Mysterious Lotus Case Book
Year : 2023 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 40
My rate: 7/10
Synopsis :
Ten years ago, Li Xiang Yi, the master of the Sigu Sect, dominated with his superior swordsmanship and was a symbol of light in the martial arts world. However, he suddenly disappeared along with Di Fei Sheng, the leader of the Jinyuan Alliance, after they arranged to battle in the East Sea.
Ten years later, Li Lian Hua is a countryside doctor who travels dragging around a lotus tower. He accidentally becomes "famous" and gets pulled into the pugilistic world that he no longer wants to have any connections with. Fang Duo Bing, a passionate youth who dreams of becoming a hero, realizes that Li Lian Hua is not a simple man and vows to find proof that Li Lian Hua has been impersonating a famous doctor. Meanwhile, Di Fei Sheng, who has always regarded Li Xiang Yi as a fierce enemy, has also reemerged in the pugilistic world and recognizes that the unremarkable doctor Li Lian Hua is none other than Li Xiang Yi.
After a series of cases, Li Lian Hua, Di Fei Sheng and Fang Duo Bing gradually come to forge a deep friendship and join hands in solving mysterious cases to uphold justice.
Main cast :
Cheng Yi as Li Lianhua (voiced by Cheng Yi) / Li Xiangyi
Xu Wei Luo as Li Xiangyi (teen)
Xie Zi Mo (谢子墨) as Li Xiangyi (child)
Zeng Shun Xi as Fang Duobing (Fang Xiaobao)
Lu Jin Hao as Fang Xiaobao (young)
Xiao Shun Yao as Di Feisheng
Xu Jia Xi as Di Feisheng (young)
My thoughts on this drama :
From the reviews I had read online, this was supposed to be as good at The Blood of Youth. For me, it was not. Don't get me wrong! It is a very good drama. The overall absence of romance is a big plus (it's there in the background but has no direct impact on the story itself more than in a few flashbacks that I enjoyed skipping).
What bothered me most is that the second hero was such a dimwit. All muscle no brain. Yes he's pretty young and all, but that wannabe detective was just dumb. He relied completely on Lianhua's deduction before finding the solution to all cases (but still taking all credit for solving it heh...). It took a bit too long for the big reveal of the main lead's identity, and I found truly ridiculous that his old pals did not recognize him as soon as they saw him. He was pretty much walking out there looking the same as ten year prior, sometimes wearing a mask that hid nothing.... but that's a common trope in Cdramaland so.... Big thumb up to the redemption arc of the initial "villain". The friendship born of it was amazing to see, and I was very much rooting for more interactions between the three main characters. The side characters also did their job, adding drama and comic relief to the story. The backstory that unraveled slowly up to the finale was splendidly executed, and I felt terrible for Lianhua when he realized the whole truth. I have a small regret though: for a Wuxia drama, there weren't that many awesome fights, and the rare ones were so short they lacked impact.
Anyway, it  is still a good drama, Cheng Yi prove once again that he's a true talent of this generation, and I hope to see him take one more dramas and movies (no dumb romcom) to showcase his impressive capacity to show emotions with his eyes and micro expressions. He convinced me back in Immortal Samsara, now I'm just another fan...

Mysterious Lotus Casebook (莲花楼): my review and thoughts
preface: I should start out by saying I probably should be doing my math lecture right about now, and i don’t usually give reviews on dramas i watched, but i really love this drama too much 😭 and because i know im the “三分钟热度的人” or really flighty in my interests, i guess i need to memorialise this because i’ll probably forget how much i loved this show 😭 and also. procrastinate. yes.
The plot starts with Li Cheng Yi and Di Fei Sheng fighting above a river. Although it seemed like a normal fight in the jianghu, it was essentially a fight between 2 famous and very powerful people to become the first in the jianghu. This fight was not without its consequences, as it brought forth a wrath to the whole of the jianghu, where torn bodies and scattered remains were littered throughout. It wasn’t just a fight between the two, but also a fight between factions, a clashing of ideals, where Li Cheng Yi was the “good” or the side on justice while Di Fei Sheng was seen as evil.
10 years later, Li Cheng Yi (renamed as Li Lian Hua) meets a young man, Fang Duo Bing, who ropes him into solving 10 mysterious cases in the jianghu. He starts to uncover secrets about his past, but at the same time, Li Luan Hua suffers from the pain of the poison years ago, and his imminent death is fast approaching.

I LOVE THIS GUYS ACTING SO MUCH PLEASE ITS SO FILLED WITH CHARISMA
anyways, 成毅 plays both li cheng yi and li lian hua. he plays them so well, so so so so so well, and although he’s not particularly handsome, he brings out the essence of each of the character he plays. li cheng yi is an incredibly talented youth, who’s success caused him to be arrogant, yet he also displays the splendour and recklessness of his youth. There was a saying in the show “李成夷就是最耀眼的光” and it was true, he was so bright and talented and hopeful. In contrast, li lian hua, although wise and cunning, is someone who is humble, someone who lived a modest and impoverished life. he is someone who was tortured by the sins he judged to be “his”, but he is also the kindest man alive. you can feel the regret and weariness reeking off him in spades, that sort of wise but tired aura of a man that lived a thousand lives. i cannot put into words how much the contrast between the two people made me really upset, in the way it’s so melachonic how li cheng yi became li lian hua, and thus wasted away any ounce of talent or potential he had. it was sad in the way you see a bright star fall, a “once-had”, or “could have been”.
okay im going back to my math lecture maybe ill finish this later

End of Year Creator Tag 2020
RULES: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 favourite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works <3
I was tagged by the lovely and talented @midnightseance! Thank you so much 💛
(Low-key cheating because I only published 5 works in 2020 but, you know, here’s to hoping I’ll get more writing done in 2021 😂 )
1. The Cavern and the Koi Pond: (19k, Avatar: The Last Airbender) Zuko gets yanked into the Spirit World with Zhao and goes on a journey of self-discovery in order to escape. Roku and Yue watch with popcorn  and provide commentary, while reflecting. So, this was not only my first ATLA fic, but the first multi-chapter story I’ve published since, like 2013. It was so fun to write a kind of folktale-esque story with the least likely folktale protagonist, Fang Mango providing emotional support, and pretty much everything involving Roku and Yue’s dynamic (underrated duo). Also, the amount of people who found the math-obsessed River Spirit amusing was incredibly validating because I spent the whole drafting process going “please let this not be only funny to me.”
2. The White Lotus Gambit: (21k, Avatar: The Last Airbender) Following the death of his father, Prince Lu Ten is sent to track down the Avatar to prove he is ready to take the throne. It provides an excellent cover story for his work as a spy for the White Lotus, right up until the Avatar appears for the first time in 100 years. Longest story I’ve published to date! In terms of scope and scale it was a pretty huge diversion from anything I’d written previously. But even still, I was really happy with the relationships and emotional moments I was able to develop, particularly between Lu Ten and Sokka and Lu Ten and Zuko.
3. Kit-Kats: (1k, Stranger Things) Waiting for Will to wake up, Dustin reflects on his friend group and candy that splits evenly into four pieces. This is kind of cheating because I wrote this in 2019 after s3 came out, but I revised and published it in 2020, so I’m counting it. Dustin as a character is just absolutely delightful to write. I loved being in his head, and getting to explore the somewhat fumbling, but genuine, beginnings of his friendship with Steve.
4. Soft and Messy Things: (2k, The Umbrella Academy) Following the world’s worst family reunion, Diego and Klaus discuss the terrifying prospect of losing control. I wrote this as a gift for my sister after we binged s2 in, like 3 days, thinking it would be the only TUA fic I ever wrote (oh my sweet summer child). Diego and Klaus’ relationship is one of my favorites in the show, and getting to explore it was such a great time (even if, you know, they weren’t having a great time). I also really loved writing the excepts from Vanya’s book.
5. It’s So Dark Outside Tonight: (4k, The Umbrella Academy) When Ben dies (for the first time) Klaus finds himself struggling to sleep. Thin walls mean Diego is as well (sometimes, it’s easier to say you’re taking care of someone else). One of my favorite things to write (and read) in TUA fics is the massive discrepancy in the ways people perceive the academy, from the marketable kid heroes phenomenon, to Vanya’s understandable but misguided jealousy, to former fans after the fact going “hey...wait a minute,” and getting to explore that here was amazing. These kids and their complicated emotions and inability to communicate.
