Do you like story endings that are open to interpretation or do you prefer stories with endings that wrap everything up conclusively? It depends on the genre for me. Most genres I prefer a conclusive ending but when it comes to psychological thrillers - I almost always prefer a creepy ending that is open to interpretation. Please Join Us is a dark and creepy psychological thriller with an ending that is somewhat open to interpretation. It’s also very shocking and I loved it. I received an advanced reader copy of I’ll Never Tell from Lake Union Publishing via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. I’ll Never Tell by Catherine McKenzie is a story about revealing family secrets. The MacAllister family has owned and operated a summer camp in Canada for decades. Twenty years ago, a camp counselor, Amanda, was found bludgeoned- no one was ever charged with this crime. After their parents die, the MacAllister siblings – Ryan, Margaux, Mary, Kate and Liddie- return to Camp Macaw for the reading of their father’s will. There’s a stipulation in his will that requires the five MacAllister siblings and Sean, the camp groundskeeper, to solve the attack on Amanda. All six of them are at turning points in their lives though none of them are particularly close with one another. They all have secrets and their own ideas about who is responsible for this crime. I devoured this book – it was a fast, easy read- perfect for a rainy afternoon on the couch. I’ll Never Tells is available today, June 1, 2019. Catherine McKenzie's I'll Never Tell made me think of Death on the Orient Express. Five adult siblings gather at the family-owned and operated camp on Labor Day for a Memorial Service and reading of the parents will. They are shocked to find out that their father believes that his only son, Ryan was responsible for an accident 20 years earlier. Even though the police cleared Ryan their father still believes he is guilty. Their father asks the remaining siblings to vote as to his innocence or guilt. This vote will determine the outcome of the will. I'll Never Tell was very suspenseful, had lots of secrets, and was one of those books that kept you guessing to the very end. I would highly recommend it.

Quem é o grande mentiroso?

Catherine McKenzie nos conta a história de três mulheres que eram próximas às vítimas de uma explosão ocasionada por um vazamento de gás em um edifício em Chicago: Cecily, Kate e Franny. O incidente, que ficou conhecido como Triple Ten, fez 513 vítimas fatais e deixou mais de 2000 feridos. A trama começa quando no ano seguinte a Initiative, uma organização com o intuito de dar suporte às famílias que comprovadamente possuíam um ente querido no fatídico incidente, encarrega Teo Jackson, um documentarista que estava tirando fotos de alguns mendigos próximo ao local do desastre, de fazer um documentário com as famílias das vítimas. Durante as entrevistas mentiras são contadas e verdades são encobertas, o que nos deixa a pergunta: “Quem é o grande mentiroso?”

A história de Cecily nos é contada em primeira pessoa. A personagem perdeu o marido e a melhor amiga no Triple Ten. Através dela descobrimos os principais detalhes do acidente e o quanto isso afetou não só a sua família, como também a de várias outras pessoas. Cecily, por um golpe de sorte ou propositalmente, naquela manhã acabou se atrasando para o encontro que tinha marcado com seu marido Tom Grayson, com quem teve seus 2 filhos. Tom era o cofundador da empresa de software sediada no prédio do incidente. No momento da explosão ela tem seu primeiro contato com Teo Jackson, quando este tira a fotografia que a tornou o cartaz do Triple Ten. Com a tarefa de criar seus filhos, Cassie de 15 anos e Henry de 13, nossa heroína se vê enfrentando momentos na educação dos filhos nos quais sempre imaginou ter Tom ao seu lado para dar suporte. Tendo que se adaptar a essa nova realidade, ainda tem que lidar com os efeitos da “popularidade” gerada pela fotografia tirada por Teo.

Trabalhando como babá dos gêmeos Willie e Steven de três anos em Montreal, Kate é uma das personagens que achei mais misteriosa. Narrada em terceira pessoa, sua história muitas vezes se torna um tanto confusa e então você se dá por conta de que na verdade é uma nova revelação que está sendo tecida. Kate é a personificação da pessoa cheia de erros que quer recomeçar a vida, mesmo que a maneira para que isso ocorra não seja a certa. Por ser tão misteriosa, não dá pra falar muito sobre a personagem sem acabar estragando alguma grande descoberta sobre a história. Digo alguma porque a história de Kate tem várias coisas a nos dizer, quando achamos que tudo já nos foi relatado, mais uma surpresa nos é contada.

A maior parte da história de Franny nos é contada através das entrevistas que ela dá para Teo durante a produção do documentário. Franny também possui seus segredos, mas não acho que sejam tantos quanto os de Kate. Durante as entrevistas descobrimos sua origem e também como sua vida está ligada ao Triple Ten. Um dos principais fatos sobre Franny é que ela tomou frente da Initiative, sendo ela uma das principais pessoas a ajudar as famílias das vítimas a receberem sua indenização.

No geral foi uma boa leitura, caso haja oportunidade, estarei lendo mais livros da autora. A medida que você vai lendo, teorias são montadas na sua cabeça, desconfianças com relação a vários personagens, até descobrir o grande mentiroso. Alguns momentos achei meio massante o fato da autora voltar em momentos já contados da história para adicionar mais informações, no demais foi uma leitura muito agradável e também muito viciante.
