the classics with the exciting shows they put on.
Tumblr media
My experience cycling
I have taken part in a tour cycling race before, and I know that in this sport it’s difficult to position yourself, to know if the group got broken up, or if you’re at the front. That is why it’s vital to wear an earpiece because it helps a lot in this regard. There has been a lot of talk about whether using an earpiece disrupts the competition, but nobody can deny that it increases rivalry between the cyclists and makes for a better show.
I’ve sometimes thought about taking part in Paris-Roubaix, but when I consider how tough it is, it puts me off. My brother has cycled in it. He has told me what it’s like and to be honest, it looks way easier on TV than it is in real life. I don’t think it would be my favourite race if I ever did cycle in it.
I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about my passion for cycling. As always, thanks to all Box Repsol followers for reading and for your unconditional support. See you at the track!

Hardcore Cycles Builds a Championship-Caliber Chopper for Sebastian Vettel
In case you weren’t tuning in this past weekend, Sebastian Vettel bludgeoned the Formula 1 field one last time for 2013 at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In doing so, the 26-year-old German phenom tied the records for the most grand prix wins in a single season (13) and the most grand prix wins in succession (nine, with a chance to set a new record if he can win the 2014 season opener). Not a bad way to end the season of your fourth consecutive world championship. So, how does Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s superstar shoe plan to spend his off season? Well, we’d guess he’ll be spending some time with family and friends, and enjoying being able to sleep in on the weekends. But we also wouldn’t be surprised if the self-professed motorcycle nut spends at least a little time riding the sweet chopper you see here.
Tumblr media
Built by Vettel’s countryman Marcus Walz and his team at Hardcore Cycles, this regal blue bike was actually built in 2011 to commemorate Seb’s first world championship in 2010. But other than the rear fender art denoting only the 2010 title and Vettel’s car number from that season – 5 – on the stylized lower leading edge of the frame, this proper chopper (based on Hardcore Cycles’ Dragstyle model) looks bang-up-to-date. The spokes of the one-off wheels incorporate Vettel’s personal logo, as does the embroidery on the Alcantara saddle. The heads of the rumbling V-twin engine feature carbon fiber detailing, and the swoopy airbox is also carbon fiber and is emblazoned with the German flag and “S. Vettel,” just like the champ’s office. In addition to the deep blue paint that matches that of the Red Bull F1 cars, both sides of the gas tank features pinstriping that forms the outline of the energy drink conglomerate’s charging bull logo. And a list of the tracks that comprised the 2010 F1 schedule encircles the seat. Throw in all the other cool touches you expect to find on a Walz design (such as the lovingly machined, drilled gearshift and clutch arms and footpeg supports) and you have a bitchin’ belt-drive bike that any motorcycle enthusiast – super successful racecar driver or otherwise – would be proud to own. Is this bike the reason Vettel keeps on winning? Don’t be silly; his prodigious talent, dedication to his craft, dedication from the team, and some truly kickass car designs from the fertile mind of Adrian Newey are the sources of the kid’s success. However, that’s not to say that wanting to finish races as quickly as possible so he can get home and go for a ride sooner doesn’t have anything to do with his dominance…

Czech Icon, Reborn: Praga ZS 800 from @praga_cars and chief designer Jan Žuži (@jz_handmade) — a modern incarnation of the iconic J.F. Koch-designed 1928 Praga BD 500, said to be the first production DOHC motorcycle. “The brainchild of Jan Žuži, an engineer working on the lightweight 700 hp luxury Praga Bohema hypercar, the ZS 800 began life as a passion project to create a BD 500 remake…a modern reimagining that retains the character and design of its ancestral BD 500.” Chrome molybdenum steel frame, ultra-lightweight titanium exhaust system, hand-woven carbon wheels, hydraulic drum brakes, sculpted front fork with fully adjustable Öhlins suspension and titanium spring, Öhlins suspended saddle, and a 773cc air-cooled four-stroke parallel twin engine with bevel gear cam drive and Euro5 compliance. More than 300 hours of five-axis machining is said to go into every build, and the extensive use of lightweight materials means the ZS 800 weighs just 142kg (313 lbs), with 50:50 weight distribution. Praga, founded in 1907 and makers of the 700-hp / 2164-lb Bohema hypercar, plans to make just 28 of the bikes with delivery in mid 2023. 1993 Ducati Supermono Desmoquattro
549 CC air-cooled single-cylinder engine with desmodromic valves 6-Speed Gearbox 75 BHP at 10,000 RPM Dry weight under 121 kg
The Supermono was one of the most innovative racing motorcycles ever produced when it was built in the early 1990s for the well-known Sound of Singles racing series. They have grown to be some of the most sought-after Ducatis with only 67 ever being built. The Supermono, with the single-cylinder engine, acquired the balance of a V-Twin by combining the horizontal front cylinder from the 888 Corsa with a counterbalancing second connecting rod. Large inlet and exhaust valves, 50mm throttle bodies, and twin fuel injectors were some of the additional characteristics carried over from the racing V-Twin. The bike's aluminum swingarm was directly attached to the crankcase and gearbox casting, and the steel-tube frame was constructed in accordance with Ducati's well-known trellis pattern. With the exception of the engine side covers, top yoke, and wheels, which were made of magnesium, carbon fiber was used extensively, resulting in a dry weight under 121 kg.

Vélos Advancements Brings Sustainability to Super Bikes
Let’s face it, producing carbon fiber bikes isn’t the most environmentally friendly process. Metal frames can often be repaired (sometimes carbon can too), and the excess tubing, shavings, and even the frames can be recycled. You can’t say that for carbon fiber frames. New Zealand brand Vélos Advancements is changing that by bringing sustainability to building frames, similar to the approach of…

1976 François Knorreck’s 1000cc Laverda Snaefell Sidecar.François Knorreck, a French motorcyclist with a passion for building things to suit his own vision, bought a Laverda in 1976 and turned it into a nicely modified sportbike. He rode the bike perfectly satisfied until 1993 when he began to conceive the idea of a new project and got the urge to build again, ideas turned to design and led to lots and lots of labor, the result, more than 10 years later, is the Snaefell, a Laverda based sidecar outfit that demonstrates some phenomenal skills in both design and building.
The Snaefell is a completely hand crafted vehicle, the frame, the wiring harness and, of course, the amazing body, which itself used 63 molds for the parts made of polyester or carbon fiber. Some parts were sourced from Renault, Citroen, BMW, VW and Audi. The entire 10,000 hour project comes in around 15,000 Euros, which, at today’s rates, is about $21,000. Power is from the original 1000cc Laverda triple which gets a matching triple exhaust out the back of the bodywork. The interior, complete with seatbelts, looks like a factory build. The door opens up Lamborghini style. Just stunning work.
Complex projects like these, where the builder does so many things so well, in his spare time, just continue to amaze everyone. Superb work all around.

Technology and Innovation in Cycling
Tumblr media
The world of cycling is undergoing a remarkable transformation, fuelled by advances in technology and innovation. This evolution is not just about the bikes we ride but encompasses every facet of cycling, from performance and safety to the very experience of riding itself.
High-Tech Materials: Lighter, Stronger Bikes
The quest for speed and efficiency has led to the adoption of high-tech materials in bike construction. Carbon fibre has become the gold standard for high-performance bikes, offering an unparalleled blend of lightness and strength. Innovations in metallurgy and composite materials have also allowed for more durable, yet lightweight frames and components, enabling cyclists to achieve greater speeds with less effort.
Smart Cycling: Connectivity and Data
In the digital age, connectivity has found its way onto the cycling paths. GPS-enabled devices and cycling computers provide riders with real-time data on speed, distance, and heart rate, while also offering navigation and route planning. Smart helmets incorporate built-in speakers, microphones, and even rear-view cameras, enhancing both convenience and safety. Furthermore, mobile apps and wearables have turned cycling into a connected experience, offering tracking, coaching, and social sharing capabilities.
E-Bikes: Democratizing Cycling
Electric bikes, or e-bikes, represent one of the most significant advancements in the cycling world. By combining pedal power with electric assistance, e-bikes lower the barrier to entry, making cycling accessible to a broader audience. They've become a game-changer for urban commuting, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation methods, and have even found their niche in mountain biking and cargo transport.
Safety and Sustainability: Innovations for a Better Ride
Advancements in cycling technology have also focused on safety and sustainability. LED lights, reflective materials, and electronic braking systems have made riding safer in low-visibility conditions. Meanwhile, cycling infrastructure has benefited from technology, with smart bike lanes and traffic systems improving coexistence with vehicular traffic. These innovations not only protect cyclists but also encourage more people to consider cycling as a viable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The Horizon: What's Next in Cycling Innovation
As we look to the future, the potential for further innovation in cycling is boundless. Concepts like augmented reality cycling glasses, which can display vital information and alerts directly in the cyclist's field of vision, and further developments in bike-sharing and autonomous technology promise to redefine our cycling experience.

Top Fuel 9.8 is a full suspension carbon mountain bike for riders who don't settle. Not for parts nor for one style of riding. It combines a high-end component package with a low-weight carbon frame for one unbelievably fun rig that's fast on flow and fun to ride on techy singletrack.
