[ID: A photograph of a corner of my living room; in front of a white screen, a fake Christmas tree is covered in ornaments. The tree itself is bare branches with small white bulbs on it, and lest you think this is rather sad looking, know that I love this tree because despite its creepiness and slight instability, it is the perfect way to show off my ornaments.]
The tree is trimmed! And with that, we bring National Clean Your Home Month to a close.
Dearborn was unimpressed by my tree-trimming and, after one of the ornaments suffered a tragedy, hid in the coats. She is our resident Grinch, but she's cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two photos; left, my hand with palm open, holding a baroque crescent moon ornament. It is in several pieces after I dropped it on the ground, but I'm pretty sure I can fix it. Second image, my coat closet, with two large fabric bins on the floor; sitting on the top bin, mostly hidden by a number of jackets and hoodies, Dearborn the tortie peers up pensively at the camera.]
I didn't get everything done on my cleaning list, but that's okay; I did get a lot done, and I realized stuff like "clean the bathroom" needs to wait anyway, since the HVAC system is in the bathroom and I'll just have to clean after that gets replaced in any case. Meanwhile, I've decluttered, hung shelves, ridded myself of a bug infestation, organized the tupperware, cleaned out the closet, learned how to use a carpet shampooer, and more.
Thank you all for a) participating or b) tolerating my antics or at least c) quietly blacklisting the tag during NaClYoHo; this was the fifth year of the event, and we had definitely our largest turnout of participants yet. I hope you all feel great about the work you've put in and the accomplishments you made!
Remember: if you can't do a great thing, do a something.
Keep the Salty Pirate in your heart year round, and I'll see you next year for Salty Pirates 6: The Winter Scrubber.

I'm so happy you're here on tumblr! I really like when authors give us the opportunity to talk with them, to take a peek inside their creative space, so to speak...i do have a very important question about the By your side universe. How the living arrangements between Newton and Anthony are going? because i'm rereading say my name and our canine hero just peed on a very pricey rug... -i love this version of Kate and Anthony very much, by the way! -
Hahaha thank you, and an excellent question. Asking the important stuff. Enjoy this glimpse into their domesticity:
Nobody loves a pet quite as much as a man who claims he doesn’t like animals.
Daphne had joked that to her once, after Simon fell in love with a tiny orange kitten they found wandering in their backyard. But Kate thought she had been right, watching the scene unfolding before her.
Specifically, Anthony sprawled out on his sectional, flat on his back with his arm arranged haphazardly across the cushions. Newton had backed up to him, his fluffy bum pressed into the crook of Anthony’s neck and shoulder.
Kate couldn’t blame him. She was pretty partial to curling up in that spot as well.
She took her phone out of her pocket and snapped an incriminating photo, trying to be stealthy, but Anthony heard her soft snicker and blinked awake, looking confused by the mass of fur in his peripheral vision.
“Your beast fell asleep on me,” he said groggily, rubbing a hand over his face.
Newton made a little noise of protest as the movement disturbed his nap, digging his face into the pillow.
“I’m very happy you’re friends,” Kate quipped, swinging her leg over Anthony’s prone form so she could straddle his lap. “I was worried about that.”
“Were you?”
“Yes. It was my biggest concern about dating you, actually.”
Anthony cracked a sleepy grin. It was nice, to be able to joke about it now that the truth was out in the open and Edwina was most of the way toward accepting it.
“In that case,” he murmured, dropping his large hands to her hips. “Newton and I are best friends. I was thinking we should take a boy’s trip, actually.”
Kate giggled, looking down at his heavy-lidded eyes, then to where Newton had shifted position and fallen back to sleep, still tucked against Anthony’s side.
Her heart felt full at the perfect tableau. When Newton made his first mess on the rug and Anthony bought a professional-grade carpet shampooer in response, Kate couldn’t have imagined that they would come this far.
But she thought Anthony was secretly fond of Newton. Because he had a big heart. And because he loved her enough to love him, too.
That knowledge made her next words come easily. “Newton really likes living here.”
Her boyfriend cracked one eye open. “Newton does, hm?”
“Yeah. It feels like home to him,” Kate said, running her hands over his. “And I think he’d like to stay. Permanently.”
She was already living there in everything but name, and Anthony had seemed content to let her take over his flat piece by piece. Newton’s leads hanging on the hooks by the door, food dishes in the kitchen, toys strewn over the floor. Kate’s clothes in his dresser and her books on the bedside table. A hundred tiny pieces of her, mixed with all the pieces of him. The very beginning of a shared life.
And now she wanted to put a name to it.
Anthony gazed up at her, looking a little starstruck as she brushed his floppy hair off his forehead. “It’s already his house,” he answered earnestly. “And yours.”
“Okay,” Kate said, all she really needed to say before she leaned down to kiss him, Newton snuggled happily between them.

My city has a biennial "Curbside Cleanup" event in April. People can set out large items for a special trash collection. We put things out starting on a Thursday. They are collected by trash haulers on Saturday.
In the days leading up to the collection people ("scavengers" we call them) drive slowly through the neighborhoods looking for scap metal or items that are perfectly usable. It's kind of fun to watch the procession of beat up pickup trucks, U-haul trailers, and small cars with stuff tied to the roof.
Sheila and I sometimes host a watch party in the driveway. This year her brother grilled his Billy Burgers (amazing smash burgers) for all of us while we drank beer and waived at the drivers.
This year I got rid of an office chair, a couch, an ottoman, a usable vacuum cleaner (I left a sign on it stating that it worked), and a broken carpet shampooer. All but the couch were taken by people before the city came by on Saturday.
One year I put out a different couch and ended up helping a guy load it into his van. He didn't look poor. I asked what he was going to do with the couch. Perhaps it would go in the basement for the kids to use while gaming and eating chips?
"I own some rental properties. I like finding usable furniture to put in them." I got rid of something I'd replaced with a new couch, he got a couch for free. Nice how that works out because the couch didn't (yet) make it to the landfill.
Something inevitably seen on every block are office chairs set of for collection. Two years ago I put one out at the curb. Two years before that was another one. This year my current chair's "leather" was cracked. The latch or gear that can be set to not allow rocking or reclining sometimes worked. More than once I'd lean back and exclaim "oh shit" as I fell backwards. My neck and shoulders were starting to hurt when I worked.
That's no way to live.
This afternoon I went to a business that sells professional office furniture. The showroom is open to the public. A guy asked me some questions about how I sit, where I keep my keyboard, and so on.
He showed me two not inexpensive chairs. I loved the first one I sat in. I did try the other one. Then he said I could look around the used furniture showroom. I saw some decent, heavy-duty chairs there, but that first one I sat in, the new one, was perfect for me so that's what I bought. It will pay for itself because I won't be buying Target/Costco/Staples office chairs every other year.
My desk right now is from Ikea. It's held up okay, maybe 6/10 in how much I like it. New desks at today's store were very sturdy and high quality.
And expensive.
But I saw some used desks that had a few dings or scratches that cost lest than my Ikea desk. They looked like they'd last a lifetime. I wish I'd shopped here earlier.

I feel like 50% of my life is spent on jobs that didn't need to be that complicated, but for some reason were. 😡 Feels like the chores are Hydra monsters. You think it's just shampooing your carpet, but, noooo, then it becomes a string of fixes. "Heck, I'm out of shampooer fluid, I have to go buy some." Then, "Gosh dangit, this store is out" then, "You've got to be kidding me, I forgot my wallet???" To then finally getting it, going home and finding out your shampooer isn't working for some reason.

Harper has made spaghetti for everyone! 🍝
They sit at the table with Zander and enjoy their meal, while the knights are put in the sitting room with their own bowls.
Surely they won't be too messy, right?
This was Ceru's first time having a meal out of her chair in the house. She tried to be tidy, but eating with swords for hands is difficult to say the least. She looked up from her bowl and caught sight of how Notch was eating. He sure did enjoy eating! And seemed to be having fun too!
So she copied him...
Arma on the other hand had waited patiently before starting. But despite having hands, he struggled to keep clean while eating. Such is the problem of a delicious bowl of spaghetti.
Zander had gotten up to check on the knights and to see of they wanted seconds or fifths. Peering through the doorway he broke into a fit of laughter.
"Hey Harper! I think we're gonna have to run the bath again. And get the carpet shampooer too".
"And it seems Ceru has learned Notch's table manners".

How to Keep Baseboards Dust Free
Tumblr media
5 Tips to Clean a Baseboard in Home
If your baseboards have been covered in dust, dirt or grime, employ these five methods to wash them. Utilizing a moist sponge dish soap, vinegar or wood cleaner you can efficiently clean your baseboards , without damaging the wood.
Start working from the top and making sure to focus upon the uppermost part of the bases. Repeat this process for each baseboard, and let the cleaner air dry.more tips
Utilizing the Broom to dust baseboard
Cleaning with a broom baseboard can be a challenge, particularly when it involves climbing up and down to reach the corners. However, you don't have to abandon your cleaning of the baseboards simply because it's lazy.
It is possible to transform the broom from your kitchen into an apron duster for your baseboard. Simply lay a rag of microfiber over bristles, then secure an enormous rubber band around the handle.
Wrap the rag around the bristles before placing it around a third of the way on the base. Tuck into any corners that are loose. Swiffer Duster Sale
With an swab of cotton to dust baseboard
Before using a cotton swab or cotton swab to clean the baseboard, it is necessary to get rid of dust or dirt that has accumulated.
For this, you need to use one gallon of water that is warm and scented with dish soap and make use of a microfiber cloth, or sponge that has been dipped in the solution.
It is also possible to use a magic eraser like Mr. Clean, but you must be cautious not to scrub too hard. For cleaning areas that are difficult to reach make use of the cotton swab that has been soaked in a cleaning solution.
Use the dryer sheet to dust baseboard
There are many methods to clean the baseboard at home. One of these is to use dryer sheets. Although dryer sheets aren't the same like bleach or a chemical cleaner, they are able to clean various surfaces.
A single sheet of paper can be used to scrub the baseboard. It can also keep your clothes soft and free of static. Apart from cleaning the baseboard dryer sheets can also be an excellent option to clean small furniture.
Additionally, you can use sheets for other tasks such as cleaning windows, or smaller electronic equipment. They also create a shiny appearance.
Utilizing a carpet cleaner to dust baseboard
The use of a carpet shampooer is an efficient method of removing staining, particularly on the baseboards. This device is ideal for baseboards that are typically covered with dirt and dirt.
Before you use a carpet shampooer for your floorboards be sure that you test the cleaner on a tiny area first. This will let you try the product on an area that is not intrusive before cleaning the entire surface.

Utilizing socks to dust baseboard
If you're looking for some tips for cleaning, consider employing an old, tattered sock to clean off your baseboards. Spray the sock with a cleaning agent and slide it along the baseboards, then wash it well.
Repeat this process until you are finished as needed, and you'll have your bases clean within a matter of minutes. Be sure to squeeze out any excess water to ensure that the baseboard does not get excessively damp.
We hope these tips provide you with ideas for cleaning your baseboards. If you are in need of the cleaning supplies go to our link to find specific items to clean your baseboards.

A totally normal thing to be annoyed by (sarcasm):
Insta video person:  It’s hard to believe we don’t wear shoes in the house and this carpet (it’s a rug) is THIS dirty!!! It’s only three months old! I shampoo my carpets every three months and...
*shows a picture of Tide powder and Borax powder with a carpet shampooer and two dogs*
😑
Ok, well using laundry soap on your floor is your first mistake. You’re not going to be able to get that rinsed out properly with the machine because it’s a hyper-concentrated soap that’s meant to be used with many gallons of water in a different machine that will also use many more gallons of water and vigorous agitation to rinse it away whereas a carpet shampooer will use a few gallons (or maybe even just one) of water for wash and also for rinse and carpet shampooer soap is designed to be used in that way, soap residue is sticky, and it’s going to gather dirt faster.
And then doing that every three months????? Those rugs probably feel like tack cloth at this point.
Also, you have dogs who’s feet are their shoes.

Any tips for dealing with cat pee smell? No matter how much I clean and where I search my room still smells like cat pee and I don’t know what to do short of burning my room to the ground.
well, i don't recommend a flamethrower because then your room is gonna smell like hot cat pee (which is not an improvement) and burning cat hair (definitely not an improvement).
for carpeted surfaces or clothes, i generally use nature's miracle. it's a really good product. if the smell is STILL there, it's worth renting a carpet shampooer to really get down there. If the carpet pad underneath is soaked with pee, you might have to tear up the carpet and replace it entirely.
my workplace is pretty much entirely hard, non-porous floors and I think that really helps--- the only area that's carpeted is the stairs and that's so senior cats can easily climb them. i don't think i do anything particularly special to keep the floors from smelling. Usually just mop them and then disinfect them with either bleach, accel, or with the steamer. I must be doing something right at work because visitors often comment on the lack of cat smell.

Happy first day of National Clean Your Home Month! (National Novel Writing Month novelists, happy first day to you as well!)
[ID: Five images; top left, potatoes and chickpeas in golden brown sauce on a round of flatbread. Top right, Dearborn the Tortie is lying on a blanket in my lap, propped up by my legs, looking like a boomerang. Bottom images are, left and center, before-and-after of my front hall, first with a raggedy blue carpet and then clean and carpetless, and bottom right is my newly cleaned kitchen floor.]
Started this morning with what looks like a weird deconstructed apple pie but is actually flatbread topped with curried potatoes and chickpeas (lest you think I'm fancy, it's Trader Joe's Malabari Paratha topped with Tasty Bite Bombay Potatoes). Dearborn is unimpressed by cleaning but she is extremely Shaped. Still, after eating I gave her about half an hour of cuddles, then set to work!
I normally clean before showering because you do get grimy, but I noticed last year that my pajamas are not ideal for cleaning in, so I set aside an outfit to change into, which leaves arms and legs mostly bare and doesn't drape much -- yoga leggings tucked up above the calf and a tight tank top. I'm amusedly referring to it as my Slutty Maid outfit.
Anyway, this morning I put on 99% Invisible's "Devolutionary Design", about Devo's first album cover, and set to work. Polk has been destroying the hallway rug, and the kitchen rug was disgusting, so I pulled both up, rolled 'em up, and tossed them, then cleaned the floors. A coating of goo-gone for old carpet tape residue followed by a brief sponge scrub, then a spritz of Grease Lightning cleaner-degreaser and a scrub with the steam mop for both the hall and the kitchen, had them looking at least better.
Cleaning is complicated by the Kitchen Protocol I've had to introduce; the kitchen has a wheat weevil issue, which is pernicious but oddly benign -- after having mice several years ago, all my food is always contained in either a sealed jar/tupperware or its original packaging and they haven't actually ever got into the food, they just live under the kitchen linoleum. In any case, any kitchen cleaning I do in a day has to be the last cleaning I do, and anything coming out of the kitchen first needs to be treated with undilute white vinegar, then rinsed and treated a second time with bleach, to prevent spreading the weevils to other areas of the house. I'm also spraying down all the floors with dilute vinegar frequently.
Anyway, the steam mop is now out of commission until its freshly bleached fabric pad dries, but it did take me exactly the length of the podcast to set up, clean, and clear away the cleaning supplies/wash the sponge afterward, so I'm pleased with the day's work.
Disposable nitrile gloves used count: 1.
Tomorrow's tasks: vacuum all over, then figure out the carpet shampooer I was given, and if I manage that, shampoo the rugs.

I am a spoilsport who tracks items purchased from my wishlists. This is why:
Fiance asked what I wanted for Christmas. Idk, I keep giving him answers like "Nintendo switch" or "carpet shampooer" or "stand mixer" or "new desk"
He has gotten me.....a new PC. Mind you I suspect it's bc this PC will play games and I'm never sure if my laptop will, but um. He's also not ordered, afaik, a monitor to go with it.
This way I can plan that desk purchase as such appropriately
