coming in with another le Carré related ask: do you have any recommendations of fiction authors who also write about the moral darkness/complexities of the cold war (or mayhaps the drug war), but preferably with more women involved? I asked my local librarian for a recommendation along those lines and all the stuff I got was either cold war but primarily focused on men (graham greene's quiet america), women but it's wwii and they're presented as straightforward hero narratives, or like...stuff about women and nuclear science which is just not what I'm about right now. for context, I'm kinda trying to inhale vibes for fanfic reasons (although the fanfic is not of a le Carré book). if any recs spring to mind, I would love them! if not no worries <333

The sun hung lazily in the cerulean sky, casting a warm and benevolent glow over the vibrant park where Rhodes had orchestrated a rendezvous with Cesco for an afternoon playdate with their respective four and five-year-old daughters. The euphoric cadence of children's laughter reverberated through the air, an audible testament to the joyous atmosphere that enveloped the playground. Goldie, clutching Rhodes' hand with effervescent anticipation, led the way, her tiny steps resonating with enthusiasm.

Dot, accompanied by her father Cesco, warmly welcomed them with a genial smile, initiating a convivial exchange of pleasantries between the two sets of parents. The playground was a myriad of hues embellishing the structures of swings, slides, and merry-go-rounds. ONYX CURLS BREEZE PAST SQUINTED EYES IN A RUSH OF wind, pellets of rain punishing anyone who attempts to seek a good time at this hour. dot is unfurling little fingers from a callous hand, clutching the ball of orange that mews within the confines of her shirt, sole eye peeking out to watch what's happening ahead. pink lips are turned upward at their corners, amusement already plaguing a dampened face at the thought of such a tiny thing creating havoc in the older man's apartment — with his own glassware breaking far more than he'd been able to keep record of. curtains torn in a vintage shred should anyone be curious enough to ask about the sudden change in decor. he's well aware of the consequences that may be faced, though big dewy eyes that had pleaded to keep the poor creature had influenced the decision faster than he could say no. she'd named him pirate, a small chuckle leaving him as its fate is sealed for a lifetime of existence. a pet. their second. yet their first without immediate co-ownership. darla had been their first, on far colder nights than expected, burly grey paws slinking between the two men that snored away a most exterting night. the best sleep they'd gotten in weeks, limbs tangled & refusing to unravel despite the heat that threatened to smother both. droplets slope down black strands until they're dropping at the tips of his lashes, drawing away the image as tiny knuckles rap at the door. a small coo for her father to open up or else ❝ his toes will froze ! ❞

there is comfort in the silence . something that soothes him in cradled arms through the shuffling of dry linen and mumbled curses from the other . his hands were never meant for something as delicate as carefully folding silk between his scarred fingers , so he can't help the exhale that escapes his nose when his haphazard folds collapse into nothing . eyes pointed at the ground , he slowly pushes the silk pile over to cesco , who picks it up and whips it free of both wrinkles and akma’s flawed touch . he tries again to fold fabric into the tightly packed square as the other man does . “ can you show me again ? “ internally , he grimaces at how timid the request sounds coming from lips chapped by the kiss of his own teeth and his chest tightens at what he interprets as cesco’s aggravated and sharp inhale . the underboss pulls a shirt into a tight fold quicker than the devil can follow with gold plated eyes . sleeve meets stitch and it’s wrapped into perfection . it sits in front of him like a gift , wrapped as an offering — what talent .

he can feel his hands shake with the threat of frustration . “ . . . one of our soldiers has been reported missing . “ it comes out as a distant whisper ; an attempt to distract . “ disappearances aren’t unheard of this time of the year . “ valentine’s day . it surely wasn’t the first time someone had defected to follow their heart — whatever the hell that means to someone not like him . he purses his lips as he fails another fold , sucking his teeth as he slides the garment to the other again ; the balled up cloth mocking his failure . “ i can go find them , bring them back in one piece to answer to you . “ it was something he was good at : hunting and dragging them back to cesco’s feet , not much like a dog , but more like a hellhound of shadow , obsidian and bone . something he could do flawlessly with hands decorated in scars for little more in return than the kraken's lips breathing life into the furnace of his chest . void of heart , but full of a flame that @godlessrot could cup his hands around for the same warmth — smiling at the way akma's hungry flames licked at his fingers ; he could only foolishly hope for such a sight . he just figured he be better at something that he was bred for than something — “ like this . “ he tears his eyes off of the floor when he realizes he’s digging claws into the sweater in his hands . “ i could do that , better . . . than this . “

He's never pushy, he'll just lightly encourage or discourage things but ultimately, he will treat you like an equal to him, no matter what. He's also the type to do very romantic surprises for anniversaries.
