Wordplay in Xie Wanqing's fate poem
One of the things that confused me most in Love Between Fairy and Devil is why our protagonists insist that Xiao Run has to be the destined lover and murderer of Xie Wanqing, when the English subtitles only say she has to die at the hands of her "beloved," which could be Dongfang Qingcang, right??? Easy! Why do they lose all hope when Xiao Run doesn't follow their plans?
The TL;DR is that there's a bit of ambiguity in Xie Wanqing's fate poem, and xiao-Lanhua and co. interpreted it a little too literally, while the Netflix subs gave us the more abstract meaning.
Here is the crucial line, according to Netflix subs:
Then she meets her beloved who understands her well
In Chinese, it is
偏逢萧郎解语人 pian feng xiao lang jieyu ren
In particular, the two characters 萧郎 or Xiao-lang, superficially mean "a man whose surname is Xiao," the same Xiao character as in Xiao Run. This line could conceivably mean, "Then she meets Mr. Xiao, who understands her well," which is how xiao-Lanhua and friends interpreted it.
However, if you search for Xie Wanqing's fate poem on the web, you'll find lots of posts in Chinese explaining that 萧郎/Xiao-lang is actually a poetic way to indicate a woman's beloved. It has origins in multiple historical figures surnamed Xiao, but the definitive usage is in a poem by Tang-dynasty poet Cui Jiao, in which he laments that his lover, a maid, was purchased by another man, and alludes to himself as Xiao-lang [See https://www.gushiwen.cn/mingju_576.aspx]. Hence "Xiao-lang" became a way to refer to the person a woman loves. And as we see later in the show, the Netflix subs are actually right in interpreting "Xiao-lang" as "beloved," and not an actual person named Xiao.
To draw an English parallel, I think it's a bit as if the poem had mentioned a person named Romeo, and there just happened to be a guy named Romeo in the vicinity. I, as a viewer with a modicum of English literary education, know that "Romeo" can be a general epithet for a loverboy, but a thousands-years-old immortal with no connections to the human world might not.
That's not the end of the wordplay in the fate poem, though it is the most important. Here are some small things I found on the rest of the lines:
半世锦绣半世尘 ban shi jinxiu ban shi chen Mine: Half a lifetime of splendor, half of dust Netflix: Half a lifetime of glory, half a lifetime of dust Notes: The word 风尘, meaning prostitution, literally breaks down into "wind-dust," and the 尘 (dust) in the poem probably alludes to this, according to https://www.douban.com/group/topic/273507772/?_i=8820568QDrpMtA.
一舞惊鸿倾鹿城 yi wu jinghong qing lucheng Mine: The elegance of a beautiful dance overwhelms Lucheng Netflix: A magnificent dance stunned the whole Lucheng
韶华等闲随烟柳 shaohua dengxian sui yanliu Mine: A beautiful spring thoughtlessly follows the budding willows Netflix: Her beauty is just like the willow's Notes: https://www.douban.com/group/topic/273507772/?_i=8817957xu4lIgj suggests that this means Xie Wanqing is unhappy with her life and fate despite her status as Lucheng's number-one courtesan. https://edu.iask.sina.com.cn/bdjx/6fnw1wJF5xw.html explains that 烟柳 yanliu refers to the time when willow trees are covered in tender budding leaves that are not yet green, giving them the appearance of being shrouded in smoke.
凭栏元夜闻笛声 pinglan yuanye wen di sheng Mine: Leaning on the railing, she hears a flute on the night of the Lantern Festival Netflix: She hears the flute on the night of the Lantern Festival
断肠几欲飞仙去 duanchang jiyu fei xian qu Mine: Grief-stricken, she almost flies to the heavens Netflix: She is heartbroken and wants to end her life Notes: 仙去 is a poetic or figurative way to say someone dies, but also literally means "goes to the fairy realm," a nod to Xie Wanqing's real identity as the fairy God of War.
偏逢萧郎解语人 pian feng xiao lang jieyu ren Mine: Unexpectedly, she meets a man surnamed Xiao who understands her Netflix: Then she meets her beloved who understands her well Notes: Discussed above.
缘定花朝丝萝梦 yuan ding huazhao siluo meng Mine: Fate ordains a dream of marriage on the second month's fifteenth day Netflix: They are destined to be together
红烛剑影断芳魂 hong zhu jian ying duan fanghun Mine: The shadow of the sword in the light of the celebratory red candle cuts the young woman's soul short. Netflix: Her husband kills her on the wedding night Notes: https://www.douban.com/group/topic/273293366/?_i=8819367xu4lIgj agrees with me that this does not necessarily mean the groom will be the killer.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

Mysterious Lotus Case Book
Year : 2023 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 40
My rate: 7/10
Synopsis :
Ten years ago, Li Xiang Yi, the master of the Sigu Sect, dominated with his superior swordsmanship and was a symbol of light in the martial arts world. However, he suddenly disappeared along with Di Fei Sheng, the leader of the Jinyuan Alliance, after they arranged to battle in the East Sea.
Ten years later, Li Lian Hua is a countryside doctor who travels dragging around a lotus tower. He accidentally becomes "famous" and gets pulled into the pugilistic world that he no longer wants to have any connections with. Fang Duo Bing, a passionate youth who dreams of becoming a hero, realizes that Li Lian Hua is not a simple man and vows to find proof that Li Lian Hua has been impersonating a famous doctor. Meanwhile, Di Fei Sheng, who has always regarded Li Xiang Yi as a fierce enemy, has also reemerged in the pugilistic world and recognizes that the unremarkable doctor Li Lian Hua is none other than Li Xiang Yi.
After a series of cases, Li Lian Hua, Di Fei Sheng and Fang Duo Bing gradually come to forge a deep friendship and join hands in solving mysterious cases to uphold justice.
Main cast :
Cheng Yi as Li Lianhua (voiced by Cheng Yi) / Li Xiangyi
Xu Wei Luo as Li Xiangyi (teen)
Xie Zi Mo (谢子墨) as Li Xiangyi (child)
Zeng Shun Xi as Fang Duobing (Fang Xiaobao)
Lu Jin Hao as Fang Xiaobao (young)
Xiao Shun Yao as Di Feisheng
Xu Jia Xi as Di Feisheng (young)
My thoughts on this drama :
From the reviews I had read online, this was supposed to be as good at The Blood of Youth. For me, it was not. Don't get me wrong! It is a very good drama. The overall absence of romance is a big plus (it's there in the background but has no direct impact on the story itself more than in a few flashbacks that I enjoyed skipping).
What bothered me most is that the second hero was such a dimwit. All muscle no brain. Yes he's pretty young and all, but that wannabe detective was just dumb. He relied completely on Lianhua's deduction before finding the solution to all cases (but still taking all credit for solving it heh...). It took a bit too long for the big reveal of the main lead's identity, and I found truly ridiculous that his old pals did not recognize him as soon as they saw him. He was pretty much walking out there looking the same as ten year prior, sometimes wearing a mask that hid nothing.... but that's a common trope in Cdramaland so.... Big thumb up to the redemption arc of the initial "villain". The friendship born of it was amazing to see, and I was very much rooting for more interactions between the three main characters. The side characters also did their job, adding drama and comic relief to the story. The backstory that unraveled slowly up to the finale was splendidly executed, and I felt terrible for Lianhua when he realized the whole truth. I have a small regret though: for a Wuxia drama, there weren't that many awesome fights, and the rare ones were so short they lacked impact.
Anyway, it  is still a good drama, Cheng Yi prove once again that he's a true talent of this generation, and I hope to see him take one more dramas and movies (no dumb romcom) to showcase his impressive capacity to show emotions with his eyes and micro expressions. He convinced me back in Immortal Samsara, now I'm just another fan...

Completed 'Surname' Polls
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
This post is for the polls which have finished running and can no longer be voted in (since I have realised that I'm quickly approaching the limit for hyperlinks in the original masterlist).
If you want to see the currently live polls, they can be found here
Finished polls: Cao/Wei/Guo/Chen/Ye/Qiao/Yu/Xue/Tang/Jiang/Su/Gao/Mei/Lin/Wu/Sun/Liu/Di/Zhang/Ying/Mo/Li/Song/Yan/Xiao/Pei/Hua/Xie/Mu/Qi/Shen/Lan/Fang/Luo /Huo/Xu/Wang/Ming/Fan/Yuan/Feng/Bai/Jin/Meng/Yun/Zhao/Wen/Zhou/Yang/Shang/Yue/Sheng/Ouyang/Lu/Ling/Hu/Gu/Ding

Posting my Thunderbolt Fantasy playlist here! This is not the whole OST, this is a selection of my 24 favorite pieces (however the whole ost is also awesome! I linked to it here)
Track list below the cut if you’re interested (not spoilery)!
His/Story (season 2 OP, full version)
Lang Wu Yao (Lang Wu-Yao's theme)
show-no-feel (Shang Bu-Huan's theme)
Claymore (I actually don't know what this is. It's a lyric version of Show-No-Feel that's featured on the Crescent Cutlass single. as far as I know, it does not appear in the show.)
Judgement (season 3 OP, full version)
Roll the Dice (season 2 ED, full version)
thunderBOLTfantasy (Thunderbolt Fantasy main theme)
tanh1 (Dan Fei's theme)
GKpeople (the Xuan Gui Zong's theme)
from either way (Shou Yun-Xiao's theme (1st half), Juan Can-Yun's theme (2nd half))
Kguy&kill don't Ikill (Xing Hai's season 1 theme (1st half), Sha Wu-Sheng's theme (2nd half))
Betsu Ten guy (Mie Tian-Hai's theme)
Crescent Cutlass (insert song from Bewitching Melody of the West)
He Zi Ying Luo (Xie Yingluo's theme)
Xiao Kuang Juan (Xiao Kuang-Juan's theme)
Di Kong (Di Kong's theme)
Lu Zhen Jie (Lou Zhen-Jie's theme)
Huo Shi Ming Huang (Huo Shi Ming Huang's theme)
Divine Swarm (the Order of the Divine Swarm's theme)
Wàn Jūn Pò (Wan Jun-Po's theme)
Princess Cháo Fēng (Chao Feng's theme)
Azibělpher (Azibelpher's theme)
Sinister Fortress (the Demon Realm's theme)
Raimei (season 1 OP, full version)
My notes:
The soundtrack is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano. All lyrics are sung by Takanori Nishikawa (also known as T.M. Revolution), a Japanese pop singer and the voice actor for Lang Wu-Yao.
The track names from season 1 are written in the Roman alphabet, so for those I used the styling present on the album. The other track names are translated/Romanized as needed.
Some of these are used as generic BGM but are named after (and primarily used for) a certain character/group, so I've simply listed them as "___'s theme"
Some tracks are variations on each other or the same theme. Such pairs are His/Story & Thunderboltfantasy, Show-No-Feel & Claymore, Gkpeople & Betsu Ten Guy, and Azibelpher & Sinister Fortress :D
Again, this is just a collection of my favorites, not the most used or most iconic tracks (sorry Lin🦆). My top 5 are probably Crescent Cutlass, Show-No-Feel, His/Story, He Zi Ling Yuo, and Lang Wu Yao!

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Eight
Events:
MCS is attacked in the street to test his defences; later, a large group attack his rooms. Jingrui helps fight them off and discovers they were his father's men.
The Minister of Revenue, Lou Zhijing, approaches the CP to confess he is responsible for some of the bodies in the well.
MCS has bought another house, which backs onto Jingyan's.
Shisan-xiansheng visits MCS.
Banruo visits the magistrate to encourage him to hand the whole case over to the Ministry of Justice asap.
Names and titles:
Ministers speaking to the CP use the personal pronoun ‘weichen’.
Minister Lou’s title is shangshu. He’s a second-rank minister.
Xie Yu addresses the CP as just dianxia, not taizu dianxia.
MCS calls Meng Zhi da-shu to Fei Liu.
Jingrui calls Li Gang ‘helmsmaster’ – huh? I checked, that’s the literal translation.
Shisan-xiansheng calls MCS xiao-zhuren (little master) and MCS calls him Shisan-shu.
Costumes and weapons
Everyone's wearing fur now.
Characters
MCS can’t fight, but he’s not as helpless in a swordfight as I would be.
The CP repeatedly calls Minister Lou careless – that’s his sole condemnation.
Xie Yu thinks the Emperor won’t care about the crime if it’s couched in terms of the princes’ conflict. That’s horribly telling.
The secret tunnel was Meng Zhi’s idea! He found the house and planned the tunnel on his own.
Banruo does massage for Prince Yu.
Banruo and Prince Yu are discussing MCS’s motives for his actions so far, and it doesn’t occur to them he might be motivated by justice for the victims in each case.
Xie Yu used his own guards to attack MCS, not just Tianquan. A sign of manpower limitations?
Shisan-xiansheng knew MCS’s mother. He hasn’t seen MCS since he was Lin Shu.
Banruo has 15 wives or concubines of ministers on her string.
Gong Yu has infiltrated Banruo’s operation, so she must be good at spy stuff, but all we see her doing is moon over MCS.
There are a lot of new names in this episode. Lou Zhijing = Minister of Revenue, CP’s party, was involved in the murders at Orchid House. Gao Sheng = Magistrate, in charge of Orchid House case, neutral. Zhang Jin = former owner of Orchid House, deceased. Shi Jun = his housekeeper, sent to magistrate by Prince Yu.
Time
The guy who owned Orchid Court died 4 years ago. The parties where women were killed were 7 or 8 years ago.
Places
Does MCS still own Orchid Court? Did he sell it back? Was it acquired as evidence?
Misc
Government ministers aren’t allowed to visit brothels. Therefore select little unofficial brothels exist to cater to them.

Mysterious Lotus Casebook (莲花楼): my review and thoughts
preface: I should start out by saying I probably should be doing my math lecture right about now, and i don’t usually give reviews on dramas i watched, but i really love this drama too much 😭 and because i know im the “三分钟热度的人” or really flighty in my interests, i guess i need to memorialise this because i’ll probably forget how much i loved this show 😭 and also. procrastinate. yes.
The plot starts with Li Cheng Yi and Di Fei Sheng fighting above a river. Although it seemed like a normal fight in the jianghu, it was essentially a fight between 2 famous and very powerful people to become the first in the jianghu. This fight was not without its consequences, as it brought forth a wrath to the whole of the jianghu, where torn bodies and scattered remains were littered throughout. It wasn’t just a fight between the two, but also a fight between factions, a clashing of ideals, where Li Cheng Yi was the “good” or the side on justice while Di Fei Sheng was seen as evil.
10 years later, Li Cheng Yi (renamed as Li Lian Hua) meets a young man, Fang Duo Bing, who ropes him into solving 10 mysterious cases in the jianghu. He starts to uncover secrets about his past, but at the same time, Li Luan Hua suffers from the pain of the poison years ago, and his imminent death is fast approaching.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE THIS GUYS ACTING SO MUCH PLEASE ITS SO FILLED WITH CHARISMA
anyways, 成毅 plays both li cheng yi and li lian hua. he plays them so well, so so so so so well, and although he’s not particularly handsome, he brings out the essence of each of the character he plays. li cheng yi is an incredibly talented youth, who’s success caused him to be arrogant, yet he also displays the splendour and recklessness of his youth. There was a saying in the show “李成夷就是最耀眼的光” and it was true, he was so bright and talented and hopeful. In contrast, li lian hua, although wise and cunning, is someone who is humble, someone who lived a modest and impoverished life. he is someone who was tortured by the sins he judged to be “his”, but he is also the kindest man alive. you can feel the regret and weariness reeking off him in spades, that sort of wise but tired aura of a man that lived a thousand lives. i cannot put into words how much the contrast between the two people made me really upset, in the way it’s so melachonic how li cheng yi became li lian hua, and thus wasted away any ounce of talent or potential he had. it was sad in the way you see a bright star fall, a “once-had”, or “could have been”.
okay im going back to my math lecture maybe ill finish this later

I'd like to remind the MDZS fandom that women are, in fact, not tools to make men happy or to take responsibility for their pain or insecurities. I'm really fricking done with the part of the fandom that goes to great lengths to turn every single one of the already very few women into villains because how DARE they not take responsibility for the pain/insecurity of [insert a male character here]. Latest example are Jiang Cheng stans crying over how much Yanli didn't pay attention to his emotions. Y'all go to very very VERY great lengths to defend JC who actually has some serious issues and made some very bad mistakes but you blame his sister - who already died for a man anyway - for his problems. And this isn't the only example. I've seen people pointing out how horrible the mother of Jiang Cheng and Yanli was and her being chosen as worst character over, literally, every single one of the male villains over the show who have done far, far, far worse. And the list only goes on from here...
This is also the same part of the fandom that talks badly about Legend of Fei because how dare their male, gay fave be on a FEMINIST show with a WOMAN. Beyond their understanding that LoF is a very beautiful feminist piece of work with a main, yes heterosexual (to most of our interpretations bisexual, we have proof), couple that literally is so beautifully written and executed. The show cleanses your soul if you had trouble accepting the treatment of women on The Untamed. And those parts of the MDZS fandom also has convinced a large part of the rest of the fandom that LoF is a bad show, which - let me tell you - is not the case. On the contrary, as it is lighter than The Untamed, it has happier stories and happier characters - also female characters who kick ass and smile and laugh and kick some more ass and cuddle with snakes and are allowed to get angry. They're not treated as tools, they're whole-ass characters who also speak more than 5 lines per ep. The plot is not as complex as the one of The Untamed but still intriguing enough to watch. The editing could be better but the CGI definitely outlasts The Untamed. Give this show a chance, don't judge a show without watching it.
[Edit: Legend of Fei also has a sibling-like relationship between 3 of its characters (A'Yan, A'Sheng and A'Fei) of which two are bio sibs and Fei is their cousin. Their relationship is golden. They get on each other's nerves all the time, but have each other's back in serious moments. At the end of the show, the two who bicker the most (Fei and Sheng) will actually protect their home together, most likely until they die. It's happy endings all around. And A'Sheng (who is a bit of a Jiang Cheng) works out his envy and starts seeing Fei as a capable soldier instead of his competitor. He GETS OVER THE FACT that she's more skillful than him and instead focuses on his own capabilities (becoming the Sect Leader). Watch Fei for awesome female chars, for a great beautiful leading ship and for non-toxic masculinity.]
Don't let misogyny get to you. Be critical of the posts you find on here, be critical of your own thought process, be critical of what shows are presenting to you. No one is telling you to stop enjoying a show or character you like, but be critical enough to see its possible problems and don't try to go to lengths to defend something just because you want to excuse your joy for it - you can enjoy it nevertheless, even with its problems but acknowledge them and do not try to drag down women just to point out how great your fave male character is. Inherent misogyny is still a thing and you should all be aware that your thought process may be filled with it, too.
